Writers Tears Marsala Cask Finish Blended Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Writer's Tears released this sweet wine finished whiskey in early 2019. Bernard Walsh, Founder and Managing Director of Walsh Whiskey explained, “The sweet Marsala effect was very well received when we treated some of The Irishman range to it two years ago so we wanted to afford Writers’ Tears – Copper Pot enthusiasts the same opportunity." The natural sweetness has been balanced out with a 5% stronger alcohol content. Just under 2500 bottles were filled after twelve months finishing in hogsheads. Four of the five casks were allocated to Australian whiskey lovers. We have a small allocation. Expect rich aromas of golden syrup and orchard fruits and lingering flavours of caramelised apple, nutty spices and wildflower honey. 45% Alc./Vol.

Writers Tears Double Oak Blended Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $109. 99
    Bottle
    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
A blend of the two premium whiskey styles (Irish Single Malt and Single Pot Still) aged in two types of wood – American and French Oak. It's the result of a collaboration between the Walsh family in Ireland’s County Carlow and the Legaret family in Cognac, France. While American oak is now commonplace in whisky maturation, the use of French oak was widespread through the 17th and 18th centuries. This changed in the 19th century when the phylloxera blight of the 1860s hit French vineyards and the availability of old French oak wine casks dried up. More recently, affordable American oak (x Bourbon casks), combined by the surge in exports of Irish whiskey gave rise to a ménage of both French & American oak barrels being used. The combination gives a new twist to the whiskey's flavour profile.

Other reviews... This blend of single malt and pot still whiskeys exhibits the incredible synergy between chocolate, cinnamon, and pot still spices. Vinous at times from partial cognac-cask maturation, this has aromas of dark berry fruit, cinnamon, fudge, milk chocolate, malt biscuits, jellied fruit, and a smudge of dry spices. Compelling, well-structured whiskey, with cinnamon, chocolate, dark toffee, pepper, and ginger. It’s never cloying, nor overly sweet, just a richly rewarding glass.

Yellow Spot 12 Year Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    Dublin, IRELAND
    $159. 99
    Bottle
    $1919.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Those familiar with Mitchell & Son's superb 'Green Spot' Irish Whiskey will be happy to know about the return of 'Yellow Spot'. The unusual naming convention has a basis in reality. The different colours refer to the practice of marking casks with a specific colour after determining the ageing potential of a whiskey: Blue spot was an 8 year old, Green Spot a 10 year old, Yellow Spot a 12 and Red spot a 15.

Mitchells would buy casks of port, sherry and Malaga out of the Iberian peninsula to sell on the local markets. They would fill them up with whiskey from the neighbouring Jameson distillery as soon as they were depleted from their original nectars. In keeping with this tradition, Mitchells reintroduced Yellow Spot, a brand that disappeared in the early 1960s. It has a 12 year maturation and a cooperage mix of ex Bourbon, Spanish sherry and Spanish Malaga casks. It's enough for only 500 cases of the resulting whiskey, and there's no plans to increase production as far as we're informed.

The distinctive feature of Yellow Spot resides in the use of the Malaga casks: Think Jameson 12 with the heady scent of Moscatel and the sweetness of Pedro Ximenez grapes. It's a combination that makes for a rich Irish experience. As you'd expect, our allocation of Yellow Spot is miniscule so if you're keen to try it, don't delay.

Tasting note: Bright gold / brass appearance. Gorgeous aromatics with notes of wild honey, custard, creme caramel and almond flan. Given a little time sees some lovely fruits emerge, namely apple peel / pear. Entry is oily / buttery in turn as the spices develop in a double wave. Flavours of vanilla custard tart feature enlivened by soft spices. Outstanding length and balance concluding with impressive persistence. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... It works like this: triple distilled single pot still whiskey matured in bourbon, sherry, and Malaga casks, which produce a complex drink with aromas of red fruits, spice, nutmeg-dusted custard tarts, blossom honey, dried raspberry, clotted cream, cracked black pepper, and sweet flowering jasmine. The sweetness and nutmeg flavors are swallowed up by an overwhelming force of clove, with a finish of bitter nut oils and burnt toast. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2018

