The Busker Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $81. 99
    Bottle
    $983.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44.3%

Matured in Bourbon and sherry casks, The Busker Single Pot Still is a style peculiar to Ireland, with both malted and unmalted barley in the mash; otherwise it's kind of similar to single malt, delivering more body and richness than a single grain alternative.

Other reviews... Red apples bob in a sea of pot still spice on the nose, with whole almond, strawberry tarts, and brown sugar lumps. This is smooth, light, and delicious, with grilled muffins, bourbon biscuits, spice, vanilla, and well-toasted granola, with a later development of plum and blackberry. Burnt sugar and more spice on the finish. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2020

...This was immediately my favorite of the group, with a more rounded, boldly malty nose that showcases the sherry much more clearly than in the Single Malt. Aromas of clean malt meld well with the sharper sherry note, evoking citrus peel and classic oily/nutty notes that are reminiscent at times of furniture polish. The palate is more aggressively malty, with notes of cut hay, leather, and more smoldering nuttiness with a lingering element of smoke evident. The finish sees more of the youthful characteristics of this line, with some hemp rope notes giving way to more sherry-driven citrus peel and a lengthy, oily nut character. All told it’s a fairly youthful whiskey, but it’s a solid example of the single pot still style that’s worth a look at this price. - drinkhacker.com

Dark Matter Spiced Mocha Liqueur (500ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $44. 99
    Bottle
    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 20%

This rum liqueur is the result of experimentation around a trio of distinctive yet complementary flavours. It combines the richness and roast of Arabica coffee and toasted South American cocoa seeds with a just a dash of heat from Aji chilli peppers, all over a base of Dark Matter's distinctive Rum. In the style you'd expect from this distillery, it's a far cry from your standard espresso martini mix, with its velvety palate and intense coffee and chocolate. The spice from the chilli balances the sweetness beautifully, and you'll wonder why it's never been added into coffee liqueurs before. No sedate after-dinner sipper, served over ice or play with a plethora of shaken drinks. Expect that next round of Espresso Martinis to be propelled to new heights. 20% Alc./Vol.

    Ester Dry Gin (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Crafted using a traditional all-in method of distillation and arriving at a proper and well-integrated 43%, the recipe employed here takes the clean, juniper-forward profile inspired by a classic London Drys combined with Ester’s own unique twist - a punch of savoury citrus flavour and the judicious accent of locally grown botanicals. Aromatically, a proud hit of juniper, coriander and liquorice root spike the spirit with dry spice and herbaceous intensity. Then unctuous, macadamia-enhanced texture floats across the tongue, animated by earthy citrus notes of native finger lime and lemon myrtle. Sweet mandarin lifts the finish while adding a twist of elegance. The result? An unfiltered, exceptionally classy and well-balanced Gin for classicists and modernists alike, and a natural for any traditional gin cocktails. Also recommended with a fresh bay leaf and a dry tonic. 43% Alc./Vol.

The Lark Distillery Para 100 Rare Cask Release Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml + 100ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $999. 00
    Bottle
    $11988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 61%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

First offered in 2021, Lark's Rare Cask 100 series is finished in a 100-year-old barrel that once held Seppeltsfield Para Vintage Tawny Port - the only Australian wine to have ever scored a 100/100 from James Halliday, with every vintage released since 1907.

“The Para Tawny casks were complex but very intense, so to avoid dominating the carefully-curated spirit we slowly finished the whisky in two casks over four batches”, says Lark founder Bill Lark, who went on the describe the result as “...impossibly long and luxurious, perfect for those intimate fireside chats with friends that extend well into the early hours of the morning”.

Each of the 410 bottles of the PARA100 come with a copper medallion that has been handcrafted from a decommissioned Lark copper pot still, which was also the case with the Rare Casks Series’ first release. Like its predecessor, the PARA100 is complemented by a 100ml bottle of the same whisky, so collectors who still want to sip the rare malt at their leisure don’t actually need to open the 700ml bottle.

Basil Hayden Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $78. 99
    Bottle
    $947.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The recipe for this Bourbon dates back to 1796, when Basil Hayden himself was a Master Distiller. Hayden was born and raised in Maryland, where he learned to make whisky from rye. When he came to Kentucky, Hayden began using a base of corn, but added a higher percentage of rye than other distillers, resulting in a smooth, mild bourbon that was distinctly his own. Nowadays Beam employ a mash bill of 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley, which is reportedly very close to the original.

