    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 18%

Crafted by Jose Luis ('Pepe') Infante at the 230-year-old Romate Bodega, in Jerez. The N.P.U. Amontillado is barrel aged for 20 years in a dedicated solera system.

This bodega is still in the hands of local owners – a real rarity. Orange peel fills the nose, augmented by spice, coffee and toffee on the silky, velvety palate. Aged for more than 30 years, this long, complex wine would go well with pâtés, terrines and other rich canapés.

Pure and nutty, with aromas of dried apricot and sea air. In the mouth you get lots of almond and butter, while the A-rate finish is buttery but also quite complex. A classic, refined wine that dances across your tongue like a ballerina.

Tasted blind. Really sweet scent showing caramel, toffee, honey and toast. Pungent and robust on the palate. On the dry and oxidative side and extremely tight. Lovely intensity.

    Valle de Maipo, CHILE

    $4560.00 Dozen
    ABV: 15%

Almaviva is the ambitious partnership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild group (Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro (Chile) with the intention of creating a wine of exceptional character, complexity and ageing potential from extraordinary Chilean terroir. Launched with the 1996 vintage, consistent vineyard improvements and meticulous winemaking today mark Almaviva as one of the finest wines produced in Chile.
The 2020 vintage is adorned with a special anniversary label to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the winery.

    Other Reviews....
Fresh and deep nose, full of blueberries, minty cassis, mussels, cigars, dark spice and roasted sesame oak, which will need a year or two to fully integrate. A medium-to full-bodied Almaviva with supple, silky tannins and a wealth of black and blue fruit that provides a lot of charm now. Voluptuous and flattering on the palate, hallmarked by its tension and taut texture. Very long. This is the 25th anniversary bottling. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.

2020 was exceptionally dry, with 75% less rain than usual in the period between May and September, which resulted in an earlier harvest to produce a 2020 Almaviva with 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenère (from Peumo), 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, so with no Merlot this time. The process was as careful as possible, without using any bombs, doing manual and optical sorting of the grapes, pressing in small vertical presses and aging of 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of them new and the rest second use. The wine reached good ripeness with 14.9% alcohol. It still shows the effect of the élevage a bit, with abundant notes of sweet spices, a creamy touch and some smoke. I tasted it next to the 2019, and the wines have a very similar aromatic palette with a clear note of baked peppers. What was amazing in 2020 was that they harvested the Carmenere almost five weeks earlier than they normally would, and the result is not a green wine at all. As in all dry years, the wines show a little more tannic, a little in the style of the 2017—but the 2020 has more tension than the 2017, and the 2017 was more powerful and with a bigger tannic structure. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled during the second half of February 2022. Drink: 2024 - 2036.

    $5400.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

While the history of the Inglenook estate dates back to 1873, the modern rejuvenation of the property began when Francis Ford Coppola purchased a portion of the vineyards in 1975. He vowed to reunite the various parcels of land, along with the historic Chateau, and restore the reputation Inglenook enjoyed earlier in its life. With input from esteemed Bordeaux consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, and Philippe Bascaules (Chateau Margaux), Inglenook is now firmly one of the leading properties in Napa Valley.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose pops with vivacious notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of crushed rocks, bay leaves and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a solid, firm and grainy texture with a lively backbone cutting through dense earth-laced layers, finishing long and minerally. Impressive!

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon offers a captivating mix of textural intensity and vibrancy. Black cherry, spice, rose petal, menthol and licorice are all beautifully delineated. Aromas of ripe berries, sweet vanilla, licorice, dark chocolate and bread crust. Notes of dried herbs and pinewood, too. So well grounded. Smooth, with a lingering, silky mouth-feel. Full body and ripe, chewy tannins. Toned and muscular with hints of crushed rocks. Firm, linear finish. Try after 2025.

The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.

The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. ‘La Justice’ cuvée – named after its climat that Alexandrine bought in 2010 – produced its first vintage as recently as 2011. La Justice is located in the northeast part of Gevrey-Chambertin. The most recently released vintages of La Justice and Clos Prieur are so exceptionally made, that most wine critics consider them to be of a Premier Cru standard.

An interesting and equally fresh and ripe nose combines notes of black fruit coulis, kirsch, violet and a floral whiff. The delicious, vibrant and more refined medium weight flavors possess an attractive texture thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that buffers the moderately firm tannins on the slightly more complex and sneaky long finale. This too offers very fine quality for its level. Drink from 2026+.

An exuberantly fresh nose reflects notes of straw, petrol, citrus and apple. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the overtly stony middle weight flavors that terminate in a clean and dry finale that is shaped by bright lemon-tinged acidity. This refreshing effort should drink well almost immediately. Drink from 2023+.

    Applewood Distillery Alpine Gin (500ml)
    Adelaide Hills, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

An intense, juniper-forward spirit, 'Alpine' gin employs finger limes from the northern tablelands and pepper leaf from Alpine Victoria and Tasmania for added complexity.