I found the first version at 40% absolutely excellent (WF 87) so I have deep hopes… Colour: gold. Nose: pure honey and fruit liqueurs. Imagine all the fruit liqueurs you know about, blend them ‘mentally’, add some honey and some vanilla cream and there, you have it. With water: I really like these notes of earth and even the minerality that comes out, all those are clear and obvious plusses. Mouth (neat): sure it’s bigger than the lighter version (bravo, Serge!) but it’s also more citrusy, it seems. But other than that, it’s all on the expected pineapples, coconuts, bananas and marshmallows. With water: a lot of saponification happening, you have to wait for a good fifteen minutes. But then it keeps going on herbs and earth and peelings. Finish: quite long, grassier. Comments: so it’s not one that’s fully on fruits. I’d say quality is similar to that of the 40% version. “Barr an Uisce” meaning “above the water” in old Irish, is also the name of a town in eastern Ireland’s Wicklow County. Wicklow Rare is a sourced blend composed of 80 percent grain whiskey and 20 percent 10-year old single malt matured in bourbon barrels for four years and finished in Oloroso sherry casks for six months. It comes non chill filtered and bottled at 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Care for a small batch, bourbon-matured blend with a 20% malt content finished for 6 months in oloroso sherry casks? Thought so. Clementine, ripe plum, and a firm, peeled-banana nose with vanilla, warm citrus, banana, raisins, and base notes of peppery spice. There’s plenty of structure and complexity on this well-balanced blend, which ebbs away with red fruits and strawberry bubblegum. Continuously juicy, with a butter toffee and white pepper finish. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2016

Notes from the producers... Pale gold in color. Aromas of vanilla, honey and baked fruits (confit). Very smooth entry and then expansive with a mouth coating, oily texture. Mid palate shows a nuttiness and warmth with hints of raisin and plum. Long, clean finish with subtle marmalade notes and caramel. The Wicklow Blend is as mysterious as the ancient mountains that this blended Irish Whiskey is named for.

A special Bushmills for the lucky few: finished in fresh French Banyuls casks for three and a half years and bottled at natural cask strength. In the words of Bushmill's Master Blender: “Banyuls is a French dessert wine with big fruity flavours which really matches the Bushmills spirit. The (Bushmills) Banyuls has a lovely profile, and each time you go back to it you find something different again. It's approachable, it's rounded, it has big flavours, but in a completely rounded way that anybody can enjoy. The finish is comforting with lovely warmth and roundness. The third expression released in the very successful 'Steamship' series, Bushmills Bourbon #3 Char Cask Reserve is the result of a long-standing relationship with the Master coopers at Louisville, Kentucky who reserve some of their best custom-charred x-bourbon casks to mature this unique Irish. The degree of char inside a cask can have a significant impact on a whisk(e)y's flavour, allowing the spirit to cycle deeper into the oak extracting wood-derived flavours. If the charring is done judiciously, the drinker is presented with a myriad of toasty, savoury, barbequed aromas and flavours.  In this case, expect subtle notes of toasted oak, spices and crème brûlée with a long, rich and smooth finish. 40% Alc./Vol. Big one litre format. Juicy notes of cherry, plum, peach, and strawberry, with undertones of peppery spice. The flavor fills out with lovely malty notes, Quaker Oats, and vanilla. ... thought that both the sherry and the bourbon versions within this funny Steamship Collection were rather okay (78-79 points) but I have to confess I’ve been procrastinating with the Port. Colour: gold. Nose: we’re okay, really. Soft herbal teas and dried fruits (bananas, apples) plus fruit peels and a drop of raspberry liqueur. Moist fruitcake (beerawecka) and rosehip tea. I’m afraid we would have called this ‘a little feminine’ back in 2019. Mouth: hey, isn’t the Port the best within this series? This is fully on herbal teas, hawthorn, rosehip, eglantine, a wee slice of cherry clafoutis, then just raspberries. The distillate was shy and submissive anyway, so it couldn’t have clashed. Finish: short but clean and all on red berries. This time that rather worked. Comments: very good surprise here, I wasn’t expecting much. If you like red berries… And even the low strength kind of worked. 82 points - whiskyfun.com

A hard to find special edition Bushmills, this commemorates the 400th anniversary of the license to distil in Antrim originally granted in 1608 to Sir Thomas Phillips. The blend is notable, containing only 5% grain whiskey and 95% malt, 30% of which is "crystal malt". This is high-nitrogen malt that's wetted and roasted in a rotating drum before kilning. It's said to contribute sweet toffee-like flavours.

