  The 2018 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is still discreet but deep and vegetal on the coolish and still slightly reductive nose that opens up slowly with aeration. There is an expressive slate character here and coolish precision in terms of fruit flavors. Classy on the first palate, this is a crystalline, elegant and piquant, vital and crunchy Auslese that dinks quite well even in its youth. Based on the wine's density and piquancy, however, I recommend to cellar it for at least a decade. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

  To my surprise, this delivered more effusive as well as decadent floral perfume than many a non-Himmelreich Prüm 2018, along with less of the citricity that I associate with this site. No doubt partly in consequence of those factors, there is a stronger sense of sheer sweetness here than in the other Auslesen of this collection. But of course, it is very early days for assessing a Prüm Himmelreich Auslese, that description being among those most consistently associated with ageworthiness on the Mosel. Scents and palate presence of fading lily blossom, Golden Delicious apple essence, overripe quince and Persian melon combine for a decadently heady and rich performance, with a glossy, creamy texture and prominent sweetness managing to avoid heaviness or stickiness en route to a caressingly and envelopingly lingering finish.

While it’s not as effusively ripe as its Wehlener counterpart nor as brightly engaging as this collection’s Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese, this lusciously lingering beauty has a long life ahead of it, even by estate standards.

  Scents of quince and apple jelly are accompanied by a surprisingly greenhouse-like evocation of diverse flowers and foliage. I say “surprisingly” because many of the Prüm 2018s deliver an especially heady, sweet, and often even decadent sort of floral perfume. Honeydew and Persian melons supply extremely ripe yet freshly juicy fruit that, when combined with the confitured quince and apple, make for an exceedingly luscious midpalate impression, reinforced by textural gloss and prominent but not excessive sweetness. The finish lingers impressively, reprising a welcome inner-mouth hint of flower shop. Look for this to deliver much more in future and to enjoy at least the typical ageworthiness of a Prüm Wehlener Auslese, if not more.

Although the harmonious, lusciously layered finish lacks the clarity of the corresponding Zeltinger, it displays superb persistence and incorporates a mouthwatering suffusion of mineral salts. Here is another instance where the Prüms’ general observation almost certainly holds true: Wehlener Sonnenuhr needs longer to show its potential than a wine of identical Prädikat from one of their other sites.

  2013 is seen by the Prum family as the finest vintage since the legendary 1976 vintage, and uniquely this year one with only Auslese wines commercially released. A long, slow ripening season with a very late harvest with high levels of botrytis has created wines with added richness and depth, but also high levels of ripe acidity. These will be extremely long lived wines, but approachable young, and each expressing their vineyard origin with exacting clarity.

  “Despite the high concentration, mainly achieved by the remarkable noble rot, which often requires much more patience in the early stage of development, these wines are opening earlier than we expected and are already very attractive now. Super lush and round on the palate, this is a gorgeously rich and supple Spätlese with remarkable finesse and elegance. The acidity is ripe and fully integrated. The Zeltinger drinks perfectly today—and it won't survive in any cellar, because you just can't resist it.

  The 2017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is fine and flinty on the highly elegant and beautifully slatey nose with its discreet and refined flinty aromas. Salty-piquant and fresh on the palate, this Spätlese has a lot of elegance, charm and finesse and is quite creamy textured on the finish. This is a crystalline Riesling, and its finish is crunchy, fresh and piquant, with a creamy texture and good tension but also a frisky and serious character. You can enjoy the wine today, but cellaring makes much more sense for now. Tasted in March 2019.

  Apple jelly, pear preserves and caramel studded with white raisin and candied citrus peels make for an aromatic display of head-turning intensity and a creamy, glycerol-rich palate of similarly remarkable concentration and allure. A vein of fresh apple and grapefruit is tapped to introduce unexpected primary juiciness into the layers of confitured, lightly torrefied and desiccated fruit concentrates, and the extraordinarily long, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish also affords glimpses of smoky and stony mineral nuances rare in a Riesling this rich. There’s no youthful reticence to this Wehlener! The share of botrytis here was minimal, according to Katharina Prüm.

  The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Gold Capsule (AP 20) is still pretty reductive and flinty on the nose and needs a lot of aeration. Sweet and concentrated, with a fine botrytis and grapefruit flavor, this Riesling has tight structure, mouth-watering fruit and good acidity. There is also an endless flow of salts and stones. This is a very promising Auslese, whose structure and mineral expression give the wine an almost dry taste. This is great Riesling to be served no earlier than 2027.

