    An early indicator of the 2019 vintage, this deliciously seductive Cotes du Rhone is made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and old vine Carignan. Inky black core with a deep bright dark red black hue. Pronounced black cherry and liquorice aromas have a distinct blackpepper overlay with notions of scorched earth, graphite and spice also evident. Carrying plenty of weight across the palate are rich black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits which are underscored by scorched earth, infusions of herbs du Provence and pepper. The wines opulence juxtaposed with a vivid freshness and ripe chewy tannin structure. Excellent depth and intensity for its price point finishing with ample length and a burst of pepper and spice on the aftertaste. Terrific bang for your buck here.

    Fresh and juicy, this is a delicious entry level Cote du Rhone.

    A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Carignan. Totally opaque black dark purple colour with a bright dark purple hue. Nosing reveals aromas of freshly crushed dark raspberries and dark cherries over some inky liquorice characters followed by notions of incense and spicy herbs. Ripe with a juicy vibrancy to the mouthfeel, the medium to full bodied palate is filled with dark raspberry, cherry and subtle liquorice flavours underscored by subtle fresh herb infusions and spicy pepper. Lively finish with well integrated fine grained tannins. Aftertaste of ripe dark raspberries, dark cherries, some liquorice, inky spice, subtle fresh herbs and pepper.

    I suspect a great value (I wasn’t able to get the retail price), the 2016 Côtes du Rhône from the young Romain Roche offers up loads of peppery herbs, ripe black and blue fruits, leather and dried flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s medium to full-bodied, textured, front-end loaded and about a delicious as they come. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years.

    Outstanding black purple colour with very deep dark purple hue. The nose presents scents of black raspberry and liquorice followed by some dried meats and spice. Full bodied and boasting tremendous richness the palate delivers flavours of black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice with some meaty undertones and spicy back palate. Fine grained solid tannin structure. Excellent concentration and depth with long liquorice, black raspberry and blackpepper aftertaste.

    It has a dense purple color (slightly more saturated than the 2009) and loads of primary yet intense blueberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with lavender and licorice. Romain Roche is now in charge of perpetuating the family philosophy and their "all in the vineyards" approach to their profession. The grapes for the Cairanne come from a selection of naturally low yielding Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%) vines between 40 and 105 years of age, within two distinct terroirs. The Grenache grows on the red clays and "Galets" of the Guarrigues plateau, while the Syrah comes from the Marly slopes of "La Montagne" with a northern exposure. Each block is fermented separately with only the Syrah component matured in barrels and demi-muids (600 litres) for a period of 10 months.

    Opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Lifted aromas of ripe black cherries and black raspberries are intermixed with some liquorice and incense followed by lightly scorched earth and pepper end notes. Medium to full bodied with superb richness, a fleshy mouthfeel and excellent structural qualities the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of ripe black cherries intertwined with blackberries and liquorice over background nuances of meaty characters, scorched earth and pepper. Dry, slightly grippy finish with solidly built yet fine grained tannins, showing more structure than previous vintages. Excellent length finishing with a long black cherry, liquorice, blackberry, subtle scorched earth and pepper aftertaste.

    Year after year this intensely flavoured Cairanne is one of our most sought-after Southern Rhone offerings. Tremendous depth of colour with an impenetrable inky black core and a very deep dark red black hue. Powerful ripe black cherry scents intermingle with liquorice, black raspberry and earthy incense notes. Also evident are notions of Provincial herb and peppered meats. Rich, densely textured black cherry, liquorice, blackberry and black raspberry fruits show outstanding concentration and depth. Adding further interest and complexity are earthy incense elements, dried meats, subtle infusions of herbs du Provence and blackpepper. Ripe chewy tannins lead into a dry, slightly grippy finish to complete what is otherwise a picture of opulence. Black fruits infused with blackpepper driving the long aftertaste.

    The 2017 Cairanne is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 10% Carignan. While a portion of the Syrah was aged in demi-muids, the rest of the wine matured in tank. It's a ripe, plush, concentrated wine, loaded with black cherries and plums. Full-bodied and velvety, it's impressively hedonistic stuff for drinking over the next 6-7 years. Drink 2019-2026.

