Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a bright and youthful nose. Fine delineation with exuberant dark berry fruit, this still needs more bottle age to subsume the oak. Wonderful redcurrant, cranberry notes develop, with orange blossom hints. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins and exquisite balance, yet it clams up toward the finish. Huge potential, but it needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. Drink 2028-2048.

Domaine Rousseau owns one-third of the clos, with most of it in the sunniest and warmest spot against the wall. This combines impressive depth and structure with the freshness that you always get in the best wines from this renowned premier cru. Aged in 70% new wood, this has the concentration and texture to age impressively in bottle. Drink 2026-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

Here the wood treatment is equally subtle on the restrained nose that displays fresh and cool aromas of red currant, wet stone, tea and forest floor. Like the Ruchottes the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is quite sleek and ultra-intense while flashing plenty of minerality on the strikingly well-detailed finish that displays focused power and superb length. This is an exercise in harmony and grace and while it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, it should age effortlessly for several decades. Drink through 2032+.

Firmer and more compact than the supple, expressive Cazetiers, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notes of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and tensile, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it will require a bit of patience.

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed nose and is rather floral in style. Traces of blue fruit and pressed iris flower combine succinctly with the red fruit. Again, there is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's cohesive and smooth in texture, nothing weighty. The 2021 might lack density for some, but it is so harmonious and charming that you won't be able to resist. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)

Rousseau's Charmes is the first grand cru tasted in the cellar. The emphasis here is on the purity of fruit and silky expression rather than the lush density of some growers. There is a hint of spice to the ripe, ethereal cherry aromas, but there is no new wood in the maturation here – 'you have to avoid crushing it with new wood', according to Cyrielle. It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)

A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note. The supple but racy middleweight flavors aren't quite as concentrated but they're finer with retaining good power on the sour cherry-inflected finale that delivers excellent length. Lovely and a wine that should also repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Light to medium colour, not much nose is evident, discreet red fruit on the palate, perhaps over discreet for this cuvée, light fresh strawberry, with a trace of acidity. This may put on a little more weight later in life. Drink from 2026-2031.

When I tasted the 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru from barrel, I wasn't convinced that it could match Rousseau's finest recent renditions of this cuvée such as the 2012, 2010 or 2005. From bottle, the wine has closed the gap, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, ripe red berries, raw cocoa, beetroot and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a pretty core of fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and lively acids. This is a delicate, sapid Clos de la Roche that will drink well with a decade of bottle age. Drink 2026-2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

(25% new oak): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, musky nose combines purple fruits, mocha, brown spices and game, along with some subtle earth notes. The sweetest of these 2016s to this point but also fine-grained and elegant, with its intense fruit and soil flavors nicely framed by lively acidity. Very rich, dense and alive. Offers a classic Clos de la Roche combination of fruits, spices and soil character.

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (Jan 2018)

Reduction dominates the nose but I doubt that it will last as nuances of fruit are 'visible'. The broad-shouldered flavors possess even better size, weight and mid-palate concentration while offering fine power and drive on the sappy, complex and balanced finale. I very much like the overall sense of harmony though again, at least moderate patience is strongly advised. Drink through 2031+.

Richer deeper bright colour, with a firmer more backward nose (compared to the Mazy-Chambertin). It has the same dark red cherry fruit profile but with a little extra intensity, certainly a memorable finish, tasted from one year old barrel.

Pretty red berry fruit aromas are laced with earth and discreet spice wisps. The succulent, delicious and rounded flavors possess an attractive sense of energy while delivering good length on the only mildly rustic finish that is firm enough to repay 3 to 5 years of keeping if desired. The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge includes around 25% whole bunches. The bouquet offers red cherries and strawberry fruit, just a little earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins. It’s a strict and slightly austere Bourgogne Rouge that will deserve a year in bottle. Drink 2025-2030.

Here there is an appealing array of floral elements present on the cool, pure and layered aromas of poached plum, dark berry coulis and earth hints. I like the mid-palate mouthfeel of the energetic, detailed and stony flavors that conclude in a moderately rustic, youthfully austere and palate coating finish that is slightly less structured as well as a bit less complex, at least at present. Blended with 30% whole bunches and from a massal selection made in the nineties, the 2022 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry, iris flower and crushed stone aromas. This is very terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It is elegant and harmonious, gently unfolding towards the finish with a sustained, slightly peppery aftertaste. A Maranges from the top drawer. Superb. Drink 2027-2042.

