Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Emanating from the glass are dark plum and liquorice scents which are intertwined with vanillin cedar, mint and peppered earth notes. Rich dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits show terrific purity and concentration with notions of scorched earth, choc mint, vanillin cedar and pepper lining the back half. Plush and succulent it possesses remarkable freshness and polished tannins. Long sumptuous conclusion.

A mellow red in a great maturity zone. Evocative pepper and green olive scents amongst plum, dark chocolate and truffle. The palate is moody and dark fruited, again we see pepper, again the green olive, there's some fig and ground hazelnut characters emerging, too. Tannins weave through the wine with grace and a light, silty texture. It feels 'fine wine' zone, poised in its distance between youth and maturity. Very enjoyable now.

Selva Capuzza takes its name from ‘Silvae’ (meaning wild place) and the Formetini family have been nurturing and protecting this wild place for over 100 years. Made from Turbiana which is the regions name for the grape that is the same as Trebbiano di Soave and the Marche’s Verdicchio.
Brilliant very pale straw core with a greenish tinged outskirts and watery hue. The nose features elevated aromatics of tropical fruits, lime and melon followed by hints of fresh herbs and wet slate. Delicious ripe pear, tropical fruit and green apple flavours are delivered with terrific intensity and possess a luscious textural feel. Crisp saline like acidity with infusions of fresh herbs and flinty mineral elements lingering underneath. The long scrumptious finish showing plenty of volume.

Medium-full colour. Closed-in but rich, concentrated nose. Good grip here. Medium-full body. Ripe, balanced, fresh and very profound and elegant. Exceptionally fine, complex fruit. Good as his Clos de Bèze is, this is, as always, just that bit superior. A great wine.

Clive Coates MW - Decanter (Feb 2018)

Since the last time I tried this in 2016, it clearly evidences some evolution though it's clear that this is very much still on the way up. There is still a slight, if discernible, dash of unabsorbed wood present on the notably ripe nose that displays a superb range of spice elements along just a hint of secondary character on the black currant, plum, earth and game scents. The superbly concentrated and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors are wonderfully rich, sappy and lavish large-scaled flavors that flash excellent power and drive on the highly complex and still firm though not longer compact finale that offers simply stunning length. For my taste, this has just now arrived at a stage where it could be enjoyed now though with that said, another 6 to 10 years should be beneficial. A monument in the making. Note that one bottle I have tried displayed a very subtle but not invisible touch of brett. Drink from 2030+.

Glowing vermilion. Rousseau colours are never the deepest but this shade indicates that the wine is still in its infancy. There is an element of reduction on the nose, but all the power is there with an impressive density of deep dark cherry fruit. There is brilliant intensity on the palate too in the classical, polished Rousseau style. Still an infant but it is now possible to see how the wine will unfurl over the next few decades. It is not a complete sin to start drinking this wine, but you will be missing out on a valuable potential upside.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, spices, espresso roast, loamy soil and orange oil, the 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless core of fruit that's framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. Rich and penetrating, it's the most reserved wine in the cellar at this youthful stage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru bides its time in the glass. Dark berry fruit, oyster shell and blackcurrant pastilles mix with subtle autumn leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, cohesive but not deep or concentrated. Shows fine acidity and is nicely poised, though it's unapologetically conservative on the finish. Is this hiding something up its sleeve? At the moment, it is shown up by the Clos Sant-Jacques. Drink 2025-2042.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)

This wine figures prominently on my list for 'best of the vintage', edged out only slightly by its stablemate Clos de Bèze. It is a wine of great intensity, with pronounced, forward, brambly blackberry fruit, notes of lavender, smoke, a hint of wood spice, and compelling savoury complexity. The texture is firmly tannic and dense but not imposing. There is no lack of fresh acidity, yet everything is in balance, and the overall impression is one of seamless beauty. Drink 2027-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)

Intricately layered aromas of spice, earth, dark berries, underbrush, dried floral hints and leather are trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The texture of the medium-bodied flavors is ultra-fine yet there is plenty of power and punch, particularly on the intensely mineral-inflected, youthfully austere, serious and amazingly persistent finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. In particular, the complexity is already remarkable, and this beautifully balanced effort should amply repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2038+.

A fine glowing purple, with just the lightest touch of reduction. Then waves of flavour on the palate, extra depth in the middle, but still more discreet than usual. This will have the grace of Chambertin but not quite the depth of the greatest years. Well-made and persistent. Drink from 2030-2040.

