2015 Claxton's Warehouse No.8 Benrinnes 7 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 58.8%

Benrinnes is on the rise these days with indies bringing it to the attention of whisky lovers globally. That's justified by a typically high quality output, nowhere better demonstrated by young bottlings. In fact, it's doubtful a more youthful expression than this has ever been released. Tea biscuits, sponge cake and sweet malt are underscored by hints of apple pie and pineapple pudding. There's a pleasant tartness at the finish that adds authenticity and bite to the fruitiness. You can improve the balance with a splash of water, but unadulterated, this Benrinnes already boasts impressive body and a surprisingly creamy mouthfeel. Matured in a refill Oloroso Sherry octave. 58.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Apple cider. Pine. Cloves and winter spices. PALATE: Sweet oak with rich barley and candy flavours. FINISH: Barley sugar sweets with spiky oak in the aftertaste.

1996 Claxton's Warehouse No.1 Speyside Distillery 26 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 49.2%

Speyside distillery is located, unsurprisingly, in the Speyside region of Scotland. It's one of the newer distilleries but has already released a small range of official bottlings that include an 8 year old, 10 year old, 12 year old and a 15. Claxton's deliver a delicious, sulphur-free sherried expression with judicious wine input: Honey, caramel fudge and assorted dried fruits set a sweet tone on the nose, while the palate shows less ripe characteristics. The bottlers mention papaya - which is spot on; plus there's a little dried mango and elderflower following through. It's almost like a low peat Bowmore from decades back. As you might expect at this age, the balance at high ABV is excellent but there's also vibrancy to boot for a 26 year old. Sauternes barrique matured. 49.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Dried apricot and caramel. Sweet oak and vanilla. Herbal and musty. PALATE: Sweet oak and more dried fruits; papaya, apricot. Soft spiciness. FINISH: Oak-rich finish with fruit and tannin in equal measure.

2011 Claxton's Warehouse No.1 Arran "Peated" 10 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Isle of Arran, SCOTLAND
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56.3%

Arran takes a leaf out of Jura's playbook, producing a genuine pussycat: The peat feels like a delicate, translucent glaze over the barley, rather than an opaque layer but attains a harder line on the palate in an almost earthy, dry minerality that is rarely encountered in Scottish malts. The smoke mingles with bittersweet cocoa and dried grassy tones making for a fascinating, quasi-mezcal kind of experience. So soft and so unexpected. Islands, perhaps, but you'd never suspect it was from Arran. Bourbon barrel matured. 203 bottles. 56.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Heather honey (Mead). Rich vanilla. Herbal. PALATE: Mouth coating and moreish. Rich oak and honey. FINISH: Like a honey lozenge. Long, sweet oaky aftertaste.

2010 Claxton's Warehouse No.8 Tamnavulin 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    Reduced from $220.00
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.8%

Established in 1966 in response to the growing demand for malt whisky by blenders, Tamnavulin's market presence is quite recent. Owned by Whyte & Mackay, the distillery was pretty much closed from 1996 to 2007, so there are gaps in the inventory, which also explains why recent official bottlings have been NAS or vintage-dated releases. Independents are few and far between. This is another very tasty and spritely malt in the Claxton collection with a dry, chocolate-orange character from time in an oloroso octave. The aromas waver between vaguely citric, green wood notes to more defined raisin bread and dried fruits. The octave has significantly boosted the mouthfeel of what is generally a lightweight malt, finishing with cocoa, fruit cake and cinnamon spice. An affable sherried whisky that's on the sweeter side. 54.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Marzipan. Custard creams biscuits. Raisins in syrup. PALATE: Round and full. Sweet oak and syrup. Heavy Sherry notes. FINISH: Rich and warming. Waves of sweet oak and spice in the aftertaste.

    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.1%

Seldom found in sherry casks, this rare treat from Aberfeldy delivers an intense combination of malty-fruity flavours that suggest dark rum, Summer pudding and dry ginger ale. There is also a fantastic depth and spiciness not normally associated with this distillery. 50 bottles only! Refill oloroso sherry octave. 55.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Panettone. Brandy snaps. Ginger cake with icing sugar. PALATE: More ginger cake and brandy butter. Sweet oak and Sherry notes. FINISH: Long, oaky finish. Rich dessert flavours with ginger aftertaste.