Notes from the producers... An intricate, unabashedly Australian dry gin with a native citrus core, alongside a piquant, unctuous earthiness and a soaring eucalypt freshness. An authentic reflection of the arid interior of Australia. 43% Alc./Vol.

    CHILE
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

An unaged Pisco, made using hand-picked Alexandria Muscat and Pink Muscat grapes from Tulahuén, created by a family who have been producing pisco for five generations. Traditional copper and firewood alembics located at 1100 meters above sea level are employed. The nose is fragrant and winey with semi-sweet, floral-fruity notes including ripe pear and apple, hints of musk and mineral. Full-bodied with a nice balance and verve lifting the softer grape notes, especially through the warming, mildly fruity / elderflower-like finish. Like a spirituous incarnation of Alsatian Pinot Gris. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The fragrance of this graceful and delicate artisan pisco resembles a fresh, minty breeze, with some fruit underneath. On the palate, violet notes come forward, but never overwhelm, fading into light ginger notes on the finish. So lightweight, the flavors almost feel like they’re drifting away off the tongue. This is one to sip and savor.

On the palate there’s stone fruit, spices, vanilla, new leather, smoldering peat, and dark chocolate. The finish offers oak, black pepper, salt, and earthy peat. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith 2020

    IRELAND
    Reduced from $84.99
    $74. 99

    ABV: 43%

Besides switching lemon with Citrus monstruosa - a pulpy, bitter fruit native to Sardinia - the botanical bill here remains similar to Drumshanbo's 'Original'. Woody juniper and citrus peel vie for attention on the nose while background liquorice root enters late. The palate feels more intense than its modest ABV: Sedate on entry, but big on grapefruit tang and white pepper, especially through the finish; late oils and piney juniper carry the aftertaste. Bright and spicy, this will suit vibrant G&Ts and add zest to Summery cocktails. 43% Alc./Vol.

    IRELAND
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.3%

Predominantly composed of six to seven-year-old spirit, Dingle's new core bottling comes matured in PX Sherry (61%) and Bourbon (39%) first fill casks. A fairly mainstream but well-executed Irish profile showing nice integration in a soft, creamy delivery with low-key fruitiness through the middle, laced with vanilla wafer biscuit and delicately oily malt. The finish dries with hints of citrus and wood shavings. 46.3% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

    Spring Bay Vodka (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Spring Bay's first calling is single malt whisky, so it's no surprise that their vodka is barley-based, with a portion of wheat included. The mix creates a very pure, creamy style with semi-sweet marshmallow aromas and a medium dry palate that finishes with cleansing citrus and a pepper twang. Light cocoa lingers in the aftertaste. Diluted with pristine east coast rainwater. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Spring Bay Distillery primarily makes single malt whisky, so for its premium vodka, it's taken a portion of unaged single malt spirit and blended it with more traditional neutral grain spirit. The result is a bigger, more robust, oilier vodka than your standard commercial brands. This answers the question: 'why buy vodka from a whisky producer?' without being so big and funky as to be unrecognisable. Lots of malt sweetness and vanilla on the nose with a whiff of barnyard funk leads to a gentle palate with good texture and a clean finish of lingering orange pith. I’m never quite sure what to do with products like this as more neutral vodkas will mix more easily, but if you like your vodka on the rocks or really punching through in a mixed drink, this one has plenty of character without tipping into moonshine territory. 93 points - Fred Siggins - winecompanion.com

    2020 Rocas de Sena

    ABV: 14%

A new second wine here, the 2020 Rocas de Seña is named after the rocky soils from Seña is different as it includes Mediterranean grapes in the blend. This is the first vintage produced, and it’s a blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache (from their property in Vertientes, where the Syrah also comes from) and 8% Petit Verdot from selected plots from their property in Aconcagua. 2020 was warm and dry and saw an early harvest that delivered concentrated and powerful wines, this one at 14% alcohol and with a pH of 3.53 and 6.09 grams of acidity. It fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in concrete eggs, and the blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 65% of them new. The nose is very expressive, and the palate is juicy and textured palate, a little warmer and riper than the Seña, with that Mediterranean twist from the Garnacha and Syrah. It has an intense nose, quite primary, with red berries, herbs and even a citrus touch, but there is no sweetness at all. The fine tannins have grip, and the finish is dry and serious. The élevage was similar to the Seña, but in the future, they might go for a slightly shorter élevage and use some foudres. The wine has a very nice bright color and is still young and lively, very much in the serious and elegant style of the Seña, despite the warm inaugural vintage, showing in the juicy palate. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. Drink: 2022 - 2028.

Focused nose, showing fresh red chili chocolate with cigar, truffle, mint, olive and grilled meat. This is a medium-to full-bodied red with incredibly juicy and bright fruit and fine, caressing tannins that linger in the long, creamy but precise finish. Elegant and extremely drinkable with complexity. on top of 38% malbec, 25% syrah, 15% cabernet sauvignon, 14% grenache and 8% petit verdot. The real deal. Second wine of Seña. Drink or hold.

