Deep and complex with plenty of smoke and hot, dry-stone character. The mineral energy of this wine is enormous and there isn't a hint of opulence to stand in its way. Super-long and firm finish. This is as original as it gets. Try in 2019.

Fritz's Riesling grows in a very small and special part of Rheinhessen called the Roter Hang, a name meaning “red hill“ due to its red-slate soils. The combination of the red slate soil, its proximity to the Rhine river, exposure to the sun and the steepness of the vineyards are perfect for producing wines with wonderful ripeness.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge to the edges and a watery hue. Lifted lime and ripe red apple scents mix with orange blossom, a faint whiff of honeysuckle, citrus and light mineral. Showing good intensity, the palate has a generous mouthfeel with ripe lime and red apple flavours dominate over subtle mandarin, citrus and mineral characters. Finishes dry with fresh snappy acidity and a long aftertaste.

Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable today. More revealing are the rich, generous and full-bodied flavors that possess outstanding intensity along with ample minerality on the impressively long, very dry and lingering finale that is shaped by green apple-inflected acidity. Here the nose is ripe to the point of exhibiting discreet exotic fruit that include peach, passion fruit and discreet floral nuances that include a whiff of gardenia. The round and seductively textured middle weight flavors possess more evident minerality on the slightly tangy and warm finale. Drink 2026+.

The plot was bought with the house. It is on a steep slope straight on the rocks: every few years they have to take eroded soil back up to the top. Pure deep lemon colour. Some intensity on the nose but not yet the detail. Some herbal notes though of course not suggesting under-ripeness. This is really lovely on the palate, sunny but not hot. The ripe lemon notes come back out but with real elegance here, and a perfect balance. Delicious wine.

Certified organic. Bright straw colour with a pale straw hue. Herbaceous green bean and grassy top notes intermix with green capsicum, lees characters and pencil shavings to form a nose very much in the green spectrum. Sourced from a collection of small vineyards located throughout the Russian River sub region this richly flavoured Chardonnay sees fermentation in French oak barrels (28% new) followed by 10 months maturation with weekly lees stirring through malo-latic fermentation.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with a distinct glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Heady ripe peach, honeycomb and crème brulee like scents engulf the olfactory senses with notions of lemon butter, roasted almonds and spice also present. Rich and opulent the palate is awash with fleshy yellow peach, crème brulee and honeycomb flavours. Toasty oak, nougat, almond and spice characters linger in the background. The 2020 Chardonnay Russian River Valley was barrel fermented and matured 10 months in 28% new oak. The 2019 Les Hauts de Smith Blanc begins a little closed on the nose, soon unfurling to reveal fragrant scents of lime blossoms, lemongrass and shaved ginger with a core of yuzu, fresh apple slices and kumquat plus a waft of dill seed. The 2019 Les Hauts de Smith Blanc has a little more amplitude on the nose than I expected, quite intense scents of red apple, pear, melon and light waxy aromas, as if there had been a touch of Sémillon in the blend. This is also aromatically cool and decidedly restrained with its array of green apple, mineral reduction, citrus zest and a vaguely Chablis-like hint of oyster shell and iodine. The beautifully textured broad-shouldered flavors flash both focused power and an abundance of minerality on the tension-filled, bone-dry and balanced finale. Taut and structured, the 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru delivers aromas of citrus zest, freshly baked bread and white flowers, followed by a full-bodied, satiny palate that's chalky and incisive, concluding with a penetrating finish. This cuvée is acquired in grapes and pressed by Boillot.

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is another stellar white from Boillot. All citrus, white pepper and crushed rocks, the Charlemagne sizzles with energy. There’s terrific focus here and plenty of cut too. This vibrant, airy Charlemagne hits all the right notes. It is a fine effort in this challenging vintage. To deal with the tiny volume in 2021, Guillaume Boillot had a 228-liter barrel made with 50% new oak staves and 50% staves from a once-used barrel. Drink 2024-2031.

In 2021 the Boillot Corton-Charlemagne is all from Aloxe and not the three communes. Mid lemon yellow. The nose has some style, flesh and floral and potentially stony. Cool, airy and very pretty aromas of the essence of pear, exotic tea, spice and acacia blossom are trimmed in an admirably discreet touch of oak. Boillot waited until 29 September to pick the 2021 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère, producing a mere 18 barrels. Unfurling in the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts, spices and beeswax, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a chiseled, concentrated profile and a long, saline finish.