    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen

If this was average malt, you could accuse Claxton's of taking advantage bottling at such an extraordinarily young age. It is slightly green on the nose, but no question it's Bunnah' from the first whiff. There is a signature purity that follows onto the palate: Cream tea biscuits, semi-ripe pears, a trace of brine and mineral, wrapped up in an oily/waxy succulence that reminds you of good Inchgower or perhaps Pulteney. Thankfully it's unpeated, and from a fresh Bourbon barrel - so you get a full showing. When your distillate is this good, the question of age statements almost seems irrelevant. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    2009 Claxton's Warehouse No.1 Ardmore 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - 60.3%
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $180. 00
    Bottle
    $2160.00 Dozen
    ABV: 60.3%

In terms of peat, one of the quieter Ardmores of recent tastings. Eminently drinkable, even for 'non smokers', the profile falls mainly in the rich, chocolatey spectrum. Gentle bitterness on the finish calls for water. Rounded and accessible. STR barrique matured. 60.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Toasted oak with a hint of Black Forest Gateau. Mild spiciness. PALATE: More peat than expected with a rich sweetness (oak, vanilla, syrup). FINISH: Sweet and syrupy with a slight peppery tingle in the aftertaste.

An old reliable in the smokey Highland category, only this one's a bit of a sleeper. At first taste, oddly light for a cask strength Ardmore, as if the octave has masked the usually effusive malt resulting in a whisky that's kind of smokey and kind of sherried, but ends up sitting on the fence. The effortless delivery and sheer drinkability make amends. Salt'n'pepper cracker biscuits adds a nice touch to the oily finish, too. Ideal pre-dinner dram. Just 69 bottles. 50.3% Alc.Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $170. 00
    Bottle
    $2040.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.1%

Ardmore from a brandy cask presents a fascinating proposition, although the cask in question seems to have had a reducing effect on the nose. Not so on the palate where Ardmore's sooty keynote is emphasised in an ample malt of considerable vitality. Peppers dapple the tongue. The sooty peat recedes through the cocoa-laced, tea biscuit finish. From a brandy quarter cask yielding 147 bottles. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from Claxton's... Nose: Sea-salty freshness at first. Butter biscuit with a sweet pepperiness. Palate: More peaty on the palate. Sweet ash and barbecue notes. Finish: Long, dry finish. Lots of salt and pepper and oak in the aftertaste.

Clynelish The Jazz Crescendo 10 Year Old (Special Release 2023) Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.5%

Clynelish chasers will be pleased to get their hands on the latest Special release, which reportedly delivers on those sought-after waxy notes - but water is needed to draw them out. 57.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Finely ground spice, honey, shortbread, vanilla sponge, and lightly toasted oak, with a muted hint of salted caramel on the nose. The palate offers juicy mandarin oranges, lime zest, and pepper. It develops a plump texture with flavors of sweet vanilla sponge cake, ground hazelnut, cinnamon, and caramel syrup over toasted waffles. This takes water beautifully, boosting the vanilla and adding sanded oak without turning down the spices. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Two of my favourite things in life, Clynelish and jazz, connected in a bottle of whisky! The label seems to show a young Sonny Rollins playing the trumpet in a rather 'Miles' stance (trumpet heavily pointing downwards), an unusual sight indeed but why not? One day I'll tell you about the time I almost had an argument with Dizzy Gillespie and Clark Terry at a Miles Davis concert at the Nice festival, but that's a story for another time… Yes, I know, I've already promised I'd tell it. Colour: pale gold. Nose: quite an unusual nose, initially on adhesives and varnishes, then on dough, cut grass, and apple peel. Water should awaken all this (in lieu of using a trumpet). With water: the proverbial wax, absent at cask strength, suddenly comes out of the woodwork, so to speak. It becomes both simple and beautiful at once. Old apples, beeswax, tangerine peel. Palate (neat): it's very tense, very lemony and on green apple, with a bit of cane sugar and quite a bit of green tea. Citrus liqueur but no wax so far. With water: water works miracles, here is a pure Clynelish, taut, without frills. Finish: long, fresh, and, you guessed it, on wax, citrus, and apple. Comments: water is mandatory here, without any this baby Clynelish remains hidden in its shell. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

    Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $350. 00
    Bottle
    $4200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.5%

Other reviews... White pepper and orange on a wave of high alcohol grow into a spicier proposition with allspice, apple, melon, Chinese pear, and mincemeat. Silky mouthfeel with candied orange, warm sherry notes, and pulsing spices, developing more of a waxy texture mid-palate, followed by a slightly bland ending of vanilla and star fruit. Water enhances the fruitiness, teasing out herbal notes and ground ginger. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...The cask-bill here gathered refill American oak, PX and oloroso. Hope this gumbo won't have  offset the Distillery character, but probably not, Diageo do care about Clynelish! What's sure is that it was a good idea to hire Syd Barrett's little nephew to do the names and stories… Colour: straw. Nose: it's pretty fascinating to have this one after the more elementary (in the best sense) TWS. Nutshell, the sherry has erased a part of the bright fruitiness and added some wine, walnuts and teas. English breakfast tea, naturally. With water: a little more fruitiness but walnut skins and other fruit peelings, and even eucalyptus tea tend to dominate. But the paraffin and beeswax are there, hurray. Mouth (neat): the fruits and rather a lot of paraffin are having the upper hand this time. Once more, a little bitter oak coating that, even chlorophyl. With water: very good, if a little cask-heavy indeed. A notch harsh, perhaps, otherwise oranges and a little honey are adding some needed lightness, although this isn't fruity whisky by any means. Finish: rather long, but the oaks and their spices are at the helm. Some raisins from the PX (I would suppose) in the aftertaste, plus a faint saltiness. Comments: super-good, it's just that I shouldn't have had the rather pristine young 2011 just before this one. My bad. 84 points - whiskyfun.com

600 bottles make up a slightly larger outturn than is typical for Cooper's Choice in an unusual Oloroso sherry-finished single grain from Girvan. ABV: 49.5%

Strathclyde is not too far from Glasgow and was originally built to produce gin, but has since become an important producer of wheat-based grain whisky for large volume Scotch blends. Owned by Pernod Ricard, it's safe to assume a majority finds its way into Chivas Regal products. This single cask example has spent its entire 28 years in an ex-first fill Bourbon barrel yielding 198 bottles. It sounds old for a whisky, but many grains at this age are still too young and disjointed. Having said that, we tasted a 26 year old Cooper's Choice several years ago (of the same or similar liquid) and it was solid. Anticipate another notable selection here. 49.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50.6%

This coastal Speysider is known for its important contribution to Daigeo's blended whisky brands. The team at Lady of the Glen have given it a lengthy two year secondary maturation in Oloroso hogsheads from Hidalgo cooperage in Spain. The result offers a strong influence from the sherry more than the wood including flavours of salted oatmeal biscuits, orange chocolates and cocoa. The finish is lengthened by a flurry of pepper and pipe tobacco before more bitter dark chocolate comes through. Spicy by Inchgower standards, a few drops of water broadens the mouthfeel and accents the richness of the malt. Drawn from two hogsheads yielding 641 bottles at 50.6% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... Dried fruits, créme caramel, star anise, stroopwafels and chocolate orange.

Other reviews... Easy drinking sherried Inchgower. Balanced. Lots of caramel and toffee, with gentle spice and orange peels. - whiskybase.com

A textbook young Speysider that’s undeniably tasty. You could drink this anytime. 50.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 550 bottles.

