Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2016 Domaine Armand Rousseau Clos de la Roche Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1799. 00Bottle$21588.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
When I tasted the 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from barrel, I wasn't convinced that it could match Rousseau's finest recent renditions of this cuvée such as the 2012, 2010 or 2005. From bottle, the wine has closed the gap, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, ripe red berries, raw cocoa, beetroot and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a pretty core of fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and lively acids. This is a delicate, sapid Clos de la Roche that will drink well with a decade of bottle age. Drink 2026-2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)(25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky nose combines purple fruits, mocha, brown spices and game, along with some subtle earth notes. The sweetest of these 2016s to this point but also fine-grained and elegant, with its intense fruit and soil flavors nicely framed by lively acidity. Very rich, dense and alive. Offers a classic Clos de la Roche combination of fruits, spices and soil character.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Jan 2018)Reduction dominates the nose but I doubt that it will last as nuances of fruit are 'visible'. The broad-shouldered flavors possess even better size, weight and mid-palate concentration while offering fine power and drive on the sappy, complex and balanced finale. I very much like the overall sense of harmony though again, at least moderate patience is strongly advised. Drink through 2031+.
92-94 points
Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2018)Richer deeper bright colour, with a firmer more backward nose (compared to the Mazy-Chambertin). It has the same dark red cherry fruit profile but with a little extra intensity, certainly a memorable finish, tasted from one year old barrel.

Here there is an appealing array of floral elements present on the cool, pure and layered aromas of poached plum, dark berry coulis and earth hints. I like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the energetic, detailed and stony flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that is slightly less structured as well as a bit less complex, at least at present. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundBlended with 30% whole bunches and from a massal selection made in the nineties, the 2022 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, iris flower and crushed stone aromas. This is very terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It is elegant and harmonious, gently unfolding towards the finish with a sustained, slightly peppery aftertaste. A Maranges from the top drawer. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousA slightly deeper denser colour. The nose has a nutty note suggesting a light oxidation of the sample. There is a good density to the fruit, the right balance of fruit/acidity/ tannin but the actual style of the fruit is a little mixed up at the moment. Scored as the sample tasted but I expect the final wine will be better. Drink from 2027-2031.

Ripe and nicely fresh aromas include those of poached plum, purple fruit and plenty of earth character. There is a finer, but not denser, mouthfeel to the lightly stony middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the overtly saline finish. Like the Boutière, this too could use better depth so some patience should prove helpful. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus has a riper bouquet than the Prarons, with ebullient dark plum and boysenberry fruit, though maybe missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly more austere tannins. It's a bit sultry this Santenay, though there is a lovely touch of orange rind on the dense finish. Needs time. Drink 2025-2035.

Neal Martin - VinousMore purple than ruby. Quite an elegant bouquet, red berry and cherry elements. Red soil, more limestone than clay, on the rocks. Good acidity without much depth is typical. Slightly lighter bodied than Prarons with a racy red fruit, elegance too. Not obviously in the style of a ‘Charmes’ vineyard, but delicious. Drink from 2026-2030.

One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.
Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

A slightly riper but brooding nose only grudgingly reveals it aromas of dark berries, earth and a whiff of leather. The noticeably denser medium-bodied flavors are at once caressing but powerful with both mouthcoating sap and tannins on the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. This excellent effort also always needs time in bottle and 2022 will again be no different. Drink through 2034+.

Neal Martin - VinousA small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe parcel of Volnay Caillerets was the first Pinot picked in 2022 due to the thin soils and superficial nature of the limestone. The wine has an alluring aroma of blackberry and mulberry fruit with hints of boxwood, bay leaf, and peonies. The texture is supple and velvety, with rewarding concentration and density. The team at Bouchard sorts rigorously for 'figuée', grapes shrivelled by sunburn; technical director Frédéric Weber says success depends on 'keeping it crunchy'. Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comPurchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyProduced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The upper section has limestone close to the surface, giving lift and precision, while the lower section contains more red marl for depth and structure. Long recognised as a prime candidate for premier cru status, it produces wines that are refined yet firmly built.

