Rare Macallans

“...Ask any distillery manager his second favourite dram and as often as not the Macallan is it.” So wrote Jim Murray.
It's a truism that resonates with a small group of 'Macallan chasers' who simply will not settle for less. Our many years of selling fine Single Malt Scotch have acquainted us with several savvy collectors who've patiently acquired bottlings from this Grand Marque over decades. Every so often limited editions and 'antiques' are re-released, some bottlings so rare that they're now difficult to procure even in larger European markets. We also regularly source duty free exclusives. So if there's a rare Macallan you're looking for that's not listed, call us on 1800 069 295 and we'll try to track it down.
The Macallan Director's Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $399. 00
    Bottle
    $4788.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: Box has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks.

Part of the 1700 Series, the 'Director's Edition' was aged in ex-sherry casks and is one of two special editions that were released in late 2011. The other was the 'Master’s Edition' aged in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Both of these whiskies were NAS and were reportedly discontinued a few years later. At the time of writing, this is one of only a few we've seen from the secondary market. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Bottle
    $119988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Collectors note: Overall excellent condition. Minor lifting to the sides of the front label. One only.

A rare version of Macallan's 25 year old Sherry oak. Released for a short time in a striking red wooden box, these editions were originbally available between 2002 and 2004 and were the first bottlings from which Macallan dropped the year of distillation from the label. There are no records of how many bottles of Macallan 25 year old were released annually – even Macallan say they did not keep a record. 43% Alc./Vol.

The Macallan Fine Oak 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2005 Release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $799. 00
    Bottle
    $9588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
A fairly old bottling of Macallan's Fine Oak 18, the bottle and box in very good condition. One only from a private collection.

Research suggests this is from an early period shortly after when the Fine Oak range was first released back in '04. Macallan will not corroborate this as our research is based on the LOT code and they have not kept complete records. However online whisky forums (unofficial) say that "if a Macallan Lot code is L0998D L10 22:11 11:35, then...the L0998 is a batch code, the D is year, the L10 is Line, the 22:11 is Day:Month and the 11:35 is time." The code on this bottle is L1011E L10 22 1 1 14:38

    More from the blogosphere: "Apparently they run as "2004 = D through to 2017 = Y. U and V were skipped. So was X. 2011-2013 must correspond to 3 of the following 7 letters: L, M, N, O, P, Q.

The Macallan Sherry Matured 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) - 1980s Bottling
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00
    Bottle
    $17988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
This was an I.H. Baker import who were taken over by Matthew Clark or Remy in the late 1980s so it's reasonable to classify it as a 1980's bottling, which also accords with our historical experience of the brand over more than 40 years.
Note: some minor blemishes to the presentation box. Overall very good to excellent condition for its age. 43% Alc./Vol.
1971 The Macallan Anniversary Malt 25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $10999. 00
    Bottle
    $131988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
A very rare Macallan aged for over 25 years in sherry casks. Distilled 1971.

If you're after more detail on the provenance of this bottling, this from the Macallan Marketing department:
"We stopped referring to our 25 years old as the Anniversary Malt in 2004 but the wooden Burgundy box was only in place for less than 2 years so I would suggest that your bottle was released in 2002/3. The year of distillation was removed a year or two before that as this conveyed that all the whisky contained therein was distilled in that year, whereas this was not always the case. There is frequently older whisky contained in the vatting... the bottle will contain whisky distilled in 1978 or before." 43% Alc./Vol.

