2020 Domaine Bernard Gripa Saint-Joseph Parady
    Saint Joseph, Northern Rhone, FRANCE
    $150. 00
    Bottle
    $1800.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Domaine Bernard Gripa own sixteen hectares of vineyards, based primarily around Mauves in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. While Bernard is still assisting at the winery, it is his son Fabrice that now directs the winemaking activities for the family. Fabrice and his team work the steep and challenging terrain of the vineyards, which unusually for the area are planted half to white grapes and half to red grapes. Much of the vineyard holdings are old vines averaging 65 years of age, with some vineyards over 80 years old. In addition to Saint-Joseph, the Gripa family also own 3.5 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne in white-grape-only appellation of Saint-Péray.

Parady is sourced from a relatively new planting of Syrah (2001) from the 1.2 hectares plot of Paradis in Mauves. Like all the top wines from Domaine Bernard Gripa, the vines are planted solely on the granite soil terraces famous in the area.

Deep, dark purple. Powerful dark berry liqueur, candied violet, cracked pepper and licorice scents, along with hints of olive paste, espresso and smoky minerals. Offers deep, palate-staining boysenberry, cherry liqueur, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors that show superb depth and are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Opens up steadily with air and finishes wonderfully long and spicy, with reverberating minerality, mounting tannins and lingering smokiness. 25% whole clusters and 20% new oak. Drink 2028-2039.

Hervé Souhaut is one of a kind, producing some of the most lithe, perfumed, and exuberant wines from the Rhone. He and his wife converted the cellars of her parents' centuries-old hunting lodge into the winery and now draw on four parcels of vines totaling 8.5 acres in Saint Joseph, as well as 20 additional acres of Vin de Pays vineyards on the plateau, planted primarily to Gamay, Roussanne and Viognier. The AOC wines are labeled under Souhaut's name, while the Vin de Pays cuvées are named Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet, in homage to the name of her parents' estate combined with Béatrice's family name.

The methods of Jules Chauvet are followed here, which is to say grapes are hand-harvested and then the whole bunches undergo a pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature. Fermentation follows using natural yeasts in wooden and concrete tanks – the wine is then aged on fine lees in seasoned oak casks for eight to twelve months. Following that there is just a teeny dose of sulfur at bottling, which is done without filtration.

The iconic Saint-Joseph Sainte Épine hails from vines over 100 years old and is the jewel in the crown at this estate. It's a wine of contemplation and inspiration displaying Syrah’s nobility and virility alongside myriad exquisite fragrances and the superfine texture that are the hand of the maker. Something very rare indeed and will repay careful cellaring handsomely.

Dunnet Bay Distillers Rock Rose Navy Strength Gin (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $130. 00
    Bottle
    $1560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

Other reviews... Dunnet Bay Distillers’ Rock Rose Gin is the latest entry into the increasingly crowded Scottish gin market — where more than 170 different gins are currently in production. The brand dates back to 2014, the result of 55 experiments to find the right botanical blend. The final recipe is an exotic mix that includes juniper, rose root, sea buckthorn, rowan berries (aka mountain ash), blueberries, cardamon, coriander seed, and verbena. As near as I can tell, there’s no difference between this and the Original Edition, save the abv. At 57% alcohol, it’s no joke, and my complaints about the weak body are wholly inapplicable here. Rock Rose Navy Strength is sharp both on the nose and the tongue, which gives the fruitier character more room to shine. The juniper and other herbal notes are pushed more toward the back end, so while the attack lets the citrus shine, the finish of the Navy Strength feels more verdant than the Original Edition. Over time, things get quite bitter as it lingers on the back of the palate. Naturally, it’s also much stronger with the punch of alcohol, which presents its own challenge (or promise). 57% Alc./Vol. - drinkhacker.com

2007 Morrison Distillers Old Perth Vintage Collection Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 56.7%

From one of Scotland's oldest whisky families, previous owners of Bowmore, Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch. The Morrison family purchased the Old Perth brand and brought the legacy back to life for all to enjoy. This 2007 vintage blended malt is a small batch release of only 1292 bottles created using whiskies from the Glenlivet region, 100% drawn from sherry casks. Australia's allocation is all of 30 bottles! 56.7% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Notes from the importers... While the alcohol is obvious on the nose, so is the quality of these sherry casks! Orange peel, raisins, stewed apricots, a deft touch of rancio, alongside ginger, dark chocolate, forest floor & leather notes. The palate is more than rich enough to handle the 56.7% ABV. Cinnamon and clove spices, join the mix. Texturally this veers comfortably into a silky oiliness. An extremely long finish! Wow!