Other reviews... Light amber color. Sweet corn, toffee, nuts and charred wood aromas have a lean edge. Round, vibrant entry leads to a dry medium-to full-bodied palate with somewhat lean oak, corn, and caramel flavors. Finishes with a warm wave of toffee, spice, and drying wood. 88 points -  tastings.com

...Interesting that the label says “Artfully Aged,” yet there’s no actual age statement. Lively nose, good rye snap and spice, a bit of mint and oaky edge. Not hot, well-behaved on the tongue, and happily gives back everything taken on the nose. Sweet, spicy, and easy to like, this is whiskey without flaw, well-done and tasty, if not overly ambitious or challenging. 85 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Lew Bryson (Fall 2014)

...Pretty old gold/amber color; superb purity. First whiffs encounter small measures of dusty dry cereal grains and black pepper; another six minutes of air contact unleash slightly grander aromas of saddle leather, toasted marshmallow and cooking spice (tarragon, parsley). Entry is gentlemanly, clean, understated and off-dry; midpalate offers moderately generous tastes of oak resin, English toffee/saltwater taffy and light, fresh honey. Concludes light as a feather and agreeably simple. While I think that this latest incarnation shows some fleeting character and stuffing, I recommend BH solely for bourbon newcomers and NOT for old hand bourbon drinkers who are used to big-hearted, rip-snortin’ whiskey. Veteran bourbon devotees won’t care for it, thinking it feeble. I understand that it was designed specifically for novices and the three people in the U.S. who appreciate ethereal bourbon, which by its nature is meant to be robust. - spiritjournal.com

Classic Cocktail: The Old Fashioned. The first use of the specific name 'Old Fashioned' was for a Bourbon whiskey cocktail in the 1880s, at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen’s club in Louisville, Kentucky. The recipe is said to have been invented by a bartender at that club, and popularized by a club member and bourbon distiller, Colonel James E. Pepper, who brought it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in New York City. When properly made, this cocktail can represent the pinnacle of the bartenders trade. When done improperly, which is more often the case, it can be a disaster of mediocrity. One of the oldest recipes known going by the name of Old Fashioned, comes from 'Modern American Drinks' by George J. Kappeler, published in 1895: “Dissolve a small lump of sugar with a little water in a whiskey-glass; add two dashes Angostura bitters, a small piece ice, a piece lemon-peel, one jigger whiskey. Mix with small bar-spoon and serve, leaving spoon in glass”. This very closely resembles the recipe which you should be served by a modern day bartender, but for reasons that are just a little unclear, you will generally be served something totally different.

1/2 Orange Slice, 1 cube of sugar, 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters, 60ml Basil Hayden's Bourbon whiskey (or Rye Whiskey)

Method: Muddle orange, sugar, bitters together until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Fill glass with ice, then add the whiskey. Garnish with a marachino cherry, and perhaps an additional orange slice. Serve with a swizzle stick and/or straw. - notes partially sourced from www.drinkboy.com

Aged for a minimum of 4 years on lees. A buoyant mousse rises to the top of the glass eventually  subsiding to reveal a salmon pink coloured base that has an exceptionally fine bead flowing through it. Lifted strawberry and yeast lees aromas intermingle with baked bread, citrus and brioche. Satiny in its feel, bready yeast lees flavours mix with hints of strawberry, citrus and delicate ginger. Dry, refreshing finish with a slightly chalky strawberry and yeasty baked bread aftertaste.

    Primitivo Quiles Moscatel NV (375ml)
    Alicante, SPAIN
    $24. 99
    Bottle
    $299.88 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
    Closure: Cork

Primitivo Quiles is the oldest bodega in the Alicante region, with the family producing wine since 1780. Alicante is the driest Spanish wine region, with 300mm or so rainfall per year. Despite the warm weather and low rainfall the wines retain good freshness and finesse due to the elevation and cool nights from the continental climate. Moscatel Romano (known elsewhere as Muscat of Alexandria, Lexia and Zibbibo) played an important part in the history of Alicante, as the coastline served as a prominent trade route where these durable (fortified) wines would more comfortably survive the journey.
This wine is produced in the "Mistella" method where pressed juice is fortified with neutral brandy spirit leaving 200g/l of residual sugar, making it ideal as an aperitif on ice, or served with cheese and fruit. The aroma is fragrant and floral with orange, straw, billy tea, and raisin, with a good balance of acidity and sweetness.

When it comes to Pinot Noir in Champagne, the grand cru villages of Bouzy and Ambonnay rank amongst the greatest in the region. And one of the most talented exponents from here is the Clouet family based in Bouzy. Champagne Andre Clouet have been producing Champagne for over two centuries, and under the guidance of Jean Francois Clouet the wines have never looked better. While his wines are exuberant and concentrated, Jean Francois manages to counter this with immaculate finesse and detail on the palate.

Un Jour de 1911... is a call back to the golden age of France in the early 20th century. Inspiration comes from a precious few bottles of Clouet Champagne that were uncovered after spending 80 years hidden in a small cellar.