1996 The Macallan Fine Oak 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 2014 Release

    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Macallans from yesteryear are rarely surfacing now. The Fine Oak range was launched back in 2004. This expression is a relatively late release in the series, with the lot code reading L0469S L2 31/10 06:26.
One only to sell. Note some very minor creasing to the box as pictured. Grab it while you can! 43% Alc./Vol.
The Macallan 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Annual 2020 Release
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $11999. 00
    Bottle
    $143988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
Considered the richest in the range, and now labelled from their date of release rather than the date of distillation, the newly packaged Macallan 30 follows a long tradition being matured in hand-picked oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez for added flavour and complexity. Sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the watchful eye of Macallan's Master of Wood, these hand-picked casks are delivered to the demanding specifications of the Macallan team. The result is a hefty sherry matured malt, laden with dried fruits, sherry, orange and wood smoke. Comes handsomely packaged in a laser etched, solid oak timber presentation box. 43% Alc./Vol.
2019 The Macallan Concept Number 2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not shown.

'Concept Number 2' is the second single malt in the Concept series created exclusively for global travel retail. Packaged as a celebration of music, the idea came from Macallan Whisky Maker, Steve Bremner who by day blends whisky and by night mixes music as a DJ.

Says Bremner, “Music has inspired many aspects of my life, both creatively and practically, as has whisky, so the creation of Concept Number 2 allowed me to look at my two passions through a different lens. Creating a track and crafting a single malt can take a similar path. Beginning with the layering of sounds just like the layering of different flavours from specific cask types. Each different cask brings its own influence to the character of the liquid, like each instrument, or sound, adds depth to a track. In both cases, we can alter each different element to play up or down particular sounds or flavours.”

Taste wise, Macallan describe sherry-seasoned American oak bringing a rhythmic sweetness of vanilla, citrus and toffee, while the rounded spiciness of Miguel Martin sherry casks create an energetic treble. Ex-bourbon casks introduce harmonies of floral citrus and vanilla. 40% Alc./Vol.

    ABV: 43%
Note there are some blemishes to the bottle label and the tin is slightly indented with minor markings. Excellent fill level.

A rare 100% Sherry matured Macallan, imported by Remy Australia Ltd so it should be a late 80s or early 90s bottling. The deep colour is quite spectacular. 43% Alc./Vol.

Research suggests this is from when the Fine Oak range was first released back in '04. Macallan will not corroborate this as our research is based on the LOT code and they have not kept complete records. However online whisky forums (unofficial) say that "if a Macallan Lot code is L0998D L10 22:11 11:35, then...the L0998 is a batch code, the D is year, the L10 is Line, the 22:11 is Day:Month and the 11:35 is time."

Do your research and you'll see the price is very reasonable. (Full sets tend to command a premium).

First released in 2015 with Edition #1 (now selling for $2 - 2.5K+), Macallan's Edition series represents a stream of NAS bottlings, with each edition focusing on a different cask regime.

The Macallan 10 Year Old Sherry Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - mid 2000s bottling

The Macallan Fine Oak 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Circa 2005
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $599. 00
    Bottle
    $7188.00 Dozen
    ABV: 43%
One bottle only. Note the box has some bruising as pictured.

Other reviews... This is my favorite of the three. For about $20 more, you get a richer, much more complex whisky than the 10 year old, and it is more balanced than the 21 year old. This 15 is drier than the 10, with lovely floral and spice notes (cinnamon, coriander, dried orange peel, lavender, rose), balanced by honey-laced complex fruit, and a dry, dark chocolate/orange marmalade finish.

The Macallan 1824 Collection Whisky Maker's Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42.8%

Note: This is sourced from a private collection so some allowance should be made for minor handling damage.

Macallan's "1824 Collection" consists of four expressions – "Select Oak", "Whisky Maker’s Edition", "Estate Reserve" and "1824 Limited Release". They were created by Macallan’s whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno, who's named this expression as 'his own', stating on the back label that it has been created “…for his personal enjoyment and bottled at his preferred strength...”

