Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

    Other Reviews....
Patchwork of sites for chardonnay. Organic/biodynamic farmed, zero sulphur as often is the way with Tissot.
It’s a lean and lighter expression but stacked with flinty, smoky elements and very saline overall. Green apple is the fruit connection, the rest is all stones and river pebbles and mineral water and brine. Racy, succulent to a puckering feel and ticklish to finish. It’s a distinct Patchwork release, complex but in a more quiet and compact frame. I still dig it. Lots. Drink 2023 - 2035.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

This is the latest edition of Vin Jaune W that was a massive success with the first release over a decade ago. The late great whisky producer in Burgundy, Michel Couvreur, has made some fine whiskies aged in Tissot’s Vin Jaune barrels and this wine reverses the concept. Fine Vin Jaune aged in whiskey barrels for almost 7 years. The Vin Jaune is so powerful that the nuances of whisky only adds a gentle facet.

2021 Benito Ferrara Terra d'Uva Greco di Tufo
    Campania, ITALY
    $44. 99

    $539.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13%
    Closure: Cork

The Greco grape variety is thought to have been brought to Southern Italy from Greece more than 2500 years ago. Sitting in the high altitude district of San Paolo which is situated within the commune of Tufo is what is considered by many critics as one of Italy’s best white wine producers and the number one producer of Greco di Tufo – Benito Ferrara. Fourth-generation viticulturalists Gabriella Ferrara and her husband Sergio run the estate with the assistance of oenologist Paolo Caciorgna who worked alongside Italy’s most famous consultant Giulio Gambelli for many years.
Fruit was sourced from vines aged between 5 to 60 years old.

The 2021 Greco di Tufo Terre d'Uva opens with a bouquet of tropical green melon, exotic florals and a spritz of lime. This is texturally deep, almost oily in feel, balanced by saline-minerals and crisp green apple. The Terre d'Uva finishes with a bitter tension, pinching at the cheeks with sour citrus while leaving the mouth watering for more. This zesty Greco will win a lot of hearts. Drink 2023 - 2026.

    2023 Best’s Great Western Riesling
    Great Western, Victoria, AUSTRALIA

    $275.88 Dozen

Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860s. Subsequent plantings followed in 1944 (since removed), 1978 and 1998. Always very flavoursome and very age worthy, the Best’s Great Western Rieslings are renown for their beautiful balance, texture and aromatics.
The 2023 vintage was long and late with the first Riesling grapes being harvested in early March. This long cool vintage allowed fruit flavours to mature, while natural acidity was retained.
Brilliant water like core with highlights of green around the outskirts. The nose offers up a symphony of lime, red apple and orange blossom aromas which are trailed by hints of honeysuckle and delicate spice. Intensely flavoured, lime, red apple and mandarin fruits are underscored by zippy acidity with some honeysuckle and flinty mineral characters unwinding across the back half. Finishes dry to off dry with a long zesty aftertaste.

Victoria’s Great Western region is firmly established as one of the most consistent riesling growers (outside of traditional regions). Whiplash-fast out of the blocks, with its mix of citrus, apple and slate to the fore, this wine will coast through to 2034.

Excellent riesling, having moved well away from the the oft-domestic norm of battery-acid dryness and talcy acidity, some years ago. Succulent kaffir lime, baking apple, quince and nashi pear. A waft of phenolics as useful as the trickle of acidity, juicy and palpably natural. This draws the saliva from the mouth. Reaching for the next glass is auto-pilot. Bravo! Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    Patagonia, ARGENTINA

    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13%

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America. Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added, while a conversation between friends has turned into a partnership with esteemed Burgundian Chardonnay producer Jean-Marc Roulot joining Piero in Patagonia in planting, farming, and vinification of Chardonnay at Chacra.

Located in the Rio Negro Valley in northern Patagonia, Argentina, Bodega Chacra is comprised of 24 hectares of vineyards planted mainly to Pinot Noir, along with a small amount of Chardonnay. Piero also values responsible farming as demonstrated by his grandfather at Sassicaia, and each of the vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the fruit is handled the gentlest way possible, with movements transferred by gravity, fermentation occurring in concrete, minimal new oak usage, and no fining or filtration at bottling. Piero's aim is to retain greater purity and transparency, and it's this ability for his wines to so clearly express their origin that's so engaging with Chacra wines. It's also one of the key attributes that only the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across the globe are able to achieve.

