Moderate sulfur pushes the aromas of hazelnut and acacia blossom to the background at present. The rich, caressing and punchy flavors possess an appealing energy and brightness on the palate while exhibiting sneaky good length on the focused and linear finale where once again there is a trace of warmth. Drink 2025+.

In this low-yielding vintage, Pierre-Yves Colin opted to produce a 2019 Meursault Village, blending fruit from Narvaux (which he often bottles as a lieu-dit cuvée) with grapes from Grands Charrons and Vireuils. This is a fine hillside cuvée, mingling aromas of crisp orchard fruit, praline and lemon oil with hints of dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's bright and chalky, concluding with a long finish.

A blend of 60% Narvaux, 20% Vireuils and 20% Grands Charrons – enough to make 12 barrels of 350l. Pierre-Yves chooses when to pick (10th September at 14%). I like the nose a lot here and it is very Meursault. I pick up a nibble of toastiness at the back. Full of flesh, and finishes very well through you can tell that there is some alcohol.

An exuberantly fresh and expressive nose speaks of just sliced lemon, lime and passion fruit with hints of fennel and white peach. The beautifully textured, intense and overtly mineral-driven flavors possess fine mid-palate density while exhibiting outstanding persistence on the firm, balanced and built-to-age finale. While not especially austere at present, this wine makes clear that it's going to need at least some time in bottle first. Drink 2031+.

Always one of the highlights of the portfolio, Pierre-Yves Colin's 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets unwinds in the glass with scents of citrus zest, white flowers, blanched almonds, crisp green apple and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and concentrated, with tangy acids, chalky structuring extract, and a long, precise finish.

All lemon rather than lime in colour. A lovely classy nose, not showing too much ripeness, picked on 8th September at 14.2%. Softly ripe, but very pleasing, there is a thick layer of sweet ripe fruit, then a few grapefruit notes to keep the balance. Long and mouth-filling, with the requisite stony feel, but flesh takes the lead.

Smoky aromas feature those of tangerine peel, lemon-lime, passion fruit, cool apple and attractive spice nuances. There is impressive density to the focused and intense middle weight flavors that flash plenty of minerality on the sleek, detailed and similar youthfully austere finale. This is a bit different from how the Colin-Morey Baudines usually shows in that the 2019 version is notably bigger though at the expense of not quite the same finesse. Either way, it's impressive. Drink 2029+.

Exhibiting aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, buttery pastry, white flowers and toasted almonds, the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines is medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, with an elegantly textural attack that segues into an ample and enveloping core, underpinned by tangy acids. This is another success.

Purchased fruit, but picked by Pierre-Yves on the date of his choosing, 10th September at 14%. Lemon and lime colour, with a certain weight of fruit. Though noticeably ripe at first, a more chiselled aspect emerges behind and I rediscover the racy qualities of Baudines. Finishes really well.

Notes of matchstick character and petrol are present on the aromas of white flowers, poached pear and discreet spice wisps. There is both good volume and vibrancy to the medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This balanced effort needs to develop more depth, but it appears to have the necessary stuffing to do just that. Drink 2026+.

Aromas of pear, orange oil and mint, framed by a deft touch of oak, the 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an enveloping core of fruit, tangy acids and fine depth at the core. From a parcel located below Bâtard-Montrachet, this is always a very dependable bottling chez Colin, and this year is no exception.

Part comes from younger vines below, part from 85 year old vines above. Picked 8th September at 14.1%. Pale trim to the light yellow colour. A whisper of sulphur shows after the racking. A big step up here with extra layers of ripe fruit, which absolutely fill the mouth, then a gorgeous saline acidity, which complements very well. Not for nothing is Les Ancégnières an emblematic cuvée chez PYCM.

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes unwinds in the glass with scents of smoky pears and pear honey, framed by a subtle touch of reduction. Medium to full-bodied, round and fleshy, with a lively spine of acidity, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish.

From three plots on the Puligny side, in Les Houillères, the upper part of En Journoblot and Les Beuttes. Cheerful sunny nose, some spice too, then good fresh lemon scented fruit with more weight behind. Evenly balanced across the piece, albeit with less personality than the best of the St-Aubin 1ers crus.

Discreet wood influence sets off the layered aromas of various white-fleshed fruit that is nuanced by hints of citrus peel and quinine. The suave, round and agreeably textured medium weight flavors that possess a more refined mouthfeel if not the same power on the sappy, dry and youthfully austere finale. This balanced effort should drink well young and with mid-term cellaring. Drink 2027+.

