2000 Ardbeg Vintage_Y2K 23 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $1699. 00
    Bottle
    $20388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

"A glitch in the Ardware" reads the inside of the futuristic presentation box. Welcome to the first in a new limited edition series, created during a milestone year at Ardbeg. Each one will represent a different side of the distillery with no two whiskies alike. ‘Y2K’ is pronounced ‘Year-Two-K’. While the year 2000 will be remembered by many for bootcut jeans, flip phones and the elusive millennium bug, it went down in Ardbeg history for very different reasons. Following decades of neglect, the Distillery had been saved from extinction by The Glenmorangie Company in 1997 and meticulously restored. As the clock ticked over from 1999 to 2000, Ardbeg was returning to full production. And while the rest of the world partied, with many distilleries shut down in fear of computerised chaos, its dedicated stillmen stayed up all night to keep the spirit flowing.

Crafted with some of the very first spirit of the millennium, the inaugural edition in the Ardbeg Vintage Y2K series is unlike anything before. It was distilled in the historic still which served Ardbeg for 51 years, before being retired in 2001. And with an increased rigour applied to cask selection under the new ownership, the whisky was laid down in some of the finest bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks around. The result is a single malt jampacked with bright zesty notes and intensely sweet, sooty flavours – a smoky anomaly never to be repeated. Aromas of lemon balsam reminisce with linseed oil and heather honey, while soot and peppermint stir up memories of ground coffee and aniseed on the palate.

Says Dr Bill Lumsden, Master Distiller, "Ardbeg Vintage Y2K is a phenomenal souvenir of a pivotal year at Ardbeg. Crafted at the dawn of a new era in our historic still, this ultra-rare whisky has been stowed carefully at the Distillery ever since. Herbal, citrusy and sweet on the nose, before soot, peppermint and coffee explode on the palate, this retro collectors’ classic is pure Ardbeg nostalgia.”

Other reviews... Distilled in Ardbeg’s historic still that was retired in 2001 after 51 years of service, this vintage has a sweet and zesty nose with coal soot, honey-lemon lozenges, Peppermint Pattie, and traces of black licorice. Silky smooth on the tongue, with sweet vanilla, lemon, peppermint creams, doughnut custard, ashy peat smoke, and orange pith, with creamy coffee, aniseed, and vanilla on the finish. No water needed. 94 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from the producers... Colour: Pale amber. On the nose: Herbal, sweet and fragrant, with a distant, subtly fragrant smokiness. A closer look reveals tangy notes of lemon balm, linseed oil and candied walnuts. Theflavourintensifies with a splash ofwater, followed by notes of heather honey, creosote and some tarpaulin. On the palate: A tingling, sorbet-like structure, vibrating on the tongue. The initialflavouris intensely sweet, with a burst of aniseed, toffee, digestive biscuits, peppermint, menthol, tar and coffee grounds. Sooty and tarry flavours then develop. Finish: The long, lingering aftertaste reveals notes of antiseptic lozenges, bitter orange peel andoaktannins.

    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

With dwindling stocks leading to a shortage of age-statements, Nikka has offered a number of lower tier expressions filling out their portfolio with younger-leaning releases such as this one. The blend is made from Miyagikyo and Yoichi malts balanced by the lightness of Coffey grain whisky. Some components are matured in ex-sherry casks for added richness - hence the label title. 40% Alc./Vol.

KWV 5 Year Old Brandy (750ml)
    Suider Paarl, SOUTH AFRICA
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Brandy can justifiably lay claim to the title of South Africa's favourite spirit, selling more than white spirit and whisky markets combined. And so it should. With a heritage dating back to the late 17th century when early Dutch pioneers in the Cape quickly worked out that the typically Mediterranean climate and favourable soils were ideal for growing grapes - wine, and ultimately, brandy was produced. The quality has more than kept pace with demand.

