2015 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee ReserveChateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenCellar: 5 - 6 Years (2025-2026)ABV: 14%Closure: CorkDomaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing an average of 24 months in old foudres.
Totally opaque dark red black colour with a deep dark red hue. Pronounced leathery top notes overlay black raspberries and liquorice with trailing black cherry, earth, dried meat and peppered herb scents. Showing much more fruit purity than the nose, the palate is engulfed with rich, opulent black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice flavours which evolve into scorched earth, peppered dried meats, dried herb and leather characters on the back half. Ripe chewy tannins provide a robust structure. Finishes long and concentrated with a lingering leather component.
Cellar 5-6 years.

Now that it has been in bottle a while, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is looking even better than I projected based on last year's prebottling sample. It's all violets, cherries, subtle allspice and clove and traditional garrigue notes of lavender and thyme. Full-bodied and rich, it's crazy complex, adding hints of tar and black olives on the long, silky finish. It should evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Sept 2018)Vivid ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe raspberry, cherry and garrigue, while a suave floral element expands with air. Fleshy, seamless and broad on the palate, offering intense black raspberry and fruitcake flavors that are braced and lifted by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral note builds as the wine opens up and carries through the sweet, strikingly long finish, which leaves behind red fruit liqueur and licorice notes.

Josh Raynolds - Vinous (Mar 2017)The 2015 Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is a beautiful, classic wine from the Feraud family that offers powerful notes of blackcurrants, peppered meat, garrigue, and that classic Pégau spice that's hard to find outside of this iconic estate. Possessing a deep ruby/plum color, beautiful complexity, full-bodied richness, and firm tannin, it has closed up slightly since I tasted it from barrel and is going to need 6-12 months of bottle age to bounce back, but this is a concentrated, powerful vintage for this estate that reminds me a slightly improved 2005.

2014 Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee LaurenceChateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDomaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months. According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Other Reviews....
In years in which there's no Cuvée da Capo, Feraud produces a Cuvée Laurence, which is similar to the Cuvée Reservée, but with extended aging (usually around four years) in foudre. The 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Laurence is the current release, bottled at the end of November 2018, and it's a beauty, marrying leather and cherry notes in a full-bodied but silky, easy-drinking format. A blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% other varieties, it should drink well for at least decade.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)Brilliant ruby-red. A complex, mineral-accented bouquet evokes raspberry and cherry preserves, incense and Moroccan spices, and a bright mineral flourish adds lift. Stains the palate with sappy, appealingly sweet red and blue fruit flavors complemented by suave floral and allspice notes. Shows real energy and spicy thrust on an extremely long, floral-driven finish framed by gentle, fine-grained tannins.

Josh Raynolds - Vinous (Dec 2019)The 2014 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence is more upfront, forward, and charming, with voluptuous notes of garrigue, kirsch, blackberries, and flowers. It too is medium to full-bodied, has overflowing Provençal charm, light tannins, and an outstanding finish. It doesn’t have the concentration of the 2013, but it has more charm and upfront appeal. It should still age for 15-20 years.

One of my favorite wines, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée is a classic. Beautiful on the nose, with notions of ground pepper, wild herbs, minerality and smoked plum and dark fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has plenty of tannin that comes through on the finish. Similar in style to a lighter-weight 2010, drink this beauty anytime over the coming 12-15 years.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee, still aging in foudres, was tasted from different lots. The most promising wine made here since the 2003, it is a full-bodied effort revealing dense, concentrated fruit, and high tannins that still need to be resolved. It will require some bottle age to round into drinking shape. The color is a dense plum/purple, and the wine shows considerable licorice, lavender, roasted herb, and meat juice characteristics, as well as a texture of beef blood – no doubt attributable to the old vines from which it is made. The fruit dominates, and the wine is intense, rich, and full-bodied. It will undoubtedly need 3-4 years of bottle age after its release, and should last 20-25 years based on the fact that their older vintages (i.e., 1979, 1981, 1983, and 1985) are all still in terrific condition.

Fine grained, slightly chalky but balanced tannins. Good length with medium to long aftertaste of dried herbs, black raspberry, leather and spice. The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee was about to be bottled at the time of my visit, and it will certainly be one of the better wines of the vintage. By the standards of Pegau, it is not a massive wine nor will it be terribly long-lived. However, this estate has an incredible track record in off years, so I would not be surprised to see this wine exceeding readers’ expectations in 10-12 years. Tasting through the three remaining lots that will be blended together, I rated them between 89 and 92. That makes it one of the better wines of the vintage. Medium to full-bodied, chewy and very evolved, the wine exhibits lots of earth, lavender and foresty/mossy notes intermixed with kirsch, peppery black currants and Christmas fruitcake spices. It should drink nicely for 10-12+ years. Laurence calls it a very “traditional” style that she believes will be as good as their 2006.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (May 2022)Saturated ruby. Deep-pitched red/blue fruit liqueur aromas pick up suggestions of licorice, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers and herbs with air. In a lush, weighty style, offering expansive black raspberry, cherry cola, singed plum and fruitcake flavors sharpened by a jolt of spiciness on the back half. A blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre, and 5% miscellaneous grapes, the 1995 is undoubtedly the finest wine this estate has produced since the renowned 1978. The wine possesses a roasted herb, meaty character accompanied by a lavish display of jammy black fruits, as well as superb concentration, admirable fat and density, adequate acidity, and a lusty, full-bodied finish with some tannin. Undoubtedly one of the top vintages of this wine, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Crau features classy notes of crushed stones and black tea to go along with ripe raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied yet silky, there's more power and richness in La Crau than in Piedlong, yet there's commensurate elegance and finesse. The wine grows in intensity on the finish without ever seeming heavy or overripe, instead offering hints of tea and licorice.