Picked on 9th September, already at 14.4% alcohol. The colour has stayed very fresh, which is interesting. The nose does have some of the spice of ripe fruit, but the fruit is not denatured. The deep yellow fruit is bolstered by its own natural acidity and the vital touch of reduction. Very successful.

Three parcels, one 35-year-old close to Les Murgers des Dents de Chien. Others are at the same elevation as Chevalier with 60-year-old vines. Very sunny spot. Same exposition as La Chatenière. In the evening very exposed. Particularly calcareous with white soils. It can suffer in hot and, especially, dry summers. The vines shut down. Tank sample.
Not as expressive as the Champlots. Bit of chalkiness on the end but less expressive fruit at the moment. Low-key nose but long. Fruit and acid not yet integrated.

After leaving his family domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has established himself as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. Pierre-Yves has built a strong reputation for crafting exquisite white Burgundy that display energy and vitality. The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.

The 2019 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Hommage à Marguerite is also showing nicely, mingling hints of citrus zest and crisp green apple with notions of warm bread and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and elegantly textural, it's rich but controlled, with racy underlying acids and a long finish.

A blend of 1ers crus Combes, Créot and Perrières. There is a lighter green tint here, with very elegant, albeit ripe fruit, some pears, followed by tight lemon and lime citrus acidity. Fair balance

Blend of three parcels (Les Combes, ‘exotic’ En Créot and ‘mineral’ Les Perrières), all domaine fruit, and named after his grandmother, mother of his father, who died in 2016. Tank sample.
Almost fat! Lots of richness and impact. Real chiselled structure but there’s a whack of refined fruit here. Splashy impact!

The 2019 Saint-Aubin Le Banc is very promising, delivering aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers and wheat toast. Medium-bodied, bright and incisive, it's racy and precise, with fine depth at the core. Racked to tank not long before my visit for bottling early in the new year, I suspect it will fill out a little as it finishes its élevage. This is one of the easier-to-find wines in the range, and it represents a fine introduction to the house style—and the racy wines of Saint-Aubin.

A small yield of 30 hl/ha after frost, picked 13th September at 14%, but I did not see any trace of the alcohol when tasting this wine. Pale lime reflections in the colour. This wine begins beautifully with a fresh, chiselled nose, perfectly balanced with considerable energy. Alongside the admirable tension this wine is so full of fruit too, dancing across the palate. Highly Recommended.

Lieu-dit in which he owns three parcels. A terroir he’s known for 25 years and one that now produces fully ripe wines. 13.5% potential alcohol in 2019! There is lots of Pinot here. Near the Roux establishment. Faces directly south on quite a slope but fairly late ripening. Tank sample.
That combination of spice and tension again (after the Hautes-Côtes). Broad and appealing with a bit of pear fruit and lots of energy. This seems as though it may be broachable reasonably early.

Aromas of pear, white flowers and freshly baked bread introduce the 2019 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Au Bout du Monde, a medium-bodied, charming and incisive wine, its pretty core of fruit underpinned by tangy acids, concluding with chalky grip.

This wine comes from 6 year old vines, which were the last to be picked, by, which time sugar levels had risen. The 14% alcohol is not in fact all that evident behind the classic PYCM reductive note and the apples and pears on the palate are backed by higher acidity, which is a good thing here.

From Cormot – ‘the end of the world’ with cliffs and a waterfall – ‘wonderful for walks’. Chardonnay and a little bit of Aligoté. PYCM has had this since 2015. Tank sample.
More lifted than the Bourgogne and tighter. Limestone and still very taut. More lemon than grapefruit. Marked acidity and different from most of the PYCM family.

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnières—which, like the higher appellations, had been racked and returned to barrel when I tasted it—is showing very well, wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, fresh peach, nutmeg and mandarin oil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with good depth and weight at the core, tangy balancing acids and a mouthwatering finish. It's an attractively complete Chassagne from a parcel Colin owns that's located below Bâtard-Montrachet.

Inviting yellow-green color. Fully ripe aromas of peach syrup, lemon drop and white pepper. Quite concentrated, thick and rich, with its flavors of grapefruit pith and lemon zest lifted by a subtle spicy quality. Boasts an edge-free texture like liquid satin and yet there's no impression of undue weight. Finishing with echoing length, this should make a superb village wine. Incidentally, this wine and the following samples are aging entirely in 350-liter barrels, except for the Meursault Les Genevrières and Chevalier-Montrachet, of which Colin has just a single 228-liter barrique.

