- 2020 Charles Van Canneyt Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$480. 00Bottle$5760.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Cork
Charles Van Canneyt is the current winemaker at the iconic Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Vougeot, but he also produces wine under his own label. Using his extensive contacts with the finest growers in Burgundy, Charles sources grapes from some of the top plots in the area, and makes the wines at a separate facility in Beaune. Charles is aiming for a similar purity and terroir focus as those wines of Hudelot-Noellat, and as such has minimal use of new oak each year.
Les Feusselottes is situated just below the village, surrounding the cemetery, and has perhaps the deepest and richest soils of the Chambolle Premier Cru sites. This shallow, stony soil has a high proportion of limestone, which has long been considered the cause of the mineral characters in the finished wines.

Les Lavrottes is a tiny Premier Cru vineyard just south of Bonnes Mares and is the continuation of the larger Les Noirots site. Chambolle-Musigny as a whole has lighter limestone soils than in the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation to the north, with a much lower proportion of clay. This light, pebbly soil covers the Les Lavrottes vineyard, with hard limestone subsoil beneath. Lighter soils such as this one are often associated with lighter wines. However, a little clay and iron in the soils here gives a little more weight than might usually be expected from Chambolle-Musigny.

2020 Hudelot-Noellat Clos de Vougeot Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
This is also aromatically quite spicy with its combination of ripe and fresh black cherry, leather and warm earth aromas. There is once again excellent density to the big-bodied, equally muscular and quite powerful flavors that possess equally impressive depth and persistence on the very firmly structured and youthfully austere finale. Here too ample patience is advised. Drink from 2040+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundRevealing aromas of plummy fruit mingled with peonies, rose petals, orange rind, exotic spices and incense, the 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and textural, with a deep, concentrated core, bright acids and velvety structuring tannins. Concluding with a long, perfumed finish, it's another classic in the making.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Nine barrels instead of 14 usually (but 5 in 2021). Deep purple with brighter rim. Sturdy stuff on the nose with some black fruit. Mulberry and blackberry, certainly on the lusher side, but this is backed by the familiar Clos Vougeot structure and of course the need to wait ten years. But I would not want this any riper.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA wine with a rich cassis fruit, where mineral and earth notes come through. There is great purity of fruit allied to a superbly silky, voluptuous texture. Hudelot-Noëllat is always among my favourite wines from the Clos. The domaine owns a superb 0.70ha at the top of the slope in the lieux-dits of Chioures and La Garenne. Charles van Canneyt was careful to ensure he didn't over-extract: 'We didn't want to do the 2005 vintage over again,' he says. This year, he has succeeded brilliantly. Drink 2025 - 2060.

Boatrocker Jungle Gin (700ml)Victoria, AUSTRALIA$87. 99Bottle$1055.88 DozenABV: 42%Distilled using fresh makrut (kaffir) lime leaves, ginger, lemongrass and kumquats alongside more traditional ingredients such as juniper, coriander, angelica and orris. Beyond the slightly subdued, citrus-led bouquet, this shows good weight and mouthfeel, with a fresh, spicy vibe throughout that features lime peels, coriander seeds, pepper and gingery warmth. The finish is fresh and feels slightly acidic (more lime juice), true to the key botanicals. Just a few cubes of ice draws out the citrus oils and fluffs up the palate. All said, this one's for lovers of lime and coriander - which makes for a nice point of difference. Try it with a dry tonic garnished with a lime leaf or in citrus-forward cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.

The company's premium shiraz comes in a heavy bottle, cork and wax seal. Built large, this big, ripe shiraz delivers something for everyone. Bursting in ripened plums, licorice, earth, sweet spiced oak, and there's even a waft of eucalypt, too. It's warm and rich to taste, the toasty oak and spice rolling in across a palate of supple tannins. Will definitely build further. Drink by 2034.

