Exclusive to the Travel Retail arena, Jura Turas-Mara takes its name from the Gaelic for “long journey.” It has been matured in an array of casks sourced from America, Spain, France, and Portugal. Initially, green apples on the nose, then sweet fruit notes—jelly babies—plus coconut and fudge. A little linseed in the background. Vanilla, peaches, mango, and lively spices on the palate. The finish dries, with aniseed balls, becoming slightly powdery. 85 points -www.maltadvocate.com, (Fall 2013) Reviewed by: Gavin Smith

The second addition to the Johnnie Walker Explorers' Club Series - "The Gold Route" was launched in 2013 as a Travel Retail exclusive.

Developed as a 'luxury' whisky, Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge describes this as an, “exotic mix of bananas, mango and pitaya,” with a taste of “pineapples, guava, passionfruit and raisins, all balanced perfectly by deep charred peaty notes in keeping with the signature smoky Johnnie Walker flavour”.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)

Easily the best deal in Islay Single Malt in Australia today.

Two hundred years ago, when the Scotts began moving whisky around the country in smaller barrels (aka quarter casks) they were improving more than methods of logistics. The smaller vessels made it easier for mules to carry and for the distillers to smuggle (what better way to inspire innovation than a ploy against the tax man!). In more recent times, with the rise of the micro distiller, smaller casks have played an important part by rapidly speeding-up the maturation process, increasing the whisky to oak contact ratio, in theory making it more palatable, at a faster rate.

For this release, after an initial period in American Oak x-bourbon barrels, the whisky was then transferred into new, specially produced Quarter Casks for a final seven-to eight-month period. It's also bottled at a higher ABV to keep inline with older traditions.

Tasting note: Bright gold colour. First passing reeks of choc fudge and vanilla laced peat. After aeration, the bouquet loses a little of its perfume and becomes more seaweedy and oceanic. A subtle peppermint note combines with a touch of bandaid - outstanding aromatic complexity. Soft slightly oily entry builds into a typically robust, mouthfilling Laphroaig experience as waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla are delivered with a creamy, warming mouthfeel and a gentle spirit tingle. Finishes refreshingly dry and long with cocoa, peat and subtle baked citrus notes lingering. Impressive. 48% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...  “Nose: Burning embers of peat in a crofter’s fireplace; sweet intense malt and lovely, refreshing citrus as well; Taste: mouthwatering, mouthfilling and mouth-astounding: the perfect weight of the smoke has no problems filling every crevice of the palate. , builds towards a sensationally sweet maltiness in the middle; Finish: really long and dries appropriately with smoke and spice. Classic Laphroaig. Balance: a great distillery back to its awesome, if a little sweet, self. Layer upon layer of sexed up peatiness. The previous bottling just needed an extra complexity on the nose for this to hit mega malt status. Now it has been achieved” 96 points - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2015

Laphroaig's recent focus on wood maturation follows the same trail pioneered by the likes of Glenmorangie. Quarter Cask, Triple Wood and PX Cask, which were all matured in bourbon casks, followed by a finish in quarter casks, and in the case of the last two, a further finish in sherry casks, each mark a departure from Laphroaig's traditional age statement releases. The new QA Cask is yet another, this time matured in ex-bourbon casks and then finished in virgin, uncharred American oak casks – hence the sub title, 'QA', being an abbreviation of 'Quercus Alba', the latin name for American oak. How long the finishing period was remains unstated, rather the term ‘double matured’ is adopted on the label. It could be months or years. This bottling is otherwise a Travel Retail exclusive. We have a small quantity on offer in a one litre format .

Tasting note: Bright gold. A soft, kippery, vanilla-malt infusion on the nose gains an iodine / elastoplast edge with vanilla later vying for centre stage. Light and relaxed by Laphroaig standards with delicate chilli pepper, soft smoke, kipper and drying vanilla malt closing the finish followed by an equally dry and surprisingly subdued aftertaste. Oak can both give and take away. In this case the outcome is a sedate alternative to the typically assertive distillery style. 40% alc./vol.

