Emmanuel Lassaigne is one of Champagne's most thoughtful and exciting grower producers, working with the chalky south and southeast-facing sloped vineyards of Montgueux in the Aube department. Lassaigne's extraordinary Champagnes are pushing the qualitative boundaries not just of the Aube but of the entire region. Farming in his vineyards is organic with cultivated soils and harvesting at full maturity. In the cellar, the wines ferment in wood and stainless steel, and they're disgorged by hand without dosage. The style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric.

Lassaigne's vintage Blanc de Blancs is perhaps the sweet spot in the range. As a cuvee of 100% Chardonnay from the Le Cotet (35%) and Les Paluets (65%) vineyards, the wine was raised in tank before 8 years in bottle and disgorgement in late 2021. Given the extended lees contact this wine shows an enormous level of depth and complexity.

This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. There is immense ageing potential here and you’ll be rewarded for keeping it. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Clos Saint-Sophie was owned by Marcel Dupont, a friend of the French botanist Charles Baltet, author of an important 19th-century treatise on grafting, and Baltet used the Clos for experiments. Rather than having any kind of ecclesiastical origin, the vineyard in fact takes its name from Dupont's wife. In 1876, Emperor Meiji of Japan sent two Japanese to Montgueux to study viticulture at the Clos Saint-Sophie, and in 1877, they imported 100 vines to Japan. Thus, the first plantings in history of vitas vinifera in Japan—on Mount Fuji—are inextricably linked with this small corner of the Aube. Today, the Clos is owned by the Valton family—better known as the proprietor of children’s' clothing brand Petit Batteau—and Lassaigne makes the wine. When most of Montgueux's vineyards were been abandoned after the War, the Clos was one of the few to remain in cultivation, so it represents a living link with the village's past. Clos Sainte-Sophie Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is from 40+ year-old vines in a 0.4-hectare plot in the centre of the Montgueux and is aged in used barrels from Burgundy and Cognac and a Savagnin ouillé barrel from Ganevat (Jura).

Notes of citrus oil and crisp yellow orchard fruit mingle with nuances of saffron, anise, dried white flowers and warm bread in a complex bouquet, introducing Lassaigne's 2012 Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs Clos Sainte-Sophie, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine that's deep and muscular, with racy acids and a finish that's simultaneously intensely saline and searingly chalky. The 2012 was raised in the same Burgundy, Cognac and the Jura that produced the inaugural 2010 rendition.

The new disgorgement of Lassaigne's emblematic NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux is a blend of the 2020, 2019 and 2018 vintages, from vines that range between 45 and 70 years old growing on the slopes of Montgueux. Offering up aromas of pear, crushed mint, bread dough and white flowers, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and incisive, with a satiny attack that segues into a taut, racy mid-palate, concluding with a pungently saline finish. It's an especially strong rendition. Drink 2023 - 2032.

The nose of this blanc de blancs is appealingly ripe but not overly so, with a pleasant balance of apple, lemon peel and apricot touched with a gentle note of autolysis. The texture of the mousse is creamy, and the feel is supple and silky without any heaviness. The base wines are one-third each from 2017, 2018 and 2019. Grapes are blended from sources throughout the village and aged on the lees in tank and barrel for more than a year before tirage. Delicious. Drink 2022 - 2030.

The 2007 Dizy-Corne Bautray is soft, silky and quite open. Lemon peel, mint, white flowers and white pepper are some of the notes that give the 2007 its distinctive brightness and energy. Equally polished on the palate, the 2007 is exceptionally silky and finessed in its tactile impression. A wine of classiness and total understatement, the 2007 should drink well for at least another 5-10 years, perhaps more. There is good brightness in the glass, but the wine’s structure is very much medium in body. One of the things that stands out most is the silkiness and nearly imperceptible feel of the bubbles, especially as the wine opens up in the glass. Disgorged January, 2016. No Dosage. Drink 2017 - 2027.

From a plot of chardonnay planted in 1960, this has very impressive focus, power and concentration. Smells of chalk, stones and an array of citrus in the lemon/lime/grapefruit zone. Very fresh. The palate's fleshy, pristine, focused and really lithe with juicy lemon citrus flavours in addition to impressive depth and drive. Love the stony, mineral and toasted-almond finish. Brilliant Champagne. Drink now and through to 2022 and beyond.

Disgorged in April 2018 with 2.5 grams per liter dosage, Jacquesson's 2008 Extra Brut Grand Cru Avize - Champ Caïn is showing brilliantly, soaring from the glass with a lively bouquet of waxy lemon rind, green apple, walnuts, marzipan and subtle hints of drawn butter and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, mid-palate volume and structural tension, with a deeper, broader profile than the 2008 Core Bautray tasted alongside. The finish is long, saline and chalky. While Hervé Chiquet observes that Jacquesson has made considerable progress—especially in the vineyards—in the last decade that the 2008 necessarily doesn't reflect, this is nonetheless a brilliant Champagne. Drink 2020 - 2040.

The 2008 Extra-Brut Avize Champ Gain is rich, ample and creamy. Graphite, dried herbs, hazelnut and tropical notes fill out the wine’s ample frame effortlessly. Textural richness and vibrancy melded together make the Champ Gain absolutely compelling. Tropical overtones add shades of nuance to a Champagne that shows all of the resonance and breadth that are such Avize signatures. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2018. The 2008 Extra Brut Premier Cru Dizy - Corne Bautray is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with a youthful bouquet of citrus oil, clear honey, preserved rhubarb and subtle hints of fresh pastry. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with an incisive spine of acidity, considerable concentration and a long, reverberating finish. This is an unusually tensile, racy rendition of this cuvée, and Jean-Hervé Chiquet observes that, in the 2008 vintage, this typically rich wine has embraced its Chardonnay origins more wholeheartedly than usual. It's a terrific wine that will delight Champagne purists. All 5,488 bottles and 304 magnums were disgorged without dosage in April 2018. As readers may know, the Corne Bautray is a southwest-facing parcel planted in 1960 that's characterized by gravel and marl soils over a base of Campanian chalk. Drink 2020 - 2038.

