    Aged on lees for 9 years this excellent vintage Champagne is comprised of 40% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 27% Pinot Meunier grapes sourced from predominately (73%) Grand Cru and Premier Crus.
    A frothy white mousse forms over a pale straw/pale gold coloured base that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Pronounced aromatics of pear and yeast lees meld into brioche, citrus, oily toast like notes, dried honey and almond. The rich, powerful palate is caressed with baked bread, pear, yeast lees and citrus flavours which have a full creamy like feel. Elements of roasted almonds, subtle oily cashew and dried honey characters chime in on the dry, crisp finish. Long, complex aftertaste.
    Drink over the next 6-8 years.

    The 2008 Brut Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart is an electric, nervy Champagne that very much reflects the style of the year. Crushed rocks, mint, spice, dried herbs, hazelnut, lemon peel and marzipan are all beautifully laced together. The 2008 is just entering its first plateau of maturity, making it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next two decades, possibly more. The blend id 60% Pinot Noir (from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay) and 40% Chardonnay (from Mesnil, Chouilly and Cramant). It's a terrific effort, although I must add that a recent visit made it pretty clear that even better things lie ahead. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Drink 2023-2038.

Full-bodied, it’s supple in texture, with a rounded mousse, and has a long-lasting, mouthwatering finish. Exceptionally well-balanced, it comes together seamlessly on the finish.     Categorically the finest Extra Brut ever conceived, this is a cuvee of laser line and immortal structure that rejoices in the lightning energy of 2008 and the exacting precision engineering that is Billecart. A glowing, medium straw hue is a dazzling prelude to its scintillating purity and drive, cut with magnificent acid line and high-tensile chalk structure. The distinguished, north-east facing slopes of Verzy and Verzenay take a delightfully fragrant and pure lead, presenting white cherry and strawberry hull that ring out in clear peals like church bells. Age has done nothing to evolve its pitch-perfect high notes, lending just the most subtle nuance of fresh almond. A cuvée to age for another 20 years at least – and it will live effortlessly for 50. In sheer, breathtaking purity, monumental chalk minerality, endless longevity – not to mention ludicrous affordability – Extra Brut 2008 is one of the champagne buys of the decade.

    A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, and as such is already extremely approachable. The flavour spectrum encompasses toast, oyster shell, citrus, cream and a flinty, mineral depth. There’s supreme balance and elegance here, combined with a hidden underlying power that will continue to emerge and broaden with time. The finish is dry and long.

Full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's a textural, racy, penetrating wine endowed with considerable cut and concentration.     The 2008 Brut Blanc de Blancs Louis Salmon (formerly the vintage Blanc de Blancs) and named after the maison’s first cellar master, is fabulous. Rich and ample, the 2008 is beautifully resonant in the glass. It offers up an enticing mélange of lemon confit, marzipan, dried flowers and spice. It’s a terrific 2008, especially for readers looking for a relatively affordable option to some of the super high-flyers in this celebrated vintage. The blend is 40% Chouilly, 33% Cramant, 20% Mesnil and 7% Avize, done 1/3rd in oak and 2/3rds in steel. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2020. Drink 2024-2038.

    100% Chardonnay from the grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs: 40% Chouilly, 33% Cramant, 20% Mesnil-sur-Oger, 7% Avize with 33% of the base wines vinified at low temperature in oak casks that are 15 years old on average. It was disgorged in May 2021 with a dosage of 7 g/l after 11 years' ageing on lees. (Information given on the back label.)
    Surprisingly meaty and broad for a Blanc de Blancs – a very serious, mature wine with real savour – a white burgundy sort of Blanc de Blancs. Tastes pretty dry – a food wine? Certainly a champagne connoisseur's wine… Really opens out on the finish.

    Disgorged in November 2020 with two grams per liter dosage, Billecart-Salmon's newly released 2006 Brut Le Clos Saint-Hilaire is showing well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, dried fruits, walnuts, bee pollen and spices. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, it's a concentrated, muscular young wine, allying maturing flavors with broad structural shoulders and racy acids and concluding with a long, resonant and slightly mordant finish. From a parcel planted in 1964 and vinified entirely in oak, this is a powerful Champagne of considerable presence that needs some more time on cork to unwind and round out. Drink 2023 - 2036.

