A blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache matured in French oak barriques for 18 months. Midnight black in colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Aromas of black cherry and liquorice have a leathery overlay with notions of graphite, scorched earth and pepper following on. Medium to full bodied, rich black raspberry, black cherry, liquorice and leather flavours are wrapped up in a tense chewy mouthfeel. Scorched earth, provincial herbs and peppered dried meat elements are also evident. Muscular tannin structure finishing dry and slightly grippy with a long peppery aftertaste.

From the same parcel every year and a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, the purple-hued 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Villages gives up a very young, juicy bouquet of blue fruits, violets, lavender, and pepper. This beauty packs ample fruit and offers terrific purity, full body, and supple, sweet tannins. It needs a year of bottle age but is a ripe, sexy wine. Drink 2018-2026.

Showing greater intensity and complexity than the regular bottling, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage la Guiraude also is made entirely whole cluster, yet it shows less prominent stemmy notes. Olive, roasted meat and cherry notes mingle easily on the nose and palate. This is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, fine, elegant finish. It should drink well for over a decade.

Opaque ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, olive, potpourri and incense, and exotic spice and mineral notes build steadily with air. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice-tinged boysenberry, cherry preserve and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Blends concentration and energy with a deft hand and finishes with superb, gently tannic persistence.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo, the estate's top bottling, is a blend of 50% Ronchi, 25% Montersino and 25% Loreto, done entirely in cask. Reticent at first, the 2016 needs several hours of air to start opening up. A super-classic expression of Nebbiolo follows, with hints of menthol, leather, iron, violet spice and licorice that develop later. The 2016 remains a wine of fascinating contrasts. It is at times light on its feet, while at other moments it comes across as much more powerful.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo is the most elaborate and oak-forward of the three Barbaresco expressions presented by Albino Rocca this year. The wine opens to dark color saturation with blackberry, dried fruit and plum. You get extra layers of spice, smoke, tar and tilled earth as well. The wine is robust and full-bodied. It deserves to sit next to a nice cut of steak on the grill.

Crystal-clear purity of fruit with everything ranging from rose petals to strawberries to dried cherries. Elegant and graceful, yet at the same time strong and strapping, this full-bodied Barbaresco zips with agile acidity through muscular tannins and deepness of flavor like a well-built athlete skating on ice.

Very deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Aromas of morello and dried cherries mix with earth, dried herbs and spice. Wine of the decade - James Suckling

              Other Reviews....
2017 was an unusual year—warm and extremely dry, with 178 liters of rain, but there was some rain after the 2016 harvest, so the soil had some water]—and the harvest and the whole cycle were two to three weeks earlier than normal. That is the context for the 2017 Almaviva, whose vines saw extremely low yields (10 hectoliters per hectare in the older parts, 36 hectoliters per hectare in the young vines) and produced concentrated juice. The bottled blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot, quite similar to the 2016, and the alcohol level reached 14.6% with a pH of 3.65 and 4.9 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid). It matured in French oak barriques (825 of them new) for 19 months. It's a riper, rounder and softer vintage, with moderate acidity and a tender mouthfeel, and it is really marked by very high temperatures all year round. They used a little more Petit Verdot in the blend, but there is no over-ripeness. The wine shows some herbal aromas (I really notice the touch of the Carmenère this year). They harvested extremely early (three weeks earlier than normal!) and were able to keep the tension in the wine, and it has a polished mouthfeel and very round tannins. It's a nicely crafted red blend, and they were able to overcome the difficulties of the year; I see the style of something between 2016 and 2015, quite compact. It might require some more bottle age to open up, and it should develop nicely in bottle.

A Cabernet Sauvignon mixed with 23% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot from Puente Alto, Maipo that spent 19 months in French barrels. Reflecting a warm, dry year, the nose presents notes of black currant and raspberry jam, black tea leaves and sweet spices with a touch of kirsch. Gentle on the palate with firm, pleasant tannins, a loose structure, bold flavor and intriguing expression. A hint of menthol makes itself felt at the back of the mouth.