Youthful ripe dark raspberry and dark cherry scents intermingle with hints of liquorice and ripe blueberry followed by subtle earthy incense notes and light pepper. Rich and seductive, the palate delivers outstanding concentration and power yet has a feeling of freshness. The mouth is awash with succulent black raspberry and liquorice flavours which overlay traces of black cherries, inky earth elements, incense infusions and spicy pepper. Vibrant acidity, with sturdily built tannins providing some grip to the otherwise opulent mouthfeel. Long finish of juicy dark to black raspberries, dark cherries, liquorice, earthy incense characters and pepper.

    Domaine Saint-Damien is run by Joel and Amie Saurel whose family has been tending vineyards for four generations, dating back to 1821. Until relatively recently they sold all of their grapes to negociants. In 1998 they brought on consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie and haven’t looked back. Of the estates 42 acres of vineyards, 30 acres are in Gigondas with vines that have an average age of 50 years.
    A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah matured in large old foudres for a period of 12 months.
    Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Flamboyant dark raspberry jube, dark plum, liquorice and cherry scents flood the nostrils with some provincial herb and subtle peppered earth notes also evident. Rich and concentrated the palate is awash with super succulent dark raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits which are framed by a muscular yet integrated tannin structure. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and pepper ensue. Youthfully fresh and exuberant, it finishes long, juicy and powerful.

It's another sensational effort from this estate, which continues to go from strength to strength.

    The intricate 2022 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes blooms with alluring strawberry compote, blackberry, black plum and spicy characteristics. Full-bodied and concentrated, the 2022 is a rock-solid rendition of this cuvée built for the long haul. Give it at least two more years in a cool cellar before pulling the cork. Drink 2026-2032.

    A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre sourced from the lower terraced parcels of the Plan de Dieu lieu-dit, in the commune of Violès. The Grenache vines are over 70 years old and come from two sites, one planted on red clay and the other on galets (smooth river-worn pebbles). The younger Mourvèdre vines are planted on sandy soil. The wine is fermented for 30 days in concrete vats, then matured for 10 months in a mix of concrete tanks and large old 50 hL oak foudres.

    Deep dark red black colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Delightful red to dark raspberry and red liquorice aromas emante from the glass with some scorched earth, wild herb and pepper notes also chiming in. Rich, juicy pepper infused red to dark raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp the mid weighted palate. Infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth and peppered dried meat elements lie underneath. Understated in its power and concentration it shows remarkable freshness. Finishes very long and succulent with an explosion of blackpepper.

    Looking at the Gigondas releases, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes doesn’t give anything to the two single vineyard releases and offers awesome aromatics, full-bodied richness, a round, lush, yet pure mouthfeel, and ripe yet certainly present tannins. It’s loaded with Provençal, garrigue, and peppery goodness, and it’s going to be a brilliant value. This cuvée is an 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre raised all in foudre.

    Very deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Intense and intoxicating, the nose features wonderful aromatics of spicy dark raspberry, black cherry and liquorice which are complimented by earthy incense like notes, provincial herbs, hints of new leather and pepper. Rich, dense and opulent yet still retaining a fresh feel, the full bodied palate is awash with dark raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits. Both expansive and powerful it is a little more open at this early stage than the Vieilles Vignes. Velvety yet robust tannin structure with earthy incense, scorched earth and peppered herb elements lingering right through the long seductive finish which has a gently chewy feel to it. An outstanding Gigondas.

    Moving to the 2020s, the 2020 Gigondas La Louisiane is an absolute blockbuster of a wine that's up there with some of the best Gigondas made. Based on 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and the rest Cinsault and Syrah, raised all in foudre, its deep purple hue is followed by a kaleidoscope-like array of kirsch, blackberries, ground pepper, violets, sandalwood, and other assorted Provençal-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, concentrated, and flawlessly balanced, I love its tannins, and it has a stacked mid-palate as well as a great finish.

    Moving to the 2019s, this is a great vintage for this estate, and all of the wines showed brilliantly. The 2019 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is its usual 80/20 split of Grenache and Mourvèdre and has awesome dark fruits, ground pepper, licorice, truffle, and earthy mineral-like aromas and flavors. I love its mid-palate, it has elegance as well as power, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I finished my note with “Wow.”

    The base Gigondas, the 2018 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a blend from both the La Louisiane and Pigière lieux-dits near the estate (due to the dismal yields, there’s no Souteyrade cuvée in 2018) and is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah brought up in foudre. It has a wonderful flowery incense and blue fruit quality as well as medium to full body, a ripe, rounded mid-palate, and a great texture. It’s a more forward, charming, sexy wine that’s going to drink nicely in its youth yet also evolve gracefully.

