An historical curio. In a style of its own, the King's Ransom label was popular in the 1960s and is reported to be a moderately peaty blend. Bottled at 82.3 proof, so somewhere close to 41% Alc./Vol. As to what 'Glenforres' refers to is a mystery...

A new value buy in the one litre blended whisky category. Of Grand Macnish, Jim Murray wrote that it’s "For those who prefer their whisky with character, eccentricity and attitude rather than water." There are several variations in the brand's line up, however the Six Cask Edition is arguably of most interest, having been made with malt whiskies from each of the six different regions of Scotland - Highlands, Lowlands, the Islands, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Sun-dried peats greet the nose with aromas of stewed apples, flaky pastries, apricot conserve, vanilla, and cinnamon. Creamy vanilla and coconut flavors develop, with a slow-burn spiciness crackling in the center of the tongue. Seville orange and caramel cookie flavors escort a long finish of dry, tingling spices, though it could use a little more heft in the mouthfeel. 83 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick 2015

A brand that's long been popular in Japan, South America and more recently Australia. As Serge from whiskyfun.com quips, possibly because Mr. Parr lived for 152 years and married for the second time at the age of 122. Seasoned whisky lovers seek out the older bottles. This may be the elixir of life you've been searching for. Collectable.

Whether you know one or are one, every Old Parr deserves a blend as good as this! In Jim Murray's words, "blending Parr excellence!"

Usually available at Duty Free stores only, Old Parr is named after Tom Parr (pictured on the label), once reputed to be the oldest man in England. Launched in 1909, the brand later found success in export markets such as Japan, Mexico and South America where it was easily identified in its distinctive dimpled and rounded square bottle. The basis of the blend today is Cragganmore, however Glendullan has also been a major component since World War II.

Tasting note: Deep gold / bright copper penny colour. An attractive mix of cocoa, vanilla and breakfast fruit toast with exposure drawing out a fruit'n'nut chocolate aspect. Concentrated for the genre, with a spicy backbone that includes muesli, dried grass and light stewed fruit flavours, ending honeyed yet fresh, grainy, peppery and with excellent length. Quite richly styled. Gets better each time you taste it. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Perhaps on about the fourth or fifth mouthfeel, the penny drops that this is not only exceptionally good whisky; it is blending Parr excellence. 91.5 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2016

Golden amber color. Aromas of honeyed nut toast and cereal with a soft, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body with a vanilla toffee and pepper finish. A very pleasant, easy-going blend. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

Here we have the 'deluxe' expression, although there's also a 15-year-old, the NAS Old Parr Tribute and the very rare, beautifully presented Old Parr Elizabethan (none of these are available in Australia at the time of writing). The house style is big, bold and complex by blended whisky standards.

Other reviews... Old Parr is popular in Japan and South America. Oh, and amongst whisky lovers, especially the older bottles, maybe because Mr. Parr lived for 152 years and married for the second time at the age of 122. Colour: full gold. Nose: very different from the Buchanan, sweeter, fruitier, less 'tertiary', with a lot of orange liqueur and then some brine, game, peat, a little ginger ale, touches of molasses, hay, a little chalk, cut grass… It's very complex but I liked the Buchanan's focus (even) better. Mouth: high peat content, high quality. It's a big blend, really punchy, slightly rough (in the sense that it's not as polished as most blends), that develops mostly on bitter oranges, cloves, juniper berries, pepper and then green tea. Very powerful. Finish: long, gingery and peppery. Certainly not what you'd expect from some blended Scotch, but we won't complain! Comments: probably one of the biggest blends out there. I liked the Buchanan a little better because I thought it was more complex and a little silkier. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.3%

Grant's is one of the better of the lower tier blends available in Australia. This special travel exclusive ups the ante being bottled at 46.3% and non-chill filtered to give it a greater depth of flavour intensity and texture. According to Grant's, expect "...an initially dry citrusy note softening to reveal vanilla sweetness, banana fruitiness and rich maltiness." Big one litre format.

