The Blanc de Lynch Bages 2014 is a blend of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 28% Sémillon and 20% Muscadelle raised in 45% new wood. It has a crisp, fresh pear and green apple-scented bouquet, the oak neatly disguised. The palate has a twist of bitter lemon on the entry, with good weight in the mouth and is lively and quite spicy toward the finish with a touch of lemongrass on the aftertaste. Not bad at all. Drink 2016 - 2022.

The 2016 Blanc de Lynch-Bages delivers notions of ripe apples, spiced pears and lemon pie with touches of lime zest and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied with super intensity in the mouth, it has a seriously zesty palate and a long refreshing finish.

The 2016 Blanc de Lynch Bages has a delightful brioche-scented bouquet with subtle lime flower aromas and hints of frangipane. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity. A touch of toffee apple and lychee emerges toward the nicely composed finish. Very fine.

A vivid white with mango, lemon and peach aromas. Exotic yet fresh. Pear drop. Full-bodied, layered and flavorful. Juicy and clean. Always wonderful to drink, but can improve with age.

The light gold-colored 2016 Blanc de Lynch Bages has a classic, honeyed minerality and white grapefruit perfume that’s followed by a clean, medium-bodied, vibrant white that’s already drinking beautifully.

Crisp, fresh, citrus, flowers, lime and green apple notes, with a round, sweet, appealing, crunchy, yellow citrus finish are what you'll find here.

This offers more proof that the whites in the Médoc have resisted the heat of August. The pH here is 3.01, and certainly the impression in the glass is of beautiful freshness with a creamy mid-palate of white peaches, honeysuckle and gentle citrus sorbet. Fermented at a low temperature in a combination of stainless steel, one year old barrels and 45% new oak with a very light toast, this is very delicate and extremely pretty. A blend of 52% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon and 18% Muscadelle.

    2020 Bodega Chacra Chardonnay
    Patagonia, ARGENTINA
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Bodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.

Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.

Done in collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot, Chacra Chardonnay is produced from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

    Other Reviews....
There’s real direction and clarity to this white with sliced dried apples, crushed stones and minerals on the nose, as well as hints of biscuit and praline. Some honeysuckle and lemon-grass undertones, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and lively with a line of fresh acidity running through the palate, providing energy and depth. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Drinkable now, but much better in three to four years. Try after 2023.

“Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, from 40 year old vines in mineral soils with alluvial stones covered in calcaire. 9 month in 1st use French oak barrels for 15% and 2nd and 3rd use French oak barrels for 85%”
From the cold climes of Patagonia, and given I’ve not reviewed much Chardonnay for a while, I was feeling sorry for our own JH. Chacra is the word for a small farm, as opposed to your Chakra, which sometimes, apparently, needs alignment as they are a little vague and wobbly.
Cool feel here, with mint and fennel, a little nougat gloss, and some cinnamon spice and struck match, green pear and citrus. There’s a sort of preserved lemon bitterness in with fine chalky grip, a honey and white flower perfume, and a tight yet creamy finish of excellent length. Delicate, but firm in character. Drink 2022 - 2028+.

Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. “Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, 3 parcels with varying range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. With early picking, the wines are fermented and aged for 10 months in barrels from Roulot’s domaine in Meursault (30% in concrete eggs, 10% for 9 months in 1st use, 60 % in 2 & 3rd use).” Patagonia Chardonnay here, though likely not from the North Face. I tried the 2018 vintage of this wine and its big sister back in February 2020, and preferred this one at the time for its energy and charm, and now we are on to the 2020 vintage, which I guess was sitting happily on the vine back then.
It’s glossy and gently creamy, but has plenty of flinty energy, cashew and green melon, with a lemon peel and melon rind bitterness, subtle spiced cinnamon oak, almost a green olive flavour and saline character, a whisper of struck match, and a tight preserved lemon finish of fine length. Sophisticated. Lovely to drink. Drink 2021 - 2026+.

A fresh, ripe, elegant and quite floral nose evidences hints of green apple, pear and mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas that are trimmed in discreet wood toast. The rich, full-bodied and mouth coating broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent concentration and power and finally culminate in an explosive and fantastically long if somewhat chewy finish. This is perhaps a bit less elegant than it usually is but I suspect that as the underlying material, which is exceptionally dense, resolves that it will become more refined with age. Impressive and the supporting acidity is perfectly well integrated.Tasted: Jun 01, 2012.

