    $815.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Geoff and Susan Bull founded Freycinet Vineyard in 1979 on Tasmania's East Coast, near the Freycinet Peninsula. This area, named after French explorer Louis de Freycinet, is at latitude 42 degrees. The 15-hectare vineyard is family-owned, and all the wines are made exclusively from grapes grown, produced, and bottled on the estate. The vineyard benefits from a warm and sheltered location in Tasmania's otherwise cool climate, allowing for the careful cultivation of moderate yields of fully ripe and healthy grapes. Radenti R3 is a multi vintage blend of three vintages (40% 2012, 44% 2013 16% 2014) with overall blend proportions at 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. Further complexity is gained through long elevage in tank on lees and a further 7 years of maturation in bottle before being disgorged.

    Other Reviews....
The R3 is drawn from three vintages (44% '13, 40% ’22 and 16% ’14), with an overall blend of 70/30% chardonnay/pinot noir. The multi-vintage approach provides an expansive aromatic profile of apple, oatmeal, soft spice and expressive autolysis notes. Fine, consistent bubbles and impressive fruit stretch taut over a canvas of abundant acid drive and a long, mealy finish. Very impressive. Drink 2022 - 2030.

If you’re looking to spend $65 on a bottle of sparkling wine, then this is a fine choice, and money well spent. It’s made using a 70/30 blend of chardonnay/pinot noir but more to the point, it’s a blend of three vintages – 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Beautiful intensity and indeed complexity here. Honey, stonefruit, nuts and cooked apples, with cream, toast and lees laid on. It’s a meal, a delicious meal, in a glass, though both freshness and cut are still well maintained. The honeyed, toasty overtones of this are quite wonderful. Drink 2022 - 2025.

From the Conegliano Valdobbiadene zone. Pours nicely with a creamy white mousse that dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base wine with a slight tinge of gold to the edges. A very finely threaded bead shows excellent persistence. Attractively scented nose with red apple and pear aromas intermingling with hints of baked bread followed by some citrus and a trace of sherbet. Refreshing flavours of red apples, pears and citrus fill the mouth underpinned by traces of baked characters and light sherbet. Dry fresh finish with crisp acidity and a light airy mouthfeel. Made in the Veneto region in Northeast Italy from the Prosecco grape variety, this sparkling wine is presently being discovered by more and more Australian winelovers, no doubt thanks in part to its ubiquitous presence in many Italian restaurants (Prosecco is a particularly good accompaniment with Italian antipasto, though it also works well with vegetable soups or soft cheeses). The wine comes in two styles - 'frizzante' (slightly sparkling) and 'spumante' (fully sparkling), both of which are typically dry, light-bodied and softer than Champagne, with floral, stone fruit and almond-like flavours. This is an impressive example of 'spumante' Prosecco.

Georges Remy is a young, third generation vigneron crafting exciting Champagnes from his base in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. While his formative years following wine study were spent in Bordeaux, upon returning to his home and making some notable Bouzy Rouge (still red wine), Georges now produces a range of Champagnes from vineyards predominantly located in Bouzy, with a small part in Tauxieres. The dark clay soils here are rich in silica and gypsum, and produces wines with enormous power and complexity. Their vineyards have been certified organic since 2015, and while not prescriptive, Georges does use herbal treatments as well as some biodynamic preparations to minimize the use of sulphites following vinification. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in barrel and after aging on its lees bottling takes place following the lunar cycles.

As the name suggests, Les Quatre Terroirs hails from four terroirs spread across the Grand Cru villages of Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Louvois, along with the Premier Cru village Tauxieres. The assemblage is 77% Pinot Noir, and 23% Chardonnay drawn from 94% 2019 vintage and 6% 2018.

Les Muits is made from a single parcel of 100% Chardonnay from the Premier Cru village of Tauxieres. While it's rare to find Chardonnay planted here, these specific vines are from a portion of the parcel which sits at the top of the hill planted over a bedrock of pure chalk. Vines here face south-east, and the parcel is made up of two massale selection plantings from 1971 and 1973. Production is a tiny 603 bottles.