A slightly deeper denser colour. The nose has a nutty note suggesting a light oxidation of the sample. There is a good density to the fruit, the right balance of fruit/acidity/ tannin but the actual style of the fruit is a little mixed up at the moment. Scored as the sample tasted but I expect the final wine will be better. Drink from 2027-2031.

Ripe and nicely fresh aromas include those of poached plum, purple fruit and plenty of earth character. There is a finer, but not denser, mouthfeel to the lightly stony middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the overtly saline finish. Like the Boutière, this too could use better depth so some patience should prove helpful. Drink through 2029+.

The 2022 Santenay Les Charmes-Dessus has a riper bouquet than the Prarons, with ebullient dark plum and boysenberry fruit, though maybe missing a little complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly more austere tannins. It's a bit sultry this Santenay, though there is a lovely touch of orange rind on the dense finish. Needs time. Drink 2025-2035.

More purple than ruby. Quite an elegant bouquet, red berry and cherry elements. Red soil, more limestone than clay, on the rocks. Good acidity without much depth is typical. Slightly lighter bodied than Prarons with a racy red fruit, elegance too. Not obviously in the style of a ‘Charmes’ vineyard, but delicious. Drink from 2026-2030.

This is the first wine in the range to display any reduction and here it's enough to suppress the fruit. Otherwise, there is slightly better volume to the equally stony and well-detailed medium weight flavors that terminate in an austere, moderately compact and sneaky long finish that is slightly less rustic. The 2022 Santenay Les Prarons-Dessus has an enticing bouquet, the 30% whole bunches discrete and enmeshed, raspberry and wild strawberry mixed with light lavender aromas. The medium-bodied palate has a sapid entry, but it feels quite pliant with black pepper and clove towards the finish. Quite "solid" at the moment; give this a few months to settle once in bottle. Very fine. Drink 2025-2035.

Not quite so deep in colour, more ruby crimson than purple. The bouquet is elegant, floral, with fresh red berries. After this accessible entry, the wine firms up a little on the palate, with a crunchy finish. All aspects are nicely in equilibrium. Drink from 2026-2031.

Benoit is the 4th generation of Chevallier vignerons in Vosne-Romanée, and from 2018 has taken over production of the domaine. One of the rare and exciting new names in Burgundy that are working their estate owned vines, Benoit has hit the ground running in very short time. His wines are bright, energetic, and concentrated and show wonderful structure.

Organic viticulture is practiced in each of the plots, and from there the grapes are treated with utmost care. After sorting in the vineyard, all bunches are destemmed gently to preserve full berries, and vinification takes place in cement and wooden vats, with macerations lasting two to three weeks with gentle pump-overs and occasional punch-downs. The village wines are aged 12-14 months and the rest for about 18 months in new to three–year-old oak, depending on the cuvee and vintage.

Light on it’s feet, it boasts superb power and a long, supple finish.

Domaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

Dark red core with black toned edges and a red tinged hue. Leading the way with a perfumed like intensity are aromas of violets, red to dark cherries, rhubarb and strawberry which are overlaid with spicy vanillin cedar, earth, dried herb and spice notes. Rich dark cherry, strawberry, spicy red plum and red liquorice fruits expand across the elegant palate like a peacocks tail. Earth, vanillin cedar, subtle bramble and dried herb elements lend further complexity. Light on it’s feet yet boasting superb power, it has seamlessly integrated, grainy tannins and a perfectly balanced freshness. Finishes long, supple and enveloping yet sturdy.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Here’s a deep and complex 2021 Beaune 1er Cru with stacks of dark earthy complexity as well as abundant red fruit character and a touch of smoky oak. The serious tannin structure engages the turbo, driving the wine relentlessly forward on the ample palate. Excellent freshness, too. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

This wine is among the most successful Beaune premier crus in 2021. The aromas begin with mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of earth, menthol, and smoke. Rich and substantial on the palate, it features surprisingly full body, firm tannins and rewarding length. The grapes are from the Bouchard monopole of nearly four hectares within Beaune Grèves. In 2021, 30% were fermented as whole clusters to ensure complexity and freshness. This should open well with a few years in bottle and age over the next two decades. Drink 2027-2045.

A slightly riper but brooding nose only grudgingly reveals it aromas of dark berries, earth and a whiff of leather. Here too there is a liqueur-like quality to the black cherry aromas that are nuanced by floral and spice hints. A small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036.