2013 Pierre Peters Les Chetillons Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkPierre Peters is a benchmark grower Champagne based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, founded in 1929 by Camille Peters and today run by Rodolphe Peters, farming around 20 hectares of predominantly Chardonnay across Le Mesnil (the core), with additional holdings in Oger, Avize and Cramant, including the famed Les Chetillons parcel acquired in 1930. Viticulture is meticulous, with replanting based on the estate's own massal selections, while vinification is largely in stainless steel (reserve wines held in a mix of steel, large oak and concrete) with partial malolactic fermentation and an emphasis on extended lees ageing to build texture and depth. The range moves from the non-vintage Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Reserve and vintage L'Esprit through to the single-vineyard Le Mesnil bottlings Les Chetillons and Les Montjolys, and concludes with premium multi-vintage cuvees such as Reserve Oubliee (from a perpetual blend dating back to 1988) and L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor, with the house's hallmark being pure, chalk-driven Cote des Blancs Chardonnay built for serious ageing.
Other Reviews....
The 2013 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is outrageously beautiful. I remember tasting it as vin clair in March, 2014. Today, as a finished Champagne from bottle, the 2013 captures all of the intense ripeness and bright acidity that make this vintage so exceptional. A wine of cut and brilliance, the 2013 will thrill readers who enjoy Blanc de Blancs. Citrus, marzipan, slate, crushed rocks and floral notes pulse with tremendous energy. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013. It is a total knock-out. Wow! Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is almost painfully tightly wound today, but what rewards it will offer for the patient! Unfurling in the glass with scents of citrus oil, toasted almonds, buttery pastry, freshly baked bread and crisp yellow apple, it's full-bodied, layered and incisive, with superb concentration and a taut, chiseled profile. Long and penetrating, it concludes with an intensely saline finish. This 2013 vintage, the region's last October harvest, increasingly seems like a vintage that harks back to a past era, and any readers who appreciate classically balanced Champagnes that blossom after two decades' bottle age will want to consider laying down some of this beautiful Les Chétillons. As good as the Chétillons is in 2013, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is even better. In fact, it is the single most impressive Champagne I have ever tasted from Rodolphe Péters. Deep, rich and pliant, the 2013 possesses tremendous depth to play off the searing, bright acids of this late ripening harvest. Light tropical accents add gorgeous nuance to a core of apricot, marzipan and lemon confit. Next to the Chétillons, the Montjolys is richer and creamier. It will be a matter of personal preference as to which wine readers prefer. The Chétillons is taut and focused, while the Montjolys is broader and more vinous. In two separate tastings, I slightly preferred the Montjolys. Both are moving, profound Champagnes. Dosage is 3.5-4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2020.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is lovely, unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, walnuts, green apple, crisp stone fruit and fresh bread. Full-bodied, layered and structured, it's more gourmand and less austere than Les Chétillons but is still a taut, chiseled and notably structural wine that will really repay extended bottle age. As readers will remember, Les Montjolys is a lieu-dit that sits in a small depression where the soils are richer in clay than those of Les Chétillons. Drink 2025-2045.

Never Never Distilling Co. Juniper Freak Gin (500ml)South Australia, AUSTRALIAReduced from $89.99$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 58%[2019 bottling] Made from juniper berries air-freighted from North Macedonia to Adelaide. Other gins come close, but the Freak beats them all when it comes to sheer purity, concentration and flavour definition. Juniper and lemon sorbet plus a touch of cool mint are dialled up to near impossible intensity while the finish fuses fresh pine buds with crushed peppercorns. Brilliantly balanced at Navy Strength, the aftertaste is sustained, deep and invigorating. Just like last years, outrageously good. One of the world's great gins. 58% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Distilled to showcase the annual variations in Macedonian juniper, Juniper Freak utilises juniper from the previous year's harvest. Sourcing fresher juniper and using such concentration, at a higher alcohol content, allows the oils from the juniper to present themselves. This gin is not for the faint-hearted; it’s powerfully robust and has an intensity of concentration unlike most gins. The nose presents with steely, freshly crushed pine needles, and this is where the use of fresher juniper comes in; there's crisper pine and a green apple-like sharpness. The palate is then where the oils come into play, sappy pine wood resembles rich, decadent honey with a rich undertone of warmed juniper. After descending into the depths of juniper oil, the spirit finishes but dries out a little, offering some nuance to the more subtle juniper profile. This year's vintage presents a little dusky rose oil at the end. 95 points - Jess Clayfield, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Very generous wood and menthol nuances still allow the liqueur-like aromas of red currant, violet and range of spice elements to be appreciated. Allen Meadows - BurghoundA wine with huge potential is the 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot). Unwinding in the glass with notes of raspberries, red cherries, vanilla pod, exotic spices and raw cocoa, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with an immensely concentrated core, powdery tannins and a tightly wound profile. This will be among the slowest to evolve of all the wines in the cellar, and also among the most long-lived.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. This is very impressive and bloomin’ delicious (already!) Drink 2026-2065.