Dalgarno adds, “I’m a traditionalist at heart and 42.8% is the same as the old 75˚ Imperial Proof – the usual bottling strength before January 1st 1980, when it was dropped to 40%Vol...The bottle does not have an age statement, so I have greater liberty in balancing flavours from various ages - although I have not used any whiskies under about 12 years in this vatting, and there are some much older. Since it’s a one-off, I don’t have to worry about consistency with previous batches. It’s also a challenge making something for Duty Free, where there is such a mix of consumers and palates”

Other reviews... Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut Chocolate came immediately to mind when I first nosed this whisky, with distinct spiciness behind. The colour is polished mahogany, indicating the use of European oak casks, and setting up the expectation that it will be a ‘traditional’ Macallan. It does not disappoint! The label describes it as being ‘layered with Fruit and Spice’, and so it is – raisins and sultanas, black pepper and allspice - but all bound up with dry, even powdery, milk chocolate. Water freshens it considerably – oak shavings; tinned pears with sponge – then covers it with melted toffee. The texture is smooth; the taste, straight, is dry overall, after a trace of caramel in mid-palate and some lingering tobacco in the spicy finish. Water adds sweetness, texture and length: a medium to long finish, with some spice and an aftertaste reminiscent of Sticky Toffee Pudding, slightly burnt. - Charles Maclean, Whisky Writer.

The Macallan Exceptional Single Cask 2017/ESH-6270/12 Limited Edition Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    ABV: 59.4%
Originally available in the UK and parts of Asia, the "Exceptional Single Cask" series was launched in 2017, with all whiskies entirely matured in Sherry-seasoned casks filled between 1995 and 2004 and with age statements ranging from 12 to 22 years.

Distilled in 2005 and bottled in December 2017 after maturation in a European Oak Sherry butt, Exceptional cask No.12 was finally bottled at natural strength with a tiny outturn of just 257 bottles. Fantastic colour (in fact, almost as deep as number one in the series) suggesting some serious sherry at play. One only to sell.

Notes from Macallan... Rich, sweet dried fruits with a hint of chocolate orange. Balanced dried fruits with a spicy ginger and cinnamon burst. Long and spicy yet sweet. 59.4% Alc./Vol.

This sublime spirit has enjoyed a cult following with demand for the precious malt continually outstripping supply. Now it is no longer produced, with The Macallan repositioning and re calssifying its range in a remarkable marketing move as of 2013. Compare the price of the even rarer 50 Year Old at $25,000 and this presents a clear collector's opportunity.

Rated 100 out of 100 by the Beverage Institute of Chicagoin 1999.

"My personal favourite whisky is The Macallan. The 10 year old is marvellous, the 18 year old is superb while the 25 year old is sensational." - Lord McAlpine.

Notes from Macallan... One of life’s genuinely incomparable experiences. Deepest mahogany in colour with fiery copper highlights. The nose displays a heady sherry sweetness set against a background of citrus fruits and wood smoke. The intensity of the nose follows onto the rich, full palate, reflecting the additional years of sherry oak ageing. Full bodied with elegant dried fruits, a lingering oak smoke aroma and silky complexity. The finish is full and lingers exceptionally long in the mouth. Simply outstanding.

NOTE: Occasionally, as with fine wines, a small amount of precipitate may appear in the Macallan. This results from the characteristic ingredients of malt whisky and has no effect upon the aroma or flavour, nor any adverse effect upon health. It is a phenomena confined to the highest quality wood grade malt whiskies.Notes partially sourced from Macallan. For more information, visit www.themacallan.com

    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $8499. 00
    Bottle
    $101988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44.5%
Unlike anything Macallan has ever offered, unless you enter into the world of antiques and collectables – but even then you’ll need to go a long way back... Simply called Macallan ‘M’, it is arguably the distillery's most luxurious release to date. Assembled over two years from seven first-fill oloroso sherry casks hand selected from a vast inventory of 195,000 barrels. These historical malts delve deep into some of the very rarest stocks while staying true to the sherry cask ‘house style’ that's made Macallan synonymous with Speyside’s finest. The oldest material was distilled in 1940, so not surprisingly, the whisky itself is deeper and darker than their 25-year-old. First offered in 2013 at 89 proof, ‘M’ was intended to be an ongoing (albeit extremely limited) addition to the brand’s 1824 series of top-tier whiskies. The initial tranche was less than 1800 bottles.