The parcel of Volnay Caillerets was the first Pinot picked in 2022 due to the thin soils and superficial nature of the limestone. The wine has an alluring aroma of blackberry and mulberry fruit with hints of boxwood, bay leaf, and peonies. The texture is supple and velvety, with rewarding concentration and density. The team at Bouchard sorts rigorously for 'figuée', grapes shrivelled by sunburn; technical director Frédéric Weber says success depends on 'keeping it crunchy'. This wine should open soon after release and is suited to mid-term cellaring, although a 1962 from this vineyard tasted this year was still fresh. Drink 2025-2050.

Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Pretty scents of violet, sour to red cherry and rhubarb emanate from the glass with some vanillin cedar, meaty characters, earth and subtle stalky dried herb notes also evident. Light in body and supple in its feel the palate features savoury red to dark cherry and rhubarb flavours over earth, vanillin cedar, dried herbs and spice. Polished tannin structure finishing fresh, elegant and long.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

The 2021 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet red fruit compote, spices and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with melting tannins and a pure, vibrant palate, it concludes with a long, saline finish.

The 2021 Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru was badly affected by the frost, cropped at 6-7hL/ha, due to it being located on a steep slope. It has an attractive red berry bouquet, very pure with impressive mineralité, hints of peony with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. The 50% whole bunches impart a discrete peppery note, very harmonious with quite a persistent finish. Not to be overlooked, credit to Frédéric Weber and his team. Drink 2025-2042.

Enough wood to notice surrounds the equally ripe aromas of mocha, black raspberry and spicy poached plum. The super-sleek, dense and wonderfully energetic medium-bodied flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannins shaping the youthfully austere, chiseled and sneaky long finish. If the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lovely spicy bouquet with clove and white pepper scents infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, taut and crisp, quite spicy and grippy towards the finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2045.

Another black colour with purple rim. The bouquet wants to offer some elegance despite the massive concentration of the vintage. Succulent dark raspberry, a glossy character also on the palate, firmer tannins behind for sure. Medium plus length and the useful acidity which picks out points of red fruit.

Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Cropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, plums, raw cocoa and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, fragrant finish.

The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru has a lively dark cherry, cranberry and mint-scented bouquet with light figgy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a little chewiness on the entry but there is fine acidity and a cohesive peppery finish. It seems to firm up in the glass, implying it will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2040.

Upfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Absolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time!

Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. Opening in the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries, cassis, orange rind, rich spices, loamy soil, black truffles and toasty new oak, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a rich, enveloping core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.

Deep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Produced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

There is a suggestion of herbal tea on the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and dark raspberry along with a hint of violet. There is a wonderful texture to the classy and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract before culminating in a compact, serious and built-to-age finish. Rich deep purple, slightly richer plum nose, sweet dark fruit, very powerful, almost too much. Dark black cherry with lush raspberry alongside. This is something of a fruit bomb at the moment, but will merit a higher rating if it refines and gains gravitas during the rest of the elevage.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. It expresses more delineation and detail than the Taillepieds, presenting a rather intoxicating mélange of red and black fruit laced with violet. It clams up a little toward the finish, and it will demand three or four years in bottle before it becomes approachable.

From an initial three hectares, it has grown to fourteen across many of the village's key sites. Since taking over in 2000, Cyril Audoin has brought a quiet precision to both vineyard and cellar, guiding the estate to organic certification and overseeing the construction of a purpose-built winery. Founded in 1972 by Charles and Marie-Francoise Audoin, Domaine Charles Audoin has been central to Marsannay's evolution into one of the Cote de Nuits' most engaging appellations. From an initial three hectares, it has grown to fourteen across many of the village's key sites. Since taking over in 2000, Cyril Audoin has brought a quiet precision to both vineyard and cellar, guiding the estate to organic certification and overseeing the construction of a purpose-built winery. The result is a style that feels unmistakably of Marsannay: pure, composed, and full of energy.

Sleek and racy with a wonderful freshness on the medium-bodied palate. High-toned red fruit and a radical stony minerality. Also graphite at the long, straight finish. From 70-year-old vines. From organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink or hold.

A slightly riper nose is comprised by notes of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and newly turned earth. The middle weight flavors are not as dense though they are slightly finer with more evident minerality as well that adds a sense of lift to the long and youthfully austere finale where an interesting hint of bitter orange peel slowly emerges. Recommended. Drink through 2030+.

