Historical notes: Bundy Select Vat is finally here but was it worth the wait? According to the June 22nd post of the NewsMail, the answer is a resounding "YES!""Jason Tomkins spent 11 days camping outside the Bundy Rum Bondstore. And the wait paid off on Saturday, when he became the first person to lay his hands on the Bundaberg Distilling Company's latest special editions release, the Bundaberg Original Select Vat Rum."
"I turned up on (June 13) and I camped there the whole time," Mr Tomkins said. "I've done it a few times. Last year I camped out for three weeks."
Hundreds of people gathered for the launch of the four-year-old rum.
Bundaberg Distilling Company Bondstore manager Haydn Jobson said the unveiling was exciting for the distillery. "Utilising the Distillery's 120 years of rum making expertise, our master craftsman searched through two-year-old original rum reserves and hand selected those that exhibited the right qualities and characteristics," he said. "These premium rum reserves were then double aged for a total of four years in oak vats to produce this product."

Bundaberg rum has been an integral part of Australia’s heritage since 1888, born out of the canefields of Queensland. In 1907 a disastrous fire ravaged the Bundaberg Distillery. Despite courageous efforts local fire fighters were unable to prevent extensive damage. The origin of the fire remains a mystery. One hundred and one years later, Bundaberg 101 has been released to commemorate the event - a rich dark rum with a hint of smoke. Many collectors consider this one of the most visually impressive box and bottle designs produced by Bundy to date. 40% Alc./Vol. - Bundaberg Flying Wheel Limited Release Rum (700ml)Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 37%

Bundaberg rum has been an integral part of Australia's heritage since 1888, born out of the canefields of Queensland. In an already wide range of collectible editions, this latest release named 'Founding Fathers' serves as a tribute to the men who saved the distillery from liquidation in 1894.
Only 4,500 cases of the rum have been produced, with each bottle individually numbered. This is one of the very few releases that does not feature the Bundy Bear, thus making it a significant special collectors item - one sure to skyrocket in value in the near future.

Released in 1999 in anticipation of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Bundaberg sold this rum as a duty-free exclusive to tempt all the visitors who came to watch the Games. Reportedly the precursor to the Distillers No.3, this rum is lighter and more mellow than their trademark dark rum but is easily one of their most sought-after. 312 bottles of this venerable column distilled rum are on offer from Cadenheads, and that's about all that's known. We believe there are only four distilleries on Grenada: Renegade (the new kid on the block since 2021), Westerhall, Rivers Antoine and Clarke’s Court, the last of which was formed in 1937, operating under the umbrella of the Grenada Sugar Factory (the largest on the island), however that doesn't help to narrow it down by much. Cadenhead's notes suggest a decadent experience including flavours of “toffee, peaches in syrup, apricots, white chocolate with cashew nuts, bananas and peppercorns.” Sounds a bit like a very old single grain whisky... 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
- 1990 Cadenhead's MEV Enmore Distillery 26 Year Old Cask Strength Guyanese Rum (700ml)GUYANA$370. 00Bottle$4440.00 DozenABV: 57.2%An indie release that rum purists will be pleased to get their hands on is this exceptionally old Enmore. Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2017 as part of Cadenhead’s 175th Anniversary celebrations, it was limited to one bottle per customer at Cadenhead's stores in the UK, so as you'd expect, there's very little to go around for Australian rum lovers. As an original distillery bottling it's quite collectable. The 'MEV' marque stands for 'Main Enmore Versailles'. According to one source, "Many of the 1990 Enmores wear this mark, which suggests that the Main Rum Company probably imported or bought a lot of rum at that time." As the marque suggests, this was distilled using the Versailles Single Wooden Pot Still, located at the Enmore Distillery at the time of distillation in 1990 (the still was moved to the Uitvlugt Distillery in 1995 and subsequently to the Diamond Distillery in 1999). The rum was shipped to Europe for maturation by Cadenheads. Very limited stocks. 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

1975 Cadenhead's Green Label Demerara Rum (700ml)GUYANA$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 38.5%The firm of William Cadenhead Ltd, Wine and Spirit Merchants, was founded in 1842 and is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. The company was in the ownership of the same family until taken over by J & A Mitchell & Co.Ltd in 1972, the proprietors of Springbank distillery. Today, Cadenhead is probably the only Company in the world that holds extensive stocks of old matured-in-oak Demerara Rum (though they're also legendary for bottling excellent single cask, cask-strength, non-chill-filtered whiskies). The company places particular emphasis on the individuality of each bottling and bottle only a single cask of Rum at one time.
Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river, which are produced from both pot and column stills. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Cadenhead's Green Label Demerara has been bottled from a specially selected individual cask distilled in 1975. In order to maximise flavour, the rum has not been treated, with the exception of the addition of water added to bring the spirit to a standard strength.
Tasting note: Those who spend less than a few minutes nosing this spirit are missing the point (and probably wasting their money). It demands contemplation and will continue unfolding for at least ten minutes, during which the aftertaste will rebound several times with surprising intensity. Try to think of every rum you've ever tasted combined into one. Both aromatically and in the mouth it offers a typically massive Demerara experience with huge off-dry flavours of liquorice, roast nut, coffee, brown sugar, dried banana, leather and spice followed by an exceptionally long, drying aftertaste. Other than a pleasantly spicy, delicate warmth the spirit is almost indiscernible, while the length, texture, balance and mouth feel are impeccable. Unquestionably it is one of the world's great rums but begs the question: What else have Cadenhead's got to show that we don't know about? 40.3%

2000 Cadenhead's JMLR Hampden Distillery 8 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$145. 00Bottle$1740.00 DozenABV: 63.2%An intriguing rum from a now closed distillery. Picture indicative only.
Tasting note: Very pale straw colour with flashes of gold. A three phase bouquet exudes a gentle nose prickle; first pass issuing notes of vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon, becoming riper and more estery with aeration as banana confectionary / fried banana in the second pass. After five minutes, the third phase becomes heavier offering a liquorice strap top note emerging over scents of golden syrup and molasses. Wonderful aromatic complexity. The entry is deceptively light, soft and sweet, then explodes with a bitter/sweet wave of spices that contribute to the slightly prickly and hot mouth feel, however the overall balance is remarkable at this high ABV. There is a flash of burnt sugar (or is it sulphur?) though it remains slight. Spices subside towards the finish which is momentarily sweet as flavours of brown sugar and fried banana return. Concludes exceptionally long and dry with the molasses persisting. Wow! A massive rum experience. 63.2%

- Cadenheads Green Label 18 Year Old Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 46%
Cadenhead's Green Label series are usually single-country blends, sometimes mashed together from multiple distilleries (or stills, or both), mostly from around the Caribbean and Central/South America. The labels offer less detail than the cask strength “Dated Distillation” bottlings, hence, the exact source of this rum remains undisclosed. One can only guess based on the taste as there are three distilleries on the island: Angostura, Fernandes and Trinidad Distillers. This is noteworthy for carrying a significant age statement. 672 bottles produced. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.
Notes from the bottlers... “Fresh and floral with minty notes and a constant sweetness. An interesting and characterful rum that kept the panel wanting more. Mango, herbal, mint leaves, bay leaves. Floral, peppermint, raw Manuka honey”.
- 2008 Cadenheads Green Label 10 Year Old Jamaican Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$130. 00Bottle$1560.00 DozenABV: 46%Another single cask release from Cadenheads, this time a blend of pot and column still rums, with the official notes reading, "Some soft red fruits and cream along with cinnamon, star anise and then apple skins, paprika and danish pastries." This batch was a run of 312 bottles at 46% Alc./Vol.
- 1993 Cadenheads MPM Uitvlugt Distillery Single Cask 25 Year Old Cask Strength Guyana Rum (700ml)GUYANA$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 49.9%
'ICBU' was the marque used to identify rums from the Dutch owned Uitvulgt Distillery. While Uitvlugt continues to operate as a sugar refinery and producer of molasses, the equipment used for rum production reportedly ceased operation in 2000 and was moved to the El Dorado Distillery. Not surprisingly, Uitvulgt's have become quite collectible.