...A blend of three different types of whiskey -- malt whiskey, grain whiskey, and a third component which is said to be a malt whiskey produced from crystal malt. Brewers and homebrewers know crystal malt well, a slightly caramelized version of malted barley. Its rich texture suggests a decent malt content for a blend. Layers of sweetness (honeyed vanilla, rummy molasses, toasted marshmallow) are balanced by toasted nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate. Very dynamic and with plenty of grit. By now, most readers will be acquainted with Connemara, and so the concept of smokey Irish whiskey will not be new. Produced at the Cooley Distillery, Turf Mor (meaning "Big Turf") which is the second of Connemara's limited edition 'Small Batch' offerings turns the volume up a notch. It has around 55 ppm of phenols which is the well into the Ardbeg-Laphroaig-Lagavulin range making this the peatiest Irish whiskey yet.

Awarded a 'Gold Medal' and 'Best in Class' at the IWSC in 2011.

Tasting note: Very pale straw appearance. Opening sniffs detect sweet manure-like scents - cow pat combined with sweet soot together with underlying hints of caramel and choc fudge. The farmyard notes slightly retreat on the second pass. Entry is discreet and soft. Mid palate explodes on the tongue delivering a semi sweet fusion of caramel, cocoa and elastoplast. Well balanced and pleasantly warming spices add depth. Concludes bone dry and fresh with the cocoa and elastoplast flavours fading into the lengthy aftertaste. Earhty and robust. Another compelling addition to the Irish whiskey scene.58% Alc./Vol.

...This is the first time I ever detected dung (albeit subtly) in a whiskey — and only on the nose, thankfully. It’s curiously intriguing. The style of peat used, along with the youth of this whiskey, has a distinct impact of the whiskey’s flavor. It’s sweet and smoky, which works well. Throw in some bacon fat, diesel oil smoke (like at a boat dock), anise, ginger, honeyed malt, barley, lime, and pear. Underneath all that peat lies what seems like a fairly young whiskey, because it is very brisk and vibrant, but not excessively so. The 'Distiller's Edition' was originally developed for the French market.

Connemara is a wild, mountainous region on the west coast of Ireland, lying between the Atlantic Ocean and Loughs Corrib and Mask. The peat bogs of Connemara are major fuel sources to the region and have played an important role throughout Irish history as an energy source and in the production of whiskey. However, as many of the distilleries in Ireland were located alongside a canal, the transport and use of coal in distilleries became more efficient than peat. This temporarily killed the tradition of drying malted barley over peat fires in the production of whiskey. Managing Director of Cooley Distillery, David Hynes and chairman John Teeling have resurrected this traditional Irish custom. Noted whisky writer, Michael Jackson commented of Connemara “The revival of rustic peatiness adds a whole new element to today’s palette of Irish whiskey flavours…Lots happening. Chimney pots of smoke. I love this whiskey.” (Whisky Magazine Issue 15) Connemara Peated Single Malt was placed fourth in the Irish Whiskey category at Best of the Best 2003 and received a double gold and Best of Irish at the San Fransisco World Spirits Competition 2004.

Managing director Elliot Hughes comments, “I really enjoy it but then I am very biased. We deliberately used bourbon to show where we have got to as a distillery. It is a true reflection of the spirit we are producing as we grow older. These are now seven- and eight-year-old whiskeys. This carries the vanilla flavour; we’re not using big, flavoured casks that can mask the original pure Single Pot Still.” Anticipate hints of dried raspberries, butter mints, followed by white chocolate, flaked almonds soft wood and leather notes gliding into a long finish. Non chill filtered. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

Dingle Celtic Series Samhain Single Malt Irish Whiskey (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $189. 99
    Bottle
    $2279.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50.5%

Launched in late 2022, 'Samhain' is the first release in a new range of limited-edition whiskeys in Dingle's Wheel of the Year series. Marking the beginning of winter and the Celtic new year, Samhain is one of the four main seasonal fire festivals, named after the belief in the cleansing powers of fire. Traditionally, after sunset, Samhain commenced with towering bonfires set ablaze in pairs and livestock were driven between them, believing that the smoke possessed cleansing powers. The liquid is matured in first-fill Bourbon casks before a long finish (2 years) in first fill Muscatel casks. 10,000 bottles are on offer. Elliot Hughes, Managing Director at Dingle Distillery, comments: “We are excited to reveal the Dingle Samhain Single Malt Whiskey, inspired by the ancient Irish celebration of Samhain. Celebrated in Ireland for over 2000 years as well as annually in Dingle and across the land, this release distils a core part of our heritage. This is the first whiskey in our new Wheel of The Year series and is steeped in the traditions of times past that we intend to honour and pay tribute to. We are proud to introduce this latest edition to our Dingle family and believe this limited-edition is one that whiskey lovers and collectors won’t want to miss.”