Notes of matchstick and reduction push the underlying fruit to the background though I suspect that the nose will clean up with a few years of aging. Otherwise there is very good volume to the surprisingly lush, even opulent, middle weight flavors though there is plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the well-balanced bitter lemon-inflected finish. This could also be approached young. Drink 2025+.

Aromas of ripe lemons, praline, crushed chalk and white flowers introduce the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières, a medium to full-bodied, pure and chiseled wine with lovely mid-palate amplitude, a bright line of acidity and a chalky, tight-knit core. Like the Genevrières, this is one of the highlights from chez Bouchard this year.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

Sexy aromas of peach, pineapple and crushed stone. A step up from the Genevrières in suavity and mineral definition, displaying captivating inner-mouth lift and perfume. Large-scaled, tactile yet precise, this beauty finishes with terrific palate-saturating length and verve. Boasts the classic wet-stone minerality of this great premier cru--and it tastes more concentrated than its yield of 45 hectoliters per hectare would suggest.

Three plots. Maintains the palish colour. Then significantly heady. Perrières often is on the edge of falling over. Very much a mineral style on the palate through with the ripe bacon fat notes behind. Good acidity with just enough reductive character.

    2019 Bricco Ernesto Vino Bianco
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Bricco Ernesto company was born in the small village of Priocca in Roero, Piedmont, and is run by one of the most talented and driven vignerons in the region; Renato Vezza. Along with his partner, they juggle multiple-part time jobs in their quest to maximize the potential of this land which has been farmed sustainably since the 1990's. The cellar is as stripped down as they come, with just a few cement tanks and a small collection of barrels. That's pretty much it.

With the 2019 vintage Renato has produced a small amount of Arneis for the first time. However, the Bricco Ernesto Bianco is not an Arneis as you normally know it. 100% Arnies that is macerated and fermented in wood for 100 days before aging for 6 months in Amphora and then 6 months in bottle. By no means an aperitif wine, but a multi-layered, deep, complex wine with aromas of honey, beeswax, stone fruit and herbs, with texture, medium body and length. A truly tiny 800 bottles only made in this first vintage.

    Other Reviews....
I thought this was going to be another Piedmont bianco, and then saw the colour and thought ‘Oooh good!. It’s (Roero) Arneis that spends a whopping 100 days on skins in old wood, then goes into anfora. 800 bottles produced.
Orange, waxy, nutty, spicy, dried herb, floral, stonefruit. Chewy but fresh. A lot of grip, but a wholesome feel to the tannin, if that makes sense. Long and spicy. Really good skin contact white here. I never decided on 94 or 95 points. Either way. Drink 2021 - 2027.

The 2016 Roero Arneis was bottled on Saint Valentine's Day and that's a fitting touch. Some 140,000 bottles were made, which is more than average. This is a fresh and buoyant wine that is loaded with tangy tropical fruit, pineapple and honeydew melon. The wine's intensity is exuberant, pronounced and refreshing. Dustings of fine mineral and salty limestone characteristics give the wine a brilliant sense of polish and crispness. Bruna Giacosa tells me the fruit harvested in 2016 was beautiful. She distinctly remembers the perfumes of the Arneis grapes as they came into the winery on the back of a truck during harvest. This is a beautiful white wine. Drink 2017-2020.

For her first vintage in 2014 she had small holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet for both red and white together with small holdings in Santenay and Hautes Cotes de Beaune totaling just 2.4 hectares. With more vineyards added both from family and acquisitions in the last few years, the total is now 7 hectares in total for Caroline with roughly half for red and half for whites.

Once again there is plenty of citrus influence on the layered aromas of spiced pear, apple, white peach and just sliced fennel. The more refined and slightly more voluminous flavors possess a really lovely sense of underlying tension as well as an abundance of minerality on the lingering and balanced finale that isn't quite as dry or youthfully austere. Good stuff and worth considering. Drink 2029+.

The first to be picked and still 14.1%, though as this note demonstrates, this Caillerets can easily handle that degree of ripeness. There is more green in the colour blend this time. This starts discreetly, then builds brilliantly on the palate, the acidity is really well integrated, seamless and vibrant. Really delicious graceful wine with a light cream touch at the finish.