Rich and well-structured, just as we expect the wines from this appellation to be. Plenty of blackberry, damson-plum and a touch of elderberry aromas. Abundant fine tannins and a touch of wet-earth character are wrapped in great fruit, right through the long, velvety finish with an animal flavor. From organically grown grapes. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. Drink or hold.

Firm reduction dominates the nose. On the palate there is both excellent detail and vibrancy if only average density to the delicious flavors that also conclude in a youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. Drink through 2029+.

A fleshy, mid weighted Pommard with rich dark to black fruit framed by a study structure.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

2022 will be the last vintage for this wine as the parcel was sold after the harvest.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Pronounced black cherry and anise aromas are to the fore with some fresh herb, earth and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich dark to black cherry and anise flavours dominate the fleshy textured, mid weighted palate with dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar, earth and fresh herb accents tailing off through the back half. Sturdy tannin structure with a long ripe dark to black fruited finish that carries some gentle grip.
    Cellar 5-6 years.

This is positively filigree for Pommard, an appellation associated with firmness and dry power. Delicate earthiness is deftly interwoven with the red-fruit character, only gaining the upper hand right at the finish.

A fresh if quite restrained, even timid, nose grudgingly displays notes of plum, dark currant and a touch of earth. There is again excellent vibrancy to the super-sleek and well-detailed middleweight flavors that are finer if less concentrated, all wrapped in a reasonably complex, persistent and mildly austere finale. Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a bright red hue. Sailing through the nostrils are dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry scents which are complimented by subtle scorched earth, dried herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich dark to black cherry, anise and strawberry flavours unfold across the palate with terrific power and intensity. Supple yet sturdy in its feel with grainy tannins providing underlying muscle. Infusions of dried herbs, earth and spicy cedar ensue. Deeply fruited it concludes long and expansive. Serious Burgundy structure here.

A slightly riper nose freely offers up notes of purple fruit, especially plum, along with hints of earth, the sauvage and underbrush. Rich, intense and powerful, a cascading wave of delicious dark cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits decorate the palate with a supple textural feel. Once again the nose of the essence of red cherry is super-fresh and markedly more floral in character. While the middleweight flavors are not as concentrated, they're even more mineral-driven and beautifully precise before culminating in a linear, youthfully austere and dusty finale. Plenty of dark forest-berry aromas, developing some roasted character with aeration. Super-concentrated and polished, this has fantastic energy on the medium- to full-bodied palate, the depth and finesse at the finish very impressive. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Rich and ripe, the 2022 Marsannay Clos de Jeu delivers notes of minty cherries, berries and spices deftly framed by new oak. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and fleshy, with attractive depth and plenitude, it concludes with an expansive finish.

This is also wonderfully fresh and bright with its array of relatively deeply pitched aromas of cassis, black raspberry and a hint of smoked meat character. The rich and quite generously proportioned medium weight flavors don't possess the same driving minerality but do offer even better power on the chalky and youthfully austere finish that could also use better depth so a few years of keeping should prove beneficial. Light on it’s feet, fresh and refined with expansive red to dark fruits.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are perfumed like aromas of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry which are complimented by hints of anise, earthy forest floor, spicy cedar and fresh herbs. Light on it’s feet, delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and subtle anise flavours flow across the palate with a feeling that’s both refined and supple. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy forest floor, delicate bramble and dried herb accents lend further interest. Showing ample freshness and polished tannins, it finishes expansive, savoury and spicy.

The 2022 Marsannay La Charme aux Prêtres unwinds in the glass with notes of cherries, cassis, mint and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep, dense and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish.

A long and beautifully refined Burgundy that’s understated in its power.

Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.
Showing plenty of depth is a dark red core that has black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Alluring scents of violets, red cherries and wild strawberries captivate the olfactory senses with whiffs of red liquorice, fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Long and beautifully refined across the palate with a beam of fresh acidity underpinning delicious red to dark cherry, a dash of sour cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar nuances lie underneath. Understated in its power it possesses a polished tannin structure and supple mid palate feel. The expansive finish one of elegance and great persistence.

Bright and giving, the 2022 Marsannay Les Longeroies bursts with scents of cherries, red berries, orange zest and peony. Medium to full-bodied, suave and fleshy, with an enveloping core of fruit and supple tannins, it concludes with a bright, mouthwatering finish.