    Other Reviews....
The NV Un jour de 1911... is another 100% Bouzy Pinot Noir with an ancient label design. The shining golden-colored cuvée combines ripeness, complexity and finesse with intensity and elegance on both the nose and palate. It's a powerful and rich yet very fine and balanced Champagne with great freshness and complex length. It is juicy and intense but also highly delicate, and its mineral tension and persistent finish make it a first-class wine for elaborate dishes. A great Champagne, with a label that doesn't give any more detailed information regarding vintages or disgorgement date, but we know it's always a 50/50 blend of three vintages (including one great millésime at least 10 years old) and reserve wines from a solera system. I tasted the wine as a Brut with Clouet's German importer in Bremen. You shouldn't drink it too early, as it would be a waste of its talents. Drink 2021 - 2033.

A rich and expansive champagne with tons of mature aromas of dried fruit (apricots!) and candied orange. Teeters on the edge of decadence, but has enough vitality to stay on the right side of that line. Plenty of textural complexity on the palate and a long, chalky finish that keeps giving and giving. Spot-on balance. Drink or hold.

The Fuligni 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine, and it shines a much-deserved spotlight on one of the most consistent estates in Montalcino. It is bright and luminous with a dark ruby shine. The bouquet reveals deeply layered tones of red cherry, wild berry, rose, earth and candied violets. Give the wine an extra twirl or two, and you get some rosemary and lavender. Soft dusty mineral and limestone also appear. I'd definitely put this bottle on a short list of the most recommended bottles from the 2017 vintage. Drink 2024 - 2044.

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is punchy and spry from the first tilt of the glass, featuring raspberry, roses, licorice and hints of flowery undergrowth. The bouquet darkens over time, taking on shades of cedar, along with blue and purple flowers. It’s silky, pliant and savory, masses of black cherry and spice filling the palate with silky textures that leave saturating minerals in their wake. This tapers off long, dry and primary, perfumed with violets and lavender, as cheek-puckering, tart red berries linger on. The 2017 may be a riper interpretation of Fuligni Brunello, but it has enough power and energy to be quite pleasurable and balanced over the medium term. All of the Riserva juice from 2017 went into the estate Brunello. Drink 2027-2027.

At 420 metres in Montalcino’s northeast, the Fuligni estate expands over 100 hectares, 14 of which are vineyards. Location provided some reprieve from the heat in 2017 and harvesting for Brunello began in mid-September. When I tasted this in September 2021, just three months after bottling, it was still very closed in its aromas. With coaxing, exotic suggestions of curry and anise surfaced furtively and eventually intrinsic ripeness became apparent. Nevertheless, the fruit remains fresh rather than macerated. A full and vigorous expression with grainy tannins that stretch out across the palate. Drinking Window 2024 - 2030.

Andrea Costanti has crafted an appetising and characterful 2017, expressive without being over-exuberant or pushed. He reports doing more extraction than usual, with extended post-fermentation macerations as skins were thick and healthy. The tannins are textured and gritty without being green or bitter. While this doesn’t have the profoundness of 2016 or the silkiness of 2015 there is much charm in its vigour. Polished wood, subtle smoke, plum and bay leaf emerge from a backdrop of dry, dusty earth while concentrated acidity keeps it vibrant. One of the stars of the vintage. Drinking Window 2023 - 2032.

Certified organic. Fruit from the Isolation Ridge vineyard on the estate property. The nose is so fragrant that it takes some time to unpick it all. Winter mandarin, pink peppercorn, citrus blossom, blackberry, plum, licorice, clove, star anise, lavender and fennel flower. In the mouth, the graphite and black-tea tannins are a masterclass in svelte. They weave and thread through all aspects of the experience, becoming briefly savoury, before trailing out over a long finish. It is the tannins that reveal to us how inchoate this wine truly is. It needs time. It will be superlative. For now, it is tightly wound, coiled even and needs time to unfurl and show its potential. What a profound wine. Wow. Owns the Syrah moniker.

The integration of oak and fruit is excellent here. Smoky bacon and black cherry flavours come across as seamless and united, apple juice acidity and raspberry notes adding freshness and brightness respectively. The smokiness of this wine is overt but positive, the assertive but well-folded (grainy) tannin likewise, so too the gentle woodiness bitterness on the finish. What I like most here is that there is flavour at every step: in the tannin, in the acidity, in the body and in the finish. Drink 2024 - 2033+

The colour has remarkable depth and youthful purpliness, with aromas that leap out of the glass and smack of blackberry, cassis and raspberry, floral and with the subtlest suggestion of jam. In the mouth, it's soft and round, supple and medium to full-bodied, with a fruit sweetness that really charms. It tastes like a blend rather than a pure Shiraz (Viognier?). The tannins are mild and svelte. A lovely wine with a big future in front of it.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review (February 2022)

    Notes from winery....
Our SmithCullam Syrah comes from the original “Winery Block” of Syrah planted in 1988. The wine homes in on the powerful, grainy ferrous tones from the ironstone soils, offset by the elegance achieved from organic farming and shading afforded these bunches by the east-west orientation of the rows. The wine is matured in large-format (3,500-litre) oak, which contributes to its freshness and juiciness. There’s a beautiful interplay between the earthiness and iodine notes of the Mourvèdre and the generosity and aromatics of the Viognier.