South Africa remains a world-class producer (it’s also one of the few brandy making areas outside Cognac that still conforms to age-old Cognac traditions). The quality/price ratio combined with the range on offer is compelling. The KWV company is a case in point. It first distilled in 1926 and has been receiving praise for its brandies ever since. Master Distiller, Kobus Gelderblom is at the helm. In 2010 KWV was awarded a gold medal for the 20 Year Old Brandy at the London International Spirits Competition (it’s worth noting that only four brandies were awarded golds at the competition). A single estate bottling from KWV was subsequently honoured as “Best Brandy in the World’ by the same group. A remarkable achievement that continues to grow. Gelderblom has a passion for Pinotage with Chardonnay his other preference.

KWV's five year old blends pot still brandy with unaged wine spirits. Its opulent bouquet includes dried figs, raisins, clove and toffee apple. The mouthfeel is plush and soft, mirroring the aromas with flavours of dried figs, Christmas pudding and cafe-creme combined with a gently warming, spicy flourish. It's remarkably well balanced, with a persistence that brings notes of toffee apple and vanilla to the spicy afterglow. A very drinkable all-rounder and great value. 43% Alc./Vol.

A hefty bouquet precedes a heftier delivery. A hard one to nail down but there’s no pronounced peat so if it’s from Springbank it’s a Hazelburn distillate or Glengyle? A slight grittiness to the mouthfeel reminds us of Glen Scotia, as does the slightly prickly attack. The sprite finish is flattened by the sweetness of the wine before a rush of coastal freshness relieves the sugars. Initially the wine input smothers, but it gets better as you go, which brings us back to Springbank… Whatever the mix, it's very characterful. Finished in a muscat cask. 312 bottles for the Australian importer. 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

2021 Domaine de Trevallon Alpilles Rouge
    Provence, FRANCE
    $240. 00
    Bottle
    $2880.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%
    Closure: Cork

Formed in the early 1970's, with the first vintage 1976, Domaine de Trevallon have become one of the most famous and respected properties in Southern France. After graduating his architecture degree, Eloi Durrbach set south aiming to make natural wines with a sense of place and ability to age with ease. Planting now comprises 15 hectares of red grapes, equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, plus 2 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne. All grapes have been grown and treated organically since their planting.

Alpilles Rouge is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah, aged for 24 months in old foudre and barrels with a minimum amount of racking during this time. The grapes are not destemmed, and vinification occurs with natural yeasts and no sulphur. While this wine is generally opulent and indulgent in its youth, it famously rewards time in the cellar, beautifully evolving slowly over decades.

    Other Reviews....
From a marginally cooler, damper year, the Syrah and Cabernet are already beginning to meld together. Tightly youthful and closed, this needs either advance decanting or be allowed to age for a few years. Fresh, vibrant notes of blue flowers and dark berry fruit on the nose opens out to concentrated, ripe blackberries, the vibrant kick of sloes and powerful, bitter black chocolate tannins, finishing with aromatic notes of black pepper and sweet allspice. Drink 2025-2045.

Matured in a mixture of French and American oak barrels for 18 months. Pitch black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Potent aniseed, dark plum and black cherry scents fill the nostrils complimented by some toasty vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth notes. Rich aniseed, dark plum and black cherry fruits carry ample flesh across the medium to full bodied palate with notions of toasty vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth the underbelly. Sturdy tannin construction with a lengthy finish that has a lingering toasty oak component running through it.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

A rich, oak-influenced style in keeping with the producer's style of red-wine making which demands further bottle ageing. Tight and focused, it delivers a complex array of scents and flavours, of clove, cardamon spice, violet with a thread of herbal complexity before settling into a solid core of plums, blueberries and cassis. The overarching influence of oak resonates in tandem with burly tannins. Drink by 2031.

This is a single site Cabernet from McLaren Vale, planted in 1993. Ten days on skins, after pressing the fermentation was finished in barrel, with around 30% of it new French oak, followed by 14 months maturation. Deep maroon, the wine offers rich chocolatey notes, dry herbs, tobacco leaves, mulberries, smoked meats, plums and soy. Oak is evident, but it is not intrusive. There is a supple texture, firm finish and very good length. Sleek tannins. Lovely example of a warm climate Cabernet which will provide excellent drinking for the next eight to twelve years. From the estate Firehawk Farm; two-thirds destemmed and crushed over whole bunches for a seven-day ferment, then pressed to mainly seasoned oak for 12 months' maturation. A spicy rendition of grenache, this is also quite deep, though very much lifted and respectful of the integrity of fruit flavour. Davidson plum, baked raspberry tart, rhubarb, white pepper and celery salt, cinnamon and clove. It’s got some moody depth and bright fruitfulness, the tannins dryly assertive. Drink by 2028.