In this instance, the “MPM” moniker appears to be a Cadenhead convention, and probably stands for "Main Port Mourant" or some similar variation – conveying that the rum is from an Uitvlugt pot still. Cadenhead's release is from a single barrel, filled in October 1993, matured in Campbeltown, Scotland and emptied in early 2019 with an outturn of 204 bottles. It's a non chill filtered / all natural rum.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Grassy; haylofts and very oily. Hints of varnish, raisins, dried orange peel and marzipan. Palate: big rum, some ginger powder, kiwi fruits, brown bread toast with salted butter. Lychee, popping candy and lemon juice. Finish: Faint tropical fruits give way to more grassy, herbal notes. 49.9% Alc./Vol.

Cadenheads Green Label 12 Year Old Australian Rum (700ml)AUSTRALIA$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 46%Tasting note: You might think Cadenhead's experience in the rum trade is fairly recent, but they've actually been bottling rums almost as long as whisky - since the early 1900s when they were based in their original location in Aberdeen. They continue to source rums from around the world, gathering them in Campbeltown to be further matured. This one's from an undisclosed Australian distillery. It presents a soft nose of dried apricots and figs plus hints of raw sugar and allspice and is well balanced with flavours of dark chocolate and dates, followed by a brief surge of fairy-floss-vanilla sweetness. The aftertaste suggests dried mango, light molasses and lingers with low-key spices. Kind of similar to a young, fruity cognac. Our bet is it's Beenleigh rather than Bundy. 46% Alc./vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from Cadenhead's... Nose: Apricots, cinnamon, freshly baked gingerbread. Flavour: Praline, dried figs, chocolate orange. Finish: Nectarines, hoisin sauce, cured ham.
- 2009 Cadenheads Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos 11 Year Old Cask Strength Dominican Republic Rum (700ml)DOMINICAN REPUBLIC$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 55%A high strength column distilled Dominican Rum from indie bottlers, Cadenheads.
Notes from Cadenheads... Nose: Coconut oil, banana chips, vanilla pods. Flavour: Honey and pineapple juice. Finish: Treacle scones, brown sugar and liquorice. 55% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
- Cadenheads 175th Anniversary Green Label 14 Year Old Jamaican Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 46%Given that Cadenhead's big celebration was in 2017, this is a fairly late 175th Anniversary release to arrive in Australia. Official notes describe "a rum full and loaded with green banana, cooked bean sprouts; enveloping richness, with dried apricots in the foreground." In short - full bodied and fruity. Comes packaged with a commemorative medallion hang tag. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.
- 2001 Cadenheads Trinidad Distillers 19 Year Old Cask Strength Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 55%Another brightly presented, all-natural column distilled rum from Cadenhead's Single Cask collection.
- Cadenheads Green Label Overproof Jamaican White Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 63%Great to see high proof white rums making there way to our shores. Those from the island of Jamaica are considered the "Queens of funk", a title earned for their high ester count that can yield aromas and flavours of pineapple, overripe banana and stone fruits. Just 102 bottles of this non chill filtered Cadenhead's beauty have been released. Its plush green and canary yellow packaging evokes tropical rum punches and Tiki cocktails. Because it's so powerful, mixologists liken its use to salt in cooking. Says one: "Sometimes you need a little salt; it makes everything better. I’ll often add a quarter-ounce or a few dashes of overproof white rum to cocktails that need a little oomph.” Very limited stocks. Notes from Cadenheads... Nose: Sweet, honey roasted peanuts, melon, candied ginger, fennel, rosemary and faint cherry cough medicine. Flavour: More ginger spice with caramel, apple struddle. Pistachio nuts, clotted cream and soft spearmint with warming spice. Finish: Very herbal with lingering soft spice, black pepper, star anise, corriander and fennel before becoming more fruit - satsumas and grapeskins.
- 2005 Cadenheads TMAH Trinidad Distillers 12 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 67.4%Another collectable celebrating Cadenhead's 175th Anniversary - as noted on the box and medallion hang tag. This one from Trinidad Distillers was column distilled and weighs in at a whopping ABV. Established by Angostura back in the 1940s, the venture was mostly producing rums from imported molasses. As to what 'TMAH' stands for on the label remains a mystery. What is certain is that at 67.4% Alc./Vol., this is going to be an absolute beast. Kudos to Cadenheads for continuing to seek out and bottle these completely unadulterated Caribbean gems. Comes non chill filtered.