It comes packaged to impress in a crystal decanter conceived by fashion/ luxury goods designer, Fabien Baron, in collaboration with the famed crystal house, Lalique. The individually numbered handmade, mouth-blown crystal decanters are finished in an intimidating deluxe black lacquered box. We have one bottle to sell.

Bob Dalgarno describes ‘M’ as “one of the richest and rarest whiskies ever pulled from The Macallan’s Spanish sherry oak casks, identified with more than 25 flavours including port-like notes and elements of brown sugar and dark chocolate.”

Given the blue chip credentials of Macallan as an investment, you can go for it now, or find it at auction down the track, but we all know where the price is likely to finish up in the decades to come. One indicator is the 2015 sale of an imperial 6-litre Macallan M – one of just four of its kind created. It became the most expensive whisky ever sold at auction (at the time of writing). Another is marked by current market prices for pre-war stocks which have reached upwards of AU$60,000 / bottle in recent times.

Created for the United States and parts of Asia, the "Exceptional Single Cask" series was launched in 2017, with all whiskies entirely matured in Sherry-seasoned casks filled between 1995 and 2004 and with age statements ranging from 12 to 22 years.

Distilled in 2004 and bottled in August 2017 after maturation in a European Oak Sherry butt, Exceptional cask No.2 was finally bottled at natural strength with an outturn of 298 bottles. From this beautiful, ruby-red coloured Macallan, expect aromas and flavours of dried raisins, honey and toasted almonds as well as root ginger and spice. Natural colour and non chill filtered.

More from Charlie Whitfield, manager of brand education and prestige whiskies, via a press release: “At the heart of The Macallan Estate sits the sample room, and within it the Whisky Maker’s bench; the place where inspiration and dedication come together in the creation of The Macallan single malt,” He adds, “Over years, and even centuries, an incredibly diverse range of whisky samples have graced the whisky maker’s bench. This new range, bottled at cask strength, presents those particular cask samples which have taken our Whisky Makers by surprise. The Macallan’s ‘Exceptional Single Cask’ range provides an opportunity to experience these moments.”

Folio 5 commemorates an advert featuring the tale of a “Luggy Bonnet” with the words “Keep this knot firmly tied”. The sketched image recollects a scene of acquaintances at the end of a day on Speyside when one sportsman talks of a so-called “disaster”, missing the opportunity of a dram of The Macallan from the "Laird" as a result of his hat covering his ears. 43% Alc./Vol.

“...Ask any distillery manager his second favourite dram and as often as not the Macallan is it.” So wrote Jim Murray. It's a truism that resonates with a small group of 'Macallan chasers' who simply will not settle for less. All the better when the whisky in question is natural strength.

This is the second 'Classic Cut' we've managed to secure, part of a limited annual series celebrating Macallan's ongoing commitment to "seek out the extraordinary." While the official distillery website has had these on offer, they obviously didn't produce huge volumes as sales were restrictied to one bottle per customer. More often than not, sources for these rarities are typically private collections. While the 2018 is a very recent expression (at least for the US market), the Classic Cuts are true to 'traditional' Macallan form, being matured exclusively in handpicked oloroso sherry seasoned casks from Jerez, Spain. Even better - it's cask strength - a style that's proving increasingly popular with both Macallan loyalists and new drinkers. As with fine wines, we'd recommend giving this whisky a good 15-30 minutes to breathe and open up to show its best. Try it straight, then with a few drops of water. 51.2% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [2018 Edition] More NAS, sadly, but a higher strength, which makes for some wee compensation. Hope this baby will be more satisfying than the pretty weak ‘Rare Cask’ that we tried a few weeks ago. Please note that this is a limited edition (90,000 bottles, right…) Colour: gold. Nose: some green and grassy sherry upfront, with quite some gunpowder and struck matches, and a certain rawness. Green walnuts, bitter oranges, a little fresh thuja wood, a touch of menthol, leaves, just a wee hint of rubber… It’s all a little rustic but I find this pleasant. Some parts remind me of the old 10 C/S, only with less roundness. With water: a little more sulphur, used matches, bitter leaves, raisins and really a lot of oak spices. Woodwork. Mouth (neat): a little heavy on the oak indeed (nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger that suggest European oak), then peppery and orange-y. Seville oranges, walnuts, more leaves, grape pips... Rustic again but not quite brutal. With water: nice, peppery, spicy, dry. Young oloroso, tobacco. It hasn’t got much of the old oranges and chocolate style left, though. Finish: medium, green, spicy, a tad bitter. Comments: a little rough, probably one for the hipflask.

