Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2018 Domaine Dujac Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$420. 00Bottle$5040.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts exhibits a deep bouquet of cherries, plums, orange rind, smoked duck and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple palate that's succulent and charming, framed by powdery but not unduly assertive tannins.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a subtle Asian influence on the nose, offering well-defined aromas of hoisin and wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, quite saline in the mouth, with a sense of symmetry on the finish. Simply a class act.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousHere too a background application of wood can be found on the spicier and even more floral nose of liqueur-like red and dark raspberry, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. The beautifully well-detailed and more mineral-driven flavors possess a super-sleek texture before concluding in a dusty, youthfully austere and very firm finale. This is lovely but in contrast to the Combottes which might reasonably be approachable on the younger side, this is one to put away for at least a decade.

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is showing well in bottle, mingling notions of ripe blackberries, exotic spices, orange rind and sweet soil tones in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, lively and fleshy, with fine depth at the core and youthful back-end grip, it should evolve very nicely in the cellar.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is a cuvée that I tasted just after racking at the domaine so I deferred scoring. Now in bottle, it has a juicy crushed strawberry and cranberry bouquet with light incense aromas. The palate is smooth on the entry. Plenty of brambly red fruit is laced with sage and a pinch of sea salt. The stems impart a pleasant tertiary note on the finish that becomes spicier with time.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was also showing very well, offering up an expressive bouquet of ripe cherries, cassis, warm spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and textural, with a broad attack, good depth and energy at the core, powdery structuring tannins and a sapid finish.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru was showing a little reduction on the nose but there is plenty of attractive black currant and boysenberry fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, great mineralité and a precise, edgy finish that is quite Mazoyères in style. Great potential, but it will need some time.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousA ripe, fresh and unusually elegant, indeed even perfumed, nose displays notes of black raspberry, cassis and plenty of floral influences. There is both good focus and density to the suave yet quite powerful and vibrant medium weight flavors that culminate in a mildly warm, compact and rustic finale. This is both serious and firmly structured so once again, patience advised.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundDense black colour with a luxurious Charmes nose, probably from new oak, certainly gives it a firm framework which actually works to its advantage. The wood shows up at the back but it is the way this sample is showing. Will work very well in due course.

2018 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Magnum (1500ml)Burgundy, FRANCE$1399. 00Bottle$16788.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, dark chocolate, rose petals, orange rind, burning embers and spices, the 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep, concentrated and multidimensional core that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and impressively lively acids. This is a dramatic wine that hasn't yet shut down, but I wouldn't plan on opening bottles for at least a dozen years.
96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is probably now just a step ahead of the Clos Saint-Denis on the nose: stunning violet-infused red fruit with veins of blueberry that unfold exquisitely. The palate is silky smooth in texture, lightly spiced with a cornucopia of mineral-driven red fruit that convey just the right degree of flamboyance. Outstanding.
97 points
Neal Martin - VinousDiscreet but not imperceptible wood and menthol characters set off very ripe liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry, cassis, floral and plenty of sauvage nuances. The sleekly textured and impressively intense large-scaled flavors possess evident power on the dusty, serious and palate coating finish that is definitely quite grippy and a bit coarse, indeed even a bit chewy. I like the overall fruit/tannin/sap balance and while it will take extended bottle age, this borderline massive wine should eventually mature into a magnificent CdlR.
95 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundDense purple hugely enthusiastic nose, with class, some stems and perfectly judged fruit ripeness. We had the discussion about blueberry fruit in Clos de la Roche. Balanced and long.