2018 E. Pira (Chiara Boschis) Barolo Via Nuova
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $199. 00
    Bottle
    $2388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

The Boschis family purchased E.Pira & Figli in 1981, propelling the young Chiara into a role significantly different to that intended with her economics degree. The family were proprietors of Barolo’s historic Giacomo Borgogno estate, where Chiara originally learnt her winemaking skills. Her philosophy is to craft wines that marry the extraordinary power of Barolo with approachability and the Pira wines are all about elegance, great aromatics and lush textures. This has been achieved through strict vineyard management, careful selection and impeccable vinification techniques. In her vineyards, Chiara has always worked without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides and the wines have been certified organic since the 2014 vintage.

Via Nuova was originally made solely from the Terlo vineyard on the hill behind the winery that overlooks the village of Barolo. Since the 2009 vintage, Chiara decided to keep the name but blend this juice with the new parcels from Liste (also in Barolo), Mosconi and Ravera (Monforte) and Gabutti and Baudana (Serralunga).

This is an organic blend of fruit from six MGA sites: Terlo and Liste (in Barolo), Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi (in Monforte d’Alba) and Gabutti and Baudana (in Serralunga d’Alba). The 2018 Barolo Via Nuova is fermented in steel and aged in oak according to time-tested local tradition. This mid-weight blended Barolo has a more prominent herbal or balsam signature at the back of red and purple fruits, licorice and pressed violet. Production is 13,000 bottles. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Chiara Boschis has recently purchased more vineyards in the Mosconi cru located at a cool 370 meters in elevation in Monforte d'Alba. The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2018 Barolo Cannubi is a lovely wine with a classic playlist of true Nebbiolo aromas. This certified organic wine exhibits wild berry, rose, dried lilac and an earthy touch of white truffle. However, the floral aromas and the lifted fruit are the protagonists in this balanced expression. Chiara farms less than one hectare (just over 6,000 square meters) in the celebrated Cannubi MGA with ancient calcareous clay soils from the Miocene era. Production is limited to 3,594 bottles. Sweet orange peel, native strawberry gum and macerated lilli-pilli offers a gentle yet full bodied sweet backbone, which is warmed by the fragrant spicy notes of aniseed myrtle, cloves, nutmeg and cassia. Hot green cardamom and black peppercorn are carried through in the long nutty and coffee-like finish provided by the soft oils of native roasted wattle seed. A balanced savoury spice gin with a long warm finish. Great in a spicy negroni or red snapper and even better in a strong G&T – garnish with a twist of orange. 42% Alc./Vol.

Chiefly (90%) from Les Plantiers—a little-known lieu-dit toward the western base of the slope—with about 10% Les Bessards, Sorrel's 2020 Hermitage looks like its customary supple, silky self, with masses of raspberry fruit, ample weight and richness and a long, elegant finish. It should drink well soon after release and evolve well for more than a decade. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Inky violet color. Juicy red and blue fruit preserve aromas are complemented by suave floral and exotic spice flourishes. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering sappy cherry, blueberry, fruitcake, candied violet and salty olive flavors and a suggestion of star anise. Round, even tannins build steadily through the impressively long finish, which strongly echoes the floral and spice notes. Drink 2029-2039.

Looking first at the classic 2020 Hermitage, it sports a dense purple color as well as a terrific nose of ripe red and black fruits, leather, sappy flowers, and loamy earth. It's medium to full-bodied, wonderfully balanced, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It has a firm edge under its fruit and is going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age. A brilliant bottle of wine, it should be long-lived. Drink after 2027.

Blackcurrant pastille and violet scents; a medium-bodied fresh and juicy style. Not terribly tannic and with low acidity but nonetheless it has a sense of balance. An elegant style. From 60-year-old vines in Les Plantiers (90%) and Les Bessards (10%), all whole-bunch fermented. Drink 2022 - 2030.

Crimson with a light rim. More elegance than power, the fruit floral and lifted, the tannins fine grained and overriding freshness, the alcohol well retained. Good depth all the same and plenty of drive on the finish. Should be accessible relatively early. Drink 2025-2038.

The 2020 Hermitage Le Greal looks like another terrific success. A blend of 90% Le Méal and 10% Les Greffieux that includes a small proportion of white grapes, it delivers waves of vibrant raspberry fruit, embedded with nuances of black olive and salted licorice. Full-bodied and intense, weighing in at around 15.5% alcohol, it's a bold, velvety-textured beauty that must be tasted to be believed. Drink 2025 - 2040.