Tasting note: Bright amber gold. A big bouquet by any measure. Fruit yoghurt, chocolate box and vanilla wafer are refreshed by hints of citrus zest. Exposure brings aromas of muesli / cereal to the fore. Superb mouthfeel with a creamy, malt-heavy entry followed by hints of fruit toast, vanilla, granita biscuits and hints of orange zest in the finish. Concludes oily, with buzzing spices in the aftertaste. Body, texture and length combine in a daily dram that has just about everything. 46.3% Alc./Vol.

    $6900.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Created from 25 highly prized malt and grain whiskies, some from distilleries no longer in existence, this superb tribute to the Grant's family tradition comes beautifully packaged and presented in a special 'decanter' style version of Grant's distinctive three sided bottle. 40% Alc./Vol. One only.

William Grant began distilling in 1887, with the intention of supplying the then flourishing trade. When his sole distributor collapsed, Grant was left with no outlet for continuing sales. He urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved however, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product has since enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets. It's striking triangular bottle became a trademark, as well as a favourite of several actors, as it wouldn't roll off the stage during rehearsals.

The influences of Balvenie and Glenfiddich (also produced by William Grant and Sons) are the basis for Grant's blended whiskies. The company has recently expanded its range with three new releases offering exceptional value for money and unusual depth of flavour by blended whisky standards. In fact, in a blind line up you'd be forgiven for thinking these were single malts.

Like most distilleries with history, Grant's have accrued some colourful stories. Soon after William Grant began distilling in 1887 his sole distributor collapsed, and Grant was left with no outlet for continuing sales. He urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law, who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets, including the adoption of its striking triangular bottle. Its been rumoured that the whisky had favour amongst several heavy drinking Hollywood actors, purely on account of the bottle shape. If they dropped it on stage during rehearsals, it was guaranteed not to roll too far!

The freedom to try new things is one of the joys of being a family owned company with five generations of whisky making experience. In 2001, Grant’s became the first blended Scotch whisky to be finished in sherry casks. Grant’s Master Blender handpicks Spanish Oloroso sherry casks before filling them with already aged whisky which is then left for up to four months to acquire the rich flavours of "...dried fruit, warm spice and sweet honey".

Tasting note: Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Good intensity on the nose with honeyed, toasted malt mingling with the dried fruits. Becomes lighter with aeration with vanilla entering. Appealing. Light entry leads into a malty mid palate burst, countered by soft spices. The Sherry influence is more subdued here than the nose suggests. A dry biscuity finish is followed by a somewhat underwhelming aftertaste. A delicious example nonetheless, and probably with enough oomph to please most single malt snobs. 40% Alc./Vol.

Grant's Cask Edition No.1 is reputedly the only Scotch whisky to be finished in barrels that have previously held ale. Master Blender, Brian Kinsman, fills casks with Edinburgh Ale for 30 days then replaces it with aged Grant’s whisky. The blend then mellows for up to four months, picking up "...creaminess and silky malt flavours".

Tasting note: Pale gold appearance with a pale straw hue. Moderate aromas offer notes of sweet grains, dusty cocoa and old cigar box. Unusual. Exceptionally soft and pure throughout, the palate delivers medium dry flavours that are difficult to pin down, with dried fruit / cocoa notes combining with almost chewy grains into the aftertaste. Fascinating and different, but not ground breaking, yet given the more than fair pricing, this should be a no brainer buy for whisky completionists. 40% Alc./Vol.

Safe, reliable and consistent, as well as one of the oldest of Scotch whisky brands, Haig Gold label is an unpretentious blend with a high malt content (around 40%) and an ease of drinking that's made it one of the best-selling Scotch whiskies in the world. Its popularity declined briefly in the 1970s, but anyone who's tasted it recently agrees that current owners, Diageo, have reinvigorated this old standard significantly. Jim Murray for one. Review below. Expect a hint of pepper from the malt as it takes hold in your mouth followed by a whisper of peat on the finish.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper. Nice lift with spicy cinnamon oak, vanilla, sweet malt, toasty cereals and dilute honeycomb. Good depth. Medium to full bodied. A semi sweet, juicy, textural style with bracing spices and gentle oiliness to finish. Medium length. Reminiscent of Black Douglas from a decade ago. Suits mixing. 40% Alc./Vol.