Guillaume has pulled out the youngest vines, for rootstock reasons. Most of the old vines fortunately are on 3309C. But badly frosted, below 10 hl/ha. A little more yellow in the colour, a riper fruit, which then comes back to its roots on the palate. Sappy, Guillaume says, while there is a generosity in the mouth which has completely retained its balance. Very persistent. Drink from 2026-2032.

A slightly riper though almost as elegant nose combines notes of petrol and citrus with those of acacia, mineral reduction and crushed fennel. There is more volume and richness to the less prominently stony flavors that possess a highly seductive mouthfeel, all wrapped in a superbly long finish. This is actually quite aromatically similar to the Bourgogne save for displaying notably more floral elements. Subtle notes of mineral reduction and wood toast can be found on the aromas of green apple, clove and white flowers. The wonderfully intense, focused and muscular large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost aggressively minerality on the markedly dry but not really austere finale. This beauty is so tightly wound that I would strongly advise to not even touch a bottle for at least 5 years. Drink through 2030+.

Fine pale lemon colour. Little green tints. The stones bound forth on the nose, much more chiselled than the Genevrières for example. Really intense, all about the tension, a long flowing finish on very pure white fruit, at the perfect pitch of ripeness. Brilliantly done. A clear 5 stars!

This is also quite smoky with its aromas of green fruit, lemon-lime and herbal tea. There is notably better size, weight and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that buffers the firm acid spine supporting the clean, dry and seriously long finale. This robust effort will need at least 4 to 5 years of patience. Drink through 2028+.

A fine cleans primrose colour. The fruit is attractively ripe without being heavy, a little yellow plum in the mix, which certainly fleshes out the middle, a touch of quince, some bitter orange rind, then a firmer finish. Quite backward at this stage.

All domaine fruit. Pale colour and a light nose. But fine, balanced and picked at the right time. Starts discreetly and builds very well, to offer significant volume at the back. Almost too fleshy but holds together nicely with a little ripe citrus to finish.

Mostly made from their own grapes from Luraules, Petit Charrons, Pelles Dessus along with grapes they harvest from En La Barre and Clos du Cromin. The new wood level has been reduced to 15-20%. More lemon than lime in colour, quite a plump nose though fruit detail awaits. Builds very nicely on the palate, some ripe greengage notes, very good fresh finish with a balance between the flesh and the acidity. Recognisably Meursault.

Here too the nose is quasi-Chablis like with similar nuances of iodine, mineral reduction and oyster shell along with a variety of citrus influences. The sleek and almost painfully intense broad-shouldered flavors flash plenty of minerality on the dense, muscular and bone-dry finale that leaves zero doubt that this will need extended patience if you're to see it at its peak. Hervé Souhaut is one of a kind, producing some of the most lithe, perfumed, and exuberant wines from the Rhone. He and his wife converted the cellars of her parents' centuries-old hunting lodge into the winery and now draw on four parcels of vines totaling 8.5 acres in Saint Joseph, as well as 20 additional acres of Vin de Pays vineyards on the plateau, planted primarily to Gamay, Roussanne and Viognier. The AOC wines are labeled under Souhaut's name, while the Vin de Pays cuvées are named Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet, in homage to the name of her parents' estate combined with Béatrice's family name.

The methods of Jules Chauvet are followed here, which is to say grapes are hand-harvested and then the whole bunches undergo a pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature. Fermentation follows using natural yeasts in wooden and concrete tanks – the wine is then aged on fine lees in seasoned oak casks for eight to twelve months. Following that there is just a teeny dose of sulfur at bottling, which is done without filtration.

The rare Romaneaux-Destezet Blanc is produced from 90% Roussanne 10% Viognier. Light gold in the glass with lovely scents of white flowers, tropical fruit, wet stones and subtle notes of seasoned oak. The palate is supple but fresh with loads of pear and spiced apricot flavours that are backed by elegant mineral notes. Fine and crisp acidity, pear preserve and a gentle warmth lingers on the finish.