Produced in runs of around 1500 bottles, this sherry matured Matsui comes with very positive reviews from several quarters.

Other reviews... a plodding nose, but safe and secure with light grape and toffee on nodding terms; very young barley and toffee hold court until spice and dried plum notes begin to find their home; an unusual finale with an intense dryness at odds with the chest beating muscovado sugars; chewy and sticky, the youthfulness of this vatted malt is overcome by the intensity and richness of the malt and dark sugars. A complex, pleasing experience. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

    Suntory Ao World Whisky (700ml)
    JAPAN
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Released to Global Travel Retail in October 2020, this hybrid combines whiskies from the five most noteworthy regions in the world - Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the U.S. Suntory's Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo named the concept whisky 'Ao' meaning “blue” in Japanese, intended to evoke “the oceans that connect these distilleries together.” It's a whisky that pretty much does what the label suggests, offering a complex nose that wanders from sweet grains to more robust malt while also suggesting young Bourbon and trace smoke. Supple and integrated, the palate is a demonstration of Fukuyo's skills, starting out with faint citrus, vanilla and tea biscuits, building body and wood spice into the gently malty / smokey finale. It's followed by fruit'nut'chocolate and a light bourbon (or grain whisky) character through the aftertaste. Ultimately resembling a well-crafted malt-heavy blend, 'Ao' possesses some of the weight and character of a fruity Speysider, but with the grace and sweetness of an Irish Pot still or Canadian grain giving overall form and definition - especially through the finish. Also beautifully presented. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose of the whisky evokes Scotch mostly, arguably a blend (which is fitting, considering that’s basically what this is) vs. a single malt. Notes of well-toasted, heathery grain, a touch of smoke, and some lemon-heavy citrus are all evident, along with a honey note that recalls some Irish bottlings. The palate doesn’t really shake the boat, offering a malty core that’s touched with milk chocolate and some vanilla — perhaps the Jim Beam showing through, though just barely. From there the whisky adopts an earthier note, sultry but subtle, and nodding at some of the more aggressive wood elements you’ll find in Suntory’s Japanese stock, finishing with a reprise of citrus, just a bit. The balance, much to my surprise, is impeccable. While you’d have to be a savant to pick out all the component elements, Fukuyo has put them together so artfully that one really doesn’t feel like they need to bother trying. As the highest-end of infinity bottles, Suntory Ao is one to seek out… next time you’re in an airport, anyway. It’s currently available at travel retail outlets only. - drinkhacker.com

"There's a very gentle mix of char and peat smoke on the nose. Sweet malt, toasted oak and a fruity note (mostly oranges) come through as well. The whisky is moderately rich on the palate with sweet/tart flavor profile mixed with barrel spices. There's a more than average length to the bittersweet finish. Very easy to drink. Overall, taste wise you get more of the European and Japanese whiskies coming through than the North American ones. Overall, an intriguing whisky, which for the price, makes a good value. " - distiller.com

Notes from the producers... aromas and flavours of orange peel, banana and mild spice in a multi-layered delivery that leads into a pleasingly smoky finish.

The Elementa is the second of Glenmorangie's new Travel Retail whiskies released in late 2020, in this case, celebrating the art of wood finishing. Thirteen years in bourbon barrels followed by nine to twelve months in charred virgin American oak casks results in an unusual age statement with sweet, woody depths and a spicy edge that's also creamy with notes of vanilla, lemon peel and crystalised ginger. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Nose: Quite gentle at first. Strawberries, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper, just a touch of aged balsamic. Slabs of toffee and rose petals, peanut brittle. Soft as possible wood notes. Oak chests. Palate: Sweet and all that honey comes in. Fruit as well with those strawberries, oak gets a grip. Fizzy sherbet. Treacle tart, jammy with plump blackcurrants. Finish: Long, sweet and honeyed, just a hint of bitter walnut skin to balance it. Ginger prickle eventually. Comment: Fairly well balanced and straight forward too. - whiskymag.com

Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.

Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.

Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

Roselle’s wine-base is Heathcote-grown Nebbiolo and Mourvèdre fermented as rosé, which is fortified with the unique blend of botanical tinctures.  Sugars are entirely residual from the grapes, at around 100 g/l. The dryer, aperitivo style of bitter produced lends itself to a variety of pours. Serve neat as a digestif, with soda or try a local twist on the Negroni. 22% Alc./Vol.

