2022 Occhipinti SP68 Rosso Frappato Nero d'AvolaSicily, ITALY$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 11%Closure: CorkOcchipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines, and their tiny production is highly sought after. Situated a mere 15km from the Mediterranean, the vineyards are 250m above sea level planted to Frappato and Nero d’Avola. Winemaking is natural and hands off, with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling.
SP68 is named after the road that borders the estate and is a blend of Frappato and Nero d’Avola.
Other Reviews....
The remarkably pretty 2022 Rosso SP68 is perfumed with a blend of violets, roses, white pepper and dried strawberries. This is built on purity, with sweet herbal tones accentuating citrus-tinged wild berry fruits, all energized by brisk acidity. The SP68 finishes with a gentle, cheek-puckering tension, leaving a lovely lavender hint to fade slowly. Drink 2023-2026.

Eric Guido - VinousNamed after the road that flanks the estate, Sp68 is an entry-level blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato. It offers a taste of the estate’s signature style at an affordable price, displaying inviting aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries, with some floral and herbal elements in the background. Ripe acidity underpins the mid-weight core of sweet red fruits, making for a deliciously easy-going mouthfeel with a briny and peppery finish. Aged for approximately six months in concrete vats. 2018 Opus OneNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenClosure: CorkOpus One is the partnership venture between Napa Valley legend Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe Rothschild of Mouton Rothschild. While the first vintage was 1979, it's the recent vintages which now include fruit from the famed To Kalon vineyard that has elevated quality and the wine now better reflects its reputation. This 2018 vintage is the product of an idyllic growing season, generally a dry year with well timed rainfall allowing perfectly ripened grapes in higher than average quantity; a rarity.
Other Reviews....
Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Opus One soars out of the glass with bright, bold boysenberries, warm cassis and ripe, juicy black plums notes, plus emerging nuances of lilacs, oolong tea, cinnamon stick, tilled soil and black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with tightly wound layers of crunchy black fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with lifted fruitiness and on a lingering mineral note. Drink 2024 - 2058.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Feb 2021)Extremely perfumed and floral with lavender, lilacs and violets to the sweet, ripe berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants. Some slate and graphite, too. It’s full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes. Fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and lemon grass highlight the dark fruit. The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement. Lasts for minutes. So wonderful to taste now, but better after 2026.

James SucklingThe 2018 Opus One is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This deep purple-hued effort leans to lively, fresher side of the vintage but has a brilliant, utterly classic style in its crème de cassis and blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of lead pencil, candied violets, damp earth, and chocolate-like nuances. With a Pomerol-like elegance and purity, it's medium to full-bodied and has wonderful tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It plays in the finesse-driven end of the spectrum yet is concentrated and seamless, with serious length. It offers pleasure today but should benefit from 4-5 years in the cellar, and my money is on it evolving for 30 years or more. Drink 2025 - 2057.

Jeb DunnuckPower and concentration from the start but with a lovely vein of cool blue fruits and an invigoratingly fresh core. Dark chocolate, coffee, blueberries and pomegranate combine to give a seductive nose and follow through on the palate with an immediate burst of juicy acidity and plush tannins. Layered and nuanced, the texture is striking, elegant and precise with juice that his the side of the mouth supported by oak spice that gently frames the overall feeling giving balance. Abundant in a sense but also reigned in making you want another glass straight away. 80% wild yeast fermentation for the first time as of the 2018 vintage. Drink 2024 - 2040.

After cool, damp weather at flowering, the 2021 vintage in Martinborough was never going to be a bountiful one, but the second half of the season was regarded by many growers as near perfect and the quality of what was finally harvested in this North Island Pinot-Noir hotspot was enviable. Deep scarlet in colour, the aromas of this forthright, vital Pinot evoke both raspberries and plums. On the palate, too, the wine is energetic and exuberant; its structure derives from that force of fruit, darkened by oak and lifted by ripe, fruit-dense acidity rather than tannins. The overall mouthfeel, thus, is smooth rather than grippy, despite this impressive depth of fruit. This is assured Pinot Noir from one of the southern hemisphere’s reference zones.

