Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling.
Named after the original Pinot Noir vines planted in 1995 on the property, this wine is crafted from clones 114, 115, and MV6. It has a super-fine and delicate style with concentration and intensity, driven by red fruits with a touch of black. The wine features layers of spice and herbs, with only 5% whole bunch and 25% new oak in this vintage.

Serious pinot noir here. Has a strong currency in perfume of rich, cherry fruit characters, cinnamon spice, a bit of eucalyptus, pleasingly so, caraway seed in there, some maraschino. Good sniffs. Serious structure in the palate, ribbons of really lacy, fine, grainy tannin, superb and long here. More sour/black cherry fruit character to taste, some minty/sage leaf herbal notes too, faintly barnyard and forest floor notes in there too. Brooding in a way too. Delights. Drink 2023 - 2035.

The 2022 growing season at Curly Flat followed the cool climate trend of the previous two years, with the resulting wines dispalying fragrant aroma, nuanced depth, and balanced texture, all brought together by fresh mineral acidity. The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir is produced from eleven distinct parcels, each representing different aspects, clones, and soils. These parcels were carefully managed to maximize site expression, with indigenous yeasts used for fermentation and varying amounts of whole bunch, post-ferment skin contact, and oak treatment tailored to each lot. Expect fragrant spices and red fruit with darker fruits and savory complexities. After 16 months of maturation, the final blend includes 6% whole bunch and 17% new oak, and was bottled without filtration.

At first, this is gently aromatic with flavours of cherry compote, baked rhubarb and lots of chinotto, then, wham! A mouthful of tannins comes crashing through, setting up a more serious proposition. Yet the palate stays in mid-weight territory, as this is a more austere style with a light smattering of oak spice/char and very tangy acidity to close. Needs rich food as a match. Drink 2024 - 2032.

I tasted the three Curly Flat 2022 Pinot Noirs masked and for this one I wrote: The most complete of the three. Given that they’re all excellent quality, that may be all that you need to know. I like the stringiness of this, the tension, the fruit, the length. It’s real pinot. It feels as though it’s desperate to rush forward but it holds itself back until it gets to the finish, where it runs. It has a minerally aspect, a sour ripeness, a thread of woodsmoke, a garni of herbs. It will cellar beautifully. It’s cool, ripe, savoury, seamless and long. Drink 2026 - 2033+

I texted Anth D’Anna, Franco D’Anna, and Sam Middleton just now, asking which was the best DML Pinot in 2021. Mornington or Yarra? Anth says ‘Mornington’, Franco says ‘Mornington’, Sam says ‘double emoji laughing’ and then ‘probably Mornington’. I don’t have Jordan Lewis’ mobile number, so I asked him on Instagram, ‘It seems to be Mornington, though I think the Yarra will age better’. Wise words.
Strawberry, a little spice, almond, kind of pretty, with a flicker of mint and light cedar oak. It’s light to medium-bodied, delicate and lacy, a subtle hazelnut flavour, fine grained emery board tannin, very fresh, again the spiced strawberry and a minty blood orange, but pure finish of excellent length. Lovely wine with a ‘mineral’ character, and a certain cool charm. Drink 2022 - 2029+

The fruit was handpicked, 88% was destemmed and added to the remaining 12% left as whole bunches for fermentation. Natural fermentation commenced after three days and the must was plunged three times daily. Maturation took place in French oak barriques (30% new) for a period of 10 months.

There is a lovely meaty edge to this year's Coal River Valley release. The fruits lie in the blueberry and red cherry spectrum with plenty of underlying exotic spice, poached rhubarb, pomegranate, amaro herbs, citrus blossom and a whiff of game. But it's that meaty, umami stuff on the palate that grabs you, swelling at first, some sour cherry sweeping in, tannins silty fine and a lacy mineral acid presence provides the pulse. Lovely. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exceptionally perfumed the nose features a wonderful array of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise aromas followed by some forest floor, fresh herb and delicate spicy cedar notes. Seductive red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are sprawled across the palate with great power and intensity. Notions of forest floor, delicate anise, infusions of fresh herbs and spicy cedar linger through the finish. Supple in its texture with silky smooth tannins and a complimentary freshness it concludes long and expansive.

Chris Bendle’s entry level Pinot Noir is a blend of two vineyards in Kangaroo Ground and Woori Yallock, from the Northern and Southernmost points of the Yarra Valley. With a similar ripening period, but distinctly different soils, MV6 pinot noir from both vineyards was picked within a period of 1 week and treated in a near identical manner whilst being kept entirely separate.
Dark red in colour with black toned edges and a vibrant red to dark red hue. Pretty and fragrantly expressive out of the glass the nose is grabbed by scents of dark cherries, strawberries and violets which are flanked by some fresh herb, subtle forest floor and delicate spicy cedar notes. Light and elegant yet richly fruited, red to dark cherry and winter strawberry flavours overlay a violet infused back drop of fresh herbs, forest floor and spice. Possessing excellent freshness, depth and drive it has polished tannins and a long persistent finish.