Looking like small grapefruits, the Asian Yuzu fruit has been the inspiration for several Japanese gins, aiming to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. This is not the first time Four Pillars have experimented with the fruit. A limited edition collaborative bottling was launched in 2017. It was followed in 2019 with the Distiller Series 'Changing Seasons Gin' made with help from Japan's Kyoto Distillery. As of 2022, Four Pillars are including 'Fresh Yuzu Gin' as a permanent addition to their core range.

Mountain Yuzu, from the nearby Ovens Valley supply the Healesville-based distillery with fresh yuzus. Describing the flavour of the new gin, Co-founder and Distiller Cam Mackenzie comments, “Yuzu brings amazing aromatics that are a mix of lemon, mandarin, cumquat and grapefruit – all bright and fresh citrus notes – while the addition of finger lime adds some deeper citrus character. We’ve also learnt a lot (from the best) in our adventures making gin with Japanese friends, so in our take on Yuzu gin, we’ve used ginger, turmeric and sencha genmaicha, a Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice, for depth of flavour. A canvas of strong pine-needle juniper and a bit of lemon myrtle add a touch of lemon curd.”

Drink it however you like to drink your favourite gin, but it’s at its best in a Highball with plenty of ice, soda or light tonic and any kind of citrus garnish (best of all would be fresh yuzu, if you can find it!) 41.8% Alc./Vol.

This is the new version of the 21 year old classic from Appleton, arriving in an updated bottle and box presentation. First launched in 1996 and named after the heart of Jamaica, the Nassau Valley, the reimagined expression reveals "...a floral scent that develops into a unique mature nutty bouquet, with notes of vanilla, orange peel, nutmeg, almond, coffee and cocoa for a long, dry and luscious finish."

The blend of rare and hand-selected pot and column still rums have all been tropically aged for a minimum of 21 years. Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, 400 ft above sea level, surrounded by limestone hills ranging up to 2,000 ft, provides beautifully filtered waters to the Estate-harvested cane.

“Jamaica is a place unlike anywhere else in the world,” notes Master Blender, Joy Spence. “With Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Nassau Valley Casks, we wanted to celebrate our home in an elevated, modern way with a new sleek, sophisticated version...”

Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Medium mahogany color. Aromas and flavors of warm banana bread, cinnamon toast, roasted pineapple, and caramel spiced nuts with a silky, crisp, dry medium body and a tingling, subtle, medium-long finish imparting notes of bananas foster, cinnamon butter on banana bread, smoky black pepper, and peanut brittle. Delicious with an excellent depth of flavor, sit down and enjoy this with a cigar and a great book; a classic for the classics. 95 points - tastings.com

Here there is no reductive funk as there is a lovely purity to the super-fresh and quite floral nose of red currants, spice and newly turned earth. There is an almost painful intensity to the highly energetic and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that already offer impressive depth and sneaky good length. Despite having reasonable size and weight, this is not an especially big Bonnes Mares though it is one allied with plenty of power and punch. Drink 2036+.

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from two parcels and contains 100% whole-bunch fruit. That stem addition is noticeable on the nose but combines well with the broody black fruit, white pepper and wild mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, nice focus and a sappy finish that lacks a little persistence and grip. Just needs to show more sophistication. Drink 2024 - 2042.

100% whole bunch vinification. Pretty pink purple, no especial depth, and doesn’t need it. Another sublime bouquet coupling the floral with the purity of clean berry fruit. Leaner and tenser than the Charmes. Excellent fruit and acid balance, the whole bunch aspect remains an integral but not too overt part of the wine. Very long.

Once again, the amphore demonstrates its advantages in very ripe vintages as the nose is appealingly fresh with an even spicier array of plum, violet, anise and cinnamon scents. Medium deep crimson purple, the bouquet is soft and ripe, at this stage I think I may be preferring the barrel. Very ripe but agreeably fresh aromas include those of baked plum, anise, clove, violet, lavender and an interesting hint of sandalwood. An impressive showing, the 2019 Saint Joseph Sainte-Epine features aromas and flavors of blueberries and black cherries, plus hints of violets, peppery spice and black olives. It's full-bodied, but it carries its labeled 15% alcohol well, with no sign at all of alcoholic warmth, while supple tannins give a welcome sense of gentle structure and add a softly dusty feel to the long finish. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-accented black/blue fruits, Moroccan spices, olive and candied flowers, along with a smoky mineral element that builds as the wine opens up. Juicy, energetic and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors that deepen steadily through the midpalate. While the twelve year old is a relatively non-descript malt, older Glenfiddich bottlings are now gaining high praise including one award as the world's best single malt Scotch whisky. However, as a representation of the house style, the 18 year old pretty much nails it. Always a centre-piece of the portfolio, the company has further emphasised its place by redesigning the packaging to give it a more superior look than its 12- and 15-year-old stablemates.

