2019 Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkFrom a not widely known vineyard, Montefico sits half way between Ovello and Montestefano and it is often compared to the latter because of their similar soil (high calcium) and their close proximity. Its warm - full south - exposure is mitigated by the cooler northern wind that occasionally funnels into the narrow valley between the villages of Barbaresco and Neive. First released in 1970, it produces classic Barbaresco wines that could be seen as austere when young but with incredible complexity behind the tannins.
Other Reviews...
Alpine herb, pressed rose, new leather and black tea aromas lead the nose on the superb Montefico 2019 Riserva. Showing the impeccable class and intensity this cru is celebrated for, it’s youthfully austere but also incredibly savory. The firmly structured palate delivers ripe red cherry, raspberry compote, licorice, almond liqueur and saline mineral notes accompanied by a firm backbone of tightly-woven, close-grained tannins. Bright acidity gives it great aging potential.

Kerin O'KeefeThe 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is one of the most searingly tannic wines in the range. Readers will have to be patient with the 2019, as it is going to need time. As always, Montefico is a Barbaresco built on linear intensity more than size. In 2019, the qualities are quite accented. Time in the glass opens the bouquet nicely, but the 2019 remains quite closed. Drink: 2026-2044.

Antonio Galloni - VinousDark ruby red, the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico reveals expressive notes of black raspberry, mossy earth, black truffle, leather, and violets. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate with ripe tannins, salty earth, mouthwatering acidity, and a rich feel. It’s more powerful and assertive in its structure, with building tannins and a rich feel to its texture. It’s a more robust style but has a lot to offer over the coming 15 years. Drink: 2024-2039.

Audrey Frick - JebDunnuck.comEach sniff open another door to this fragrant wine. At first aromas of sour red berries pop out of the glass, followed by a bouquet of rose, then whole cloves and long pepper corns. Polished with cherry jam and wild herbs at its core as the tannins direct the attention to the earthy and mineral driven finish. Drink 2026 onward.

Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Cask Strength Rye Whiskey (750ml)UNITED STATES$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 58.2%Sourced from undisclosed distilleries in California and Indiana, Redwood Empire's limited edition 95% rye has 4% malted barley in the mix as well as a dash of wheat. Aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of four years and up to 6 years on the Northern California coast, the result is a bold, decadent rye with the richness of American oak set against delicate peel freshness and wood spices; the flavours completely envelop the tongue with an impressive wave of orange oils, the character of the grain upping the texture while adding a finishing hint of peppermint. Easily approached at high strength, this gorgeous rye also offers enough sweetness for Bourbon lovers. Give it time in the glass to show its best. Non-chill filtered.
Other reviews... [Batch 001] There’s a savory, herbaceous quality to the nose, calling to mind tea leaves, dried herbs, and a sprig of mint. Sweeter notes, like Andes chocolates, vanilla frosting, and yellow cake soon join the mix, creating a lovely balance between honeyed and herb-driven notes. The palate takes that sweetness and spice even further—there’s delicious heat on the tip of the tongue, giving way to raspberry-filled chocolate squares, black forest cake, and ripe red fruit. The finish amps up the dark chocolate, with a kiss of berry fruit at the end. 58.2% Alc./Vol. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

JamesSuckling.comThe vines are east facing and close to the lake, with less afternoon sun (which means it isn't exposed to the extended heat of the afternoon). "There is clay down there which gives the tannins more mobility and animation," says Nick Mills.
The 2020 Emma's Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with dehydrated cranberry, cherry blossom, graphite and dried star anise. The nose is exotic and restrained at once. This is the entree to the palate which is defined absolutely by the tannins that feel very much like they plume in the wine, like a drop of blood in water. These are wines to feel as much as they are to taste, and this is what helps them stand alone in this place. It’s superb, with unbroken form through the long finish—no strays, no rough edges, no breaks. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2035.