A small quantity of this David Beckham endorsed single grain whisky has just arrived. TV producer Simon Fuller is also involved here (the man who launched the Spice Girls, created the Pop Idol franchise and has managed musical icons like Annie Lennox, Steven Tyler, Amy Winehouse and sporting heroes like Beckham). The bottle and embossed branding compliments the presentation of Beckham’s perfume range. Produced at Cameronbridge distillery, where the house style is light, clean and fruity, 'Club' was matured in a variety of casks.

Other reviews... A confectioner’s delight; Fry’s Five Centres, lime, lemon, kumquat, iced buns, fresh mint, and crushed cardamom that matches the chocolate aromas. Those re-charred, rejuvenated casks are very much in evidence here. It has a gilded, satiny sheen, glistening with lemon drizzle cake, butterscotch, orange matchsticks, and banana bread. Incontrovertibly, it inhabits a signature grain style, but it fizzles out with a sticky, sweet aftertaste, like licking the spoon from the icing bowl. 87 points

"...one of the best young blends around; very old fashioned and a real cracker. " - Jim Murray

Founded in 1964, Inver House Distillers operate lesser known single malt distilleries like Balblair, Balmenach, Knockdhu, Pulteney and Speyburn. Since been taken over by Thai-based drinks giant, ThaiBev, several longstanding brands have dropped off the portfolio. 'Green Plaid' is a very old label that deserves a longer life. This refreshing and youthful whisky has a lightness and a style reminiscent of the entry level Cutty Sark blends - with a touch of smoke for good measure.

Tasting notes: Medium to light gold in colour. Opens borderline neutral developing moderately fragrant, clean, grainy accents including vanilla, toasted cereals and frail peat. Entry is light, medium-sweet gaining malt input, subdued fruitiness and budding spices through the middle stages. Ends crisp, vibrant, medium long with an attractive combination of cereals, toffee apple and trace lanolin. If you enjoy Ballantines or J&B, you should find pleasant similarities here. 40% alc./vol.

Other reviews... The legend of Green Plaid is even more ancient than the distilling of Scotch Whisky. 'Plaid' is the traditional Scottish name for the heavy woolen tartan material used to make the famous kilt. It is thought that Green Plaid was worn by the first Lord of the Isles, a 12th Century Viking Warrior called Somerled. Today the Lord of the Isles tartan is incorporated into the label of each bottle of Inver House whisky.

Founded in 1964, Inver House is an independent Scottish based company. Within their portfolio there are five distilleries –Pulteney, Balblair, Speyburn, Knockdhu and Balmenach – each producing its own distinctive, individual single malt whisky. The component distillates of the Inverhouse blend are specially selected from the four principal regions of Scotch whisky production - Speyside, Northern Highland, West of Scotland Isles and the Southern Lowland regions. Centrally located in Airdrie, the company is well placed with warehousing for 500,000 barrels of whisky plus state of the art blending and laboratory facilities.

The blending of whiskies is a practise aimed at creating a product of broad appeal. It was for this purpose that Justerni & Brooks developed their now famous J&B Rare for the American market. By using a high proportion of the softer Lowland malts, J&B achieved a classic in its genre which remains one of the biggest selling whiskies on the American market.

Over 40 different malt and grain whiskies are matured and then married together for an unusually long time. Distilled, blended & bottled in Scotland.

Exhibits a lovely malt/grain balance with gentle spices and a fluff of peat adding depth at mid palate. Finishes crisp, clean and beautifully dry with good persistence. In its latest incarnation, one of the best value blends on the market.