2018 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$750. 00Bottle$9000.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Unfurling in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cassis, wild berries, rose petals, peonies and sweet soil tones, Dujac's 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cruis is full-bodied, lively and incisive, with a muscular and tight-knit core, racy acids and a long, chalky finish. As usual, this is one of the tightest-knit, most overtly mineral reds in the cellar, and it will demand patience.
94-96+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is blessed with one of my favorite aromatics from Dujac this year, featuring black cherries, raspberry, crushed stone and pressed iris flower, all quite restrained for a Bonnes-Mares but showing outstanding focus. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, a fine line of acidity and a strict and quite linear finish that lingers long in the mouth. Outstanding.
95-97 points
Neal Martin - VinousSoft reduction is enough to push the underlying fruit and floral scents to the background. Otherwise there is really lovely energy to the cool and restrained yet muscular medium-bodied flavors that are compact, firm and a bit drying on the short finish. Based on the structure, this may well be a fruit/tannin race as this ages and overall I found this to be well below its usual excellent level.
89-91 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundDense imperial purple, with a nose that takes coaxing but is remarkably complex. Some quality oak behind this summer pudding of a wine. It is going to be a Rubens beauty in due course. Bonnes Mares seems to fall into two camps: those that got hit by the heat and drought and those that blossomed. This is in the latter category.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is also showing very well, exhibiting aromas of Griotte cherries, raspberries and blood orange, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and youthfully structural, its ample chassis of surprisingly muscular but powdery tannin cloaked in succulent fruit. It's promising, but based on this showing, it will also require patience.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers copious black cherry and bilberry on the very pure nose, along with gorgeous incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and slightly chalky in texture, with a Morey-Saint-Denis–like structure toward the serious finish. Good potential.
89-91 points
Neal Martin - VinousAn attractively layered nose combines notes of red currant, raspberry and soft floral and spice wisps. The almost painfully-intense medium weight flavors display good detail on the somewhat rustic and robust finish that is overtly tannic and borderline tough.

Dujac's 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is showing especially well, unwinding in the glass with scents of rose petals, sweet red berries, raw cocoa, spices and blood orange. Full-bodied, layered and lively, with an ample core of beautifully pure fruit and velvety structuring tannins, it's a concentrated but precise Clos Saint-Denis that's built for the long haul.
96+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru builds on the promise that it showed in bottle. it has a sublime bouquet with blackberry and wild strawberry, ground gravel and orange rind. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth and very supple tannins, a touch of brown spice infusing the fleshy red fruit with a long and tender finish that has shaken off the austerity it showed out of barrel. Superb.
96 points
Neal Martin - VinousThis is actually quite aromatically similar to the Clos de la Roche but a touch more elegant with its greater emphasis on spice and floral influences. There is excellent volume to the seductively textured, fleshy and succulent medium weight flavors that firm up immediately on the super-sleek and refined finish. This needs to develop more depth but there is so much underlying material, and the structure to complement it, that it should gradually develop. Like the Clos de la Roche, the tannins are very prominent, so patience is once again strongly suggested.
95 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundRipe purple, for me this does not quite sing through so much as Clos de la Roche. Reserved but suggestive of a very pure clear and balanced fruit. Barrel gives a lactic element. Good acidity. This is biding its time but I suspect it is all there. Jeremy Seysses is a fan. Another barrel was more expressive, with a sumptuous raspberry fruit that is not cooked at all, and good acidity. Very promising.

The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru is a promising cuvée in the making, mingling aromas of dark berry fruit, cassis and cherries with notions of burning embers, dried flowers and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and ripely tannic, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, lively acids, and a well-defined finish.
92-94+ points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru had been racked the day prior to my visit. That said, the bouquet is very well defined, offering black cherries, raspberry, rosemary and pressed rose petal aromas that blossom with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, good depth and precision, revealing bitter cherry and a touch of balsamic toward the finish. Very good potential.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe wood treatment is more evident though it certainly doesn't intrude on the exceptionally spicy and very floral aromas that reflect notes of cassis, plum, exotic tea and a touch of violet. The medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive and succulent mid-palate that contrasts markedly with a powerful but grippy and slightly drying finish. Again, the open question is whether this will eventually harmonize?

Dujac's 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is more reserved that the Clos Saint-Denis, unwinding in the glass with scents of red berries, plums, orange rind, cinnamon, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, serious and layered, with muscular structure, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. While this remains a comparatively accessible, finesse-driven Clos de la Roche, at least a decade's patience will be required to see this begin to realize its potential.
94 Points
Wine AdvocateThe average age of the Seysses' 1.95ha holdings in the Clos de la Roche are slightly older than those of neighbouring Clos St-Denis. Using fruit from five main parcels, it's a very complete, self-confident wine with good density and concentration, sappy, spicy undertones, fine-grained fruit and tannins, and a very long, tapering finish.
97 Points
DecanterThis is also markedly floral in character with additional breadth from the impressively pure combination of red cherry, currant, leather and a whiff of the sauvage along with a touch of oak. The beautifully energetic and detailed flavors are much finer than usual thanks mostly to the ultra-fine grain of the supporting tannins supporting the austere, serious and compact finish. This is a Dujac CdlR of refinement rather than one of imposing size and weight but even so, it is clearly constructed for the longer haul and it wouldn't surprise me if it needed 20+ years to fully mature.