The full history of Laphroaig seems to be lost in the mists of time. It's clear that the Irish had been distilling on Islay for many years and that the locals picked up the skills when they left, but because it was illegal the small stills on the farms were rarely discussed - just a nod and a wink in the right direction! What is known, is that the family called the Johnstons started farming there around 1800, and that soon after messers Charles and Willie Doig were asked to do some 'work on a distillery' at Laphroaig. By 1815 Laphroaig's reputation had spread and the tax man was getting suspicious so they 'officially' established 'Johnston & Johnston' - the legend of Laphroaig had begun.

Laphroaig is a malt to either love or hate. Full of the smoke and iodine, seaweed character Islay has become famous for, it has spurred some commentators to describe it as 'mouthwash', 'hospital gauze' or at best, 'medicinal'. Suffice to say, this is not a whisky for the faint hearted. Take Laphroaig neat like a stalwart, or with a splash of soft water. Roll it around on your tongue, release the pungent earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's stream and either swallow or spit. The final judgment on Laphroaig must always be left to the individual. 40% alc./vol.

Other reviews...Golden amber color. Toffee, caramel, light smoke, and faint iodine aromas. A supple entry leads to a fruity sweet full-bodied palate with honey, salty, toasty nuts, smoky embers, and a brush of iodine on the finish. Straightforward and classically styled Islay malt.

Nose: Phenolic, seaweedy, with a hint of estery, melony, sweetness. Palate: Seaweedy, salty, oily. Finish: Round, dry, iodine-like. Comment: The most medicinal of Islay malts. I love it.  Rated: 8.5 /10

Nose: A thick coating of peat isn't enough to cover a soft, oaky background. Iodine appears alongside a pear-fruity sweetness. Delicate for a whisky so big. Palate: Continuous gentle waves of dry peat lap upon the tastebuds but are balanced by a sweet malt middle and the most hesitant of vanillas. Finish: Long and peaty, the shy vanilla now begins to show as the oak adds a certain dryness. Comment: A gentle giant. 92 points

"Unquestionably one of the great malts of the year...in spite of itself". - Jim Murray

Tasting note: Deep gold / brass. Muted at first; builds with a PX top note almost overwhelming the expected distillery aromas; if only momentarily. Brandy soaked raisins and dark chocolate amid flashes of sweet peat and pepper. Three to four minutes exposure draws out smouldering cedar, cigar box and hints of elastoplast, accenting fruit cake in later inspections. Terrific balance in the sweet, smokey-malt mid palate; vanilla and Christmas cake add richness to the finish. Concludes prolonged and lozenge-like with Laphroaig's trademark medicinal edge and pepperiness breaking through late, finally checked by the sherry. Big PX influence here but deftly handled - think of it as drunken Christmas pudding, Islay-style. 48% Alc./Vol.

Normally travel retail exclusive. Extremely limited stocks.

Other reviews... This ultra sweet wine is often paired with smokey malt, often with disastrous consequences. Here it has worked, but only because the PX has been controlled itself by absolutely outstanding oak. And the ability of the smoke to take on several roles and personas simultaneously. A quite beautiful whisky and unquestionably one of the great malts of the year...in spite of itself.

For many Loch Lomond lovers, 12 years is where this distillery hits its sweet spot. High praise from Jim Murray and a Platinum Medal at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition further affirm its status as one of the bargain buys in the Single Malt category. Brimming with peach, pear and vanilla sweetness and just a hint of peat, the majority consensus on the blogosphere also suggests this is great entry level malt. Aged in three cask types (Bourbon, refill and recharred) it also comes with a proper ABV and zero chill filtration. What more could you ask for?

Long in the finish, with spicy fruit notes. Drying, with subtle tannins. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith (Spring 2017)

Alongside Ardmore, Inchmoan is setting the standard for young, smokey Highlanders having received some glowing reviews, with an older release rated 95 points in Jim Murray's 2022 Whisky Bible. This one litre travel-retail edition comes with the added bonus of being bottled at 46% with zero chill filtration. If you don't already know, Loch Lomond produces a variety of spirits styles. Inchmoan is the peatiest, sometimes weighing in at a whopping 50ppm. The majority of the liquid comes from the Inchmurrin stills with the addition of some Loch Lomond pot still distillate for complexity - so Inchmoan is more a unique style of distillate as opposed to a seperate distillery with its own history.