Once again there is enough sulfur to overshadow the underlying fruit that clearly seems ripe. There is very good density to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that flash focused power on the bone-dry finish that is shaped by lemon-tinged acidity. A deft application of wood sets off the ripe and appealingly spicy nose that displays mostly white peach and hints of orange peel. Reticent aromas are comprised by notes of white flowers, orchard fruit and subtle application of wood. There is a bit more weight and volume to the vibrant and sappy middle weight flavors that possess slightly better depth and persistence. This is a very good Chassagne villages and worth checking out.

The name of the cuvée denotes its three origins, Bergerie, Masures and Chênes. Pale colour with a light lemon tint. Attractive light perfume on the nose then a wealth of crystalline white fruit on the plate with surprising depth to it. Very successful with excellent weight.

Once again sulfur overshadows the fruit rendering the nose impossible to assess. By contrast there is good freshness to the finer if slightly less concentrated flavors that possess a refined texture along with plenty of minerality on the sneaky long and austere finale. This too should repay extended keeping as it will almost certainly add body and depth with time in bottle.

Caroline’s holding is in the centre of the vineyard, with rows running from top to bottom. Lovely primrose colour here. A touch of sulphur currently inhibits the nose. Excellent intensity with stone licking minerality, and a huge volume of concentrated fruit to soak it up. Very fine.

From one of Argentina’s most famous Estates this single vineyard wine is a faithful expression of Mendoza's highest altitude microclimate where warm, sunny days and cool nights allow the chardonnay grapes grown at the foot of the Cordón del Plata mountain range to achieve excellent balance and maturity. Aged in French oak (40% new) for a period of 14 months.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense white peach and ripe pear aromas carry a distinct dried honey overlay with notes of citrus, green apple, nougat, faint cashew, slate and mineral ensuing. Rich, expansive and powerful but not heavy this wine possesses a Grand Cru Chablis like character. Concentrated white peach and pear fruits combine with dried honey, subtle cashew and nougat over a wet slate and oyster shell back drop. Exceptional length with vibrant acidity lending an energetic feel to the very long, refined and mineral infused conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted top notes of white peach, ripe nectarine and lemon butter are followed by some dried honey, nougat and spice. Rich, ripe white peach and nectarine flavours dominate the palate over dried honey, lemon butter and a touch of nougat. Creamy textural feel with a dry fresh finish. Long white peach, dried honey, nougat and spice aftertaste.
    Cellar 4-5 years.

Matured in two French puncheons (one new) and three French barriques. It has a complex, faintly funky, bouquet ex 100% mlf (essential to reduce acidity) and repeated lees stirring. Despite this, it is remarkably fine and tight, possibly protected with all movements in the cellar by gravity. These are high spirited wines, and need a gentle hand to calm them. Drink by 2033.

One of my favorite vintages for this cuvee, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc never fails to impress. Revealing a medium-gold color, it has gorgeous richness and depth in its honeyed stone fruits, peach, buttered-citrus and salty minerality. Voluptuous, full-bodied and decadently textured, it has both freshness and focus, both of which come through on the finish. I'd drink bottles over the coming 2-3 years, or hold off for a decade.

The 2015 Brown Blanc has a lively, showy bouquet with lime cordial and freshly squeezed grapefruit scents that are neatly entwined with the new oak. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, tropical tones of nectarine, Clementine and peach rending this almost drinkable now. It is well balanced and displays fine length, a white Pessac that should give great pleasure over the next 12-15 years.

The 2015 Carbonnieux Blanc is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon. It has a tightly wound grapefruit, white peach and citrus scented bouquet that slowly unfurls in the glass. The Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2014 has a pretty nose in the making: precise apple blossom and blackcurrant leaf aromas that gently waft from the glass. The palate is crisp on the entry, the acidity not as shrill as some of its peers, thus rendering it a more "languid" Pessac-Léognan. There is already a very elegant, gravelly finish that lingers in the mouth-a very promising Carbonnieux Blanc that may merit a higher score after bottling. Drink 2018 - 2032.

They always major on precision aromatics at this château, can really feel those knife-edge freshly sliced citrus flavours, touches of lime blossom, clean and fresh. A touch lean in the mid palate again, seems a characteristic of the vintage, 12.8%abv, 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon, ph3.25. Quite an early harvest, even the Semillon was brought in by September 19, and just 20% new oak.