The 2008 Extra-Brut Corne Bautray, 100% Chardonnay, is a wine of real class and sophistication. Lemon confit, white pepper, chalk and floral notes all open up in the glass, but more than anything else, the Corne Bautray is a wine of total harmony. The finesse of the mousse alone is truly remarkable. Beautifully textured and vinous, with terrific freshness, the 2008 is a regal, impeccably balanced Champagne with tons of pure personality. This is a phenomenal Champagne of such purity. It delivers immense power with such refinement. There’s a very precise feel with a super fine, sliced-brioche nose and white-peach, fine-lemon and chalky-mineral notes. So fresh. There’s such intensity, focus and delicacy to the palate. So focused and so detailed with seamless, fluid, ripe-chardonnay flavor and layers of savory baked biscuits, building on the finish. Wonderfully complete structure and texture. The power here is considerable and the acidity drive is simply wild. Wow! Drink or hold.

A fluffy white mousse rises to the top of the glass slowly dissipating to reveal a pale gold coloured base that has a fine persistent bead coursing through it. Intense baked bread, oily toast like scents and yeast lees aromatics flow out of the glass complexed by roasted almonds, brioche and hints of ginger. A rich full palate is backed by nervy, crisp acidity that gives the wine an energetic feel. Mouthfilling flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and oily cashews meld into citrus and roasted almond characters. The NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 742 (2014 base) has really opened up since I last tasted it about a year ago. The Pinot is so expressive in the No. 742, a Champagne built on texture and resonance. Dried pear, dried flowers, plum and spice fill out the wine's frame effortlessly, but the 742 truly shines with a bit of air, which seems to accent its freshness. Readers looking for a fine grower Champagne to drink now will find much to like. The blend is 59% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers) and 41% Chardonnay (from Avize and Oiry). Based on the 2014 vintage and disgorged with 1.5 grams per liter dosage in July 2018, Jacquesson's NV Extra Brut Cuvée No. 742 continues the house's pioneering series of cuvées that employ reserve wines not in pursuit of a constant "house style" but merely with the aim of complementing each base vintage to maximize its potential. Wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of walnut oil, dried white flowers, saffron, citrus oil and crisp orchard fruit, along with a delicate top note of fino sherry, it's medium to full-bodied, sapid and incisive, with superb concentration, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. Very fine perfume incorporating warm bread aromas, citrus pith and mixed candied citrus peel, dried apple, wet slate-mineral-like wafts. It’s got velocity in the palate, chalky, edgy, crystalline, more ‘mineral-like’ flavour and feel, set within the frisky tang of fruit and whoosh of firm bubbles. Really easy to drink, has a succulence in all the mix of things. Great.

Pale straw, light pale gold base colour threaded by a very persistent stream of exceptionally fine bubbles. Powerful nose featuring complex aromatics of baked bread and subtle citrusy honeyed pear notes married to oily toast characters, yeast lees and cashew. Rich mouthfilling flavours of toasty yeast lees, citrus and lightly honeyed baked bread fill the concentrated and creamy textured palate. Also evident are nuances of roasted almonds and brioche. From the 2012 harvest and five locations in Champagne. The farming is now biological/organic, the winemaking decidedly low intervention. Indeed, the wines sit on lees in barrel for their life outside bottle, unfined and unfiltered. Sulphur addition would be on the very lower side for Champagne at 20ppm added and less than 40ppm total. Effectively, as natural-leaning as Champagne gets these days. All the info is on the label too. This is a super-dooper release too.
It’s a marriage of toasty-richness and bristling freshness here. Compact in the palate with undertones of brioche, marzipan, ginger biscuit, with a coursing vein of green apply, tangy fruit character and lively oyster-shell-like minerality. The bouquet is attractive, a mesh of patisserie, honey and apple/citrus character. It pulses through the mouth with refreshment factor and light, palate sticking fruit-yeast sweetness. It’s gulpable and yet fine. It’s stunning stuff. Drink 2017-2023.

The Cuvée No. 741, based on the 2013 vintage, is quite pretty. Complex, nuanced and multi-dimensional in feel, the 741 is beautifully layered in the glass. In this release, the Pinot Noir is especially expressive and gives the wine a measure of textural breadth that is unusual for a young 700-series Champagne. Soft contours and a host of toasty, resonant flavors give the 741 its distinctive feel. Best of all, the 741 will drink well upon release. Disgorged June 2017. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Drink 2018-2028.

This is the third release of Prévost’s négociant-manipulant cuvée, which was born during the frost-ravaged 2017 season. Where the first two releases were 100% Pinot Meunier sourced from Prévost’s neighbours in Gueux, 2021 was sourced from a number of vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, including a good share from the Cramant Grand Cru. Readers will be aware that when Prévost does work with purchased fruit, he only works with growers that emphasise cultivated soils, low yields and full ripeness. He always works in close collaboration with them, i.e. both harvest date and sorting of the grapes are in Jérôme’s hands.

The winemaking for this label remains exactly the same as the estate label, using indigenous yeasts and fermenting and raising in a mix of used barrels of all sizes from 225 to 600 litres. He neither racks, filters nor stabilises the wine. He uses 23 g/L for the secondary fermentation, then gives the wine up to 18 months of bottle age before disgorging by hand, with around 2 g/L. Please note that Jérôme told us that in 2022, this label will return to its original sourcing. So there you have it, another Prévost collector’s item!

Denser and more compact than its 2019 counterpart, the NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 20 reveals inviting aromas of pear, confit citrus, mirabelle plum and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that's vinous and sapid, built around chalky structure and concluding with a penetrating finish. While it can be approached now, a few years' patience will pay dividends. Drink 2023-2040.