The much more restrained nose is strikingly spicy and offers an extensive range of floral elements on the red and dark berry fruit aromas that are cut with Asian-style tea wisps. The broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors are ultra-refined yet exceptionally powerful and almost painfully intense while offer stunningly good length on the graceful and classy finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This gorgeous but imposingly structured effort indisputably qualifies as a 'wow' wine and is one of the wines of the vintage. Drink through 2041+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMugnier's 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is just being released, but readers should take its eight years of cellaring at the domaine as a statement of intent rather than a sign to start pulling corks on reception, as the wine is still very far from maturity. Unwinding in the glass with scents of dark berries, orange rind, exotic spices and a deft framing of new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a hugely concentrated core of fruit that reflects the year's low yields, lively acids and supple but abundant structuring tannins, it concludes with a long, palate-staining finish. Drink 2028-2065.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The latest to be released is the 2016 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru. I vividly recall tasting this with Mugnier in the barrel cellar after the dramatic frost-afflicted season. To refresh your minds, allow me to reproduce the relevant paragraph from that year’s in-barrel report. Mugnier explained: “There were three barrels of young vines, pruned as Cordon de Royat, which suffered limited damage from frost, and three barrels of older vines, pruned as Guyot, that were very badly hit. The former, regardless of the age of the vines, was tasting much denser and had a greater length than the latter. The final blend of Musigny includes all three barrels of the young vines plus one of the old ones, in order to bring a touch of freshness. The two remaining barrels were blended with the Chambolle Premier Cru Les Plantes and the few grapes from Combe d’Orveau to form the Chambolle-Musigny Trente-Deux, so called after the number of vintages that I have made.”
I have re-tasted the 2016 once in bottle, blind at the Burgfest tasting, where it flirted with perfection. Nothing has changed since then. Mugnier poured the wine in November 2023 after tasting his 2022s (bottles have not been labeled, hence the photograph of the cork). The nose is stunning. There’s incredible purity and intensity, fabulous delineation and a sense of exuberance as it doles out red berry fruit, fresh black truffle shavings and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied, with svelte tannins, poised and precise, gently building toward a seamless finish. It represents a heavenly evocation of one of the world's greatest vineyards. Drink 2024-2060.

Neal Martin - VinousFine mid purple in colour. A very appealing fresh deep red fruit on the nose, quite restrained. Then a bombshell explosion of rich ripe sweet fruit, with just enough acidity at the back. It grows and develops very well, not the most blockbuster of Musignys but finely balanced. This has come on tremendously since tasted in barrel. Indeed only 4 barrels are being bottled as Musigny, with 2 declassified after the frost.

Belle Meade Classic Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)UNITED STATES$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 45.2%The suitably labelled pre-Prohibition brand, 'Belle Meade' is nowadays bottled by Nelson’s Green Brier out of Nashville Tennessee. The original Green Brier distillery was shut down during Prohibition, but Nelson’s great-great-great-grandsons revived the brand in 2013. While the company does distill at their Nashville location, the Belle Meade brand uses sourced whiskies from Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Hence, it's described as “...a proprietary blend of differing mash bills and yeast strains'' and “is a high rye blend of barrels averaging in age from 6-8 years.” It's variously categorised as a Bourbon, or a Tennessee, depending on your source. A common feature of the Belle Meade whiskeys is that despite their mashbills, rye doesn't dominate. Compared to the 'Reserve', the grain is slightly more obvious in this bottling yet remains low key, right up to the finish. Regardless, if you enjoy elegant, understated whiskeys in the style of Buffalo Trace but are wanting a Bourbon with a little more kick and bite, put Belle Meade's Classic near the top of your list.

The lower proof Stroh weighs in at a hefty 60% alc/vol and is distilled from herbs and fruit, as opposed to sugar cane so it will come as something of a novelty for the rum connoisseur. It is perhaps more indispensable in the kitchen than the bar, particularly when it comes to the creation of Austrian sweets, although it has its place in fruit bowls and hot drinks such as warming Jagertee, Punch and Grog.