Poli Marconi 42 Mediterranean Gin (700ml)
    ITALY
    $110. 00
    Bottle
    $1320.00 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

This is the second gin to be released by the Poli distillery, located north of the Veneto region, otherwise known for their first class grappas. Distillation in a vacuum bain-marie pot still ensures the herbal botanicals are infused as delicately and slowly as possible. Initially, the bouquet offers lemon and lime juice before taking a more interesting path through a garden of fresh thyme, apple mint, basil, juniper and crushed eucalyptus leaves. Despite being just 42% the palate carries good body and mouthfeel; the medley of sweet herbs accents basil and rosemary followed by citrus zest, eucalyptus and coriander. There's also a pleasant peppery note on the back palate to sustain the finish. Juniper doesn't feature, but that doesn't detract from what is a complex, invigorating contemporary style where the herbal botanicals get the loudest say. Recommended in a Vesper or Tom Collins. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Unsurprisingly, the nose is quite aromatic. However, what is surprising is that it is not as juniper-forward as expected. It is quite sharp and medicinal at first, but eventually finds it way into herbal territory, with coriander, a hint of juniper elderflower, and muted juniper. A palate of mixed garden herbs, basil, and sage dominate the beginning of the palate, but then the mint takeover begins. The finish is long and immensely enjoyable, with the minty menthol sensation leading the charge before cardamom and rosemary provide muted relief near the end. Incredibly savory and immensely herbal, this will challenge even the staunchest of gin enthusiasts to find fault with it, though I’m sure someone will. In my estimation, this rates as one of the better gins I’ve enjoyed in quite some time. - drinkhacker.com

2012 Benromach Contrasts Air Dried Oak Virgin Cask Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The second in Benromach's limited edition series investigating drying methods is this ten-year-old bottling matured in air dried Virgin Oak barrels. A cooperage will usually air-dry lumber for a period lasting a few months to a few years, depending on the oak species, its moisture content and its future use. This process not only allows the moisture to evaporate from the wood gradually, preventing any cracking or splitting, but also lets any tannins and other unwanted compounds in the wood break down. In this example, focusing exclusively on air-dried oak brings sweet vanilla fudge aromas and smooth yet peppery flavours of vanilla, fresh peppermint, oak and subtle smoke. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... The idea is to showcase different methods of drying the oak before making barrels, and their organoleptic effects. In this specific case, the planks were air-dried for 36 months, which seems to be the most traditional method in coopering for whisky. Naturally, this is first-fill 'virgin' oak. Colour: gold. Nose: well, you do feel the oak, its spices, especially curry powders, cinnamon, paprika, nutmeg, as well as a lot of pencil shavings. All this is certainly pretty different, but very pleasant too, while it seems to me that they've used some gentler distillate. Then we find the usual softer custard and caramel cream, crème brûlée and so on. Mouth: great fun, this is totally oak-driven, but the sweet spiciness is working extremely well. Bananas stewed in cinnamon sauce, with more nutmeg and curry. In other words, bananas flambéed in India (ha!) Finish: medium, all on sweet spices and some cedarwood that gives it a mentholy and piney profile in the end. Comments: not sure whether this was full maturing or matured in virgin oak for three years or a little more, but I'm rather fond of the results, even if they remain a tad 'too modern' for this traditionalist (*). 83 points - whiskyfun.com

Isle of Harris The Hearach First Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Highlands, SCOTLAND

    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

"...a singular style. It must be increasingly challenging to find one's own style with all these new distilleries around. Thumb up; and the bottle's reaaaaally lovely." - whiskyfun.com