I've long loved the pinot noirs from Pegasus Bay. There's a minerally vibe that always draws me in. Complex and meaty with herbal and floral nuance that keeps shifting in the glass, keeping the old schnozz on its toes. The interplay of fruit, acidity and tannin is fascinating; kinetic and sinewy with a gentle struck-flint reduction lending added complexity as the wine slowly trails off. Drink by 2036.

1998 PetrusPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$11999. 00Bottle$143988.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The greatest wine produced at this estate since the formidable duo of 1989 and 1990 is the 1998 Pétrus, a magical bottle that is a lot more complex and expressive today than was the case only a handful of years ago. Bursting with aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, violets, licorice and black truffle, it's full-bodied, rich and seamless, with incredible depth at the core, beautifully refined tannins and a long, resonant finish. Even though this is probably the richest, most textural wine of the vintage, the 1998 isn't quite as broad and concentrated as the 1989, but if anything, it's even more precise and delineated. Drink 2020 - 2060.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Dec 22, 2023)The 1998 Petrus never fails to deliver. This is a fabulous example that confirms it is a true tour de force. It has a compelling bouquet with mineral-rich black and red fruit with unerring purity. In this bottle, I notice a hint of hickory not observed previously. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins, perfect acidity and a sense of tension that counterbalances the sheer power and ambition of this, the best Bordeaux of the vintage bar none. I was not quite moved to give this a perfect three-figure score, but it flirts with perfection. Tasted at the Petrus dinner at Hide restaurant in London and at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong. Drink 2020-2060.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Dec 2019)The 1998 Petrus goes from strength to strength as it ages. It's a perfect wine and the wine of the vintage with Le Pin and Cheval Blanc. I was lucky enough to drink some over the weekend when a friend brought a bottle to dinner. It was stunning. It's so deep and characterful yet refined and subtle. It showed aromas of wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dry black olives came out as well. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Very fresh and just opening up now. Walnut and chocolate character. So youthful. Decant two or three hours before serving.

James Suckling (June 2016)Richly-scented like you wouldn't believe, earthy truffle, undergrowth, black olive and rosemary fill the glass as your nose hovers over it, and don't let up right through the palate, providing waves of first aroma then flavour. At 22 years old this provides apt evidence of why Petrus 1998 is a legend of 20th century wine. The vintage plays to all of Petrus' strengths; a classic Merlot year that here combines velvety soft-edged tannins that caress and cushion the abundant black cherry, blackberry and bilberry fruit. Traces of campfire, mocha and liquorice are shot through every mouthful, and this is just so good. Jean-Claude Berrouet was at the helm at this point, expertly conducting the many strands of the wine. Harvest September 21, 22 and 23. A small yield meant just 2,400 cases compared to the usual 4,000. 50% new oak. Drink 2020 - 2032.

Jane Anson - Decanter (Sept 2020)It is out of my price range, but if you have the coin or friends with the bank, if you are seeking a Petrus with some age that is really hitting all the right notes, 1998 is the wine to buy. The wine is loaded from start to finish with chocolate-coated cherries, truffles, flowers, plums, smoke, touches of blue fruits, and a mild touch of menthol. Full-bodied, rich, opulent, silky, and fresh, the wine is polished, refined, intense, and palate-coating with purity and length. Drink from 2023-2050.

The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)The 2021 Quintus is the most elegant wine I have ever tasted here, by a wide measure. Nearly half of this fruit is from the former Grand Pontet property, and that fruit seems to bring a measure of aromatic intensity and freshness these wines have lacked in some vintages. All the elements are so well balanced. Bright saline notes linger on the finish. This is impressive for the year. Drink 2031-2046.

Antonio Galloni - VinousExtremely focused and refined, with firm tannins that run the length of the wine. Medium-bodied with lovely length and juiciness. Blackberry and earth with mushroom and bark. Hints of orange peel, too. 68.2% merlot, 31.3% cabernet franc and 0.5% malbec.

