Dense midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated blackcurrant and liquorice aromas mix with earth, black olive, vanillin cedar, hints of leather and mint. Rich and powerful, a concentrate of blackcurrant and liquorice fruit floods the full bodied palate. Earthy vanillin cedar, tobacco, mint, black olive and subtle leather characters lurk in the background. A sturdy tannin structure lends firmness to what is otherwise an opulent feel. Long robust conclusion.

This takes deep-seated blackcurrant and mint flavours and injects them with long rakes of tannin. It feels profound from the first sip and it continues this impression all the way through to its super-long finish. Talk about impressive. The purity of the fruit, the integration of the (smoky) oak, the swagger of it; the confidence. You don't just drink this wine, you follow it. This is pretty much as good as it gets. Drink by 2049

Campbell Mattinson - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

From vineyards on the famous red terra rossa soil in central Coonawarra, planted in 1985. After destemming, the grapes are pressed directly to barrel. The wine spends two years maturing in French oak (mostly), half of which is new. Only 220 dozen made. This is the team’s prestige release and made from barrel selection. An opaque maroon colour, there is serious power and intensity here. Notes of chocolate, tobacco leaf, new leather, warm earth, blackberries, soy and aniseed. Supple texture, very fine tannins, an exemplary structure. The palate sees some delicious blueberries emerge. The wine is nicely balanced with great length and is a twenty year proposition – really impressive. Drink 2023-2043.

First there was their delicious Fig Gin, then a Fig Aperitif. Now the team are offering a Fig Amaro. The figs are poached gently to extract the sweet fig aroma and earthiness of the fruit. 21% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Fig leaf and bright orange on the nose lead to jammy confit fig and a touch of gentian on the palate. A moreish, ultra lengthy finish flush with dry spice and seriously surprising bitterness.

    2022 Envinate Migan Tinto
    Tenerife, SPAIN
    $81. 99
    Bottle
    $983.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Migan and Palo Blanco are both very old vine wines from the Valle de la Orotava zone, although they don’t bear the D.O. stamp. The old vines are trained in the Trezendo fashion: braiding new shoots over older ones until the vines begin to resemble old dreadlocks weaving over the landscape. The terrain is flatter than Táganan, more conducive to farming. Migan is two parcels of Listan Negro, both over 100 years old, while Palo Blanco is a single vineyard from the town of Los Realejos planted on black volcanic soils.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Migan feels very fruit-driven, open and expressive. It's the final blend of the wine, but it still wasn't bottled when I tasted it in early November. The wine feels quite harmonious, juicy and round, with moderate acidity. It's tender and young, still too primary. Drink 2025 - 2029.

Racy and a little less perfumed than Taganan Margalagua that was tasted alongside. There is a little more fruit, depth of color and aroma, but it is less effusive. Wild berries, white pepper funk, grilled grapefruit, dried white asparagus and dried mushrooms. A little more volume and fruit on the palate with silky, soft tannins. So delicious! Drink now.

    $56. 99

    $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%

Benje refers to an area high above the cloud cover on the western edge of the Tiede volcano. It’s an area that produces markedly different wines, from the sappy freshness of the coastal zones but still carries the hallmark lightness of all of Envínate’s wines. Benje Tinto is straight Listan Prieto, Benje Blanco is Listan Blanco. Both are grown on a mixture of old ash and red clay at over 1000m above sea level.

    Other Reviews....
The red 2022 Benje is floral, expressive, clean and elegant, reflecting a very good year in the region, with notes of rose petals and talcum powder, a fine texture and very elegant tannins. This has to be the most elegant Benje to date. 28,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.

A translucent pale red. The nose shows pepper, wild strawberries, a pleasant herbal note and a reductive touch reminiscent of roasted pumpkin seeds. The palate is juicy and medium-bodied with subtle concentration and shy tannins. Super pleasant and drinkable. Made from mostly listan prieto and about 10% listan blanco, from vines planted at 900 to 1,200 meters of altitude.