Neal Martin - VinousThe wine is massive, with grippy tannins, full body and an interminable finish. 'A great vintage to taste in 20 years,' according to winemaker Frédéric Barnier. The 0.27ha Jadot parcel (owned by the house itself) is in a strip that goes from the top of the vineyard to the bottom, and thus includes both terres blanches (white marl) and terres rouges (red clay). The fruit character is black plum and cassis, with a firm, mineral and earthy element. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Mouzon Leroux L'incandescent Rose de Saignee Extra Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $160.00$145. 00Bottle$1740.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkSébastien Mouzon is a dynamic, ninth-generation grower producing exciting and terroir driven wines at his domaine, Mouzon-Leroux. Based in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, Sébastien farms eight hectares of vines spread across 60 separate plots. While much of the vineyard area is planted to Pinot Noir, there are additional small parcels planted to the remaining six varietals legally allowed in Champagne; Chardonnay, Arbane, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier and Petit Meslier. Aiming to bring further translation of site to his wines, Sébastien works with very low yields in his certified organic vineyards, with fermentation and élevage then completed in a mix of steel tanks and older 500L barrels. Sulphur additions are also kept to a minimum.
L'incandescent is true to its name, displaying a vibrant hue thanks to a short maceration on skins before pressing. The exact time on skins is dependant on taste rather than colour, and varies between 8-36 hours, with the current disgorgement coming in at 22 hours. This is 100% Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru lieu-dit of Les Cumaines, and was vinified entirely in stainless steel, before spending 30 months on lees and disgorged with just 1.5 g/L dosage.
Other Reviews....
Says non vintage but is made of 2018 wine only. Pinot noir that sees 16 hours of maceration. Younger gen, but from multi-gen family, producer.
Very dark coloured and vinous style. Almost like looking at Etna Rosato! Supple texture, almost silky, bubbles are really fine and gentle, almost missing but for lifting the wine brightly and some saline tang alongside all this. Rich, red fruited, some truffle notes, briar and brambles. What a cool wine! Really interesting and complex, is the message. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Paul John Pedro Ximenez Select Cask Single Malt Indian Whisky (700ml)INDIAReduced from $169.99$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 48%For their Select Cask series, Paul John in Goa has created a pair of malts finished in different sherry casks. This particular edition was allowed a period in Pedro Ximénez casks, so if you like the thought of dried fruits mixed in with some cakey notes, you should find plenty to like here - starting with the bouquet. Packed with dried peels, raisins, fruit slice and dark chocolate, the palate shares the same appealing bittersweet quality (it's not as sweet as you might anticipate). Fruit mince pie, tangy peels and ginger bread are the keynotes through to the cocoa-laced aftertaste. Trace sulphur too. Adding water tends to flatten the profile, so this is one whisky where its qualities are best uncut. The high ABV boosts the bang for your buck. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Cocktail enthusiasts, this is for you. Maraschino cherries that are actually soaked in alcoholic maraschino. It's a dose of tradition with a modern twist. White Possum add a lick of sugar and a dash of almond oil to the liqueur before infusing this 'pickling liquid' into the heart of every cherry. The cherries are macerated for several weeks and will continue to develop in flavour while they're in the jar. These are stemless cherries. Each jar contains approximately 50% cherries to 50% alcoholic pickling liquid. Please be mindful that despite best efforts there may occasionally be pits inside, so take care. No artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. Vegan friendly. Gluten free. 20% Alc./Vol.
- Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 25%
The duo of Tom Baker and Phillip Moore have developed a bespoke method of distilling coffee at their Distillery Botanica, located at Erina, near Gosford in Sydney. Sourcing from Glee Coffee Roasters nearby the distillery has been key to the quality of the final product. ”Working with the local roaster we can talk to them about what's working, different flavour profiles, how dark we want the roast. So having a local supplier really helps,” says Baker, whose also the creator and distiller.
The liqueur employs the cold drip method of brewing coffee. “We find it gives a richer and sweeter flavour and keeps its integrity,” explains Baker. "The control of oxygen (“the enemy of good coffee”) is fundamental to the process. From the day the coffee is roasted, it comes straight to the distillery. It’s then ground and goes straight into a water and alcohol bath that has all the oxygen removed using nitrogen,” says Baker. “It’s quite involved, but the result of getting all the oxygen out of it means you never get a stale coffee flavour.”
Tasting note: [BATCH 005 tasted] Opaque deep burnt umber colour with sienna brown edges shows some viscosity. Top note is just-opened-coffee-bag-fresh over heavier aromas of cocoa and cafe creme. After several minutes in the glass the vibrancy drops a notch and the aroma shifts towards bitter dark chocolate. Creamy textured, light to medium bodied palate presents with rich mocha, vanilla and dark chocolate flavours rounded off by a very gently bitter finish to balance. Semi sweet coffee and caramel aftertaste. A judiciously poised and authentic addition to the genre. 25% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… Dark and dense. Intense, rich, freshly ground coffee simply percolates into the nose. It is almost all coffee except for a fine vanilla edge. Just enough sugar to make it slightly sweet and balance the bitterness of the coffee. Coffee still dominant and like extra strong, when freshly brewed. Vanilla note still at the very end. A great way to have your coffee.