The most dramatic wine in the cellar is the 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fleshy, enveloping wine that bursts with aromas of sweet cherries, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and smoked duck. Deep and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is so much more expressive on the nose compared to the Chambertin (which is a cooler terroir due to the clay, its location next to the combe and adjacent to the frost). Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant. Drink 2025-2048.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)

My red wine of the vintage. Comparing the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze in Rousseau’s cellar, the Bèze is generally better received in cool years, which is the case in 2021. It is spicier and more open, the aromas more voluptuous, with ripe red and black fruit, plenty of earthy, mineral depth of flavour and complexity, and a texture on the palate that is plumper, riper and more ‘exhibitioniste’, according to Cyrielle Rousseau. Drink 2030-2060.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Jan 2022)

A slightly more deeply colored hue is in keeping with the somewhat riper, and certainly spicier, aromas of both red and dark currant, exotic tea and more prominent floral nuances, all of which is also trimmed in enough wood to mention. The medium weight plus flavors are almost as powerful as those of the Chambertin if not quite so mineral-driven while displaying equally superb length and complexity on the balanced, graceful and compact finale. While qualitatively quite similar to the Chambertin, as is typically the case, these offer two very different expressions. Drink through 2038+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound (Jan 2023)

A delicious vibrant crimson purple with a clean, reduction free, nose. Plenty of energy here. This is more linear and less nuanced than the Chambertin, with a greater concentration of fruit on the palate but less detail. Assured and long, yet ultimately I think the Chambertin shows greater class. Drink from 2029-2038.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is being matured in 80% new oak, and it was the one wine in the cellar that was quite strongly marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it. Behind the prominent framing of cedary oak lurks a pretty bouquet of red and black berry fruit, orange rind, rich soil tones and peony. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tangy and open-knit with a vanillin-inflected finish. I suspect that the final assemblage will be more integrated than the single barrel, but in its structure and overall profile, this looks to be reminiscent of Rousseau's 2007 Clos Saint-Jacques.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a bright and youthful nose. Fine delineation with exuberant dark berry fruit, this still needs more bottle age to subsume the oak. Wonderful redcurrant, cranberry notes develop, with orange blossom hints. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins and exquisite balance, yet it clams up toward the finish. Huge potential, but it needs time in bottle. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. Drink 2028-2048.

Domaine Rousseau owns one-third of the clos, with most of it in the sunniest and warmest spot against the wall. This combines impressive depth and structure with the freshness that you always get in the best wines from this renowned premier cru. Aged in 70% new wood, this has the concentration and texture to age impressively in bottle. Drink 2026-2035.

Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

Here the wood treatment is equally subtle on the restrained nose that displays fresh and cool aromas of red currant, wet stone, tea and forest floor. Like the Ruchottes the mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is quite sleek and ultra-intense while flashing plenty of minerality on the strikingly well-detailed finish that displays focused power and superb length. This is an exercise in harmony and grace and while it should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years, it should age effortlessly for several decades. Drink through 2032+.

Firmer and more compact than the supple, expressive Cazetiers, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru delivers aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notes of rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, lively and tensile, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it will require a bit of patience.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)

The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed nose and is rather floral in style. Traces of blue fruit and pressed iris flower combine succinctly with the red fruit. Again, there is wonderful delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's cohesive and smooth in texture, nothing weighty. The 2021 might lack density for some, but it is so harmonious and charming that you won't be able to resist. Drink 2025-2040.

Neal Martin - Vinous (Nov 2022)

Rousseau's Charmes is the first grand cru tasted in the cellar. The emphasis here is on the purity of fruit and silky expression rather than the lush density of some growers. There is a hint of spice to the ripe, ethereal cherry aromas, but there is no new wood in the maturation here – 'you have to avoid crushing it with new wood', according to Cyrielle. It is produced from a combination of relatively young vines in Charmes proper with old vines from Mazoyères, which give a very elegant result. Drink 2025-2045.

Charles Curtis MW - Decanter (Nov 2022)

A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note. The supple but racy middleweight flavors aren't quite as concentrated but they're finer with retaining good power on the sour cherry-inflected finale that delivers excellent length. Lovely and a wine that should also repay mid to longer-term keeping. Drink through 2033+.

Light to medium colour, not much nose is evident, discreet red fruit on the palate, perhaps over discreet for this cuvée, light fresh strawberry, with a trace of acidity. This may put on a little more weight later in life. Drink from 2026-2031.

