Chardonnay

Chardonnay produces what is arguably the greatest of dry white wines, forming the basis of Chablis, Burgundy and Champagne. Beyond the simple primary fruit flavours of peach and tropical fruit, skilfully-made barrel-fermented Chardonnays include butterscotch, honeysuckle, fig, cashew, cinnamon, citrus and biscuit notes. Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault and Corton-Charlemagne are some of the most famous names from Burgundy. From Australia, producers such as Giaconda, Bannockburn & Leeuwin Estate offer world class, age-worthy examples. Browse our top rated Chardonnay wines here.

Upper Yarra Valley. 30% new oak. 100% malolactic fermentation.
Nectarine, lime, nuts, a little cedar and spice. It’s glossy and gently viscous, with a saline and savoury flavour, bright and tight citrus acidity through creaminess, lime and grapefruit, an edge of tropical fruit too, some pith-like texture and grip, with an intense and juicy citrus finish of excellent length. A bit different, and very good in that way too. Excellent. Drink 2023-2027.

Barrel fermented, 20% new oak. Bryan Currie made this.
Concentrated aromas, nougat and almond meal with peaches and apples, just enough of cloves and nutmeg spice. The palate is leaner than the rich nose but still full-flavoured, focused, with grapefruit juice and wet stones mineral aftertaste. It has an elegant and steady flow. There’s a bit of salt and dried eucalyptus leaves in it too, nice one. Solid expression, built well.

2022 was a truly exceptional vintage in Margaret River with ideal conditions and slow ripening of Chardonnay producing pristine fruit. The Reserve Chardonnay is assembled from two central Wilyabrup vineyards, with additional fruit coming from an excellent mature vineyard in Wallcliffe and a small amount of fruit from Karridale. The fruit is handpicked and whole bunch pressed to new and seasoned oak for wild fermentation, followed by 9 months of maturation on lees before being blended for bottling.

    Other Reviews….
Sourced from the best grapes, hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, fermented in new and used French oak; only the best barrels are chosen for this wine. It is a beautiful Chardonnay, offering complexity and length to its white peach core. 96 Points James Halliday – The Weekend Australian Magazine 2023 An impressive chardonnay with notes of salted lemons, sliced pineapples, flint, sea shell, raw almonds and praline. Full-bodied, layered, concentrated and so balanced, with a delicate, sleek texture and tangy, saline undertones. It is vivid and delicious. Long. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    JamesSuckling.com

The quality of the 2022 vintage meant that very little fruit got downgraded from the Reserve level. The quantity in this low-yielding vintage was healthy (1,000 dozen with new vineyard resources online). I maintain that this cuvée is released too early (November the year following harvest) to show its pedigree and potential, of which it is abundantly endowed. So, this 2022 Reserve Chardonnay leads with almond meal, toasted peach, apple skins and preserved citrus. There are hints of sandalwood, clove, cut fennel and star anise. The fruit in the mouth plumes around the skeleton of phenolics that shape the flavor through the finish. It is textural and complex, detailed and fleshy. This is very good! Will be better! The drinking window is conservative. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023 – 2037.

A regional blend including grapes from two central Wilyabrup vineyards, with additional fruit coming from Wallcliffe and a small amount of fruit from Karridale. Struck match, grilled lime and peach, almond meal, spicy oak. It’s a big mouthful of ripe citrus, pear and peach, aniseed, with toasted oak, something of an umami Parmesan rind flavour, quite juicy with some dry grip to texture, and a finish of good length. It’s a bold glass of Chardonnay, with plenty to hang on to, and I reckon it’s pretty good drinking over the medium term. Drink 2023 – 2028.

This is also firmly reduced and revealing nothing save for a touch of wood toast. There is excellent density and power to the larger-scaled flavors that display the robustness typical of Clos du Cromin on the clean, dry and persistent finish that is borderline tannic. Pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is discreet, suggesting medium density of correctly ripe fruit. There is a little more body underneath, with quite complex aromatics, a touch of spice overlying a bed of white fruit. Citrus appears lightly at the very end. Looking good! Drink from 2024-2028.

Pungent aromas of oak toast, reduction and lemon zest precede the finer and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate mid-palate density as they coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while displaying lovely balance, on the classy, clean, crisp and well-balanced finale. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru sports a very subtle reduction on the nose and fine intensity, though I feel this will require some bottle age to really open up. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, fine substance here, lovely acidity with fresh green apple, pear and lime towards the finish. An appealingly bitter aftertaste urges you back for another sip. Classy. Drink 2024-2045.