Hervé Souhaut is one of a kind, producing some of the most lithe, perfumed, and exuberant wines from the Rhone. He and his wife converted the cellars of her parents' centuries-old hunting lodge into the winery and now draw on four parcels of vines totaling 8.5 acres in Saint Joseph, as well as 20 additional acres of Vin de Pays vineyards on the plateau, planted primarily to Gamay, Roussanne and Viognier. The AOC wines are labeled under Souhaut's name, while the Vin de Pays cuvées are named Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet, in homage to the name of her parents' estate combined with Béatrice's family name.
The methods of Jules Chauvet are followed here, which is to say grapes are hand-harvested and then the whole bunches undergo a pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature. Fermentation follows using natural yeasts in wooden and concrete tanks – the wine is then aged on fine lees in seasoned oak casks for eight to twelve months. Following that there is just a teeny dose of sulfur at bottling, which is done without filtration.
Recently a new wine came into play due to inheritance, a super parcel of red Saint-Joseph in the lieu-dit Les Cessieux is born. This joins the established and iconic Saint-Joseph Sainte Épine (from vines over 100 years old) and together they are the jewels in the crown at this estate.

Grenache, shiraz, mourvèdre, grown in Ferguson Valley, a beautiful part of Geographe. The riper profile of this wine is evident in the mouth, prompting a quick check of the alcohol. However as grenache has the propensity to run with the sun and lean towards muscly tannins and a raspberry-lolly character in the mouth, all is well with the wine. It is beautiful in fact: plush, floral, sweet and shapely. The tannins are woven through the fruit, structuring the wine and driving it through the finish. Drink by 2028.

Cabernet from Geographe has a really generous chocolate character that is woven through the blackcurrant and cassis fruit. It makes for pleasurable drinking. Add to that a whack of malbec and the resulting wine is floral, satisfying, elegant and delicious. Great effort. Drink by 2031.