    Although it was disgorged in November 2020, Mathieu Roland Billecart has been keen to delay the release. The ageing post disgorgement is just as important as that before it and sometimes overlooked, he maintains. The wine has an attractive Welsh gold colour, a lively and persistent mousse, and seductive aromas of nectarine, greengage and Victoria plum. I even noted a hint of spearmint. The palate maintains a youthful nervosité; behind that generous fruit, including red fruit (cherry mainly), hints of brioche and hazelnut and then an authoritative finish. Great potential.     Rich nose, yeasty and so alive. The oak shows even more as the wine opens up, giving a cedar spice. Such underlying depth and richness with such a surprising mineral and acidic backbone with a verbena note, mandarin – the most citric of the lot. There is a subtler nuttiness here that is almost creamy, like a Belgian chocolate, almost oily on the finish yet with such direction. Drink 2025 – 2045.

    An exuberant mousse holds well over a pale straw, pale gold tinged base that’s threaded by an ultra fine and very persistent bead. Heady baked bread and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with hints of citrus and pear fruits also present. Subtle oily toast and roasted almond like notes ensue. Racy yeasty baked bread and citrus flavours are both sculptured and tense. Oily toast like characters, chalky oyster shell and roasted almond characters fill out on the back half. Finishes very dry and crisp with a chiselled feel to the long aftertaste.
    Drink over the next 3-4 years.

From eight grands crus in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, Billecart-Salmon’s new cuvée is a blend of the most exceptional wines from the 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2012 vintages comprising 92% Pinot Noir and 4% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.     This new wine was made to ‘capture the essence of Billecart-Salmon', according to seventh generation owner Mathieu Roland-Billecart. From 92% Pinot Noir, 4% Chardonnay and 4% Pinot Meunier, this is a blend of eight grands crus from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, including the 1ha Pinot Noir vineyard of Le Clos St-Hilaire in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Exceptional reserve wines from 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2012 were vinified half in steel and half in old oak casks, with a dosage of 4.5g/l, making it an extra brut style. It has a hugely expressive nose of red apple, nougat and citrus, with the hallmark ‘old rose’ fragrance from Clos St-Hilaire. There's an elegant mousse with very fine, fast-streaming bubbles and powerful, juicy flavours of baking spices, praline, and tart apples. A smoky mineral note and bright acidity offer real refreshment through the long finish, and while drinking beautifully now, it has the structure to last and will improve with age. To mark the year of the house’s founding, just 1,818 magnums were made, along with 18 jeroboams. Drinking Window 2018 - 2035.

    Created in 1988 as a tribute to the co-founder Elisabeth Salmon, this cuvee is an elegant and refined rosé composed of 55% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, along with 45% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. Less than 10% of the Pinot Noir is vinified as a red wine, with these old vine grapes sourced from the south facing slopes of the Valofroy vineyard located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.     Disgorged with seven grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon is one of the finest wines I've tasted from Billecart in recent years. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, mandarin oil, warm bread, red berries and petals, it's full-bodied, deep and vinous, with lovely mid-palate amplitude, terrific concentration and bright girdling acids. In what is quite a tightly wound vintage and from a house whose style is rather understated, this is a dramatic, fleshy wine that concludes with a long, flavorful finish. Drink 2022 - 2048.