James SucklingDeeply colored, the wine is packed with nuances of crushed rocks, black raspberries, flowers, plums and forest leaves. Extremely poised and polished, the silky palate offers purity in the fruit, length and the sense of minerality, finishing with an array of red pit fruits, cocoa and salty tannins. This is the first vintage to include from the recently purchased vineyards formerly belonging to Grand Pontet. The wine blends 58% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. 13.3% ABV. Drink from 2023-2040.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderFragrant, perfumed strawberries and red cherries on the nose, they have a sweet note to them, so welcoming, really bursting out of the glass. Smooth but also quite sharp on the palate with a rush of red fruits - cherries, raspberries, redcurrants and plums fill the palate - with mouthwatering acidity balanced by touches of wet stone minerality, iodine, graphite and pencil. You definitely get the feeling of the terroir here in the chalky saltiness, as well as the stalky, bramble, spiced Cabernet Franc giving backbone and direction. Quite a bit of smoked cedar spice comes in on the end, just overshadowing the brightness and overall sense of fun to this. Well worked with promise. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

2016 Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche dell'AnnunziataPiedmont, ITALY$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
From the first sip, you are made aware of the power and depth of this wine. At the top of the estate portfolio, the Renato Ratti 2016 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is the most structured and layered expression, with fruit from one of the flagship vineyards of La Morra. The power of the wine unfolds with dark fruit, cassis and crushed rock. I gave my sample ample aeration, and that made all the difference. I tasted menthol and balsam herb in a fluid and ever-changing exchange. The Conca shows more mineral definition, and the Rocche dell'Annunziata is all about power, depth and length.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2016 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata is a classic Barolo from La Morra’s most famous site. Fresh flowers, pine, mint, crushed rocks and red berry fruit are all finely-knit. The Rocche is translucent and finessed, with notable energy and tons of palate presence, all in a more traditional style than has been the norm in recent years. There is some youthful austerity, but nothing a bit of time in bottle can’t soften.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis is so wonderfully perfumed with tangerine and strawberry aromas that rise out of the glass in a spectacular way. An opulent, rich vintage of this cuvée, the 2019 Cote Rotie Ampodium still offers up nicely detailed, intricate floral notes layered atop raspberries and mocha. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers a hugely appealing mix of fruit richness married to the savory, structured style that is the Ridge signature. The 2019 is beautifully exotic, but natural without the volume of the Monte Bello. I imagine it will drink splendidly with minimal cellaring. James SucklingThe 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the estate Monte Bello Vineyard on the eastern side of the Santa Cruz Mountains and is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Hitting 13.8% alcohol, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a brilliant perfume of blue fruits, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and lead pencil. Beautifully balanced and medium to full-bodied, with building tannins, it's a seamless Cabernet Sauvignon that has some up-front appeal given its balance and elegance yet will benefit from 2-5 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 20+ years of overall longevity. In a past life, Sorgente was a Rosso di Montalcino. In its present incarnation, we can now enjoy the Salicutti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente with fruit harvested in the little vineyard plot beyond the winery. The bouquet opens to tangy and spicy fruit with forest berry, brambly fruit, cassis and pomegranate. Beyond that first layer, you'll find tar, smoke and cedar wood. This Brunello offers a mild, mid-weight mouthfeel with lean concentration and weight. There is a sour touch on the tannins, and the wine ends on a polished, glossy note.

2020 Soldera Case Basse Toscana Sangiovese IGTTuscany, ITALY$1499. 00Bottle$17988.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkThe 2020 vintage of Soldera marks the second release overseen entirely by the Soldera family since the passing of Gianfranco Soldera, and it continues the estate’s unwavering commitment to purity, biodiversity, and meticulous detail. Sourced from the iconic Case Basse estate, ten hectares of southwest-facing Sangiovese in the heart of Montalcino, the wine reflects both the singular character of the site and the estate’s distinctive, non-interventionist approach. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, long maceration in Slavonian oak, and nearly four years of aging in large botti are all part of what gives Soldera its signature depth, energy, and transparency. No longer labeled Brunello, but every bit the benchmark.
Other Reviews....
Tasted from a 65-hectoliter cask, the 2020 Sangiovese is plush and fruity at this stage, although it’s starting to reveal its mineral underpinnings, with dark blackberry notes, graphite, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a velvety texture, with ripe and refined tannins, a good deal of meaty richness through the mid-palate, and a seamless structure. There’s both purity and refinement across each of the samples tasted. The 2020 showed a good deal of completeness already prior to bottling and I expect it will have a good deal of cellaring potential.

