Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe Rothenberg never fails to fascinate with its intriguing combination of grapefruit and spice. Plenty of patience with the harvest has been rewarded with a successful alliance of sweet citrus fruit including mandarin, juicy acidity and generous body, but the icing on the cake, as always, is that fine dusting of sweet spices which gets the palate tingling.

Michael Schmidt - jancisrobinson.comFermented and aged 90% in oak (1,200-liter Stückfass), the 2016 Rothenberg Riesling GG has a clear, pure, deep and spicy bouquet that indicates great complexity and elegance. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, pure and very elegant Riesling with intense fruit, fine tannins and a long, intense finish. This Rothenberg is ripe, rich and lush but highly elegant, fresh and even finessed, with enormous salinity and a very long finish. Just 12.18% alcohol. This is a great Riesling that can age for 20, probably more, years. Great balance and complexity.

Gunderloch's 2020 Pettenthal GG is clear, bright, ripe and elegant yet still yeasty on the nose. Delicately juicy and round in the mouth, with fine, crystalline acidity structure and increasing intensity, this is a still-creamy yet persistently salty and tensioned Riesling with mouth-filling elegance and piquancy. A fragrant and pure riesling sourced from a single vineyard in Flaxman Valley, high up in the Eden Valley. Pale with a flash of green and aromas of Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime and grapefruit with hints of Christmas lily, lime sorbet, crushed quartz, lemongrass, grapefruit zest and frangipani. Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionA classic Eden Valley Riesling, from a great year, and in particular, the Flaxman Valley sub-region. A very pale lemon hue, this is a brilliant follow-up to the initial release last year – at least as good, probably better. This in your cellar for the next decade or two will make you think you are wise indeed. And you would be correct. Wonderful aromatics, with notes of florals, lemon curd, limes and a supporting line of sea breeze acidity. The wine has balance, intensity and finesse. A wonderful Riesling, with serious length and a fifteen years plus ahead of it. A star, and there is room here for this to elevate its score in the coming years. Drink 2025-2040+

Clare Valley Riesling, here from the Watervale sub-region, is one of the great gems of the Aussie wine treasure chest. For me, while the Flaxman’s might have been lineball with last year’s release, this is surely a step-up. A must for the cellar. Pale gleaming lemon in colour, the nose offers us exquisite floral notes and citrus, especially grapefruit. Fragrant and elegant, we have spices, limes and hints of river stones. Such balance! A majestic Riesling. There is a riot of flavour and yet an arcade of elegance. We have a line of oyster shell acidity, while the wine really does have impeccable balance (worth mentioning twice) and superb length. A Riesling which will drink beautifully, ageing gracefully, over the next fifteen to twenty years. Love it. Given Chris Hatcher’s decades of experience in the Aussie wine industry and his contacts, I guess it is no surprise. Drink 2025-2045.

Brings some cracking acidity to concentrated lemon-lime citrus Riesling fruit and the result is quite startling and perky. There is an impressive, driving acidity – brisk, busy and racy – which filters through every moment the wine is on the tongue. In keeping with its Eden Valley origin, the apple blossom, honeysuckle florals are inviting and in harmony with green apple, grapefruit pith, lemons and limes, bath salts, saline and flinty, wet rock minerals. The palate is crisp and moves at a clip before finishing on a long, attractive floral note. And, as always, Julius Riesling is a keeper, a wine that can only – and most definitely, does – improve with time. Drink 2025-2045.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a serene, stony, salty slaty breeze. Anne Krebiehl MW - VinousThe sensuous curves of Art Nouveau design and joyful flourishes of rococo both give an idea of what Mosel riesling elegance means, but in a masterpiece like this it takes on a totally distinctive feeling unlike anything else on Planet Wine. The white peach fruit, white flower aromas and slatey minerality all tingle on your palate, then flicker on and on in a totally fascinating manner in the nearly endless finish. The touch of sweetness is already beautifully integrated, although the wine just began a decades-long life. Drink or hold.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThis fabulous Auslese lays out a whole basket of exotic fruit before you. The almost supernatural freshness is no less exciting. Terrific tension between the two, the acidity giving this great brilliance on the extremely precise, medium-bodied palate. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese, made virtually without botrytis from fully ripe grapes, offers a shy tone of stone and yeast. The palate features Mirabelle jelly with lovely overtones of lemon balm and fern, wonderfully cut by freshness with a pithy, zesty edge of lime and mainly pale lemon. Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese LGK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. Jean Fisch and David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesThe 2022 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese Lange Goldkapsel was designated thus because it was not found typical enough for a Beerenauslese, despite reaching sufficient must weight, it was made with 55-60% of botrytis. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Heady and head-spinningly diverse floral perfume, nut pastes and pit fruit preserves inform the nose and the luscious, glossy, creamy, delicate palate of this beauty. Nougat and quince jelly are the strongest midpalate impressions. Lime zest and fruit pit serve for welcome, enlivening counterpoint on a finish whose vibrancy and exuberance are amazing, especially from a wine of such sheer overall richness and ripeness as well as such creaminess of texture. Sweetness is prominent, but by no means excessive. The Prüms insisted that this wine issued from virtually botrytis-free albeit desiccated fruit.