Built in 2015, the Isle of Harris distillery recently released its inaugural single malt. Up until now, the project has been limited to the hugely popular Isle of Harris Gin - now into its millionth bottle. Named 'The Hearach' meaning 'Native', the single malt is showing early signs of similar success. The first batches were snapped up from online UK retailers. According to a fan on whiskybase.com, "...[the distillery] used Highland Park 12yo as their inspiration and they’ve nailed it. Slightly Smokey, slightly sweet and a very easy & smooth drink." Key production specs include 100% Scottish Concerto barley lightly peated at 12-15ppm using peat cut by hand at 'Cleite Mhòr', an area of South Harris, a long fermentation that runs for up to five days, as well as maturation for at least five years in three cask types: Fino butts, first-fill bourbon, and oloroso sherry casks. Because conditions for growing grains on Harris aren’t ideal, the barley gets shipped from the Black Isle in north-west Scotland. Water is sourced from the island and is reported to be some of the softest in all of Scotland.

Managing Director, Simon Erlanger, who was previously an executive director for Glenmorangie comments, “We set out to create complexity and character, and that takes time. On first sip or smell, it’s a lovely, sweet, delicious whisky with a hint of smoke at the end. But each time you come back to the glass, you discover different things. People might expect an Island malt style, quite full-bodied and peaty, but we’re not that. We’re not really Speyside style either. It’s an Isle of Harris whisky. We’re just are who we are.”

Head distiller, Norman Ian Mackay adds “We tightly control everything. We’re very strict on our wood policy. The whisky’s all matured in warehouses on Harris. The whole process, including bottling, happens on the island. We’re not doing anything the easy way. If investors wanted to make money quickly from whisky, they wouldn’t do it in the middle of the Atlantic.”

The Australian importer has secured stocks of batch No.2 of the first release, labelled as such on the cap seal. We received a 30ml sample. It's one of a growing number of Scottish upstarts that takes your palate by surprise. Firstly, it's more peaty than you might expect, but in a way that shouldn't be off-putting to people who normally shy away from smokey whiskies. Instead of a maritime blast, the phenols are like sweet wood smoke with sprinklings of white chocolate. Secondly, the malt is already beautifully expressive and, yes, comparisons to the honeyed, medium-peated character of Highland Park or perhaps, Glenglassaugh Portsoy are not without justification. The length is decent for such a youngster, rounding off with toasty oak, citrus, hints of salted crackers and a delicious thread of something sweeter. With an outturn of around 13,000 bottles per batch, as a first edition, this may appeal to forward-thinking collectors. Like the Isle of Harris gin, the presentation of 'The Hearach' is a highlight: A stout but very stylish bespoke bottle designed by Stranger & Stranger, detailed with a fine 'ribbed' texture. The whisky comes bottled at 46% without chill filtration.

Other reviews... The Isle of Harris Distillery’s debut is a marvelous dram with aromas of sweet orange peel, lime zest, pear, heathery peat smoke, vanilla, jellied candy, and floral top notes. The concoction has sweet fruity notes, citrus, gentle smokiness, and flavors of grapefruit, lime Jell-O, vanilla, honey, pepper, and subtle sherry, becoming rich and creamier with vanilla fudge, stone fruits, walnut, and cacao, ending with a pleasantly spicy finish. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Already a star on social media, apparently, thanks to a very carefully chosen bottle that'll be very successful on the shelves of the most exclusive department stores in London, Paris, or New York. Okay, and in Tokyo, Berlin, Milan, Madrid, Montreal… … and John o' Groats. Perhaps not John o'Groats. Right, and they are 'social', and they make gin. The whisky is lightly peated (15ppm) and aged in bourbon, oloroso and fino. Colour: pale white wine. Young distilleries no longer seem to use any caramel. Nose: classic bready start, some porridge, sourdough, rennet, garden peat, then green olives, which I just always love. It's almost as if they had let some olives swim in the casks, or macerate in the wash. Mouth: it's peatier on the palate and it's got a very distinct style. You'd say 30ppm rather than just 15, really. This one too is pretty ashy, in fact, but there's a fermentary depth (see what I mean) that's adding, well, some depth. Notes of pickled lemons, more olives, small gherkins… Finish: rather long, with lemons chiming in, which always works. Oh and a little gin, haha. Comments: singular style. It must be increasingly challenging to find one's own style with all these new distilleries around. Thumb up; and the bottle's reaaaaally lovely. 86 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers on BATCH NO HE 00002 23... “At first, I smell clean oak smoke like the curing smokehouses in the village I grew up in Poland. There’s a spiciness and a sweetness, like smoke dried prunes which not many people from Harris will know. There’s heather, like the fragrance from the hills when I’m out taking photographs. When I drink it, there’s more sweetness and creaminess like a creme brûlée and I taste freshly picked green apples, very sharp. There’s a gentle saltiness, like licking your lips after walking on one of our windy beaches. The finish is long and smoky. When I first moved to the island I would drive around in winter with the windows down just to get a beautiful whiff of peat fires burning, now I can find it in my glass.” - Peter Kwasniewski, Drinishader, Isle of Harris.