Established in 1896 on a former pastoral land-holding, the Estate has been producing classic wines modelled on Bordeaux varieties and blends with a modern interpretation.
Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills.Other Reviews....
A very elegant young Coleraine with lovely aromas of oyster shell, lead pencil, sweet tobacco, black currant and moss. Very perfumed and expressive. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are polished and energetic with some citrusy acidity underneath. Some dust to the texture. This is the second highest blend of cabernet sauvignon in the history of Coleraine with 84% cabernet sauvignon, 13% merlot and the rest cabernet franc. March release. Best after 2027 and beyond.
96 Points
JamesSuckling.comThe 2022 Coleraine is laden at this stage with the outrageous attractiveness of youth. I mean, it's irresistible. There's raspberry, nori, rose petals, coffee grounds, star anise, salted licorice, sun-dried kelp/nori, warm pine (I know this smell because I was hiking around the Te Mata peak yesterday, and there was a fallen pine tree lying in the sun, and it smelled great) and layers of peppercorns. In the mouth, the wine is so fresh, so alive, with so much energy, but it already is showing the svelte line of this house, this place. With a hint of raw cocoa laced through the finish, I'm sad to push this glass away. It will be the last time that I taste it for a while. A ripper. Excellent. This is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Drink: 2023-2057.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)Speaking with winemaker Phil Brodie, he tells me that it was an interesting year, with some rain events in spring, then the highest number of days above 30c in summer experienced to date, a little rain during the early part of vintage, with the second half of vintage drying out. Very small berries in 2022, with crops about 40% down on average.
I tasted this over two days, and gee, it really moved about. Started off with a pop of fragrance and more rugged tannin, then it eased itself back into a more typical Coleraine profile, though for sure it’s a different style in some respects with its unusually high Cabernet Sauvignon component of 84%, the remainder being 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Release date is around Feb 2024.
Black fruit, some red, pencil lead, a little aniseed and floral perfume, nori, baking spice, pimento, slight vanilla. Medium-bodied, a fair bit of chew, dark fruit and dark chocolate, porcini mushroom umami, grainy tannin, concentrated and chewy, earthy and ferrous, with a bright line of very ‘mineral’ acidity on a long finish. Excellent, albeit a more Cabernet focussed expression of Coleraine, which marks it out as being different, and on that point such a worthy of addition to the cellar, though of course the wine is outstanding irrespective of that. 2022 Tenuta Delle Terre Nere Bellacolonna Etna RossoSicily, ITALY$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkIt's easy to underestimate the impact the wines of Mount Etna have had over the last 10 years. From near obscurity, to now being some of the most highly sought after wines of Italy, led in part from producers such as Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The winery is owned by the widely acclaimed Marco De Grazia who is one of the winemakers responsible for bringing the wines of Etna to prominence on the world stage.
The red wines of Etna, produced from predominantly Nerello Mascalese, are often compared to a variety marrying the traits of Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. Terre Nere take their wines a step further than most, and highlight the cru vineyards of the region with wines made at varying altitudes, along with vines planted on the pure Ellittico lava flow terroir. These delicate, perfumed, and intense wines translate the soil and season like few other wines in the world, and with demand far outweighing supply they are now increasingly hard to secure.
The 2022 vintage sees the inaugural release of their Etna Rosso Bellacolonna from a "young vine" selection planted in 2006 and 2007 within the Calderara Sottana cru. In their "cru" system, this is a baby step above the Etna Rosso.Other Reviews....
This is a special bottling for the 20th anniversary of the estate. It has depth and intensity with a medium to full body, a creamy stone and basalt texture, red fruits and a mushroom and bark undertone. The linear, vivid finish goes on and on. Needs time to open. Be patient.