Like many distilleries who made their names producing Sherry barrel matured whiskies, Macallan have accepted that the good old days when Sherry barrels were in such abundance are now well and truly over. Processes to produce Sherried whiskies today involve countless hours of preparation. Before filling, barrels must be seasoned with a lightly fermented wine to rid the harsh tannin in the wood.

In the circumstance of Macallan, the cask is then seasoned with Oloroso sherry from Spain for roughly two years. These barrels are rented by the distillery for the period. "They literally have us over a barrel," quips past master distiller at Macallan, David Robertson. Given the process, it’s easy to understand why Sherry Matured whisky prices have sky rocketed, perhaps none more so than Macallan. Distilled in 1996.

Traditionally one of the 'Grand Marques' of Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Macallan have been on a marketing revision that's lasted several decades. Most recently they announced a new range to replace their ''Fine Oak'' and ''Sherry Oak'' ranges - the "1824 Series" (in reference to the year the distillery was founded).

All the whiskies in the range are from ex-sherry casks - these include both European and American oak casks, of which there is a mix of first-fill and second-fill casks. These are of differing ages, with the 'average age' increasing as you progress through the series, with the darker colours said to be more representative of traditional Macallan.

Reportedly, "...part of the impetus for change comes from Macallan’s initiative to alleviate consumer confusion with regards to their Fine Oak and Sherry Oak ranges—but it is also a bold step intended to challenge some of the established norms that have developed in relation to age-statement whiskies".

Macallan's contention seems plausible to this point - afterall, anyone whose sampled whiskies of vastly divergent ages will have come across relatively young whiskies that belie their youth, as well as extremely old whiskies that have fallen out of balance after an excessive period in oak. Hence, age statements are exactly what they appear to be - but they're not a certificate of style or quality.

However, Macallan have implemented a more radical change - they've differentiated their new collection according to gradations of colour - Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby - rather than disclose age statements. (For what it's worth, to our eyes, the difference in colour between the Amber and the Gold editions is almost indiscernible). But more importantly, it's a given that while the colour of a wood matured spirit may be a very general indicator of age, a deep colour doesn't necessarily imply a great drink. Colour remains largely irrelevent to a spirit's quality.

The logical end to this approach is that Macallan seem to be asking consumers to swallow what is an over simplification at best - that certain colours in whisky will relate to certain flavours.

In short, marketing on colour alone rather than disclosing age statements is a questionable strategy that seems ultimately geared in the producer's favour, not the consumers. So far the blogosphere is alive with debate on the subject and has bestowed mixed reviews on the '1824 range. We'll endeavour to post tasting notes as soon as samples come our way.

The Ruby is designed to be the premium offering in the new range and is composed from 100% first fill Spanish oak ex-sherry casks.

Tasting note: Deep copper. Gingery openings are followed by cream, nougat, almond flan and hazelnut aromas countered by orange cake freshness and later peel-heavy marmalade. A medium to full bodied Macallan that offers flavours of spicy fruit cake, tea biscuits and delicate peel followed by hints of pepper and drying oak to finish. Not super long but easily the most polished and 'classically styled' of the lot. 43% Alc./Vol.