Rejuvenated in 1999, the original plantings date back to the 1840’s making them some of the oldest vines in South Australia.

2024 Keller Limestone (off-dry) RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANYReduced from $89.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 11%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
Sourced largely from the Hubacker and Kirchspiel Grosse Lage vineyards, the Limestone Riesling is a study in tension and clarity. It combines concentrated fruit and spice with a gentle touch of sweetness, all carried by Keller's hallmark, finely etched acidity. The result is a wine that shows remarkable focus and drive while remaining accessible and immediate, a perfect introduction to the off-dry style of the estate.

With air, more smoky, but with the sweetness of a Kabinett wine, the fruit is highlighted. Fruity yet stony. Generous and fresh at the same time. An intense Kabinett with excellent balance even with very high acidity. Needs time to become less primary. Drink 2026-2035.

2024 Keller Von der Fels RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANYReduced from $115.00$105. 00Bottle$1260.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling.
Much of this quality stems from remarkable raw material. The estate farms some of the Rheinhessen's greatest sites: Morstein, Abtserde, Kirchspiel and Hubacker, with most vines now well over 30 years old, and many far older. Yields rarely exceed 35 hl/ha, harvest is deliberately late, and meticulous hand selection allows for long skin contact before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in a mix of old oak and stainless steel, always with an eye toward transparency and finesse rather than weight.
While more than 85 percent of Keller's holdings lie within Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, only a small proportion is bottled under those designations. The estate's calling card, Riesling von der Fels, has taken on a greater role in recent years, both in scale and in significance. Initially conceived as a cuvée of young-vine fruit from top sites, it now incorporates a growing proportion of mature vines producing fruit of genuine GG quality. The result is a dry Riesling that captures the essence of the Keller style with remarkable clarity and precision.
Other Reviews....
The 2024 Riesling von der Fels, made with 50% grapes from Kirchspiel and the other 50% from Frauenberg, Hubacker, Abtserde and Morstein, was vinified in stainless steel and 600- to 2,400-liter oak vats. The wine displays bright, elegant, fresh and delicately spicy fruit with citrus and salty notes. Lean, elegant and juicy on the palate, with plenty of salt, a firm structure and lively citrus notes, this is an almost light, aromatic and very drinkable dry Riesling from shell limestone and limestone soils. It has a savory finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025. Drink 2028-2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe winery’s calling card, says Keller. Includes a higher percentage of Kirchspiel (45%) than normal, with one barrel from vines planted 1964, two barrels of Morstein and AbtsE and a bit of Hubacker. Also the younger Frauenberg vines. Average vine age 30 years. No longer really the young vines though that is how this cuvée started. 40,000 bottles produced. To be released May 2025. Cask sample.
Lightly flinty aroma, pure salty-sour citrus. More mineral and less Riesling-defined than usual. High acid, great tension. Minerality of the vintage and Kirchspiel. A serious Von der Fels. Tight, bone dry, sinewy but with a mouth-watering grapefruit-like fruit foundation. Texture, too, with high dry extract in 2024 giving body to balance the freshness. Acidity is high but integrated. Drink 2027-2035.

2024 Keller RR RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANYReduced from $190.00$173. 00Bottle$2076.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. RR stands for Riesling from red-soiled parcels within Kirchspiel, where the iron-rich earth gives a spicier, more textural profile than the limestone sites used for Von der Fels. In some vintages the fermentation finishes completely dry, while in others a small touch of residual sugar remains, creating a beautifully balanced feinherb expression. The 2024 vintage offers bright fruit, fine grip and an energetic, savoury edge that highlights the distinct personality of these red soils.