- 2001 Cadenheads 17 Year Old Classic Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 50%The regular Classic Rum is a mainstay of Cadenhead's portfolio, so as a special treat for 2019, they've released a single cask 17 year old from the original Classic rum stock laid down in 2001. The spirit is a mix of pot and column still styles. In Cadenhead's words expect, "a definite Jamaican influence with hints of diesel, burnt olive oil, chocolate orange cake and waxiness." 50% Alc./Vol.
- Cadenheads NMC Volcano Distillery Cask Strength 11 Year Old Nicaraguan Rum (700ml)NICARAGUA$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 62%A big cask strength rum which is what you'd expect from a distillery named 'Volcano'. Cadenhead's describe it in the following way: "Nose: Fruity, darker fruits – blackcurrant and figs along with rocket and other crisp leafs and a hint of gunpowder tea. Palate: Very creamy, roasted sweet potato sprinkled with nutmeg. Finish: Very moreish. Smooth elegant lingering creaminess with faint spice." 62% Alc./Vol.
- Cadenheads Green Label 9 Year Old Haitian Rum (700ml)HAITI$130. 00Bottle$1560.00 DozenABV: 46%One of a handful of rums we've been able to source from Haiti. Influenced by the French agricole tradition, this lighter coloured style is still big on flavour. All ex bourbon oak matured, it's almost certain Cadenhead's sourced it from that very famous distillery, Barbancourt. Notes from the bottler... Nose: Minty sweet notes along with a lively hit of eucalyptus at first but this is soon tempered by a rich sweet fruity note. Palate: Sweet and very rich to start, some tropical fruits and all spice mingle with a rich oily middle palate of soft peaches and honey. Clean soft fruity finish, summer on the beach comes to mind as this well balanced rum finishes its dance across the palate. 46% Alc./Vol.
- Cadenheads Green Label 15 Year Old Guyanan Rum (700ml)GUYANA$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 46%The firm of William Cadenhead Ltd, Wine and Spirit Merchants, was founded in 1842 and is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. Guyana is justly famous for its rich, heavy Demerara Rums, named for a local river. Demerara Rums can be aged for extended periods (25-year-old varieties are on the market) and are frequently used for blending with lighter Rums from other regions. Neighboring Surinam and French Guyana produce similar full-bodied Rums. This is a big, old fashioned style, without being especially dark - no colouring has been added. In Cadenhead's own words, expect a rum that's "... Creamy and dry at the front but opens to a sweet crisp fruity tone as the dram crosses the palate, Victoria sponge and fresh cream then a little honeycomb chocolate with peppery sweet spices. .Finish Quite rich thicker than expected with some rather nice vanilla & spice." 46% Alc./Vol.

- 1991 Cadenheads TMAH Trinidad Distillers 25 Year Old Cask Strength Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 64.3%Craft-indie bottler, Cadenheads offer another atomic-strength rum packaged as part of their 175th Anniversary Collection (each bottle also has a little commemorative metal hang tag). The rum was sourced from Trinidad Distillers, a large operation established in the 1940s. When Angostura's founders arrived in Trinidad they initially out-sourced rums to make their world famous bitters. However the son of the founder, Don Carlos, always intended to create his own rum. It wasn't until 1947 that the great grandson of the founder, Robert Siegert (with Mr Gomez and Thomas Gatcliffe) built the first distillery in Port of Spain. Boasting seven column stills, TD today produces over 18 million litres annually, mostly for export. The Lone Caner rum blog reports "...most of the molasses they work with originates outside of Trinidad – in Guyana, Panama and the Dominican Republic. In any event, Angostura as a company has little to do with it." Laid into cask in 1991 this exceptionally old expression arrives at a remarkable natural strength of 64.3% Alc./Vol. (The meaning behind the designation "TMAH" on the label is not stated). Non chill filtered. Very limited stocks. Other reviews... A rum like Cadenhead’s 21 year old is a curious beast. Dissecting its profile and coming up with tasting notes is not like having the elements line up and present themselves one after another, like some kind of surreal audition or a debutante’s ball... I had been softened by several forty percenters, sampled prior to cracking this one, and was consequently somewhat unprepared for the force with which the TMAH assaulted my beak (it was sharp and deep, and should absolutely be left to stand for a while before nosing). I could barely discern any molasses background at all, in between furiously swirling notes of rye bread, salt biscuits and salt butter. Not much caramel here. But patience, patience – it did get better. After opening up, it smoothened out a good bit and simply became an intense drink rather than a skewering one – and one could gradually tease out thin threads of honey and nougat, and sweeter notes of vanilla, cherries…and a little spicy note of marzipan. That didn’t soften the arrival, of course. It was a little less than medium bodied, this rum – even thin, which I didn’t care for – and it detonated