"Finally, an unimpeachable counterpoint to the rally cry against no age statement whisky....Stunning."

Compared with other Diageo owned brands, Oban hasn’t been given much attention. With the recent success of NAS releases from several other distilleries (such as Talisker), it seems the marketing team now have their eyes on this West Highland gem. Surprisingly for some, the general consensus is that 'Little Bay' is as good as (or even better) than the ubiquitous 14 year old age statement!

Tasting note: Married in the smallest casks available at the distillery (200-litre ex-bourbon barrels) for extra richness. Bright amber. Borderline floral with a wonderful medley of ripe summer stone fruits (peach / nectarine / apricot) combined with beeswax and a whiff of maritime freshness. Air contact introduces notes of ginger snaps, muted white pepper and juicy malt. A peaches'n'cream delivery; Butter-textured with flavours of honey drizzled weet-bix, beeswax and pepper. Purring spices add depth and vibrancy. Finishes tangy, salted cracker-like with the fruity-malt thread seamlessly integrated through the final stages. A treat from a distillery that's been otherwise limited to just two bottlings. Sign us up for more! 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Finally, an unimpeachable counterpoint to the rally cry against no age statement whisky. Oban Little Bay is everything that Oban 14 is, and more. A rich, fruity, malty nose showcases dried apricot, dark chocolate, and salt. On the palate, Little Bay explodes with flavour, combining malt with orange, chocolate, and blackberry. Clove and oak spice join the party in the mid-palate, which shows superb balance and integration. A long, slightly dry, citrusy spice finish caps off a stunning whisky.
    92 points - Geoffrey Kleinman (Fall 2015), www.maltadvocate.com

A pleasant, refreshing simple dram. Clean and juicy in part and some wonderful oak-laden spice to stir things up a little. Just a little too much chewy toffee towards the end, though. 87.5 points 43% Alc./Vol.- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017

This new offering is made with whiskies “married in our smallest casks” to entice more fruitiness. The end result mixes vanilla and fresh apple aromas, though neither carries forward to the palate. Instead, flavors of resin and menthol dominate, though there's a pleasing peachy note on the dry, relatively hot finish. Adding water coaxes out a mellow vanilla note. 87 points - www.wineenthusiast.com

The unblemished purity is showcased by the richness of the bronze color; a very pretty malt. First nosings detect a smattering of marine saltiness that is almost smoky but eventually is more like salted caramel; secondary passes after more aeration discover sea breeze, sweet grain, malted milk, root beer, and oaky sawdust. Entry is succulent, ripe, fruity, candy shop-like in its toffee leaning; midpalate highlights the sweet maltiness that’s accented by a controlled saline aspect that carries the flavor profile deep into the roasted meat-like finish that flashes a touch of tomato paste. My favorite Oban right now. Highly Recommended - www.spiritjournal.com

Pulteney is named after Sir William Pulteney, who, at the dawn of the 19th century decided to build not a distillery, but an entire town and shipping port next to Wick. Presently owned by Inverhouse Distillers, the isolated Northern Highlander produces a distillate that is typically dry to semi-sweet in style, gently fruity with suggestions of sea air. This Bourbon matured expression was destined for the Duty free market. Distilled in 2006 and bottled at a decent ABV, it should be very indicative of the distillery style. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers.... AROMA: Elegant and energetic with an intense melting toffee sweetness and refreshing, spicy overtones. Creamy vanilla and oily lemon follow, finessed by a fragrant, fresh note of the sea air. TASTE: Firm and intense. Flavours of honey and crème brûlée are contrasted by crisp notes of citrus, coconut and green apples. The complexity builds on the palate and culminates in a spicy, fizzing finish of caramel and freshly ground spices.

A super value one-litre Pulteney, bottled relatively young but intended to clearly reflect the distillery character : Fresh, fruity and ever so slightly coastal. Honey, waxed apples and sweet cereals lead the nose before the palate comes on malty, fruity and waxy, creaming up as it goes. Straw bails, salt'n'pepper cracker biscuits and hints of dried mango add to the aftertaste, as does a briney freshness. Flavour-wise, this is not far off the 15 year old, being nicely honeyed, though perhaps not as well sustained. At the time of writing, it's also cheap. Elsewhere, expect to pay up to $125. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... AROMA: Warming and vibrant. Rich toffee and creamy vanilla sweetness with fragrant floral traces. Crisp green apples and a citrusy tang are backed by hints of banana and delicate oak spiciness. TASTE: Mellow spices and notes of ripe fruits drizzled in honey instil wonderful warmth, with a hint of sea air and touch of leather adding complexity to a lovely, lingering finish. 40% Alc./Vol.

