- 2019 Caroline Morey Chassagne Montrachet Les Caillerets Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenClosure: Cork
Caroline Morey comes from a long line of vignerons based in the Cotes de Beaune and is also married to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In 2014 Caroline took her share of some family vineyards from her father Jean-Marc and created her own domaine based in Chassagne-Montrachet, working out of brand new cellars built for Caroline and her husband.
For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

Once again there is plenty of citrus influence on the layered aromas of spiced pear, apple, white peach and just sliced fennel. The more refined and slightly more voluminous flavors possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension as well as an abundance of minerality on the lingering and balanced finale that isn't quite as dry or youthfully austere. Good stuff and worth considering. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe first to be picked and still 14.1%, though as this note demonstrates, this Caillerets can easily handle that degree of ripeness. There is more green in the colour blend this time. This starts discreetly, then builds brilliantly on the palate, the acidity is really well integrated, seamless and vibrant. Really delicious graceful wine with a light cream touch at the finish.

Once again there is enough sulfur to overshadow the underlying fruit that clearly seems ripe. There is very good density to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that flash focused power on the bone-dry finish that is shaped by lemon-tinged acidity. There is a hint of warmth but it's sufficiently subtle to materially impair the balance. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOld vines, a few from the 1930s and the rest 1960s. Glowing pale lemon and lime. The nose is quite reticent with a touch of reduction. There’s good depth here, with an agreeable energy though lighter acid. The flesh starts to build at the back of the palate.

A deft application of wood sets off the ripe and appealingly spicy nose that displays mostly white peach and hints of orange peel. The sleek, delicious and well-detailed middle weight flavors are caressing but punchy on the very dry and youthfully austere finale. This should benefit from a few years of keeping to unwind and ultimately reward 6 to 10 years. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe wine has fallen clear so the weight of fruit and alcohol shows more. This is very substantial, almost too fleshy, though happily with the usual good acidity. Younger vines may have suffered a bit more.

Hints of matchstick and petrol add a bit of breadth to the pretty aromas of essence of pear, apple and soft lemon rind nuances. The supple, round and delicious flavors possess fine intensity on the dry and clean finish. This could use better depth, but it may well develop it if allowed a few years of keeping first. Part of this classic red wine vineyard was replanted to white in 1999. Light lime touch. Toasty, actually this is an interesting bouquet even though I am against chardonnay in this vineyard. Thick ripe texture with some smoke. First to be picked and even so leading to a generous fleshy finish, with relatively low acidity.

Once again sulfur overshadows the fruit rendering the nose impossible to assess. By contrast there is good freshness to the finer if slightly less concentrated flavors that possess a refined texture along with plenty of minerality on the sneaky long and austere finale. This too should repay extended keeping as it will almost certainly add body and depth with time in bottle.

Aged in French oak (40% new) for a period of 14 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense white peach and ripe pear aromas carry a distinct dried honey overlay with notes of citrus, green apple, nougat, faint cashew, slate and mineral ensuing. Rich, expansive and powerful but not heavy this wine possesses a Grand Cru Chablis like character. Concentrated white peach and pear fruits combine with dried honey, subtle cashew and nougat over a wet slate and oyster shell back drop. Exceptional length with vibrant acidity lending an energetic feel to the very long, refined and mineral infused conclusion.

Matured in two French puncheons (one new) and three French barriques. It has a complex, faintly funky, bouquet ex 100% mlf (essential to reduce acidity) and repeated lees stirring. Despite this, it is remarkably fine and tight, possibly protected with all movements in the cellar by gravity. These are high spirited wines, and need a gentle hand to calm them. Drink by 2033.

One of my favorite vintages for this cuvee, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc never fails to impress. Revealing a medium-gold color, it has gorgeous richness and depth in its honeyed stone fruits, peach, buttered-citrus and salty minerality. Voluptuous, full-bodied and decadently textured, it has both freshness and focus, both of which come through on the finish. I'd drink bottles over the coming 2-3 years, or hold off for a decade.

The Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2014 has a pretty nose in the making: precise apple blossom and blackcurrant leaf aromas that gently waft from the glass. The palate is crisp on the entry, the acidity not as shrill as some of its peers, thus rendering it a more "languid" Pessac-Léognan. There is already a very elegant, gravelly finish that lingers in the mouth-a very promising Carbonnieux Blanc that may merit a higher score after bottling. Drink 2018 - 2032.

They always major on precision aromatics at this château, can really feel those knife-edge freshly sliced citrus flavours, touches of lime blossom, clean and fresh. A touch lean in the mid palate again, seems a characteristic of the vintage, 12.8%abv, 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon, ph3.25. From a zippy blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sauvignon Gris. Expect technical, precision winemaking from this property, which in 2014 included skin maceration to naturally lower the acidity. Consultant here is Valérie Lavigne, who works alongside Denis Dubourdieu at the ISVV and is a specialist in white wines - so great care is taken to work on the aromatics of the grapes, from a cold soak at 5°C to ensure aromas are extracted without bitterness, and restrained use of 20% new oak, that is used alongside 60% stainless steel and 20% large wooden vats - all to avoid damaging the citrus, cut grass and stone fruit aromas of the Sauvignon. Certainly there is great potential on display here with fresh acidity but clean fruit definition and an attractive mid-palate weight. As with the reds, great potential at this property.

Aline Baly kindly furnished me with background information on the 2020 Coutet. "The first sorting occurred on September 16 and 17 to harvest the botrytis resulting from the thunderstorms of August 15," she told me. "The second and third passeage were organized quickly, as the climatic conditions were becoming unfavorable. The teams were ready to harvest within the hour, as soon as a weather window emerged. This second phase of harvest finally took place on September 23 before a thunderstorm that resulted in a cumulative rainfall of 38mm. Then the harvest continued September 29 and 30 before 77mm of precipitation. A new passeage was initiated, initially, on October 8 and 9, but 140mm of rain accumulated since the first sort strongly impacted concentration levels, encouraging us to be patient until October 12. We resumed the harvest under normal conditions until October 22 but with a very capricious forecast. A fifth and sixth sort followed one another, and the harvest ended on October 26.” Coutet has a very perfumed and more floral bouquet compared to, say, the de Fargues that happens to precede it, aromas of dandelion and apricot mingling with saffron and light chamomile. The palate is well balanced, very pure and lightly spiced, displaying a tang of marmalade and quince toward a finish that is marked by Coutet’s trademark acidic bite. Quintessentially Coutet, this should give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure.

The pale lemon-gold colored 2019 Coutet is a thrill ride from the get-go, exploding from the glass with fantastically intense scents of tangerine peel, lime blossoms and lemon marmalade over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, candied ginger, ripe apricots and clover honey plus suggestions of chanterelles and musk perfume. The palate is equally electric and exhilarating, prancing around the palate with a whole myriad of candied citrus, stone fruit and citrus flavors, charged by a racy backbone of acidity, finishing beautifully textured and with an epically long firework display of minerals. Apart from all that, it is pretty darn delicious.

Wine EnthusiastThe 2017 Coutet, which was tasted both as a final blend and directly from several different lots in barrel, has a very well defined bouquet with pure wild honey and orange blossom aromas that gain intensity with aeration. Containing 135 grams per liter of residual sugar, the pale lemon-gold colored 2016 d'Yquem leaps from the glass with honeyed apricots, pineapple, green mango, crushed rocks, candied ginger, coriander seed and citrus peel with hints of orange blossom. The palate is very tightly wound, vibrant and refreshing with layer upon layer of minerals and spices, finishing with epic poise and persistence.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (March 2019)A very classic Yquem. Breathtakingly wide spectrum of floral honey, exotic fruit (passion fruit, mango and pineapple), caramel and marzipan aromas. But none of this is a jot too much. In fact, the wine is extremely precise and finely nuanced. Wonderful freshness and textural complexity, in spite of the considerable concentration and extravagance. Very suave and sensual finish that goes on and on. Drink or hold.