Glass-staining violet. Assertively perfumed, spice-accented dark berry, kirsch, floral and smoky mineral scents show superb delineation and an earthy suggestion of olive paste. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering energetic boysenberry, blackberry, cherry-cola, fruitcake and violet pastille flavors that deepen and become spicier with aeration. Smoothly blends richness and energy and finishes extremely long and pliant, with youthfully gripping tannins and superb, floral- and mineral-driven persistence.

Even better, the 2020 Hermitage Le Gréal showed brilliantly, and this powerful, concentrated Hermitage is going to be one for the cellar. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as great aromatics of blackberries, new saddle leather, truffle, roasted herbs, and peppered meat, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, mouth-filling texture, building tannins, and a great finish. It's going to take a decade to hit maturity, but this brilliant Hermitage will have 30 years of longevity. Bravo! Drink 2032 - 2050.

Génépi (also known as Mugwort), is a generic term used by the inhabitants of the French Alps to describe several kinds of aromatic plants native to the region. For the local mountaineers, it's a tradition to harvest the flowers in August and macerate them in alcohol. Chartreuse produce two variations of Genepi liqueur, although, so far as we can tell, the difference between them can only be surmised by the name. This version is subtitled "Intense", the other is simply called "Traditional". Both weigh in at 40% ABV. It's assumed that 'Intense' includes extra botanicals in the mix, resulting in a stronger aroma and flavour which is said to be reminiscent of "...garden mint, herbs, vanilla, bitter orange peel and flowers". Having been distillers for four centuries, the monks have perfected a formula derived from several macerations and distillations. 40% Alc./Vol.

Another specialty from the Carthusian monks is this delicately bitter elixir made from the maceration and distillation of gentian root and other botanicals in a fortified wine base. Besides making the world famous Yellow & Green Chartreuse, having been distillers for four centuries, they've perfected a formula derived from several macerations and distillations. A suitable substitute for Suze, this is described as having a strong, gentian-forward earthy bitterness balanced by a sweeter orange note. Try it in a long drink with blackcurrants or cassis liqueur, mixed with soda, or as a substitute for vermouth in a White Negroni. 22.7% Alc./Vol. Big one litre format.

The 2021 Les Pensées de Lafleur is a very pretty wine. Strong floral and spice notes give the Pensées tons of charm. Silky tannins reinforce a feeling of finesse that further adds to its immediacy and appeal. Succulent red cherry fruit, red plum, orange peel, cinnamon and cedar open with time in the glass. Bright acids reappear on the finish to round things out. More than anything else, it is the wine's balance that is most impressive. What a charmer. Drink 2025-2041.

Stunning stuff, the 2021 Château Lafleur Les Pensées has the classic Pomerol sexiness and opulence that defines the vintage. Redcurrants, ripe red fruit, spice, chocolate, and a beautiful sense of minerality and earth all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with round, supple tannins, beautiful purity, and a gorgeous finish. It's the second wine of this estate but as good as just about every Grand Vin out there.

Blackcurrant and black cherry nuances on the nose, smells aromatic but delicate. Strong and intense straight away, you can feel the power here, but it’s cloaked in silk. Smooth and shiny, this is giving confidence and brightness with tang and bite, Gorgeous succulence and crunch but pure too. There’s no sun so you get layers of pixelation and nuance of flavour, hints of spice, coolness, tang and acidity. Taught and tense, strict almost, but you can feel the beginnings of it start to soften. A delicious, pure and straight wine that will be a beauty. Drink 2026 - 2042.

The 2021 Lafleur is a complex and mysterious wine. Tasting it today is like opening an early chapter in a great book. There's plenty of intrigue, but so much has yet to develop. Possessing dynamic energy and dimension, the 2021 is incredibly fascinating. This edition of Lafleur has tremendous pedigree and complexity—a wine of notable nuance and character. An utterly quintessential Lafleur, the 2021 Château Lafleur is a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot. Sensational framboise, woodsmoke, spring flowers, tobacco, and graphite are just some of the nuances, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, multi-dimensional texture, ultra-fine tannins, and a stunning finish. It's clearly the wine of the vintage and has more depth, layers, and length than just about every other wine in the vintage. It deserves 5-7 years in the cellar and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. Not enough can be said about the talent, dedication, and attention to detail that regularly occurs at this address, and clearly the results are in the bottle. Drink 2029 - 2050.

An exceptional success in 2021 and surely one of the best wines of the vintage. An expressive nose, which opens more after 10 minutes in the glass, gives lovely salty soy aromas, ripe and concentrated blackcurrant, wet stone, smoked earth notes with perfume lingering in the background - lilac, violets and irises as well as some sweet chocolate - so much going on. Clearly powerful, ripe and concentrated - intensity on a grand scale - really giving a lot of flavour but tightly packaged in terms of layers and tannins which are finely grained and settle in the mouth giving the frame. The flavours expand slowly and then linger so long on the finish. Direct, linear, determined and persistent with clear definition of each element. Purity, clarity and balance - I just love the intention here - it knows where it's going with a quiet confidence and gives a warm blood and iodine note at the end bringing you right back to Lafleur. Sensational. Drink 2027 - 2050.