2017 Colgin CariadNapa Valley, California, UNITED STATES$1199. 00Bottle$14388.00 DozenABV: 14.9%Closure: CorkIn the world of heavily allocated, cult Napa Valley producers, Colgin is in the top tier competing with the likes of Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate. Colgin produce wines in tiny quantities and with most of their bottles taken up by those lucky enough to be on their private mailing list, or by select restaurants in the US, Europe and Asia; these wines are rarely offered for sale at retail.

Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cariad displays a very deep purple-black color. It bursts from the glass with an immediately compelling first waft of blueberry compote, plum preserves, licorice and fertile loam with emerging hints of candied violets, mossy tree bark, oolong tea and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is surprisingly elegant with a firm backbone of ripe, finely pixilated tannins and bold freshness, featuring all the black fruit layers suggested on the nose arranged with beautiful composure, finishing very long on a provocative iron ore note. Drink 2024 - 2054.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Nov 2019)Colgin's 2017 Cariad opens with captivating aromatics and tons of sheer presence. In 2017, the Cariad has less Merlot than is typical, while the Franc is on the higher side - a combination that gives the wine much of its lift and overall feel. Racy and nuanced to the core, Cariad is endowed with a feeling of soaring intensity that is hard to fully describe. It is another positively brilliant wine in this range of 2017s from Colgin. Drink 2025-2037.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThis is really mesmerizing to taste with plums, currants, turmeric and nutmeg on the nose and palate. Some juniper, too. Turns to mineral and stone. Pure fruit. James SucklingA blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2017 Cariad is another sensational wine from Allison Tauziet. It offers a beautiful blue fruit character as well as plenty of violets, tobacco, dark chocolate, and gravelly earth. This beauty is full-bodied, incredibly pure and focused, brilliantly balanced, and has a great, great finish. It needs a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and, as with the Tychson Hill, I suspect will still be drinking beautifully at age 30. Drink 2024 - 2054.

Much like the Vaulorent, the nose instantly confirms with conviction that this could be from nowhere else but Chablis with its airy array of citrus rind, sea breeze, quinine and smoky green fruit aromas. There is excellent size, weight and richness to the broad-shouldered yet sleek flavors if not nearly the same refinement on the powerful and driving finish. This even more firmly structured effort is impressive as well, though with an entirely different texture. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundUnwinding in the glass with aromas of peach, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, oyster shell and struck match, Fèvre's 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is full-bodied, concentrated and incisive, with a racy, electric profile and a searingly saline, intensely penetrating finish of striking persistence. This is a terrific Valmur that will merit at least a decade's patience to reveal all its considerable potential. Drink 2030 - 2050.

Aromas of quinine, essence of wet stone and seashore add breadth to the nose of pear, apple and anise. Once again there is fine density and intensity to the mouthcoating medium-weight flavors that flash outstanding length on the bracingly saline-suffused finale. 2019 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del SorboTuscany, ITALY$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
This iconic wine has all new energy, as it is now part of an exciting set of potential Gran Selezione wines made at Fontodi. Two new portfolio additions (Pastrolo from cool climate Lamole and Terrazze San Leonlino from Panzano) help to give greater context to the organic 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo. This wine of course benefits from many years of experience, and the Vigna del Sorbo identity is well established. But soil geeks will absolutely enjoy comparing Vigna del Sorbo from schistous galestro soils to the limestone alternative found in Terrazze San Leonlino. I tend to lean toward Vigna del Sorbo thanks to those etched mineral notes of pencil shaving and iron ore that I find so appealing. Those dusty notes are amply rounded off by sweet cherry fruit, plum and spice. Rising alcohol can be a problem in sun-drenched Panzano, and the winey team is leaving taller growth on the vines in the summer to cast shade and taking other active measures to combat this issue. Drink 2024-2050.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a potent, virile wine endowed with tremendous depth and equally imposing tannins. A blast of dark fruit, herbs, chocolate, menthol and spice races out of the glass. Large-scaled tannins and hints of rusticity suggest the 2019 won’t be one of the most finessed Sorbos, but it is a fine effort for the year. Drink 2025-2044.

Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorAt an elevation of 400 metres, Vigna del Sorbo boasts Chianti Classico’s classic Galestro soil. The warm southwest-facing vineyard typically yields a powerful, intense wine in need of ageing. The 2019 demonstrates all the wild, penetrating characteristics of this site but it comes into harmony quickly, revealing its balance and precision. Wood-driven top notes of smoke and vanilla meld into pressed violets, rosemary and liquorice. Luscious red cherry and dark plum flesh are wrapped in long, layered chalky tannins. Across the palate there's an energetic beam of unwavering acidity, giving the wine a linear feel. The finish reverberates with fennel and crushed stone. Drink 2026 - 2042.

2019 Fontodi Flaccianello della PieveTuscany, ITALY$285. 00Bottle$3420.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another stunning wine that sums up the character of the vintage and reflects the sun-drenched beauty of its quintessentially Tuscan surroundings. Giovanni Manetti and his team have two new important wines in the works, but Flaccianello remains an old love and a wine that hits the highest marks for quality consistency vintage after vintage. I tasted this wine next to the 100-point 2016 vintage for friendly comparison, and perhaps the main difference is that the tannins are finer and more accessible in this bottle. It offers rich concentration and layers of dark fruit that wrap thickly over the senses. Tannin management is an active pursuit. Time in barrique has been reduced over the years in favor of a final six-month resting period in larger oak casks. In fact, the barrel room was recently enlarged to give more room to these bigger vessels. The 2019 vintage recalls the balance of 2001 with the freshness of 2013. However, 2019 is more profound. Drink 2024-2050.

Monica Larner - Robert Parker's The Wine AdvocateThe 2019 Flaccianello della Pieve is another potent wine from Fontodi in this vintage. That said, it has more than enough mid-palate heft and overall intensity to balance its equally imposing tannins. Black cherry, mocha, licorice, lavender, spice and tobacco fill out the layers. Belvedere Vodka from Polmos Zyrardow is crafted from 100% Polish rye, distilled four times and charcoal filtered. Easily recognised by its innovative packaging, the bottle depicts the Belvedere House, the Polish equivalent to the White House, the official residence of the Polish president in Warsaw. The question is does the impressive packaging match its quality? Reviews vacillate from average to very good. Desmond Begg in the 'The Vodka Companion' had this to say about it: 'Strong whiff of toffee on the nose. Sweet and cloying on the palate with strong caramelization. Some alcohol burn. Powerful finish in which toffee flavor predominates. This is an indifferently distilled vodka.'

Ardnamurchan AD/ Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 46.8%The latest release from Ardnamurchan is also their first core range bottling. Simply named "AD/", the batch numbers have been removed, with a redesigned front label featuring the Ardnamurchan lighthouse. 25,200 bottles are on offer worldwide - which sounds like a lot - but it's allocated in Australia. We've grabbed as much as we could. The whisky remains an equal split between peated and unpeated spirit, with 65% bourbon cask and 35% sherry maturation.
Building on the profile of previous editions, AD/ is something akin to Ardmore-meets-young Talisker with a splash of Ledaig thrown in for added depth. The first sniff finds grapefruit, citrus, pepper and saline to the fore with a fabulous coastal / low-key peaty drift that develops as rock-pools then earthier, farmyard notes of lucerne mulch and lanolin. You realise there’s something a bit special about AD/ at first taste; mostly, it's the remarkably sprightly nature of the delivery. It's also relatively dry by Highland standards, so you have to roll it around your mouth to extract more of the fruity malt sweetness (strange as it sounds, winter strawberries come to mind). Vivacious, briney and minerally, with sugar sprinkled grapefruit to finish, some bitter dark chocolate too, AD/ is easily one of the more complex young malts money can buy and a whisky that truly conveys a sense of place - the fact that they’ve already nailed a very distinctive style in itself seems like a near impossible achievement. 46.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Notes from the producers... Nose - Toasted marshmallows on a pebbled Fascadale beach, minerals, orange oil and popcorn. Palate - Salted popcorn, smores, pebble beach, mineralic, sea salt, briney, lime cordial, charred marshmallows, bitter orange, dark chocolate, smoky old fashioned cocktail.