Rabbit Tale Dareringer Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$144. 99Bottle$1739.88 DozenABV: 46.5%Made from a mash bill of 68% corn, 18% wheat and 14% malted barley, this Straight Bourbon takes a leaf out of the Scotch Whisky playbook with a finishing in PX (sweet) sherry casks from Spain’s artisanal Casknolia Cooperage. Initial aging takes place in alligator char level barrels (the heaviest char of them all). Winner of back-to-back Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, plus another Gold at the World Whiskies Awards. 46.5% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Dareringer is a straight bourbon that is aged in new toasted and charred oak barrels and then finished in Casknolia Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. Batches are relatively small at no more than 15 barrels, however batch numbers are not provided on each bottle. While PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons can be over-the-top, Rabbit Hole manages to deliver a well-balanced experience that’s quite delicious. Dareringer is full of sweet fruit notes, but manages to hold to its bourbon base with flavors of caramel and oak weaving in and out. Moreover, it’s surprisingly full-flavored for the proof which will appeal to a wide audience as it doesn’t taste high proof, but offers a rich character. If you’re a fan of PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons, Dareringer is definitely worth checking out. - breakingbourbon.com

A very good shiraz, with lower elevation sourcing seeming to suit this variety in a hot climate. Paradoxical, perhaps, yet we may as well drink a grape better suited to temperate climes, draped in Australiana, when planted in hot ones. Clove, mace, allspice, blue fruits, charcuterie, aniseed and scape of beautifully extracted tannins, oak and grape, curtailing the fruit sweetness. Simple mercy! Gritty and llicorella-pungent of feel. The tannins and the oak, unlike with grenache, make this wine. Drink by 2032.

Medium-full colour. Closed-in but rich, concentrated nose. Good grip here. Medium-full body. Ripe, balanced, fresh and very profound and elegant. Exceptionally fine, complex fruit. Good as his Clos de Bèze is, this is, as always, just that bit superior. A great wine.

Clive Coates MW - Decanter (Feb 2018)Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. Drink from 2030+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Mar 2023)Glowing vermilion. Rousseau colours are never the deepest but this shade indicates that the wine is still in its infancy. There is an element of reduction on the nose, but all the power is there with an impressive density of deep dark cherry fruit. There is brilliant intensity on the palate too in the classical, polished Rousseau style. Still an infant but it is now possible to see how the wine will unfurl over the next few decades. It is not a complete sin to start drinking this wine, but you will be missing out on a valuable potential upside.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, spices, espresso roast, loamy soil and orange oil, the 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. Rich and penetrating, it's the most reserved wine in the cellar at this youthful stage.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru bides its time in the glass. Dark berry fruit, oyster shell and blackcurrant pastilles mix with subtle autumn leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, cohesive but not deep or concentrated. Shows fine acidity and is nicely poised, though it's unapologetically conservative on the finish. Is this hiding something up its sleeve? At the moment, it is shown up by the Clos Sant-Jacques. Drink 2025-2042.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)This wine figures prominently on my list for 'best of the vintage', edged out only slightly by its stablemate Clos de Bèze. It is a wine of great intensity, with pronounced, forward, brambly blackberry fruit, notes of lavender, smoke, a hint of wood spice, and compelling savoury complexity. The texture is firmly tannic and dense but not imposing. There is no lack of fresh acidity, yet everything is in balance, and the overall impression is one of seamless beauty. Drink 2027-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)Intricately layered aromas of spice, earth, dark berries, underbrush, dried floral hints and leather are trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and punch, particularly on the intensely mineral-inflected, youthfully austere, serious and amazingly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. In particular, the complexity is already remarkable, and this beautifully balanced effort should amply repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A fine glowing purple, with just the lightest touch of reduction. Then waves of flavour on the palate, extra depth in the middle, but still more discreet than usual. This will have the grace of Chambertin but not quite the depth of the greatest years. Well-made and persistent. Drink from 2030-2040.

