I believe that the 2005 DP is the best since 2002, which remains the best recent vintage and is probably only eclipsed by the amazing 100-point 1996. The 2005 is a full-bodied DP with so much richness and loads of ripe fruit such as pineapple and papaya. It has a wonderful, creamy texture and a long and intense finish. It’s a Champagne that fully satisfies but at the same time challenges you with its strength, depth and persistence on the palate.

The 2005 Dom Pérignon is lifted and precise throughout, with a classy, understated personality to match. Pear, apple, mint and white flowers are laced together in a finely-knit fabric of pure class. Two thousand five was a challenging vintage because of rot issues, especially in Pinot Noir. As a result, the 2005 Dom Pérignon is more than 60% Chardonnay, which is quite unusual. Soft, and open-knit, the 2005 is the most complete Dom Pérignon for drinking now among recent vintages. I suspect the 2005 will also have a shorter arc of life next to some of the truly epic wines that surround it. Drink 2015-2030.

The 2006 Dom Pérignon Rosé continues to show very well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of bitter orange, dried white flowers, red berries, toast and woodsmoke. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and muscular, with all the phenolic structure and depth that one would expect from a rosé that contains more than 20% still red wine, concluding with a sapid and chalky finish. As I wrote earlier this year, this is a vinous, gastronomic rosé that numbers among the decided successes of the 2006 vintage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2020)The 2006 Dom Pérignon Rosé is every bit as captivating as it was last year, maybe even more so. At times powerful, but in other moments finessed, the 2006 constantly changes in the glass, revealing a different shade of its personality with every taste. Perhaps most importantly, the 2006 seems to have gained a level of precision and pure sophistication it did not show last year, when it was quite a bit less put together. Back then, the 2006 was a wine of tremendous potential; today that potential is starting to be realized. Quite simply, the 2006 Dom Pérignon Rosé is a magical Champagne. Don’t miss it.

2004 Dom Perignon Vintage Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$795. 00Bottle$9540.00 DozenCellar: 5 - 6 Years (2018-2019)ABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkThe 2004 vintage was defined by the dry heat experienced in the Champagne region over the final weeks before harvest, contributing to wonderful ripeness in the grapes. According to Chef de Cave, Richard Geoffroy,"...growing and fruit ripening periods went by smoothly, with no difficulties - a phenomenon that we have rarely, if ever, seen before".The 2004 Dom Perignon pours well opening with a frothy white mousse that shows excellent hold. Once dissipated it reveals a base wine colour of pale straw with a very profuse and exceptionally fine bead. Nosing provides a classic, refined Champagne sniff showing excellent intensity. Aromas of baked bread, yeast lees and cashew are followed by some subtle toastiness with some citrus end notes. Elegant and refined the palate has a flavour profile of toasty baked bread and yeast lees followed by some subtle nutty hazelnut and citrus. Clean crisp dry finish but quite creamy in mouthfeel with long persistent aftertaste of toasty yeast lees, brioche and subtle hazelnut. Enjoy it as often as you can afford to!

The 2004 Dom Pérignon continues to develop beautifully. A vibrant, focused Champagne, the 2004 clearly reflects the personality of the year. Freshly cut flowers, white peaches and pears are woven together in a Champagne that impresses for its focus and energy. Chiseled saline note support the crystalline finish. I imagine the 2004 will always remain relatively bright and linear, but at the same time, each time I have tasted it over the last two years the 2004 seems to have a little more body and broader shoulders. The 2004 will appeal most to readers who find the 2002 and 2003 too exuberant. There is a lot to like in the glass.

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is the first time the estate has released a wine out of order (the 2009 was released before the 2008) but the estate loved the wine so much they felt it warranted additional aging. This is a rich, powerful wine that still shows incredible purity and elegance, with a stacked, concentrated feel on the palate. It’s rare to find such a mix of ripe, pure, concentrated fruit paired with this level of purity, focus, and precision. This is a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002. Drink 2018-2038.

JebDunnuck.comThe 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions. Drink 2020-2058.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThere's power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. Wine SpectatorThe finest release of this iconic cuvée since the 1996 vintage, the 2008 Dom Pérignon wafts from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of Meyer lemon, green apple, dried white flowers and oyster shell, with only subtle hints of the smoky, autolytic aromas that have been such a prominent signature of recent releases. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, its notable flesh and amplitude controlled by incisive acids, with a youthfully exuberant but elegant mousse and a long, beautifully delineated finish. Considering the sheer size of this cuvée, it's a remarkable achievement and a fitting release with which to conclude Richard Geoffroy's tenure as chef de cave. Given the 2008's intensity and balance, I suspect purists will be anticipating later disgorgements with lower dosage and more time on the lees with particular enthusiasm. Tasted three times, with consistent results. Drink 2018-2040.