The second wine of the estate, the 2017 Palmer Alter Ego is a similar blend to the Grand Vin and is 53% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. It has beautiful ripeness and density as well as ample black fruits, licorice, and toasted spice aromas and flavors. With good volume, a big, concentrated mid-palate, and a good finish, it’s slightly more elegant and streamlined than the Palmer and will be drinkable at an earlier age.

Àlvaro is one of the group of 5 famed ‘pioneers’ who arrived in Priorat in 1989 primed to recover and reinvent the remnant old local Garnatxa of the region. Camins is a summation of the region, taking quality fruit from 60 growers and 7 of the 12 villages of Priorat. In part, it expresses vineyards being replanted to local Garnatxas, but it also serves as home for French varieties culled from the site-specific wines. Produced from mostly Grenache with a blend of other indigenous and international varietes, the fruit is de-stemmed, fermented in open concrete, wood and inox vats, and matured for 8 months in larger, old French oak.

                JamesSuckling.com (January 2021)

The regional blend 2019 Camins del Priorat is a blend of 35% Garnacha, 24% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cariñena, 10% Merlot and 3% other varieties. The grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then fermented with the natural yeasts in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concrete vats. After fermentation, it matured in barrel and oak vats for four months. This wine showcases the power and concentration of 2019, an extraordinarily warm and dry year, but the wine has great finesse. There are more balsamic aromas from the Bordeaux varieties, which incredibly didn't dehydrate that year: the leaves took a long time to turn yellow. There are notes of licorice and something balsamic. This is juicy and chewy, powerful, pungent and intense, with muscle but with great balance and very clean. This is the most modern and international of their wines, with a showy profile. A triumph over the conditions of the vintage. 237,000 bottles produced. Drink 2020 - 2024.

Shimmering violet. Vibrant blackberry, cherry and floral aromas are complemented by hints of licorice and succulent herbs. Concentrated bitter cherry and dark berry preserve flavors stretch out and turn livelier with air. Gently gripping tannins give shape and focus to a long, spicy finish that shows very good clarity and repeating florality. Drink 2022 - 2028.

Solaia comes from a 50 acre vineyard located on the Antinori Tignanello estate. As a wine only made in the best years, this 2017 Solaia is a triumph from what was a warm, dry, and challenging year in the area. Solaia is famous for having incredible aromatics, and the additional Cabernet Franc component lends more to this release than usual, while also creating a softer fruit profile to balance the more tannic Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese.

Extremely aromatic with sage, lavender, blackberries and currants. Full-bodied with chewy and very polished tannins that melt into the wine. Foursquare and slightly austere. Fresh and well framed. A wine that needs five to six years to soften and come together completely. Try after 2025.

The Marchesi Antinori 2017 Solaia offers a uniquely floral personality with wild rose and lilac that comes as a surprise, especially if you are expecting the more robust and opulent dark fruit associated with this vintage. To use a word that is popular now, the aromas are absolutely lifted. This is a bouquet-driven wine, showing great oak choices that are synergistic with the light and considerably thinner palate. Dried or pressed flowers cede to cherry, blueberry, some red meat char and a light touch of cinnamon. My impression is that the dry extract from the oak ultimately plays a bigger role in the overall flavor profile, preserving its red fruit core nevertheless. The wine is very accessible in terms of mouthfeel, showing a comparatively thinner and shorter approach. With more time in the glass, it offers some of the white soil dust that is a standard Solaia signature. It will be released the first week of September.

Just bottled, the 2017 Solaia is naturally going to need time to come together. Antinori’s Peppoli was first made in 1985 and year in year out proves to be a reliable, great value Chianti Classico. Produced from predominately Sangiovese grapes, the wine was aged for approximately 9 months in large Slavonian oak casks with a small parcel in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of fruit.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Fresh herb laced aromatics of red currants and red cherries are trailed by earthy cedar, tobacco and spice notes. Generously fruited yet also elegant the palate is layered with delicious red cherry and red currant flavours. Infusions of fresh herbs, earthy tobacco characters and spicy cedar chime in on the back half for additional interest. Polished tannins with fresh acidity lending energy to the savoury red fruited aftertaste.