2021 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$4199. 00Bottle$50388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The most dramatic wine in the cellar is the 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fleshy, enveloping wine that bursts with aromas of sweet cherries, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and smoked duck. Deep and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is so much more expressive on the nose compared to the Chambertin (which is a cooler terroir due to the clay, its location next to the combe and adjacent to the frost). Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. Drink 2025-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. It is spicier and more open, the aromas more voluptuous, with ripe red and black fruit, plenty of earthy, mineral depth of flavour and complexity, and a texture on the palate that is plumper, riper and more ‘exhibitioniste’, according to Cyrielle Rousseau. Drink 2030-2060.
99 points
Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Jan 2022)A slightly more deeply colored hue is in keeping with the somewhat riper, and certainly spicier, aromas of both red and dark currant, exotic tea and more prominent floral nuances, all of which is also trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium weight plus flavors are almost as powerful as those of the Chambertin if not quite so mineral-driven while displaying equally superb length and complexity on the balanced, graceful and compact finale. While qualitatively quite similar to the Chambertin, as is typically the case, these offer two very different expressions. Drink through 2038+.
94-96 points
Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)A delicious vibrant crimson purple with a clean, reduction free, nose. Plenty of energy here. This is more linear and less nuanced than the Chambertin, with a greater concentration of fruit on the palate but less detail. Assured and long, yet ultimately I think the Chambertin shows greater class. Drink from 2029-2038.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.
91-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a bright and youthful nose. Fine delineation with exuberant dark berry fruit, this still needs more bottle age to subsume the oak. Wonderful redcurrant, cranberry notes develop, with orange blossom hints. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins and exquisite balance, yet it clams up toward the finish. Huge potential, but it needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. Drink 2028-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Dec 2022)Domaine Rousseau owns one-third of the clos, with most of it in the sunniest and warmest spot against the wall. This combines impressive depth and structure with the freshness that you always get in the best wines from this renowned premier cru. Aged in 70% new wood, this has the concentration and texture to age impressively in bottle. Drink 2026-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)Here the wood treatment is equally subtle on the restrained nose that displays fresh and cool aromas of red currant, wet stone, tea and forest floor. Like the Ruchottes the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is quite sleek and ultra-intense while flashing plenty of minerality on the strikingly well-detailed finish that displays focused power and superb length. This is an exercise in harmony and grace and while it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, it should age effortlessly for several decades. Drink through 2032+.

Firmer and more compact than the supple, expressive Cazetiers, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notes of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and tensile, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it will require a bit of patience.
91-92 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed nose and is rather floral in style. Traces of blue fruit and pressed iris flower combine succinctly with the red fruit. Again, there is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's cohesive and smooth in texture, nothing weighty. The 2021 might lack density for some, but it is so harmonious and charming that you won't be able to resist. Drink 2025-2040.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)Rousseau's Charmes is the first grand cru tasted in the cellar. The emphasis here is on the purity of fruit and silky expression rather than the lush density of some growers. There is a hint of spice to the ripe, ethereal cherry aromas, but there is no new wood in the maturation here – 'you have to avoid crushing it with new wood', according to Cyrielle. It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.
94 points
Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note. The supple but racy middleweight flavors aren't quite as concentrated but they're finer with retaining good power on the sour cherry-inflected finale that delivers excellent length. Lovely and a wine that should also repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2033+.

2019 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di MontalcinoTuscany, ITALY$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkPoggio di Sotto Brunello is celebrated as the quintessential expression of Montalcino’s famed terroir. Crafted with meticulous care and deep respect for tradition, Poggio di Sotto capture the pure, elegant character of Sangiovese at its finest. Through extended aging in Slavonian oak, Poggio di Sotto achieves a rare harmony of complexity, structure, and finesse that embodies the very soul of Brunello.