For those curious: The Celtic Wheel of the Year is divided into eight periods, likewise, the new Wheel of The Year series is set to launch eight editions, following the rhythm of the seasons, equinoxes, and solstices. In ancient Ireland, farming was the epicentre of people’s lives and hugely dependent on the seasons, thus the turn of each season was celebrated with great reverence – and still is to this day.

    IRELAND
    $169. 99
    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

Dingle's sixth batch release is composed of malt matured exclusively in Tawny Port Casks. Marginally more intense than the distillery's core offering, the port adds a subtle dried red berry overlay before a burst of wood spices rounds out the finish. While the wine gets you an extra layer of fruit sweetness, it feels like it's compromised the primary Irish character. 46.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... [Batch 5 tasted] Genteel malt that shows no great age but certainly celebrates an uninhibited maltiness which charms and possesses no pretensions of grandeur. 88.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

[Batch 4 tasted]... This elegant, well-balanced Dingle is created from whiskey matured in bourbon, sherry, and port casks which bring out orange zest, cherry gummies, vanilla, strawberry, barley sugar, and a good rub of ground aromatic spices on the nose. Baked fruits, taffy, strawberry, raspberry coulis, clove, and pepper open up, leading to shortbread sweetness, candied peel, and more sherry fruit, while perky spices are left to carry through on the finish. $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

This is the second edition of Galánta which translates as "Bravery". This time round, individually numbered bottles have been filled with triple distilled spirit at The Shed Distillery after aging in single-use Kentucky Bourbon casks, hand selected by Head Distiller Brian Taft. They've imbued the malt with a delicious balance of vanilla and wood spice. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers...  A wealth of golden caramel, with wood-filled notes of nut and roasted coffee. Palate: A delicious balance of honey, roasted nuts, and hints of sweet apple, followed by a warmth of spice to excite the palate. Finish: An elegant lingering finish that dances between pot-spice and sweetness.

    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Founded in 2014, The Shed Distillery delivers the first whiskey from the western province of Connacht in over a century. This bottling marks the first edition in their Rare & Exclusive Collection. Galánta translates as “Bravery” and “Excellence”. Every drop is distilled by Brian Taft from 100 per cent Irish malted barley, and aged in a mix of x Bourbon and Marsala casks. Maturing for the last seven years, the 2021 includes the entire 2014 production - a total of 8400 bottles. “We’re very proud,” says proprietor, Paul Rigney, “it has taken a big effort and a lot of waiting. Our distiller Brian Taft is our hero, our quiet rock star. He is very shy but brilliant at his job.” The 2021 edition was delayed due to Covid, so they will release the 2022 edition later in the year. 46% Alc./Vol. Extremely limited stocks.

Notes from the producers... Galánta is a lovely, subtle whiskey. There is no added colour so it is relatively pale. The aromas are of toasted wood, coffee and dried fruits. There is a lovely ripeness on the palate with sweet toffee apples and pears, a touch of honey and caramel, with an excellent finish.

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Ranked number 14 in Whisky Advocate Magazine's 2020 Top 20.

Tasting note: Located in the rural town of Drumshanbo, the Shed Distillery was founded in 2014 by PJ Rigney. Five Holstein pot stills (three for whiskey, two for gin), as well as two copper column stills are employed. One of the more anticipated Irish releases of the year, their single pot still whiskey is triple distilled from Irish barley and Irish Barra oats. Maturation takes place in a combination of x-Bourbon and x-Oloroso Sherry casks. Pale gold in colour, the aroma presents youthful but soft aromas of gobstopper, pear drops and dried fruits - in particular, apricots. A medium bodied, fruity, juicy, clean spirit that finishes creamy, genteel yet vibrant, showing pitch perfect sweet-dry balance and hints of Bounty bar through the aftertaste. Summery and delicious. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... After decades of consolidation, Ireland is experiencing a craft whiskey renaissance. Founded in 2014, The Shed Distillery delivers the first whiskey from the western province of Connacht in over a century. Polished creamy sweetness and aromatic spices herald this striking dram, which has been triple-distilled and then matured in first-fill bourbon and oloroso sherry casks. Aromas of caramel, brioche, satsuma, and dried apricot draw you in, ushering in a luscious palate of pear, apple, and freewheeling spices bolstered by dried citrus, lime, and toasted coconut. IRELAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