2022 Envinate Parcela Palo Blanco Las Molinas
    Tenerife, SPAIN
    $165. 00

2022 marks the first vintage of this single parcel wine from a centenarian plot of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines that had formerly been included in the Palo Blanco bottling. Fermented and aged in a single neutral oak foudre of 1500 liters.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Palo Blanco Las Molinas is a new white from Los Realejos, a large plot of some 1.2 hectares of vines. In 2021, the grapes from this plot went into the Palo Blanco blend that they bottled in 2022. For the 2022 vintage, they bottled a 1,500-liter oak foudre separately to make this wine, and another 3,500 liters still went to the Palo Blanco blend. This has moderate alcohol, 11.5%, and very low pH and high acidity, unusual parameters for the variety, something that seems to come from the zone. It's fresh, floral and expressive with just a spicy twist. It has a vibrant palate and a long, tasty, almost salty finish. There is a plus of complexity and finesse here. 1,988 bottles and 24 magnums were filled in July 2023. Drink 2024 - 2029.

Lovely red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and blueberry scents drift from the glass accompanied by hints of violet, fresh herbs, delicate earth and subtle pepper notes. Rich and concentrated yet quite light on its feet, the mid weighted palate is awash with dark raspberry, liquorice, dark cherry and more subtle blueberry fruits. Scorched earth and peppered herb accents ensue. Slightly grainy tannins and lively acidity lend structure. Understated in its power, it concludes very long and peppery.

Red plums, spicy incense, and spring flower notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Montviel, a medium-bodied, supple, elegant 2023 offering beautiful ripeness, ultra-fine tannins, and a good spine of acidity. It's very much in the more lively, elegant style of the vintage while still bringing plenty of ripeness. It should easily be outstanding.

The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin is a total stunner. Dark, rich and sensual, the Vite Talin captures all of the natural richness of the heavily virused, low-yielding clone the Sandrone family propagated in their parcels within Le Coste and Rivasi, both in Barolo. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and kirsch are all dialed up in this explosive, heady Barolo. The 2017 is just next-level wine. Superb. Drink: 2027-2047.

This wine is made with a new clone of Nebbiolo that was identified by the Sandrone family. The 2017 Barolo Vite Talin now occupies the top position in the family portfolio. It represents 30 years of work by Luciano Sandrone, who started his career as cellar master at Marchesi di Barolo. I am told that Nebbiolo is recognized by seven DNA indicators, and Talin (the clone is named after the old farmer who found the first vine) has all seven. Today, the Sandrone family has propagated the clone and is cleaning it from viruses to see how it behaves in the future. Alessia Sandrone is in charge of this process. They notice that berry size is half that of normal Nebbiolo, and the wine is consequently more concentrated and dense. This hot vintage delivers lots of extra power and fruit weight with pressed blackberry, earth, tobacco, clay, autumnal leaf, iodine and candied orange. Drink: 2025-2055.

The 2013 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis, the Sandrone library release of the 2013 is a powerhouse. A rush of black cherry, mocha, new leather, licorice, cloves and tobacco race across the palate. The Aleste is a bit more forward than Le Vigne, but it, too, is aging pretty slowly. The 2013 can be enjoyed now with a good decant, but I would cellar it for another year or two. Aromatics in the empty glass are nothing less than thrilling. Drink: 2024-2038.

Aromas of black berries, cherries, dried leaves, and bark follow through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins and a savory finish. Holding on well in a classic, tannic nature. Held in the cellar of the winery for 10 years. Drink or hold.

Past vintages of this wine report the name of the MGA (Cannubi Boschi), but from this point on, the wine is called Aleste. This is a late-release project with bottles that are held back in a brick-lined room for an additional 10 years of bottle age. The Luciano Sandrone 2013 Barolo Aleste Sibi et Paucis is a true classic. The wine still shows hints of its primary fruit, but it has otherwise moved into an exciting phase of its evolution. There is dried spice, campfire ash, licorice and truffle essence. The flavors trigger your mouth to salivate, and the tannins feel like silk. Drink: 2024-2045.

The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. Very aromatic with hibiscus, crab apple, orange blossom, and ripe strawberry on the nose. Full-bodied, very layered and powerful, yet it remains very fine textured with an intense finish. The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral. The 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese LGK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeously refined and sumptuous nose of almond paste, pineapple, honeyed yellow peach, tangerine, candied orange zest, fresh apricot, passion fruit, thyme, and smoke. The wine proves magnificently playful on the rich yet refined palate. There is great sweetness and intensity, but also airy and elegant elements which come into play. The energy and finesse in the magnificently long finish are remarkable. What a stunning dessert wine!