Mainque is a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot. Mainque Chardonnay comes from 3 parcels of land with a range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

Such a flinty nose that delivers a full package of minerality. Quarry, chalk, gun powder and lime. The nose really speaks to you. Quiet, flinty, a little sea spray and white flower perfume. Bright, tight, a fine chalky texture, ripe lemon/lime and white peach, a little honeycomb, wax and cashew, but still tense and kind of electric. Length is excellent. This is probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina and it will be hard to pass by. Beautiful brioche notes give a fine creaminess with mineral, fine reduction, beeswax and a hint of white sesame to the lemon curd. Extremely textured and tense on the palate with fresh, medium acidity and a long, long finish. This is all about texture and purity. Also intellectual. Drink or hold. From one of the masters of developed semillon, helped in this instance by the great semillon vintage. Its bouquet half suggests the use of oak – not true. It's a hypnotic wine, with Meyer lemon driving the citrus circus and the wheels of acidity. Drink by 2042.

Few semillons scale the heights of consistency and excellence that this wine does. August 2023 release.
It’s got gentle development in faint creaminess to texture, despite the chalky pucker and chew. Scents show off nougat, light honey toastiness, lime, lemon, dried apple. It’s lovely to take a big whiff of and the palate echoes those characters well. Tense acidity is a mainstay, the length of flavour extreme and palate staining in a gentle sense. The gentle development lends a sweetness to fruit, but geez, that pure, cool, citrusy and mineral-laden acidity is a force. It’s wonderfully balanced and extremely good. Drink 2023-2040+

An iridescent mid-yellow flecked with green, the color of semillon from these parts nudging adolescence, little more. Loads in store, attested by a faint whiff of buttered white toast and lemon drop. The acidity, febrile and gloriously juicy, carries the flavors extremely long. The wine is typical featherweight, belied by the intensity of flavor at its core. This is exceptional. Inimitable. Benchmark wine. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

Wet growing conditions that prevailed through to January ’22 were well-managed across the patchwork quilt of vineyards spread across the Hunter. Flavours of lemongrass, citrus and lanolin all contributing, this has the balance and length to transform itself over the next five years. Drink by 2032.

James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion

It is important to remember that this is the basic Brokenwood release, the standard, the bottom rung if you must. So you’d expect a decent wine for good value, without getting too carried away. Imagine my surprise… This is a stunning young Semillon. 2022 saw the weather gods doing their utmost to force local winemakers into their best Noah and the Ark impersonations, and while that may impact the reds, even that remains to be seen. Hunter winemakers are not unfamiliar with a touch of precipitation and have learnt to handle it. If ever anyone wanted evidence of this, here you have it. What a cracking young white! Apparently, wine show judges are in agreement as it has already picked up at least one trophy. If this is the bottom rung, bring on the ’22 big guns.
The colour is just the vaguest hint of lemon. The nose confirms this as very much the modern form of Hunter Sem – while retaining the ability to age for many years, there is also flavour galore in its early days. Good intensity and pinpoint focus with excellent length and a fine line of acidity. Lemon drop notes, fresh citrus, hints of ginger – a wine which dances. Fresh, balanced, full of life and very long, enjoy this now but please put a case away to share over the next decade. Try this, put a case of this away for a decade and at the same time, a case of a good Premier Cru Burgundy which costs five or six times as much, and then see which you prefer. You’ll wonder why you waste money on famous wines. Drink 2022-2032.

The 2019 Riesling/Grüner Veltliner is rather lovely in a serious way. While you might think the combination of these two varieties would create a light, linear style, this is quite the opposite with its rich, savory, dense core of fruit. It’s dry, fresh and firm, with a satisfying bit of grunt on the long, grippy finish. You can expect lingering layers of apple, citrus and spice flavors, but the joy of this wine is truly in its multifaceted textural elements. It continues to improve year on year. Drink 2022 - 2029.