This is aromatically similar to the Clos du Roy but with touches of plum and spice. The super-sleek, intense and velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors aren't quite as austere while displaying a similar level of minerality on the lingering finale that isn't quite as complex, though that of course may well change with cellar time. Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Soils here are light red with an element of sand, sitting atop a bedrock of hard limestone. Wines from Clos du Roy can be more elegant, aromatic, and approachable.
Red to dark red core with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Perfumed like in it’s intensity, the nose features alluring scents of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise which send the olfactory senses into a tail spin. Fresh herb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes are also evident. Rich, fleshy and possessing a gorgeous supple feel the palate is nonetheless fresh and light on its feet. Boasting a superb power wave, moreish red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours expand across the mouth like a peacocks tail. Adding further nuance are notions of spicy cedar, fresh herbs and forest floor. The wonderfully refined conclusion long, spicy and fresh.

What an enticing nose of red fruits with only a whiff of toasty oak. Charming and filigree with super-silky tannins and an underlying firmness supporting the medium- to full-bodied palate. Here a discreet application of wood surrounds the fresh, cool and restrained red and dark pinot fruit where a floral top note adds a touch of elegance. The more concentrated medium weight flavors possess excellent intensity while the moderately firm and youthfully austere finish flashes more evident minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. This is built to repay up to a decade of keeping but could reasonably be approached after 5 years. Drink through 2030+.

Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

What a fragrant and spicy nose, showing peppercorns, slate, chili chocolate, hazelnuts and bramble berry fruit. Incredible balance of both fruit and minerals, concentrated, with a medium body and creamy tannin frame. Long and somehow increasing in flavor. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

I like the savory olive notes here, with peppercorns and salted almonds amongst the red berry fruit. Some nutmeg. Creamy and layered on the palate, with a medium body and silky yet very present tannins. Powerful fruit, with a deep savory and salty element. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Like the Fixin, this too is aromatically quite cool and restrained with its reticent aromas of herbal tea, red pinot fruit and discreet newly turned earth scents. The relatively suave and rounded medium weight flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline-inflected and youthfully austere finale. This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

Produced from certified organic Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes. Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Fragrant spicy red plum, fresh herb, incense and earthy cedar scents mix with violet notes. Light, elegant and pretty, the palate is delicately flavoured with sour to red cherry fruits, infusions of incense, earth and spicy herbs. Bright crunchy like acidity with slightly chalky tannins and a tart finish.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

Domaine Comte Armand is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the village of Pommard. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.

What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.

Discreet but not invisible wood influence can be found on the ripe aromas of various dark berries, prominent earth and violet scents. Somewhat surprisingly in the context of the reported yields, the mid-palate is not especially dense though I very much like the beguiling texture that is at once caressing yet powerful before culminating in a precise, serious and equally austere if notably longer finale. This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was a blend of two instead of four cuvées this year due to the depleted production. It has a precocious bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, menthol and blood orange scents that gather momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with hints of allspice and tangy quince. It displays fine composure towards the finish with impressive length. This is a superb Clos des Epeneaux, though will it surpass the 2019? I’m not sure. Drink 2026-2050.

I tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time.

The final blend of this is superb, including both the energy of the young vines and the density of the old. They deliver a lush, spicy fruit with a strong mineral underpinning, a dense texture, firm but supple tannins and an infinitely rewarding finish. The Clos des Epeneaux is produced from a monopole of 5.23ha located at the juncture of Grands Epenots (20%) and Petits Epenots (80%). The clos is divided by regisseur Paul Zinetti into four main subdivisions by age of vine and underlying soils which are farmed and vinified separately. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. Drink through 2030+.

The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti. Drink 2025 - 2055.

The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drink 2023-2045.

Vibrant purple, still so youthful. There is an absolute explosion of rich dark cherry fruit, with 10% whole bunches included, which adds an extra tension. Really good acidity, despite the wealth of concentrated youthful fruit, great intensity behind. Tasted: October 2018

This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.

The 2022 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is very attractive, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, blood orange, rose petals and vine smoke. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's layered and fleshy, with a deep and seamless core of fruit that conceals powdery structuring tannins, concluding with a broad, perfumed finish. If this fulfills all its promise in bottle, it may make my score look conservative.

As mentioned in the introduction, there are seven separate parcellaire cuvées of Musigny which will be blended. We tried four of them, representing different sectors. Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out. Drink from 2035-2050.

A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. Drink 2028-2080.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
