Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water. With their straightforward approach to winemaking the Webers craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings displaying well-integrated acidity from their low yielding old vines, and are bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2022er Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Slightly reductive at first, this quickly opens up to reveal beautiful notes of vineyard peach, Conference pear, minty herbs, and stone fruits. The wine proves incredibly creamy and refined on the delicately smooth and beautifully refined palate. The finish is more focused as zesty elements come through. Aromatic and fruity flavors are wrapped into fine spices and herbal elements in the after-taste. Drink 2027-2042.

The 2022er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was made from clean fruit harvested rather late at 90° Oechsle from vines planted in the 1960s in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a fresh and delicately floral nose of bright white and yellow fruits, candied grapefruit, may tree, cassis, and smoke. The wine is magnificently playful and juicy on the clean and bright palate. The finish is very long and crystal clear. This is a splendid and refined Auslese. Drink 2032-2062.

This is fresh and crunchy and defined by its purity and clarity. It's a wine that has a surprising ability to age despite the price point and one that looks so good in its youth. Jim Barry purchased the Lodge Hill vineyard in 1977, convinced that it would produce some of the best Riesling in Clare. Situated on the eastern ranges of the township of Clare, it is one of the highest vineyards in the Valley at an altitude of 480 metres, and is ideal for producing steely, minerally Rieslings, distinctive to the area.

Brilliant straw colour with green tinged edges and a watery hue. Elevated lime and lemon butter scents have a distinct oily toast like overlay followed by some steely kerosene notes. Zippy acidity underpins lime and lemon flavours with tertiary elements of toast, oily kerosene like elements and wet steel building across the back half. Oily like texture finishing long and dry.

Brilliant pale straw core with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Intense lime and citrus aromas are welded to oily toast, kerosene, lemon butter, faint bees wax and spice notes. Focused lime and citrus fruits remain in the drivers seat with notions of bees wax, oily toast like characters, lemon butter and wet steel extending across the back half. Precise acidity finishing very dry and tense with a waxy feel.

Superb aged riesling, always released to excellent effect following a decade of bottle age. Light-weighted, with an intensity of flavor and precision that belies its balletic gait. Think spiced quince, honeydew, candied citrus, lemon balm and a faint whiff of kerosene. Yet there is nothing untoward here. The acidity is nicely nestled into what feels like an almost plump mid-palate after the effects of ageing. This is a cooler block on this esteemed site, its wine really sitting pretty. Drink now. A very mature release here. Patience from the Barry family, delivered to you. Magnificent. Complex, supple and loaded with honey toast, truffle and sugared almond. The calling cards of lime, preserved lemon and spicy ginger work their magic in bouquet and palate. A gourmet wine, with so much going on in each mouthful and plenty to savour. Complexity, structure and vitality all here, too. This is a superb cellar release. Drink by 2030.

Australian wine producers do love having the word ‘block’ in a wine name. I’ll knock your flamin’ block off you drongo. Vineyard sits at 497 metres above sea level. Planted in 1979.
Lime, lemon zest, honey, quince, mint, a discreet petrol top note, slightly spicy too. It has more flavour and less overt acidity than the Block 114, a lick of spice and dried peel, some toasty complexity, with some Bickford’s lime cordial on a dry finish of excellent length and dusty grip.
Very good aged Clare Riesling, and distinctive in that style. Drink 2023-2033+

They feature racy acidity, a pronounced minerality, and distinct fruit aromas and flavours. They often become accessible slightly earlier than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr wines and are delightfully mouthwatering. The hill faces slightly more westerly and has deeper soils than Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which act as excellent water reservoirs. With a gradient of 45 to 65 percent, the soils, if they can even be called soils, consist of deeply weathered Devonian slate interspersed with parcels of blue slate.

Wehlener Sonnenuhr has the highest pure stone content of all the Prum vineyards and, along with neighbouring Zeltingen, is the steepest, boasting a dizzying 65 to 70 percent gradient. The vineyards of Bernkasteler Badstube border those of Graacher Himmelreich. The slopes sit on a marginally shallower gradient with deeper soils than both Graach and Wehlen. A south-westerly orientation allows the vines longer exposure to the afternoon sun. Badstube typically produces wonderfully floral, delicate, and mineral-driven wines. Overall, these wines are usually slightly more delicate on the palate than their siblings from Graacher Himmelreich and Wehlener Sonnenuhr.

The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard borders the northern boundary of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. It is a warm site with a large percentage of ungrafted vines. Joh. Jos. Prum's parcel comes from a patch of old vines, aged 60 to 70 years, planted directly around the sundial. The vines here are said to be the hardest working in the Prum vineyards due to the younger slate's lower water-holding capacity, meaning the roots must work overtime to achieve the same concentration levels as the other vineyards.