Viognier by Farr is a blend of two vineyards. The first is the original house block planted in 1994, which has friable red soil over limestone leading to sandstone - similar soils to the Sangreal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by Farr. The second vineyard is a younger planting of unknown clones in red ironstone soil. The Viognier is a difficult variety to manage, with the tendency to grow horizontally rather than vertically, being very thirsty and having a tendency to become sunburnt easily. This prompted winemaker Nick Farr to pick the fruit earlier in order to retain natural acidity while maintaining varietal character, creating a more delicate and refined wine.
Viognier is foot-stomped and left for two or more hours on its skins, to extract phenolics, flavour and texture. The fruit is then pressed, cooled and put straight into barrel with all solids for a natural fermentation. Malolactic conversion is encouraged with gentle stirring during the end of autumn. The wine is then racked, fined, filtered and bottled 11 months after harvest.

This is really compelling. In fact it’s refreshing first and foremost, in that it’s riven with fresh apple and nectarine flavours – energetic, mouthwatering – but then it’s punched with apricot kernel and riverstones, chalk and ginger-spice-like characters too, which is where the compelling aspect comes in. It feels powerful. It extends long. It washes through the mouth and brings you back for more, refreshed. It’s a fantastic white wine, saline-almost, all fruit and stones, spice and steel. Founded in 1970, Cape Mentelle is among Margaret River's original five wineries, leading the way in developing the region's famous wine styles.
The Chardonnay is cultivated in two southern vineyards, located approximately 15 minutes south of the Margaret River township. These two sites vary significantly in aspect, soil composition, temperature ranges, and rainfall, contributing to a diverse fruit profile. Handpicked fruit is harvested in the cool of the morning and whole bunch pressed to barrel for wild fermentation and matured on lees for ten months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a distinct glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Attractive white peach and nectarine aromas are trailed by hints of dried honey, biscuity oak and gun flint notes. 2021 is proving to be an excellent vintage in the Margaret River region, but one needs a long memory to recall when they were not blessed with fine conditions. The fruit is sourced from the Crossroads and Chapman vineyards, mostly the gingin clone. Whole bunch pressed and fermented in barrels, maturation is in French oak (88%) and tank (12%) for ten months, before transferring all the finished wines to tank for a further five months with monthly lees stirring. A gleaming pale gold and such an alluring nose. The complexity is immediately evident with wonderful floral notes, stonefruits and vanillin oak, all finely integrated. Tropical notes emerge more on the palate than with the aroma.
Balanced, finesse and exceptional length are very much the hallmarks of this stunning Chardonnay. Drink over the next eight to ten years with ease. Drink 2023-2033.

Being owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Lafite fame) has been a boon for Chateau Rieussec. Since taking over the property in 1984, the planted vineyard area has increased from nearly 40 hectares to roughly 90 hectares today. Investment has also been made in the cellars, and the winemaking team are now better placed to work with the multiple small lots stemming from various parcels and picking runs through the vineyard. Across the various plots the plantings are broken down as 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak. The chateau also produce a second wine called Carmes de Rieussec, which is subjected to the same rigour in the vineyard and winery as the first wine, however the emphasis with Carmes is more on beautiful aromatics and citrus flavours. Barrels showing more of these traits are selected to be bottled as Carmes de Rieussec after 18 months of elevage.

    Other Reviews....

Located in the Ligurian Riviera at Albenga between the hills and the Mediterranean sea, Cascina Fèipu was founded in 1960’s when Agostino Parodi began converting his father’s (Filippo – Fèipu in dialect) orchards to grape growing. Since there were no appellations for Ligurian wine at the time, Agostino chose to name the winery after his father and their locality, Massaretti.
The vineyards are planted on sandy alluvial soil and enjoys striking diurnal temperature shifts thanks to the alternation between winds from the sea during the day and from the land at night. These two factors combine to provide the perfect home for Pigato to develop their full aromatic potential, giving light wines that are easy to drink but more elegant and complex.

Despite its levity, it is long and persistent through the finish, spooling off into the distance, with white tea, jasmine, green apple skins, scratched lime zest and what feels like a million other tiny characters ... like pulverized confetti. It's such a pleasure to drink this. It's pure and crystalline. Drink 2023-2033.