Charming, fleshy and round, with a terra-cotta character behind the wealth of sour-cherry and red-berry aromas. Medium-bodied with elegant, silky tannins. Long, very elegant finish that's deftly underlined by the fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comOnce again very ripe yet agreeably fresh aromas display notes of poached plum, earth and spice along with a kirsch top note. The seductive, sappy and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as mineral-driven as those of the Clos du Roy but offer slightly better depth on the impressively long and youthfully austere finale. Situated in the centre of the Marsannay sector, La Charme aux Pretres has reddish-brown gravel over limestone bedrock. The high limestone content lends the wines tension and structure, with impressive capacity to age.

Light reduction blurs the nuances of what appears to be mostly ripe dark berry fruit aromas. More interesting are the generously proportioned and rich medium weight flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while exhibiting solid power on the saline, youthfully austere and firm finale. This is a seductive wine that should have no trouble repaying up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2031+.

I like the savory olive notes here, with peppercorns and salted almonds amongst the red berry fruit. Some nutmeg. Creamy and layered on the palate, with a medium body and silky yet very present tannins. Powerful fruit, with a deep savory and salty element. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

2019 Domaine Charles Audoin Pommard en MareauBurgundy, FRANCE$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkDomaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.
Other Reviews....
Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)Like the Fixin, this too is aromatically quite cool and restrained with its reticent aromas of herbal tea, red pinot fruit and discreet newly turned earth scents. The relatively suave and rounded medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

2020 Domaine Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$440. 00Bottle$5280.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.
What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.
Other Reviews....
Discreet but not invisible wood influence can be found on the ripe aromas of various dark berries, prominent earth and violet scents. Somewhat surprisingly in the context of the reported yields, the mid-palate is not especially dense though I very much like the beguiling texture that is at once caressing yet powerful before culminating in a precise, serious and equally austere if notably longer finale. This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Drink through 2030+.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was a blend of two instead of four cuvées this year due to the depleted production. It has a precocious bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, menthol and blood orange scents that gather momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with hints of allspice and tangy quince. It displays fine composure towards the finish with impressive length. This is a superb Clos des Epeneaux, though will it surpass the 2019? I’m not sure. Drink 2026-2050.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousI tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time.
90-94 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe final blend of this is superb, including both the energy of the young vines and the density of the old. They deliver a lush, spicy fruit with a strong mineral underpinning, a dense texture, firm but supple tannins and an infinitely rewarding finish. The Clos des Epeneaux is produced from a monopole of 5.23ha located at the juncture of Grands Epenots (20%) and Petits Epenots (80%). The clos is divided by regisseur Paul Zinetti into four main subdivisions by age of vine and underlying soils which are farmed and vinified separately. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. Drink 2025 - 2055.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2018)The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drink 2023-2045.

2022 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$2199. 00Bottle$26388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther reviews....
This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.
94-97 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is very attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, blood orange, rose petals and vine smoke. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's layered and fleshy, with a deep and seamless core of fruit that conceals powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a broad, perfumed finish. If this fulfills all its promise in bottle, it may make my score look conservative.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)As mentioned in the introduction, there are seven separate parcellaire cuvées of Musigny which will be blended. We tried four of them, representing different sectors. Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out. Drink from 2035-2050.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, cassis, dark chocolate, peony and caramelized orange rind, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and elegantly fine boned, with chalky structuring tannins, a pure core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.
92-94+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2019)The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. Drink 2024-2048.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundHealthy dark red with ruby tones. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a violet topnote. Tight and minty on entry, then a bit more pliant in the middle, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its dark flavors of black cherry, spices and minerals. Finishes with substantial tooth- and tongue-dusting tannins. This wine also had a late malo and comes off as very backward today, in need of more élevage to gain in flesh and sweetness.

The 2022 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has an open and expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor scents, with a hint of morels in the background. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