The NV Extra Brut Les Beguines is spicy, savory and full of Meunier character. All it needs is time to soften and fully come together, as it has just been disgorged. Today, it is the raw energy that impresses most. Dried pear, ginger, spice, dried herbs, anise and chamomile open gradually. Time in the glass fills out the mid-palate and finish nicely, giving a good idea of what is to come. This looks to be a medium-bodied, distinctly savory, vintage for Les Beguines. This release is based on 2020, with 20% reserve wines from 2019. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2022. Drink 2024-2032.

The NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 18 is a wine of immense charm and generosity of spirit. Mingling aromas of walnuts, fenugreek, pear, yellow orchard fruit, licorice, white flowers and buttery pastry with evocations of peach and apricot, it's full-bodied, fleshy and voluptuous, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, enveloping core, concluding with a sapid finish. "These were the nicest grapes I've ever seen when assessed simply as fruit," Prévost remarks, contrasting the 2018 crop with the smaller berries and thicker skins of, for instance, 2015 "which were great grapes from which to make wine."

Prévost’s 2.2 hectare vineyard, Les Béguines, is in Gueux, 10km west of Reims in the north of the region. Inherited from Jérôme’s grandmother, the site was planted in the 1960s with an old, slow growing, rootstock that descends deeply. Les Béguines is close to 100% Pinot Meunier, although there is a small amount of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc, that was planted about a decade ago. The soil of Les Béguines is a layer cake of calcareous sand (Thanetian sand), and clay. The vineyard management is of course organic, with the soils cultivated and yields kept at balanced levels. Nothing is forced. The fruit is picked ripe and the wine is vinified without any additions in large format, used barrels for ten months. Bottled unfiltered, Prévost disgorges the wine after roughly 17 months on lees and adds approximately 2g/L dosage, (so extra brut). These are wines that always show better after time in bottle, five + years is ideal, but even a year or two makes a great difference. Frustrating but true. That’s not to say these wines won’t give pleasure when young and the striking 2016 is a case in point!

    Other Reviews....
The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Les Beguines is endowed with all the tension, energy and resonance readers have come to expect from these highly singular Champagnes. Lemon confit, mint, white flowers and crushed rocks all race out of the glass in an explosive, beautifully expressive Champagne that dazzles from the very first taste. In fact, 2016 is a rare vintage where I prefer the Blanc to the Rosé. In 2016, Jérôme Prévost blended in 10-15% reserve wines from 2015 along with drops of still red Meunier. More importantly, the 2016 is a Champagne readers will not want to miss, as it is absolutely compelling.

Inherited from Jérôme’s grandmother, the site was planted in the 1960s with an old, slow-growing, rootstock that descends deeply. Les Béguines is close to 100% Pinot Meunier, although there is now a small amount of 10-year-old Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc that has been planted next to the Pinot Meunier parcel. As these vines are still young, they are currently blended into the Les Béguines cuvée, representing roughly 6% of the blend. With time they may produce a stand-alone wine. The soil of Les Béguines is a layer cake of calcareous (Thanetian) sand over clay over calcareous sand. The vineyard management is of course organic, with the soils cultivated and yields kept at balanced levels.

To recover some of the volumes lost to the frost of 2017 (some 80%!) Prévost sourced fruit from a neighbour’s vineyard in Les Béguines. This makes 2017 the first vintage of this wine to be bottled under the Domaine’s new Négociant Manipulant (NM) status.

As always the wine was vinified without any additions in large-format, used barrels for ten months and bottled unfiltered. Prévost disgorged the wine after 17 months on lees and added approximately 2g/L dosage, so the wine is Extra Brut.

    Other Reviews....
Prévost's NV Extra Brut Les Béguines LC 17 is showing even better than it did a year ago, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of honeycomb, walnuts, confit lemon, spices and warm bread. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's racy and incisive, with a deep and sapid core, bright acids and chalky structuring extract. While it is drinking very well young, it will evidently only go from strength to strength over the next decade.

A mouthwatering rosé that wraps a racy spine of acidity in the plushly creamy, cashmere-like mousse, offering a fine frame for the rich and finely meshed range of flavors, with baked raspberry, passion fruit and Mandarin orange peel fruit accented by chopped hazelnut, fleur de sel, candied ginger and lime blossom notes that echo for days on the vivid finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Disgorged autumn 2019. Drink now through 2030.

An intense clarity of fresh red berries from the start, which builds anticipation on the magnificent and magnifying nose. On the palate there’s counter-balancing mature buttery fruit crumble and a savoury note here, delicious and grown-up – the result of a high contribution of 50% reserve wines in the blend perhaps? There’s a smidgen of grippy texture at the end like drinking a light red wine and it does not detract. Less strikingly obvious and glamorous than the 26th edition. This will keep well and develop. Main harvest: 2013. 50% reserves. Aged for five and a half years on lees. 11% red wine used in the blend. Disgorged: Late 2019. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Vintage Krug holds a special place among the landscape of prestige cuvée Champagne, over the years having produced some of the most mesmerising and memorable wines of the region. Appearing only when conditions allow, and never at the sacrifice of their number one wine Grande Cuvée, Vintage Krug is cherished and chased by collectors the world over. Knowing that Champagne displays a range of experiences as bottles evolve over time, Krug also holds back a small amount of these vintage wines to be released as they reach a new peak of expression, naming them Krug Collection. These impossibly rare releases of Krug Collection are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars, and after regular tasting and appraisal are finally disgorged to reveal their new personality.

Krug Collection 1989 is part of Krug’s trilogy of three exceptional years (1988, 1989, 1990) with completely different conditions that resulted in Champagnes that are unique. Comprised of 47% Pinot Noir, 29% Chardonnay, 24% Pinot Meunier, Krug Collection 1989 was kept on lees for 25 years before finally receiving its cork in spring 2014. This 1989 magnum was then allowed to rest further before release.