with a hurricane force level of taste, scattering shrapnel of sweet and salt in all directions. Dates and figs came to mind, more crackers, a sharp aged cheddar (but not as creamy). Adding water helped here: almonds, nutmeg and slivers of dried fruit emerged, but slowly, thinly, as if terrified of being bludgeoned to death by the alcohol. “Chewy” would not describe the experience exactly, but it comes close. Appropriately enough for such a full proof glass of high-test, the finish was enormously long, a sarissa of lingering flavours of nutmeg and vanilla and light sharp red fruit (pomegranates?). Cask strength, overproof, full proof or whatever – it was certainly a rum that demanded attention... the encounter as a whole is quite something. And, it must be conceded, occasionally painful. - thelonecaner.com

Cana Brava Rum (1000ml)PANAMA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 43%Named after the wild sugar cane that grows in the central Panamanian province of Herrera, known for its super high sugar content that's perfect for making top grade molasses. The 86 Co have set out to create a rum made in the style that inspired so many classic cocktails like the Daiquiri, El Presidente, Cuba Libre, and Mojito; a “Carta Blanca”. It's a style of rum that tastes like sugar cane and is supported by the flavours from the oak, not the other way around. This rum has been aged for three years in a combination of new un-charred American oak and used American Whisky barrels, and then blended with older rums for consistency before being carbon filtered. Distillation takes place in a 1922 continuous copper and brass still under the supervision of a former Minister of Cuban Rum, "Don Pancho" J.Fernandez. Tasting note: Clear. Attractive opening aroma offers suggestions of lime juice, unripe pineapple and vanilla custard. A silky entry leads into a svelte textured, light to medium bodied profile of custard and raw sugar to finish dry, balanced and with hints of citrus peel and dried banana accompanied by a mildly peppery kick. Good length. 43% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... “Wow, the juicy fruitiness (tropical) and cocoa bean bitterness in the opening whiffs set my imagination on fire.” Highly Recommended. - Spirit Journal December 2012 - Cana Rio Cachaca (700ml)BRAZIL$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenABV: 40%A Suntory brand, this handsomely packaged cachaca is produced from fresh sugar cane and double distilled in copper pot stills. Other reviews... Clear color. Delicate, cheesy, citrusy savory vegetal aromas of vanilla yogurt nuts and raisins, dried cherries, cane stalk, and menthol mint with a satiny, lively, fruity medium body and a tingling, interesting, medium-length sweet cream, rock candy, grass, and bamboo finish. A solid choice for caipirinhas and light rum cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol. 87 points - www.tastings.com
- Cane Island Secret Distillery 12 Year Old Single Estate Nicaragua Rum (700ml)NICARAGUA$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 43%
The second release from Cane Island ups the ante with an award winning, twelve year old single estate rum from Central America. This is a column distilled expression that is 100% tropically aged – but with a twist…it was not actually aged in Nicaragua. Although the distillery is listed as ‘Secret’ on the bottle, you can take it from us that the spirit is from Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua (CLN), located in the Nicaraguan capitol of Managua. If you’ve heard of that distillery before, it’s no wonder. They produce a little brand called ‘Flor de Cana‘ there as well! This expression won a Gold medal at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition in June 2022. Produced from molasses derived from CLN’s own cane plantations in the Chichigalpa, after a relatively short fermentation of 24-36 hours, the wash was distilled using a five-column still where heavy rum is taken from the first column at 75% abv and light rum is taken from the fifth column at 95% abv. The CLN marques are normally blended together and proofed down to 70% abv before aging. It was then matured for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels. This result has a very rich mouthfeel, delivering what you'd expect from an honest 12 year old. 43% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the importers... Nose: Lightly funky tropical fruit salad, unburnt tobacco, vanilla and biscuit spices plus a nice orange zest as well with vanilla paste there too. Palate: More of those tropical fruits – banana, pawpaw and even some lychee there, the tobacco notes continue on the palate as well, plus a nice vanilla note to round it all off. Finish: A lovely, sweet and satisfying finish with chocolate and coffee note alongside more of that delicious fruitiness and a jaffa choc-orange makes itself known as it fades. A very easy (almost dangerously so) drinking rum that will disappear quickly on a table with friends. Big and rich with masses of fruit and chocolate notes, as well as a pleasant unburnt tobacco backbone. The touch of orange really lifts this one to something special. Complex and with lots to chat about in the flavour profile, sip this one neat – or at most a cube or two of ice.