The 2021 Hosanna was picked from September 24 to October 6. It presents a beautiful bouquet of delineated, focused black cherries, blueberry and wilted violet scents, plus a hint of gravel in the background. The palate is fresh on the entry, presaging a typical solid structure, and quite saline, demonstrating much more grip and substance on the finish compared to, say, Latour à Pomerol or La Grave. Cellar this for 4–6 years if you can. Drink 2029-2050.

The 2021 Château Hosanna isn't going to match the top vintages of this cuvée, but it's certainly up with the crème de la crème in this vintage. Sporting a vivid ruby/purple hue, notes of cassis, raspberries, tobacco, and scorched earth, medium body, and considerable elegance and purity, it's an incredibly pretty, floral, satisfying effort that makes the most of the 2021 vintage. I'd drink it any time over the coming 15-20 years.

Spices, truffle, espresso, chocolate and red pit fruits with a strong note of flowers and a hint of licorice create the nose. On the palate, the wine is silky, energetic, fresh, supple, polished and vibrant, with layers of dark chocolate, cherries, black plums, coffee bean and blackberries. Yields were low this year at only 28 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place September 24 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2045.

Smoked blackberries and ripe cherry fruit combine with green pepper, black pepper, roses and liquorice spice on the nose, the Cabernet Franc coming through in the aromatics. Devilishly sensual texture and depth of flavour on the palate, it doesn't shout but makes its presence known straight away affirming that it has power but also poise. It's well framed, the tannins so velvety soft and the fruit rich and concentrated - direct and driven - yet with a cool, salty mineral touch that lingers long on the finish. There is an intensity here but at the same time an elegance to the fruit presentation and the finish is elongated. It's charming and will gain further in weight and density over ageing. The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is a regal, elegant wine. Rich and sumptuous, yet classically medium in body, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. A rush of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, blood orange and cinnamon build into the exquisite, layered finish. The 2021 reinforces my view that La Fleur-Pétrus is the wine to focus on in the Moueix range. Hosanna and, especially Trotanoy, are more famous, to be sure, but in 2021 those wines are heavily shaped by the growing conditions of the year, while La Fleur-Pétrus is simply La Fleur-Pétrus. Unquestionably one of the standouts in the Moueix stable is the 2021 Château La Fleur-Petrus, a beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, elegant Pomerol that readers will love. Vivid purple in color with lots of cassis and darker berry fruits, it has classic Pomerol graphite, damp earth, and chalky minerality, some background oak, perfectly integrated tannins, and a great finish. Deep garnet in color, the wine opens with flowers, chocolate, truffles, licorice, espresso, dark plums, and red pit fruits. Plush, soft, and polished on the palate, with supple-textured, silky fruits in the elegant and almost flamboyant, sensuous finish. This is really quite strong, especially when you consider the difficulties in the vintage. The wine blends 95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place September 23 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2049.

Succulent and juicy straight away, this has a little party in your mouth giving the chalky strawberry, perfumed blackcurrant, dark chocolate, liquorice and pencil lead all together - bringing a ton of fruit, spice and acidity with thrilling results. You get a touch of austerity still, the minerality and salinity on the tongue but I love the expression here. Feels well worked, all in harmony with such precision on show. Pure class with a seductive core, gentle frame but intense concentration. Super long finish. The Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot really add that extra touch of deliciousness and intrigue. As readers may remember, this Merlot-dominant blend incorporates fully 37% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a figure that reflects the vintage (which favored these varieties) as well as a tendency to replant with Cabernet rather than Merlot over the last decade. The 2021 Certan de May was picked from September 27 to October 11. There is a touch of herbaceousness on the nose here, a leitmotif of recent vintages that has left me perplexed in warmer growing seasons, though it’s more understandable in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest depth; no greenness here, but there is a welcome touch of pepper toward the finish. This is an improvement for a Pomerol that can hit the ball out of the park if so inclined. Drink 2028-2048.

Good depth and breadth of complexity here showing cassis, black plums, fresh blackberries, iron, cigar and dark chili chocolate. Fragrant red cherries and milk chocolate, super-bright and vibrant from the first sip; the light, almost spritzy texture and touch of sweet and sourness to the red fruit makes this fresh and energetic. The fruit focuses on strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with graphite edges that give the minerality and touch of salinity to the palate also which is so appealing. Lifted and fresh but this also has the deep core and tight centre. The acidity and red fruit are to the fore right now but there is no doubt this is a serious wine with class and a long ageing potential. One I retasted several times. Beguiling. Drink 2026-2048.

The 2021 Trotanoy was picked September 27 to October 4. This has one of the most marine-influenced aromatic profiles among the Pomerol wines tasted, very well defined and even uncompromising in some ways, revealing touches of iris flower and sea cave. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. A typical Trotanoy structure: maybe aloof in some ways, yet compelling at the same time. Sappy on the persistent finish. This should turn into a very cerebral Pomerol that will appeal to those who adore this estate. Not for the first time, this is JP Moueix's star this year. Drink 2030-2065.