Poggio di Sotto Brunello is celebrated as the quintessential expression of Montalcino’s famed terroir. Crafted with meticulous care and deep respect for tradition, Poggio di Sotto capture the pure, elegant character of Sangiovese at its finest. Through extended aging in Slavonian oak, Poggio di Sotto achieves a rare harmony of complexity, structure, and finesse that embodies the very soul of Brunello.

    Other Reviews....
Bright, full red. Nuanced, extremely deep and complex nose offers raspberry, redcurrant, superripe red cherry, tobacco, sandalwood, warm stones, vanilla and a violet nuance. Suave, juicy and multilayered, with harmonious acidity nicely framing the wine’s concentrated red plum, tobacco and mocha flavors. This subtle but very concentrated Brunello finishes delicately savoury and mineral, with substantial but smooth tannins and lovely lingering perfume of sweet spices and perfume. A huge success for an estate that has known many over the years, this may well be the wine of the vintage. Drinking window: 2028-2045.

Although this wine was very shy initially, the Poggio di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino eventually hits all the high notes of Sangiovese. This is a wine of enormous inner tension, showing a punchy, lifted personality with aromas of cherry skin and blackberry. You get brandied cherry, strawberry glazed pie with the gelatin, underbrush, blue flower, forget-me-nots, balsam herb, mint and licorice. A few hours later, the wine had developed into a classic beauty with slender lines, firm structure and a sparkle of brilliant acidity. The oak is integrated to the point of invisibility, the tannins are elegant and fine and the acidity is that proverbial cherry on top. Ultimately, I liked this village bottling more than the 2018 Riserva. Drink 2030-2055.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Dec 15, 2023)

Dusty roses, worn leather, dried strawberries and arid earth form a classic bouquet as the dynamic 2019 Brunello di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This is feminine yet deep and textural, with ripe plums and black cherries motivated by brisk acidity. Violet inner florals and licorice hints form toward the close. The 2019 leaves a salty mineral staining to mingle with fine-grained tannins and spice, as it finishes with incredible length, yet still so fresh. This is incredibly youthful and inward today, but the potential is off the charts. I expect the 2019 to put on some weight and blossom over the next five to ten years. Glorious. Drink 2027-2042.

Sweet cherry and flower aromas with some orange peel and lilac character. Medium-bodied with pretty depth and focus. Ripe, fine tannins and an attractive finish. Subtle richness and class. From organically grown grapes. Give this three or four years to come around. Best after 2025.

    James Suckling

Despite heavy rain, there was very little disease in 2019 and the hot summer brought the grapes to full ripeness. The subdued cherry aromas reflect the wine's youth, though they became more expressive with aeration. The palate is rich but sleek in texture, with polished tannins and fine acidic lift. The texture is grainy without being tough, and there's so much energy and grip here that the wine clearly has great ageing potential. Very long, with a lightly peppery finish. A majestic end to the decade. Drink 2026-2040.

    Stephen Brook - Decanter

The 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino pours a jeweled ruby color and has more concentration than the 2018, but it's going to need time to reach its full potential of complexity. Rich notes of kirsch, licorice, sapid herbs, and dark stones are followed by a medium to full-bodied red that's deep and rich through the palate, with ripe and noble tannins, a seamless feel, and a long-lasting finish. A profound wine and one of the best of the vintage, give it some time while drinking the 2018s and 2020s.

Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot produce exceptional Burgundy, yet are still firmly under the radar for many collectors. Given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the expert winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, Coquard Loison-Fleurot won't remain hidden for long.

For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties. While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house. The wines of Coquard Loison-Fleurot are characterised by their purity and transparency of their terroirs.

Containing 20% whole bunches, the 2022 Vosne-Romanée Village has a tightly wound and "correct" bouquet. It lets the Morey-Saint-Denis Village take the limelight at the moment, red and black fruit combined, a little more sous-bois than expected. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of lively, peppery red berry fruit, blood orange and a pinch of white pepper on the finish. Like last year, the 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Village is more generous on the nose than the Chambolle Village: dark cherries and crushed violet scents - commendable purity. The 2022 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has an open and expressive bouquet with brambly red fruit, Earl Grey, and light forest floor scents, with a hint of morels in the background. It is not as opulent as the Clos de la Roche, though it conveys more Pinoté. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit. Smooth in texture with a dab of dark chocolate and vanilla, imparting a soupçon of exoticism towards the finish. Moderate length. The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village leans more towards red fruit on the nose, freshly tilled loam filtering through the raspberry and wild strawberry scents, though it needs a little more cohesion to develop during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with a pretty entry. Fine tannins, quite mineral-driven with that tickle of Pinoté on the finish. Delightful. Drink 2026-2036.