From a zippy blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sauvignon Gris. Expect technical, precision winemaking from this property, which in 2014 included skin maceration to naturally lower the acidity. Consultant here is Valérie Lavigne, who works alongside Denis Dubourdieu at the ISVV and is a specialist in white wines - so great care is taken to work on the aromatics of the grapes, from a cold soak at 5°C to ensure aromas are extracted without bitterness, and restrained use of 20% new oak, that is used alongside 60% stainless steel and 20% large wooden vats - all to avoid damaging the citrus, cut grass and stone fruit aromas of the Sauvignon. Certainly there is great potential on display here with fresh acidity but clean fruit definition and an attractive mid-palate weight. As with the reds, great potential at this property.

One of the superstars of Barsac, the wines are typically noted for their elegance and style rather than weight and richness. At 38.5 hectares in size, Coutet is one of the largest vineyards in the region, with plantings consisting of 75 % Semillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrel of which 50% are new with further ageing in oak for 18 months.

Aline Baly kindly furnished me with background information on the 2020 Coutet. "The first sorting occurred on September 16 and 17 to harvest the botrytis resulting from the thunderstorms of August 15," she told me. "The second and third passeage were organized quickly, as the climatic conditions were becoming unfavorable. The teams were ready to harvest within the hour, as soon as a weather window emerged. This second phase of harvest finally took place on September 23 before a thunderstorm that resulted in a cumulative rainfall of 38mm. Then the harvest continued September 29 and 30 before 77mm of precipitation. A new passeage was initiated, initially, on October 8 and 9, but 140mm of rain accumulated since the first sort strongly impacted concentration levels, encouraging us to be patient until October 12. We resumed the harvest under normal conditions until October 22 but with a very capricious forecast. A fifth and sixth sort followed one another, and the harvest ended on October 26.” Coutet has a very perfumed and more floral bouquet compared to, say, the de Fargues that happens to precede it, aromas of dandelion and apricot mingling with saffron and light chamomile. The palate is well balanced, very pure and lightly spiced, displaying a tang of marmalade and quince toward a finish that is marked by Coutet’s trademark acidic bite. Quintessentially Coutet, this should give 25–30 years of drinking pleasure.

The pale lemon-gold colored 2019 Coutet is a thrill ride from the get-go, exploding from the glass with fantastically intense scents of tangerine peel, lime blossoms and lemon marmalade over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, candied ginger, ripe apricots and clover honey plus suggestions of chanterelles and musk perfume. The 2017 Coutet is very, very good. Nuanced and beautifully textured, throughout, the 2017 has quite a bit to offer. Silky contours add finesse to the orange peel, apricot jam, mint and spice flavors. Above all else, Coutet offers terrific depth while remaining light on its feet.

Another rocking sweet wine is the 2017 Château Coutet. This big, full-bodied, opulent beauty has serious notes of orange blossom, buttered citrus, and honey, yet also shows the more pure, precise, and elegant style of the vintage on the palate. The cool, overcast summer allowed good ripeness while preserving the purity of fruit and the whites (and dessert wines) from this vintage are beautiful!

The 2017 Coutet has lovely notions of spice cake, fresh ginger and honeysuckle over a core of lemon curd, beeswax and preserved peaches. Rich, spicy and quite decadent in the mouth, it has wonderful freshness and depth, finishing very long.

Bright pineapple and white peach flavors rush forth, with a zip of tangerine running through the creamy finish. Shows lots of honeysuckle accents on the finish. Youthfully tight, but delivers wonderful length.—J.M.

This wine shows great balance and poised elegance. Its botrytis fruit gives it rich intensity, with a ripe orange-marmalade flavor and layers of tight acidity. This will be a wine for serious aging and not ready to drink before 2024.

Superlatives are often not enough when it comes to describing Chateau d'Yquem. Standing alone as the only Premier Cru Superieur ranked sauternes property, Chateau d'Yquem is situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France. Their unique position, and wealth of soil profiles, allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.

    Other Reviews....
The pale to medium lemon-gold colored 2005 d'Yquem opens with a provocative, mineral and earth-tinged nose of chalk dust, wet pebbles and dried wild mushrooms over a core of warm apricots, green mango, honeyed toast, ginger and pink grapefruit plus wafts of honeycomb, orange blossoms and saffron. The palate confirms the wine is still a little closed and shut down, offering achingly gorgeous glimpses at the tightly wound, intricate layers structured with a racy acid line and wonderfully creamy texture, finishing incredibly long and perfumed. This decadent flavor bomb still needs a good five to seven years in bottle before it is set to go off, but oh what a spectacle it will give then!