Royal Brackla gets a re-vamp, packaging-wise at least. Stranger & Stranger have worked their magic to create an old world feel to what's been a relatively obscure malt. The heavy weight bottles also impress. Inside is a malt described as eminently quaffable, and now in a value one litre format!

Other reviews... Colour: light gold. Nose: malty. Roasted nuts, marzipan, a touch of ink and carbon paper (remember carbon paper?), and some bread and brioche. I find it relatively dry, which I always find pretty enjoyable. No extravagant nose for sure. Mouth: well, it works at 40%, we’re not experiencing any immediate nose-diving because of some weakness, although I would add it’s still rather light spirit. The registry is very malty again, with an oiliness, some nuts for sure, a touch of honey, more marzipan, Ovaltine, chocolate-coated orange zests, and perhaps a drop of olive oil. Always love that, ever tried chocolate made with olive oil? Fun stuff. Anyway… Finish: very medium, but pleasantly oily, and always very malty. Perhaps a little peanut butter. Oranges and almonds in the aftertaste. Comments: not really a surprise, but a good surprise. I had feared it would be as flat as a flounder. I could really quaff this… 84 points - whiskyfun.com

...As part of its program to make available single malts from all five of its Scotch whisky distilleries, Bacardi subsidiary John Dewar & Sons has now released a trio of bottlings from Royal Brackla, situated near Nairn in the Scottish Highlands. The 12, 16, and 21 year old expressions are initially available in ten markets, Including the UK, U.S., and Canada. The nose offers warm spices, walnuts, malt, peaches in cream, honey, vanilla, and a slightly herbal, earthy note. One of the softest, sweetest malts on the market.

Diageo's 'Distillers Editions' (aka 'DE's) hit the market around 15 years ago, and originally included the six "Classic Malts" (Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Lagavulin, Oban and Talisker). The range has expanded over the years to offer wood finished versions of Royal Lochangar, Caol Ila and Clynelish (the latter was reportedly dropped in 2012 - so collectors take note!)

These various finishes, usually involving sweet fortifieds (port, muscat, PX sherry etc), tend to soften each distillery's house character, edging some towards the 'dessert' end of the flavour spectrum. While they rarely achieve the highest ratings, across the board, they're interesting, accessible, food friendly whiskies that showcase the impact of each finishing type. The key to success is to avoid overwhelming the malt with secondary flavours, and some achieve this balancing act better than others. We've negotiated a special offer on the 2016 collection for you to explore.

Completely renewed in 1967, Royal Lochnagar today preserves its traditional, iconic character with an approach to whisky manufacture that is thoroughly hands-on and artisanal. Fermentation times are long, ensuring that every last morsel of character is extracted from the mash, and the distillery's short, stubby stills maximise the broad flavour spectrum. The distillery uses a mix of third-fill Sherry butts and third-fill American Oak hogsheads. The result is one of the fruitiest, richest malts on the market. Traditionally nearly all the malt production from Lochnagar was used in the famous VAT 69 blend. Today (thankfully) the majority is bottled as single malt.

This special direct import 1 litre bottling of the 'Distiller's Edition' has been finished in old Muscat casks.

Tasting note: Copper penny colour. Quite honeyed in the opening inhalations with later passes hinting at thickened cream, caramel nib chocolate and later, slightly drier notes of haystack and bitter cocoa. Middle weighted featuring sponge cake, honey and sweet spice flavours plus flashes of juicy grape at mid palate; the muscat input remains indiscernible until the very last rounding off one of the softest, sweetest malts on the market. Pair it with dried fruits and goats cheese. 40% Alc./Vol.