The "Fine Oak" label represents a completely new range of expressions which have been matured in carefully selected European and American oak casks which have previously held Sherry or Bourbon. As always with The Macallan, the colour is completely natural and is derived solely from the interaction of spirit and wood. Of the new selection, John Hansell of 'Malt Advocate Magazine' commented: 'The Fine Oak range is...more approachable, and has the potential to be embraced by a greater percentage of whisky drinkers....cutting back on the sherry reveals more of the Macallan spirit, which is first-class.' Distilled at the Macallan distillery in Speyside, this Single Malt is carefully matured for a minimum of 12 years. The unique combination of Bourbon and Sherry oak casks produces a particularly smooth, delicate and light whisky.

The high point in our collection of old and rare Macallans is this Anniversary Malt, drawn from three casks dated between 1926 and 1928 and bottled in 1983 (making it significantly older than 50 years). This is No.243 of 500 bottles produced. Diluted only by time, it is all-natural cask strength at 38.6% ABV.

It comes supplied in its original leather strapped wooden crate and complete with a personal letter of authenticity from the then chairman of Macallan, Allan G. Shiach which states that at the time of release, this was the oldest and rarest bottle that Macallan had offered; an extraordinary whisky, aged in one of the distillery’s finest casks for more than half a century.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to procure one of the most prestigious and hard-to-find Macallans ever.

Macallan's "1824 Collection" consists of four expressions – "Select Oak", "Whisky Maker’s Edition", "Estate Reserve" and "1824 Limited Release". They were created by Macallan’s own whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno, together with John Ramsay of Glenrothes fame (both distilleries are part of the same Edrington group).

Scheduled for duty free release only, and now largely sold out in Europe, this edition was aged in 5 different types of cask, including American oak seasoned with either sherry or bourbon, and first fill European oak sherry casks. 40% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Flawless clarity. An initial whiff of pickled onion blows off to reveal oatmeal biscuit and honey becoming more muesli-like in the second pass. Later inspection accents honey and vanilla over hints of dried fruit. Middle weighted and supple; mid palate features lovely biscuity/fruity malt (think spiced poached pear) plus a late dollop of honey sweetness. Mild pepper and struck match in the finish. Ends light, dry, finely tannic with hints of ginger bread and spice. 40% Alc./Vol.

This is a collector's opportunity to secure one of Speyside’s most iconic single malts from the heyday of this distillery: 18 year old Macallan in full-on sherried form. Purists should note - Macallan built its reputation during the early 1980s and ‘90s in large part by emphasising hard line traditional practises - 100% Sherry maturation and a predominant use of a special variety of barley called “Golden Promise”, now rarely used, but traditionally highly prized for its rich, nutty flavour. Macallan last used its original ratio of Golden Promise barley in 1993. The taste of ‘true’ Macallan may not be had for much longer at any price!

On offer is a 1985 vintage of the famous 18 year old. Some scuffing to the tin and minor lifting to the upper label.

Other reviews... Colour: amber. Nose: well, it’s one of these old Macallans that reek of Havana cigars – unlit of course. No sweet sherry here and no Christmas cake, we’re rather on old walnuts, vin jaune, manzanilla (and big time!), old leather jacket and then various precious woods and the polishes that come with them. Oh, and there IS a little wood smoke as well. In short, a wonderfully dry and almost leafy nose. After twenty minutes: the dried fruits come out, together with some mocha and motor oil. Same colours anyway ;-). Mouth: bang, everything comes at the same time, which is quite unusual with these old whiskies. Black raisins, coffee, old cognac (rancio), tobacco, a little tar, blackcurrant liqueur and, should I add of course, the trademark Seville oranges. Some heather honey as well but then it just wouldn’t change. It’s not really full bodied in fact and it’s even a little light by today’s standards, but what a glorious combination! Finish: not extremely long and all in keeping with the arrival, so it just never changes. Or when linearity is stunning. Having said that, it’s rather more on the orangey side in the aftertaste. Maybe more chocolate as well. Comments: you could still find this marvellous style in later batches, such as several 18yos that were distilled in the early 1970s. 43% Alc./Vol.