The garrigue on the nose is a bit more subtle than normal this year, with the bulk of the aromatics being super ripe cherries and berries. Full-bodied and intense, with a helping of firm tannins that keep the jamminess in check, it finishes dusty and savory, with ample length. This is a big wine, yet one I suspect will mature relatively quickly; drink it over the next 5-6 years. Drink 2021-2026.

    A young negociant based in the Rhone Valley, François Arnaud Dauvergne established his outfit in 2004. From his time spent working at other wineries he become convinced that the key to success was to establish a strong relationship with his growers. Together with his friend Jean-François Ranvier they seek out the best terroirs and oversee the whole wine making process to produce modern blends, offering both generous fruit and freshness.

    A blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre that was matured in seasoned oak for 6 months. Inky black at its heart with a deep bright purple red hue. Attractively scented, the nose offers up black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice aromas which show good elevation out of the glass. Also evident are herbs du Provence, incense, earth and peppered meat notes. Rich and concentrated, black raspberry and black cherry fruits cast an opulent yet bright feel across the medium to full bodied palate. Liquorice, herbs du Provence, scorched earth and peppered dried meat characters add personality across the back half. Ripe chewy tannins with a long generously endowed finish.

    I’m always amazed at the quality this estate gets in the Côtes du Rhône, especially at the quantities produced. Their 2018 Côtes Du Rhône is well worth seeking out and has a medium-bodied, round, silky style as well as textbook peppery herbs, violets, bouquet garni, and both red and black fruits. Rising from the glass is a mix of black cherry and liquorice aromatics which are followed by scorched earth, subtle herb du Provence and peppered dried meat notes.     Considering Guigal makes about 4m bottles of Côtes du Rhône a year, with fruit sourced from across the Rhône Valley, the consistency, typicity and quality across all three colours is impressive. The red is generally released after a few years in bottle. The 2017 is a touch darker than the 2016, and I like its deep, brambly nature, with plenty of dark plum and blackberry. It has the warming sunshine that the southern Rhône expresses so well. It’s rounded, generous and full-bodied but with a good sense of inner freshness. The acidity is marked enough to match the concentration and alcohol, leading to a richly fruited finish, with gentle chewy tannins. Drinking Window 2021 – 2023.

From a great, great vintage for the Southern Rhône, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône shows an upfront, sunny style as well as Provençal notes of spiced red and black fruits, ground pepper, and garrigue.     The Halos de Jupiter are a collaboration between the southern Rhône’s renowned oenologist Philippe Cambie, and the talented winemaker Michel Gassier. Grenache: the workhorse of the Southern Rhone.

While Grenache has lost favour to Shiraz in Australia, in the Southern Rhone, Shiraz plays second fiddle. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Apart from Grenache, twenty two other varieties are permitted throughout the entire Rhone Appellation, though generally no more than ten are employed in blends.

Rhone wine labels and the appellation system.

As in other French wine regions, the Rhone's Appellations d'Origine Controlees (AOCs) rely on sets of rules based around the concept of 'terroir' (the interaction of soil and climate on wine quality) as well as specific local and historic practises. Essentially, the whole system is organised as a pyramid. The further you climb towards the summit, the more restrictive the criteria for production, the more prestigious the terroir and the better the wines should be.

The 'Cotes du Rhone' AOC is the base of the pyramid. The second level is the 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' AOC which follows slightly different rules. Out of ninety 'communes' allowed to produce Cotes Du Rhone Villages, eighteen of them are allowed to step up the hierarchy ladder with the mention of the village name on their labels (e.g. 'Rasteau', 'Vacquerays' etc.), provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, we find the local appellations, for which the term 'Crus' is the norm. Here yields generally cannot exceed 35Hls/Ha and strict conditions for cultivation apply. Chateauneuf du Pape forms the apex of the Southern Rhone's appellation pyramid. The extraordinary and long-standing reputation of its wines is such that in the 14th century, the Papacy in Avignon favoured the village as their summer residence, expanding the vineyards to suitable surrounding areas. To this day, each bottle of Chateauneuf bears the coat-of-arms of the city of Avignon, with its two crossed keys, those of Saint Peter, the first Pope. Seven Popes later, the rigour established in those times has survived the centuries. In fact, Chateauneuf became the working model for France's earliest appellation laws. Under the rules, 13 different varieties are permitted, though Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault dominate over Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.