What an incredible nose of flowers, honey, spices such as clove, and sandalwood. With time, decadent aromas of apple tart and crumble develop. Full and very round on the palate, this is medium sweet with a velvety texture. Flavors of honey, apple and pear tart appear on the long finish. This is so beautiful, hard not to drink now but will greatly improve with more time. 140 grams of RS.

This has a deliciously pure feel, with juicy, inviting green plum, ginger, heather, creamed pineapple and Jonagold apple flavors all melded together and gliding through the lengthy finish, which echoes with lilting flowers and dried citrus notes. Best from 2015 through 2045. 12,000 cases made.

Buttery, lush, sweet, ripe and overripe pineapple, apricot and orange rind coated with honey and vanilla beans are found on the nose and palate. Rich, full-bodied, luscious and sweet, the blazing jolt of acidity keeps the wine up and the taster interested. Like all vintages of Yquem, the wine takes several decades to achieve full maturity. And also like all the best vintages of d'Yquem, it's just delicious to enjoy in its youth.

I have had the very good fortune to taste the 2001 d'Yquem perhaps a dozen times since its release and have never been less than absolutely floored by its combination of poise, purity, precision and layer upon intricate, jaw-dropping layer of flavor nuances. It is among a very small clutch of incredible wines that crash through the 100-point ceiling and rocket beyond the stratosphere! A testament to that magic that can be created when an uncommonly great vintage for Sauternes brings out the best of an extraordinary vineyard and is skillfully, sensitively crafted, the 2001 is a true wine rarity that must be tried to be believed.
Pale to medium lemon-gold, the nose is simply WOW—an absolute show-stopper, delivering vibrant, youthful lime cordial, pink grapefruit and lemon meringue pie scents followed up by suggestions of chamomile tea, saffron, cassis and nutmeg plus wafts of marzipan, crushed rocks and beeswax. The palate is beyond-belief intense, offering a myriad of decadent citrus fruit preserves and earthy/mineral-inspired nuances, instilling incredible depth, all punctuated by profound freshness and finishing epically long and exquisitely delicious. The alcohol this vintage is 13.6%, while the residual sugar is a whopping 150 grams per liter, beautifully balanced by a total acidity of 4.5 grams per liter of H2SO4. Obviously, the longer readers are willing to cellar this, the more they will get of that ethereal tertiary complexity/experience. This said, for those who love great Sauternes in its youthful/primary flushes, even at this very early stage in its evolution, the multifaceted 2001 d'Yquem will not disappoint.

What a pure wine, with honey, caramel, cooked apple, bon bon, and pear tart. Dried apricots and peaches develop with time in the glass. What a palate, it is very sweet and rich at the impact, but then it’s dense and opulent like a Grand Cru Burgundy, think Montrachet. Apples, honey, and pineapples with hints of mango on the palate. This is an incredible wine, a real dream, a legend. 150 grams of RS.

The greatest young Yquem I have ever tasted from bottle. Yellow, with a golden hue and an almost green tint. Intense aromas of botrytis, spices and blanched almonds follow through to honey, maple syrup, dried apricot and pineapple. Full-bodied, sweet, thick and powerful, with layers of fruit and a bright, lively finish. Coats the palate yet remains exciting. So balanced and refined, showing the pedigree that only this Sauternes estate can deliver. Best after 2012. 10,000 cases made.

The 2018 d'Yquem is all lime cordial, grapefruit oil and mandarin peel to begin. With a little coaxing, the fireworks really begin, letting off a whole array of honeysuckle, candied ginger, dried pineapple, lemon pastilles, chalk dust and sea spray scents, followed by a savory undercurrent of shaved almonds, allspice and baking bread. The palate is an exercise in polish and poise, featuring the most gorgeously creamy texture and bright, sparkling freshness, framing all the densely laden tropical and citrus fruit layers, finishing with a powerful BANG of profound floral and spice perfume. It is wonderfully sweet, yes, but that—paradoxically for a "sweet wine"—is almost beside the point.