Fine pure clear colour. The nose is a little sturdier than the St-Aubins, with little reduction apparent. Yes, in fact there is some lurking behind. White fruit with very good weight, greater density than the St-Aubins, altogether very successful for village level Chassagne, albeit from a top site.

Vines 85 years old. Deep soils just below Bâtard. Racked and back to barrel in August. Will spend several months in tank before bottling in May.
Delicate nose, almost a touch of blossom here. Lemon cream, refined. Extreme tension, just softened by the texture. Less intensity than the En Remilly but equally great length. Fine, pure tight electric finish. Very very tight and needs time to relax.

Strong sulfur pushes the underlying fruit to the background at present. Otherwise there is a beguiling sense of underlying tension to the more mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a lovely texture before terminating in a finely detailed, decidedly firm and youthfully austere finish. This almost delicate effort obviously needs to clean up the nose and to develop more depth to merit the upper end of my predicted range but I very much like the apparent potential.

One of the more reserved wines in the range, the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines unwinds in the glass with aromas of white flowers, almond paste, green apple and Meyer lemon. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny textured and deep at the core, with a blocky, somewhat rustic profile underpinned by incisive acids. This bottling is produced from purchased fruit.

Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Captivating high-pitched perfume of white peach, anise, fresh herbs, mint, white pepper and crushed stone. Penetrating fruit flavors of lemon drop, peach and apple are complicated by salty and gingery nuances. Not a thick style but shows plenty of texture and intensity and finishes with subtle, rising perfume. Colin typically seeks to pick these vines "a bit later, with better ripeness," but this wine nonetheless conveys a light touch.

Here too the fruit cannot compete with the strong level of sulfur influence. There is better volume and richness if not the same refinement to the attractively textured, lilting and stony flavors that deliver better depth on the equally persistent finish where a touch of wood surfaces. Lovely stuff with very fine development potential.

From one of Pierre-Yves Colin's finest domaine holdings, the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets offers up aromas of noisette, white flowers, beeswax, Anjou pear and crushed chalk. On the medium to full-bodied palate, the wine is quite closed but extremely promising, revealing a deep, concentrated core framed by tangy acids and chalky dry extract, concluding with a long, penetrating finish.

Bright medium yellow-green. Alluring scents of lemon drop, caraway seed, pungent crushed rock and spices. Wonderfully fine-grained and slightly glyceral, with its flavors of lemon zest, anise and crushed rock conveying terrific mineral-driven definition and purity. Turns more austere on the very long, slowly mounting, white-peppery whiplash of a finish. A potentially great, elegant example of an outstanding terroir. Colin has three 350-liter barrels of this juice, one of them new--or about 42 hectoliters per hectare. He told me that this wine "was nothing at the beginning: both oxidized and reduced at the same time."

Lively primrose colour, a little touch of stony reduction. This has a wonderful intensity of fruit which starts very early, swells through the middle, and finishes with a delightful sense of stones at the back. Long and lovely.

One new barrel out of three, as Chenevottes. Vines from his father. Extreme west of the premier cru and high up. Racked and back to barrel in August. Will spend several months in tank before bottling in May.
Firmly textured, a hint of struck match on the palate. A light and inviting note of smoky reduction – typical of this premier cru – likely to reduce in barrel. Deep green fruits with richness and volume in the mouth but tightened up by that mineral smokiness and just a hint of sweet toast. Comes in tight and incredibly long on the finish. Goes on for ever. Complete wine.

A slightly riper nose features notes of exotic white and yellow orchard fruit, resin and a whisper of rosemary oil. The sleek and delicious flavors are rich but not quite as dense as those of the Chenevottes though they do possess an attractive texture while delivering fine length on the refreshing, citrusy and notably dry finale.

Spicy, creamy depth here, a pure chalky citrus nose and a hint of clementine. On the palate a richness and fulness in the mouth though the acidity cuts through the middle like a knife. So juicy and tense and excitable. Long, precise, clean-cut after the openness of the nose. Incredibly fresh but balanced. Perhaps just a little more austere on the palate than I expected.

Once again there is a whiff of exoticism to the mostly floral and white peach scented nose. The supple and relatively easy-going flavors possess a seductive texture while coating the palate with sappy dry extract that contrasts with the citrusy finish that tightens up considerably as it sits on the palate. This will need to develop more depth to merit the upper end of my projected range.