The 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel was designated thus because it was not found typical enough for a Beerenauslese, despite reaching sufficient must weight, it was made with 55-60% of botrytis. Mirabelle jelly and compote shine on the nose, slightly lifted, aromatic, ripe and sweet. The palate brings this to the fore, presenting a lovely, concentrated, vividly fruity, bright core of candied Mirabelle, accompanied by gilded, candied citrus, mouth-watering and tempered, yet so intense. Very long, beautifully restrained and pure. (Luscious). Drink: 2025-2050.

Still very youthful on the nose, this is crammed with ripe peach, plus more delicate notes of pineapple and mangosteen. The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese opens with a notion of baked peach, especially baked peach skin, aromatic, slightly caramelized with concentrated fruit. Peach compote sweeps onto the palate, ripe and still with bite, just as cooked peach flesh appears, expressive and sweet but not overdone. This entire flight is a lesson in restraint. The long finish and aftertaste are tempered with citrus, corralling that expressive peach. Lovely, restrained, elegant. (Sweet). Drink: 2025-2050.

Here’s a very classic Mosel Spatlese with exactly the combination of richness, elegance and delicacy that makes this category unique. Such delicate white peach and sliced pear, rose and honeysuckle aromas. Very long finish that is as succulent as it is refined. You just want to linger there for as long as you can. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese #11 just shyly speaks of white peach compote on the nose, nothing more. The palate is clear-cut. It flashes a steely slate tone before mollifying it with riper fruit and aromatic citrus, so you are undoubtedly aware of its natural colors. This is stone and poise, depth and salty slate, adorning its essential, stony nature with white peach, ripe, expressive tangerine and a fillip of zesty spice on the finish. Light, restrained and elegant. (Medium). Drink: 2025-2050.

Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is rather closed. Distant fruit appears as though behind glass where you can see but not touch. The palate is a juicy, rounded but tingling picture of tangerine. Aromatic, deliciously tart but wonderfully ripe, with that scented, balancing, zesty tang of tangerine peel. The 2022 shows poised balance, sweetness, extended, aromatic length and real elegance. (Medium). Drink: 2025-2050.

Espolon Anejo 100% Agave Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Launched in 2010 with the Anejo added in 2015, the Espolon tequilas have become stock standard in bars around the country. While they may not be universally considered great standalone tequilas, they are deemed solid values and perfectly good mixers. Master Distiller, Cirilo Oropeza makes Espolon in a small batch process from ‘hand-selected’ 100% Blue Weber agaves cooked for 18 to 20 hours prior to fermentation. Following a slow distillation, the Anejo is aged for at least a year in unused white oak barrels then finished in x-Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels for 2-3 months - which makes sense, as both ventures are owned by Campari. Although some find the Bourbon influence too much, you'll still find agave-derived notes of grilled pineapple and roasted banana, enriched by butterscotch, vanilla, cinnamon and gingery warmth. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is rich without being aggressive, with big caramel and vanilla notes that hit the nose right at the start. The body engages right away, pushing that silky sweetness into some woody notes with a slight, agave-driven, vegetal edge. The finish is long and complex, hitting some racy red pepper notes as it begins, then punching up butterscotch and more vanilla syrup before a slow fade that brings the agave back to the forefront. None of this is particularly surprising, but it’s all on point and just about perfect for an anejo, proving again that, pound for pound, Espolon is one of the best bargains in the tequila business. - drinkhacker.com

...Nose is certainly aggressive. Faint agave, some butterscotch, and unusually aggressive baking spices. There’s the Turkey… The palate is…fine. It’s bold and flavorful, and I don’t tast many of any additives, but I’m missing that rich cooked agave taste and creamy mouthfeel a traditionally well-made tequila has. Finish is medium. More spice. Not enough cooked agave. This is a mixer at heart, not a sipper. It makes a killer Paloma, and is fine as a sessionable sipper with chips and salsa waiting for mediocre tex-mex food... Salud! - distiller.com

Schrader Cellars has received thirty-seven perfect 100-point scores from top wine reviewers – more than any other winery in the Napa Valley.