  The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule), AP 17 18, is deep and flinty on the perfectly ripe, intense and tropical-scented nose with its ripe yellow nectarine and peach aromas. The wine exhibits very fine botrytis with crunchy-salty slate features on the palate and is racy-piquant, highly stimulating, crisp and crunchy on the finish, with lingering salinity. This 2017 Sonnenuhr is still very young and needs time to calm down but is still lush and fresh, and the bottle will be emptied before you have even thought about the wine. It's very long, complex and tensioned—just fabulous. Tasted in March 2019.

  The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is clear and bright on the nose, with ripe and intense but still discreet fruit aromas that intertwine perfectly with the slatey notes of the Sonnenuhr. On the palate, this is a mouth-filling, lush, creamy, salty-piquant, straight and pretty firm yet stimulating Kabinett with grip and tension on the finish. For now, I prefer the Graacher, but the Wehlener will surely develop and merit an even better score in a couple of years. Tasted in March 2019.

The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. 8% alcohol.

Very clear, elegant and strikingly piquant on the palate, this is a noble sweet wine with a highly precise fruit expression and a very mineral and still stringent finish. Bottled with 7.5% of alcohol this is an extremely fine, tightly woven and lovely salty Auslese that seriously rivals the auctioned Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese this year. (I tasted AP number #12 14.)

  The 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is impressively deep, dense and expressive on the nose that is more mineral rather than fruity. On the palate, this is a lush, tensioned, very precise, elegant, sharply defined and complex Riesling. It's not as exuberant as the Sonnenuhr can be, but it represents more of the gray/blue slate soil. The finish is really lush, perfectly concentrated and salty. This is a great Prüm icon Spätlese. Tasted in March 2019.

  Displaying a brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue, this Riesling is still looking very youthful. The nose tosses up lots of tertiary kerosene and toast aromatics underpinned by lime, faint honeyed citrus and spice. Fresh lime and citrus flavours infused with toasty characters fill the mouth over subtle honeyed nuances, light kero and spice. Dry finish with the acidity still very much on the crisp side. Long lime, citrus, honey, toast and spicy kero aftertaste. A wonderful example of aged Australian Riesling.

The dry palate keeps these vivid citrus notions but backs them with a riper backing track that suggests Mirabelle plum. The wine has elegance, sinuousness and a svelte but concentrated nature. Finishes dry with some pebble stone like elements and good fresh acidity. Fullish length with a long lime, ripe red apple, honeysuckle, subtle quince and pebble stone laced aftertaste.

  Brilliant very pale straw water like colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts. Pronounced lemon and lime scents are complexed by notions of oily toast, orange blossom and steely mineral notes. Crunchy lemon and lime fruits are delivered with terrific intensity over a back drop of orange blossom infusions, subtle steely kerosene like characters and flinty mineral elements.   It is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.

  The Abtserde vineyard sits immediately above the old monastery site in Westhofen, on pure limestone soils with light marl. It is regarded as one of the estate's most finely detailed sites, producing wines defined by precision and minerality, and is among Keller's most limited bottlings.

  From the Abtserde plot within the Brunnenhäuschen site in Westhofen, the 2023 Abts E Riesling GG is incredibly pure, deep and intense on the nose that is concentrated and chalky, with saline and lemony notes. Full-bodied, pure, fresh and saline on the palate, this is a highly complex and tight Riesling with a very intense, aromatic and structured finish. A great Riesling! Tasted as a sample in May this year. Drink 2025-2070.

  The 2023 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abtserde Grosses Gewächs is from a site between Kirchspiel and Morstein with the high active limestone. The shy nose teases with immensely pure but tender lemon peel notes, still interspersed with reduction. More air adds lemon balm. The palate is a picture of slenderness, brightness, freshness and limestone coolness. Underneath that is salt, stone and immense juiciness. Zestiness reigns, bringing length, depth and extra dimensions of citrus radiance. This is luminous and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

  This is mineral magic! Unbelievably concentrated, but also unbelievably elegant and refined on the medium-bodied palate, this defies easy description. As you swirl the glass the various aromatic dimensions of the wine—stone fruit, citrus, fresh herbs and chalk dust—reveal themselves one after another. Incredibly long, pure and stony at the mind-blowing finish. Drink from release.

  The tonal scale starts to rise here to a higher note than in Morstein but also showing more obvious smoky/mineral reduction. Ripe, pure and lightly spicy citrus, becoming ever more fragrant with air. A perfect contrast between crisp acidity and a rounded, deep fullness in the mouth, very different from the Rieslings grown on slate-dominated sites. Immense power, depth and length and an icy-cool finish cutting through all that depth. Drink 2027-2040.
