Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
An older bottling of the acclaimed blend, usually available at Duty Free stores only. We believe this iteration was on the market around 2010.
Other reviews... Old Parr is popular in Japan and South America. Oh, and amongst whisky lovers, especially the older bottles, maybe because Mr. Parr lived for 152 years and married for the second time at the age of 122. Colour: full gold. Nose: very different from the Buchanan, sweeter, fruitier, less 'tertiary', with a lot of orange liqueur and then some brine, game, peat, a little ginger ale, touches of molasses, hay, a little chalk, cut grass… It's very complex but I liked the Buchanan's focus (even) better. Mouth: high peat content, high quality. It's a big blend, really punchy, slightly rough (in the sense that it's not as polished as most blends), that develops mostly on bitter oranges, cloves, juniper berries, pepper and then green tea. Very powerful. Finish: long, gingery and peppery. Certainly not what you'd expect from some blended Scotch, but we won't complain! Comments: probably one of the biggest blends out there. I liked the Buchanan a little better because I thought it was more complex and a little silkier. 87 points - whiskyfun.com - Grand Old Parr 12 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml) - Older BottlingEdinburgh, SCOTLAND$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 43%

Whether you know one or are one, every Old Parr deserves a blend as good as this! In Jim Murray's words, "blending Parr excellence!"Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

A brand that's long been popular in Japan, South America and more recently Australia. This may be the elixir of life you've been searching for. Collectable.

Here we have the 'deluxe' expression, although there's also a 15-year-old, the NAS Old Parr Tribute and the very rare, beautifully presented Old Parr Elizabethan (none of these are available in Australia at the time of writing). The house style is big, bold and complex by blended whisky standards.

Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it.40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Perhaps on about the fourth or fifth mouthfeel, the penny drops that this is not only exceptionally good whisky; it is blending Parr excellence. 91.5 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016
Golden amber color. Aromas of honeyed nut toast and cereal with a soft, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body with a vanilla toffee and pepper finish. A very pleasant, easy-going blend. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

Grant's Distillery Edition Blended Scotch Whisky (1000ml)SCOTLAND$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 46.3%Grant's is one of the better of the lower tier blends available in Australia. This special travel exclusive ups the ante being bottled at 46.3% and non-chill filtered to give it a greater depth of flavour intensity and texture. According to Grant's, expect "...an initially dry citrusy note softening to reveal vanilla sweetness, banana fruitiness and rich maltiness." Big one litre format.
Tasting note: Bright amber gold. A big bouquet by any measure. Fruit yoghurt, chocolate box and vanilla wafer are refreshed by hints of citrus zest. Exposure brings aromas of muesli / cereal to the fore. Superb mouthfeel with a creamy, malt-heavy entry followed by hints of fruit toast, vanilla, granita biscuits and hints of orange zest in the finish. Concludes oily, with buzzing spices in the aftertaste. Body, texture and length combine in a daily dram that has just about everything. 46.3% Alc./Vol.

William Grant began distilling in 1887, with the intention of supplying the then flourishing trade. When his sole distributor collapsed, Grant was left with no outlet for continuing sales. He urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved however, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product has since enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets. It's striking triangular bottle became a trademark, as well as a favourite of several actors, as it wouldn't roll off the stage during rehearsals.

Grants Cask Editions No.2 Sherry Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)Banffshire, SCOTLAND$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 40%The influences of Balvenie and Glenfiddich (also produced by William Grant and Sons) are the basis for Grant's blended whiskies. The company has recently expanded its range with three new releases offering exceptional value for money and unusual depth of flavour by blended whisky standards. In fact, in a blind line up you'd be forgiven for thinking these were single malts.
Like most distilleries with history, Grant's have accrued some colourful stories. Soon after William Grant began distilling in 1887 his sole distributor collapsed, and Grant was left with no outlet for continuing sales. He urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law, who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets, including the adoption of its striking triangular bottle. Its been rumoured that the whisky had favour amongst several heavy drinking Hollywood actors, purely on account of the bottle shape. If they dropped it on stage during rehearsals, it was guaranteed not to roll too far!
The freedom to try new things is one of the joys of being a family owned company with five generations of whisky making experience. In 2001, Grant’s became the first blended Scotch whisky to be finished in sherry casks. Grant’s Master Blender handpicks Spanish Oloroso sherry casks before filling them with already aged whisky which is then left for up to four months to acquire the rich flavours of "...dried fruit, warm spice and sweet honey".
Tasting note: Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Good intensity on the nose with honeyed, toasted malt mingling with the dried fruits. Becomes lighter with aeration with vanilla entering. Appealing. Light entry leads into a malty mid palate burst, countered by soft spices. The Sherry influence is more subdued here than the nose suggests. A dry biscuity finish is followed by a somewhat underwhelming aftertaste. A delicious example nonetheless, and probably with enough oomph to please most single malt snobs. 40% Alc./Vol.