'The lava of the Cuillins' - that is how Talisker, the Golden Spirit of Skye was described by one poetic taster. This is indeed a turbulent Gaelic malt ; the only single malt from a spectacularly beautiful island of wild moorlands and dramatic mountain peaks known as the Cuillins. Built in Carbost in 1831 near 'Talisker House', the distillery has entertained such personalities as Boswell & Johnson. Another celebrity who enjoyed his Talisker was author, Robert Louis Stevenson, describing it in 1880 as 'king 'o' drinks'. Stevenson rightly recognised it as bearing similarities to both the Glenlivet and Islay malts. However, by taking 'the best of both worlds' so to speak, Talisker had achieved a new, unique style of whisky.

In 1892 Roderick Kemp, a part owner sold his share to establish the now immortal Macallan distillery, however, the distillery has continued strong since.

Tasting note: Rich amber gold colour with golden hue. Pungent-yet-fresh with Islay-like seaweedy, smokiness and sweet fruity maltiness. A great sniff. Bold maritime influence on the palate too, perfectly complemented by a spicy, very peppery, long lingering finish. A little honey threads its way through the beautifully balanced spirit - not harsh but warming. Fine, individual malt. Remains an island classic. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

A quite stupendous malt to be enjoyed at any time. But especially at night.

...Another that should need no introduction. The thing to look for in Talisker, as with all smoky whiskies, is sweetness that gives the requisite balance to the drying effect of smoke. Underneath Talisker’s smoke, which ain't as all-pervading as Lagavulin, is a sweet pear-like quality. When young there are notes of the land: heather, moor, sweet seaweed, and a finish that has a distinctive cracked black pepper hit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2012)

Nose: A razor-sharp spiciness lances through Demerara sweetness and rich peat. Absolutely magnificent. Palate: The enormous build up of spice adds to the multi-layered peat. The sweetness is almost like freshly crushed grist. Wave upon wave, layer upon layer of complexity. Finish: Massively warming and still spicy. The peat lingers while the spice bristles. Comment: A dram to be savoured and celebrated. Rating: 95  - www.whiskymag.com.

"...this is just brimming with vitality and purpose." - Jim Murray

There's 'Storm' and then there's 'Dark Storm': One is ubiquitous, the other frustratingly difficult to find yet generally considered the most desirable NAS expression from a distillery that excels in youth. Judging by the success of previous shipments, we know Dark Storm is a favourite of many who otherwise would have to be traveling internationally to buy it. The peatiest whisky Talisker produce, maturation in heavily charred casks imparts even more smoke and pepper to an already intense malt. The result is extreme yet balanced. We've managed to secure another parcel while maintaining the sharpest price possible. One litre duty free exclusive bottling. 45.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... some pretty chunky peat and spice is blown around the glass, certainly big enough to take the muscovado sugars head on...the sugars on the nose appear to multiply on delivery, as does the bourbon-style tannin-led liquorice and hickory...all is fresh and balanced enough to come good, even with some very late spices; much more like it! Unlike the storm which appeared to labour under some different American oak, this is just brimming with vitality and purpose. 92 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

...Dark Storm is exclusive to Travel Retail outlets, and maturation has taken place in deeply charred casks. Rich, fruity spices on the nose, quite citric, with brine and aromatic smoke. The smoke elbows its way to the fore in time. Full, sweet, fruity flavors on the palate, some vanilla, then smoke, licorice, and spice hit home. A classic Talisker smoke and chili finish, but cranked up a notch or two!

...Liked this baby when it first came out, although the 10 always reigned supreme in my book. Colour: gold. Nose: it does nose young, but not immature. It’s big Talisker, rather emphatic and even slightly ‘in your face’, with nice notes of fermenting leaves and fruits, dried kelp (more dried kelp than on an inaccessible beach), a very grassy/leafy smokiness, and not that many pencil shavings, while earliest version had more of that. Notes of bitter marmalade. Mouth: seriously, this is super good, if a tad cloying. They seem to have pushed the ashes and the drying parts, and lowered the fruits. Tends to become a little bitter, on Fernet Branca, various artichoke liqueurs, ginger, heavy cinnamon… The wood sure has a lot to say here. Finish: long, drying, very smoky and extremely spicy. Some oak in the aftertaste. Comments: a comedian that goes a little overboard, but it’s still one of my favourite young Taliskers. Like ‘Storm’ better, though – and of course the 10.  83 points - whiskyfun.com

Delve into the world of Sherry-finished single malt without breaking the bank.