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2019)The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. Released in late 2021 in the USA as the Winter 2021 Master’s Collection edition, Woodford Reserve Five-Malt Stouted Mash is made using distillers malt, wheat malt, pale chocolate malt, Carafa 1 malt and kiln coffee malt. For Master Distiller Chris Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, the whiskey is a take on crafting a spirit that references the traditional heavy-style dark beer (although it's not 100% clear what makes it 'stouted'). “It's an expression unlike any other we’ve released before,” Morris said. “The rich, roasted malty stout flavors mingle with bright touches of baked fruit, crisp spices, and orange zest for a unique Woodford Reserve experience.” This year’s Master's Collection expression marks the 17th release in the series and is available in limited volumes across select global markets. 45.2% Alc./Vol

JamesSuckling.com (November 2022)The 2019 Koomilya GT Shiraz is sourced from a vineyard site that Steve has been working with since his Hardy's days, and he’s liked it since that time. Planted on silty loam, the thrust here is to make Shiraz simply, that of place. This is supple and powerful, with the tannins spread through the mouth, like rivers through the fruit. Great wine is about great grapes. These Koomilya Shiraz wines (GT, DC and JC) are all made the same in order to preface and promote the variation and diversity of the sites: handpicked, 20% whole bunches in the wild ferments, low sulfur. Really excellent—delicious. This has concentrated fruit and id is spicy and vibrant, as so many 2020s seem to be. There is life here. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (September 2022)The old property is serviced with bio-char and layers in a lot of regenerative agriculture that aims to reintroduce lots of native species into the farm. The GT block is 31 year old vines grafted from gewurztraminer to shiraz, ‘GT stands for grafted or gewurztraminer’, says Steve Pannell in his press release, but I go to famed mid-to-late 90s DJ and music producer, GrooveTerminator, when I see the initials. Almost a third is whole bunch fermented here, and 20% new oak used. Also, this is beautiful drinking right now.
There’s a freshness and lift to the wine despite the concentration and layering of dark fruit, woody spice and general inkiness. The character of gewurz seems omnipresent despite no gewurz here – it’s floral and pretty shiraz, flirty and quite notably silky, more soft in the shiraz spectrum and red fruited inflections chime in with plum and dark, forest berry fruits. A lick of cola and char here but the wine floats and swishes on velvety tannins and finishes extremely long and fine. Drink 2022 - 2030+

These Koomilya Block wines (GT, DC and JC) are all made the same way in order to preface and promote the variation and diversity of the sites: handpicked, 20% whole bunches in the wild ferments, low sulfur. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (September 2022)A very unique site tucked away between thatches of native forest and fringed by other old vine properties. The DC Block vines are 47 years old. There’s 20% new oak employed here. A formidable and important project from Steve Pannell. The 2019 shiraz of McLaren Vale have a bit more dry reddiness as a thing, and there’s some of that here, but the tannin and potency surpasses that.
It’s highly perfumed, so rich and ripe, inky plummy fruit characters, brined black olive and a strong overlay of cedar, mahogany and clove. The palate is similarly generous and rich, plush and impenetrable, tightens on train tracks of cedary, firm and long ribbons of tannin and overall it feels succulent despite the heft and concentration. Formidable wine here, a quibble on how oak interplays in dryness with dryer spectrum fruit characters, but there’s a hugely impressive wine in the glass regardless. Drink 2022 - 2035+

Ruby-tawny hue; a strong whiff of volatility and spiritous, but the palate compensates admirably. Aged balsamic vinegar, brittle toffee, coffee and chocolate licorice and aniseed balls. Lemony acidity cuts through the richness, the palate tight and bright. 500ml.

Enough wood to notice surrounds the equally ripe aromas of mocha, black raspberry and spicy poached plum. The super-sleek, dense and wonderfully energetic medium-bodied flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that helps to buffer the firm tannins shaping the youthfully austere, chiseled and sneaky long finish. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundIf the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lovely spicy bouquet with clove and white pepper scents infusing the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, taut and crisp, quite spicy and grippy towards the finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousAnother black colour with purple rim. The bouquet wants to offer some elegance despite the massive concentration of the vintage. Succulent dark raspberry, a glossy character also on the palate, firmer tannins behind for sure. Medium plus length and the useful acidity which picks out points of red fruit.