The story has it that Alain was cycling in Morocco (hence the tandem bike and palm tree on the label) when he stopped off at Domaine des Ouled Thaleb, 40 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. A conversation with the Domaine's then oenologist, Jacques Poulaine, and a close look at sites in Rommani and Benslimane convinced Graillot of the potential for producing highly elegant Syrah. The relatively cool climate and altitude here-and the mix of red and black clay over a base of limestone and ancient ocean bed remnants-provide the right mix of conditions for scented, juicy, layered Syrah that Alain Graillot hopes will showcase the surprising potential of Morocco.
Impenetrable black as night core with a bright dark red hue. Elevated aromas of black cherries intermingle with liquorice, fresh herbs, a subtle meatiness, scorched earth, black olive and blackpepper. Rich black cherry and liquorice flavours have a dense chewy feel underpinned by dried meats, scorched earth, spicy dried herbs and pepper. A robust tannin structure imparts some grip to the back palate. Quite savoury and elegant in spite of the black fruits finishing medium to long. Meaty and chewy, this is quite Northern Rhone like.

The Argiano 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows a lovely transparency to its appearance and follows with lifted red fruit aromas, cassis, wild cherry and blue flower. It is made with a simple approach, fermented in cement tank and aged slowly in oak, and the fruit comes from a 22-hectare site with limestone marl soils. It delivers a lightness and a weightlessness that is not often ascribed to this vintage. No worries, the power of 2016 comes through at the very end in terms of tannins and structure. This ample release of 115,000 bottles will be ready to drink after 2023 when the wine has had time to open and flesh out.

The 2016 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino shows sweet herbs and tobacco with hints of mocha and cedar spice box. It’s silky in texture, coasting across a medium-bodied frame while giving way to tart red berries, with grippy tannins mounting toward the close. A cooling wave of minty herbs and licorice adds much needed freshness, bringing the 2016 into balance throughout the youthfully structured finale. While this was hard to read and quite backward upon opening, it blossomed beautifully in the glass over time.

Deep dark red colour with subtle black tinged edges. Fragrant rose petal like aromas mix with red currant, red cherry, dried herb, earth and spice notes. The mid weighted palate has a rustic charm to it sporting a red currant, red cherry and spicy dried herb flavour profile that has a bright elegant feel. Spicy old cedar and earthy tobacco characters also chime in. Dryish finish with sinewy tannins, fresh acidity and a slightly chewy yet savoury aftertaste.

A really balanced red with aromas and flavors of cherries, lemon rind and hints of cedar. It’s medium-bodied. Firm and racy on the finish. A beauty. Drink now.

Composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Arômes de Pavie has an alcohol of 14.78% and a pH of 3.57. It is aging in French oak barriques, 70% new. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a little swirling to unleash its exuberant scents of stewed black plums, black cherry compote and boysenberries, plus hints of tar, sautéed herbs and chargrill. The full-bodied palate packs in the black fruit layers, framed by soft tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

The 2020 Arômes de Pavie represents a major step up in quality vis-à-vis previous vintages. It is a deep, statuesque wine endowed with tremendous power, richness and resonance. Plum, mocha, licorice, espresso and spice all flesh out in the glass. I can't wait to taste this in bottle. This is the first year in which the blend is equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, both increasingly from plots dedicated to the Arômes, a departure from the past, when this wine was a selection of younger-vine fruit and lots that did not make it into the Grand Vin.

Second wine of Pavie with wonderful blackberry, black olive and dark chocolate. Full and chewy with a powerful finish. Lots of structure and intensity.

                        James Suckling

Deeply colored, the wine offers red and black plums, flowers, boysenberry, espresso and dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, lush and concentrated, velvet textures and loads of sweet, fleshy, flashy, dark red fruits, spice, espresso and cocoa in the finish. Aromes de Pavie is no longer the second wine of Pavie. Because all its fruit comes from a specific 11 hectare parcel, it should be looked at as its own brand. The wine blends 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc.

Powerful and upfront, with a thick layer of liquorice and clove, blueberry and blackberry fruit. A little more of a monolith than the main estate wine of Pavie - something that you find often this year, where the tannins seem to go to the second wines. 70% new oak, 3.57pH. A yield of 35hl/ha.

50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc. From designated parcels (11 ha) on the plateau. Cask sample.
Ripe and pure-fruited but the freshness really comes through with this (first time) 50/50 blend. Chalky, mineral note behind. Fine-grained tannins. Drives on the finish with the fruit and freshness. More than adequate understudy while awaiting the grand vin.