It seems that independent bottlings of Glenrothes arrive almost as infrequently as Macallan. Both are owned by corporate giant, Edrington who are instigating some significant changes at the distillery. An upgrade is scheduled in the coming years, and the marketing emphasis has already taken a dramatic shift towards 'ultra premium' bottlings. The ten and twelve-year-olds as well as the Whisky Maker's Cut are all discontinued with the range now starting at 18 years. Cask strength age statements like this are going to become a rarity indeed. Opportunity knocks! Octave oloroso cask finished.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Caramelised nuts, chocolate chip cookie, dates, raisins, and a hint of mature oak. Taste: Molasses with yet more chocolatey notes and chewy dried fruit, with cinnamon and ginger developing. Finish: Red wine richness, and a hint of earthy malt.

A Benriach distilled towards the tail end of Billy Walker’s time at the helm. Brown Forman have since taken over and Rachel Barrie has crafted a more moderate but well-curated selection. The style is fruity, medium to full-bodied and in this case, initially matured in ex-bourbon wood then given a stopover inside a small Moscatel cask. Similar examples we've tasted tend to acquire an exotic fruit quality from these casks, so expect something a little unusual. 56.8% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose there are aromas of vanilla wafers, raspberry, red licorice and peppermint. The flavours are fresh on the palate, with eucalyptus and menthol. This becomes syrupy, with melted chocolate and brazil nuts. The finish has a lasting freshness, with cocoa, peppermint and spice.

1964 Douglas Laing & Co. XOP Xtra Old Particular Dumbarton 55 Year Old Single Cask Limited Release Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    Reduced from $3,999.00
    $2499. 00
    Bottle
    $29988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 44.6%

Beyond investment grade - now more a museum piece, and deserving of a place in any serious whisky collection.

From the long closed Dumbarton plant, this is all the more unusual for its extraordinary age. Grandfather Dumbartons are frequently off the charts when it comes to ratings in the single grain category. This is definitely one of the oldest, if not the oldest ever bottled upping the ante on a 1975 Gordon & Macphail 45 YO released earlier in 2022. Beautifully presented in a heavyweight bottle housed in a wooden box, Douglas Laing are offering 215 bottles to the world, drawn from one refill hogshead at natural strength with no chill filtration. Anticipate aromas and flavours of Scottish honey, maple syrup, candied apples, ginger, nutmeg and milk chocolate with a lengthy poached pear, pistachio and marmalade finish. Extremely limited stocks. 44.6% Alc./Vol.

Also known as 'Inverleven', Dumbarton was built in 1938, just south of the Highland border near Glasgow and for a while was the largest operation of its kind. Classified as a lowlander by Michael Jackson, production was predominantly set aside for the Ballantine's blends. When bottled by Indies, Dumbarton is typically the label for grain whisky. Inverleven the single malt, but it's not a rule. Nowadays stocks are "undeniably rare". The notable feature of the plant was its American-style stainless steel columns (rather than the traditional Coffey stills). A focus on maize, meant its spirit was rather heavy in character. In 1956 a third Lomond still was added with an attached rectification column designed to produce different styles of spirit. The distillery was decommissioned in 1985, though its column still was salvaged by Bruichladdich to produce its now famous 'Botanist gin'.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Expect immediately oceanic, West Coast of Scotland character, with enticing yet subtle phenols coming through. Palate: The palate reveals leather, malted barley, spices and a honey-glazed smoked meat quality. Finish: The finish is exceptional, with more peat smoke, dried citric fruits and oak bonfire embers.

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Specifically, there is some wear to the bottle's neck sticker and minor cellar bloom on the certificate of authenticity contained inside the box. Actual product pictured.

Distilled one year before Port Ellen closed and bottled in January 2008. There's a cask from the Laings of the same age and vintage rated 90 points by whiskyfun.com, so expect the quality to be high again. We have one only from the original outturn of 300 bottles at natural strength. 57.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Notes from the bottlers... On the nose it is literally a breath of sea air, with a hint of Caledonian MacBrayne's ferry as a back drop, plus distinct heathery peat heading to a sweet and smokey oakiness. Initially dry, ashy and salty on the palate, this moves through a gristy sweet barley phase to something more creosoted at its tail - and this runs really long at the finish which is tarry too, moving late onto a dry, spiced, ashy (again) style.