From a single site at Seville Estate planted in 1996; 30% whole bunches and matured in seasoned French puncheons. The product of a cool year, this was picked during the first week of April, meaning the fruit had plenty of hang time. It shows in the wine too. A fabulous, deep, bright, crimson purple. Densely packed with dark fruits, black peppercorns, olive tapenade and some intriguing iodine notes. A rich but balanced mouthful; juicy, yet structured. Fine, long-chained tannins round out a super wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for at least another 10 years. Drink by 2032.

Already a favourite among the small number who have had the opportunity to try it, Overeem's Bourbon cask matured cask strength edition has been on Jane Overeem's watch since she first tasted it in early 2022. It ups the ante on the lower strength equivalent with a full-throttle malty attack, middle-of-the-range sweetness and a brawny, warming finish. There's no question you're drinking high-strength whisky. Limited to around 140 bottles. Tasted from a 20ml sample. 60% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... Nose: Creamy & rich, great balance and harmony between spirit and cask, subtle layers of citrus, vanilla and coconut. Palate: Charred pineapple, caramelized apple and banana with soft vanilla and citrus notes, malt driven with soft oak and spice. Finish: Delicious summer cocktails, Pina Colada! Creamy and lingering with a zippy finish, very, very yum.

A markedly more restrained nose grudgingly reveals its array of green apple, lemon rind, wet stone and a variety of spice wisps. There is outstanding size, weight and power to the intensely stony big-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, tightly wound, very dry and youthfully austere finale. This possesses excellent development potential that should allow it to repay at least a decade of keeping. With that said, it's not so backward that it couldn't be approached after 5 or so years. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, the only cuvée that was not bottled when I tasted it, has a well-defined bouquet with crushed rock filtering through the citrus fruit, kernals of orange rind and litchi. The palate is well balanced with an aniseed tinged entry, good depth and vibrancy with a dash of spice, stem ginger, on the finish. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.

Recently racked, not yet on finings, so a little bit unclear to the eye as the lees still in suspension. Something of everything on the nose, a touch of tangerine, a little bit of biscuit barrel. A significant weight of fruit, a good thread of mineral acidity, a little more opulence in fruit profile. A little higher in alcohol perhaps.

The 2020 Meursault Cuvée Tête de Murger has a well-defined nose, although I was expecting a little more presence and energy compared to previous vintages that I have tasted over the years. Just give it some time for the aromatics to open. Drink 2023-2036.

A cool, pure and restrained nose reflects airy and elegant notes of acacia, green apple, anise and a whiff of citrus rind. Bottled end November. Mid yellow in colour, but fresh. There is an impressive weight of fruit for this hillside vineyard. Aged in x-bourbon wood, this single cask pick utilises Overeem's proprietary heavy toast and char treatment through the coopering process. Our tasting from a 20ml sample found a straightforward, pleasant malty experience that doesn't push the complexity hard offering slightly bittersweet chocolate notes and a gently grippy finish with suggestions of dried coconut through the aftertaste. Because these are single barrel outturns of around 140 bottles at a time, the flavour profile will vary slightly from batch to batch. 43% Alc./Vol.