2020 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundCropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, rose petals, plums, raw cocoa and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a long, fragrant finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru has a lively dark cherry, cranberry and mint-scented bouquet with light figgy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a little chewiness on the entry but there is fine acidity and a cohesive peppery finish. It seems to firm up in the glass, implying it will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousUpfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comAbsolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time!

2020 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$1250. 00Bottle$15000.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. Excellent. Drink from 2035+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundOpening in the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries, cassis, orange rind, rich spices, loamy soil, black truffles and toasty new oak, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a rich, enveloping core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's a terrific wine in the making.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.

Neal Martin - VinousDeep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comPurchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyProduced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

Cape Byron The Original Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$129. 99Bottle$1559.88 DozenABV: 47%Co-created by one of Scotland’s most awarded Master Distillers, Jim McEwan, together with Cape Byron Distillery Co-founder and distiller Eddie Brook are two new Australian takes on a classic Scottish single malt. Many readers will already know of Jim McEwan who has more than fifty years of experience in the whisky business, having worked at Bowmore for 38 years, before overseeing the rebirth of Bruichladdich and most recently helping to get new Islay distillery, Ardnahoe, off the ground.
Two editions are on offer: A Chardonnay barrelled limited edition, and this, the Cape Byron 'Original', aged in Scotland's traditional vessel of choice: American oak x-Bourbon casks. Says Brook, “They go together like a match made in heaven. [The whisky is] not overly dominated by the oak, it’s letting the spirit sing, and we’re seeing this marriage.”
What partly accounts for the distinctive style is that the pair have resisted the temptation to use smaller barrels to ‘accelerate’ the ageing process. It's the opposite approach of most Australian distillers. “...We’ve got this climate that gives us faster maturation. Now that’s great, but it can also get too much, you can get too much tannin and then over-oaking in your whisky,” Brook explains. "To avoid this, we only mature in full format barrels, between 200 to 300 litres in size". Specially designed warehousing facilities further offset Byron’s temperature extremes.
According to McEwan, another factor is the distillery's proximity to the coast. “Walk down the barrel room... you’re getting that marine character and influence coming through" he says. "That moisture is falling on the oak staves, and slowly but surely, there’ll be a residue of salt and eventually as the whisky moves in and out, as the temperature increases, the alcohol will expand and it will touch the salt, and pull it back, and that brings a unique marine freshness to the spirit – quite different from anything else...”
No surprise that McEwan reckons fans of Bruichladdich might taste some similarities in the Cape Byron spirit. “They’re not dissimilar. There’s no peat, [Eddie’s] using American oak, I used a lot of American oak Bourbon casks as well. I’ve used wine casks – and you’ve got all the wine casks there. There’s a similarity there between what I was doing in Islay and what Eddie’s doing here."
As for the taste? Can't say there are many like this - either here or abroad - but you can appreciate why McEwen draws comparisons with Bruichladdich. Cape Byron's Original is a creamy, near voluptuous malt that defies its age. Peaches and cream come through with sweet barley and shortbread on the nose. The co-mingling of dried mango and juicy malt with the Bourbon vanilla aspects is nicely done, and there's a spicy edge adding vibrancy. At the finish, more peaches and cream, dried mango and a little grilled pineapple, pepper and coastal freshness develop. It's a whisky less about overt complexity, all about generous mouthfeel and precocious flavour. No doubt that equation will change over time. Right now, the creative forces behind the project have guaranteed one of the more compelling Aussie releases in recent years. Matured for three years in 200 litre ex-Buffalo Trace Bourbon casks. 47% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 001 tasted.
Notes from the producers... The colour of a Byron Bay sunset. The palate offers soft vanilla, creme brulee and biscotti characters, layered over distinct notes of pear, coconut and buttery macadamia.