Similar glowing purple, this time with a spicier nose. An excellent core of predominantly raspberry fruit, a fine core to this throughout, with a little oak at the finish. Not quite so striking as the Morey but a lovely glass in the offing. Drink from 2028-2034.

This is also attractively fresh and bright with its cool and airy nose of the essence of wild red berries, forest floor and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is fine volume to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that possess focused power and almost no rusticity on the impressively long and complex finale. This is an excellent Gevrey villages and worth considering. Drink through 2030+.

Raised with 20% whole bunches, the 2022 Echézeaux Grand Cru showed a little reduction on the nose, but there seems to be plenty of concentration here. The medium-bodied palate offers ripe black fruit laced with orange rind and veins of dark chocolate, probably emanating from the 50% new oak. It's a solid Echézeaux that might lack a bit of flair, though it will mature well in bottle. Drink 2028-2040.

Just as deep a purple colour but more elegance on the nose, less obviously and immediately sumptuous. Wavelets of alpine strawberry and its raspberry equivalent dance across the palate, super fine, with startling elegance. Another 2022 beauty from Thomas. Drink from 2030-2038.

Classic deep ruby color. The exuberantly spicy and ultra-nose displays the essence of red cherry and cool floral scents. There is both fine volume and punch to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that offer fine length on the youthfully austere finish that is supported by fine-grained tannins. This could use better depth but that should just be a matter of appropriate cellaring. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is raised in 50% new oak with 15% whole bunches. This feels a little muted on the nose compared to the other Grand Crus at the moment, despite coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry. Good body and weight. There’s slightly peppery red fruit with blood orange and hints of curry leaf towards the finish that has more gusto than the current aromatics. Be patient here - this Clos Vougeot has something up its sleeve. Drink 2029-2050.

A rich deep purple, super saturated, with a bouquet to match. A full and firm structure with Thomas Collardot’s abundant fruit flowing over the top. A darker fruit with a blackberry note, but not the mulberry which would imply over-ripeness. The 20% whole bunch vinification adds an additional freshness, a slight salinity which works very well. Here too there is enough wood to notice framing the markedly floral-suffused nose with its notes of lavender, rose petal, violet and acacia blossom that add breadth to the elegant and cool red berry scents. The super-sleek and moderately dense flavors retain fine delineation on the dusty, youthfully austere and persistent finale where a touch of wood slowly reemerges. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is the most reticent on the nose, painfully shy despite coaxing from its shell. Touches of cold stone and a light estuarine tang. The medium-bodied palate has quite fine tannins, very pure and tensile, sporting dark cherries mixed with Indian spices and pain d'epices. There’s fine length, though the Clos de la Roche has a notch more flair. Drink 2029-2060.

A bright pink edge to the purple. Very striking, very immediate, totally red fruit, very convincing essence of raspberry, with some ripe redcurrants behind. Fills the mouth, not quite the same intensity at the back as the Clos de la Roche but the Clos St-Denis does have quality finesse at the finish. Drink from 2030-2038.

A completely different nose offers up much spicier aromas of red currant, exotic tea and a similar hint of violet. There is excellent vibrancy to the attractively textured middleweight flavors that don't have the power of the Clos de la Roche but do offer slightly better depth and precision on the lingering finale that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the gorgeously well-balanced finale. The 2022 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak with 20% whole bunches, has an entrancing, beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit, becoming ever more floral in the glass: rose bush and iris petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with orange sorbet and allspice, building confidence towards its ripe and quite spicy finish. A glowing fresh purple. Not reduction but just a mineral flinty top note above the fruit. Sitting back on its haunches but this lack of immediacy makes it even finer. All at the back of the palate and then additional waves come through thereafter, blue fruit indeed. So subtle yet striking as well Drink from 2032-2040.

Discreet but not imperceptible wood sets off distinctly earthy aromas of plum, red currant, spice and a whisper of violet. The 2022 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a more generous and expressive bouquet than the Clos de Vougeot: black cherries and wild strawberries, just a bit of reduction to wade through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid, quite structured entry. Grippy in the mouth, a solid Mazoyères-like Charmes with a dash of peppercorns on the finish. The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. From shale, the 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese is subtle on the nose. The merest flicker of reduction precedes distant perfumes of ripe pear, stone fruit and lifted, serene citrus peel in the green-to-yellow spectrum. The palate holds rounded sweetness, seemingly edged by tealeaf, stoniness and lime peel. The citrus takes over, providing serene and profound aromatics, lasting, elegant and pure. Despite the sugar, sweetness almost stops registering in these alluring flavors that push freshness much more than sweetness. The 2022 is a sleeper, slow and profound, but with proper mileage. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. Drink 2028-2050.