Bright, full red. Nuanced, extremely deep and complex nose offers raspberry, redcurrant, superripe red cherry, tobacco, sandalwood, warm stones, vanilla and a violet nuance. Suave, juicy and multilayered, with harmonious acidity nicely framing the wine’s concentrated red plum, tobacco and mocha flavors. This subtle but very concentrated Brunello finishes delicately savoury and mineral, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume of sweet spices and perfume. A huge success for an estate that has known many over the years, this may well be the wine of the vintage. Drinking window: 2028-2045.

Ian D'Agata - TerroirSenseAlthough this wine was very shy initially, the Poggio di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino eventually hits all the high notes of Sangiovese. This is a wine of enormous inner tension, showing a punchy, lifted personality with aromas of cherry skin and blackberry. You get brandied cherry, strawberry glazed pie with the gelatin, underbrush, blue flower, forget-me-nots, balsam herb, mint and licorice. A few hours later, the wine had developed into a classic beauty with slender lines, firm structure and a sparkle of brilliant acidity. The oak is integrated to the point of invisibility, the tannins are elegant and fine and the acidity is that proverbial cherry on top. Ultimately, I liked this village bottling more than the 2018 Riserva. Drink 2030-2055.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)Dusty roses, worn leather, dried strawberries and arid earth form a classic bouquet as the dynamic 2019 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is feminine yet deep and textural, with ripe plums and black cherries motivated by brisk acidity. Violet inner florals and licorice hints form toward the close. The 2019 leaves a salty mineral staining to mingle with fine-grained tannins and spice, as it finishes with incredible length, yet still so fresh. This is incredibly youthful and inward today, but the potential is off the charts. I expect the 2019 to put on some weight and blossom over the next five to ten years. Glorious. Drink 2027-2042.

Eric Guido - VinousSweet cherry and flower aromas with some orange peel and lilac character. Medium-bodied with pretty depth and focus. Ripe, fine tannins and an attractive finish. James SucklingDespite heavy rain, there was very little disease in 2019 and the hot summer brought the grapes to full ripeness. The subdued cherry aromas reflect the wine's youth, though they became more expressive with aeration. The palate is rich but sleek in texture, with polished tannins and fine acidic lift. The texture is grainy without being tough, and there's so much energy and grip here that the wine clearly has great ageing potential. Very long, with a lightly peppery finish. A majestic end to the decade. Drink 2026-2040.

Stephen Brook - DecanterThe 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a jeweled ruby color and has more concentration than the 2018, but it's going to need time to reach its full potential of complexity. Rich notes of kirsch, licorice, sapid herbs, and dark stones are followed by a medium to full-bodied red that's deep and rich through the palate, with ripe and noble tannins, a seamless feel, and a long-lasting finish. A profound wine and one of the best of the vintage, give it some time while drinking the 2018s and 2020s.

Containing 20% whole bunches, the 2022 Vosne-Romanée Village has a tightly wound and "correct" bouquet. It lets the Morey-Saint-Denis Village take the limelight at the moment, red and black fruit combined, a little more sous-bois than expected. The 2022 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has an open and expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor scents, with a hint of morels in the background. The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised in 50% new oak with 15% whole bunches. Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyHere too there is enough wood to notice framing the markedly floral-suffused nose with its notes of lavender, rose petal, violet and acacia blossom that add breadth to the elegant and cool red berry scents. The super-sleek and moderately dense flavors retain fine delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and persistent finale where a touch of wood slowly reemerges. Drink through 2034+.

