I suspect a great value (I wasn’t able to get the retail price), the 2016 Côtes du Rhône from the young Romain Roche offers up loads of peppery herbs, ripe black and blue fruits, leather and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s medium to full-bodied, textured, front-end loaded and about a delicious as they come. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years.

The flagship cuvée is the 2017 Cairanne La Bousquette, a mix of 80% Grenache and 20% Carignan that was destemmed and brought up in tank. Cassis, violets, lavender, peppery spice, and minerality notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, beautifully polished Cairanne that has silky tannin, rocking purity of fruit, and a great finish. It’s a total gem in the vintage that readers should snatch up.

Romain Roche is now in charge of perpetuating the family philosophy and their "all in the vineyards" approach to their profession. The grapes for the Cairanne come from a selection of naturally low yielding Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%) vines between 40 and 105 years of age, within two distinct terroirs. The Grenache grows on the red clays and "Galets" of the Guarrigues plateau, while the Syrah comes from the Marly slopes of "La Montagne" with a northern exposure. Each block is fermented separately with only the Syrah component matured in barrels and demi-muids (600 litres) for a period of 10 months.
Opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Lifted aromas of ripe black cherries and black raspberries are intermixed with some liquorice and incense followed by lightly scorched earth and pepper end notes. Dry, slightly grippy finish with solidly built yet fine grained tannins, showing more structure than previous vintages. The base Gigondas, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a blend from both the La Louisiane and Pigière lieux-dits near the estate (due to the dismal yields, there’s no Souteyrade cuvée in 2018) and is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah brought up in foudre. It has a wonderful flowery incense and blue fruit quality as well as medium to full body, a ripe, rounded mid-palate, and a great texture. An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, the 2019 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu Vieilles Vignes is an excellent option for consumers who don't want to spend the extra money for the Saurel family's Gigondas bottlings. The garrigue on the nose is a bit more subtle than normal this year, with the bulk of the aromatics being super ripe cherries and berries. Full-bodied and intense, with a helping of firm tannins that keep the jamminess in check, it finishes dusty and savory, with ample length. The ruby/purple-hued 2017 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a finesse-oriented, medium to full-bodied wine from this estate that has classy notes of dark fruits, kirsch, sappy flowers, and peppery spice. With no hard edges and beautiful balance, it’s reminiscent of the 2011 and will drink nicely for 7-8 years or more. Drink 2019-2027.

As usual, the 2015 Cotes du Rhone features a majority of Syrah, largely sourced from the western side of the Rhône. Spicy, peppery, hickory aromas lead off, adding berries up front and then moving into darker fruit and more savory notes of black olive by the finish. This medium to full-bodied wine finishes long and silky, avoiding any of the vintage's hard tannins, while still boasting the concentration to drink well through at least 2023.

Josh Raynolds – VinousThe Guigals predict volumes of only 3.5 million bottles for the 2017 Cotes du Rhone, as good wine was harder to source than in 2016. Joe Czerwinski – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateConsidering Guigal makes about 4m bottles of Côtes du Rhône a year, with fruit sourced from across the Rhône Valley, the consistency, typicity and quality across all three colours is impressive. The red is generally released after a few years in bottle. The 2017 is a touch darker than the 2016, and I like its deep, brambly nature, with plenty of dark plum and blackberry. It has the warming sunshine that the southern Rhône expresses so well. It’s rounded, generous and full-bodied but with a good sense of inner freshness. The acidity is marked enough to match the concentration and alcohol, leading to a richly fruited finish, with gentle chewy tannins. Drinking Window 2021 – 2023.

Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a crimson red hue. Pronounced ripe dark raspberry scents intermix with cherry and liquorice aromas over subtle infusions of incense, spicy earth and pepper. Medium bodied, juicy dark raspberry, dark cherry and liquorice flavours prevail over a back drop of lightly scorched earth and pepper. The fruits opulence counterpointed by ripe chewy tannins. Good length and breadth with a spicy dark raspberry, dark cherry, liquorice and peppered scorched earth aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.