Produced from only the oldest parcels on the estate, the 2018 season was one of the warmest experienced at Ata Rangi. A drier than usual November and very warm December led up to regional temperatures breaking records in late January. This created a good buffer from the wetter and cooler weather that appeared at the back end of the season. Grapes were therefore picked pleasingly ripe and in great condition. Fermentation took place with 35% whole bunch inclusion and was then matured for 11 months in French oak of which 35% was new.
Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Showing terrific intensity, perfumed violet like scents lead the way morphing into red to dark cherry, red plum, strawberry and subtle anise. Subtle notes of vanillin cedar, forest floor and spicy fresh herbs then follow on. Rich dark cherry, plum and strawberry fruits are both caressing in their feel and also seductive. Bright fresh acidity and stern yet polished tannins play their roll to provide a great framework. Superb power wave and structure with complexing elements of graphite, smoked meats, earthy black olives, forest floor and spice lying underneath. Long yet tightly knit finish.
                          Cellar 6-8 years.

Aromas of red cherries, cedar, dry brown spices, forest berries and wood, as well as rose-like perfume. It opens and aromatically enriches with some air. The palate has all the trademark layering of smooth tannins and a smoothly ripe ball of fresh red cherries. Assertive drive to the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

This wine is from a single Tour de Curon site which is located below the tower in Arbois. While the fruit is perfectly ripe, this Pinot Noir is also very bright and vibrant.

These are the best Trousseau bunches, selected and fermented in open fermenters before being aged in 225 litre barrels, much like the red wines of Burgundy.

Baudry’s rosé is drawn from vines rooted in the gravel terroir of Grézeaux and a parcel called Les Balais, which was originally planted by Matthieu’s father some 30 years ago. In contrast to Grézeaux, Les Balais is on clay and flint (silex) soils. Picked by hand, there was brief skin contact and then the wine fermented via indigenous yeasts—two-thirds in Italian-made concrete tanks and the remainder in stainless steel. The result is a layered, fleshy and complex rosé with lots of earthy, saline minerality to complex the red fruit characters. Unique and delicious.

Brilliant onion skin color. Suave, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red berries and tangerine on the sharply focused nose. Dry and energetic on the palate, offering sappy strawberry, bitter cherry and orange zest flavors that show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Closes extremely long and silky, displaying resonating floral and red fruit notes and a faint touch of anise.

Bricco Ernesto company was born in the small village of Priocca in Roero, Piedmont, and is run by one of the most talented and driven vignerons in the region; Renato Vezza. Along with his partner, they juggle multiple-part time jobs in their quest to maximize the potential of this land which has been farmed sustainably since the 1990's. The cellar is as stripped down as they come, with just a few cement tanks and a small collection of barrels. That's pretty much it.

The Vino Rosso is 100% Nebbiolo from a collection of tiny parcels in the hills above Priocca, and spends three weeks on the skins followed by a year in barrel and a year in bottle. This is really a game changer for the Roero region, a wine more akin to fine Barbaresco than those you would normally find from here. Average production is a miniscule 1100-1500 bottles a year, and with only tiny quantities making it to Australia, this is very limited.

Bruno Duchêne is originally from the Loire Valley where his family had a thriving business selling farm machinery. He then became a distributor of wild mushrooms in the Loire and Burgundy and discovered wine, particularly meticulous made, non-interventionist wines. He then worked for nine months with Frederic Cossard of Domaine Chassorney in Saint Romain where biodynamic farming is practised, and it was here that he learnt how to make wine. Today, he lives on the Côte Vermeille in the town of Banyuls sur Mer, where he produces stunning wine from his very steep hillside vines. This is the rocky stretch of land where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean; this is Catalonia. The dramatic and wild countryside, stunning colours and luminosity were captured artistically and made famous by Fauvist painters such as Matisse.

Bruno owns just 4 hectares spread over 4 areas, all on decomposed schistose soils at an altitude of around 300m - each parcel differing slightly in exposition. The vineyards in Collioure are extremely low yielding and, as they are planted on terraced hillsides, very difficult to work mechanically, which like in Germany's Mosel region, has contributed to a growing abandonment of these legendary sites. This is a great shame as the real character of any regions wines is defined by it's original terroir.