Slightly chewy mouthfeel, particularly towards the finish. Good structured tannins with an aftertaste of black cherries, dark raspberries, liquorice and peppered meats. A little tight at present this should open up nicely over the next 3-4 years.

Another blockbuster is the 2015 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes, which is based on 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. It sees a long maceration followed by aging in concrete tanks (there’s 10% of the Syrah aged in two-year-old barrels). Its deep purple color is followed by a full-bodied, mouth-filling, beautifully layered Rasteau that’s loaded with notions of blackberry jam, blackcurrants, licorice and black cherries. There’s some obvious minerality on the finish, and this beauty will benefit from short term cellaring and keep for a decade.

Located in Rasteau, Domaine Grand Nicolet is run by Jean-Pierre Bertrand, with consulting advice from Philippe Cambie. There are terrific wines across the board, and this estate is certainly in the top tier of Rasteau producers.
The flagship cuvee is the 2015 Rasteau les Esqueyrons, and it’s made from equal parts Grenache and Syrah that had the Grenache aged in tank and the Syrah in once used barrels. Its inky color is followed by a killer bouquet of ripe black cherries, blueberries, licorice and peppery herbs. Starting with 4.5 hectares of vines, further purchases over the years followed, and the family now own 16 hectares of vines concentrated in the northern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape and just outside of it, in the lieu-dit of Champauvins. Alain is a firm believer organic viticulture, noting "A great wine is one that is made from healthy grapes and that allows the unique character and complexity of its terroir to be expressed". This ethos is shared by Alain's children Christophe, Sébastien, and Hélène, who now run the estate and who are making some of the finest wines in their history.
Included in the purchase of the Domaine were plots of incredibly old Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah vines, many over 100 years in age and which form the basis of their stunning Vieilles Vignes cuvee. This modern styled example is a tiny production averaging around 350 cases per year. Les Origines is also blessed with old vine stocks, most over 65 years of age, and is equally as polished and pure in style. Finally the Domaine has a long history of white Chateauneuf du Pape production, continued now with their 100% Roussanne cuvee La Fontaine, another rarity with about 200 cases made each year. These are amongst the finest new discoveries from Chateauneuf du Pape that we've encountered in years.

Upon finishing his viticultural studies, Jean-Marie Royer took over the estate in 1985. After his father’s passing in 1966, the land had been let out to different vignerons of the appellation by family members and so, it was Jean-Marie's first task to rebuild the Domaine. Convincing his family to let him reclaim the vineyards was only a first step as the wines produced from the land were been sold entirely to the negociants. Slowly building credibility and recognition, he now produces a range of six different Chateauneuf expressions and the dark horse of the family, “Le Petit Roy.”

The monumental 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a candidate for perfection after several more years of bottle age. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple color with extraordinary “purity,” along with notes of spring flowers, luxurious levels of black raspberry and kirsch liqueur, licorice and mulberries. Layers of flavor hit the palate with exceptional freshness and definition as well as teeth-rattling intensity and power. This extraordinary tour de force is one of the greatest wines made in the world today. It should evolve easily for 15-20+ years. I have no idea what the alcohol levels are in these cuvees, but I’m sure they are pushing 16% or more. This is a legendary wine! The brilliant Julien Barrot has decided to produce only two cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape from the family’s nearly 32 acres of vineyards. It is amazing what Julien has accomplished since he began working at Domaine La Barroche in deluge-plagued 2002, the year when historical floods inundated Chateauneuf du Pape on September 8 and 9. The water could not have come at a worse time since prior to that it appeared to be a superb harvest. The first great vintage produced by Barrot was 2005, and he has continued with a remarkable succession of riveting wines. One of the world’s greatest red wines is his 300 or so cases of Pure that come from a lieu-dit called Grand Pierre next to the famed Chateau Rayas. The two cuvees called Signature and Terroir are now combined into one simply called Chateauneuf du Pape (the name may change in the future). It includes an intriguing component of less than 10% 70-year-old Cinsault, which gives the wine an extraordinary fragrance as well as a delicacy that can be missing in these southern Rhone wines. The Pure is 100% Grenache from 105-year-old vines.