Created for the United States and parts of Asia, the "Exceptional Single Cask" series was launched in 2017, with all whiskies entirely matured in Sherry-seasoned casks filled between 1995 and 2004 and with age statements ranging from 12 to 22 years.

Distilled in 1995 and bottled in August 2017 after maturation in a European Oak Sherry hogshead, Exceptional cask No.6 was finally bottled at natural strength with an outturn of 281 bottles. The spectacular colour is as deep and dark as Sherry matured whiskies get. Expect a zesty, full bodied dram with aromas and flavours of fruit cake, sweet figs and strawberry jam followed by orange peel and Christmas cake.

The Macallan Cask Strength was introduced to the USA during 2002 to appeal to both current Macallan drinkers and lovers of cask strength whisky. Later, other markets including Japan were scheduled.
Macallan Distiller, Bob Dalgarno and his team of nosers laboured long and hard to select the right balance of first and second fill sherry oak casks from Spain that when combined created a Macallan of tremendous strength, power and complexity. Conscious that whisky at natural cask strength of almost 60% abv can be overly pungent Bob has managed to balance the obviously high alcohol with classic clove like spices and dried fruits.

We have one bottle only of this 100% Sherry matured edition to sell which is also non-chill filtered. Apparently destined for the Japanese market, a similar release with slightly lower ABV rated 94 points from Jim Murray. This one weighs in at 59% Alc./Vol. The deep ruby red colour is quite spectacular.

The equivalent of an old-school modern Macallan bottled at 43%. Very limited stocks.

It's often been said that every whisky lover's duty is to drink more sherry. To understand why is to grasp one of the economies fundamental to Scotch whisky production. Originally, the Scots relied solely on oak trees from the forests of England to create casks and mature their whiskies. But as their markets expanded, Scotland's distilleries needed to find an alternative oak source. As it happened, sherry was in abundance and highly fashionable with the English drinking public who consumed roughly 30% of the world's production. So sherry casks seemed a logical alternative for the Scots. Fast forward to current times and the opposite has occurred. Worldwide demand for Spanish Sherry has dramatically declined. This has turned the Scotch whisky industry on its head with fewer Sherry barrels becoming available.

What partly makes Spanish sherry barrels so special is the oak itself, Quercus Robur, with the Spanish trees cut down at 60 to 70 years of age. Research has shown that tannins in the wood act as a catalyst that aids oxidization during the maturation period hence being a highly desirable commodity in malt whisky production. The old Spanish timbers contain approximately ten times more tannin than the 30 to 40 year-old Quercus Alba, or American White Oak that's used to make barrels for the maturation of Bourbon whiskey. The deep colour and distinct rich, fruity / citrus peel flavours (sometimes marmalade-like) that ex-sherry casks can impart are more obvious reasons for their value and preference by the Scots.

The present day process for acquiring Sherry barrels into Scotland is unusual, a result of the fundamentals of supply and demand.  Sherry houses are commissioned to produce Sherry for the sole purpose of selling what they would consider a 'by-product' - essentially a first-fill barrel with a life expectancy of two fills. The process is as follows:
    1. Trees are purchased from Northern Spain allowing two years after felling and being left in the open for natural chemicals in the wood to interact and for the moisture content to drop.
    2. The wood is commissioned for cooperage by Whisky producers.
    3. Sherry (usually Oloroso) must then be 'leased' by the Whisky producer for a minimum of two years in order to season the barrel.