Dujac's vines in this parcel are over 80 years old, but they delivered a record yield this year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has quite a savory bouquet, touches of dried blood infusing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. This is nicely balanced, though quite sturdy at the moment, with a backward, surly finish. Give it two or three years in bottle.
90-92 points
Neal Martin - Vinous (Jan 2019)A discreet application of wood sets off the cool aromas of mostly red berry fruit aromas that are cut with both floral and soft spice wisps. Wine AdvocateAn exceptionally pretty and, similar to the Malconsorts, somewhat sweet nose combines notes of lavender, rose petal, violet, red currant and a whiff of orange pekoe tea. There is good if not special mid-palate density to the overtly intense flavors that terminate in a dusty, austere and reasonably powerful finish where the tannins are a bit spiky. My sense is though that with a few years of age they will round off and render the finish more harmonious.

Dujac's single 0.23ha parcel in the lower part of Les Champs Traversins is one of their younger vineyards, having been planted in the early 1980s. Drinking Window 2022 - 2030.

DecanterThe 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru is also showing very well, having gained in depth and precision in the year since I last tasted it. Opening in the glass with aromas of red berries, cherries, orange rind, sweet soil tones, spices and peonies, it's medium to full-bodied, with a broader, more textural attack than the Malconsorts, underpinned by similarly powdery tannins and lively acids. This looks to be a longer-haul proposition than I had imagined, and at least a modicum of patience will be in order.
94 points
Wine AdvocateA strikingly floral-suffused nose offers up a mix of violet, lavender and rose petal that adds elegance to the blend of red cherry aromas that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is fine intensity to the beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied and subtly mineral-driven flavors that possess a gorgeous mouthfeel, indeed the mid-palate is almost lacy, that gives way to an attractively textured and dusty finale. This isn't particularly dense but like the Malconsorts, it's really quite lovely in its fashion.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a well defined bouquet of red and black fruit, the hints of black olive and light undergrowth turning into more tea leaf and bay leaf aromas. Wine AdvocateThe Dujac holdings in this large and heterogeneous Gevrey grand cru are divided between four blocks, totalling 0.75ha and planted in the 1950s and 1970s. DecanterThe sauvage-suffused nose reflects a bit more wood on the cool and pure essence of red berry fruit nose that projects plenty of floral, earth, forest floor and anise elements. The rich and muscular medium weight plus flavors display touches of salinity and youthful austerity on the otherwise sneaky long finish. VinousA strikingly floral nose of mostly red berry fruit and spice elements is more elegant if, somewhat surprisingly as it's not usually the case, less complex though that may change as this ages. 2018 Domaine Duroche Gevrey Chambertin En ChampBurgundy, FRANCE$185. 00Bottle$2220.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Duroche is one of the brightest stars to appear in the Burgundy landscape over recent years, and with numerous comparisons to Domaine Rousseau the wines are now incredibly hard to come by. While the name is relatively new to the world, the family have been making wine in Gevrey Chambertin since 1953, and early on they aquired fantastic plots of Gevrey villages, premier cru and Grand Cru including Chambertin Clos de Beze. The wines are incredibly pure, have excellent concentration and depth, and show a fantastic translation of site.
Other Reviews....
Le Clos is followed by the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin En Champ, from a parcel planted between 1969 and 1973 on the Brochon side of the appellation where soils are stonier. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, cassis, forest floor and truffles, it's medium to full-bodied and a bit more tangy and structured, with good length and definition on the finish.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champ shows a little more amplitude than the regular Gevrey Village. Perfumed wilted rose petal scents and crushed stone infuse the transparent red fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a crunchy opening. A brittle-boned Gevrey (and I write that in a positive sense) with a stony, mineral-driven finish. Great persistence here. Superb.
89-91 points
Neal Martin - VinousClassy dense purple, with a little touch of reduction. Super-succulent with an intensity at the back of the palate, specifically dark raspberry along with the more characteristic strawberry fruit, and a really long, finely balanced finish. This is exceptional for village Gevrey. I love the finish.

Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels (30% of which are new). Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant red to dark red hue. Fragrant scents of violet, freshly crushed cherries and wild strawberries sail out of the glass trailed by some anise, fresh herb and blueberry spice notes. Light, juicy and fresh, the palate sports cherry and wild strawberry fruits over a delicate back drop of anise, fresh herb infusions, earth and spice. Bright acidity and polished tannins with a refined amply fruited conclusion.

Very ripe though again, attractively fresh aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, cassis, the sauvage and a pretty spice nuances, especially anise. The supple and somewhat surprisingly, not especially dense flavors possess a caressing mouthfeel before terminating in a vibrant and sneaky long finish that firms up significantly as it sits on the palate. As always with this ageworthy wine, patience absolutely required. Drink: 2037+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundMingling deep fruit tones evocative of red cherries and plums with notions of loamy soil, licorice, orange rind, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2020 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, tangy acids and a long, saline finish. This is extremely promising.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru has quite a rich and outgoing bouquet, plenty of mulberry fruit here laced with touches of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, quite ripe and slightly confit towards the finish, generous but let’s see how long-term it is. Drink 2025-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousOne of the denser deeper darker colours here, and a somewhat brooding nose. There is power in this part of Corton. A miserly 20 hl/ha and 14% alcohol. Some sun-dried cherries alongside the ultra-ripe raspberry in this super-concentrated wine. A little whiff of vanillin behind. Long and substantial.

An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of even more restrained notes of black cherry, earth, the sauvage and discreet spice nuances. The sleek, intense, refined and mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess cuts-like-a-knife delineation on the youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. Note that this is quite firm and will need time to both add depth and further flesh out. Drink: 2035+.

Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a layered, vibrant core of fruit, concluding with a chalky finish.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the best Faiveley wines on the nose: very good definition and mineralité here, poised and focused, not shortchanging anyone in terms of power. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity and grip with a dense and quite weighty finish, yet it manages to maintain finesse. Uncompromising...in a good way. Drink: 2026-2050.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousMedium full purple, this has a lively full raspberry note without exaggeration. There is a just a little bit of white pepper here too, like the Lavaux, but it doesn’t come from whole bunch. Moderate wood influence frames the perfumed and elegant aromas of black cherry, hoisin, violet, lavender and exotic tea. Here too there is excellent mid-palate density and volume to the rich and opulent medium weight plus flavors that retain reasonably good detail on the austere bitter cherry-inflected and slightly warm finale that goes on and on. This isn't quite as complex as the Clos de Vougeot but that may well change if given adequate time. Drink: 2032+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Echézeaux En Orveau Grand Cru (the lieu-dit has been stated on the label since 2018) has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with dark cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry fruit, the marl terroir coming through with time. A discreet though still easily perceptible dollop of wood sets off very earthy aromas of various dark berries, humus and old leather. 'La Combe Aux Moines' refers to the monks of Cluny who, during the construction of the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin, would gather in the valley after a hard day of work in the vineyards. The soils are the same as in 'Les Cazetiers' (fossiliferous rock and white marls) although this climat is located slightly higher up.

The rich and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors possess superb focus along with an abundance of minerality that seems to build on the complex, refined and highly persistent finish. This classy and harmonious effort should amply repay extended cellaring.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOne of the finest cuvées in the portfolio is once again the 2019 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered wine of unerring precision. Vibrant and multidimensional, it evokes aromas of dark berries, rose hip, bergamot, spices and black truffle. This will be worth a special effort to seek out.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)The 2019 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has more cohesion and intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, presenting lovely brambly red berry fruit mingled with potpourri and light loamy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, taut and crisp, displaying good depth and an animated chalky, briny finish. Classic in style, this is a superb Latricières from Faiveley, though it will need cellaring.

Neal Martin - VinousExcellent depth of crimson purple. The bouquet is immediately striking for its depth of fruit, sense of nobility, and no sign of an over hot vintage. The oak is very well judged here and the wine comes through with superb depth and balance. Better yield here. The fruit has a small liquorice note at the end, very well integrated with the pure red fruit.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers comes from Faiveley’s substantial four-hectare parcel. I find this has more gumption and detail than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques at the moment. The nose features layers of blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, and the sweet, candied palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. Blood orange and quince infuse the red fruit toward the finish. Excellent. Drink 2022 - 2038.