An extremely polished and refined d’Yquem with lightly cooked peaches and mangos and an overlay of vanilla and cream with some lemon meringue. Orange peel, too. What is striking is the texture, which is creamy and so fine. The tannins give the wine energy and beauty. The finish is extremely long and impressive. So clean and refined. Not heavy at all, but vivid and clean as crystal. Goes on for minutes. Elegance with stature is a good description. Drinkable now, but better in 2023 and onwards.

Average temperatures 2.7°C over average, combined with 20% of the normal rainfall from mid August to the end of July made makes this a naturally rich, lowyielding vintage (40% less than average, not helped by a hail storm in July), with a gloriously gourmet 145g/ha residual sugar, and a pH level of 3.95. As ever with Yquem, patience was the key, taking in the grapes slowly but surely over 17 days harvest that extended well into October. The results in the glass are intense and glossy, full of satin-textured apricot and white peach flavours. There are exotic fruits of pineapple and mango but winemaker Sandrine Garbay has kept a focus on fresher flavours of lime zest and citrus that balance out the natural richness and concentration. Pretty closed right now, but there is power and balance here, an excellent Yquem. Drinking Window 2022 - 2050.

Y d'Yquem (Ygrec) is the rare, dry wine from Chateau d'Yquem. Historically Y was made in the years when the season didn't allow for sufficient accumulation of botrytis, but since 2004 the decision was made to make the wine each vintage. Differing from the sweet wine, Y is composed of predominantly Sauvignon Blanc (75%) with the balance Semillon, harvested early in the season, before being matured in barrel (one third new) for approximately ten months. The 2019 wine was harvested relatively early after a wet spring and hot summer accelerated growth, but the team were able to pick perfectly healthy grapes that balanced richness and freshness.

The early part of winter was cold and very dry. Warmer temperatures and rain returned in February and the weather in March led to a quick start to vegetative growth. The most significant event of spring 2017 occurred in late April when frost struck to a degree that had not been seen since 1991. Miraculously, temperatures did not go below the freezing point at Château d'Yquem so the vines were spared an impact.
To add insult to injury, the summer of 2017 was the 4th hottest since 1897 which meant the growing season was a good month ahead of average, an advance that reached a peak on about the 20th of June. This meant records were broken again when picking began earlier than ever before, on the 16th of August, and both grape varieties managed to uniformly ripen in late August and in perfect condition.

In summary, 2017 was a brilliant year with total botrytis and tremendous concentration that called for very specific sorting techniques to stay within the parameters defined by Chateau Yquem.

2017 is a very great success, worthy of the finest vintages ending in "7".

    Other Reviews....
There was no frost at d’Yquem in 2017, and botrytis was very regular and even this vintage. The nose opens with very pure notes of freshly sliced oranges, yuzu and lemon barley water with hints of white pepper, fresh ginger and lime cordial. The incredibly rich, unctuous sweetness (148 grams per liter of residual sugar) is beautifully marbled with bright, vivacious citrus fruit and spice flavors, while lifted by well-knit freshness, and it finishes with epic length and great depth.

The 2017 Yquem, which was not affected by frost, was picked in two tries from 26 to 29 September and 5 to 10 October. There is 148gm/L residual sugar and a 3.8 pH, alcohol coming in at 13.9°. The early September rain prompted homogenous pourriture noble and this was followed by a warm period that meant that concentration came rapidly. They focused on the best parts of the property, discarding 30% of the parcels. It has a very harmonious bouquet with white peaches, orange sorbet, white flowers and a touch of crushed stone. It has an “airy” nose that gathers pace with aeration. The palate is very fresh in the mouth with slightly less weight and concentration than the 2015 tasted alongside. There are subtle spicy veins interwoven through the final third with hints of freshly shaved ginger that add another dimension towards the finish. This might not be up there with the top tier of Yquem’s over the last century, however, it is clearly a very well-crafted and complex Sauternes that will last many years.

The tannins and phenolic tension are very impressive to this. Dried-lemon undertones and burning botrytis. Full-to medium-bodied, linear and racy. Beautiful fruit and intensity. Such clarity. Extreme but wonderful style.

Pale gold colored, the 1998 d'Yquem features a flamboyant, rock-star nose of allspice, candied ginger, honeycomb and crème brûlée with a core of preserved lemons, mandarin peel and musk perfume plus a waft of potpourri. Beautifully balanced in the mouth, with seamless freshness lifting the decadent sweetness (134.4 grams per liter of residual sugar), it culminates with fantastically persistent layers of exotic spices.