JamesSuckling.comVivid and intense, a burst of autumnal spices, dusty rose, and blood orange gives way to dried strawberries as the 2022 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Bellacolonna blossoms in the glass. It leaves a staining of primary concentration and silky tannins to linger through the violet-tinged finale as hints of confectionery spice fade slowly. 2021 Vieux Chateau CertanPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$750. 00Bottle$9000.00 DozenClosure: CorkVieux Chateau Certan is regarded as one of the finest estates in Pomerol, and given their neighbours include Petrus, Lafleur, Certan de May, and l’Evangile, this is no surprise. Much of the vineyard is planted on the clay and gravel plateau of Pomerol, with the mix of grapes being 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Other Reviews....
A blend of 77% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Vieux Château Certan wafts from the glass with lovely aromas of violets, rose petals, sweet wild berries, exotic spices, orange rind and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, it's an elegant, fleshy wine with a bright core of fruit, ultra-refined tannins and a precise, saline finish. Despite its almost Burgundian finesse, this Pomerol's remarkably penetrating, perfumed finish gives the lie to any notion that it's in any way lacking in intensity of flavor. As is almost invariably the case, Vieux Château Certan is one of the finest wines of the appellation this year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)The 2021 Vieux Château Certan is a spectacular tour de force from Alexander and Guillaume Thienpont. What a wine. Vibrant and magnificent in its precision, the 2021 races across the palate, revealing seemingly endless layers of nuance over time. Dark blue/purplish fruit, cinnamon, new leather, graphite, lavender and crushed rocks all build effortlessly. The Cabernets are dialed up in 2021 and that comes through in the wine's flavor profile and overall feel. The purity of the flavors is just mind-bending. Harvest took place between September 25 and October 4. The blend is 67% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. It shows the cooler, fresher style of the vintage but has incredible purity and certainly brings good intensity. The tannins here are also terrific. The blend is 77% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, all of which is still resting in 65% new French oak.

Jeb DunnuckDark ruby in color, the perfume kicks off with lilacs, violets, graphite, nutmeg, spice, plums and black cherry nuances. On the palate, the wine is fresh, vibrant, crisp, chewy and long. The salty touch of minerality in the endnote adds to all the sweet, dark red pit fruits. Refined, elegant and classic, (but in a good way) there is length, purity, tension and energy in the finish, with just a hint of spice too. The wine blends 77% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.2% ABV. The harvest took place September 24-September - October 6. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2026-2049.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderRipe juicy strawberry, this has a gorgeous intensity on the nose, really fragrant and expressive, in a rich deep, heavily-scented way. You get the ripeness here with smooth, silky tannins giving depth and intensity on the palate. Succulent with a sharpness, that hit of freshly picked strawberry and cherry juice - electric and bright with tension and direction. It’s softly spoken in one way, so quietly confident, yet showing so much detail in another, saying; "looking at how charming I can be". It has freshness and tension - ‘a cool climate VCC’ said Alexandre Thienpont. Bright acidity through delivered gracefully and sensitively with a gentle persistence. I love the delicacy, it has body no doubt, but it’s the detail that’s so captivating. A wonderful wine and one of the best from Pomerol in 2021. 3.63pH. A yield of 38hl/ha. 2019 Vina Cobos Cobos MalbecMendoza, ARGENTINA$430. 00Bottle$5160.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkAfter visiting Argentina in 1989, Californian trail blazer Paul Hobbs became deeply interested in both the terroir and Argentine culture, noticing the unique potential for Malbec and other varietals in the region. After meeting two kindred spirits, Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud, they founded Viña Cobos in 1997 and since then there has been no looking back. Utilizing gnarly old vines, careful vineyard selection, very low yields and an unerring empathy for the raw materials, Viña Cobos craft intense yet balanced wines that showcase the elegance and beauty of this region.
Other Reviews....
A compact and polished Cobos with lots of dark fruit, as well as green olives, flowers and stems. Raspberries and forest fruit, too. Full-bodied, very tight and compressed. Melted tannins give great presence and mouth-feel, but the feeling is that they are invisible. It goes on for minutes. Sensational. So sophisticated and thoughtful. An archetypal malbec from Argentina. Better after 2027.