Super-creamy and leesy on the nose. Gorgeous lemon and lime and just a hint of toast but not oaky. Perfectly seasoned. Power and richness on the palate but no fat. Lithe rather than lean, and so persistent. Smoky in the empty glass. Salivating. Very long.

First to be picked from their plot close to the excellent 1er Cru, Vide Bourse. Pale primrose, but the nose is hard to tease out. It is on the palate that the wine comes into its own, with more fruit than expected at all parts of the compass. Fair length too, graceful, attractive.

This all comes from the lieu-dit of Le Trezin located high on the slope giving a very mineral cooler style of wine. In 2017 they forgot to lodge the papers with the appellation authorities in time so this is just labelled Puligny village without recognising the lieu-dit name this vintage. Racy and finely textured this shows bright citric fruit and excellent length and vigour. Excellent.

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising.

Blend of three parcels (En Créot, Les Combes and Perrières in equal parts) that were not complex enough on their own. Named after his grandmother, who died in 2016 at the time of the frost. Co-fermented. Tank sample.
Bright limey citrus with a hint of oak spice. But that flinty note too. Tightly coiled. Really juicy and mouth-watering to give an intense balance of fruit and acidity. Intense and creamy but with no fat at all.

A softly exotic nose features notes of jasmine tea, citrus blossom and a noticeable application of oak. There is good richness allied with a lovely sense of underlying energy suffusing the refined and mineral-driven flavors that deliver fine persistence. This should be approachable young but also reward 3 to perhaps 6 years of cellaring.

A restrained, and notably floral nose combines notes of apple, citrus zest and a wisp of mineral reduction. The palate impression of the middle weight flavors is relatively precise and especially so in the context of what is typical for the 2018 vintage while offering evident minerality and salinity on the balanced bitter lemon-inflected finish. This will need to add depth to achieve the upper end of my predicted range, but it may well do just that.

Intense citrus and a touch of clementine but lightly smoky reduction too. Power. So intense and streamlined, with just a light smokiness. The fruit is like a streak but goes on for ever, not to be tamed by the oak. Eye-watering freshness to balance that depth of fruit.

Pale lemon colour. The nose is showing some coconut oak and is noticeably fully than the others. Really very rich on the palate, not dancing lightly on its feet but offering the massive chardonnay style of Les Charmes. Some tannins too. Meursault’s Morgeot?

An airy and elegant nose reflects notes of cool white flowers, spiced tea and apple compote that is trimmed in a hint of citrus confit. The racy, refined and beautifully detailed medium weight flavors brim with minerality on the balanced and sneaky long finish. This is a really pretty wine with excellent material stretched over a firm acid spine that should enable this to age gracefully over a decade plus.

Slightly honeyed citrus aroma even a touch of green fig. Intense streak of pure citrus on the palate. Direct and driving across the palate. Almost sour in its citrus character but perfectly balanced with the depth of the fruit. Long, long. Lovely touch of toast at the very end.

Pale primrose colour. The nose promises a weight of ripe fruit but does not yet deliver detail. Some oak which it merits. Then a huge burst of intense fruit behind, again coated in oak, one new 350 litre barrel in three. Pierre-Yves notes that for him this vineyard is always more backward, coming from the top part towards Grandes Ruchottes, very cool and close to the limestone. It starts slim and ages well. Certainly very promising.

Soft whispers of matchstick and smoke add a bit of breadth to the ripe white-fleshed fruit aromas that are trimmed in a deft application of wood. The delicious and nicely vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess both a finer texture as well as slightly better precision if not quite the same richness, all wrapped in a bitter lemon-suffused finish. I like the balance and generosity, and this should age effortlessly.

Deliciously creamy aroma with a light spice and clementine notes. But chalky too. Intense and quite open. Super-intense bright, ripe lemon, with just a hint of charry reduction on the aftertaste. Great purity of fruit that holds its head above the oak but the oak contributes to the texture and fabulous length.

Here the nose is quite firmly reduced and essentially unreadable today. More interesting are the highly energetic and intensely stony ultra-refined flavors that exhibit excellent persistence on the focused and balanced finale. This classy effort is a wine of finesse and should drink reasonably well young but reward up to a decade of cellaring. In short, this is really lovely juice.

More mealy and leesy on the nose compared with the Chenevottes. A wine I would like to fall into. Power and drive here, with less flesh on the palate than the creamy nose predicted, a little more severe on the palate, the acidity very crisp and the fruit weight only just up to it. But should age well. Amazing length.