James Suckling (Jan 2019)The 2016 Chateau D’Yquem is pure magic and dessert wines don’t get much better. Offering a pale gold color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of honeyed tangerines, tart apricots, liquid rocks, white flowers, and honeysuckle, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an opulent texture, vibrant acidity, and again, an incredible sense of minerality, despite having no shortage of sweetness or richness. The 2016 is a classic blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon that hit 14.2% alcohol with 135 grams of residual sugar. It’s already complex and approachable yet will keep for 3-4 decades.

The pale to medium lemon-gold colored 2005 d'Yquem opens with a provocative, mineral and earth-tinged nose of chalk dust, wet pebbles and dried wild mushrooms over a core of warm apricots, green mango, honeyed toast, ginger and pink grapefruit plus wafts of honeycomb, orange blossoms and saffron. The palate confirms the wine is still a little closed and shut down, offering achingly gorgeous glimpses at the tightly wound, intricate layers structured with a racy acid line and wonderfully creamy texture, finishing incredibly long and perfumed. This decadent flavor bomb still needs a good five to seven years in bottle before it is set to go off, but oh what a spectacle it will give then!

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)What an incredible nose of flowers, honey, spices such as clove, and sandalwood. With time, decadent aromas of apple tart and crumble develop. Full and very round on the palate, this is medium sweet with a velvety texture. Flavors of honey, apple and pear tart appear on the long finish. This is so beautiful, hard not to drink now but will greatly improve with more time. 140 grams of RS.

James Molesworth - Wine SpectatorButtery, lush, sweet, ripe and overripe pineapple, apricot and orange rind coated with honey and vanilla beans are found on the nose and palate. Rich, full-bodied, luscious and sweet, the blazing jolt of acidity keeps the wine up and the taster interested. Like all vintages of Yquem, the wine takes several decades to achieve full maturity. And also like all the best vintages of d'Yquem, it's just delicious to enjoy in its youth.

I have had the very good fortune to taste the 2001 d'Yquem perhaps a dozen times since its release and have never been less than absolutely floored by its combination of poise, purity, precision and layer upon intricate, jaw-dropping layer of flavor nuances. It is among a very small clutch of incredible wines that crash through the 100-point ceiling and rocket beyond the stratosphere! A testament to that magic that can be created when an uncommonly great vintage for Sauternes brings out the best of an extraordinary vineyard and is skillfully, sensitively crafted, the 2001 is a true wine rarity that must be tried to be believed.
Pale to medium lemon-gold, the nose is simply WOW—an absolute show-stopper, delivering vibrant, youthful lime cordial, pink grapefruit and lemon meringue pie scents followed up by suggestions of chamomile tea, saffron, cassis and nutmeg plus wafts of marzipan, crushed rocks and beeswax. The palate is beyond-belief intense, offering a myriad of decadent citrus fruit preserves and earthy/mineral-inspired nuances, instilling incredible depth, all punctuated by profound freshness and finishing epically long and exquisitely delicious. The alcohol this vintage is 13.6%, while the residual sugar is a whopping 150 grams per liter, beautifully balanced by a total acidity of 4.5 grams per liter of H2SO4. Obviously, the longer readers are willing to cellar this, the more they will get of that ethereal tertiary complexity/experience. This said, for those who love great Sauternes in its youthful/primary flushes, even at this very early stage in its evolution, the multifaceted 2001 d'Yquem will not disappoint.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)What a pure wine, with honey, caramel, cooked apple, bon bon, and pear tart. Dried apricots and peaches develop with time in the glass. The 2018 d'Yquem is all lime cordial, grapefruit oil and mandarin peel to begin. With a little coaxing, the fireworks really begin, letting off a whole array of honeysuckle, candied ginger, dried pineapple, lemon pastilles, chalk dust and sea spray scents, followed by a savory undercurrent of shaved almonds, allspice and baking bread. The palate is an exercise in polish and poise, featuring the most gorgeously creamy texture and bright, sparkling freshness, framing all the densely laden tropical and citrus fruit layers, finishing with a powerful BANG of profound floral and spice perfume. It is wonderfully sweet, yes, but that—paradoxically for a "sweet wine"—is almost beside the point.