Blend of 55% pinot noir from six villages (Mareuil sur Ay, Ay, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Verzy) and 45% chardonnay from three Grand Crus (Mesnil sur Oger, Cramant and Chouilly). 9% of the blend is red wine from a parcel in the village of Mareuil sur Ay.     The 2008 Brut Rosé Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon explodes from the glass with a mesmerizing array of aromas, flavors and textures. Blood orange, cinnamon, mint and dried flowers. The 2008 is incredibly young, but it is also incredibly tempting. Patience will be rewarded. In the meantime, readers might enjoy adding a few bottles of the stellar 2007 to their cellars, as the nervy, taut 2008 needs time. The 2008 is 55% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Verzy, Verzenay and Mareuil) and 45% Chardonnay (from Chouilly, Avize and Cramant), with 9% still wine from Mareuil. It is the first vintage that includes a portion of wines (17%) done in barrel and the first vintage in which the magnums were aged on the cork rather than on crown seal. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.     A blend of 65% Pinot Noir consisting of Premier and Grand Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallee de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs. Significantly, this has nine years ageing on its lees (longer than some Prestige Cuvees), the 2008 was first released onto the global market back in March 2019. With an Extra Brut dosage of 4g/l, this is a highly expressive, confident and convincing interpretation of the vintage. Right now, it is youthfully sharp and focused with fine salinity, depth, acidity and balance, and as such is already extremely approachable. The flavour spectrum encompasses toast, oyster shell, citrus, cream and a flinty, mineral depth. There’s supreme balance and elegance here, combined with a hidden underlying power that will continue to emerge and broaden with time. The finish is dry and long.

    This exceptional cuvee has been crafted since 1964 as a tribute to Nicolas Francois Billecart, founder of the house.     This superb Champagne from another of our favourite houses opens with a white frothy mousse and shows excellent hold. Once dissipated, the pale gold straw coloured base wine emerges with exceptionally fine and profuse bead showing terrific persistence. The nose delivers a superb Champagne sniff with complex notes of baked bread, yeast lees, some toasty characters, a touch of citrus and some roasted almond end notes.     Bollinger’s 2007 R.D. is superb, but it is also a wine that reflects the nature of a unique and challenging growing season. In most vintages the R.D. is marked by the distinct creaminess and breadth of Aÿ Pinot Noir. Two thousand seven, though, was a difficult year marked by very dry weather, rain at the end of the growing season and an early harvest in August, something that was not as common as it has become. Selection was essential. For the 2007, the blend is composed of just 14 villages compared to the more typical 18-25. Verzenay is the main Pinot component while Cramant plays the leading role in the Chardonnays. For these reasons, the 2007 is an R.D. driven by more focus, energy and tension than readers are used to seeing. Lemon confit, dried flowers, sage, mint, crushed rocks, almond and ginger are some of the aromas and flavors that give the 2007 its complex, multi-faceted personality. Drink 2022 - 2047.

    Disgorged on July 10, 2020, with three grams per liter dosage, Bollinger's eagerly awaited 2007 Extra-Brut R. D. is beautiful, unwinding in the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, citrus pith and white flowers mingled with hints of honey, orange oil, buttery pastry, English walnuts and delicately spicy bass notes. Full-bodied, vibrant and incisive, it's unusually elegant and structurally fine-boned for what is routinely one of Champagne's more muscular tête de cuvées, with a bright spine of acidity that's cloaked in vibrant, concentrated fruit, complemented by a pearly pinpoint mousse and concluding with an intensely sapid finish. Long and penetrating, this is a tightly coiled R. D. that will reward bottle age. Drink 2021 - 2037.

    PN TX17 is the latest release of the now yearly special releases from Bollinger designed to highlight specific terroir in the context of house style. While the first two releases highlighted the village of Verzenay, ths year the shift is to Tauxières with 51% sourced from this premier cru village. Tauxières is not often spoken about, yet as a village that is late to ripen it will become more important in the years ahead, and one of the key reasons Bollinger has chose it this year. Completing the blend is additional Pinot Noir sourced from Aÿ, Verzenay and Avenay, along with reserve wines from 2016, 2009 and 2006. Dosage is a low 4g/L.

Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fleshy, with tangy acids and impressive ripeness for the vintage, it concludes with an elegantly mordant finish.     The NV PN TX 17, 100% Pinot Noir from Tauxières, is the next wine in Bollinger’s new series of single-village Champagnes. Bright and punchy, the 2017 is redolent of pear, dried flowers, mint, chalk and sage. Aromatically, the 2017 could easily be mistaken for a Blanc de Blancs such is its purity, but the richness and resonance of Pinot are unmistakable on the palate. This is an especially, vinous, layered Champagne that offers striking interplay between its intense fruit and the mineral, saline and savory-laced frame that holds it all together. The only thing this could use is a bit more body, as it is a touch austere. Disgorged: February, 2022. Drink 2024-2034.