First, there was the 'Sherry Cask Edition'. Now comes a variation focusing on Oloroso sherry maturation in a one litre format. Equal in quality to its sister release, this is another solid value that offers clear sherry input without being overdone. The classic notes of fruit cake, orange zest and sweet nuttiness are all here, sensitively dialled in to match the lighter volume of Tamnavulin's spirit. There is also a lovely peel tang to the finish, completed by whisps of cocoa and ginger biscuit. 40% but tastes like 43%. We preferred it straight, or with just a few ice cubes, but if you must add water, do so judiciously. There is a sweet spot to this whisky that errs on the less is more side. Find it and this gentle dram is a pure delight. Travel retail exclusive. One shipment at the current price.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Vivid amber gold. Nose: Moist fruit cake soaked in Oloroso sherry with hints of candied orange peel, marzipan, crushed almonds and ginger. Taste: Rich flavours of tarte tatin, pineapple and maple syrup followed by hints of thick treacle cake and orange marmalade. Finish: Rich and smooth - A signature Speyside malt.

One in a series of Tamnavulins for the Travel retail market with a wine matured theme. This one sees an initial period in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into Spanish ex-Tempranillo red wine casks. The finishing adds a pleasing tint of colour as well as contributing a berry-like notes. Bottled in a large format at 40%, the producers say to expect warm, sweet flavours of figs, maple syrup and toffee apple with notes of peaches, decadent chocolate ganache and a touch of coffee.

Other reviews... A little NAS finished in one the strongest red wines, what could go wrong? Remember, tempranillo is the varietal that's giving us the famous red Riojas. Colour: gold, not pink, and not even salmony/apricotty. Nose: as unusual as we were expecting, rather on peach and pear leaves, tomato leaves as well, then more earthy wood (barrel) and cassis, fruits and buds. Enters then more and more beer territories, which comes just as unexpected, but that would rather be Kriek and double-IPA. Mouth: a bizarre drop on the palate. Sour cherries, more Kriek, homemade mead, then wine gums and, well, a feeling of sangria. An acquired taste, shall we say. A little bitter/sour oak. Finish: short. Barrel water and more mead mixed with cherry juice. Comments: I'll never really manage to acquire this taste, I'm afraid. Please no red wine in my malt whisky (we'll have to make a T-shirt one day). 70 points - whiskyfun.com

The Macallan 1824 Collection Select Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Note: Due to the gloss clear coat print Macallan have used for the gift boxes there are signs of rubbing/scuffing to some parts of the gift box. Our current stock also has impact damage to the edges/corners.

Macallan's "1824 Collection" consists of four expressions – "Select Oak", "Whisky Maker’s Edition", "Estate Reserve" and "1824 Limited Release". They were created by Macallan’s own whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno, together with John Ramsay of Glenrothes fame (both distilleries are part of the same Edrington group).

Scheduled for duty free release only, and now largely sold out in Europe, this edition was aged in 5 different types of cask, including American oak seasoned with either sherry or bourbon, and first fill European oak sherry casks. 40% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Flawless clarity. An initial whiff of pickled onion blows off to reveal oatmeal biscuit and honey becoming more muesli-like in the second pass. Later inspection accents honey and vanilla over hints of dried fruit. Middle weighted and supple; mid palate features lovely biscuity/fruity malt (think spiced poached pear) plus a late dollop of honey sweetness. Mild pepper and struck match in the finish. Ends light, dry, finely tannic with hints of ginger bread and spice. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The producer notes "Testament to The Macallan's knowledge and mastery of wood, Select Oak uses three cask types - American Oak seasoned with either Sherry or Bourbon and first-fill European oak casks seasoned with Sherry. Investing more per cask than any other single malt, each Macallan cask has been handcrafted and selected under the supervision of The Macallan's Master of Wood, George Espie. This very special whisky has a high proportion of first fill Sherry Oak casks." The nose is fragrant and sweet, with marshmallows and new leather. Developing fresh fruits. The palate offers fruit and nuts, with increasing sherry, leather and spice. Medium length and drying in the nutty, slightly peppery, finish. 3 Stars - www.whisky-pages.com

...Straw gold. Well rounded, with fresh vanilla, berries in cream, caramel custard, toasted oak, and gentle dried spice. A really nice everyday, anytime dram. The best price/quality ratio of the range.