Mid lemon yellow. The 2021 Bourgogne Côte d'Or, which comes entirely from the domaine, has a fragrant bouquet with Granny Smith apples and fresh pears. The palate is well balanced, the 20% new oak nicely integrated, and is slightly leesy towards the composed finish. Fine. Drink 2024-2030.

Two thirds from below Puligny, one third Chassagne. Pale colour, with a tight and reductive nose. Slightly smoky. An amiable tension, some greener notes, but there is good flesh too. Still quite backward. This may blossom from here, but my score is cautious. Drink from 2024-2026.

Firm reduction. There is more evident minerality if not the same mid-palate density to the rich but not really generous medium weight flavors that possess an even more refined texture that carries over to the bone-dry, balanced and sneaky long finish. Note that this is sufficiently firm to easily repay a decade plus of keeping. This too is excellent. Drink through 2031+.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a clean, precise nose, the same level of reduction as the Les Referts, with green apple and light limestone scents. The palate is very well balanced, surfeit with tension thanks to the acidity, precise and mineral-driven towards the finish. What a wonderful Folatières, one that should age gracefully in bottle. 2 x 350 litre barrels made from 0.42ha, though there was a moment when they didn’t expect to make anything. Mid lemon yellow. A form of nutty reduction here. There is only a vague hint of the hallmark Mont de Milieu exoticism on the aromas of white peach, ocean spray, lychee and shellfish--infused nose. The 2021 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru has a small reduction on the nose from a few barrels that had not settled by the time of my visit. Five plots, all at the Chablis end. Pale colour. The bouquet is quite reticent though there are some apple notes. A little more generosity starts to emerge, slowly. Very much more white fruit, though with the usual opulence, and the wood is completely integrated. Smart work on the sorting table. No more than 10-15% wood. Drink from 2025-2028.

Discreet if discernible wood sets off cool and pure essence of white orchard fruit, sea breeze and iodine scents. There is excellent underlying tension to the nicely concentrated medium-bodied flavors that possess both ample minerality and delineation on the balanced and lingering finish. This could also use better depth, but the underlying material appears more than up to the task and overall, it's one to consider. Drink through 2026+.

Made up from top sites such as Bas de Chapelot, l’Araignée, plus some from Pargues. Olivier has made up an approximate blend for this sample, including a proportion made in barrel. Tête d’Or will be bottled with the 1ers Crus. Another pale colour. The wood infuses the bouquet without drowning the fruit. The recent bottling is in evidence as firm reduction currently flattens the nose. Otherwise, there is excellent delineation to the markedly punchy and stony middleweight flavors that possess a cuts-like-a-knife, dry and linear finish. A markedly more floral-suffused and slightly cooler nose reflects notes of both white and yellow peach, citrus confit and a plenitude of spice elements. This superb rendition of Bâtard has surprisingly ripe notes of quince and melon de Cavaillon, acacia flower, and spice. The texture is dense and rich but kept lively by the fresh acidity of 2021. The grapes come from three parcels totaling nearly a half hectare. Two are planted with vines more than fifty years of age, and all three are in Chassagne near the border with Puligny. This year Blain stirred the lees (not always done) to give the wine a bit more density and depth. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Moderately firm reduction overshadows the underlying fruit at present. Offering up notes of pear, white flowers, toasted almonds and beeswax, Bouchard's 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, with a more tightly wound, introverted profile than the Charmes that preceded it. Built to age, this is a serious Genevrières that I look forward to tasting from bottle.

A blend of two parcels, the 2019 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru was the first to be picked by Bouchard in this appellation. The well-defined bouquet features touches of lemon thyme, walnut and smoke. The palate is balanced with fine acidity, fresh and focused. Spicy and notably ripe yet fresh aromas of petrol, white peach and plenty of floral elements give way to slightly finer though less concentrated flavors that possess focused power and evident minerality on the compact, youthfully austere and more structured finale that flashes huge length. Aromas of white flowers, fresh peach, toasted bread, mandarin oil and pastry cream introduce Bouchard's 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep and concentrated, with racy acids, terrific mid-palate amplitude and a long, saline finish. Broad shouldered and powerful without being at all overbearing, it's an exemplary rendition of this celebrated site.