Feudo Montoni enjoys a long history in the Valledolmo region of central western Sicily. Their cellars are housed in the baglio (typical Sicilian court square building) built by the noble Arogenese family in 1469. The property was purchased by current owner and winemaker Fabio Sireci’s grandfather Rosario in the late 1800s.
This Catarratto comes from the ‘Masso’ cru, which is one of the highest vineyards on the Feudo Montoni Estate at 700m and named because of its rocky-sandy soil. The vines are aged between 55 and 60 years old but have been grafted onto very old bush vines producing fruit that’s dense and full flavoured. This iron rich soil contributes to a wine that is intensely fresh and mineral. After concrete fermentation, the wine is kept on lees for 6 months with some batonnage before being bottled.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a glimmer of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense pear and lime scents infused with fresh herbs are trailed by some Granny Smith apple, slate and mineral notes. Highly energised the palate features a racy flavour profile of lime, green apple and mandarin fruits infused with a mix of Mediterranean herbs, wet slate and saline characters. Crisp acidity. The long snappy finish laced with minerality.
    Drink over the next year.

2022 Comando G La Bruja de Rozas Garnacha
    Sierra de Gredos, SPAIN
    $54. 99
    Bottle
    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

It’s time to leave your preconceptions at the door, as Comando G produce Garnacha (Grenache) unlike anyone else in Spain. Comando G’s Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia craft Garnacha up in the near inaccessible hills of the Sierra de Gredos mountains which are miles away (figuratively and literally) from the dark, powerful, brooding wines of Priorat that hit the scene 20 years or so ago. These are a different breed of Garnacha, light, ethereal, built on tension and finesse. There’s no lack of concentration however, and they have much more in common with high-end Burgundy than what you would normally associate with Spain. Word is well and truly out on these special wines, with demand far outstripping supply and prices skyrocketing on the secondary market.

    Other Reviews....
There is a change in the 2022 La Bruja. It is no longer a village wine from Rozas de Puerto Real. In 2022, it is a regional wine, and in 2023, it also will be a regional wine but from Ávila, from the Cebreros appellation, as they are focusing their work there. It's a juicy and aromatic Garnacha, very much in the Comando G style, with good ripeness, 14% alcohol and more in the style of the 2020. It has a medium-bodied palate and a sapid finish with contained ripeness and fine granite granularity. They macerated less to adapt to the vintage, and it partly fermented with less skins. It's a more approachable La Bruja, expressive, open and more fruit-driven, more in a Morgon style. 56,487 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Drink 2024-2029.

The Rozas 1er Cru has a slight change in 2022 and turned into a village wine, the 2022 Rozas. They selected the best five vineyards that used to go to the Rozas 1er Cru, vineyards they have worked since 2012. In this warmer vintage, they did a softer vinification, with less maceration and more fermentation without skins, to avoid over-ripeness and notes of black fruit in the wine. It has more fruit and some silty tannins, which are more like Italian tannins in the more Mediterranean years like this 2022. This village is more subject to the changes in the years, with more herbal and ethereal notes in the wines in cooler years and juicier and with more marked tannins in the warmer ones. It has 14.5% alcohol and is more jovial, definitely not banal. 10,992 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Drink 2024-2032.

The 2022 Navatalgordo, a village red from the village of the same name, is one of two completely new village wines from 2022, as the one from Rozas is an evolution of the Rozas 1er Cru. This was produced to reflect the character of the village, showcasing wines with tension and sharpness. It comes from soils with lots of quartz and was made with their own grapes and ones purchased from growers that have been working together with them at an average 1,100 meters in altitude. It fermented with full clusters in concrete and oak vats with 35- to 40-day maceration, and its élevage was in concrete and oak foudres. This village produces wines with lower alcohol, lower pH and higher acidity, even in warmer years like 2022. And the wine has more color, even if the alcohol is lower, from the cold. It's a wine that needs more time, more Barolo with a chalky character and slow development. It has a very floral and expressive nose, with electric acidity, and is tense, serious. This is the 2022 that feels less like 2022... Only with time in the glass did it develop some meaty aromas (Bovril?) and spiciness, which pointed at a warmer year and more Gevrey character. It has a contained 13% alcohol and a pH of around 3.0! Incredible parameters for a year like 2022. 11,047 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023. Only a little sulfur was added at bottling time, never before, as they feel the profile of the wine is more apt to work without added sulfur. Drink 2024-2034.