    Other Reviews....
Krug’s 1989 Brut Krug Collection represents their most recent in a long-running series of late-releases that feature a vintage they have decided is especially expressive after entering what they refer to as its “second life.” In theory, if you have ideal cellar conditions and bought Krug’s initial disgorgement of the 1989 vintage when it came on the market around a decade ago, then you have essentially the same wine today, though I have never been lucky enough to make the relevant direct comparison. Given the relative infrequency with which a vintage is “declared” by Krug, their “Collection” bottlings represent the remnants of an already elite band. But this 1989 represents the first re-release from the only series of three consecutive vintage bottlings – 1988-1990 – in Krug’s history. The mingling of saline, nutty, and caramelized notes in the nose – adumbrating this wine’s entire performance – is gorgeous. Butter-toasted hazelnuts, dried wild mushrooms, kelp, and cocoa mingle in a silken, mouthwateringly saline and savory matrix reminiscent of oyster liquor laced with fresh lemon juice (because, there is still a youthfully citric store of energy here). This finishes with correspondingly pronounced umami and with tangy vibrancy of citrus and salt. After a day open, the nutty elements become more piquant and walnut-like, but the smoky hints of oxidation remain balanced by citric and mineral elements and positively integrated into a mysteriously diverse show. The palate becomes plusher (perhaps in part due to diminishing mousse) and creamy in an almost whipped-cream fashion, yet the long finish continues to offer uncanny refreshment. Certainly this can be safely held for at least a few more years and perhaps in an ideal cellar will “plateau” (or continue to).

It’s Friday, and that can only mean one thing. Champagne. This bottle of the 1989 Krug Collection is one of the very best I have had. The 1989 Collection is variable in quality, and quite a few examples have been on the mature side. Not this bottle. Its flavors are bright, focused and fresh for a Champagne of this age, with the classic super-fine Krug texture that invites a second glass and then a third as we look over the menu.

Shows a lovely interplay between the creamy bead and rich notes of almond financier, apricot preserves, treacle and cardamom, with finely cut, persistent acidity and flavors of pastis, raspberry puree, fennel seed and fleur de sel. Offers a refined, lasting finish, with a push of saline-tinged minerality. Drink now through 2029.

Krug's 1998 Brut Vintage is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the classic Krug style is rich, alive and totally vivid. Honey, almonds, smoke, graphite and dried apricots are some of the many aromas and flavors found in this rich, enveloping Champagne. A wine of texture and depth, the 1998 impresses for its vinous personality and terrific balance. Lively veins of underlying acidity suggest the 1998 will drink well for many years to follow. The 1995 Krug is gorgeous. I chose it because one of my guests loves Krug and I thought the 1995 would have the right amount of complexity to pair beautifully with the smokiness in Saison’s caviar. A very youthful '95. Delicate. Intense aromas of ginger, citrus, candied berry and multigrain bread turn to honey, roasted almonds and graphite on the palate. (from magnum) The grand finale to Olivier Krug’s awe-inspiring masterclass was the fabulous 1995 vintage, poured from magnum. It is one of four Krug vintages from the 1990s and it was one of the last wines which Olivier tasted with his father and grandfather. Today it is still going strong, with a primary and savoury nose of apricot and toast. On the palate this remains vigorous but mature, with oxidative notes of walnut oil, nougat and umami, as well as gingerbread, cappuccino, toast and candied fruits. There's lots of finesse and freshness and great length – a joy to drink now and for another 15 years at least. Drink 2017 - 2034.

Since their inception in 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has been their signature wine, and the most important wine they produce each year. Crafting Grande Cuvée only once a year, Krug now distinguish each release numerically, and provide great insight into the detailed composition via their Krug iD site. While these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend, normally over 120 base wines spanning 10+ vintages. The 170eme Edition is a staggering blend of 195 wines from 12 vintages back to 1998, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2014 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 51% Pinot Noir, 38% Chardonnay and 11% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 55% of the blend, while 45% of reserve wines are used from 11 older vintages stretching back to 1998.
Graceful and satiny the mousse slowly recedes into a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. An exceptional fine bead flowing through to the top of the glass with ample persistence. Sophisticated aromatics of citrus, roasted almonds and yeast lees meld into some oily toast like notes and cashew. Vivid and sculptured yet airy and also relatively open, well meshed flavours of citrus, oily toast characters, yeast lees, almond and subtle ginger evolve across the palate into a dry tense finish. There’s a subtle creaminess to the mouthfeel. Mouth watering acidity with a racy, tightly wound aftertaste.

Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 170ème Édition is based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by some 45% reserve wines dating back to 1998, with the house drawing on, among many others, 2013 for structure and 2012 and 2003 for generosity. Opening in the glass with aromas of pastry cream, dried fruits, pear, warm spices, freshly baked bread and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and fine-boned, with excellent concentration, racy acids and a precise, chiseled profile. But if the latter adjective could be applied to the 2013-base 169ème édition equally felicitously, the 2014-base 170ème is more giving and less tightly wound out of the gates and will offer more demonstrative drinking young. Drink 2021 - 2041.

A lovely ferny nose and breezy seaside raciness. Bright yellow fruit on entry, a flicker of preserved lemon and cooked quince adding vibrancy. Then comes the Krug richness which spreads over the palate. The balance hovers tantalisingly between tactile precision and soft warm fruit and the finish reveals layers of cinnamon-tinctured blancmange, and the creaminess goes on. Rich but light on its feet. A definite buy and a keeper. The 2014 base harvest was hit by sour rot and mildew in mid-summer. Intense selection meant Krug had to reduce the amount of Meunier to half its Grande Cuvée average, and reserve wines (representing 45% of the final wine) back to 1998 buttress the balance and complexity; a triumph of blending. It also relies heavily on 2013 to add life and structure. Main harvest: 2014. 45% reserves. Aged for six years on lees. Disgorged: Spring 2021. Drink 2023 - 2040.