His vines are farmed organically, and because of the region's relatively warm, dry climate, Bruno only has to use a few sulfur treatments each year and because odium is not an issue here, copper is never used. In the winery; after a manual harvest and a rigorous selection there is 10-15 day cool maceration with a natural yeast, whole bunch ferment in 26hl Grenier wooden vats. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and only a small amount of sulfur is added at the bottling in most years.

La Luna Rouge is produced almost entirely from Grenache but also includes a little Carignan.

This rare beauty is always a silky, sensual delight - made from Grenache it displays complex aromas of strawberry, black-cherry, citrus, violet, plum skin and earth. Intense fruit on the fresh, medium-bodied palate, with blackberry freshness - on the finish there is a silky texture with lively acidity with suggestions at rose water and fabulous length.

They are all produced almost entirely from Grenache but also includes a little Carignan. Instead of highlighting different terroirs with separate bottlings, Bruno bottles based on his various farming practices. For La Luna, he lets grass grow free. Pascole is partially ploughed by hand. Finally, Anodine represents the areas that are impossible to work mechanically, and where the soil work has to be done entirely by hand. He also produces an exquisite white, Vallpompo, from Grenache Blanc.

Cherry and squishy berries, dried herb and plenty of spice, a little fresh mint and rose perfume. Tannin is fleshy and plentiful, yet soft and gently mouth-coating. Medium bodied and elegant and refined feel, flavours of blackcurrant and black olive mix with cedary tobacco characters, dried herbs and spice. Pronounced black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry scents flow through the nostrils with notions of scorched earth and peppered dried herbs also present. Slightly lighter crimson than the Cornières, while the nose delivers more of the lively raspberry and crushed strawberry notes of the whole bunch component. It’s full-bodied and chewy with intense tannins that are layered and focused. The fruit is pure and purposeful, yet not over done. Wonderful strength and purity to this. Class is the word. Try it after 2024.

The Casanova di Neri 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova offers a long list of aromas on an ever-shifting and fluid bouquet. You get bright cherry, rose potpourri, black truffle, caramel, butterscotch, sandalwood, road pavement and chalky mineral. In fact, each time I come back to this wine, that mineral element seemed to grow in intensity and scope. The wine offers a grounded fruit side that is contrasted nicely against a grounded oak component. The mouthfeel is creamy and long, and the wine shows terrific tannic integration. When you come back hours later, you might find black olive, bresaola and licorice.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova drawing you in with a display of exotic brown spice, mint and cedar dust. Further coaxing unlocks depths of cherry, plum, hints of dark chocolate and roses. It coasts along a medium-bodied frame with velvety richness, complemented by polished red and black fruits while contrasted by brisk acids and hints of sour citrus. This coats the teeth in concentration, as if you can feel the pulp, seeds and skins of its fruit, while a layer of fine tannin slowly grounds you back to earth. The Tenuta Nuova already has so much to give, yet it will be many years before it reaches its apex. Wow. Thinking back to my tasting of the 2015, I can’t say that the 2016 is necessarily a better wine, just a little less immediate. Either way, both wines are beautiful expressions of vintage.

A bright, pure version, boasting raspberry, black cherry and blackberry flavors married to a fluid profile. The structure is present, yet both the lively acidity and fine-grained tannins are in harmony. The focus is really on the fruit here, with accents of graphite, earth, tobacco and underbrush. Best from 2023 through 2045.

Vines were planted in 1989 and Gianlorenzo Neri says they are now hitting their stride, giving wines with more persistence and depth than earlier vintages. The 2016 clearly demonstrates both of these attributes. It is not as immediate as the white label but unfolds decorously with earth, tar, leather, black currants and cinnamon. The tannins are refined, clinging to the palate with a clayey texture. Pristine and polished with masses of personality, the briny undertow cleanses the mouth brilliantly. Balsam and orange carry the finish.

The palate is intensified and has another gear, with mouth-filling cherry fruit, tobacco, and a balanced but powerful structure. Enjoy a couple of the 2016 Brunello while you wait for this one in the cellar for 3-5 years and drink 2025-2041.