Seven champagnes were submitted for this tasting at prices significantly higher than this great wine. 2002 Dom Perignon P2 ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews…..
The 2002 Dom Pérignon P2 is wonderfully open in its aromatics, but a bit less giving on the palate, especially next to the regular release. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and white pepper open up first, followed by hints of apricot, honey, chamomile and light tropical notes. Interestingly, the P2 is quite a bit less tropical than the original release. Chef de Caves Vincent Chaperon told me he thinks the original release shows more of a buttery character because of the combination of the ripeness of the vintage and the natural evolution of the wine post-disgorgement under crown seal, as opposed to the P2 which stayed much longer on its lees. It is hard to know if that is an exact explanation, but the reality is that the two 2002s are quite far apart stylistically. Drink 2019-2032.

Antonio Galloni – Vinous
The 2002 Dom Pérignon P2 is still a youthful wine, but it is beginning to develop appreciable complexity, wafting from the glass with notes of of iodine, warm bread, ripe orchard fruit, peach, citrus oil, smoke and peat, which in Geoffroy's words "are on the verge of aromatic over-ripeness." On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a textural, voluminous profile, pinpoint bubbles and a chalky, phenolic finish. This is a ripe and powerful Dom Pérignon that finds its closest stylistic analogy in the 1990 vintage, and it is considerably less evolved than the more tertiary 2000 P2 today. While the P2 is a bit drier and more precise on the finish than the original release, given the wine's slow evolution the difference between the two is less pronounced than it has been for any vintage since 1996. Drink 2018-2036.

I am a no-holds-barred Dom addict, but I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed with the '99 vintage, which seemed altogether too delicate, verging on outright simplicity. I have no such reservations about the 2000 vintage, which has the Dom hallmark fluid line and feline grace encouraging the rapid consumption of glass after glass. Along the way you will find notes of nectarine, cherry, brioche and cream, which build into a gloriously long and even finish. It will continue to develop in bottle for decades to come.

2010 Dom Ruinart Blanc De Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$549. 00Bottle$6588.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkThe 2010 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs is crafted solely from Grand Cru Chardonnay, with the majority, comprising 90%, cultivated in the esteemed vineyards of the Côte des Blancs, including Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Chouilly, and Cramant. The remaining 10% is sourced from the Montagne de Reims (Sillery). In their pursuit of excellence, Maison Ruinart is improving the aging process for Dom Ruinart wines, by reintroducing the traditional method of aging the wine with corks instead of metal caps. This choice also brings back a century-old practice of manually disgorging the wines. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation to add richness and is aged on lees for 9 years in bottle before being disgorged and topped with a dosage of 4g/L.

The 2010 Dom Ruinart is starting to open up nicely. There's still plenty of the intense, chalky minerality and energy the wine showed last year, but also a bit more mid-palate richness to balance things out. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, slate and white pepper are some of the many aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass. As good as the 2010 is today, I imagine it will be even better in another few years' time. As I have written previously, the 2010 Dom Ruinart is one of the most impressive Champagnes ever made here. If there is anything better, I don't think I have tasted it! Drink 2024 - 2050.

This is the first vintage of this cuvée that the house has opted to age under cork instead of crown capsule for the aging on the lees, sur latte. It pours a vibrant straw/green hue, and comes from five villages: Sillery, Avize, Cramant, Chouily, and Mesnil-sur-Oger. The 2010 Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc De Blancs Extra Brut was raised, as it always is, without the use of oak, and saw 3 grams per liter of dosage. Highly expressive on opening, it’s layered with aromas of fresh baked croissant, key lime, melon, and honeysuckle. Rounded and long on the palate, it’s elegant and refined within its medium frame and takes on a remarkable silky chalk texture. Floral all the way through the finish, with long-lasting notes of lemon curd, it retains a springy freshness that is true to the house style but is quite elevated and impeccably well-balanced with layered depth. This would be a great addition to the cellar. Drink 2025-2045. Disgorged in June of 2022.

An inky opaque purple, the flavours move through liquorice, chocolate mud cake, cloves, mocha and coffee beans. This is bright, ripe and rich, and of course, wonderfully exuberant. Les Prémices is the first new cuvée from this Domaine for over twenty years and hails from 3.5 hectares of vines in Trigny (northwest of Reims) in the Massif de Saint Thierry area. Reflecting what is planted in the vineyards, Les Prémices is an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier drawn from mature vines (on average, 40 years old) rooted in clay, sand and sandstone, over chalk bedrock—a soil typical of the Massif de St. Thierry. The main difference between this wine and others in the Egly portfolio is here the wine was fermented and aged exclusively in tank, and spent 36 months on lees and was disgorged with two grams per litre.