    ABV: 56.6%

Highland glory in a bottle! Distilled one year after Edradour was bought out by Andrew Symington, this version, which has reached maturity, should be magnificent in both concentration and mouthfeel. Rested in first-fill sherry cask #926 for seventeen years before decanting on the 25th of August 2021, 674 bottles are on offer globally. We have secured a small allocation. Overseas demand for gems like this suggests they are heading into collector territory. 56.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Once more The Edradour proves that it can provide beautifully composed, well-aged, sherry-driven but not overly-sherry profile whisky. This release is mature, round, mellow, interesting, well-balanced, and multi-layered, and the only thing it lacks is more nuances/depths. It remains as such as an example of a classic, sherry-matured highland whisky with no flaws. - whiskybase.com

    ABV: 60.1%

The big smoke'n'sherry theme continues with No.201, another oloroso cask, this time yielding 893 bottles at 60.1% Alc./Vol. We have less of this than any other Ballechin right now. Judging by a blogger's post on whiskybase.com below, the quality is very high, but you will need patience for the sherry to fully shine, otherwise, it's "...a standout".

Other reviews... First impressions were only of peat and smoky pork. It took quite a while to get beyond that wall of scent, but behind it, there was earthy tea and a floral tartness. Over time the pork cure got sweeter and sweeter. That was a theme accross the board: the sweetness being initially very shy and peripheral and increasing in confidence and complexity. The palate started off on the short side, with only the honeyed peat briefly showing before salty spice and the transition to the finish. Still, it was enjoyable with a dense thickness, heft and dark malted breadiness. When it opened up, it was was like it recieved an upgrade patch. Right after the honey peat, it then Introduced stewed, dark fruit and chocolate that behaved like it has been there the whole time, nonchalantly becoming the bulk of the midsection. The finish wasn't altered so much, being mostly fully formed from the get go. The black currants from earlier were the major change to it, as it brought more sweetness to the slow burn of various pepper-corns. A perfect excuse to get acquainted with Springbank's nearest neighbour.

West Highlanders produce many of Scotland's most charismatic malts, led by Oban and Ben Nevis and joined by the Campbeltown community further south west. Springbank is legendary, but there's another Campbeltowner on the rise: Glen Scotia. One of the country's smallest distilleries, the core range is the realm of supermarkets in Australia (though the quality is generally good). That leaves others to source the 'proper stuff'. In this exclusive bottling, you get the chance to try Glen Scotia in all of its unpeated glory: Young and feisty, but already distinctive and most importantly, uncut.

Cask No.19/660-2 was a first-fill Tawny Port hogshead, which has no doubt contributed to the whisky's auburn / polished mahogany colour. In the absence of peat, Glen Scotia's profile can fall somewhere between nutty and fruity. Here, both aspects vie for your attention. The aroma opens peppery, then nutty and gingery with a twang of sulphur and sea breeze lending a coastal edge. 4-5 minutes releases sweeter scents of spiced pears and cinnamon apples over earthier, root vegetable-like notes. The palate is intense and long, unfolding with ginger snaps, spiced apple and salted dark chocolate in a tactile, even slightly 'gritty' delivery. That light sulphur note returns, but adds complexity rather than detracting (those with the 'sulphur gene' will find some satisfaction here). Throat lozenges - think Fisherman's Friends - round off a powerful, heartwarming finish. There's little trace of the port cask, instead what's highlighted is yet another fascinating West Highland make. If you're sulphur sensitive, add water. Those notes dissipate and the profile harmonises in a contrasting and beautiful way.

With just over a kilometre between them, speculation as to whether Glen Scotia will be the next Springbank is inevitable. Given the distillery's versatility and quality of output, the potential is there, but it probably won't balloon anytime soon (then again, just a few years ago many seasoned whisky lovers were oblivious to Springbank...) Place your bets. Right now, here's a perfect excuse to get better acquainted with Glen Scotia. 313 bottles for Australia only. 53.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

94.5 points from Jim Murray and awarded the World's Best No Age Statement Whisky for 2022.