From 4 very old vineyards all located on the northern side of Chassagne close to the Puligny border. Lifted citric aromas and bright acidity on the palate giving excellent length. Fine and discrete at this early stage it certainly looks more structured and closer to Puligny in style. Very promising.

Aromas of white flowers, orange blossom, citrus oil and green apple introduce the 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chatenière, a medium-bodied, stony but giving wine with succulent acids, a crisp core of fruit and good length on the finish. It's a successful wine from a parcel of old vines that Colin owns.

(from two parcels of 50-year-old vines): Bright, light yellow with green highlights. Reticent nose shows a green apple note and a hint of oxidation, as the malolactic fermentation only finished a couple weeks before my visit. Thick, sappy and dry, with a glyceral solidity leavened by almost painful acidity. This deep but youthfully disjointed wine is a shock to the palate today. With its oily texture and notes of resiny wild herbs, this wine conveys a strong place character. Colin describes La Chatenière as "the oldest place for Chardonnay in Saint-Aubin and a great terroir," noting that his parcels face southwest and are protected from wind. The crop level here was 48 hectoliters per hectare in 2017. This wine needs a racking and is evolving slowly.

Tank sample. 55-year-old vines. One of the first sectors of St-Aubin to be planted with Chardonnay instead of Pinot. This is unusual in St-Aubin because it is steep and south-west facing, very calcareous and has very little wind. Will be bottled next week. Used to have to bottle sooner because they needed the place in the cellar. Three months in tank and taking time means you don’t have to filter.
Intense, ripe citrus and grapefruit nose. Super-rich in the mouth, so generous but also so tense and fresh. The balance and intensity in these limpid wine is truly wonderful. A touch of mealy spice on the finish hides just how taut and fresh it is. Builds in the mouth to complex intensity. Eat your heart out Chassagne.

In the frost-ravaged 2016 vintage, many Saint-Aubin producers opted to blend premiers crus that they ordinarily bottle separately, and that's the case with Pierre-Yves Colin's 2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Cuvée Marguerite, a blend of the lieux-dits En Créot, Les Combes and Perrières. The combination is very successful, offering up a classy bouquet of peach pit, green orchard fruit, toasted hazelnuts and a light framing of reduction. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, deep and chewy, with a glossy attack and a deep core. Structurally firm, even somewhat rustic, it's a cuvée to forget for several years in the cellar.

The 2016 Saint-Aubin Cuvée Marguerite from Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is a multi-vineyard blend after frost devastated his vines. This is delicious, quite aromatic on the nose with hints of wild honey, almost like a 2015, touches of peaches and cream after 20 minutes aeration. The palate is harmonious and generous with a fine bead of acidity, hints of almond and traces of vanilla on the finish. There is nothing cerebral here, but it is very delicious. Tasted from a bottle bought on release and tasted at “Brat” restaurant in London.

From Cormot, 8 km (5 miles) from Chassagne, a cool site at 400 m (1,300 ft), sloping and west facing (also from St-Aubin and Pernand). Calcareous with a little bit of clay – more clay than in St-Romain. 2 ha (5 acres) bought in 2014, and 2018 was the first year they kept all the fruit – it took four years to get the vines as they wanted them. In tank since August and will be bottled in December.

The 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots displays notes of nutmeg, sweet confit lemon, citrus zest and praline. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and pure with a fleshy attack that gives way to a more tensile, saline mid-palate and finish.

Bright pale yellow. Rather Chassagne-like aromas of pear, menthol, white flowers and white pepper. Fatter than the Hommage à Marguerite but without quite the cut of that wine. A bit more aggressive in spite of possessing good buffering material, with lemon and dusty stone flavors coming across as adamantly dry in the early going. (one-third each Les Combes, en Créot and Les Perrières, all harvested after the rain; aging entirely in 350-liter barrels, 25% new): Perfumed, precise aromas and flavors of white peach, flowers and crushed stone. The palate offers lovely concentration and spice character as well as a light touch, with harmonious lemony acidity contributing to the impression of inner-mouth perfume. This very nicely balanced wine finishes with good length and grip. Colin first made this blend in 2016 owing to the tiny quantities of fruit produced by these three parcels, naming the wine after his paternal grandmother, who died a few days before the frost of 2016. As he found the blend to be more than the sum of its parts, he decided to continue producing it in subsequent vintages.