Neal Martin - VinousHere the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. The highly energetic and delineated middle weight plus flavors exude noticeable minerality on the powerful and focused finish that displays outstanding depth and persistence. Moreover, the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundConcentrated powerful purple, with significant intensity on the nose. Very slightly vegetal, but there is a sumptuous richness of fruit behind, though remaining quite fluid in style.

Good dark red. Pure, cool, very reticent aromas of raspberry, redcurrant and licorice plus a positive hint of mustard seed. Backward and unforthcoming on the palate as well, showing subtle saline mineral and soil tones but little easy sweetness or fleshiness. Finishes with slightly granular but ripe tannins and very good length.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousDiscreet wood easily allows the overtly sauvage and earth-infused aromas of dark berries and humus to shine. The intense, muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess good minerality that really comes up on the austere and sneaky long finale. Textbook CAM.

Bright dark red. Reduced on the nose. Then silky, penetrating and classically dry on the palate, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its flavors of black fruits, smoke and minerals. The serious, granular tannins reach the front teeth. Very tactile wine but a bit youthfully stunted.
91-93 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousReduction and wood currently overshadow the underlying fruit. There is first-rate intensity and power to the concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvet-textured mid-palate while delivering outstanding length on the balanced and only mildly rustic finale. If this can add even more depth it could very well merit the upper end of my predicted range. In sum, this is a classic example and as such, it's very much destined for a long snooze in a cold cellar.

2016 Domaine Faiveley Latricieres Chambertin Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Aromas of dark berries and coffee with cream on top. At once densely packed and perfumed in the mouth, with crushed raspberry and cranberry flavors lifted by violet. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with terrific class and ineffable rising perfume of spices and flowers. The tannins here are linear and firm but not hard. A very classy, scented grand cru in the making.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousHere too the wood treatment is subtle yet just prominent enough to warrant pointing out on the cool, pure and notably more sauvage nose of both red and dark wild berry and earth scents. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension suffusing the much more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that are not quite as rich but notably more precise on the chiseled and wonderfully refined finish. Textbook.

2015 Domaine Faiveley Volnay Santenots 1er CruBurgundy, FRANCE$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots offers up a brooding bouquet of cassis, wood smoke and dark chocolate, subtly framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and chewy, with nice depth and dimension, good acids and a formidable chassis of tannin that's classic Santenots. There's a lot of substance here, but it will demand some patience, especially if it shuts down further in the next year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate #236 (Apr 2018)Bright ruby-red. Perfumed scents of blueberry, blackberry and bitter chocolate show little of the peppery quality of the Frémiets. Suppler, sweeter and more pliant in the mouth, communicating a plush quality to its enticing raspberry fruit. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and noteworthy length.
90-92 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousA suave customer, featuring ripe black cherry, black currant and violet aromas and flavors wrapped in a coating of spicy oak. Even the tannins feel polished and well-behaved, adding support without being too obtrusive. Shows fine harmony and length overall. Best from 2020 through 2036.

Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorA beautifully complex nose exhibits spicy and soft earth red and blue pinot fruit aromas that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is excellent mid-palate density to the tautly muscular medium weight flavors that also brim with dry extract and minerality before terminating in a gorgeously long and well-balanced finale.

This is completely different with its brooding and reserved nose of ripe extract of black cherry along with plenty of earth, floral and sauvage hints. The powerful and concentrated middle weight plus flavors possess a lush and velvety mouth feel while displaying ample muscle on the structured, serious and impressively persistent finale. Like the Clos de l'Ecu, this moderately rustic effort will need patience.

Allen Meadows - Burghound(25% vendange entier; 35% new oak; from very dry soil that suffered from the drought in 2015): Bright red-ruby. Tight, medicinal scents of black cherry, spices and licorice. Offers subtle sweetness in the middle but a peppery quality to the dark fruit flavors suggests that this fruit did not have the flavor development of the Chaignots. Flous will give this wine a longer élevage in order to polish its serious dusty tannins. Still, this is in a relatively tough style for the year.