The winners are in from the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Over two weeks, seventy judges from around the world evaluated over 5000 spirits with around seventy Scotch whiskies scoring Double Gold. Thirteen whiskies advanced to the various “sweeps” elimination rounds. One of them was this. It's not the first time significant praise has been lavished on Glen Scotia's 'Victoriana'. The cask strength limited release also captured the judge's attention at the 2017 World Whisky Awards, describing it as "An incredible whisky, packed with complexity." Finished in 'deep charred oak', the latest batch has arrived with a further endorsement from Jim Murray. We have just secured a small volume for Glen Scotia chasers in Australia. Created in the vein of Scotch whisky during the mid-to-late 19th century – the reign of Queen Victoria, hence the name - Victoriana is initially matured in ex-bourbon casks, after which 30% sees a secondary spell in first-fill Pedro Ximénez (sweet) Sherry casks and 70% is finished in new heavily charred American oak. The new batch weighs in at 54.2% and is non chill filtered for maximum mouthfeel. Going by our tasting of an earlier release, this should be nothing short of a flavour extravaganza.

Other reviews... n23.5 this has come out as gung-ho crushed hazelnut and barley. The subtlest hint of smoke makes you do a nasal double-take: is it there or not? It is...; t24 a fizzing display of ultra-lively, salivating tannins - a malt revelling in some sublime American oak. And if that isn't juicy enough, the barley pitches in to up the salivation score even further; f23 an elegant climb down. Drier, a little spice but some sexy cocoa notes moving towards praline; b24 as cheerfully bright and breezy a malt as you are likely to find and one bursting with deceptive complexity. If this is trying to depict your average bottle of whisky from Victorian Campbeltown, then it has failed miserably: it was never this good...! 54.2% Alc./Vol. 94.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2022

[51.5% batch tasted] Gleaming polished copper appearance. Momentarily off-key followed by sultry aromas of toasted fruit-bread, pineapple pudding and deep vanillas. Five minutes exposure emphasises dark chocolate and roasted nuts amid flashes of sappy oak and trace sulphur. Exceptional balance. Full bodied yet perfectly rounded. Mid palate is toffee-dense, malt-rich becoming tantalizingly oily / buttery towards the finish. Honey oatmeal, vanilla fudge and resiny oak to close with a wound up, mouth coating stewed fruit / vanilla / creme-caramel and pepper finale. Ends medium long with the honeyed-fruitiness lingering. One for the end of the night. Non chill filtered. 95 points

[51.5% batch tasted] ...The most expensive of Glen Scotia’s new trio has been finished in deeply-charred barrels and bottled non-chill filtered at cask strength. Soft and sweet on the nose, with peaches, fudge, and a hint of oak. Full-bodied and slightly oily on the palate, with wood spices, vanilla, and blackberries. Smoky ginger and lively char in the lengthy finish. 87 points - Gavin Smith (Fall 2015), whiskyadvocate.com

Double Gold - San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017

Best Campbeltown Single Malt at the World Whisky Awards 2017.

After a period of closure in the mid 1980s Glen Scotia reopened towards the end of that decade. The distillery has always offered two styles of whisky - peated and non peated. Typically the latter is produced for about six weeks annually. Since 1999 it was distilling for only a few weeks of the year, thanks to the team at Springbank. Activity has been stepped up since 2007 with Malt Master, John Paterson at the helm. Right now, here's another perfect excuse to get better acquainted with Glen Scotia.

The Glenallachie batches continue to roll out. Using various proportions of sherry and bourbon barrels in the mix, Batch 9 promises a typically effusive malt, described as bursting with aromas of mocha, heather honey, sweet raisins and dried red berries while the palate features lashings of cinnamon spice, molasses and honeycomb followed by ginger and dark chocolate on the finish. 58.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered and natural colour.