This is Krug's signature champagne, and while these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend. Krug view this wine as their prestige cuvee, and it's the most important wine they produce each year. Based on the 2013 vintage and complemented by some 40% reserve wines dating back to 2000, Krug's newly released NV Grande Cuvée 169ème Édition is showing very nicely, unfurling in the glass with notes of citrus oil, buttered toast, dried apricot, warm biscuits and marmalade. Medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, it's a tauter, more chiseled rendition of Grande Cuvée by comparison with the richer, more textural and more demonstrative 168ème Édition (based on the 2012 vintage) that preceded it; but its bright spine of acidity is nicely cloaked in fruit. Concluding with a long and sapid finish, this is a very classically balanced Champagne that will reward bottle age. Drink 2021 - 2050.

Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 169ème Édition is brisk and finely cut, with terrific energy driving the citrus, floral and light tropical notes. Even with all of its energy, the 169 balances the vibrancy of the late-ripening 2013 vintage it is built on, with the depth that the reserve wines added to the blend. The 169 drinks well now but clearly has the potential to age. The 169 is a blend of 146 separate wines back to 2000. Krug ID: 120003. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Instantly recognizable aromatic depth and complexity here. The DNA of Grande Cuvée looms large on the nose with fresh-baked brioche, crushed almond, subtle baking spices and stony notes, as well as an array of stone fruit. The palate delivers a wide spectrum of citrus, from lemon to orange to grapefruit and beyond. The chardonnay really impresses in a long, concentrated mode. 43% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 22% pinot meunier. Great intensity and drive combine with a rich and complex palate, where truffle and woody notes develop as the wine breathes. This feels very youthful and, although it is non-vintage and designed to be drunk on release, I think this will gain more complexity with some extra time in bottle. Powerful yet refined – a very fine Krug based on the 2013 vintage, utilising wines from 11 different years, of which the oldest is 2000.

Deep copper gold. Tiny, tiny bead. Much more obvious acidity, age and (lightly oaky?) savour on the nose than Cristal 2013. Aérien with blossomy notes with a little mandarin. Very marked acidity on the palate. A real wake-up call! Sleek and fresh and truly spring-like with a light yeasty note on the very long finish. The most pleasure to be had initially is in the nose and the finish. The palate is still a bit of shock. This should have a long life. Bone-dry finish and playing the intellectual card. Throbs on the palate with all its vibrancy. Long. Tighter than the 168ème Édition. Structure dominates fruit.

This is Krug's signature champagne, and while these Edition wines are non-vintage, Krug prefers to call them multi-vintage given they use a large proportion of reserve wines in the blend. Krug view this wine as their prestige cuvee, and it's the most important wine they produce each year. The 168eme Edition is a staggering blend of 198 wines from 11 vintages back to 1996, with the base wine hailing from the excellent 2012 vintage. The varietal mix of the base wine is 52% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 13% Pinot Meunier, and comprises 58% of blend, while 42% of reserve wines are used from 10 older vintages stretching back to 1996.

Krug's NV Grande Cuvée 168ème Édition is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dried fruits, pear, toasted nuts, orange zest, honeycomb and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, generous but incisive, it's deep and elegantly fleshy, with a beautifully refined mousse and an enveloping core of fruit that's complemented by the characteristic Krug patina of nutty complexity imparted by barrel fermentation. Even if this is more open out of the gates than the 2011-based 167ème edition, the 168ème edition is also the more concentrated and intense of the two. It's based on the 2012 harvest, complemented by fully 42% reserve wines—a blend of 198 wines from 11 different vintages dating back to 1996.

Krug’s NV Grande Cuvée 168éme Édition is based on the 2012 vintage. Apricot, chamomile, lemon confit, hazelnut and lightly honeyed notes resonate in a super-expressive, inviting Grande Cuvée that will drink well right out of the gate. The natural radiance of the year comes through beautifully. This release is a blend of 52% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 13% Meunier across a staggering 198 different wines from eleven vintages going back to 1996. Already quite expressive, the 168éme shows plenty of the signature Krug toasty notes in a style that offers tons of immediacy. Some recent releases have been more inward at this stage, but the 168éme is ready to go. Disgorged winter 2018/2019. Krug ID: 119001.

This is the latest cuvée launched in the UK in May 2020 but has already been available in the US and Japan. A blend of 198 wines from 11 different years, with the youngest the acclaimed 2012, back to a precious, powerfully aromatic lot of Verzenay Pinot Noir 1996. The final blend – 52% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 13% Meunier – was bottled in 2013 and aged for seven years in Krug’s cellars in Reims. Yields in 2012 were 20% lower than usual because of a succession of meteorological events including frost, rain, storms and hail in winter and spring 2012, followed by the driest ripening season since 1974.
Notably intense aroma with crème pâtissière dominant. Masses of extract and remarkable acidity underpinned by great depth of flavour and beautiful balance on the finish. I think this is going to be a really great, glamorous Grande Cuvée that will continue to develop in bottle for many years to come. I suspect it will be even more enjoyable from the end of 2020. The length on the palate is remarkable. This is magnificently precise, a great tribute to the work of the old cellarmaster Eric Lebel, who is still in the background, and a wonderful welcome to his successor Julie Cavil, who has been learning from him since 2006.

52% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Meunier. A gentle gold with discreet yet persistent mousse and aromatics of spring meadows, lemon sherbet and barley sugar; the wine is pure and softly powerful, youthful energy finely poised, somewhat cautious after so many years in the chalky cellars. The reserve wines, Pinot Noir from Verzenay and Chardonnay from Avize especially, are subtle in support, vivacious despite their relative maturity, contributing to an ensemble which is hitherto dominated by red fruit, courtesy of the superb Pinot Noir, and a colourful tension. Behind that there are whispers of honey, quince and posset… and with so much more to come; but the finish, happily in these days of privation, takes one to wherever one may wish to go.