- Cane Island Trinidad Distillers 8 Year Old Single Estate Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 43%
Cane Island is associated with Infinity Spirits, a developer and supplier of rum brands based in the Netherlands. The company has been buying, blending and bottling rums from around the world for around ten years. The Trinidad 8 year old is part of their ‘Single Estate Series’, sourced from Trinidad Distillers Limited (TDL). If you haven’t heard of TDL, it’s much, much more commonly known as Angostura Distillery, which we bet you have heard of. The molasses used is sourced from outside the country as the last sugar refinery in Trinidad and Tobago closed down in 2007. It's now shipped in from Guyana, the Dominican Republic and Fiji. Fermented for between 48-56 hours using their own proprietary yeast strain, the rum is put through TDL’s five-column still with heavy spirit being tapped at around 80% ABV from the first column. A much lighter spirit is tapped from the fifth, while several medium-bodied spirits are taken from other points on the stills and used for blending. All are aged separately in ex-bourbon (Jack Daniels & Four Roses) casks before bottling. Cane Island are quite open about sugar and colour – they add around 10g/l of sugar and may use E150 (caramel) to colour their rums for consistency. We applaud their transparency!
Notes from the importers... Nose: Mashed banana, stone fruit , stewed apple and pastry – like bakery apple slice. Palate: Lovely visocus mouthfeel – coats the whole palate instantly. Sweet tinned prunes with chocolate notes, salted caramel, liquorice, coffee and vanilla custard. Finish: Sweet and easy with a nice mild pepper to offset. The fruit and spice notes really last and that slight pepper walks with them the whole way. This is a truly easy going and most sippable rum. Whilst sweetened – it’s not overly sweet, and the pepper really offsets that nicely. A very approachable rum that won’t scare a ‘newbie’ with new and unfamiliar notes, but with enough complexity and great balance to satisfy a season rum drinker. 43% Alc./Vol.

- 1996 Caroni 23 Year Old 'Tasting Gang' Full Proof Blended Trinidad Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$599. 00Bottle$7188.00 DozenABV: 63.5%Carribbean rum doesn't come much rarer or more collectable than Caroni. Various bottlers have secured casks over the years and the last remaining stocks are slowly being released. This edition was composed by a team of twenty three European Caroni enthusiasts who met in Cognac - hence the sub title: "Tasting Gang". After sampling 173 barrels, they settled on a blend of 22 casks. All the rums selected were distilled in 1996 and matured on Trinidad before being moved to Guyana where they remained in situ until 2019 losing 85% of the liquid to evaporation. This extraordinary collaborative effort was incrementally released by Luca Gargano of Velier. Based in Genoa, Gargano has a reputation for uncovering the world’s finest (and most obscure) rums. This represents the 38th and second last edition. 5083 bottles are on offer world wide. Australia has received a tiny allocation. Once these are gone, they're gone forever. The Caroni Estate Distillery (est. 1918), closed in 2003 and is now sadly, demolished. It was built on the site of an old sugar factory and for a period supplied rums to the British Navy. At the time, there were some eight to ten other sugar factories operating, each producing different types (and qualities) of rums, bought up by merchants and sold to rum shops all over the island. Caroni gradually increased the quality of its distilling process, moving on from its original cast iron still to a wooden coffey still, until 1945 when they acquired a copper still which was followed by a single column in 1957 and then a four column Gerb Herman still in 1980. Rums from the estate gained a reputation for being particularly flavoursome.
Carribbean Class.
Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