The Egans have been making whiskey since the 1800s and did so up until the 1870s when they lost out to the multinationals. This represents a rebirth of the P&H Egan brand after family members set about resurrecting the label in 2013. Two whiskies are on offer - a single malt and a single grain. Both mark auspicious beginnings.

Tasting note: A 100% pot still Irish whiskey matured in American oak. Pure gold. Beautiful nose – opens with a floral-soft mix of ripe orchard fruits, buckwheat pancakes, vanilla cream and beeswax. Surprisingly concentrated with superbly pure flavours of apple, pear and honey, framed by vibrant spices and a gorgeous, oily, creamed-up finish that melts in your mouth. Excellent length. Very satisfying, solid Irish. 47% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose is superb, with oat and pecan flapjack, cocoa powder, nutmeg, star anise, and caramelized brown sugar. Golden syrup laced with strands of citrus swim within a smooth, thickly textured malt. A rich sweetness spills over, unctuous with sweet honey and nuts over a base layer of spice. Confident, self-assured, expressive whiskey.

    IRELAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
Tasting note: Matured in American oak casks for a minimum of eight years. Bright gold. Aromas of vanilla wafer, caramel and custard countered by straw / grass. Some balsa wood? Slightly rum-like after air contact. A middleweight, mildly oily grain with a pleasing balance of caramel, vanilla and emerging fruitiness. Glides through the finish which is judiciously spiced, crisp, warming. Good length. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... From vintage 2009, this bourbon cask matured whiskey is around the 8 year mark. Vanilla custard tarts, digestive biscuits, green vegetal notes, and scents of a bakery counter pull you in. Caramel, active spices, soft fruits, peach, apple, pear, pepper, and golden sultana flavors, but as the caramels slide into toffee the grain character becomes more evident into the finish.

    ABV: 53.8%

Distilled at the Cooley Distillery (home to brands like Connemara, Tullamore Dew and Tyrconnell, amongst others), while the aromas need plenty of coaxing to blow off the alcohol, this offers a delicious, mouth-coating arrangement of ripe pears and apples, beeswax and vanilla bean punctuated by bittersweet wood spices, semi-ripe pineapple and hints of banana cake in a prolonged finish. It's a great Irish, with the added allure of being finished in a Caribbean rum cask. Tasted from a 20ml sample. Bottled at natural strength and non chill filtered. 53.8% Alc./Vol.

    Glendalough Poitin (700ml)
    IRELAND
    $39. 99
    Bottle
    $479.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

As the global market for Irish whiskey continues to grow, so does the range. An old category made new is Poitín (pronounced ‘put-cheen’ Irish for ‘small pot'). Unaged and originally distilled using potatoes, this precursor to 'modern' whisky has a long tradition with farm folk. The domestic distillation of the spirit became illegal in 1661 and production went underground.

Glendalough's version is triple distilled in a traditional copper pot-still using malted barley and pure spring water for a strong, authentic taste of Ireland’s original spirit. These new makes are typically lively and complex and make for tasty, vibrant cocktails.

Notes from the producer... The nose. Light, floral, forest berries, gooseberries through the headiness of the higher alcohol. The taste. Unexpectedly smooth and mellow. Sweet and spicy with traces of lychees, apple skin and cracked black pepper sitting over biscuity malts. The finish. Lingering, warming, sweet and a comforting, spicy tail. 40% Alc./Vol.

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
One only to sell. Note some bruising and minor damage to the box.