In comparison, the average price of filling a Bourbon cask is $50 compared to an astounding $300+ per fill for the sherry; also bear in mind that usual life expectancy for Bourbon barrels is three fills as opposed to two for Sherry. 'They literally have us over a barrel,' quips past master distiller at Macallan, David Robertson.

Enter again the Scots looking for a bargain!  For some time know, the Scots have been seeking alternatives to Sherry casks. Charles MacLean explains how American ex-bourbon casks came to dominate the present industry. In his book “Scotch Whisky, a Liquid History”, he describes how “In 1936, the cooper’s unions in the US broked a deal with [American] whisky makers which insisted that Bourbon must be filled into new oak, so there was suddenly a large surplus of cheap American barrels. These started to arrive into Scotland in 1946, either intact or broken down into ‘shooks’ of staves and reassembled into traditional Scotch (200L) hogsheads...The whisky industry thus kept pace with demand by embracing  changes in production methods which were compatible with efficiency and productivity.” Output increased exponentially (this in turn led to oversupply problems in the next decade).

100% Sherry cask matured whiskies are now rare. Unless whisky lovers take up drinking Sherry themselves, it’s not hard to envisage that in the near future, supply and demand will send prices skyward. Expect to be paying much, much more for these historical curios in the years to come - if you can find them at all.

As die-hard Sherry heads well know, 100% Sherry Matured Macallan is not officially imported into Australia anymore. These whiskies will never be available on a regular basis.  Our advice is to stock up!

Universally recognised as one of the world's greatest single malt scotch whiskies, The Macallan is consistently awarded top ratings by the world's leading spirit journalists. Described by Paul Pacult, the renowned international whisky writer, in his book Kindred Spirits as: 'simply the best 12 Year Old single malt around', its creation lies in defiant adherence to traditional methods and ingredients. The insistence on Oloroso Sherry casks from Spain remains one of the key factors in its desirability.

Tasting note: Bright copper penny colour. Peppery with dull suggestions of rubber in the first pass giving way to richer scents of dried fruits, hazelnuts, almonds, light marzipan, dark chocolate and more. The extra ABV ups the concentration to an unexpected degree delivering a spicy, mouthfilling profile including hazelnut, cocoa, oatmeal biscuit and pepper. Vanilla malt mingles with traces of cinnamon and sulphur into the finish. Long, complex and surprisingly robust.43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The initial aroma is sweetish, winey and oaky; aeration allows the aroma to expand to include marzipan, treacle, molasses, honey, vanilla bean, cinnamon and cocoa butter. The palate entry is sweet, creamy and assertive; at midpalate the flavor becomes intensely nutty, buttery and bacon fat-like, with the beginnings of rancio. Remains one of Speyside’s standard-bearer 12 year olds.  90-95 points.

This is the third 'Classic Cut' we've managed to secure, part of a limited annual series celebrating Macallan's ongoing commitment to "seek out the extraordinary."While the official distillery website has had these on offer, they obviously didn't produce huge volumes. It's absent from major UK retailer's websites but has popped up at auction where it's already selling for well over AU$200. Our suspicion is that it's being allocated to some markets, not others (cask strength Macallans have traditionally being US exclusives).

While the 2019 is a very recent expression, the Classic Cuts are true to 'traditional' Macallan form, being matured exclusively in handpicked oloroso sherry seasoned casks from Jerez, Spain. Even better - it's cask strength - a style that's proving increasingly popular with both Macallan loyalists and new drinkers. As with fine wines, we'd recommend giving this whisky a good 15-30 minutes to breathe and open up to show its best. Try it straight, then with a few drops of water. 52.9% Alc./Vol.

Macallan built its reputation during the early 1980s and ‘90s in large part by emphasising hard line traditional practises - 100% Sherry maturation and a predominant use of a special variety of barley called “Golden Promise”, now rarely used, but highly prized by distillers for its rich, nutty flavour. Macallan last employed its original ratio of Golden Promise barley in 1993, so increasingly rare bottlings prior to this period offer purity and awe in equal measure.