Francis Egly has produced another profound Champagne with the 2013 Brut Grand Cru Millésime. If the monumental 2008 stands out for its power, structure and intensity, the 2013 is distinguished by its harmony, finesse and completeness; both vintages are very great wines but thus quite different in style. Vinification is carried out entirely in barrel before spending four years in the cellar prior to the disgorgement at extra brut levels of approximately 2g/L.

A new cuvée from Egly makes its debut in the NV Brut Vignes de Bisseuil, a blend of 70% Chardonnay and the balance equal parts Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, all vinified in oak. This first release, disgorged in March 2021 with three grams dosage, is based on the 2016 vintage. Offering up aromas of crisp orchard fruit, lemon oil, mint, white flowers and almonds, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and chiseled, its enveloping core of fruit girdled by bright acids and chalky structure. Concluding with a long, saline finish, it's a superb addition to the range that nips at the heels of Egly's NV Brut Grand Cru. Drink 2021 - 2035.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)The NV (2016) Les Vignes de Bisseuil races out of the glass, showing terrific energy and cut. White flowers, pear, mint, white pepper and lemon peel give the 2016 notable brightness to complement its mid-weight, focused personality. All the elements come together so well in this beautifully expressive Champagne, another new addition to the range. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: July, 2021. Drink 2022-2032.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis release of the NV Champagne Vignes De Bisseuil is based on 2019 but also includes 2018 and 2017. In the glass it pours a bright silver straw hue and offers savory, ripe aromas of pear, melon rind, fresh earth, and briny salinity, with bold character and ample ripeness. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a good deal of intensity and maybe even more fruity on the palate. It’s a savory wine with lovely richness, a refined mousse, and a long finish. Drink it over the coming 15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in early 2022, Egly's NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is now bottled in dark glass, protecting it from light strike. Bursting with aromas of pear, tangerine, cherries and toasted almonds, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and vinous, with racy acids and a long, sapid finish. This brilliant, characterful wine is worth a special effort to seek out. Drink 2022 - 2035.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2022)The NV Brut Rosé Grand Cru is distinguished, among other things, by the five years it spent on its lees, which is quite long for Rosé Champagne. Bright and beautifully sculpted, the Rosé sizzles with tension and yet it also possesses a sense of inner suaveness that is impossible to miss. This is such a classy wine.

Antonio Galloni - VinousOpulent aromas and flavors of smoky grilled nut and toasted brioche, baked apricot and raspberry fruit, pastry cream and crystallized honey show in this expressive rosé Champagne, yet the spine of rapierlike acidity and the satiny mousse are finely integrated, lending an elegance to the full-throttle flavor profile.

This bottle of the 2009 Brut Grand Cru Millésime was disgorged in July 2018 after 96 months on the lees, and it's already showing brilliantly, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of smoky red berries, green apple, oyster shell and English walnuts, with a faint hint of fino sherry on the upper register. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with searing concentration, a beautifully refined mousse, brisk acids and a long, indeed seemingly endless, finish. This thrilling vintage Champagne exemplifies the intensity and power without the weight that Egly routinely achieves and testifies to his status as one of the region's very best producers. Drink 2018 - 2035.

2012 Egly-Ouriet Brut Vintage Champagne Grand CruChampagne, FRANCE$650. 00Bottle$7800.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Francis Egly's 2012 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is predictably brilliant; but it's also a serious, structured wine that will need time to unwind. Mingling notes of citrus oil, pear and stone fruit with hints of freshly baked bread, praline and baking spices, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with huge concentration and a taut, layered core. Built around a racy spine of acidity and prodigious reserves of chalky extract, it's long, precise, and remarkably fine-boned and elegant for such a powerful wine. Make no mistake, this is one of the wines of the vintage, but—like the 2008—it will demand patience. With more age on cork, however, I wouldn't be surprised if it began to close in on a three-digit score. Drink 2026 - 2050.