The salinity that marked the previous two iterations of this PN series seems less present, with this one having more notes of pastry and hazelnuts as well as some zesty citrus, but airing adds an iodine-like tang.     Powerful and complex this is a stunning rendition of Bollinger’s La Grande Annee

    A blend of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay sourced from 19 different crus, mainly Ay and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir whilst for the Chardonnay Chouilly and Oiry. Fermented entirely in aged oak barrels.
    A fine, satiny mousse slowly recedes to reveal a pale straw gold tinged coloured base that has a nibble stream of delicate bubbles flowing through it. The nose is magnificent, complex aromatics of baked bread, yeast lees and brioche soar from the glass with cashew, subtle citrus, hazelnut and ginger ensuing. On the palate Bollinger’s hallmark richness and power are shaped by vivid acidity with mouth filling flavours of baked bread, citrus, yeast lees and cashew trailed by some brioche and almond like characters. Dry chalk tinged finish with a long airy yet sculptured aftertaste.

    The 2014 La Grande Année is stunning. In fact, it is one of the best recent editions I can remember tasting. What comes through most is the wine’s sizzling energy and tension, qualities that aren’t often associated with Bollinger, where the Champagnes tend to show more breadth and volume. In 2014, readers will find a Grande Année built on linear intensity and drive.
    The 2014 is a blend taken from 19 villages, 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay instead of the more typical 70/30 mix. For the second time in two decades (the first was 2007), Verzenay takes the lead in the Pinots over Aÿ, more or less an inverse from the norm. Verzenay, a north-facing village in the Montagne de Reims that saw less rain than Aÿ and most of the Vallée de la Marne, yields Pinots of energy more than volume. That, married with Chardonnays mostly from the Côtes des Blancs (predominantly Chouilly, Vertus, Oiry and Cramant), results in a truly magical Grande Année that will delight Champagne fans for several decades.     The 2014 Champagne La Grande Annee Brut is 61% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, with 7 grams per liter dosage, and sees more fruit coming from Verzenay. I loved this wine last year, and it did not disappoint at this tasting either. Perfumed and mineral-tinged notes of saline and lemon custard lift from the glass, and it’s medium to full bodied on the palate, taking on a more focused and linear feel while remaining quite powerful, with salty minerality. I love the tension this brings, with a long, persistent spine of acidity, and it’s aging at a very slow rate. Drink 2024-2044. Disgorged in February 2023.

The Rosé is blended from a base of the Blanc plus 5% still red Pinot from Bollinger’s Coteaux des Enfants vineyard in Aÿ.     The 2012 La Grande Année Rosé is airy, gracious and so wonderfully inviting. Crushed flowers, mint, white pepper and red berry fruit are all gracefully woven together. Today, the 2012 is naturally quite young and still shows the tension of a Champagne that was disgorged just a few months ago. Readers who prefer Champagnes with softer edges and a bit more flavor complexity will want to cellar the 2012. I have to admit, I very much like the wine today, in its youthful state, where its energy and focus are front and center. The 2012 is a blend of 67% Pinot Noir and 33% Chardonnay taken from 21 villages built around a core of Aÿ and Verzenay Pinot Noir and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oiry Chardonnay, crus that are quite complementary.     The NV Brut Rosé, which was first introduced in 2008, offers classic, slightly tertiary notes of spiced cherries, dried strawberries, and rose petals. Clean, crisp, and chiseled on the palate, it’s much more firm and tight than the Special Cuvée, yet has a great finish, impeccable balance, and bright acidity. A blend of 62% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Meunier, with 30% vinified in barrel, it spent 30 to 36 months on lees. Give it a year or so.