Grant's Cask Edition No.1 is reputedly the only Scotch whisky to be finished in barrels that have previously held ale. Master Blender, Brian Kinsman, fills casks with Edinburgh Ale for 30 days then replaces it with aged Grant’s whisky. The blend then mellows for up to four months, picking up "...creaminess and silky malt flavours".
Tasting note: Pale gold appearance with a pale straw hue. Moderate aromas offer notes of sweet grains, dusty cocoa and old cigar box. Unusual. Exceptionally soft and pure throughout, the palate delivers medium dry flavours that are difficult to pin down, with dried fruit / cocoa notes combining with almost chewy grains into the aftertaste. Fascinating and different, but not ground breaking, yet given the more than fair pricing, this should be a no brainer buy for whisky completionists. 40% Alc./Vol.

Haig Club Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 40%A small quantity of this David Beckham endorsed single grain whisky has just arrived. TV producer Simon Fuller is also involved here (the man who launched the Spice Girls, created the Pop Idol franchise and has managed musical icons like Annie Lennox, Steven Tyler, Amy Winehouse and sporting heroes like Beckham). The bottle and embossed branding compliments the presentation of Beckham’s perfume range. Produced at Cameronbridge distillery, where the house style is light, clean and fruity, 'Club' was matured in a variety of casks. Other reviews... A confectioner’s delight; Fry’s Five Centres, lime, lemon, kumquat, iced buns, fresh mint, and crushed cardamom that matches the chocolate aromas. Those re-charred, rejuvenated casks are very much in evidence here. It has a gilded, satiny sheen, glistening with lemon drizzle cake, butterscotch, orange matchsticks, and banana bread. Incontrovertibly, it inhabits a signature grain style, but it fizzles out with a sticky, sweet aftertaste, like licking the spoon from the icing bowl. 87 points

A wonderful old Haig has come our way, probably bottled at twelve years of age and purchased circa 1950 via a Duty Free store. Some indicative notes of the same or similar bottling from whiskyfun.com below.Other reviews... Colour: amber. Nose: much less caramelly and nutty and more phenolic. Quite some mushrooms, moisture, old wine cellar, freshly crushed mint leaves… Completely different, I guess there was much more Northern Highlanders or island malts. Just superb, with also notes of camphor arising after a while. Mouth: now it’s a little weaker than the Bellows but again, much peatier, with notes of paraffin, dried herbs, eucalyptus, cough syrup… It grows bolder with time, though, and the finish is, again, longer than expected, slightly toffeeish, minty, peaty, tary and mushroomy. An historic name in the world of Scotch whisky. Although specialising in wine, Hedges & Butler began to produce its own blended whiskies before the Second World War, very much aimed at the top end of the market. The 1960s saw the company acquired by leading brewer, The Bass Charrington Group, but since 1998 the brand name has been owned by Ian Macleod Distillers. Given the provenance, fill-level and integrity of the screw cap seal, this relic of time should be a little gem for fans of quality Scottish blends. - Highland Queen "Grand 15" 15 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky - Possible 1970s bottlingHighlands, SCOTLAND$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 40%An old Highland Queen bottling, probably from the 1970s and bottled for the US market. The blending of whiskies is a practise aimed at creating a product of broad appeal. It was for this purpose that Justerni & Brooks developed their now famous J&B Rare for the American market. By using a high proportion of the softer Lowland malts, J&B achieved a classic in its genre which remains one of the biggest selling whiskies on the American market.Over 40 different malt and grain whiskies are matured and then married together for an unusually long time. Distilled, blended & bottled in Scotland.
Tasting note: [2012 bottling] Pale straw colour. Nosing reveals toasty cereals, vanilla wafer and a whisper of peat. Aeration releases more cocoa. Light to medium bodied. Exhibits a lovely malt/grain balance with gentle spices and a fluff of peat adding depth at mid palate. Finishes crisp, clean and beautifully dry with good persistence. In its latest incarnation, one of the best value blends on the market.