The Glenfiddich distillery lies on the river whose name it bears. 'Fiddich' refers to the fact that the river runs through a valley inhabited by deers – hence the company's logo which features a stag. A proportion of the whisky in this version of Glenfiddich is supposedly even older than the label suggests.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas include honey, clove and vanilla laced malt. On the palate, dried apricots and spice are augmented by soft peat, adding depth to the toasty malt. Plush mouth feel. Clean, dried fruit and spice finish. Rich and round, in the mainstream of Sherry influenced malts. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... the smoke which for long marked this aroma, appears to have vanished...one of the most complex deliveries Speyside can conjure....long, despite the miserly 40% offered, with plenty of banana custard and a touch of pear; at the moment, the ace in the Glenfiddich pack. If this was bottled at 46%, unchillfiltered etc, I dread to think what the score might be. 95 points- Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2016

Vincent Paris is a native of Cornas, a Northern Rhône appellation famous for its steep, granite, terraced slopes. Vincent’s first vintage was in 1997, having inherited vineyards from his grandfather and purchased some from his uncle, legendary Cornas vigneron Robert Michel, on his retirement in 2006. The biodynamically farmed vineyards are located in various parcels along the southeast facing Cornas slope. Vincent’s Granit 30 and Granit 60 take their names from the slope and gradient of the vineyards and average vine age respectively. Vincent’s famed 100+ year old, 1.3 hectare La Geynale parcel, in the Reynard area of Cornas and owned by his family for four generations, is comprised of old vines planted by his great-grandfather in 1910.

    Other Reviews....
Consumers loath to explore Cornas because of ever-increasing prices should consider Vincent Paris's 2020 Cornas Granit 30 when it is released. Hints of violets, crushed stone, licorice and cassis all appear on the nose of Paris's entry-level cuvée, providing ample complexity. A strong effort, it's full-bodied, ripe and silky in texture, with a lingering finish. It may not be classic, put-hair-on-your-chest rustic Cornas, but it's a delicious mouthful of Syrah that's true to its granitic origins. Drink 2023 - 2032.

Starting with what could be considered the entry level cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Granit 30 comes from further down the slope, from vines closer to the village. That's obviously not a bad thing, since this plump, full-bodied, beautifully textured Cornas has remarkable purity and elegance as well as richness. Blackberries, blueberries, subtle smoke, graphite, and violets all emerge from the glass, and it has a seamless, incredibly elegant texture.

Very herbal, with leafy herbs like tarragon alongside woody herbs such as rosemary. Blueberry and liquorice too. Middleweight style, good concentration of fresh, juicy berry fruit and good persistence. Fresh, intense, gently saline and well-balanced. A good value pick this year. From 10-year-old vines, all destemmed. Drinking Window 2022 - 2028.

    2018 Ao Yun Shangri-La
    CHINA
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Ao Yun is the realisation of a dream to produce world class, Bordeaux-style wine from China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr. Tony Jordan embarked on a four year long mission to scour the terrain of China for an ideal climate to produce top class Cabernet Sauvignon. Settling in the foothills of the Himalayas, to the north of the Yunnan province, Ao Yun hails from the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La. Sitting at an altitude ranging between 2,200 and 2,600 metres above sea level, the estate is named after the magnificent clouds that gather above the permanently snow-capped mountain ranges: in Mandarin, “Ao Yun” means “flying above the clouds”.

Farming is handled by local families across the 28 hectares of vineyards, divided among 314 blocks with 727 tiny sub-parcels. Organic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, while everything is done by hand with no machinery. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot.