An intriguing sparkling made from kiwi fruit. Excellent white mousse, with fine profuse bead with good persistence. Brilliant straw colour. The nose is delicate with subtle yeast autolysis note, followed by a hint of spice and a trace of Kiwi fruit. The palate is the challenge for this wine, since it relies purely on the base material from one batch of kiwi fruit which makes layering complexity difficult to achieve – but that is the challenge facing future vintages. There is just a touch of residual sweetness, some spicy dusty kiwi fruit flavours emerge, with a slightly furry end palate sensation. A very interesting style, which would be ideal over a platter of tropical fruit.

Champagne Guiborat is based in the grand cru village of Cramant, right in the heart of the Cote de Blancs. Much of their vineyards are planted in the deep chalk soils of Cramant and Chouilly grand crus, along with a parcel in the Marne near Epernay where they have some Pinot Meunier. While they own 8 hectares of vineyards, three quarters of their production is sold off to Laurent-Perrier, keeping only the best parcels for their own label.

Tethys is named after the Greek goddess of water and nursing, and the ancient sea in the Mesozic era that covered what is now known as Champagne. This cuvee presents as the most approachable in their range, consisting of 100% Chardonnay mostly from younger vines planted in 2005 in the Chouilly vineyard of 'Les Caures', with further old vine parcels included from Le Mont Aigu (Chouilly), Les Bergieres (Cramant), and Les Briquettes (Oiry). Soils in each of these parcels are predominantly homogeneous chalk with the difference between each down to the thickness of the chalk and the depth of the topsoil. Each vineyard is vinified separately in stainless steel, before 7 months on lees before bottling, and a further 32 months ageing before being disgorged with an extremely low 2.5g/L dosage.

Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's fine-boned, pure and layered, concluding with a saline finish. It's the usual blend of Chouilly, Cramant and Oiry. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Harvest Wines are an Australian grower cooperative from the Northern Adelaide Hills. They are committed to purchasing 100% of fruit from the local growers within 5km of their winery in Gumeracha, despite any difficult conditions that Mother Nature can throw at them. This means that in the years where there may be a bush fire, frost or reduced yields the growers will always have an income to invest in the following year.

This doesn't mean that the wine is 2nd rate, any fruit that is not up to scratch is distilled and used in Applewood's range of spirits and liqueurs.

Notes from the winery, Unico Zelo:
A refreshingly dry style of sparkling wine that shows all the generosity and elegance that Chardonnay is known for, whilst giving you a clean and cut finish, driving shear drinkability. “Grown at the most exposed and elevated position in Birdwood, Northern Adelaide Hills - this fruit reaches a ripeness with a spritely acidity that lends itself incredibly well to a Sparkling style of wine - this 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs” – Brendan & Laura Carter

100% Chardonnay, four years on lees, disgorged September 2018 and not yet labelled.
Lovely melon and citrus fruit on the nose, bit of yogurt and cream. Smoky and compact, lots of citrus and zestiness on the mid palate – really rich citrus, like poached lemon and orange peel and key lime pie topped with oat meal. Crunchy with a fantastically geometric, firm finish. No nonsense. Good stuff. Drink 2020 – 2025.

Disgorged in December 2017 with eight grams per liter dosage, the 2014 Brut Rosé is showing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of minty red apples, raspberries and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a pretty core of fruit, a youthfully frothy mousse and racy but ripe acids, concluding with a flavorful and penetrating finish. Drink 2019 - 2029.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (May 2020)

English sparkling wine is on the rise and rise, despite the long history of production there. English fizz, for me, is distinct for its incredible acid profile, something that distinguishes it from just about anywhere else in the world – you know it when you feel it. This wine sees some barrel fermentation, which mitigates the acidity in some sense, but it is still there. The wine also contains a splash of the unusual mutation variety, pinot precoce, a weird cousin of pinot noir.
Very pale pink in glass, the bouquet is likewise ‘pale’ with soft strawberry, raspberry scents, overlay of talc, a whiff of red apple and some faint citrus. The palate is assertive in its chalky, sherbetty acidity, a belt that runs through lightly juicy red berry fruit flavours and zings the wine long and refreshing, to an almost pin-point-mouth-watering conclusion. It’s a very precise feeling wine, barely showing fruitiness, all about the elemental, mineral-esque charm. Very good wine here, bound up and full of energy and freshness. Yep, worth the visit. Drink 2018 - 2026.