Weighing in at an impressive 51% ABV, 'The Celebratory Blend' takes its inspiration from a “breakthrough moment” in John Walker & Sons’ history – the debut of 'Old Highland Whisky' in the 1860s, the company’s first commercial blend to travel from Scotland to across the globe. Described as “rich and complex” the blend revisits the flavours from the Walker family’s grocery store in the 1860s and uses liquid from distilleries that were in operation at the time. - John Walker & Sons Bicentenary Blend 28 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml)SCOTLAND$1299. 00Bottle$15588.00 DozenABV: 46%This is the most limited in the 200th Anniversary series, and also the most expensive. Master Blender, Jim Beveridge and his small team of whisky makers have drawn inspiration from the flavours listed on an original inventory from John Walker’s store. Rare and exceptional whiskies, including ghost stocks from distilleries like Pittyvaich, Cambus and Port Ellen (all at least 28 years old), have been explored to craft a whisky that re-imagines the exotic flavours of the 1820s. The result is the pinnacle of the 2020 collection, packaged to impress in a heavy decanter style bottle and large presentation case. Very limited stocks. 46% Alc./Vol. Notes from Johnnie Walker... A complex, rich whisky with layers of flavour in which an array of fruit aromas come together in harmony, balanced with warming spices and a soft, rolling smoke redolent of the rich array of exotic goods on offer. Dried fruit such as sultanas and figs are sweetened by hints of candied ginger, before berries, brown sugar and aromatic spices fill up the senses. PALATE: The first sip opens the doors to reveal delicious layers of spice mingling with sweet honey and rich molasses inspired by the rows of tempting jars. Waves of sultanas, cocoa beans and herbal notes are carried on wisps of soft smoke leading you further down the aisles of John’s store with every sip. FINISH: A sweet spice lingers as the door closes behind you.

Other reviews... Smoke begins Jim Beveridge’s public replication of the annual Directors Blend concept, built around Johnnie Walker’s signature characteristics. Peat smoke harks back to Islay, but there’s wood smoke, tobacco leaf, and malt, with a salty richness behind it. The grain just gives it a lift of extra sweetness. Polished, with great structure; red apple, raspberry, and sweet linctus wrap up with a long, smoky finish of cigar stub and peat stores. Clear parallels with Directors Blend 2009, but better. If you're into snakes, Johnnie Walker's special Lunar New Year limited edition will be a must for your bar shelf. The packaging was designed by one of the most influential visual artists in the world, Asian-American artist, James Jean. James sought inspiration for his designs from the layers of flavour that Johnnie Walker Master Blender, Emma Walker and her team bring to Blue Label. He says, "I portrayed the snake shedding its skin to represent the idea of renewal and growth. The three snakes symbolise the attributes of wisdom, intelligence, and intuition, while also representing the past, present, and future. The snakes are constantly growing, transforming, and adapting to changing conditions." 40% Alc./Vol. - Johnnie Walker Blue Label Rare Side Of Scotland Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)SCOTLAND$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 40%

Johnny Walker's Rare Side of Scotland features illustrations from Glasgow-based design studio, Timorous Beastie. The theme celebrates the beauty of Scotland's flora and fauna. Aged in x-Bourbon barrels and Refill Sherry Oak, the whisky promises mellow and rounded aromas of dry smoke and sweet raisins, as well as hazelnuts, honey, rose petals, orange and aromatic smoke on the palate. 40% Alc./Vol. - Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 Year Old Highlands Origin Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 42%

A limited edition Black Label under the sub-title of "Highlands Origin", emphasising the source of Diageo's malts that make up the blend. The label depicts the Scottish Highlands in gold, describing aromas and flavours of orange rind, marmalade, honey and a spicy finish. Keen eyes will note this format is actually a blended malt (no grain included) and it arrives at a slightly higher ABV of 42% as opposed to 40% for the standard Black Label bottling.