I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

Having tasted the 2018 Ao Yun for the first time in May 2021 at high altitude in the village of Adong (where the Ao Yun winery is located), it was fascinating to retaste this vintage much closer to sea level in Beijing on December 2, 2021. This proved to be a useful comparative opportunity too, having only a few hours earlier shown the 2017 vintage in a tasting of various Shangri-La wines in Beijing the evening before. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. As observed in my note from May, this blend shows increased confidence in some of the other varieties coming more online in Ao Yun’s four village sites of Xidang, Sinong, Shuori and Adong (with Merlot playing an increased role). The 2018 Ao Yun maintains its very deep purple appearance. On the nose, albeit youthful, there is already open and abundant super-ripe cassis, black cherry, mulberry, blueberry and black plum fruit with less pyrazine observable in this bottle (although this becomes more overt on the palate). That core of fruit is complemented by subtle new oak notes of clove, toast and smoke. On the palate, the 2018 Ao Yun has abundant, fine-grained and coating tannins with some lively acidity and well-integrated 14.5% alcohol, these structural elements being well-knitted together with the vibrant core of fruit, touch of herbaceous character (sage, mint) and subtle new oak notes. With its long length and marked concentration, although youthful, the 2018, tasted closer to sea level, has the kind of approachability similar to some Napa Cabernet blends. But it is unquestionably super youthful and is taking on entirely its own identity as the very best blend of these four remarkable village vineyard sites (each at different altitudes). The 2018 is just nudging ahead of the 2017 and 2015 in terms of quality. It will be fascinating to see its evolution in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Gorgeously seductive nose, this is rich and abundant, aromas bursting out the glass, smells sweet and spicy, five spice fragrance with sweet blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. Mouthcoating and invigorating on the palate, totally harmonious and balanced with the salinity and wet stone nuances coming through backed by ripe, but so well defined, fruit flavors. Such purity on both the nose and palate. This is seriously refined, aromatics are preserved, balancing power with excellent acidity, so you get these bright and energetic flavours but still with structure. Seductive but this also has a sense of classicism. Lovely saline elements and cooling touch at the end with all the flavours lingering long in the mouth. Will be interesting to see how it ages. Drinking Window 2029 - 2045.

Polished, smooth and ripe tannins that have plenty of movement in them. Ao Yun has been a wine with confidence and personality since its first vintage of 2013, and here balances concentrated damson and black cherry fruits with fragrant black tea, mandarin peel and sage together with earthier smoked cumin and saffran spice. 2018 was a late harvest through to November 15 (beginning September 7) and ripening under cooler, dry skies in November has translated into drawn out sculpted flavours that reflect the mountain site, and low yields of 21hl/h. Initial ageing took place in 50% Chinese earthenware jars and 50% oak barrels for five months, then a further 10 months in 30% new oak barrels. The team introduced village crus in this year also, drawing them from the four villages where the vines are located, and keeping 54% of overall production for Ao Yun itself - just another clue to the ambitions at this briliant estate. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

You'll have to wait until 2021 for this release, but it absolutely will reward your patience. What an exceptionally fine creation this is, the 2015 Barolo Vite Talin. It is soft and generous, with great concentration, and the dark fruit shows more fleshiness in the mouth. The tannins have become softer in the 2015 edition. While the 2014 could be described as wild and robust with its spicy, herbal and meaty notes, this Barolo Vite Talin is all about elegance. It is simply beautiful, a feather in any cellar's cap. A mere 2,200 bottles were made. Drink 2024 - 2050.

The 2015 Barolo Vite Talin has really shut down since I tasted it last year, which is probably a very good thing for its long-term prospects. Radiant and lush on the palate, the 2015 marries fruit intensity with structure to great effect. Far from an easygoing Barolo, the 2015 is going to need the better part of a decade to be at its best and most expressive; but still, the 2015 is super impressive today. Drink 2023 - 2040.

A dense, muscular red, saturated with plum, cherry, licorice, menthol and iron flavors. The burly tannins gain the upper hand on the finish for now, yet this shows balance and the freshness and structure should develop beautifully. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Camphor, pressed rose, red berries, dried botanical herbs and a whiff of fruitcake are just some of the aromas you'll find on this drop-dead gorgeous wine. Full-bodied and focused, the compelling palate shows mesmerizing tension, structure and finesse, delivering ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, cinnamon and licorice before a tobacco finish. Noble tannins and fresh acidity provide ample support and balance. Drink 2023–2045.

The 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is super impressive. Early signs of aromatic nuance have started to develop, but just barely. More than anything else, the 2011 impresses for its body and pure depth, both of which the 2011 has in spades. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and spice all build as this dramatic Barolo shows off its allure. The 2011 has aged beautifully. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade. Aromas of menthol, pressed rose, wild berry and grilled herb are front and center in this stunning wine along with a whiff of forest floor. While based in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Taupenot-Merme has collection of prime vineyards across both the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune. A significant proportion of their 13 hectare holdings are in premier and grand cru plots, including the grands crus Clos des Lambrays, Charmes-Chambertin, Corton-Rognet and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Much of these vineyards contain old vines which have been supplemented with newer plantings from massale selections of their strongest vines.

Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot is in charge of winemaking, aided by his sister Virginie. Organic farming has been practiced since 2001, and once harvested grapes are 100% de-stemmed before a cold soak and indigenous fermentation. Oak use is also sympathetic with only 25% new oak used for the village wines and up to 40% for the grand and premier cru. While the wines can carry a healthy degree of richness, they are always balanced by freshness so as to be a pure and faithful representation of their origin.

La Riotte is one of Morey's leading premiers crus, with mostly very old vines and the same geology as Mazoyères containing calcareous soil rich in clay. Taupenot-Merme has a 0.57ha parcel and the estate’s vines are more than 60 years old on average.