2022 Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1099. 00Bottle$13188.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot produce exceptional Burgundy, yet are still firmly under the radar for many collectors. Given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the expert winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, Coquard Loison-Fleurot won't remain hidden for long.
For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties. While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Coquard Loison-Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is the most reticent on the nose, painfully shy despite coaxing from its shell. Touches of cold stone and a light estuarine tang. The medium-bodied palate has quite fine tannins, very pure and tensile, sporting dark cherries mixed with Indian spices and pain d'epices. There’s fine length, though the Clos de la Roche has a notch more flair. Drink 2029-2060.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousA bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.
95-97 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA completely different nose offers up much spicier aromas of red currant, exotic tea and a similar hint of violet. There is excellent vibrancy to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that don't have the power of the Clos de la Roche but do offer slightly better depth and precision on the lingering finale that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the gorgeously well-balanced finale. This is a stunner of a CSD. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak with 20% whole bunches, has an entrancing, beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, becoming ever more floral in the glass: rose bush and iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with orange sorbet and allspice, building confidence towards its ripe and quite spicy finish. With fine persistence on the aftertaste, this represents a very impressive Clos de la Roche. Drink 2029-2060.
95-97 points
Neal Martin - VinousA glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyDiscreet but not imperceptible wood sets off distinctly earthy aromas of plum, red currant, spice and a whisper of violet. There is both good volume and a lovely sense of purity to the caressing yet quite powerful middleweight plus flavors that exude evident minerality on the hugely long, balanced and mildly austere finale. This is terrific and highly recommended. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more generous and expressive bouquet than the Clos de Vougeot: black cherries and wild strawberries, just a bit of reduction to wade through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid, quite structured entry. Grippy in the mouth, a solid Mazoyères-like Charmes with a dash of peppercorns on the finish. Solid and a bit unyielding at the moment; this is one to cellar for several years before broaching. Drink 2030-2058.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. This is going to be a beautiful bottle in due course, with a lovely, fine, summer pudding aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038.
94-97 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis is also aromatically quite pretty and fresh with its lightly spiced combination of red berries, floral and earth-scented nose. Here too there is a relatively sleek and refined mouthfeel to the slightly more concentrated and more mineral-inflected flavors that possess good detail on the youthfully austere, firm and nicely balanced finale that possesses evident power. This Chambolle-Musigny is sourced from the lieu-dit of Les Gamaires.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 30% new oak and 25% whole bunches, seems to lack cohesion on the nose at the moment, missing some presence. The palate is medium-bodied with more depth and fruit intensity. It is not a complex Chambolle and a bit austere on the finish, but the whole bunches lend a little grip and spice on the finish. It should give several years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2026-2034.
86-88 points
Neal Martin - VinousThere was enough to make two cuves which will be blended together. A fine and even mid purple, with a gently charm to the nose, this is not too forceful though it certainly has plenty of energy on the palate. The barrel adds grip to the persistent finish. Drink from 2027-2033.
90-92 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyHere the expressive nose is both more elegant and more floral-inflected on the spicy red cherry and plum scents. There is equally good vibrancy and better detail on the finer medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere finale. This could use better depth so a few years of cellar time should prove helpful. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound - Johnnie Walker Red Label Blended Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Kilmarnock, SCOTLAND$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 40%
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

2022 Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling AusleseNahe, GERMANY$265. 00Bottle$3180.00 DozenABV: 7.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
What a nose of floral honey and dried flowers this fabulous Auslese has. In spite of the abundant richness what makes this stand out is the invigorating mineral freshness. And the further back the wine rolls over your palate the more amazing it becomes. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. It's fluid, smooth, serene, bright and laden with citrus and grapefruit spice on the long finish. Drink 2028-2050.

This starts very quietly and gently with a wafting cloud of floral aromas, but then your gaze is pulled into the base of this Gothic cathedral window, pulling you ever further upward until you are staring at the heavens. Supernatural energy and vitality, the wet stone character cascading over your palate at the super-long finish. Doesn’t want to stop! From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comFrom shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage. Drink 2028-2050.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

Isle of Jura Red Wine Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Isle of Jura, SCOTLAND$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Since the 2018 relaunch of the core Jura single malts, their “Signature Series” has been gradually expanding. Other reviews... Jura these days appears to be making bold statements. And often they include broad brush strokes on a selected target: here is the fruit. There is definitely an unfortunate niggle to the finish. But that is more than compensated by the beguiling nose and the vivid delivery and follow-through.
