2022 Bordeaux

Even the most casual observer of Bordeaux would be familiar with the region's penchant for hyperbole when a new "great" vintage is on the horizon. 2022 is indeed a great vintage, and while the best from the year are riveting expressions of Bordeaux, not every producer navigated the season successfully so careful selection is still required. Crucial to the story of 2022 was the run of hot and dry conditions for much of Summer that challenged producers to be attentive at every stage of the vintage, harvest, and vinification. There will no doubt be much said during this campaign for strengths of the wines offered and their natural comparison to other legendary warm vintages. In many instances this will be well justified.

Curiously, while on numbers alone, there was a lot in common with the scorching 2003 vintage, the reality is the wines are nothing like that. Winemaking has come a long way in the 20 years since 2003, and an abundance of warm vintages has conditioned the vines and winemaking teams to adapt to these challenges more successfully. Another key difference was the cooler night time temperatures during Summer which allowed the grapes to retain acidity and fruit freshness. Indeed, the reports indicate while there are some rich and luscious wines, on the whole 2022 produced wines of intensity, with refined aromas and an energetic, vibrant feel. The consensus is these 2022s will be a joy to drink both on release, and in the (many) years ahead.