A combination of destemmed and whole bunch ferments were employed with maturation taking place in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new.
Semi translucent red to dark red colour with a light red hue. Sailing through the nostrils with plenty of intensity are alluring dark cherry, strawberry, violet, dried herb, forest floor, subtle meaty notes and spicy cedar. Light and supple across the palate, delicious dark cherry and strawberry fruits intermix with forest floor, brambly cedar, fresh herbs and spice. Silky smooth, seamlessly integrated tannin structure. Understated in its power it finishes long with a seductive savouriness.

    Bottle

    ABV: 50.4%

Apart from an official release 50 year old in 2017, very few Tamdhus have been marketed at any great age, so this indie edition is something of a novelty. Largely reserved for blending, the scarcity is also due to the distillery changing hands and being mothballed on multiple occasions - as recently as 2009. Edrington Group finally sold the distillery to Ian Mcleod Distillers and production resumed in 2012 with a new range of core expressions hitting the market. This bottling stems from before the distillery's 'modern period' during which there was (arguably) a bit less emphasis on sherry maturation. To enrich this charismatic Speysider, Murray McDavid have finished it in a small 110 litre x-bourbon cask from Koval Distillery in Chicago, intensifying the flavours of fruit salad, oak spice and orange while creaming up the mouthfeel. The outturn from cask 600006 equates to 124 bottles at natural strength of 50.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

1989 Murray McDavid The Fiddichside 31 Year Old Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

    ABV: 47.5%

A mystery malt. The Fiddichside Inn is a legendary bar started by the late Joe Brandie, but this teaspooned whisky is said to have a clue to its provenance in its title (is there more than one distillery with ‘fiddich’ in its name?) The second component is reported to be Balvenie - but we can't say for sure. What we do know is that Murray McDavid finished the duo in two first-fill sherry casks: Six months in PX and two years in Oloroso. Two barrels and two different distilleries technically makes this a blended malt rather than a single. Reuniting both has resulted in a whisky with flavours of baked apple, waxy fruits, creamy vanilla and sweet oak. 47.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The palate is very gentle but does have a bit of a sawdust dryness. Again, a pastry like sweetness with egg-washed puff pastry, apples, raisins and cinnamon. So yeah, Tarte-Tatin, cobbler, what have you. Quite some oak and after a while some pepper starts shining through. Swallow: The finish lingers with dryness and the hint of pepper. It’s less sweet than the palate and nose, and a little bit more spicy. An apple seed bitterness joins the fray, with baking spices and some pear skins. It is quite true to the character of the distillery that we don’t know about, with notes of fruit and apples, some honey throughout as well. A very gorgeous dram, especially because it has mellowed so much over three long decades. Highly recommended. - maltfascination.com

The majority of the estate chardonnay comes from one site; an east-facing slope planted in 1996. Whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented in French puncheons (20% new) and foudre. An effortless wine that has power but doesn't feel as if it's been 'made' or forced in any way. Subtle stone fruits, spice and a mineral note that follows onto the palate which is simultaneously generous yet restrained; the acidity in total harmony with the fruit. In a word – lovely. Cabernet Franc fruit is all hand-picked into small baskets, double sorted and then destemmed but not crushed and fermented in small open vats. Gentle maceration over 3-4 weeks, followed by maturation in old oak foudres and sandstone amphorae for 7-12 months.
Dense inky black core with a deep youthful dark purple hue. Freshly crushed red currant and raspberry scents meld into inky earth, fresh herb and spice notes. Rich juicy red currant and red raspberry fruits are framed by a firm tannin structure and bright acidity that together impart a grippy feel. What was previously released as the Oakville Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estates Tier comes all from To Kalon and was fermented in oak tanks and aged in 96% new French oak. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. The NV DP233 Dry Apera leads with an attractive nose of quince, orange peel, white pepper, sultana, fig and lashings of aniseed and smoked almonds. The wine is dry but luscious, with an oily mouthfeel and layers of savory spice. It's really good. It makes me want some sardines on toast with fancy salted butter. 20% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This is also firmly reduced and revealing nothing save for a touch of wood toast. There is excellent density and power to the larger-scaled flavors that display the robustness typical of Clos du Cromin on the clean, dry and persistent finish that is borderline tannic. This is also very good for its level though it is clearly less refined. Drink through 2028+.