James SucklingAverage temperatures 2.7°C over average, combined with 20% of the normal rainfall from mid August to the end of July made makes this a naturally rich, lowyielding vintage (40% less than average, not helped by a hail storm in July), with a gloriously gourmet 145g/ha residual sugar, and a pH level of 3.95. As ever with Yquem, patience was the key, taking in the grapes slowly but surely over 17 days harvest that extended well into October. The results in the glass are intense and glossy, full of satin-textured apricot and white peach flavours. There are exotic fruits of pineapple and mango but winemaker Sandrine Garbay has kept a focus on fresher flavours of lime zest and citrus that balance out the natural richness and concentration. Pretty closed right now, but there is power and balance here, an excellent Yquem. Drinking Window 2022 - 2050.

2019 Y (Ygrec) d'Yquem Pre-Arrival OfferSauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenClosure: CorkY d'Yquem (Ygrec) is the rare, dry wine from Chateau d'Yquem. Historically Y was made in the years when the season didn't allow for sufficient accumulation of botrytis, but since 2004 the decision was made to make the wine each vintage. Differing from the sweet wine, Y is composed of predominantly Sauvignon Blanc (75%) with the balance Semillon, harvested early in the season, before being matured in barrel (one third new) for approximately ten months. The 2019 wine was harvested relatively early after a wet spring and hot summer accelerated growth, but the team were able to pick perfectly healthy grapes that balanced richness and freshness.

2017 Chateau d'Yquem (375ml)Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkThe early part of winter was cold and very dry. Warmer temperatures and rain returned in February and the weather in March led to a quick start to vegetative growth. The most significant event of spring 2017 occurred in late April when frost struck to a degree that had not been seen since 1991. Miraculously, temperatures did not go below the freezing point at Château d'Yquem so the vines were spared an impact.
To add insult to injury, the summer of 2017 was the 4th hottest since 1897 which meant the growing season was a good month ahead of average, an advance that reached a peak on about the 20th of June. This meant records were broken again when picking began earlier than ever before, on the 16th of August, and both grape varieties managed to uniformly ripen in late August and in perfect condition.
In summary, 2017 was a brilliant year with total botrytis and tremendous concentration that called for very specific sorting techniques to stay within the parameters defined by Chateau Yquem.2017 is a very great success, worthy of the finest vintages ending in "7".

There was no frost at d’Yquem in 2017, and botrytis was very regular and even this vintage. The nose opens with very pure notes of freshly sliced oranges, yuzu and lemon barley water with hints of white pepper, fresh ginger and lime cordial. The incredibly rich, unctuous sweetness (148 grams per liter of residual sugar) is beautifully marbled with bright, vivacious citrus fruit and spice flavors, while lifted by well-knit freshness, and it finishes with epic length and great depth.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine AdvocateThe 2017 Yquem, which was not affected by frost, was picked in two tries from 26 to 29 September and 5 to 10 October. There is 148gm/L residual sugar and a 3.8 pH, alcohol coming in at 13.9°. The early September rain prompted homogenous pourriture noble and this was followed by a warm period that meant that concentration came rapidly. They focused on the best parts of the property, discarding 30% of the parcels. It has a very harmonious bouquet with white peaches, orange sorbet, white flowers and a touch of crushed stone. It has an “airy” nose that gathers pace with aeration. The palate is very fresh in the mouth with slightly less weight and concentration than the 2015 tasted alongside. There are subtle spicy veins interwoven through the final third with hints of freshly shaved ginger that add another dimension towards the finish. This might not be up there with the top tier of Yquem’s over the last century, however, it is clearly a very well-crafted and complex Sauternes that will last many years.

Neal martin - VinousThe tannins and phenolic tension are very impressive to this. Dried-lemon undertones and burning botrytis. Full-to medium-bodied, linear and racy. Beautiful fruit and intensity. Such clarity. Extreme but wonderful style.

2017 Chateau d'YquemSauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkThe early part of winter was cold and very dry.