The tenner is the only cask strength expression in Glenallachie's core range, usually aged in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and oloroso puncheons with a small amount of virgin oak and other casks thrown in for good measure. These editions are known for being surprisingly approachable uncut, offering up a well-balanced blend of sweet dark fruit, rich malt, baking spice and chocolate flavours coalescing into a remarkably gentle finish. It's Speyside at its most hedonistic. 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

"A bit more for the oloroso lovers. Another exceptional Cask Strength release from GlenDronach." - drinkhacker.com

Other reviews... Batch 12 of GlenDronach’s Cask Strength is about to hit the shelves, but before we get to that review, let’s back up a bit. Since Chris was so impressed with Batch 11, I decided to shell out some of my hard-earned Drinkhacker cash on a bottle of Batch 10 (yes, we actually pay for bottles sometimes). Batch 10 clocked in at a slightly lower barrel strength, but otherwise it is the same marriage of single malts aged in oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and carrying no age statement. Let’s see how it compares, shall we? There’s definitely a theme to these whiskies, and it’s sherry. Beautiful, deep sherry. Still, this tenth batch of GlenDronach Cask Strength is a bit more austere on the nose than its successor, suggesting a heavier hand from the drier oloroso. The aroma doesn’t jump from the glass like its future self, but with a little extra time to arrive, elegant and airy notes of currants, dark raisin, and cocoa powder grace the stage. The palate, however, is just as impressive and decadently rich, if not more so. Chris reveled in the “almost pruny glory” of Batch 11, and while Batch 10 presents a similarly lush, deep sweetness, there’s a brighter, more complex fruit dimension here also that flexes with orange peel, dark cherry, and poached pears alongside a secondary layer of sherry-inspired dark berries. It’s similarly exotic with spice from both the cabinet and more far-flung locales, but it’s also a bit gentler with an even, hugging warmth. The finish is wonderfully long and simmering with oak, date chutney, candied almonds, and Christmas cake. Batch 11 may have been tailored more to the PX fans, but Batch 10 is a bit more for the oloroso lovers. Another exceptional Cask Strength release from GlenDronach. - drinkhacker.com

Notes from the producers... NOSE: Mocha, apricot and baked orange chocolate cake, with roasted almond, walnut and raisin on a base of aromatic toasted oak. PALATE: Richly spiced fruitcake with nectarine, dark cherry and honeyed sultana. CONCLUSION: Lingering ripe apricot layered with ginger jam and indulgent caramelised date.

A whisky that continues to be on strict allocation and getting harder to source every year. 1,487 bottles of this sherried Speysider were released to the public with Australia allocated a fraction of that. Personally selected by Master Blender, Rachel Barrie, from some of the most extraordinary and remarkable Spanish oak sherry casks from 1990, 1992 and 1993, it promises a typically super-complex and full-bodied whisky for which the distillery has become famous. Presented in a handsome wooden case. Expect an utterly luxurious sensory experience.

Notes from Glendronach... NOSE: A carefully woven tapestry of stone fruit, baked quince and glazed cherries on a seductive bed of sandalwood, roast chestnuts and subtle musk- scented leather. The freshness of oak balsam lifts and lengthens throughout, sustaining the exceptional balance and complexity. PALATE: An elegant, deep and perfectly integrated palate combines a myriad of sherry cask tastes in each sip; an initial burst of rich sherry-laced fruitcake intriguingly opens up to reveal baked orange, sultana and luscious black cherries. CONCLUSION: As time slowly passes, the taste lengthens and deepens towards an elegant dark chocolate mint, raisin and angelica root velvet finish. 48.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Just launched in Australia is the new Batch 11. Across the board, it's impossible to ignore the striking sienna brown colour of these whiskies, each promising a flavour extravaganza for Sherry-heads. Unfortunately, colour and distillery notes are all we have to go on. There are no samples (the miniscule allocation doesn't justify it) and at the time of writing, it seems reviews of these whiskies are non-existent (despite the official UK launch being in January this year.) Six months later almost no one has caved in to opening a bottle - a fact not only indicative of a growing industry trend but symptomatic that "collecting mania" has set in at Glendronach. If for you, Batch 11 is just another opportunity to 'diversify a portfolio', this is at least one annual release where speculation (arguably) presents less risk than other offers of its kind. After all, it is the collection that routinely dazzles spirits writers. Jim Murray commented of last year's, "...when this distillery gets it right, your taste buds don't stand a chance. Almost brain-explodingly complex". At the very worst you're going to be stranded with a great bottle of whisky.