The 2019 Montrachet Grand Cru has a complex bouquet of crushed chalk, mirabelle, apricot and light vanilla pod aromas, plus just a touch of white chocolate in the background. This is still a bit closed on the nose, but on the palate it is rippling with ripe-apricot and orange character. Dense and rich, almost to the point of being unctuous, although this is properly dry. Serious tannin structure behind the lavish exterior, which, together with the fresh acidity, keeps this on course through the very generous finish. Drink or hold.

Clear fresh lemon and lime colour. The nose is magisterial. There is a little light coconut even though only 20% new wood is used. Very distinguished though, and restrained. So smooth throughout the palate with excellent lifted citrus fruit acidity, waves of white fruit flavour course across the palate, a little essence of pear, but no feeling of undue heat.

Bouchard's 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru confirms its fine showing last year, unwinding in the glass with scents of pear, citrus oil and toasted bread, complemented by hints of nutmeg, praline and white flowers. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's satiny and incisive, with terrific depth at the core, chalky structuring extract, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. This is as compelling an infant Chevalier as I can remember tasting at this address, and it should enjoy a brilliant future. Drink 2029 - 2055.

The usual blend of the four terraces, the 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet featuring delicate scents of yellow plum, citrus fruit, flint and smoke. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite taut on the entry, and a fine saline undertow enlivens the finish. A classically styled Chevalier, though I would like to see more mineralité. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Its really hard to imagine how a white Brugundy could be more flinty and minerally than this super-concentrated and super-vibrant Chevalier Montrachet. Lovely aromas of lemon blossom, jasmine, tangerine and nectarine, alongside all the stony stuff. Then comes the staggeringly long finish that is totally pure and precise. From Bouchard’s 2.3-hectare holding, which comprises almost a third of the entire Grand Cru site. Drink or hold.

Four terrasses together, mid yellow, some white fruit, some power, wait and see. The palate brings out all the Chevalier character with a few little touches of mandarin, very clean long white fruit finish, manages the heat of the year very well.

This is quite firmly reduced at present and revealing nothing on the nose. Otherwise there is excellent intensity and delineation to the overtly mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a chiseled and youthfully austere finale that exudes refreshing hints of bitter lemon. This beautiful effort is classy and notably more harmonious plus it should age effortlessly. Drink 2031+.

It’s no big secret that the prices of Burgundy have skyrocketed in recent years and whilst the wines from Chablis haven’t risen quite as steeply it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even locate sub $50 Petit Chablis. So a $60 Premier Cru Chablis that delivers exceptional quality is indeed a rare find these days.
Francis Boudin is the third-generation vigneron at Chantemerle and the estate firmly falls in the traditional mould - he despises oak. As the story goes, his grandfather was a cooper and with so much exposure to oak during his formative years he banished it from the family cellars opting for concrete and steel alone.
Old vine material is the key to the estate’s success. While many in the region during the 1970's were re-planting vineyards to high-yielding material the Boudins were planting with naturally low-yielding vines. Along with careful vineyard management, an informed but gentle touch in the winery and judicious lees work to bring out flesh and texture, Boudin produces supple wines, that speak of place clearly layered with Chablis' prized minerality.

A gorgeous Premier Cru Chablis that’s drinking superbly and delivers amazing value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with yellow straw tinged edges and a watery hue. Showing plenty of intensity, seductive pear, lime and green to apple scents laced with wet stone, dried honey and oyster shell like notes evolve out of the glass. Possessing a river stone like textural feel, this gorgeous Chablis features rich, mouth filling pear, lime and dried honey flavours that envelope the palate. Lending further interest are wet slate, chalky mineral and oyster shell like characters. Excellent concentration and drive with fresh underlying acidity. Finishes long and pure. Proves there’s still value to be had in Chablis.

Cyril Audoin has turned in another superb performance in the 2020 vintage, delivering wines of perfume, energy and precision that transcend stereotypes of their appellation. Marsannay nourishes a number of high-quality domaines, and the village offers rich pickings for wine lovers, but Audoin might well be my favorite. What's more, anyone who laments rising prices in the Côte d'Or should take note of the terrific value this estate's wines represent, because quality at this level should honestly cost quite a bit more.
The 2020 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc is brilliant, revealing aromas of pear, lime zest, freshly baked bread, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, its textural attack segues into a chiseled, electric mid-palate, concluding with a long, tangy finish. Drink 2023-2035.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted white peach, nectarine, citrus and dried honey scents are trailed by hints of biscuity nougat and flinty minerals. Concentrated ripe pear, white peach and nectarine fruits are underpinned by zesty, mineral infused acidity. Since our initial tasting, nearly two years ago, the palate has filled out and put on a bit more weight yet still remains lively and energetic. Subtle biscuit, crème brulee and infusions of gun flint linger through the back half. Understated in its power with a faint cream tinged yet highly invigorating feel, it finishes long and elegant.

