Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.
Other Reviews....
The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese Klaus (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from fruit harvested on 60-year-old vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. Still very reductive at first and herbal at first, this needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a superbly attractive and fresh nose of minty herbs, aniseed, elderflower, Conference pear, and mustard seeds. The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Gisela (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was harvested in a parcel still planted with 70-80-year-old un-grafted vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This offers a beautifully fresh and magnificently herbal and spicy nose of candied lime, grapefruit zest, redcurrant, violet, fresh almond, and greengage. Superb aged riesling, always released to excellent effect following a decade of bottle age. Light-weighted, with an intensity of flavor and precision that belies its balletic gait. Think spiced quince, honeydew, candied citrus, lemon balm and a faint whiff of kerosene. Yet there is nothing untoward here. The acidity is nicely nestled into what feels like an almost plump mid-palate after the effects of ageing. This is a cooler block on this esteemed site, its wine really sitting pretty. Drink now. Lime, lemon zest, honey, quince, mint, a discreet petrol top note, slightly spicy too. It has more flavour and less overt acidity than the Block 114, a lick of spice and dried peel, some toasty complexity, with some Bickford’s lime cordial on a dry finish of excellent length and dusty grip.

The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is concentrated and very intense on the fruit-driven, deep and spicy nose. The wine is very elegant and refined on the dense and seriously structured, salivating palate that is a promise for the future and endlessly salty in the present. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 08 24 in January 2025. Drink 2030-2070.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a serene, stony, salty slaty breeze. The palate is exquisitely fine and very bright, luminous even, soaring upward as it reaches down into the slate, embodying the total elegance of the site. Slenderness and serenity are exemplary. Drink 2028-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThe sensuous curves of Art Nouveau design and joyful flourishes of rococo both give an idea of what Mosel riesling elegance means, but in a masterpiece like this it takes on a totally distinctive feeling unlike anything else on Planet Wine. The white peach fruit, white flower aromas and slatey minerality all tingle on your palate, then flicker on and on in a totally fascinating manner in the nearly endless finish. The touch of sweetness is already beautifully integrated, although the wine just began a decades-long life. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese is clear, deep, intense and fresh on the complex and still reductive nose. Rich and lush on the concentrated palate, this is a dense and savory, textured and rich Auslese with saline grip and good tension, but it's currently pretty closed and not really singing, even with a certain astringency (from a second bottle). 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 10 24 in January 2025. Drink 2030-2070.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThis fabulous Auslese lays out a whole basket of exotic fruit before you. The almost supernatural freshness is no less exciting. Terrific tension between the two, the acidity giving this great brilliance on the extremely precise, medium-bodied palate. The finish almost perfectly balances the restrained richness and intense wet-stone minerality. Limited production. Still very youthful, but how can you resist the beauty? Drink or hold.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese, made virtually without botrytis from fully ripe grapes, offers a shy tone of stone and yeast. The palate features Mirabelle jelly with lovely overtones of lemon balm and fern, wonderfully cut by freshness with a pithy, zesty edge of lime and mainly pale lemon. The finish resembles lemon and yellow plum sorbet, exquisitely fresh and palate-cleansing, yet with exquisite sweetness. Incredibly fine, slender and so balanced. Drink 2028-2060.

Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThis youthful Mosel riesling Auslese has a vibrancy and precision that is often missing in these wines, blanketed by thick botrytis richness. I love the mint and chamomile freshness that pulls you into this juicy and concentrated wine and also make it very filigreed on the medium-bodied palate. Incredible precision and subtlety in the super-long finish. Try to be patient, because this is a marathon runner. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Heady and head-spinningly diverse floral perfume, nut pastes and pit fruit preserves inform the nose and the luscious, glossy, creamy, delicate palate of this beauty. Nougat and quince jelly are the strongest midpalate impressions. Lime zest and fruit pit serve for welcome, enlivening counterpoint on a finish whose vibrancy and exuberance are amazing, especially from a wine of such sheer overall richness and ripeness as well as such creaminess of texture. Sweetness is prominent, but by no means excessive. The Prüms insisted that this wine issued from virtually botrytis-free albeit desiccated fruit.

Fragrant with wildflowers and wildflower honey but no real sense of sweetness in the aroma. A touch of fresh pear, slightly richer in than the Limestone. Dry and textured on the palate even with the sweetness (I usually find sweeter wines have a more rounded texture), a chalky, dry contrast with the actual sweetness in the wine. Opens to a little bit of white pepper. Dancing and expressive, that chalkiness brings it to perfect harmony. Extremely fresh acidity gives it an arrow-like heart in a scented exterior. Bottled last week. From vineyards all over Westhofen. A few tiny bubbles of CO2 from the fermentation, which, suggests Felix Keller, ‘Gives another dimension to the wine’. TA 9 g/l, RS 36 g/l.
Bright, intense stony citrus – lemon and lime – but also spring blossom and a hint of green apple. Marked citrus/lime purity with a delicate chalky limestone-induced texture. The stony sensation on the palate makes you think it is drier than it is. Salivating, great tension. Long and pure and stony, almost dry-tasting on the finish. Long, beautifully balanced. RR refers to Riesling from red soils – a half-hectare parcel within Kirchspiel that gives fruit that is a little more spicy than fruit that goes into Von der Fels. This parcel doesn't always ferment to complete dryness, as was the case in 2022, where it has also been blended with some top parcels from Abtserde and Morstein (usually destined for the GGs) that also didn't ferment totally dry. The resulting blend is just off-dry, with around 12 g/L of residual sugar, making this RR a serious example of feinherb.

When you taste a wine like this you ask yourself, why more people don’t drink Riesling. It’s from Watervale in a very good year. It’s taut and racy with a striking crystalline purity throughout its linear frame. Floral with lemon citrus aromas and a slaty crunchy palate feel. This is high class Riesling from an outstanding single vineyard. Drink 2024-2039.