The Lowlands release of Johnnie Walkers Black Label Origin series, showcases the rich, creamy mouth feel from their standard Black Label 12 Year Old, rounding out this idea by maturing in a bourbon barrel. With whiskies from Glenkinchie and Cameronbridge, this whisky has some grain content, alongside some malts, bringing added sweetness and floral notes to the fore. Much like the Speyside release, expect an absence of smoke when compared to the standard Black Label 12 Year Old. - Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 Year Old Speyside Origin Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)SCOTLAND$119. 99Bottle$1439.88 DozenABV: 42%

Sourced from some of Diageo's Speyside distilleries, Speyside Origin is a light, fruit-driven version of the well-known Black Label 12 Year Old. Leaving behind the smoky finish, the malts of Cardhu and Glendullan shine through with some lovely, fresh green apple and elderflower. Reportedly, works beautifully in a Highball. - Johnnie Walker Black Label 12 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Plus Gold Label Reserve and Double Black MiniaturesSCOTLAND$79. 99Bottle$959.88 Dozen

Black Label was first introduced in 1910 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Labels success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals. It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread. This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.
To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky.
Black Label has many admirers, but perhaps none so famous or devoted as Sir Winston Churchill, whose still life painting 'Bottlescape' (1932) proudly captures the familiar contours of his whisky of choice. Indeed, the company's old timers recall the Herculean efforts required to keep the British PM supplied with his favourite tipple during wartime rationing!
Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky? Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky? The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky. The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour. Whiskies of up to 60 years old contribute to its character. In 1993, a panel of international experts at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded Johnnie Walker Blue Label its most prestigious medal, the Gold Medal for the Best Blended Whisky. Indeed this is a venerable whisky and one that would have been much appreciated by Walkers clients. A toasty, sweet aroma is complemented by a peaty and spicy taste that develops into heady flavours of oak, dark-chocolate and rich fruitcake. Comprising 16 of the world's rarest whiskies, Blue Label is dominated by Islay malt whisky, and balanced by several rich Speyside malts that have undergone exceptional periods of sherry oak maturation.
Other reviews… Magnificently powerful and intense. Caramels, dried peats, elegant cigar smoke, seeds scraped from vanilla beans, brand new pencils, peppercorn, coriander seeds, and star anise make for a deeply satisfying nosing experience. Silky caramels, bountiful fruits of ripe peach, stewed apple, orange pith, and pervasive smoke with elements of burnt tobacco. An abiding finish of smoke, dry spices, and banoffee pie sweetness. Close to perfection. Editor's Choice - 97 points whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2018
...Nose: Opens very slowly to reveal a mass of aromas: lanolin, smoke, hessian, dried fruit, polished wood floors, oak, liquorice, cake, silky red fruit, cream. Palate: Hold it in the mouth and there's allspice, sultana cake, crisp malt, bung cloth, turfy smoke which builds in intensity as the whisky opens. Finish: Long, smoky, but also fruit pastilles. Comment: This needs time. Right enough at this price you're hardly going to shark it back. 90 points - David Broom, whiskymag.com

In the 20's this blend was created for ocean liners, the decanter / bottle being designed with a rounded bottom, so that it will never tip over - just swing. A boon for the barmen who had to endure rough seas and shelf balance and a testimony to Sir Alexander Walker's ingenuity. Swing virtually disappeared for several decades to be recently re-launched as a super-premium blend. Its distribution remains largely confined to duty-free markets. We have imported a small quantity for whisky lovers to experience what is reputedly one of the smoothest, silkiest blended Scotch whiskies on the market today. 40% Alc./Vol. - Johnnie Walker Gold Label 15 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (750ml) - 1990s Asian Market ExclusiveSCOTLAND$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 Dozen

Other reviews... [circa 2019 bottling] No more age statement and more talking about casks and woods, welcome to the modern whisky world. According to some online blurb, this one's meant to have been finished in bourbon (check), Caribbean pot still rum (check) and finally 'Scotch whisky' (whaat, onanistic Scotch?) It's also said to have been boosted with Blair Athol, Cardhu and Strathmill. Just like us. Colour: light gold. Nose: clearly maltier, clearly less smoky. Having said that, the wood's playing the main part here, you get fresh sawdust, broken branches, plywood… And no 'Caribbean pot still rum', I'm afraid. Maybe on the palate… Mouth: starts nicely, malty and with apples, but it's getting immensely oaky after just ten seconds. Sawdust and coconut ruling this wee baby, not my cup of malt for sure, and not my cup of blend either. A little bubblegum too (bubblegum = youth). Finish: medium, still oaky. Sweet oak and cinnamon cookies. Comments: with climate change, deforestation and all that, I'd wager the way would rather be 'less oak' than 'more oak'. 70 points - whiskyfun.com