James SucklingVivid purple in the glass, dark chocolate, plum and blackcurrants - quite a savoury edge with floral touches too. Smooth, supple, generous and so delicious. This has crunchy fruit, lively and vibrant with a smooth texture and such great definition of blue and red fruits - blueberries, raspberries and figs. Tannins are finessed with good oak integration giving a hint of spice on the finish. Feels expressive and stylish - still very youthful, it's structured and chiselled yet direct and penetrating. Such purity of expression with excellent acidity - this has an electrifying lifeforce that leaves you wanting more! A worthy addition to the Place de Bordeaux this year. You could drink now but you'll be rewarded by waiting at least five years. The 2019 is a 'textbook vintage' said Paul Hobbs, this is the result of eight individual vinifications that start with a cold maceration before fermenting (25% whole cluster) with indigenous yeasts in tanks. Malolactic happens in barrels before ageing 18 months in French oak (61% new), 225l and 500l.

Georgina Hindle - DecanterFirst year on the Place de Bordeaux for this Malbec from Paul Hobbs, better known for his Napa wines but in fact a presence in Argentina for many decades. Delivers his signature skill, with power and concentration combined with weightlessness. Grainy tannins give a gentle grip, deft and carefully placed, with a ton of juice, blackberry and black cherry fruits and vibrant orange peel, lemongrass and white pepper spice. This is a no-till vineyard with naturally present grasses. Whole cluster, from one of the upper reaches of the Chanares vineyard, granite rock soils with parts of limestone, with long hang time, harvest into April so get cooler nights. 3.6ph, 45% new oak.

I also tasted two vintages of the entry-level red. The 2021 GR-10 Tinto was produced with 85% Garnacha and 15% Cariñena. which was fermented with full clusters and matured in barrels of different sizes and one 4,200-liter oak vat for seven months. It has 13.5% alcohol and very good freshness. There's more Cariñena in this 2021 than in the 2020, and it has a lighter color—they used a vineyard that wasn't used in 2020, and it delivers lighter-colored wines. This is surprisingly harmonious and bright. It's fine-boned, medium-bodied and zippy, though maybe the tannins are not as perfect as those of the 2020, and it has some grip; but this comes through as very harmonious and elegant. A bargain! Drink 2023-2028.

Showing greater intensity and complexity than the regular bottling, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage la Guiraude also is made entirely whole cluster, yet it shows less prominent stemmy notes. Olive, roasted meat and cherry notes mingle easily on the nose and palate. This is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, fine, elegant finish. It should drink well for over a decade.

Joe Czerwinski - The Wine AdvocateOpaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, olive, potpourri and incense, and exotic spice and mineral notes build steadily with air. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice-tinged boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Blends concentration and energy with a deft hand and finishes with superb, gently tannic persistence.

2019 AlmavivaValle de Maipo, CHILE$360. 00Bottle$4320.00 DozenClosure: CorkAlmaviva is the ambitious partnership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild group (Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro (Chile) with the intention of creating a wine of exceptional character, complexity and ageing potential from extraordinary Chilean terroir. Launched with the 1996 vintage, consistent vineyard improvements and meticulous winemaking today mark Almaviva as one of the finest wines produced in Chile. 2019 Almaviva continues an excellent run of vintages, with the moderately warm year the perfect situation for the Carmenere component.
Other Reviews....
The 2019 Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère (from Peumo), 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot, higher in Carmenere and reflecting a warmer and drier vintage when then bottled wine reached 15% alcohol. It fermented with destemmed grapes in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 75% of them new, for 18 months. Here, the Carmenere adds herbal freshness and changes the aromatic profile when compared with the 2019 Epu. 2019 was a good year for Carmenere, which suffers in extremely warm years like 2017, but in moderately warm years like 2019, the variety displays that herbal character and has good density. It's full-bodied and round, with saturated tannins, tasty, spicy and long, with a dry, serious finish. It's balsamic, with notes of camphor and a silky and velvety texture. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021. Drink 2021 - 2030.

Luis Gutiérrez - Wine Advocate (Sept 2021)The aromas of iodine and blackcurrants with roses and lavender make the wine extremely perfumed. It’s full-bodied with a tight, fine-tannined palate that shows linear flow through the center palate. It’s vertical and integrated, adding depth and serious quality to the wine.