After thirteen years in x bourbon barrels, this Irish gem spent a year in a Mizunara oak puncheon. Sourced from the Ariake cooperage in the Miyazaki prefecture of Hokkaido Island, these barrels are made using indigenous Japanese oak. It's notoriously expensive, difficult to work with and the wood itself is prone to leaking. To top it off, the trees are harvested at around 200 years old (compared to around 75 for American/European oak). The obvious question is "Does Mizunara oak give a distinctive flavour to whisky?" The consensus is that Mizunara matured whiskies tend to offer a more definite coconut aroma. Other sources suggest the wood contributes attractive sandalwood notes. Some bottlings are clearly more successful than others. This one from Glendalough has received high praise from all quarters. Comes non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Ripe pit fruit, especially apricot and peach, Quaker oats, and comb honey aromas are boosted by aromatic fragrances and sandalwood. Cantaloupe, mango, and papaya are followed by chocolate and cocoa, which pair beautifully with the muted citrus. Fragrant spices really add shape and contribute to a sublime balance, with spicy chocolate, coffee grounds, and menthol to finish. A most impressive leap forward in quality and complexity. 46% Alc./Vol.

Double Gold, Best Single Malt Irish Whiskey & Best Irish Whiskey at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2015.

Until recently, the number of distilleries in Ireland could be counted on one hand, a mute reminder of an industry that once numbered in the hundreds. Glendalough is part of the contemporary revival of the Irish distilling scene, set up by five friends from Wicklow and Dublin with a mutual love of Irish whiskey and a deep passion for craft spirits. The group had massive early success at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2015, (considered one of the world’s most prestigious spirits competitions, showcasing the very best of some 1,500 liquors). In all, nearly 50 bottles won awards, with Glendalough's 13 year old taking out the top prize for the Irish category. Subsequently, whisky writer Jim Murray has rated Glendalough's cask strength Mizunara finish expression a whopping 96 points.

Tasting note: [tasted from a near empty bottle]. Deep bright gold. Beguiling; superb bouquet, exotic even by Irish standards with kumquat jam, fig paste; more vanilla oak and poached pear after exposure. Gorgeous purity. Fantastic freshness and texture; again orchard fruitiness repeats. Terrific length. Dries with hints of clove and just goes on and on. This is all about sublime mouthfeel and balance. Must try Irish. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... fresh dates sprinkled like a Shrove Tuesday pancake, with sugar and lemon... and a touch of lime, too... superb texture: the barley bristles with oaky spice while the light oils help get the spices established; dies slightly as the oak dries vividly and toffee kicks in; a touch milky too... a rather beautiful whiskey, spilling over with spices. A few tired casks evident though.

Delicate, creamy, fruity spicy aromas of cola, cherry chutney, and white toffee with a satiny, lively, fruity medium-to-full body and a warming, interesting, medium-length alpine honey lozenge, peppery spices, nuts, and minerals finish. A tasty and refreshing Irish whisky with a lots of appealing flavors.

An Irish whiskey with a Zinfandel wine cask finish.
Green Spot launched a range of wood finishes in 2015 with a whisky part matured in x Chateau Leoville Barton barrels (ex-Bordeaux barrels from the namesake winery). Here’s another: Green Spot Chateau Montelena brings together Irish traditions from both County Cork and the Napa Valley of California. An Irishman by the name of Barrett purchased the struggling Chateau Montelena winery in the 1970s, hence the association. Distilled from malted and unmalted barley, it's composed of whiskeys that are 7 to 10 years old, aged an additional twelve months in French oak Zinfandel casks from Chateau Montelena.

Other reviews… From Calistoga, California to County Cork, this zinfandel-finished whiskey has bramble, damson jam, red apple, and glacé cherry, with cake mix, flaked almonds, and a steel-tipped edge of spice. Red apple, lemon peel, pithy orange, and crunchy red apple, teasing spice, with just a suggestion of mint mingled into the dry, spicy finish. First Saint-Julien, then Napa; where will Green Spot take our taste buds next?

Single Grain whiskies are very rare as most grain whiskey finds itself into blends. There are only several such products in the world. Many people, including world renowned whiskey expert Jim Murray, consider Cooley’s grain distillery to be one of the best in the world. Greenore has also been recognised by the International Wine and Spirits Competition where it won a gold medal in 2004 and a Silver and “Best in Category” in 2005.

The whiskey is produced from soft Irish water from the Cooley Mountains and high quality grains. It is then left to mature in bourbon casks where the oak imparts subtle vanilla tones and honeyed sweetness that charactises Greenore. Only 5,000 bottles of this limited edition whiskey have been produced. Smaller quantities of older ages will be made available.