Notes from the House of Krug

Krug only produces its vintage champagne in an exceptional year. It is a matter of bringing out particular characteristics of one year, whilst maintaining the Krug taste. Between 1928 and 1982 Krug has only produced 25 vintages, all of which have become classics - the most famous being: 1928, 1947, 1953, 1955, 1969, 1976, 1982.

Also available: 1985 Krug Vintage Magnum (1500ml) - $350.00 each.

The 1996 Vintage is magnificent. A towering, explosive Champagne, the 1996 delivers the house’s signature breadth in a full-bodied, structured Champagne with enough pure density and acidity to age well for decades. Warm nutty and spiced overtones add nuance on the finish. The 1996 is just beginning to enter the early part of its mature stage, where it is sure to remain for several decades. Krug's Vintage is one of the truly epic wines of the year. Drink 2014-2026.

The extraordinary exception in ChampagneIn the heart of the "Cote des Blancs", there is an historical and unique vineyard which nestles in the village of Mesnil-Sur-Oger. Since the year 1698, a domain of 4.61 acres has been entirely walled and totally integrated into the village.

The site is interesting for its exceptional location, as it gives unequalled conditions for the growing and ripening of the chardonnay grape which is planted on a gentle slope facing south east.

It is for this reason that we are able, in certain years, to make an exception to Krug's fundamental rule of blending and to treat "Clos du Mesnil" as a unique wine from a complete domain of its own.

This property which belonged to the Benadictine Monastery of Le Mesnil until 1750 was purchased by Krug in 1971 in the size and form that have existed since 1698 (a scaled stone in teh vineyard wall testifies to this date). In 1971, the vines were too old and there was an urgent need for a full programme of replanting. This was achieved gradually from a progressive plan, plot by plot. It was not until the 1979 vintage that "Clos du Mesnil" was restored to its proper standards of greatness.

Under Krug's ownership, the musts have benefited from Krug's policy of fermentation exclusively in small oak casks: a process which develops the finesse and subtlety of the chardonnay grape to perfection.

The combination of a long history and the unique location of this vineyard together with Krug's many refinements, have made it possible today to offer this exceptional champagne with a distinctive and particularly elegant taste.

    A very "individualistic" champagne

So Clos du Mesnil which could almost be described as a "Chateau" Krug respects the uniqueness of its "terroir" as well as the character of each vintage, fully enhanced, as one would expect, by the Krug first fermentation exclusively in small oak casks.

The individuality of each vintage clearly stands out: classicism for the 1979, exhuberance for the 1981, opulence for the 1982, the delicacy for the 1983.

The quantities vary from year to year, the average being around 12,000 bottles only.

A special position within the "Krug family"

Together with the two classic Krugs, Krug Grande Cuvee and Krug Vintage, the Krug family includes three "specialties": Krug Rose, Krug Clos du Mesnil and Krug Collection (older Krug vintages especially laid down for 20 years or more).

For the Krugs, there is no hierarchy of quality between their wines, only different compositions, and different creations. Henri Krug likes to compare Krug Grande Cuvee to a symphony where all the instruments play together and form the harmony of the whole piece, whereas for him, Krug Clos du Mesnil is a sonata - single instrument Krug - but where the style of the author (i.e. in this case the belonging to the Krug family) remains clear and obvious.

This is Krug‘s signature champagne - a blend of forty to fifty base wines from as many as six to ten different vintages. Henri Krug maintains that this wine is the most difficult to make, since each year it should smell and taste the same as any of the previous releases. The concept is that someone ordering a bottle of Krug Grand Cuvee anywhere in the World, in any particular year should have precisely the same exceptional experience.

Good white creamy mousse with pale gold base wine colour. Exceptionally fine bead showing excellent persistence. The nose displays excellent intensity with pronounced toasty top notes followed by some baked bread, light citrus, yeast lees and some nutty roast almond like end note characters. The palate follows on from the nose delivering a full, rich and concentrated flavour profile of toasty yeast lees, baked bread and citrus with some nutty hazelnut characters emerging on the back palate. Clean crisp dry finish. Long persistent aftertaste of toasty baked bread, lees and hazelnut.
Drink over the next 4-5 years (2011-2016).

Deep straw colour with pale gold overtones. Very fine persistent bead. The nose has that classic Krug juxtaposition of power and elegance. Very pronounced nose, with complex aromas of yeast autoylsis, arrowroot biscuit and hazelnut. The palate displays sublime elegance, with great length and persistence. The biscuit yeast flavours are over-laid by nuances of roast almond and just the faintest hint of grapefruit. Perfect balance, with exceptionally long aftertaste. Drink it whenever you can afford it.

Excellent white creamy mousse which dissipates to reveal a deep straw pale gold base wine colour with an extremely fine and very persistent bead. The nose displays great finesse with refined scents of toast, yeast lees and citrus followed by some roasted almond like characters and biscuit. The palate combines great power and persistence with supreme elegance delivering flavours of toast, yeast lees and citrus meshed with some biscuit and light almond like characters. There is no fingerprint of place more pronounced than the mineral voice of the soil that resonates in the most distinctive champagnes. In all Champagne I have not tasted a wine of such earth-shaking minerality as Clos du Mesnil 2000. It rumbles to the very core of the earth deep below the mesmerising site, then rises on the finish, like a shard of pure chalk erupting from the surface of the Clos itself

Krug's 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil keeps getting better and better. The flavors are starting to develop lovely layers of complexity, while the wine is also fleshing out a bit, releasing gorgeous layers of texture. I have had the opportunity to try this vintage 3 times since it was released and while two bottles showed superbly the third seemed a bit tired and lacking the stunning depth of the other two. However the two good examples were outstanding with some secondary character to the yeasty aromas of brioche and citrus peel. There is an ultra-clean and sophisticated mouth feel to the middle weight flavors that are supported by an ultra-fine mousse, all wrapped in a notably dry but not really austere finish that possesses excellent lift that contributes to that beguiling feeling of being impatient for the next sip. While this will easily hold for years for my taste this has arrived on the front edge of its peak drinkability.