The 2021 Las Umbrías is completely unusual. For a start, it's cloudy. They decided to bottle it like that, without racking, and the nose feels like a Poulsard from the Jura produced in Chambolle-Musigny, wild, lively and expressive. It has notes of red fruit, hints of tangerine and flowers. It's cold, ethereal, delicate, with almost unnoticeable tannins, and it's full of crystalline energy, quartz and iron. This is a vineyard that marks the vintages like no other. In great vintages, it has great finesse; and in warmer years, it suffers more. This is not a vintage for all consumers, as the wine is quite different from previous years, with a contained 13.5% alcohol and a vibrant and characterful palate. Magical. A total of 1,490 bottles were filled in March 2023, unfiltered and unfined, as direct as possible from the tank, where it was racked directly from the foudre. Drink 2024-2034.

Confidently cloudy and definitely the most cloudy Comando G vintage so far. Wild herbs, tile, white pepper and freshly cut grapefruit. Lovely peppery funk here. Intense and peppery on the palate but very airy in form. Really juicy and flavorful with a long, intense finish. Drink now.

2021 Comando G El Tamboril Garnacha

    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 13.5%

The 2021 El Tamboril Tinto felt closed and austere like no other wine from the portfolio. This single vineyard from the village of Navatalgordo, the most austere and cold of the villages where they work, is also the highest altitude where they work. After years of working the vineyard, they were able to buy it in 2021; and in 2022, they made even bigger changes in the viticulture (they put in individual sticks for each vine). At 1,200 meters above sea level, this is the coldest place in the coldest vintage, and the soils are as rocky and mineral as it gets. This is a serious and mineral red with a moderate 13.5% alcohol, great freshness and acidity and a palate with very fine, chalky, Barolo-like tannins that make you salivate. It should develop in bottle for a loooooong time. 1,3,42 bottles were filled in April 2023. Drink 2025-2040.

A little more brambly here with wild raspberries, pomegranate seeds and some fresh grapefruit. Broader, chalky and vertical tannins here with an extensive finish. More of a Barolo stye. Better from 2026.

The pale, delicate and ethereal 2021 Tumba del Rey Moro feels more austere than any other vintage of this single-vineyard wine. It comes from vines at 1,100 meters above sea level on granite soils in the village of Villanueva de Ávila and has a notable absence of fruit. Instead, it's mineral and floral, with subtle herbal notes ("piparra" peppers again!). It was harvested around the 12th of October, and by that time, the grapes had had a full development of aromas and flavors. The wine finished with 14% alcohol but with gobsmacking balance and freshness. The alcohol is not noticeable, a constant across the portfolio. The nose was shy at first and took time to develop, but when it did, it was layered and complex, with more Burgundian floral notes. The palate is super austere with lots of energy, reminiscent of liquid granite, with grip and light. It's a sharp vintage of Tumba del Rey Moro. 1,712 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023. Drink 2024-2033.

So ethereal, scented and precise on the nose with huge complexity, but everything remains soft-spoken and quiet. Wet stones, white pepper, tile, and mineral. A little less round and loud than 2020, but this is super nuanced and refined, showing more linearity with chalky tannins. Lovely austerity here, completely stripped down. Ungrafted, north-facing vineyard. Drink or hold.

The 2024 vintage was a warm and dry season which produced pristine, high quality Pinot Gris fruit. Approximately 10% of the wine was wild fermented in older oak barrels and 10% wild fermented in tank; this adds complexity and texture to the wine. The remaining juice was fermented using a range of fermentation techniques and yeast strains to enhance the aromatic characters of the wine.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. Intense pear and Jonathan apple aromas fill the nose followed by some musk, subtle honeysuckle and delicate spicy quince notes. Rich, luscious pear and ripe apple fruits infused with musk are delivered with terrific concentration and carry a full, rounded shape. Subtle honeysuckle and quince elements lie underneath. Brisk acidity lends freshness to the long supple and enveloping finish. In a word, delicious.