Pungent aromas of oak toast, reduction and lemon zest precede the finer and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that possess first-rate mid-palate density as they coat the mouth with sappy dry extract while displaying lovely balance, on the classy, clean, crisp and well-balanced finale. The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru sports a very subtle reduction on the nose and fine intensity, though I feel this will require some bottle age to really open up. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, fine substance here, lovely acidity with fresh green apple, pear and lime towards the finish. An appealingly bitter aftertaste urges you back for another sip. Classy. Drink 2024-2045.

Mid lemon yellow. More bacon fat than fruit on the nose, reasonably concentrated white fruit on the palate with an agreeable lift at the finish, ripe limes infiltrating white fruit, and persistent. Firm reduction. There is more evident minerality if not the same mid-palate density to the rich but not really generous medium weight flavors that possess an even more refined texture that carries over to the bone-dry, balanced and sneaky long finish. Note that this is sufficiently firm to easily repay a decade plus of keeping. This too is excellent. Drink through 2031+.

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a clean, precise nose, the same level of reduction as the Les Referts, with green apple and light limestone scents. The palate is very well balanced, surfeit with tension thanks to the acidity, precise and mineral-driven towards the finish. What a wonderful Folatières, one that should age gracefully in bottle. 2 x 350 litre barrels made from 0.42ha, though there was a moment when they didn’t expect to make anything. Mid lemon yellow. A form of nutty reduction here. 2015 Giuseppe Quintarelli Alzero
    Veneto, ITALY
    $850. 00
    Bottle
    $10200.00 Dozen
    ABV: 16.5%
    Closure: Cork

Giuseppe Quintarelli was known as ‘the Master of the Veneto’, and is the name behind one of the most renowned estates in Italy. Sadly, Giuseppe passed away in early 2012 and he leaves behind a legacy of producing remarkable wines with an outstanding philosophy, to his eldest daughter who continues to carry on the tradition of this great estate. With their easily recognisable hand scripted labels, these wines offer at glimpse into one of the world’s most faithful artisanal winemakers who was an ultimate believer in letting nature do her thing and in order for wines to reach their ultimate potential these wines were only released when he deemed them to be ready.

Quintarelli's Alzero has a cult following among his devotees with a reputation rivalling their benchmark Amarone. Using a blend of approximately 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Merlot, the wine is made with the same appassimento drying technique as the Amarone which concentrates and intensifies the flavours. Following drying of between 60 to 100 days the grapes are put into vat and pressed after 20 days of maceration, and unlike other wines in the range, ageing for Alzero is done all in barriques. The first 24-36 months are spent in French barrels before being transferred to Slavonian oak for approximately 48 months before bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2015 Cabernet Alzero is loaded with varietal character, bursting from the glass with a dark blend of black fruits, savory herbs, pencil lead and crushed stone. This is velvety smooth, with juicy acidity to balance and a core of mineral-tinged red and blue fruits complemented by confectionary spice. It leaves the palate reeling with youthful tension as hints of blood orange swirl under an air of violet inner florals. Dusty tannins resonate throughout. The energy within the 2015 is off the charts and provides a perfect counterpoint to its internal intensity. Bury this one deep. Drink 2026-2040.

Quintarelli's Rosso del Bepi is an extremely special declassified Amarone made in the 'average' vintages when Amarone is not produced. The final decision on which wine will be released is made just a few months before bottling but in the most difficult years, neither of these wines will be produced. This wine reflects classic Amarone blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella (with a smaller percentage of other varieties mixed in for good measure). It will offer immediate pleasure but for those of us who have the patience to wait, these wines will continue to evolve and gain complexity.

