Emmanuel Brochet hails from the Villers-aux-Noeuds village south of the city of Reims. He farms 2.5 hectares of vines, all located in a single parcel, and planted with all three major varieties with the oldest vines dating back to 1962. The vineyard was converted to organic viticulture starting with the 2008 vintage, which he does more out of respect for the land than something he necessarily believes results in better wine.

This year the source of Le Mont Benoit is 80% 2019 vintage with reserve wine completing the balance. The blend is certified organic 35% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay grapes. Zero dosage is added, and production is 12085 bottles.

I love Emmanuel Brochet's Champagnes, even if I don't drink them as often as I would like, due to the tiny production, and the just-released NV Extra-Brut Le Mont Benoit (L18), derived entirely from the 2018 vintage, did nothing to diminish my enthusiasm, as it's showing brilliantly. Offering up inviting aromas of crisp orchard fruit, blanched almonds, honeycomb, walnuts and fenugreek, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and precise, with a fine-boned but intensely flavored profile, complemented by a beautiful pinpoint mousse. Brochet is the master of intensity without weight, and this wine exemplifies that. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Brochet's Rose de Saignée hails from the La Motelle lieu-dit (single site) in Villers Aux Noeuds, planted in 1965, and is 100% Pinot Meunier. After a 24 hour maceration the grapes are pressed and then vinified before elevage for 11 months in barrel. A rich, gastronomic rosé, with a small production of 5-6000 bottles each year.

Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Extra-Brut Rosé de Saignée is produced from organically farmed old-vine Pinot Meunier grown in Villers Aux Noeuds that Brochet purchases from another grower. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, plums, sweet berries, peonies and orange, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a textural, enveloping profile and a broad, expansive finish. Avoiding any of the ponderousness that can sometimes mar this style of rosé, especially when the grapes get very ripe, it shows all the precision typical of this producer's style. Drink 2021 - 2026.

Disgorged in December 2021, Brochet's 2014 Extra-Brut Les Hauts Chardonnays is a magical Champagne, unwinding in the glass with scents of waxy citrus rind, fresh peach and orchard fruit mingled with subtle hints of beeswax, buttery pastry and fenugreek. As readers will remember, Brochet's 2015 Extra-Brut Les Hauts Meuniers derives from a parcel of Meunier vines (planted in 1962) at the top of his holdings on the Mont Benoit. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, confit citrus, freshly baked bread, blanched almonds and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pillowy, with an elegantly textural attack that segues into a seamless, layered mid-palate, concluding with a mordantly chalky finish. It was disgorged in December 2021. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Based on the 2016 vintage with the inclusion of 20% reserve wines, this Champagne is produced from a blend of certified organic 30% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay grapes. Showing good hold over a pale straw coloured base that has tinges of pale gold to it, is a fluffy white mousse. An exceptionally fine bead continuously flowing through its core. Intense pear, baked bread, dried honey and yeast lees aromatics flow from the glass trailed by oily toast, citrus and almond notes. Rich and complex, the palate has a light oily feel with poached pear, baked bread and oyster shell flavours mixing with plum, yeast lees and notions of hazelnut. Very dry, saline like finish with a striking freshness to the crisp acidity. Long gentle, grilled nut aftertaste.

Based on the 2016 vintage, supplemented by 20% reserve wines, Brochet's NV Extra-Brut Le Mont Benoit (L016) was disgorged in February 2020 with two grams per liter dosage. Mingling aromas of citrus oil, chamomile, green apple, white flowers and almond paste in an inviting bouquet, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and elegantly vinous, with fine depth at the core, bright acids and a long, mineral finish.

The NV Extra Brut Le Mont Benoit 1er Cru is terrific. Dried flowers, almonds, dried pears and chamomile are some of the many notes that flesh out. Ample, broad and creamy, with plenty of depth from the red grapes that make up most of the blend, the Mont Benoit is terrific today. Specifically, the Mont Benoit is rich and vinous on the palate, yet also remains wonderfully light on its feet. Don't miss it.

Pale golden straw. Lively citrus zest and lime aromas are complemented by white flowers and chalk, and a hint of yeast emerges with aeration. Racy, precise and nicely concentrated, offering zingy lemon and orange flavors; strikes me as more lemony and crisp than the Nature. Review Summary: Gently spritzy and airy in it’s feel this a Prosecco with no shortage of flavour.