Rayas-like with its perfumed kirsch, rose petal, dried spice and pepper aromas and flavors, this medium to full-bodied wine has beautiful mid-palate depth, a pure silk texture and building tannin on the finish. Incredibly rich in the vintage, it should age beautifully for 12-15 years or more. Drink 2014-2026. These awesome wines are made by the young, yet incredibly talented, Julien Barrot. Now producing just two cuvees from his 32 acres of sandy soils, he first took over the winemaking in 2002 and has since produced one spectacular vintage after another (don’t miss his 2010s!). The winemaking here is very traditional with some stem inclusion and aging all in tank and very old foudre. The wines typically show rich, voluptuous, yet elegant profiles and are relatively accessible in their youth, yet also age gracefully.

It wasn’t until Julian Barrot took over the winemaking responsibilities that the estate began to produce wines under their own label receiving almost instantaneous critical acclaim.
The average age of the vines at La Barroche is 60 years old with some of the Grenache plantings being over100 years old
Opaque dark red colour with deep dark red mauve hue. The nose displays aromas of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and spice. The palate boasts impressive weight with generous flavours of ripe blackberry, black plum and liquorice followed by some spice with underlying meaty characters. Firm, slightly dry tannins but in perfect balance. Long aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice, spice and blackpepper.

More structured, backward, and formidably endowed is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition. Made from a blend of over 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Cinsault, with some very old-vine fruit going into the blend, this wine is also aged in a combination of tank and foudre prior to bottling. Deep plum/ruby-colored with a striking nose of loamy soil scents interwoven with exuberant kirsch liqueur notes, licorice, and roasted Provencal herbs, the wine is backward, dense, full-bodied, and very pure, with a brilliant texture and length. This wine will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring and drink well for 15+ years.

The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Signature is a blend of 62% Grenache, 18% Mourvèdre, 13% Syrah and the rest Vaccarèse, Clairette Rose and Cinsault. Vinified all in concrete and aged in a combination of foudre, demi-muids and stainless steel, it offers a tight, grippy, medium to full-bodied and beautifully structured style, as well as classic notes of black raspberries, black cherries, crushed flowers and hints of crushed rock. I love its tension, purity and focus, and it has terrific length on the finish as well.

Jeb Dunnuck - Wine Advocate #227 (Oct 2016)(fermented in concrete eggs and aged in foudres and stainless steel tanks) Vivid ruby. Highly expressive cherry and black raspberry aromas are complicated by energetic floral and Asian spice nuances. Sappy, sweet and broad in the mouth, offering juicy, densely packed red and dark berry flavors that become deeper as the wine open up. Stains the palate and shows impressive vivacity on the persistent, floral-dominated finish, which is framed by silky, harmonious tannins.

Josh Raynolds - Vinous - 2010 Domaine La Barroche Pure Chateauneuf du Pape Magnum (1500ml)Chateauneuf du Pape, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther reviews...

Everything is picked by hand, sorted, and then mostly destemmed. Grown at 250 metres above sea level, the 2016 is a wonderfully aromatic, supple and delicious Côtes du Rhône.

The finest tradition cuvee yet made, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre aged in foudre and concrete tanks) possesses a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a bouquet of black currants, black cherries, garrigue, pepper, and lavender. It is a full-bodied, ripe, exceptionally elegant, pure wine to drink now or cellar for 12-15 years.
Shrewd connoisseurs of Chateauneuf du Pape should be paying attention to what is taking place at La Roquete. This property was acquired by the Brunier family (who also own Vieux Telegraphe) in the mid-eighties, and over the last 4-5 years they have made successful efforts to upgrade the quality dramatically.

Nearly as great as the Fleur, the 2016 Rasteau Cuvee Confiance is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. Raspberry and mint notes appear on the nose, followed by a full-bodied, rich, velvety wine with a never-ending finish. Despite the incredible richness and concentration, the wine remains fresh and fragrant, lithe and agile, turning silky and lingering. It's another tremendous effort from the Romero family. Joe Czerwinski – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateBased on Grenache (there’s some Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend) aged in foudre, the 2016 Rasteau Cuvée Confiance offers a more elegant, medium to full-bodied style that’s going to age beautifully. Terrific notes of cedar wood, dried garrigue, and ample red and black fruits all flow to a medium to full-bodied, silky Rasteau that has building tannins and impressive depth of fruit. The most impressive Rasteau to have ever passed these lips, the 2016 Rasteau Cuvee Fleur de Confiance is a full-bodied, richly muscular wine that takes all the warmth and power of the appellation and somehow turns it elegant. Black cherries, licorice and cocoa all come together seamlessly into a cascade of spice, cola and fruit, then ends with great length, soft tannins and finely ground stone. The secret to this 4,000-bottle cuvée is old-vine Grenache grown on blue clay.