    Other Reviews....
Because the Quintarelli family did not make a 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, fruit for that wine came to this wine instead. The 2016 Rosso del Bepi does have a hint of herbal greenness (which is why the top-tier wine was not produced) followed by pressed blackberry and cherry liqueur. I also get a pinch of bitter chocolate. However, this is a declassified Amarone, and you get a good sense of its depth and complexity. The fruit underwent up to four months of appassimento and went into oak botte for six to seven years. It was bottled in March 2023 with 15.5% alcohol (compared to the 16.5% you see in most vintages of Amarone). It offers intensity and generosity. The Rosso del Bepi was made in 2010, 2014 and 2016. Drink 2025-2045.

There will be no Amarone in 2016; instead, we’re treated to a new vintage of Rosso del Bepi. This is dark and brooding in the glass, youthfully coy, with a bouquet of dried roses and violets. Complicating whiffs of incense give way to cherry sauce and dark chocolate. It's rich and complex yet also remarkably energetic, with a tactile mineral core that enhances its tart red berry fruits while hints of sour orange add a cheek-puckering sourness toward the close. The 2016 finishes with medium length and a chalky sensation, tapering off with suggestions of licorice and tangerine. This sexy and energetic Rosso del Bepi will win a lot of hearts. Drink 2025-2033.

This wine is one of their single vineyard bottling - typically made from Corvina, Rondinella, Cabernet Franc and supporting varieties - the Ca’ del Merlo is aged for seven years before bottling. It undergoes a second fermentation in contact with the lees of Quintarelli’s Amarone, in the Italian tradition of Ripasso, thereby utilising byproducts of the legendary latter to add a layer of complexity to the already high-quality base wine.

    Other Reviews....
The Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ca’ del Merlot [sic] is distinctly savory in the glass, with a thrust of wild herbs that evolves into fresh picked strawberries and wet stone. This is a model of purity and balance, with brilliant acidity that propels its crisp wild berry fruits as violet inner florals collect toward the close. Further elevated by a hint of confectionary spice, it tapers off remarkably fresh and vivid, with a blueberry tinge and dusty tannins that promise a lovely evolution. This is a gorgeous interpretation of Cà dal Merlo. It's a blend of 80% Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, with 20% Cabernet and Merlot, with half of the grapes dried for two months and the other half pressed fresh after harvest. Drink 2025-2032.

There's no doubt that if Domaine Robert Chevillon were based in Vosne-Romanee or Chambolle-Musigny, their wines would be next to impossible to find and sell for exorbitant prices. That they are found in Nuits-Saint-Georges, a village with no grand cru sites, has allowed these wines to fly under the radar for many consumers. That said, these are some of the most accomplished wines of Burgundy, and best of all continually produce wines that seemingly ignore any challenges a vintage might throw their way to achieve results seen only at very few of the finest addresses across the Cote.

Now under the stewardship of Robert Chevillon's sons Bertrand and Denis, these passionate pair of vignerons are tireless in their pursuit of the finest expression of Pinot Noir possible. After meticulous care in the vineyards across the year, grapes are hand harvested, sorted and de-stemmed before receiving a cold maceration in vats for 5-6 days and natural fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks. Maturation lasts from 15 to 18 months in a mix of 30% new and 70% second use barrels.

Les Vaucrains is located further up the slope from Les Saint-Georges and Les Cailles, and completes the trio of standout vineyards in Nuit-Saint-Georges. It's also the most powerful and concentrated wine in the range, and is shown after Les Saint-Georges when tasting at the Domaine. Chevillon's plot is on the lower portion of the vineyard, granting is some more depth of fruit than some other producers of Les Vaucrains.

    Other Reviews....
A slightly more deeply pitched nose combines notes of spice, red and dark currant, plum and plenty of humus-inflected forest floor character. The sleek and almost painfully intense larger-bodied flavors possess exquisite detail as well as focused power that really builds as the solidly complex and lingering finish sits on the palate. As one would expect in the 2021 vintage, this doesn't have its usual volume, but the balance is impeccable. Highly recommended. Drink through 2036+.

The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains unwinds to reveal aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of baking chocolate, forest floor and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's a powerful, structured wine that's broader-shouldered than the more suave, elegant Cailles and Les Saint-Georges, but which is also exceptionally characterful.