Brand new for Macallan (as of 2017) and replacing the 1824 range, is the “Quest” series, scheduled for Travel Retail only. Four expressions (Quest, Lumina, Terra and Enigma ) aim at highlighting a sensory journey that is Macallan’s "passionate and tireless quest for oak".

This is the first significant change to the stable in seven years. “For this character-led range, the liquids are phenomenal,” said Nick Savage, master distiller. “It’s succinct and coherent and we can tell the Macallan story through the casks we have used.”
The blogosphere seems to agree with near unanimous praise for the collection.

The entry level "Quest" combines four cask types, including European and American Sherry-seasoned oak, American ex-Bourbon and hogshead casks. Fans of younger whiskies in the Macallan’s Fine Oak range should find plenty to enjoy here with soft flavours of citrus, apple and sweet spices. 40% Alc./Vol.

"Some rather contrasting, complex flavours that strangely hang together rather well." - whiskymag.com

Casual quaffing wines have their equivalent in the whisky world. In America, they call them 'table whiskeys'. In Scotland, they turn out drams like this and bottle them up in litre formats, usually for Duty Free markets. Released in September 2016, Tomatin's 8 is the youngest in a collection of Travel Retail exclusives that includes the flagship 12 year, a 15 year and a rare 40. The combination of Bourbon & Sherry maturation promises a slightly sweet and fruity whisky suggesting apples, pears, ginger and cinnamon. At a very accessible 40%, think of it as a value everyday drinker to share with unexpected guests, or a base for blending your own 'house style'.

Nose: Quite an earthy nose for this dram. Think damp earth after the rain with some woody notes thrown in for good measure too. Palate: Quite a chewy mouth-feel, black pepper and liquorice mingle with some dark blackcurrant cassis, with some burnt toast flavours. Finish: Long, sweet, but also a little smoky on the finish. Comment: What to make of this oddball? Some rather contrasting, complex flavours that strangely hang together rather well. One to ponder and enjoy. 40% Alc./Vol. 88 points - Joe Bates, whiskymag.com

"Confirms Tomintoul's ability to dice with greatness." - Jim Murray

Tomintoul promotes itself as “The Gentle Dram,” which is appropriate for the house style. This one's aged fully in Bourbon casks, with no finishing. Gobstopper and subtle orchard fruit aromas are evident in the first pass, added freshness with fruity malt and vanilla emphasised in the second. The profile pretty much repeats on the palate: Fruity, gently spicy, semi-sweet, middle weighted, vibrant and ultra-pure as Tomintoul typically is. The finish is lipsmacking and dry, with grain-biscuit and light pepper in the fade. A better than average everyday pleasure. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Confirms Tomintoul's ability to dice with greatness. 94.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Light honey hue. Lovely, understated opening bouquet highlights the freshness of the malt in a gently sweet, almost honeyed way; aeration deepens the honey aspect and adds nuances of pine needle and sugar biscuits. Palate entry is honey sweet and amiable, then at midpalate the taste profile accelerates into a semi-rich honey, maple-like flavor that’s approachable and easy. Finish is long, moderately sweet and velvety. A solid introductory, medium-bodied, flowery/fruity Speyside malt. 85-89 points - winenthusiast.com

The "Gentle Dram," it says on the bottle’s label, and it certainly is one of the gentler whiskies in Speyside. It’s a fragrant whisky too with a firm malty foundation, fruit gum drops and caramel. Subtle notes of almond and anise helped keep my interest, as did its soft, subtle wood spice finish. Very easy to drink too! 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com (Fall 2004)

The all-Bourbon matured 'Tundra' seeks to highlight the creamy, soft mouthfeel that Tomintoul is famous for. It's named for the fact that the distillery is based in the Cairngorms National Park - one of the few places outside the Arctic that have tundra areas. That means sub-zero temperatures, as well as cold and windy winters, giving way to unique wild flowers and wildlife during the summer. 40% Alc./Vol.