Original tasting January 2022: Brilliant very pale straw colour with a subtle glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating scents of white peach, pear, lime and dried honey drift through the olfactory senses with biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and spice notes ensuing. Brimming with freshness, delightful white peach, nectarine and lime fruits are glowing with energy. Subtle honeyed citrus, light biscuity oak and flinty mineral characters are also present. Vibrant, mineral infused acidity lends plenty of zip and focus to the finish.

Aromas of citrus oil, pear, vanilla pod and nutmeg preface the 2019 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, layered and precise wine that's concentrated and tightly wound, with tangy acids and chalky structure. This derives from the upper part of the Clos du Roy, where the calcium-rich marls are suited to Chardonnay.

You might easily think that this white Burgundy came from a much more famous appellation than Marsannay, thanks to the citrus-blossom nose with a delicate hint of oak, then the excellent balance of creaminess and mineral freshness on the medium-bodied palate.

It has quite a hefty reduction on the nose that makes it difficult to read (perplexing Fabien Moreau). The palate is well balanced with a forthright, marmalade-tinged entry. Quite strict with fine acidity, it delivers a citrus-fresh, precise finish without a long tail on the aftertaste. Good luck finding a bottle. Drink 2025-2048.

Just one barrel. A paler lemon colour with green reflections. Much livelier on the nose, quite classy with a good detail here, fresh with medium depth., the finish spins out quite well. Less in white flowers and fruit than usual, a little more in fresh citrus. Drink from 2026-2031.

This is also agreeably cool and restrained with its prominent floral aromas that add a certain elegance to the mostly white orchard fruit and lemon-lime wisps. The intense and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors exude a bead of minerality on the equally bone-dry linear and crisp finale that is borderline lean today. I suspect though that this will add flesh once in bottle and should age out successfully, particularly since a large proportion is premier cru juice. Drink through 2026+.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Village includes part of the declassified Chalumaux. It has a taut and focused bouquet with lime, citrus peel and a touch of orange rind. The palate is well balanced with good weight, quite a voluminous Puligny with a Chassagne-like finish. Closure: Diam. Drink 2023-2030.

Clear pure colour, a touch more yellow than some. The de Montille 2020 Puligny delivers a beautiful bouquet, with a perfectly judged balance of ripeness, all the aromatics are there while the acidity behind stays good. This is a lovely and persistent example. Bravo.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune and after graduating Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Brilliant pale straw to straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime and green apple mix with wet slate, oyster shell and subtle fresh herb notes. Minerally pear and lime flavours are dispersed across the palate with some oyster shell elements and infusions of fresh herbs lying underneath. River stone like textural feel finishing dry with brisk acidity and a slatey mid length aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
    Alc. 12.5%

Cool and restrained on the nose, there is plenty of precision and class here. Citrus fruits balance the riper hints from some sun-ripened stone fruit. Great purity and plenty of concentration. Very fine Petit Chablis. Pierrick Laroche is behind this Maligny domaine. Taking over from his father and moving away from supplying grapes to La Chablisienne, he produced his first vintage in 2010. Drink 2024-2027.

Fresh white peach and honeysuckle aromas. Hints of gentle pastry and floral blossoms and orchard apples. With layers of fruit and herbs, there are red apples, pears, orange peel and grapefruit, mingled with savoury dry herbs like rosemary and thyme. The wine feels mature, with a hint of cider-like flavours and dominant oak. Drink 2023 - 2025.

Occasionally left unwooded (probably in an effort to compete with Sauvignon Blanc), Chardonnay is more often matured in relatively new oak adding layers of flavour and complexity. While full bodied, heavily wooded expressions go in and out of fashion, the demand for 'buttery' new world styles seems to never wane. Look out for super values from South America and New Zealand. Closer to home, the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Margaret River, Western Australia consistently produce outstanding wines.