PHI is the 21st letter of the Ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. The Lusatia Park vineyard was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 2016 having been previously the source of some of the finest Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays made in the Yarra Valley. Fermented with a combination of whole berries and whole bunches the resulting wine was matured in a mix of new and used French oak barriques for a period of 7 months.
A gorgeous Yarra Valley Pinot with four trophies to its name.
Semi translucent red to dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. Perfumed nose with aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, strawberries, rhubarb and hints of clove blossoming out of the glass. Lending further complexity are forest floor, brambly cedar and spice notes. Gorgeously fruited and supple in its feel, a power wave of dark cherry, strawberry and subtle rhubarb are layered across the palate with superb depth. Silky smooth tannins with notions of brambly dried herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also chiming in. Expansive with a long peacocks tail like finish that’s incredibly moreish. Winner of 4 trophies at the Victorian Wine Show.

A mix of vineyards and clones from the Lusatia Park vineyard in Woori Yallock. Bright cherry red. An immediately appealing wine with its dark cherry fruit, lavender and incense. This has good weight and depth without being heavy. A touch savoury, too, and the tannins are silky and long. Already a joy to drink, this will still be looking good four to six years from now. Drink by 2028.

Produced by the De Bortoli family from their Upper Yarra vineyard, Lusatia Park. Phi is the 21st letter of the ancient Greek alphabet and symbolises balance, harmony and proportion. It has great depth of brilliant red-purple colour and dark cherry, Campari and mixed spice aromas, the palate bright and fresh, intense and medium weighted, with plum pit flavours and a pleasant trace of bitterness to finish. It has good structure and would cellar for a few years, but it’s delicious now. True finesse and palate length.

There’s a fruit party going on here with loads of wild strawberries, red cherries and cranberries, spicy, too with snips of fresh basil and menthol plus heady florals mainly roses. The palate is mid-weighted, and a fruit succulence comes through so, too, layers of tannins with the sweet oak adding a hint of bitter green walnut on the finish. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.
Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.
Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.
Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Pretty scents of violet, sour to red cherry and rhubarb emanate from the glass with some vanillin cedar, meaty characters, earth and subtle stalky dried herb notes also evident. Light in body and supple in its feel the palate features savoury red to dark cherry and rhubarb flavours over earth, vanillin cedar, dried herbs and spice. Polished tannin structure finishing fresh, elegant and long.

The 50% whole bunches impart a discrete peppery note, very harmonious with quite a persistent finish. Not to be overlooked, credit to Frédéric Weber and his team. Drink 2025-2042.

The 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

The Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. A brooding powerhouse but it is also light on its feet with an interesting complex mix of red and black fruit, plus the more open structure from whole bunch.

This magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The grapes are one-third fermented as whole clusters and then aged in 25% new casks to produce a very aromatic nose with expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, pepper and spice. On the palate the wine is tightly wound, with firm tannins but lots of finesse and a fine acidity that carries this to an impressive finish. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The slope in this part of Beaune is considered the best terroir in the commune, despite the lack of Grand Cru status. In Les Greves, a gentle, southeasterly exposure gives the vines plentiful sunshine during the day, which helps with the development of sugar and phenols in the grapes. This is tempered by cooler evenings, which slow this ripening process and leads to a retention of acidity, making for balanced wines. These wines are among the most respected made in Beaune, rivaled only by the wines made in the tiny neighboring Premier Cru vineyard, Sur les Greves.

Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Very expressive nose with aromas of dark to black cherries, violets, dried clove and hints of anise blooming out of the glass. Some forest floor and spicy cedar notes also chime in. Rich dark to black cherry and wild strawberry fruits power across the palate with some anise, clove, forest floor and spicy cedar elements lying underneath. Slightly grainy in its feel with relatively polished tannins for Pommard. Concludes long, deeply fruited and expansive.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Once again there is a coolness to the markedly restrained aromas of airy red and dark pinot fruit, pungent earth and smoke. The middle weight flavors are not as dense or voluminous, but they are definitely stonier and particularly so on the linear and borderline strict finish. This youthfully austere effort is a bit awkward today, but it appears to have the stuffing to fill out in time and my projected range confers the benefit of the doubt in this regard. Drink to 2028+.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range.