1998 Chateau d'Yquem (375ml)Sauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenClosure: CorkSuperlatives are often not enough when it comes to describing Chateau d'Yquem. Standing alone as the only Premier Cru Superieur ranked sauternes property, Chateau d'Yquem is situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France. Their unique position, and wealth of soil profiles, allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.
Other Reviews....
Pale gold colored, the 1998 d'Yquem features a flamboyant, rock-star nose of allspice, candied ginger, honeycomb and crème brûlée with a core of preserved lemons, mandarin peel and musk perfume plus a waft of potpourri. Beautifully balanced in the mouth, with seamless freshness lifting the decadent sweetness (134.4 grams per liter of residual sugar), it culminates with fantastically persistent layers of exotic spices.

2015 Y (Ygrec) d'YquemSauternes, Bordeaux, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenClosure: CorkNote from the vineyard:
A benchmark in Y’s history and the perfect reflection of a precise, complete vintage. Grape varieties: 75% Sauvignon Blanc – 25% Sémillon.Other Reviews....
No, not a 2016, but since it is the vintage currently for sale, then I will publish my review of the 2015 Ygrec here. The Sauvignon Blanc (75% of the blend) was picked quickly from 25-27 August this year, the Sémillon on 3 and 4 September. It has six grams per liter of residual sugar and the pH, a sizzling 3.20. It has an intriguing bouquet of melted wax, white flowers and hints of sea spray, that marine influence becoming quite strong with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with fresh ginger and lemongrass, lively in the mouth with shades of orange rind and sour lemon towards the persistent finish. I would afford this several years in bottle and I suspect you will end up with a very distinctive dry Bordeaux from the most famous Sauternes estate.

Bright pale straw to straw colour with a watery hue. Lifted peach, honeycomb and apricot scents are expelled from the glass followed by some crème brulee, bacon fat and butterscotch notes. Rich seductive ripe peach, apricot and honeycomb flavours show good textural volume in the mouth. Notions of crème brulee, roasted cashew and spice ensue. 2014 Chateau de Chantegrive Cuvee Caroline BlancGraves, Bordeaux, FRANCE$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenOther Reviews...
The Château de Chantegrive "Caroline" 2014 has a primal, pineapple and lime cordial-scented nose that possesses fine intensity. The palate is fresh and vibrant with good acidity on the entry, flattening out a little on the finish, but delivering acceptable length. Good. But I have a sneaking suspicion that it could have been even better. Drink 2016 - 2024.

I like the density of fruit in this young wine with dried pineapple and honey character. It shows lots of potential to grow and improve. Special cuvée of this estate.

The de Fieuzal 2018 Blanc bursts from the glass with gregarious green mango, guava and fresh limes scents followed by green apples and pineapple plus a waft of honeysuckle. 2014 Chateau de Fieuzal BlancPessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE$105. 00Bottle$1260.00 DozenOther Reviews...
The Château de Fieuzal Blanc 2014 has an attractive nose: lime mixed with citrus fruit and touches of grilled walnut coming through with aeration. The palate is quite shrill on the entry with attacking lime and citrus scents. The acidity is quite strong here, but there is plenty of fruit and a lovely sense of tension on the finish. This is an excellent Pessac-Léognan from this rejuvenated estate. Drink 2017 - 2030.

Contemporary in style, gentle vanilla bean toasting, gourmet without straying over into sweet. Lower feeling pf acidity than some. Nice lemon curd finish, from regular lees stirring. Low temperature vinification at below 20°C. Hubert de Boüard is consultant here. 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Semillon.

2014 Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet Les Chalumeaux Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Chalumeaux has a very expressive, wet limestone, sea spray and flint-scented bouquet that opens with confidence. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, rounded in the mouth but kept in check by the keen line of acidity. This is very refined and yet voluminous with lingering passion fruit and white peach notes on the sustained aftertaste. Excellent.

Neal Martin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate #222 (Dec 2015)Firm reduction renders the nose unreadable. On the plus side there is a beguiling sense of energy to the stony and beautifully delineated and ultra-saline flavors that conclude in a strikingly persistent and solidly complex finale. This isn't quite as refined as the Garenne but this is still very pretty.

Allen Meadows - burghound.comBright yellow. Sexy stone fruits and spices on the very subtle nose, complicated by a note of flint. Very much alive on the palate, with its alluring sweetness nicely brightened by lemon zest acidity. The rising finish conveys excellent intensity and thrust. Still very young.