    This is the second of the now yearly special releases from Bollinger designed to highlight specific terroir in the context of house style. While this release follows a similar formula to the inaugural release, with the village of Verzenay the focus, each year the team will determine which of their sources performed best and deserve to be singled out. Verzenay grapes constituted 47% of the final blend this time round, compared to 48% last year. The cuvée is made from three different years, with 2016 as the base wine supplemented by wine from 2015 and from reserve magnums of 2006, also from Verzenay.

    Soft, open-knit and wonderfully inviting PN VZ 16 is a worthy follow up to the sublime 2015 that launched this new Blanc de Noirs in the Bollinger range last year. Sweet red cherry, Mirabelle, spice, mint and dried flowers all grace this wonderfully translucent, expressive Blanc de Noirs. North-facing sites in Verzenay that confer tension and energy make up about half the blend, with wines from Aÿ, Bouzy and Louvois playing supporting roles. Vinification is done in equal parts steel and oak. This release is based on 2016 (50% of the blend), with reserve wines that go back to 2006, including 23% from reserve magnums. Readers who enjoy Blanc de Noirs will adore the PN VZ 16. I find the interplay of vibrancy and the creamier notes that are so typical of the house style to be incredibly appealing.     The 2012 Bollinger Grande Annee sits well in the glass with a foamy white mousse showing excellent hold over a straw to pale gold coloured base that has a steady stream of tiny bubbles flowing through it with great persistence. The refined nose has an understated intensity to it with scents of brioche, yeast lees, citrus and baked bread escaping from the glass. Light toast, cashew and honeyed characters are also present. The beautifully detailed palate shows an air of refinement, eloquently combing richness with freshness and a light satiny feel. Rich baked bread and yeast lees flavours are the drivers with citrus and pear fruits in the background along with cashew, light dried honey and faint toast. Dry chalk tinged finish with crisp mouth watering  acidity leading into a very long, finely textured aftertaste that possesses great poise and balance. A superb Grande Annee that showcases the finesse of the vintage.

    Disgorged in July 2019, Bollinger's 2012 Brut La Grande Année is showing well, offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of crisp yellow orchard fruit, fresh peach, orange oil, toasted walnuts and dried apricot that's still quite reserved with less than a year on cork. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, the 2012 is blockier and broader-shouldered than its 2008 predecessor, with a weightier and even more concentrated palate built around a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a chalky finish that carries appreciably dry extract. This isn't quite as elegant as the exquisite 2008, but it is a superb effort and obviously built to age. Drink 2024-2050.

    An exceptional Bollinger La Grande Annee that manages a fine balance between richness, power and freshness.

    Sourced solely from Grand Cru (91%) and Premier Cru (9%) vineyards the wine was entirely fermented in small oak barrels in which oxidation can be carefully controlled. The final blend comprised of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Pours well with a frothy white mousse sitting over a straw pale coloured base. Exceptionally fine and very profuse bead. Heady aromas of yeast lees, toast, honeyed characters and roasted nuts waft out of the glass with pear and citrus notes also evident. A rich, textured core is detailed with complex flavours of yeast lees, baked bread, oily toast and dried honey flavours set over a back drop of cashews and roasted almonds. Finishes dry with some refreshing crisp, citrus infused acidity. Long creamy aftertaste of baked bread, yeast lees, toast, citrus and honey coated roasted nuts. Rich, toasty and creamy but fresh.

The wine opens with a very clear, deep, rich and aromatic but also pure and mineral-fresh nose of crushed rocks, cherries, brioche, pain aux raisin, white nougat, chalk and ripe, yellow-fleshed fruits. Highly elegant and complex on the weightless yet persistent and salty palate, this is an intense, densely woven, firmly structured yet elegant, beautifully refined and refreshing "recent disgorgement" (February 2018) that reveals just a kiss of oxidative flavors that adds even more complexity.     A blend of 72% Pinot Noir and 28% Chardonnay, of which 7% was red wine, sourced from 84% Grand Cru vineyards and 16% Premier Cru vineyards. Fermented entirely in barrels and cellar aged for more than 10 years.
    Brilliant salmon-pink colour. Subtle aromas that open with warm tobacco, chocolate, mocha and roasted coffee notes. This is followed by the fragrance of dried flowers and peony, and finally dried fruit and fruit compote notes, especially quince.
    On the palate a fullness that strengthens the density of the wine, mature aromas, fruit jellies and honey. A great deal of length on the palate and a wonderfully fresh finish with notes of blood orange and mandarin peel.