Classic ruby color. As is often the case chez Chevillon, this is the most elegant wine in the range with its spicy, ultra-fresh and restrained nose that mixes both red and dark pinot fruit, violet and sandalwood. Despite the slope there is still a good proportion of gravel here, and can lead to wines with generous fruit weight and presence. Chevillon produces a deep and firm example of Les Pruliers that can often rival Les Vaucrains for the most powerful wine in the portfolio.

A darker fruit profile presents notes of plum, dark currant and plenty of earth and game wisps. There is both fine power and richness to the big-bodied if less refined flavors that display fine length on the robust and moderately rustic finale. This isn't as dense as it usually is but even so, there is no lack of size and weight. Patience again suggested as this is definitely built to repay extended keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Scents of red berries, dark chocolate, orange zest, sweet spices and loamy soil preface the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine that's built around sweet, powdery tannins, and which concludes with a mouthwatering finish. The Pruliers often needs a lot of time, but this 2021 looks set to be unusually approachable, even if it also has the substance and structure to age.

A full bright purple. I love this nose. On the lifted side of plums, nothing heavy here, and with a sumptuous raspberry seedless feel on the palate, the fruit runs easily, fluidly to the finish, fine tannins, no overt oakiness. Drink from 2027-2033.

Soils in Les Chaignots are more alluvial than in other areas of the village, with more chalk and gravel and very little clay. The site has a gentle slope with good drainage, and the vines here grow deep to access water and nutrients. Located at the northern end of Nuits, wines from Les Chaignots display intense floral aromatics with fruity nuances and great concentration.

As is usually the case, the expressive nose is quite spicy, indeed blind this could aromatically pass for a Vosne with its pretty plum, dark berry and exotic tea scents. The rich and quite generous yet refined and pure medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. Lovely and understated. Drink through 2029+.

The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots is very pretty, bursting with aromas of red berries, coniferous forest floor, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids and beautifully refined tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window.

A sound reliable purple, a plump and really rather gorgeous nose, more fruit than flowers, but properly juicy, balanced by correct acidity and very long. I would not want the fruit to taste any riper, but it is lovely as it is. Drink from 2026-2031.

Situated on the lower slopes at the northern end of Nuits village, Les Bousselots often produces softer and more approachable reds than is seen with the other premier cru Nuits-Saint-Georges vineyards. While the soil here is deep, Chevillon's plot contains old vines that retain good acidity and structure to support the richer flavours.

    Other Reviews....
Here a more restrained nose is aromatically similar to the Chaignots if not quite as spicy. There is more power and punch to the intensely saline-suffused middleweight flavors that also conclude in a moderately austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. Bousselots always requires at least mid-term cellaring to show its best and the 2021 version will be no exception. Recommended. Drink through 2031+.

Along with Les Vaucrains and the eponymous Les Saint-Georges vineyard, Les Cailles is one of the most highly regarded parcels in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Bordering Les Saint-Georges, Les Cailles produces wines which often rival those of its neighbour, and while they may not display the outright power they are perhaps more refined here.

Moderate wood sets off spicy and very ripe aromas of various dark berries that are not quite as fresh though they are nicely layered. The exceptionally rich medium-bodied flavors possess fine intensity as well as good concentration, indeed the sappy dry extract buffers the equally firm and robust finale.

Here the less expressive nose is not as spicy but actually more complex with its array of poached plum, black raspberry, smoke, earth and underbrush. The delicious, vibrant and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by bright acidity on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish that is even firmer. This is a classic Bousselots that will require extended patience. Drink through 2035+.

Notes of cassis, smoky berry fruit, spices and rich soil tones introduce the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots, a medium to full-bodied, bright and concentrated wine that's a touch more structured and muscular than the Chaignots.

Rich concentrated dark black centre with a purple rim. Inkily concentrated. I like the flavours afterwards, bilberries and red fruits, but the concentration needs to dial down which it presumably will with extra elevage – which Bertrand is hoping to extend as late as possible.