The Detailed review: During the 1950’s, Remigio and Amedio Boron purchased a moderate size plot of land near the commune of Pramaggiore, which in the late 1960’s became known as the ‘Lison’ DOC – one of the more unique DOCs as it crosses over both the Veneto (to the west) and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (to the southeast) and in turn, as a region, grows a wide gamut of grape varieties. In their early years the winery, like many in the region, produced their Lison Classico DOCG made from the Friulano grape, along with typical styles of sparkling wines. These days, 3rd generation family members, Sabrina, Andrea, and Roberto, combined new technology with their wine making experience and grow a careful selection of grapes that work in harmony with their land such as Lison Classico (Friulano), Refosco del Peduncolo and Prosecco. As a category, it will come as no surprise that Prosecco is the most widely consumed sparkling wine on the planet. Many styles these days are made in the ‘spumante’ style offering heavily carbonated bubbles, whereas Familia Boron’s Prosecco is made in the more traditional frizzante style. Made entirely from Glera, this semi-sparkling wine carries a finer bead (due to its lower atmospheric pressure).
A light frothy mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has a delicate fine bead flowing through it. Aromas of pear and ripe apples mix with some lees and subtle lemon sherbet like notes. Delicious pear and apple fruits are delivered with ample concentration and carry an airy feel. Some sherbet and citrus characters linger underneath. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a nicely formed conclusion that shows no shortage of flavour.

In our opinion, the best Sparkling reds are made entirely from Shiraz, however, winemakers often choose to experiment, with a variety of grapes. At Fox Creek, they have chosen to add Cabernet Franc to the blend, which has tended to dry the wine out too much, and move it out of style – but that’s a personal observation some might like to challenge.Opaque crimson black colour with excellent deep mauve mousse. The nose is a little subdued, with aroma of blackberry, liquorice and raspberry. Generous palate flavours but quite dry, with raspberry, blackberry and liquorice dominant. Fine dry tannins, followed by long liquorice spice aftertaste. Cellar 4-5 years

Blumond: the eye-popping neon blue Sparkling Sensation, finally available in Australia!

Blumond - a mix of blue curacao, peach and prosecco – is the world’s first blue wine. Having had considerable success in China and the United States (much to the chagrin of traditional Italian winemakers), it's now available in Australia! Despite being disparaged in his homeland, Matteo Saraceni, a member of the family behind Fratelli Saraceni, comments "Anglo-Saxon drinkers are more open to innovation and particular twists than Italians, they like to experiment. They love celebrating key events and have a soft spot for wedding concept."

Produced from the Glera grapes, the same variety used to make Prosecco, after secondary fermentation according to the Charmat method, a hint of sweet peach flavouring is added to create a distinctively fruity taste.

Pours a luminous aqua blue colour with a very fine bead that shows good persistence. Gentle peach, tropical fruit, citrus-confectionary and cough syrup like notes emerge on the nose. Fresh and vibrant the palate has fruity flavours of peaches, sweet grapey characters and tropical fruits. Refreshing finish with lively acidity and an aftertaste of sweet grapey flavours and tropical fruits. The girls will love it!

A 100% Chardonnay Cuvee sourced from the Premier Cru district of Côte des Blancs. Pours with a generous frothy white mousse that shows good hold. A pale straw coloured base wine with pale gold edges is threaded by a steady stream of very fine, tiny bubbles. Rich aromatics of baked bread, yeast lees and brioche fill the nostrils followed by traces of citrus and oily toast characters. Very rich and full in the mouth with an almost creamy like textural feel, flavours of yeasty baked bread and oily toast like characters fill the palate over traces of roasted almond with a refreshing crisp, citrus infused finish. Excellent concentration and length with a long aftertaste of yeast lees, baked bread, oily toast like characters, faint almond and citrus.

The Frerejean-Tattinger brothers have a long family history in the Champagne region which inspired them to create their own Premier Cru house. Their non vintage Brut is a blend of 50% Chardonnay sourced from the Cote des Blancs, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier both sourced from vineyards in the Grauves. It is aged for 5 years before disgorgement. A very buoyant lacy white mousse shows good hold over a pale straw coloured base with pale gold edges. An exceptionally fine bead of bubbles shows excellent persistence. Showing plenty of potency the nose throws up rich aromatics of baked bread and yeast lees which dominate over lightly honeyed cashew, a subtle toastiness and citrus. Full in body this powerful, richly styled Champagne serves up mouthfilling flavours of baked bread, dried honey, yeast lees and lightly oiled toast. Airy, creamy like textural presence with notions of citrus and cashew also evident. Dry mouth watering finish with crisp acidity and a lingering aftertaste of oily baked bread, toast, yeast lees, cashew and subtle citrusy dried honey.