    Other Reviews....
Earthier and less elegant though still pretty aromas are composed by notes of plum and dark berries laced with hints of spice and floral, especially violet. There is again very good verve and freshness to the delicious and caressing yet quite punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture thanks to the sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the slightly longer and more complex finale. This is one to consider, especially for aging over the mid to even longer-term. Drink 2029+.

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is stubborn and austere on the nose at the moment, red berry fruit and damp loam aromas/woodland scents gradually unfurling, hints of cepes. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit mixed with white pepper and sage. Classic in style, nicely focused, this builds in the mouth and exerts good grip on the finish with impressive length on the aftertaste. Great potential but will benefit from cellaring. Drink 2024 - 2038.

Fine crimson purple, the nose is quite restrained, before a significant weight of fruit, a touch of heat too, dark raspberry notes, and a touch of alcohol to finish. Just enough acidity, slightly dry tannins.

A notably ripe yet still agreeably fresh combination reveals its aromas of dark currant, warm earth, the sauvage and a discreet hint of wood. There is once again very good energy to the nicely detailed and lightly stony medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprising inner mouth perfume, all wrapped in a lingering and solidly powerful finale. This is a quality Gevrey villages and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village does not quite have the expressiveness of the Morey Village on the nose and demands more coaxing, a little broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit with touches of sous-bois and white pepper. Lovely balance here and the precision on the finish compensates for the bashful aromatics. It will need 24 months once in bottle and fingers crossed the nose will step up a gear. Drink 2023 - 2032.

I thought that the village Gevrey-Chambertin showed a ripe fruit profile when I tasted it, but in fact the degree is a very manageable 13.1%. Fine mid purple, riper fruit here and some deep very ripe strawberry, with plenty of flesh on the palate.

    ABV: 40%

Classic juniper-led aromas of crushed pine buds, coriander seed, lemon zest and white pepper follow in a light, creamy gin with a medium-spiced, savoury finish showing attractive vibrancy and lift. Recommended for drier-styled Martinis. Botanicals include juniper, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Orris Root and Old Man Saltbush. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Although creating a 'classic' gin is deceptively tricky, refraining from using too many botanicals and including saltbush works wonders for Hickson House. They've created a sophisticated, almost steely-in-character gin. The saltbush complements the gin well, enhancing the green spice notes found in juniper and the drier coriander seed notes, which create the atmosphere of an early morning stroll along the beach. Bottled at 40%, the gin does have a slight viscosity to the finish – an attribute that allows distinguishable flavours to come through when drinking neat. 90 points - Jess Clayfield, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Notes from the producers... AROMA Prominent juniper with subtle herbaceous notes FLAVOUR Juniper-forward with coriander spice mid-palate. Finishes with gentle salinity FINISH Dry, aromatic and viscous with saltbush lasting on the finish.

Mikey Enright and Julian Train know a thing or two about gin. They're the founders of the award-winning Barrelhouse Group – the team behind 'The Duke of Clarence' and 'The Barber Shop', the latter announced as The World’s Best Gin Bar by the UK’s prestigious Gin Magazine in 2020. They're also the creative force behind this new Sydney start-up. Situated at 6 Hickson Road, The Rocks, in the heritage-listed Metcalfe Bond Stores, they're joined by Head Distiller, Tim Stones, ex-Manly Spirits and Global Brand Ambassador for Beefeater Gin, where he learnt his craft under Master Distiller, Desmond Payne. There are several gins currently on offer under the Hickson House label. The 'Australian Dry' comes packed full of the usual suspects - juniper, orange peel, coriander and liquorice root along with a good dose of Australian native thyme, myrtle and finger lime. The latter comes through strongly on the nose, backed up by more traditional gin notes, though overall the aromas remain on the fresh, fruity side. At 42%, this is a light-to-medium bodied style with dried lime peel, lime confectionary, native potpourri and a subtle saline note through the zesty finish. It fades dry and minerally with faint citrus in tow. Recommended for lively Martinis.

Notes from the producers... AROMA Juniper-forward followed by sherbet-like citrus and herbal notes. FLAVOUR Round and complex, juicy citrus with herbal aniseed leading into a lingering earthy finish. FINISH Vibrant palate coating viscosity. Bright, citrusy, savoury and moreish.

A gentle touch of wood sets off elegant, pure and exceptionally fresh aromas of just sliced green apple, citrus confit and discreet floral nuances. There is excellent volume and richness to the bigger and markedly more powerful flavors that brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract on the wonderfully long finish. Still in barrel unracked and unfined. Full bright yellow with a little cheerful plump toasty oak. The weight shows first, the Corton-Charlemagne minerals come through behind.