The most coveted bottling in the Schrader portfolio, Old Sparky Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a section of the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard that is planted on rich soils containing ancient marine sediment and an alluvial fan that provides excellent mineral deposits. It is a blend of only the best barrels from the vintage. Aged in 100% new Darnajou and Taransaud French oak barrels.

    Other Reviews....
A selection put together by winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Old Sparky is one of the true gems in the vintage, as well as a perfect wine. Thrilling black fruits, crème de cassis, tobacco, tapenade, and iron notes all emerge from the glass, and it's full-bodied and has a similar purity to the CCS release, with ultra-fine tannins and one hell of an incredible finish. Napa Valley Cabernet, or red wine for that matter, doesn't get any better. Give bottles 2-4 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades or more.

A best-barrel selection made by Thomas Rivers Brown and bottled in magnums, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is truly great stuff. Full-bodied, rich, velvety and all-enveloping, it delivers near-endless waves of black cherries, red raspberries and complex but gentle spice notes. Long and mouthwatering on the finish, it seamlessly eliminates any gap between power and elegance, leaving scant possible reaction except Wow!

Firm, powerful and impressive. There's been a resurgence in varietal cabernet franc wines of late, and this is an excellent example of why. Blackcurrant, cocoa and eucalyptus flavours feel both rock solid and bold in the mouth (in a positive way), leading to a dry, resounding finish. You have to enjoy tannin to go for this because there's plenty of it here, but in that context, it's very good. Drink by 2033.

The Brand family has a history that dates back to 1852, stretching over six generations. Their winemaking journey began when Eric Brand married Nancy Redman and purchased a vineyard block from the Redman family. The Brands Laira winery was established in 1965 with the first commercial release in 1966. In 1994 Brand’s Liara was sold but the family retained ownership of key vineyards from which they produced premium fruit to sell to other wineries.  In recent years fourth generation vigneron Sam Brand took the next step establishing Brand & Sons with initial releases receiving high critical acclaim.

Sourced from a selection of vineyards across Coonawarra, this label take’s it name from Eric Brand’s early career as a baker in the Riverland which he gave up to depart for a new life in Coonawarra. Maturation took place in a mix of new (25%) and second use French and American barrels.

Awarded an MW of wine in 2020, winemaker Duane Coates is by his own admission, a 'heart over head' winemaker. Inclined to make wine from almost any interesting parcel of fruit made available to him, he tends to make accountants wince. For Duane, making great wine is not about business decisions; it’s about curiosity, passion, and a little bit of folly. His wines marry Australia’s richness of fruit with the savouriness and complexity of the old world.

An older release of the world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers everywhere. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

The Black Douglas is a tribute drink to the legendary warrior, Sir James Douglas. He died in battle against overwhelming Spanish forces, swinging his claymore and clutching a silver casket containing the heart of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. Aged and blended in Scotland, Black Douglas has won over many a dedicated Scotch drinker, with its simple, robust, full bodied character - not to mention its price. 37.5% alc./vol.

Viognier by Farr is a blend of two vineyards. The first is the original house block planted in 1994, which has friable red soil over limestone leading to sandstone - similar soils to the Sangreal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by Farr. The second vineyard is a younger planting of unknown clones in red ironstone soil. The Viognier is a difficult variety to manage, with the tendency to grow horizontally rather than vertically, being very thirsty and having a tendency to become sunburnt easily. This prompted winemaker Nick Farr to pick the fruit earlier in order to retain natural acidity while maintaining varietal character, creating a more delicate and refined wine.
Viognier is foot-stomped and left for two or more hours on its skins, to extract phenolics, flavour and texture. The fruit is then pressed, cooled and put straight into barrel with all solids for a natural fermentation. Malolactic conversion is encouraged with gentle stirring during the end of autumn. The wine is then racked, fined, filtered and bottled 11 months after harvest.

Teremana Small Batch Blanco Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Since launching in 2020, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Teremana Tequilas have gradually been rolled out globally. A shipment has just landed in Australia. Many tequila fans are keen to try the range, especially since the Reposado was crowned Tequila of the Year at the USA Spirits Ratings in 2021. The result surprised sceptics who consider celebrity-affiliated brands lacking quality or substance. It also means you won't be pouring these down the dwayne!