Ranging from 43 to 18 years old, there is once again, huge and intriguing variety across the nine expressions in Batch 11, six of which were matured in Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheons, two in Oloroso Sherry Butts and one in an Oloroso Sherry Puncheon. All nine single casks have been hand-selected by BenRiach’s Managing Director and Master Distiller Billy Walker who comments:

“I believe Batch 11 makes a very simple point - the wood has a huge influence on the spirit. You immediately sense - and taste - the influence of the casks on these nine sublime single malts.... In these nine expressions you feel the pulse of our inventory at GlenDronach and the idiosyncratic personality of the casks coming through. That, plus the passion and craftsmanship of our people, is what produces these incredible whiskies time and time again.”

Walker adds that batch Eleven has a number of highlights:
The oldest, 1971 cask number 2920, at 48.6% vol, is a monster 43 year old malt matured in a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon. Intense treacle toffee floods over sour plums and roasted coffee. Harmonising waves of leather and tobacco give great depth and are balanced perfectly by a subtle toasted walnut and date back note. As a contrast, the 18 year old from cask number 244, at 56.9% vol, is the youngest, distilled in February 1996. Matured in a fine Oloroso Sherry Butt, there is a tremendous balance of mixed candied peel and stewed dark fruits sprinkled with dark Demerara. Delicious waves of toffee, cracked barley and warm oak spices combine to give a long and elegant finish.

Just like last year's collection, all the whiskies are in exceedingly short supply. Whether for drinking or investment, buying early will maximise your PFM (pleasure for money ratio).

Distilled in 1971, cask 2920 is a Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon. Bottled November 2014, this 43 Years Old is at a natural strength of 48.6% Alc./Vol. Only 523 bottles produced.

While many distilleries offer single casks, allowing an opportunity to taste a more distinctive and 'natural' version of an otherwise familiar spirit, Glenfarclas’ Family Casks go one step further: If your wallet permits, you can pick across vintages spanning five decades. At the time of writing, the Grant family has offered hundreds of vintage malts from the early 1950s up to 2014. No one year is quite like the next, and cask aging varies from release to release. You never quite know what you’re going to get. Our latest shipment concentrates on sherry matured malts, which, in our opinion, traditionally work best with the distillery's heavy, pungent and fruity new-make. Direct-fired stills contribute further character, while traditional dunnage warehouses keep a constant temperature so the whiskies are geared towards long, slow maturation. That doesn't mean these selections don't sometimes peak relatively young. Expect the unexpected!

Direct-fired stills contribute further character, while traditional dunnage warehouses keep a constant temperature so the whiskies are geared towards long, slow maturation. That doesn't mean these selections don't sometimes peak relatively young. Expect the unexpected!

Cask Strength Whisky: Pros & Cons.

Cask Strength whiskies are bottled undiluted at the whisky's natural strength. As whisky matures the proof reduces from around 70% Alc./Vol. following distillation to 50-60% after 15 years or so of maturation in barrel. This is because alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature than water. In short, natural strength equates to a more fundamental whisky experience, almost as if your tasting from casks still maturing in a distillery's dunnage house.

Pros: Given the above, the increasing popularity of cask strength single malts comes as no surprise. Such whiskies also provide an opportunity to dilute to your preferred strength rather than the bottler's. What'smore, they typically have minimal or zero filtration which tends to retain more flavour and texture.

Cons: One has to take the good with the bad. Extreme alcohol can be prickly, and can even anaesthetise the mouth resulting in a less pleasurable experience. A high tax/alcohol ratio also means such spirits can be excessively pricey.

The Holy Grail of Malt Whisky

If there was a holy grail of malt, then for many it would be the discovery of affordable cask strength whisky that's also achieved balance - to the degree that you can enjoy it undiluted. Look for examples from Glenfarcas, Glenlivet and Springbank, as well as many independent bottlings, especially those from Adelphi or Douglas Laing.