Disgorged in July 2020 with only one gram per liter dosage, Francis Egly's 2011 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is a brilliant wine from a frequently dismissed vintage. Unfurling in the glass with scents of golden orchard fruit, buttery pastry, dried mango, clear honey and praline, it's full-bodied, muscular and vinous, with a broad, textural attack that segues into a deep, concentrated core. Built around bright acids and complemented by a pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, sapid finish. In a blind tasting, this is one of a small handful of wines that would be unrecognizable as 2011s, a year that was evidently an acid test for Champenois viticulturists.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (May 2021)The 2011 Brut Millésime Grand Cru is a very pretty wine, especially within the context of the year. Bright floral notes meld into hints of lemon confit, tangerine oil, dried flowers, sage and pastry. There is terrific freshness to the 2011, although not quite the dimension of the very best years. Even so, this is very clearly one of the finest 2011s readers will come across. I would not push my luck on aging, but there is so much to like and admire here. Francis Egly and his team clearly got the very best out of the year.

Egly-Ouriet Les Premices Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $199.00$190. 00Bottle$2280.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkThe Ambonnay based Egly-Ouriet are a reference point for grower producers in Champagne, known for their impeccable vineyard management and fastidious winemaking skills.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2022)A new wine in the Egly range, the NV Brut Les Prémices is a Chardonnay/Pinot Noir/Meunier blend from Trigny, all 2016 vintage. The NV Brut Les Vignes de Vrigny 1er Cru is gorgeous in the way it balances the natural depth of Meunier with real energy and vibrancy. Antonio Galloni - VinousThe latest rendition of Egly's NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny was disgorged in July 2019 with two grams per liter dosage after 36 months on the lees. Offering up a lovely bouquet of golden orchard fruit, dried white flowers, rock salt and a subtle touch of praline, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and incisive, with a deep core of racy but mature fruit, a pinpoint mousse and a penetrating finish. From a parcel of 50-year-old vines in Vrigny inherited by Francis Egly's wife, this is a beautifully elegant wine that makes for a fine introduction to the house style.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2022)The NV Champagne V.P. stands for Vieille Prolongée, because it is aged longer, seeing 7 years on the lees before disgorgement. A blend 70% Pinot and the rest Chardonnay, based on 2016 and with reserve wine from 2015 and 2014, they made this blend in 2017. Offering wonderfully pure aromas of cherry liqueur, eau de vie, fresh flowers, and crushed rocks, it’s full-bodied on the palate and has broad shoulders but retains a very focused and well-defined feel, with outstanding concentration and purity, a fantastically long finish, and a remarkably youthful feel. It’s beautiful now but has the potential for a lot of longevity and is going to be wonderful to check in on.

I love Emmanuel Brochet's Champagnes, even if I don't drink them as often as I would like, due to the tiny production, and the just-released NV Extra-Brut Le Mont Benoit (L18), derived entirely from the 2018 vintage, did nothing to diminish my enthusiasm, as it's showing brilliantly. Offering up inviting aromas of crisp orchard fruit, blanched almonds, honeycomb, walnuts and fenugreek, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and precise, with a fine-boned but intensely flavored profile, complemented by a beautiful pinpoint mousse. The vineyard was converted to organic viticulture starting with the 2008 vintage, which he does more out of respect for the land than something he necessarily believes results in better wine.
Brochet's Rose de Saignée hails from the La Motelle lieu-dit (single site) in Villers Aux Noeuds, planted in 1965, and is 100% Pinot Meunier. After a 24 hour maceration the grapes are pressed and then vinified before elevage for 11 months in barrel. A rich, gastronomic rosé, with a small production of 5-6000 bottles each year.
Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.

The 2019 Extra-Brut Rosé de Saignée is produced from organically farmed old-vine Pinot Meunier grown in Villers Aux Noeuds that Brochet purchases from another grower. Bursting with aromas of raspberries, plums, sweet berries, peonies and orange, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a textural, enveloping profile and a broad, expansive finish. Avoiding any of the ponderousness that can sometimes mar this style of rosé, especially when the grapes get very ripe, it shows all the precision typical of this producer's style. Drink 2021 - 2026.

As readers will remember, Brochet's 2015 Extra-Brut Les Hauts Meuniers derives from a parcel of Meunier vines (planted in 1962) at the top of his holdings on the Mont Benoit. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, confit citrus, freshly baked bread, blanched almonds and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pillowy, with an elegantly textural attack that segues into a seamless, layered mid-palate, concluding with a mordantly chalky finish. It was disgorged in December 2021. Drink 2022 - 2040.

Richer and more textural than its Meunier counterpart, Brochet's 2012 Extra-Brut Les Hauts Chardonnays unwinds in the glass with scents of warm pastry, pear, citrus oil, nutmeg and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with notably chalky structuring extract and a tangy spine from acidity, it's elegantly fleshy and mouthwateringly saline, concluding with a bracing, bone-dry finish.

French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.
The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