Scoring 93 points, winning the title was no mean feat given that many other tequilas were in the running and the competition is hosted by a tough set of judges. Teremana Blanco wasn’t too far behind, picking up a bronze.

Says Dwayne Johnson, “The tequila that we make is of the Earth. Sustainability is something that is important to us at Teremana”. In fact, Johnson and the team focus on sustainability and people more than anything else. Partners, the Lopez Family, are third-generation agave growers and second-generation distillers in the highlands of Jalisco and will continue to oversee production. The collaboration has served free meals to over 35,000 frontline workers, supported the hospitality industry with their Guac on the Rock campaign, as well as contributed to numerous charities such as World Central Kitchen, Turning Tables, and Another Round Another Rally, totaling over one million dollars in donations. Teremana takes 100% of the agave fibers and turns them into natural compost used as an organic fertilizer for the agave fields. The distillery also uses a state-of-the-art water filtration system that cleans the water left over from production.

Reports have it that sales in early 2023 exceeded one million 9-litre cases annually. An Instagram post by Johnson stated that “Teremana Tequila has set new records in the spirits industry, and has become the BIGGEST LAUNCH OF ANY SPIRIT EVER”. Like them or not, that's an extraordinary achievement.

As for the tequila, it's a clear value buy in its category. At 40% the Blanco offers surprising intensity and convincing agave character on both the nose and palate. The mouthfeel also impresses, being nicely rounded and full with a briney, beeswax-like note competing with white pepper and sappy agave, trailing off minerally and dry with suggestions of grassy, green tropical fruits adding zest to the finish. A quality starting point for your next Margarita.

Other reviews... Owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, this crystalline tequila resounds with zesty bell pepper and poblano aromas. The light, crisp palate entwines lemon peel with gentle almond and marshmallow sweetness, finishing with white-pepper sparks. Mix in margaritas or palomas. 92 points - wineenthusiast.com

...The name means "spirit of the earth"--TERE from the Latin word for "earth" and MANA from the Polynesian word for "spirit." Grapefruit comes through first on the nose, with herbaceous agave, and lemon peel. The palate has an oily mouthfeel, with predominant grassy and mineral notes, along with light vanilla, lemon Pledge, and roasted bell peppers. The finish is clean and short, with Baker's chocolate, agave nectar and more zesty citrus. 85 points - distiller.com

The nose here is immediately a bit plain — vegetal, muddy, and a bit sweaty, though it’s at least short of off-putting. The palate opens up a bit, initially showing notes of white pepper and some lemon. There’s a gentle sweetness rolling through the body, but a funky, heavily earthy note — not really like agave but more like damp dirt — is never far away, invariably rushing back to meet you. The pungent nose is hard to shake throughout, eventually settling into a note more akin to green beans than fresh agave, muddying the entire experience. This is usable as a mixer only. - drinkhacker.com

Teremana Small Batch Reposado Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Tequila of the Year at the USA Spirits Ratings in 2021.

Teremana's Reposado rounds out and softens the spicy vivaciousness of the Blanco without compromising agave character. Vibrant, deep and textural, judicious barrel ageing has added a delectable honeyed glaze to the sappy, green pine and subdued peppercorn notes. There's substance enough to hold up to mixing, but the quality on offer means you can enjoy this as a standalone spirit. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Oddly, no aging information is provided, though we do know the spirit is rested in ex-bourbon barrels. Reposados usually find their aromatics tempered by barrel time, but this expression doesn’t let up on that funky, vegetal nose, though here more of a black pepper note comes through. The palate does show some of the sweetness one expects from a reposado, but not an overwhelming amount. Still, it’s enough to temper the heavy earthiness that the blanco shows, and as it develops in the glass, some butterscotch and lemon elements begin to dominate, giving the finish more of a welcome approachability. - drinkhacker.com

    Other Reviews....
Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season. Drink 2025-2065.

Yohan Castaing - Wine Advocate (Apr 27, 2024)

The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is increasingly a wine of seamlessness. Whereas the various components were once easily discernible, today Carmes is most often a wine of total beauty. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. Drink 2035-2073.