Classic Trotanoy austerity and structure define the 2021 Château Trotanoy, which is tight and reserved on the palate, with medium-bodied richness and ripe yet certainly present tannins. Offering solid aromatics of red and black fruits, graphite, liquid violets, and loamy earth, it has rock solid mid-palate depth, and while it's not massive, it's no lightweight either. It will benefit from bottle age.

Asian spice, truffle, chocolate, espresso, fennel and dark red pit fruits are all over the place, on the nose and palate here. Classic, vibrant, refined, and also reticent at the moment, this reminds me in some ways of the best attributes from previous classic vintages that are now aged into maturity. The finish is filled with dark, red pit fruits, espresso, spice, and a touch of fresh mint with a hint of salted plums on the backend. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. The harvest took place September 27-October 4. Drink from 2026-2055.

Smoked wild berries, with fragrant cherries on the nose. The texture stands out straight away, smooth, broad, muscular but also sleek, refined and precise. Flavours of bright cherries and raspberries with smoked earth and liquorice nuances coarse across the palate lifted by the acidity but not overpowered by it. The gently gripping tannins have a chalky, liquorice tang to them, settling on the tongue and providing the support and frame. This feels well worked, quietly confident - extremely well delivered and charming. It has both the concentration and glamour that Pomerol does so well. A layered but also lifted take on the vintage with clear ageing potential. Drink 2027 - 2050.

The 2021 Bélair-Monange is a very beautiful wine. Fruit forward and punchy, the 2021 makes quite a first impression. Ripeness is naturally less pushed here than in recent vintages - that is the year - but it is a style that works so well, as this site offers plenty of richness on its own. A rush of inky red/purplish fruit fills out the layers nicely. There's not a ton of nuance or detail yet, but that will likely come in time. This is very nicely done. Drink 2031-2061.

Medium to full body with creamy, velvety tannins. Polished and plush. Pretty spice notes, such as white pepper and cloves to the ripe dark-plum and berry fruit. Some pine cones. Fine, ripe and textured. Concentrated for the vintage. Wonderful length, too.

The 2021 Château Belair-Monange continues to impress, and you could put this up with the top wines in the vintage with no issues. Floral notes of blue fruits, violets, chalky minerality, and spice define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a good mix of both richness and freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. Turning more mineral-laced, sappy, and floral as it sits in the glass, this is a complete, incredibly classy Saint-Emilion that will round into form with just a few years of bottle age. If you haven't heard of this château, trust me on this one, get on its bandwagon, as it's destined to be one of the greats in Saint-Emilion.

Deep ruby in color, the wine is filled with black raspberries, flowers, mint, and spices. On the palate, the wine is plush, soft, polished, fresh, vibrant, and long, finishing with crushed rocks, stones, chalk, and bright, fresh, red fruits, with just a touch of spearmint on the backend. The wine blends 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, Drink from 2023-2049.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider

Cool blue fruit touches on the nose, excellent acidity gives a rush of succulent and mouth watering cherry and strawberry fruit before this settles quite quickly revealing the minerality so characteristic of this estate. Chalky, wet stone and graphite touches come in with a saltiness that perfectly balances the sweet and concentrated red fruits. This feels refined and well worked with a brightness that is so enjoyable. The 1% Cabernet Franc gives structure and backbone. It's a light style, this is more delicate and refined and all the better for it showing the class of the winemaking and nuances of the terroir. A real beauty. Drink 2027 - 2050.

    $2100.00 Dozen

    Closure: Cork

The Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. 10,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2024 - 2048.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry, mint and white pepper linger. Drink 2027-2039.

Offers a bright, pure expression of cherry, strawberry, rose and grassy aromas and flavors underscored by a vein of minerality, with tannins that flex their muscles on the long finish. Intense but balanced, with tension that bodes well for future evolution. Best from 2026 through 2043.

    $2100.00 Dozen

    Closure: Cork

Ovello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.

    Other Reviews....
One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process. Drink 2024 - 2045.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don't think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind. Drink 2027-2039.

Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043.

Pajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage. Production is 6,666 bottles. Drink 2024 - 2045.

Proximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, as well as a relative warmth in the early morning hours due to its proximity to the valley floor. The slightly higher soil fertility here gives to the wine a smoother character, with soft tannins and aromas that usually tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017. Drink 2025 - 2048.

Rabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lies between the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North. The meeting of these two different soils give Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure.

    Other Reviews....
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. 14,438 bottles were produced. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. Black fruit, menthol, licorice, melted road tar, game and menthol develop in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Drink 2027-2039.

Not far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.

    Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo (with 10,000 bottles released) has a mineral character and a sleek, firm approach that gives this wine its special identity. Seven up for Charles Heidsieck; the seventh release of their magnificent Blanc des Millénaires Champagne, the 2007. Their charismatic chef de caves, Cyril Brun, describes the wine as ‘dangerous’, as in dangerously good, and it is hard not to concur. The legendary Daniel Thibault, who made the first Blanc des Millénaires in 1983, was aspiring to make a very specific style of Chardonnay, rich and indulgent at the same time as being classical and rigorous of construction, a deft paradox in other words. The 2007, child of a cooler, more linear vintage than the rather heady 2006, has achieved this ambition with great aplomb. Cyril is confident that stylistically the 2007 will be closest to the 2004 and the 1995, both greatly lauded and both of which have had an unfailing capacity to win virtually every competition into which they are entered. The pale gold shimmers invitingly, its mousse discreet yet persistent, its aromatics hitherto dominated by notes of grapefruit, yuzu, citrus and quince, behind that sourdough, flint-stone and intimations of toast and honey, both of which will become more pronounced over the splendours of a long life. 20% each of five great villages, all but Vertus ranked as Grand Cru, have provided the raw materials for this most magisterial of Blanc de Blancs Champagnes. Dosed at 7.3g/L (the lowest ever at Charles) and disgorged in July 2021, with a smart new bottle design. Drink 2022 - 2032.

You could argue that this wine changed Italian wine, because it was the first to fully embrace the potential of Cabernet Franc in the bel paese. The Le Macchiole 2018 Paleo has a spicy and tangy personality with dark fruit, bitter chocolate and tarry smoke. Coming back to my open bottle 24 hours later, I got some green olive and rosemary essence. The mouthfeel fleshes out considerably, and there is beautiful structure to hold it firmly together. Other vintners in Bolgheri have told me of their difficulties with Cabernet Franc in the 2018 vintage, which saw rain toward the end of the season. This wine feels magically immune to those issues and probably means that the expert vineyard team harvested at the right moment. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Le Macchiole's 2018 Paleo Rosso is an unbelievably beautiful wine. It is also very young. The aromatics are total seduction, but otherwise the 2018 is quite reticent. Bright floral notes and red-toned fruit give the 2018 considerable energy and verve as varietal Franc aromas and flavors start to take shape over time. Readers will have to be patient. The 2018 needs at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Even so, it is pretty appealing today. Drink 2026-2048.

Since 2012 Paleo has been fermented in concrete tanks using selected yeast for almost 12 days, with temperatures held at 26°C - relatively cool for a red. It is then aged for 24 months in 100% new oak. Sometimes the use of second fill barrels is possible for the 25% of the wine, however all the time the toastiness of the barrels is long and light (very soft at the beginning then strong). The fresh 2018 vintage enhances the well known aromatic richness of this wine where the typical dried eucalyptus note is completed by menthol, vibrant clay minerality, leather and star anise. Elegant tannins and crisp acidity complete the picture. Drink 2021 - 2040.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums, chocolate and mushrooms. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Round and creamy with harmony and balance. Fresh, yet focused, with chocolate and black-fruit character. Long, flavorful finish with some spices. Drinkable now, but best from 2022.

A profound red, with earth and tar notes dominating black cherry, blackberry and herbal flavors. Tightens up midpalate, before dense, chewy tannins weigh in on the extended finish. Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2042.

Combining varietal sensations of Cabernet Franc as well as sunny aromas recalling the Tuscan coast, this fantastic red opens with aromas recalling raspberries, black currants, Mediterranean scrub and violets. The smooth, delicious palate combines body and elegance, offering juicy blackberries, star anise and wild herbs before a saline mineral finish. Fresh acidity and supple tannins provide seamless support and balance.

Le Macchiole's 2018 Messorio is soft and rich with impressive depth and intensity, all delivered with the softness that only the Merlot grape can manage. This important wine unfolds first to rich cherry and blackberry and then yields softly to secondary notes of spice, baker's chocolate and toasted almond. There is some youthful tightness in the mouth, with Merlot tannins that are hitched to firmness and softness, while showing impressive length all the while. The mouthfeel is most impressive, thanks to its seamless and supple nature that glides smoothly over the palate. Drink 2023 - 2045.

The 2018 Messorio is an attractive wine, but it also feels like the most marked by the cooler style of the year. Readers will find a mid-weight Messorio endowed with striking inner sweetness and perfume, if not quite the textural richness that is the norm here. I have seen even the more delicate of Messorios blossom beautifully over time, and suspect that will be the case here as well. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. Drink 2026-2043.

This is very complex, offering tobacco, brown sugar, black olives and currants. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and layered, with very fine tannins and a long, structured finish. Hints of new wood complement the long, cool fruit and phenolics. Give this three or four years to open. Try after 2025.