Tasting note: Pale gold colour. Subdued aromas include waxy apple, vanilla and delicate floral / dried grass notes. The palate yields off dry flavours of vanilla, wafer biscuit and almond flan. Exceptionally smooth with a gentle spiciness adding body. Finishes dry with a subtle wafer biscuit, grassy fade. Clean and refreshing - arguably closer to Bourbon in style than traditional Irish Whiskey.

Other reviews... Nose: soft, sweet corn, delicious hints of Bourbon; Taste: rich, soft oils, melt in the mouth grain and just a hint of barley for good measure; Finish: crisps up as the oak returns; Balance: just a lovely grain whiskey from one of the world's finest grain distillers. 89 points.

Reportedly a sourced whiskey made from triple distilled pot-still whiskey, Ireland's most traditional style - and some would say rarest. In addition to a high unmalted barley content, the mash bill includes a small proportion of oats. Maturation was predominantly in ex-bourbon barrels with around 10% drawn from ex-oloroso sherry casks.

Other reviews... Quite a light pot still character with no great age. This gives the whiskey a very unusual personality, indeed one I cannot remember bottled before, as it is a style ignored by distillers as a singleton and in the lab I have used this type of pot still only within blends. ...Lemon drizzle cake, hazelnut, dried coconut strips, iced sweet rolls filled with jam and whipped cream, and a jab of ripe gooseberry are all on the nose of this blend of grain and single malt whiskeys. It’s sweet and light-bodied, yet smooth and creamy, with lemon bonbons, vanilla, butterscotch, and hints of cooked fruits, with a spicy finish that retains a fruity juiciness. ...Not too sure what this is, probably 'a brand'. It's done by a 'Hinch Distillery Co.' but this ought to be sourced. The modern whisky world. Colour: white wine. Nose: no proper Irishness that I can find, having said that it's a rather malty blend, with cakes and breads plus the usual vanilla and soft acacia honey. Some popcorn, a few rose petals. Pleasant for sure, nothing to complain about this far. Mouth: the grains are having the upper hand this time, but we're still fine despite all this 'empty-ish sweetness'. Caramel, office coffee, chicory, candyfloss, alcohol. We're reminded of Havana Club. Finish: short and rather empty. Comments: a shame that the grain whiskies took over on the palate, the maltier nose was nice. 75 points - whiskyfun.com

Creamy entry offers an appealing mix of Marie tea biscuits and subtle rum-like sugars. Concludes medium long, with faint suggestions of molasses in the aftertaste. Surprisingly restrained: the rum input seems to both add and take away. 46% Alc./Vol.

Irish Whiskey styles: more than just smooth blends.

Almost anyone could be forgiven for making the naive generalisation that “Irish Whiskey is smoother than Scotch”. That’s because the vast majority of Irish Whiskey consumed is of the blended kind - mostly unpeated and triple distilled. Just like their blended Scotch counterparts, these are inherently smoother and lighter in style. Ironically, it's the very preponderance of blended Irish in the market that has been the primary cause behind several Irish Whiskey misconceptions. Even seasoned whisky drinkers remain ignorant of key facts. Irish Whiskey Myths & Misconceptions. 1: Irish Whiskeys are always triple distilled (and so lighter in flavour). Not all of them. (What is true is that the more times one distills, the spirit tends to retain less of the congeners (or flavouring elements), so the whiskey seems lighter to the palate). Some Irish distilleries double distill, not triple (likewise some Scotch distilleries employ three distillations, rather than the more common two). Don't let anyone try to tell you that all Irish whiskey is triple distilled, and all Scotch is double distilled; both are incorrect.

2: Irish Whisky is never peated. According to Jim Murray, author of “Classic Irish Whiskey’, this is firstly historically inaccurate. “As much of Ireland is covered in peat, it’s hardly surprising that in the 19th century, smoky whisky from inland distilleries was not uncommon. Like Scotland.” Secondly, in the present day, there has been a quiet resurrection of this arguably ‘Traditional’ Irish style. If you’re partial to smoke, try ‘Connemarra’ at Cask Strength.

3: Irish Whiskey is never a Single Malt. It’s true that the market for Irish whiskeys that aren’t blends is relatively small. But some of the more exciting Irish releases of the last few decades have been Single Malts (Connemara, Knapogue Castle). Like their Scotch equivalents, these are produced entirely from malted barley distilled in a pot still. Buy Irish Whiskey Online.