Pours with a lacy white mousse that overlays a pale straw coloured and pale gold edged base wine finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Finessed and complex, intense aromatics of citrus, toast, yeast lees and bready characters flow out of the glass with subtle elements of lightly honeyed roasted cashews following on. Remarkably fresh the rich yet stimulating, the palate is an essay in sophistication and class. Citrus, toast, oily bread and yeast lees characters intermesh over a backdrop of roasted almonds and delicately honeyed cashew. Dry finish with a light airy structure and mouth watering acidity giving it plenty of tension to counterpoint the subtlety creamed texture. Very long and refined aftertaste of yeast lees, oily toast like characters, baked bread, infusions of citrus, roasted almonds and lightly honeyed cashews. Will only get better with further bottle age.

Krug's 2004 Vintage is absolutely mesmerizing. Layers of bright, chiseled fruit open up effortlessly as the wine fleshes out with time in the glass. Persistent and beautifully focused, with a translucent sense of energy, the 2004 captures all the best qualities of the year. Moreover, the 2004 is clearly superior to the consistently underwhelming 2002 and the best Krug Vintage since 1996. Readers who can find it should not hesitate, as it is a magical bottle. The much-anticipated 2002 has impeccable detail and depth with a lot of chalky, stony and flinty elements on the nose as well as a very fresh edge. The nose is very complex and wound up tight but presents itself as very integrated and compressed. There are aromas of lemon rind, lime juice and a lime custard all at once, complemented in turn by a super-restrained hazelnut-like edge. Undertones of brown mushrooms, chalky minerals and lemon leaf. The palate has a core of sizzlingly intense, concentrated chardonnay framed whitin a powerful phenolic structure that will underpin the future of this Champagne. Krug's 2002 Brut (ID 415064 – disgorged IV/2015) has an intense citrus color and opens with a generous, intense yet fine and precise bouquet that indicates great depth and elegance. Red fruit flavors on the nose lead to a generously rich yet pure, highly refined and elegant palate, with lots of ripe cherry fruits and delicious yeasty flavors. This is a highly complex and tensioned but beautifully balanced 2002 with a charming dosage that gives perfect roundness. The finish, however, is clear, fresh and well-structured, if not taut, and very mineral. Tasted in Reims in April 2018. Drink 2018-2030.

Krug's superb 2006 Brut, which will be released this year, numbers among the vintage's high points, unfurling in the glass with a complex and expressive bouquet of tarte tatin, warm biscuits, ginger, honeycomb, dried white flowers, smoke and toasted nuts. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a fleshy attack that reflects the warm vintage but segues into a beautifully vibrant palate that's deep and surprisingly reserved, displaying superb definition, delicately chalky structure and a long, lively finish. Aurélien Laherte has been experimenting with a sans soufre (zero-sulphur) cuvée for several vintages, achieving success in 2018 with Nature de Craie. This cuvée is derived from two Premier Cru terroirs in Vertus and Voipreux, featuring vines planted in 1960, 1965, and 1987. The term "craie" refers to the chalky soils which lie on the lower slopes, which provide good exposure and and in turn providing fruit ripeness and no need for additional dosage. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes traditional pressing and maturation in neutral oak barrels, followed by aging under cork for 12 months. Laherte realised the secret to creating a cuvée with zero additions was to let the wine undergo full malolactic conversion, followed by bottling with zero dosage.

    $2940.00 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2019-2025)
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

100% Chardonnay Champagne from the Laherte family's chalkiest soils in Chavot and Épernay. These vineyards are all biodynamically farmed and are not only rich in chalk and chalky clay (marl) but there is also flint and schist. It has been aged for just over two years in bottle following a first fermentation in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask. No dosage. A creamy white mousse sits gracefully above a pale straw coloured base that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Pronounced pear and citrus aromas stand out from the glass with baked bread and yeast lees characters then taking over. Finishes off with some lightly honeyed toast notes. Sculptured mouthfeel with energetic acidity racing through the elegant yeast lees, toast and citrus flavours. Some light brioche and almond nuances are also evident. Finishes bone dry, tense and crisp with a refined citrus, oily toast, yeast lees and chalk tinged aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
    Alc. 12.5%

The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs marries power with energy to a degree I have not seen before here. In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Orange peel, apricot, chamomile and spice are some of the many notes that fill out the layers. The current release is based on 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 and 2015, all done in neutral oak. Zero dosage. Disgorged: February, 2020. Drink 2020 - 2026.

Aurélien Laherte’s second Blanc de Blancs bottling, Les Grandes Crayeres showcases Laherte’s two most mineral soils in Côteaux Sud d'Épernay. These parcels of 40-plus-year-old Massale selection are situated on a west-facing hillside composed of Campanian chalk with very little topsoil. The base wine is fermented wild in old barrels, aged three to ten years old, and does not go through malo. It then spent 30 months on lees in bottle, and a further nine months resting after disgorgement before commercial release. Dosage is 3-4 g/L.
A fine airy mousse slowly dissipates to reveal a pale straw base that has a very fine and persistent bead flowing through it. Refined aromas of baked bread, citrus and yeast lees are complexed by notions of toast, faint honeyed notes and subtle biscuity cashew nuances. Graceful, subtlety creamed in its mouthfeel and very long, the palate has an understated richness with flavours of yeast lees, baked bread and fresh citrus holding their own over some oily toast, light almond and chalky mineral characters. Finishes dry with crisp, chalky acidity. The long aftertaste building in richness as it lingers.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Here in its first release, the 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Grandes Crayères is another fabulous wine from Aurelien Laherte. Powerful in the glass, the 2014 possesses striking textural depth and resonance. This is an especially potent, structured expression of Chardonnay. I loved it. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: February 2018. Drink 2018-2029.