Bright ruby-red. Alluring floral nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, violet and licorice. A savory and rather refined young Clos Vougeot, offering subtle notes of dark berries, flowers and earth rather than this grand cru's more typical black cherry and herb qualities. Nothing rustic about this highly promising Clos Vougeot!
92-94 points
Stephen Tanzer - VinousHere too the wood treatment isn't subtle though it doesn't completely mask the mostly red berry fruit, earth and humus aromas. Once again there is both good volume and mid-palate density to the mouth coating big-bodied flavors that flash a mild touch of rusticity on the impressively long finale. Interestingly, this is a bit less youthfully austere than it usually is and overall, color me impressed.

Earthy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in a discreet touch of wood spice are laced with earth, forest floor and violet hints. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. This is quite serious and clearly very structured yet it stops short of being overtly old school in style; that said, this will not be an early drinker.

Allen Meadows - Burghound(Faiveley has one parcel in the middle of the Clos and two at the bottom): Bright red with ruby tones. Pungent aromas of black cherry, crushed strawberry, licorice and flowers complicated by a hint of menthol minerality. A dense fruit bomb on the palate, with its strawberry and cherry flavors given grip and lift on the back end by substantial dusty tannins, which are not yet as well integrated as those of the Echézeaux. Not at all a high-pH style of Clos Vougeot in spite of its lingering salty character. Erwan Faiveley described 2015 as a great vintage for Clos Vougeot, adding that 2014 was also very good. But many of their vines in this grand cru were burned by the late-April frost in 2016, he added.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousThe aromas are of very subtle gun metal, dark berries and flowers. Full-bodied, dense and silky with a minerally undertone and hints of salt. Long and beautiful. Crunch acidity. Drink in 2021. Clos de Vougeot from Faiveley excells in hot and dry years like this.

Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousTouches of wood and menthol can be found on the brooding and inexpressive nose of plum, dark cherry liqueur, freshly turned earth and a gamy note. Bright red with ruby tones. Very pure, youthfully medicinal aromas of black raspberry, violet and menthol. Wonderfully rich and subtly sweet, offering grand cru volume and depth to its flavors of red and darker berries, licorice, spices and minerals. This utterly suave wine boasts a rare combination of ripeness and coolness. The youthfully medicinal finish mounts slowly, with saline soil and mineral tones emerging as the wine opens in the glass. Splendid potential.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousA deep and complex wine that makes this site often referred to be the best of Nuits St. Georges. A potential Grand Cru. The dense structure and impressive tannins extend through the long, velvet finish. You can drink this now for the generous blue fruits, but if you want all the minerality give it five, ten or more years of aging.

jamessuckling.comA broad-ranging nose features notes of red and dark raspberry, cherry, lavender, earth and a suggestion of the sauvage, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. Bright, dark red-ruby. Knockout sappy nose combines black raspberry, crushed rock and white pepper. Boasts remarkable intensity and clarity--not to mention class--to its flavors of raspberry, spices and pungent minerals. Wonderfully sappy and dense but almost magically light on its feet. This sharply delineated wine finishes with ineffable rising perfume and outstanding length. This wine manages to combine the best traits of Faiveley's other Gevrey grand crus--not to mention the finest qualities of the 2016 vintage--in an utterly weightless package.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousThis is softly oaky with a wonderfully spicy array of black cherry, pungent earth and evident sauvage nuances that can be found on the impressively rich and seductively textured broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors that coat the palate with extract, all wrapped in a balanced, long and deep finish. Note that plenty of patience is a requisite here and it would be largely pointless to open a bottle before its 10th anniversary.

Dark red with ruby highlights. Complex, inviting aromas of black raspberry, peony, toast, smoke and game. Compellingly rich, creamy wine with a captivating mixture of dark berries, flowers and toasty oak. Maintains its thickness and body straight through to the very ripe, long, suavely tannic finish. A beauty.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousA pungent nose of wood and reduction renders the nose impossible to evaluate fairly. Otherwise there is a super-sleek and intense palate impression to the imposingly-scaled flavors that possess more size and weight if slightly less minerality than those of the Latricières while flashing excellent length on the moderately austere finish. This is also textbook.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