Radenti is a premium sparkling wine from the East Coast of Tasmania, known for its quality and numerous awards. Celebrating 30 years of production, Radenti is one of Australia's few grower-producer sparkling wines, with fruit sourced from a single vineyard dedicated to traditional method sparkling wine.
Radenti Grand Vintage 2016, following the award-winning 2011 and R3 Radenti sparklings, is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. The fruit is grown on a cooler part of the estate, 5 kilometers west of the main Freycinet vineyards, ensuring delicate flavors through slow ripening. The wine gains complexity from long aging on lees, with 5 years and 9 months in the tank. Ready to drink now, it will continue to develop over the next 5 to 10 years.

60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. Five years and nine months on lees. Lovely wine, though not a huge fan of the label design.
Almond meal, salt, lemon zest, honeyed florals, tangerine, butter etc. Lively wine, with lemon oil, distinctly saline, some ginger, fine bubbles, and a nutty chalky finish of great length. Complex and spicy. Terrific. Drink 2024 - 2029+

Geoff and Susan Bull founded Freycinet Vineyard in 1979 on Tasmania's East Coast, near the Freycinet Peninsula. This area, named after French explorer Louis de Freycinet, is at latitude 42 degrees. The 15-hectare vineyard is family-owned, and all the wines are made exclusively from grapes grown, produced, and bottled on the estate. The vineyard benefits from a warm and sheltered location in Tasmania's otherwise cool climate, allowing for the careful cultivation of moderate yields of fully ripe and healthy grapes. Radenti R3 is a multi vintage blend of three vintages (40% 2012, 44% 2013 16% 2014) with overall blend proportions at 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. Further complexity is gained through long elevage in tank on lees and a further 7 years of maturation in bottle before being disgorged.

    Other Reviews....
The R3 is drawn from three vintages (44% '13, 40% ’22 and 16% ’14), with an overall blend of 70/30% chardonnay/pinot noir. The multi-vintage approach provides an expansive aromatic profile of apple, oatmeal, soft spice and expressive autolysis notes. Fine, consistent bubbles and impressive fruit stretch taut over a canvas of abundant acid drive and a long, mealy finish. Very impressive. Drink 2022 - 2030.

If you’re looking to spend $65 on a bottle of sparkling wine, then this is a fine choice, and money well spent. It’s made using a 70/30 blend of chardonnay/pinot noir but more to the point, it’s a blend of three vintages – 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Beautiful intensity and indeed complexity here. Honey, stonefruit, nuts and cooked apples, with cream, toast and lees laid on. It’s a meal, a delicious meal, in a glass, though both freshness and cut are still well maintained. The honeyed, toasty overtones of this are quite wonderful. Drink 2022 - 2025.

Made in the Veneto region in Northeast Italy from the Prosecco grape variety, this sparkling wine is presently being discovered by more and more Australian winelovers, no doubt thanks in part to its ubiquitous presence in many Italian restaurants (Prosecco is a particularly good accompaniment with Italian antipasto, though it also works well with vegetable soups or soft cheeses). The wine comes in two styles - 'frizzante' (slightly sparkling) and 'spumante' (fully sparkling), both of which are typically dry, light-bodied and softer than Champagne, with floral, stone fruit and almond-like flavours. This is an impressive example of 'spumante' Prosecco.

Georges Remy is a young, third generation vigneron crafting exciting Champagnes from his base in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. While his formative years following wine study were spent in Bordeaux, upon returning to his home and making some notable Bouzy Rouge (still red wine), Georges now produces a range of Champagnes from vineyards predominantly located in Bouzy, with a small part in Tauxieres. The dark clay soils here are rich in silica and gypsum, and produces wines with enormous power and complexity. Their vineyards have been certified organic since 2015, and while not prescriptive, Georges does use herbal treatments as well as some biodynamic preparations to minimize the use of sulphites following vinification. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in barrel and after aging on its lees bottling takes place following the lunar cycles.

As the name suggests, Les Quatre Terroirs hails from four terroirs spread across the Grand Cru villages of Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Louvois, along with the Premier Cru village Tauxieres. The assemblage is 77% Pinot Noir, and 23% Chardonnay drawn from 94% 2019 vintage and 6% 2018.

An intriguing sparkling made from kiwi fruit. Excellent white mousse, with fine profuse bead with good persistence. Brilliant straw colour. The nose is delicate with subtle yeast autolysis note, followed by a hint of spice and a trace of Kiwi fruit. The palate is the challenge for this wine, since it relies purely on the base material from one batch of kiwi fruit which makes layering complexity difficult to achieve – but that is the challenge facing future vintages. There is just a touch of residual sweetness, some spicy dusty kiwi fruit flavours emerge, with a slightly furry end palate sensation. A very interesting style, which would be ideal over a platter of tropical fruit.

French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.

The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