According to Cinzia Merli, producer of Le Macchiole, 2018 vintage is not her favourite. 'We can't compare it with the more red fruited 2017 and the concentration of 2019 is another matter,' she said. Having said that, this is one of her best Messorios of the last few years. On the nose it comes across as slightly herbal, with the leafy character of Merlot, loaded with restrained cassis, lead pencil and earthy clay minerality. Open-knit aromas of menthol are also present. The attack is smooth and velvety, with huge presence on the mid-palate where oaky tannins are still present. Full and refreshing with extremely youthful character. Drink 2021 - 2048.

This wine's main themes are plum, blackberry and black cherry flavors, with perfumed aromas and earth, iron, tobacco and dried herb accents. Dense, firm and dry on the finish, where a green, herbal element echoes. This is underlined by a beam of acidity from beginning to end. Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

Whistle Pig PiggyBack 6 Year Old 100% Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    UNITED STATES
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

There have been a few iterations of the Piggy Back Rye, some finished in different barrels, others bottled at a higher ABV. This 'general release' for Australia aims to capture the classic, spicy side of the grain. It started in the summer of 2018, when late distiller, Dave Pickerell and Master Blender, Pete Lynch, returned to WhistlePig’s warehouses to realise their dream of creating the ideal rye whiskey for sipping and cocktails. It was launched in select US markets in 2019 as a permanent addition to the WhistlePig core range and was the final product Dave Pickerell created for the company before his passing.

It’s a 100% rye aged six years. The original was bottled at a purposeful 96.56 proof, in tribute of Dave Pickerell’s birth year – 1956. This edition lands at 45%. At that slightly lower proof it remains a charismatic whiskey that delivers the goods. The fusion of ripe peach and grain aromas also includes crusty rye as well as hints of ginger bread, vanilla and mint. Medium to full bodied, it's beautifully rounded in the mouth (borderline buttery) with a high ease of drinkability that lands on the sweeter side - think cardamon, cocoa, cafe cremes and fresh-baked rye with hints of anise lifting the finish. The expected rye spices don't fully develop, but this remains substantial enough to enjoy straight and will contribute texture to Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Vieux Carrés and more. Keen eyed followers of the brand will note the pig that graces the front label is not wearing the standard WhistlePig top hat, but rather a Stetson hat in honour of Dave Pickerell’s favourite head-ware. The bottle is also a slight departure from the standard Whistle Pig shape, making it more manoeuvrable for bartenders. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... [96.56 proof bottling] The whiskey was created with cocktails in mind, but, as always, our review looks at the unadulterated product. Let’s dig in. The nose is boldly spicy in the way that 100% rye invariably is, with big cinnamon and clove notes complemented by a bold barrel char influence. Aromas of cherry pits, apricot, and an elusive tangerine note and some intrigue, but it’s the hint of maple syrup that drew me in the most.

There’s a lot going on, and with time in glass, the woodier notes begin to dominate, taking on a distinctly smoky character. That follows over the palate, which exhibits a lot of peppery bite at the start, though notes of salted caramel, gingersnaps, and banana walnut pancakes temper that heat. I get a mildly beefy edge later in the game, too. The finish isn’t as hot as expected, but it’s the lingering, somewhat raw spice quality that endures here the longest. All told it’s a fairly rustic spirit, a bit rough around the edges but dazzling in its complexity. Pickerell probably wouldn’t have had it any other way. - drinkhacker.com

Jack Daniels Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey (1000ml) - NO GIFT BOX
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.

According to Alastair Smart, writing for the Telegraph, Jack Daniel's whisky was Sinatra's signature drink.
"He would rarely be seen for long without a tumbler in his hand. The Washington Post even went so far as to nickname him 'The Bourbon Baritone' (apart from 'Ol' Blue Eyes' another popular nickname was 'The Innkeeper'). The signal for party-time at Twin Palms came when Sinatra hoisted a flag bearing the Jack Daniel's logo above the mansion. It was perhaps fitting, then, that Sinatra was buried in 1998 with a bottle of JD slipped into his coat pocket."

To commemorate the half century association between Frank and Jack, the Jack Daniels Distillery have released this special edition. Packaged in presentation carton with booklet.

Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Offers a classic JD sniff with aromas of burnt orange, fresh sawn oak, dilute maple syrup, vanilla fudge and a peppery kick. The extra ABV makes for full bodied Jack. Lovely smokey oak/hickory key notes hover over latent vanilla, cinnamon and caramel. A tad grippy to finish but rounds off with an attractive sweet Bourbon flourish. A definite step up from the 40% ABV bottling. Try this on its own before drenching it with Coke. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This new Jack Daniel’s offering is marketed as being “bold and smooth.” It certainly is bolder when compared to the standard Jack Daniel’s offering, with a mélange of corn, creamy vanilla, toasted caramel, bright citrus, and dry resinous oak spiked with cinnamon. The smoothness ends, however, when the oak grip intensifies on the finish. Adding ice does tame the oak, if that’s your thing. Still, I’d prefer the oak be more restrained.