The latest release of Laurent Perrier's NV Ultra Brut is based on the 2014 vintage, disgorged in 2021. Offering up aromas of sweet buttery pastry, peach, iodine and hazelnut, it's medium-bodied, ample and fleshy, with bright acids and a chalky finish. Time sur lattes and on cork post disgorgement have rounded out any hard edges to deliver a very suave Champagne out of the gates. Drink 2023 - 2028.

This is very dry and vinous with very fine bubbles that wrap themselves around the wine. It's full with lovely fruit that is subtle and encompassing on the palate. Caressing texture and finish. Some pie crust and dry biscuit undertones here. Also white pepper. The base is 2014 and bone dry. Six years on lees. 55% pinot noir and 45% chardonnay. Bottled in May 2021.

Le Brun de Neuville is one of the leading producers in the limestone slopes of the Côte de Sézanne, one the southern sub-regions of Champagne. Their vineyards are predominantly Chardonnay and they are committed to encouraging a sustainable approach to viticulture by adopting increasingly environmentally friendly practices and the resulting wines are certified 'Haute Valeur Environnementale'. The vineyards are fascinating with only a thin layer of soil covering the intensely chalky soil.
Their Côte Blanche is 100% Chardonnay from the 45 year old vines. The harvest base is 2016 with 52% reserve wines spending 60 months on lees before disgorgement and release.
Pours with a fine satiny mousse that shows good hold over a pale straw pale gold coloured base. The bead is very persistent and fine. Nosing offers up a classic Champagne sniff of baked bread, dried honey, yeast lees, brioche and cashew that’s quite intoxicating. Rich and expressive with a cream tinged mouth feel and dry chalky finish, baked bread, pear, yeast lees and brioche flavours are quite full across the palate. Citrus and roasted cashew like nuances the back drop. Vivid acidity with a long bready, oily textured aftertaste.

Collection 244 is the 4th release of the new multi-vintage cuvée which replaces the Brut Premier. The Collection 244 shares the same philosophy as the Jacquesson 7 series and Krug’s Edition wines, which are based on a younger vintage blended with some older reserve wines.
Based on the 2019 vintage with a blend of 46% Reserve wines from the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018 vintages (10% of which were aged in oak). The wine is composed of 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir & 26% Pinot Meunier sourced equally from Vallée de la Marne, the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Dosage: 7g/l
A lacy and refined mousse forms atop a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. Flowing through its core is a fine and persistent bead. Aromas of baked bread, yeast lees, citrus and pear sail through the nostrils with plenty of intensity. Some trailing brioche and delicate cashew notes are also evident. Satiny flavours of baked bread, citrus and yeast lees extend across the palate with notions of subtlety honeyed cashew and delicate toast lying underneath. Airy in its feel it finishes long and salivating.

The first impression is as invigorating as a sea breeze. I love the interplay of mirabelle, grapefruit and lychee fruit with minty freshness and waxiness from lees contact. And all this is welded to a beautifully proportioned palate with plenty of structure, the acidity bright and the mousse animating. Very salty finish that pulls you back for more. A cuvee of 41% chardonnay, 33% pinot noir and 26% pinot meunier. Of these, 15% fermented in oak and 85% in stainless steel. The final blend contained 36% reserve perpetual and 10% reserve wines of the 2012 - 2018 vintage from oak. The dosage is 7 g/l. Drink or hold.

A pale silver/straw hue, the NV Champagne Collection 244 has 2019 as its base, with 42% Chardonnay, 26% Meunier, and the rest Pinot Noir. Expressive on opening, it’s fresh with a beautiful floral perfume and reveals pure notes of red berries, cherry, fresh peach, and a lovely fresh bit of primary fruit. It has a fine and refined mousse, and the palate is supple and inviting. Medium-bodied and elegant, with a ripe core, it has a delicate salinity to balance its freshness and has an attractive, lightly tannic feel while retaining a refined and precise profile. Approachable and fantastic now, it will be exciting to see how this develops over time. It continues to be an exceptional value. Drink 2024-2036. They have dialed the dosage back by a gram from the previous edition to 7 grams per liter of dosage.

Based on the 2019 vintage, Roederer's NV Brut Collection 244 is the finest release of the house's reimagined non-vintage Brut to date. Offering up aromas of pear, peach and nectarine mingled with notions of white flowers, beeswax, freshly baked bread and buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with a pretty pinpoint mousse, racy acids and a long, chalky finish. The quality of the base vintage really shines through. Drink 2023-2032

The World’s Finest Champagnes Delivered to Your Door.

The sensation of fine bubbles dancing across the tongue elevates one's senses. Centuries ago, the Champagne sensation had already positioned itself with exclusivity, royalty and good times. Its relative scarcity ensured that the price was high and thus reserved for special occasions. Its connections with the lustful French Court ensured it remained the preferred drink of high rollers, a situation that seems to have persisted.

The place to shop when you need some bubbly for a special occasion.

Whether it's a birthday, anniversary or wedding, or perhaps just enjoying a glass of bubbly with some friends and family over dinner, you'll discover many of the finest options in our online store. Nicks Wine Merchants taste most of the Champagnes we offer and give a 100% money back guarantee.

Much of the art of great Champagne lies in blending: marrying wines from particular years, plots or grape varieties. Each grape variety has its own characteristics. Chardonnay gives wine with a greenish-gold tinge, refined and long on the palate; rather assertively crisp when young but more expansive once it has acquired its sparkle. Pinot Noir vinified as a white wine (not red as in Burgundy) gives a pale gold wine with a sustained but ingressive nose, full-bodied and generous - a wine for keeping. Meunier is slightly pink and lacks the backbone of Pinot Noir, but has a fruity, well-rounded flavour.