This is the most limited in the 200th Anniversary series, and also the most expensive. Master Blender, Jim Beveridge and his small team of whisky makers have drawn inspiration from the flavours listed on an original inventory from John Walker’s store. Rare and exceptional whiskies, including ghost stocks from distilleries like Pittyvaich, Cambus and Port Ellen (all at least 28 years old), have been explored to craft a whisky that re-imagines the exotic flavours of the 1820s. The result is the pinnacle of the 2020 collection, packaged to impress in a heavy decanter style bottle and large presentation case. Very limited stocks. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from Johnnie Walker... A complex, rich whisky with layers of flavour in which an array of fruit aromas come together in harmony, balanced with warming spices and a soft, rolling smoke redolent of the rich array of exotic goods on offer. Dried fruit such as sultanas and figs are sweetened by hints of candied ginger, before berries, brown sugar and aromatic spices fill up the senses. PALATE: The first sip opens the doors to reveal delicious layers of spice mingling with sweet honey and rich molasses inspired by the rows of tempting jars. Waves of sultanas, cocoa beans and herbal notes are carried on wisps of soft smoke leading you further down the aisles of John’s store with every sip. FINISH: A sweet spice lingers as the door closes behind you.

Other reviews... Smoke begins Jim Beveridge’s public replication of the annual Directors Blend concept, built around Johnnie Walker’s signature characteristics. Peat smoke harks back to Islay, but there’s wood smoke, tobacco leaf, and malt, with a salty richness behind it. The grain just gives it a lift of extra sweetness. Polished, with great structure; red apple, raspberry, and sweet linctus wrap up with a long, smoky finish of cigar stub and peat stores. Clear parallels with Directors Blend 2009, but better. The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

Closing in 1981, Port Ellen has held its "Ghost" status for over 30 years, now. Yet Diageo don't seem to be running all that dry of it... Johnnie Walker believe they have done the extinct distilleries product justice with this Blue Label blend. The reviews seem to be backing up that idea too. 8 different single malts from every corner of Scotland have been used, including two more Ghost distilleries. First and foremost, Port Ellen, then grain whisky from Carsebridge and Caledonian and then malts from Dailuaine, Cragganmrore, Mortlach, Blair Athol and Oban. If you don't want to spend 4 figures to experience this near forgotten dram, then here is your chance.

Other reviews.... This uninhibited, tempestuous expression of Blue Label highlights the artistry of the blender through the judicious use of closed distillery malts and grains. Coastal notes of sea spray, lemon, dirty peat smoke, cookies and cream, After Eight mints, caramel, and dry-roasted spice aromas. Combining lemon bonbon, waxy orange, cookie dough, fondant icing, and chocolate, with tobacco smoke, hints of peppermint, and grapefruit notes, this flagrantly outclasses the Brora variant.

A collaborative bottling from two of the UK's most respected luxury brands, this is definitely one of Walker's most distinctive limited editions to date. The striking carton interior shows Dunhill’s famous Chassis design evoking the rolling hills of Scotland. Or is it a contemporary urban landscape? Designed for the travel retail market, the one litre bottle features a map design, which also decorates the interior and exterior of the pack. As always, made with rare whiskies from the most prized Johnnie Walker reserves. Extremely limited stocks.

'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Johnnie Walker's selection of long closed "ghost" distilleries continue to feature in a series of limited edition Blue Label bottlings. The fifth in the line up includes dwindling reserves from Port Dundas, which shipped its distinct Scotch from Glasgow canals to the world for nearly 200 years. Cambus and Brora are also in the mix, as well as rare whiskies like Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie. The latter add spiced apple notes alongside the aromas of peaches and dark berries from Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk.

Built in Glasgow in 1811 at the highest point in the city’s rich commercial history, the historic Port Dundas distillery closed in 2010 after Diageo moved the majority of its grain whisky production to Cameronbridge. It traditionally contributed to blends, including Bell's, Black & White, Haig, J&B, Johnnie Walker, Vat 69 and White Horse. Slowly but surely prices are increasing as awareness of its limited nature and generally good to excellent quality gains ground.

Learning more about your Scotch whiskies ...

Over the last few decades, a growing number of distilleries have begun marketing a portion of the whisky they distil for consumption as single malt whisky. But by far the greater part of their production remains reserved for the world famous blended scotch whiskies. By definition, a blended whisky contains both single malt and grain whisky in varying proportions and ages. For example, a typical blend might contain between 15 and 40 different single malt whiskies as well as grain whiskies. Even the cheapest blended whiskies usually contain at least 5% of Single Malt although more commonly malt content will range from anywhere between 10% - 40%.