Other reviews... I’ve got to give it to Rabbit Hole, out of the gate their whiskeys weren’t overly exciting, but as the distillery has matured, so has their approach to their whiskeys. Made in small 15 barrel batches, Cavehill with its unique mashbill offers an interesting flavor profile in an extremely accessible and friendly sip. This is a great next step for many whiskey drinkers looking for something a touch more interesting, but fear going too far over the line. Its approachable delivery of sweet, but not-too-sweet flavors against a more traditional spice and peppery finish works well. It’s young and lacks complexity, but brings a clean and bright taste to its delivery. It's accessible in all the right ways, and while it might not immediately wow, it maintains a level of intrigue that makes it quite a bit of fun to drink. - breakingbourbon.com

...Rabbit Hole's core bourbon brand now carries the name Cavehill, though the liquid remains unchanged. I've been oscillating between this and its Wait vineyard sibling, struggling to determine which I prefer. While this is not the winner, at least for now, I suggest you buy both. This may well outpace the other in time. There is more intensity, sap and while 'power' is too philistine a word for these beauties, more oomph. Ferrous, even. Yet the mocha seams of oak are more obvious and weighing on the flow, a minor foible to be erased, surely, with patience. Not the pinot-esque beauty queen Wait, but so much to adore. Raspberry bonbon, candied orange peel, vanilla, cardamon and the tamarind entrance of the Marrakech souk. Drink 2022 - 2030.

The 2021 Don Shiraz benefited from the 2020/2021 growing season's respite from previous hot and dry conditions, with abundant winter rain leading to healthy vineyards and slightly above-average crop sets. Despite a dry summer, early canopy growth sustained the fruit, which developed flavor and ripeness early, allowing for harvest with lower sugar and higher natural acidity. The fruit arrived in perfect condition, and the resulting wines from this vintage are noted for their freshness, depth, and personality, marking 2021 as a standout year.
Vinification included a natural soak followed by a week of natural fermentation, with careful extraction methods employed throughout. Post-fermentation, the wine was basket-pressed and underwent malolactic fermentation in oak. The 2021 Don Shiraz opens with a quiet assertiveness, revealing earthy and spicy notes indicative of a cooler harvest. As it unwinds, powerful aromas of red berries, leather, and dark chocolate emerge. The palate is refined and balanced, with assertive tannins, crisp acidity, and restrained opulence. The true depth and complexity of this vintage will unfold over time, promising a remarkable wine experience.

From New York City’s oldest operating whiskey distillery, the first since prohibition. Founded in 2010, Kings County operates out of the 118-year-old Paymaster Building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This little gem is described as a "Scotch-meets-bourbon hybrid", aged in a new barrel, yet with a light, smoky, peat-infused finish reminiscent of a single-malt.

Tasting note: Deep polished copper colour. Nice legs. Pencil shavings, new sawn oak, vanilla, orange zest and grilled corn aromas followed by a complex, pure, oily, semi-sweet delivery: Juicy and malt-like in the middle stages then gently tannic, corn-heavy to finish with hints of cocoa, leather and oak shavings. Beautifully textured. The peat remains in the shadows. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Dark muscovado sugars mixed with orange peel, liquorice… and peat reek!!! Adorable delivery: thick corn oil is awash with molten muscovado. The smoke keeps a respectful distance, but is there with ever-thickening tannins; spices grow, the peat murmurs, the tannins throb quietly amid residual sugars… Quite stunningly lovely.

Legend has it that this unique bourbon resulted from malt shortage at the distillery. Faced with a waning supply of malted barley (which makes up 20% of KCD's regular mash bill) a distiller grabbed some peated malt by accident to finish the batch. A year later, the spirit was sampled and the results were so delicious that KCD decided to make a thing of it.

To be clear, this is not a classic bourbon finished in a peated cask. It's a whiskey that conforms to the requirements for bourbon, yet is made with a percentage of peated malt. Obviously, this is a practice more commonly associated with Scotch whiskies and the malt Kings County use for this whiskey was even grown and kilned in Scotland. The peated malt represents 30% of the mash bill alongside 70% New York State organic corn (from Klaus and Mary Howell-Martens at Lakeview Organic Grain).