    Bollinger's 2008 Grande Année is rich, ample and full-bodied, with all of the pedigree of the vintage on display. Dried pear, dried flowers, chamomile, red plum and mint develop as the 2008 shows the breadth and creaminess that are such signatures of the Bollinger house style. A whole range of brighter, more floral and chalky notes appear later, adding translucence and energy. The 2008 is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay taken across 18 crus, and it is the Pinot that very much informs the wine in both flavor and texture.     Impressive concentration and power here. This is really assertive with ripe yellow orchard fruits and citrus within a core encased in a layer of more savory, toasty notes on both the nose and palate. There's that gentle hint of aldehyde that is the traditional stamp of the house plus savory woody notes, white mushrooms and some chalk and spices, too. The palate has a fleshy opening, filling out with peach and hazelnut flavors before a smooth ride to the finish. Approachable and complex. Drink it now through to 2020.

Full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's a concentrated, chiseled Ursules that's built for the cellar, with racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. While the reputation of the 2017 vintage in Champagne isn't great, you wouldn't know that from tasting this brilliant cuvée. As readers will remember, Les Ursules was the vineyard with which Cédric Bouchard began Roses de Jeanne, and he notes that of all the wines in his range, it's always the highest in acidity, the slowest to ferment and the slowest to conclude its malolactic fermentation.     We began with the 2017 Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules from Cédric Bouchard-Roses de Jeanne, a 2021 disgorgement. This offers a discrete but complex array of scents with fleeting aromas of Japanese yuzu and lemon verbena, even a hint of rosewater in the background. The palate is beautifully balanced with unerring harmony; it’s not intense, yet elegant with just the right amount of bitterness on the finish to keep you on your toes. Elegant and poised, this is drinking beautifully. Drink 2022-2040.

    Derived from a 73-acre, southwesterly exposed site that's one of Bouchard's highest-altitude parcels, the 2013 Blanc de Noirs Côte de Béchalin wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of citrus oil, mandarin, beeswax, white flowers, apricot and apple. Medium to full-bodied, racy and concentrated, it's vinous and tightly wound, with a bright spine and a long, chalky and aromatic finish. The 2013 is finer-boned and more incisive than its more muscular 2012 counterpart, and it displays some exotic aromatic top notes that reflect the late growing season. Bouchard recalls that he began picking on September 26, 2013, and finished in October, just before the rain set in.

    The 2013 Blanc de Noirs Côte de Bechalin La Parcelle is fabulous. Candied lemon peel, almond, mint, sage and baked apple tart are some of the many notes that open in the glass. There is a sense of energy to the 2013 that is so beguiling. Eighty months on the lees give the Parcelle quite a bit of depth, but also the freshness that develops with extended time in the cellar.     Bouchard's NV Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine (2018) is fleshy and dramatic, bursting with aromas of pear, warm bread, orange oil, nutmeg and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, textural and enveloping, it's one of the most gourmand, generous renditions of Val Vilaine to date, yet it remains beautifully precise and vibrant—even racy. It will be hard to resist young, but I suspect it will also evolve very gracefully in the cellar. The Val Vilaine is always the youngest wine in the range - the current release is the 2018, which spent just 15 months on its lees - but it will give readers who aren't familiar with these wines a very good idea of the house style.     The 2016 Blanc de Blancs La Haute Lemblé is a beautiful wine. In this vintage, the Haute Lemblé is a bit more tropical than it often is. Time in the glass brings out hints of passion fruit and white flowers. Bright and energetic, with terrific focus, the Haute Lemblé is also a bit more open-knit in the early going than it can be. I doubt that will be much of an issue given that most bottles disappear from the market and are enjoyed almost as soon as they are released. Zero dosage. Disgorged: April, 2020.