This fine English sparkling is made from 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 19% Pinot Meunier and 1% Pinot Gris and spent a minimum of 18 months ageing on its lees. A fine white mousse dissipates to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has faint tinges of gold to the edges and a very fine, persistent bead flowing through it. Ripe pear and tropical fruit aromas intermix with apple, yeast lees and brioche. Satiny flavours of pear and apple are backed by bready yeast lees characters, citrus and light almond. Dry chalk tinged finish with crisp acidity giving it a fresh sculptured feel. Refined medium to long aftertaste.

Pours with a very frothy mousse which dissipates to reveal a very pale straw base that’s threaded by exceptionally tiny and persistent bubbles. Aromas of citrus and pear meld into some light toast, baked apple and subtle lees notes. Fruity apple and pear flavours reside over a back drop of baked bread and sherbet. Henriet-Bazin origins date back 5 generations to two families both deeply rooted in Champagne. The Bazin family were grape growers from the village of Verzenay whilst the Henriet family specialised in Champagne production. It was in the late 19th century that the two families united through marriage, and today the estate is run by Marie-Noëlle Henriet-Rainon, and they produce a range of outstanding champagnes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.
Having always wanted a Grand Cru vintage wine in the range, Marie-Noëlle had her wish granted in their crafting of the Eusebe cuvee. The combination of Chardonnay from Verzenay, and Pinot Noir from Verzy and Verzenay shows great balance and elegance. The mix can change, but it will always be Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with this 2012 a mix of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay that spent 72 months on lees.
Showing excellent hold over a pale straw to pale gold coloured base is a fine satiny mousse. A nibble stream of tiny bubbles flows through its core. The nose is a combination of power and complexity, superb aromatics of yeast lees, baked bread and subtle citrus soar out of the glass followed by oily toast like notes, cashew and subtle brioche. Rich and concentrated yet also stimulating, the palate features baked bread, oily toast like characters and yeast lees over some citrus and roasted almonds. Fullish mouthfeel with a dry chalk tinged finish complimented by crisp acidity. Long rich, textured conclusion.

Champagne Hugues Godmé are based in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay in the northern Montagne de Reims, where they farm a total of 7.6 hectares of vines spread across four villages. Their Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru village pair of Verzenay and Verzy, while much of their Chardonnay is in Villers Marmery, and the Pinot Meunier a touch west in Ville-Dommange. Hugues has long been concerned with the health of his vineyards (along with himself), and made the transition to organic farming in 2006 with certification coming in 2013, followed a year later with biodynamic certification in 2014. Each parcel is vinified separately and dependant on the terroir will have fermentation occur in neutral oak or enamel lined cement tanks, all using native yeasts. Across the range dosage is kept very low, with many wines now bottled as brut nature (zero dosage). As to be expected with wines from Verzenay and Verzy, these Champagnes are sleek and structured, tightly coiled in their youth but with fantastic concentration of fruit.
The Reserve is a blend of 34% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Meunier that has spent 2 years on lees. A mousse overflowing with exuberance subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. An exceptionally fine bead shows great persistence. Delightful pear and strawberry aromas are complimented by yeast lees, baked bread, faint honeysuckle and delicate oily cashew like notes. The refined palate makes a satin like entry with mouth watering flavours of pear, yeast lees, citrus and baked bread melding into more subtle nuances of strawberry and roasted cashew on the back half. Airy cream tinged mouth feel finishing dry with vividly sculptured acidity and a long complex aftertaste.

Based in the grand cru village of Verzenay, Hugues Godmé tends 40 plots of vines totalling 7.6 hectares in Verzenay and Verzy (grand cru), and Villers Marmery and Villedommange (premier cru). Wine making ticks all the boxes of the new wave of Champagne producers, being certified biodynamic (since 2014), using only native yeasts, no fining or filtration, vinification in wood and ageing on lees, parcel selections, low sulfur, and low dosage levels. With all the extra care and attention that comes with being organic and biodynamic, the resultant wines are extremely well defined examples that express a unique sense of place. Each wine is intense in flavour, tightly coiled, and will age very well.

This Late Disgorged 2004 Grand Cru Vintage is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, and was disgorged with zero dosage in January 2021 after spending a whopping 14 years on lees.

Buy Sparkling Wines from around the world in Our Online Store

French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.

The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