The 2024 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese offers wet stone and dried herbs on the nose, almost like deadnettle crushed on slate, with the tenderest smokiness. The palate then adds a gorgeous streak of ripe Reine Claude plum with a juiciness that softens the stone. It becomes agile, sinuous and animated. What lovely character, subtlety, elegance and astonishing saltiness this has that seemingly swallows most of the sweetness. Its subtle, stony length is remarkable. Drink 2028-2060.

The wines of Graacher Himmelreich often challenge those from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, especially in hot, dry years. They feature racy acidity, a pronounced minerality, and distinct fruit aromas and flavours. They often become accessible slightly earlier than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr wines and are delightfully mouthwatering. The hill faces slightly more westerly and has deeper soils than Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which act as excellent water reservoirs. With a gradient of 45 to 65 percent, the soils, if they can even be called soils, consist of deeply weathered Devonian slate interspersed with parcels of blue slate.

The next wave of flavor pushes into greengage and juicy white peach notes, always tempered by vivid citrus. The 2024 has gorgeous linearity and such a tingling, sherbet-like insistence. The 2022er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese LGK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a gorgeously refined and sumptuous nose of almond paste, pineapple, honeyed yellow peach, tangerine, candied orange zest, fresh apricot, passion fruit, thyme, and smoke. The wine proves magnificently playful on the rich yet refined palate. There is great sweetness and intensity, but also airy and elegant elements which come into play. The energy and finesse in the magnificently long finish are remarkable. What a stunning dessert wine!

Heady and head-spinningly diverse floral perfume, nut pastes and pit fruit preserves inform the nose and the luscious, glossy, creamy, delicate palate of this beauty. Nougat and quince jelly are the strongest midpalate impressions. Lime zest and fruit pit serve for welcome, enlivening counterpoint on a finish whose vibrancy and exuberance are amazing, especially from a wine of such sheer overall richness and ripeness as well as such creaminess of texture. Sweetness is prominent, but by no means excessive. The Prüms insisted that this wine issued from virtually botrytis-free albeit desiccated fruit.

Kanta Riesling by Egon Müller is a unique winemaking partnership where German tradition and precision meets the premium, cool climate fruit from the Adelaide Hills. Fruit is sourced from the Argyle Vineyard, a high altitude Adelaide Hills site that sits over 400m above sea level and is flecked with traces of iron stone. Rejuvenated in 1999, the original plantings date back to the 1840’s making them some of the oldest vines in South Australia.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with green tinted edges and a watery hue. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
Much of this quality stems from remarkable raw material. The estate farms some of the Rheinhessen's greatest sites: Morstein, Abtserde, Kirchspiel and Hubacker, with most vines now well over 30 years old, and many far older. Yields rarely exceed 35 hl/ha, harvest is deliberately late, and meticulous hand selection allows for long skin contact before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in a mix of old oak and stainless steel, always with an eye toward transparency and finesse rather than weight.
While more than 85 percent of Keller's holdings lie within Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, only a small proportion is bottled under those designations. The estate's calling card, Riesling von der Fels, has taken on a greater role in recent years, both in scale and in significance. Initially conceived as a cuvée of young-vine fruit from top sites, it now incorporates a growing proportion of mature vines producing fruit of genuine GG quality. The result is a dry Riesling that captures the essence of the Keller style with remarkable clarity and precision.

It is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
RR stands for Riesling from red-soiled parcels within Kirchspiel, where the iron-rich earth gives a spicier, more textural profile than the limestone sites used for Von der Fels. In some vintages the fermentation finishes completely dry, while in others a small touch of residual sugar remains, creating a beautifully balanced feinherb expression. The 2024 vintage offers bright fruit, fine grip and an energetic, savoury edge that highlights the distinct personality of these red soils.

Tank sample. They don't analyse the wines until bottling but this probably has around 40 g/l residual sugar and TA 9.5 g/l.
Fragrant with wildflowers and wildflower honey but no real sense of sweetness in the aroma. A touch of fresh pear, slightly richer in than the Limestone. Dry and textured on the palate even with the sweetness (I usually find sweeter wines have a more rounded texture), a chalky, dry contrast with the actual sweetness in the wine. Opens to a little bit of white pepper. Dancing and expressive, that chalkiness brings it to perfect harmony. Extremely fresh acidity gives it an arrow-like heart in a scented exterior. Drink 2024-2035.

Sourced predominantly from the Hubacker and Kirchspiel 'GG' sites, the limestone presents incredibly concentrated fruit and spice along with a gentle touch of sweetness, Sabre-like acidity brought together in seamless balance.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