Tasting note: [Batch 133A] Made from New York State organic corn and malted barley from the U.K. Bright topaz / polished copper. Delicate woody aromas of balsa, fresh cut cedar and hints of liquorice before the sugars come to the fore as banana bread, light sticky date, caramel fudge and vanilla. A peppery edge balances the sweeter notes. Youthful and chewy but already delicious with well rounded flavours of salted caramel, nut chocolate, popcorn and black peppercorns. There's only one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, but the resulting wine is lovely, revealing aromas of pear, orange oil, nutmeg and clove, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate. 1x 350 litre barrel, unracked, from Les Fairendes. The oak is quite marked at the moment but there is easily enough fruit to cover it. A rumbustious approach with a gorgeous volume of fruit plus of course the oak backing. That will be cleaned up before bottling and this will be excellent. Drink from 2026-2033.

A fleshy, mid weighted Pommard with rich dark to black fruit framed by a study structure.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

2022 will be the last vintage for this wine as the parcel was sold after the harvest.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Pronounced black cherry and anise aromas are to the fore with some fresh herb, earth and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich dark to black cherry and anise flavours dominate the fleshy textured, mid weighted palate with dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar, earth and fresh herb accents tailing off through the back half. Sturdy tannin structure with a long ripe dark to black fruited finish that carries some gentle grip.

A fresh if quite restrained, even timid, nose grudgingly displays notes of plum, dark currant and a touch of earth. This is also wonderfully fresh and bright with its array of relatively deeply pitched aromas of cassis, black raspberry and a hint of smoked meat character. Light on it’s feet, fresh and refined with expansive red to dark fruits.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are perfumed like aromas of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry which are complimented by hints of anise, earthy forest floor, spicy cedar and fresh herbs. Light on it’s feet, delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and subtle anise flavours flow across the palate with a feeling that’s both refined and supple. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy forest floor, delicate bramble and dried herb accents lend further interest. Showing ample freshness and polished tannins, it finishes expansive, savoury and spicy.

A long and beautifully refined Burgundy that’s understated in its power.

Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.
Showing plenty of depth is a dark red core that has black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Alluring scents of violets, red cherries and wild strawberries captivate the olfactory senses with whiffs of red liquorice, fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Long and beautifully refined across the palate with a beam of fresh acidity underpinning delicious red to dark cherry, a dash of sour cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar nuances lie underneath. Understated in its power it possesses a polished tannin structure and supple mid palate feel. The expansive finish one of elegance and great persistence.

Citrusy nougat, delicate biscuit and spice elements the undercard. Excellent freshness with a long refined yet texturally caressing finish.

Audoin's 2022 Marsannay La Charme aux Prêtres Blanc reveals attractive aromas of green apple, pear, white flowers, citrus zest and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy, with good cut and tension, it's one of the domaine's livelier whites.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Powering through the nostrils are intense aromas of white peach, pear, dried honey and biscuity nougat followed by some crème brulee and spice notes. Rich and layered yet refined in it’s feel, flavours of white peach, pear and dried honey expand across the palate. Notions of crème brulee, cashew and spicy nougat then ensue. Shapely, cream tinged texture yet undeniably fresh, it finishes long, amply fruited and quite energetic. Should fill out nicely with a few more years bottle age.

Notes of citrus oil, nutmeg, buttery pastry and smoke introduce the 2022 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered wine that's ample and lively, with an expressive core of fruit. Sadly, only one barrel was produced.

Brilliant pale straw colour with gleaming green tinged edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear, baked apple and honeysuckle aromas stream from the glass trailed by some quince and cinnamon notes. Rich pear, dried honey and citrus flavours are intermeshed with quince and delicate wet stone characteristics. Textural yet fresh all at once, it has an underpinning of energetic acidity which guides it through to a long enveloping finish.

As I wrote last year, the 1995 Montrose is beginning to drink brilliantly, and this most recent example only confirms that. Wafting from the glass with a classic bouquet of red and black currant fruit, rich loamy soil, cigar box and black truffles, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with terrific concentration, ripe tannins and lively acids. The 1995 took its time, but this rather structured, powerful vintage of Montrose is now beginning to soften. Drink: 2020-2035.

Here we start to see the slightly austere side of Montrose, and how this helps it to age so gracefully. Exceptionally young at 22 years old, still tightly-structured and richly-scented. Cassis, truffles, cedar, burnished oak, and tobacco are set by lovely placement of tannins that are still fairly bullish and young. Classical and effortless. 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Drink: 2017-2035.