    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 11 to 25 with 60% whole bunch and more Cabernet Franc than usual. Aging was 70% in new barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. This offers plenty of dark berry fruit mixed with cedar and pinecones on the nose, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and the acidity is very well-judged. Just a soupçon of white pepper appears toward the finish. This is a much more succinct Les Carmes than the 2022, but it’s extremely harmonious and characterful. Drink 2028-2048.

This is a fantastic wine and very, very exciting, with purity and brightness to the floral, spicy and blackberry notes. It’s full and deep with agility and weightless. You feel the greatness in this. The winemaker says this is more concentrated and structured than the 2022. Lightly salty. 60% whole-berry fermentation. 50% cabernet franc, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From organically grown grapes.

As to the Grand Vin 2023 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, this beauty checks in as 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot that was fermented with 60% whole cluster, brought up in 70% new barrels, with a good portion in foudre and amphora. It has a deep ruby/purple hue and vibrant aromatics of cassis and black cherries as well as leafy tobacco, spring flowers, woodsmoke, and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, it stays tight and compact on the palate, with a lively spine of acidity, beautiful precision and focus, ripe yet certainly present tannins, and outstanding length. It’s incredibly elegant, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this gain mid-palate density over the course of its élevage. It’s going to be long-lived.

Extremely floral nose; peony, iris, rose, expressive and aromatic with black fruits too, liquorice, dark fruit, cedar, some black chocolate and coffee bitterness on the nose too. Smooth and supple, nicely weighted in the mouth, forward, grippy and bright with a soft chew - really quite polished and pristine. Seamlessly integrated with the acidity balancing the tannins and the ripe fruit with some mineral wet stone undercurrents and slight bitter liquorice and grapefruit skin on the finish. It’s a little serious, but certainly polished with a soft chew of strawberry and raspberry and stoney-edged tannins giving excellent terroir signature. Ripe, fresh, clean, fragrant, sleek and streamlined. It has a lovely style and lots of finesse from winemaker Guillaume Pouthier. Harvest 11-25 September, 60% whole bunch fermentation taking the alcohol down from 14.3% at picking to 13.5%. 3.62pH. Drink 2033 - 2048.

    Georgina Hindle - Decanter

Deep in color, the wine is equally deep, sporting nuances of blackberries, black cherries, flowers, blueberries, tar, herbs, and spices. On the palate, the wine is rich, full-bodied, supple, and deep. There is intensity, purity, length, and vibrancy. The wine is rich, and concentrated, yet, the cool part of the tasting is that the wine is also light on its feet. With all the obvious density, the wine never feels heavy. Although it is mouthcoating, its also elegant, leaving you with layers of crushed stones, herbs, and a wealth of ripe, sweet, dark fruits, with a touch of salty chocolate in the finish. The wine was made using 60% whole bunch clusters, blending 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, 13.5% ABV, pH 3.6. The wine is aging in a combination of 70% new, French oak, 20% foudres and 10% amphora. Picking took place September 11- September 23. Drink from 2025-2050.

Teremana Small Batch Anejo Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

2020 was a significant year for celebrity-affiliated releases and Teremana was one of the biggest of all. For the few who don't know, it's a new tequila brand backed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The launch featured both a Blanco and Reposado with the Anejo following suit. Compared to its siblings, this is more restrained aromatically, the palate drier, spicier and livelier than expected for an Anejo - but no bad thing. Hints of butter-menthol cough lozenges mix with peppery warmth while the finish contributes a light oiliness, ending crisp and dry with a moderate agave character. Not exactly typical, so for those used to sweet, soft styles, Teremana's Reposado may be closer to the mark. Matured in x-whisky barrels. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The newest expression from the brand backed by Dwayne Johnson offers zesty jalapeño and vanilla aromas. Honey and butterscotch coat the palate, enlivened by bracing clove, cayenne and white pepper on the exit. The overall impression suggests a butter cookie rolled in spices. 93 points  - wineenthusiast.com

"The nose and palate are like a liquid chocolate orange, with dominant tangerine and satsuma notes along with milk chocolate. The palate is rich and toffee-like, but the roasted agave notes do shine through toward the back palate and with citrus peel and more chocolate in the finish." 88 points - distiller.com