Sauternes enthusiasts have long known that across the Garonne River they can procure what is arguably the greatest value wine in sweet white Bordeaux, which in exceptional years produces a wine equal to Sauternes which may sell at two or three times its price. This bizarre anomaly is the Chateau Fayau Cadillac, and although the wine cannot be labelled Sauternes as such, it is essentially identical in every way.

A vinous bargain when one considers the prices of top Sauternes houses.

Leaping out of the glass are honeyed peach and apricot scents followed by some marmalade, sweet pineapple and delicate spice notes. Luscious yet not heavy or cloying, coating the palate are honey drenched flavours of apricot and peach which are intermeshed with notions of pineapple, marmalade, subtle toffee apple and spice. An underlying freshness lends itself to an agile feel across the long and exotic yet elegant finish.

This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 12 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months, before bottling at 1.2 grams of residual sugar.

Sweet yet fresh with smoked meats, brine and a burgeoning creaminess while effusive aromatics deliver a steady undercurrent of vanillas, keeping pace with oozing peat reek; by the finish, it's ashy, peppery, tangy and citric - all at once. The power and persistence mean you can play around with water to release more of the oils or just let this flavour bomb settle over ice. Either way it's a cracker. 146 bottles only for the Australian importer. 57.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Present day Glenallachies are either heavily oaked or wine-driven - or both - placing them alongside some of the biggest malts on the market. Here we have an importer's selection that leans away from the extremes of Billy Walker’s official bottlings, straddling a line between older Glendronachs or Glengoynes, making for something more sophisticated in the genre. At first taste, leather and bitter peel lead into biscuity malt followed by juicy oloroso; time in the glass develops hints of honeyed cereals, curaçao, cinnamon buns, cafe cremes, walnuts and dark chocolate. It takes water well, but on its own this is perfectly approachable and worthy of the attention of fans of complex, drier-styled malts. Kudos to the Australian importer for bringing something different to the table! Eleven years in a 600L sherry butt / twenty one months in a 1st fill Oloroso cask. Ultra-pleasing chardonnay here. Even, flowing richness metered by bright acidity, all the hallmark stone fruits, apple, woody spices, nougat, vanilla going on. Supple but with a faint chalkiness, great extension of flavour, a general sense of vibrancy and drinkability. This has intentionally been made to ensure it drinks well when young, as well as into the future. That it is brilliant value is simply a bonus. A combination of whole berries and those crushed, with several weeks on skins before sixteen months maturation in older French oak barriques. Inky black, the nose exhibits notes of dark chocolate, mocha, roast meats, black cherries and leather. A savoury style with fine balance, there is good intensity here which runs the full journey plus silky tannins and impressive length. The palate sees notes of warm earth and spicy sausages emerge with saturated flavours throughout. Like this a lot and can certainly be enjoyed now, but will also age for a decade at least. From the Moreton Bay block in the Upper Tintara Vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region, this is the fourth release of this wine. It was fermented in the old slate fermenters, which were built back in 1863 (they fell out of use in 1927, but Andrew Hardy restored one in 2018). This was from the winery used by Andrew’s great-great-grandfather. The fruit was hand bucketed into the fermenter, regularly hand-plunged, then bucketed back out before pressing into barrel, 20 months in French oak. Just 4,900 bottles made of this superb Shiraz. Dark maroon. The nose is all chocolate, cassis, cigar box, tobacco leaves and blackberries. There is good complexity here, and knife-edge balance while exhibiting such richness and a supple texture, seamless and utterly gorgeous before an extremely long finish. Everything is in balance to ensure a very long future, at least twenty years, but this is so good now, so hard to imagine much will be left by then. Drink 2023-2053.

Aubert de Villaine handed over management to his nephew Pierre de Benoist in 2000, with Pierre passionate about rediscovering the identity of the Côte Chalonnaise as a whole and of Bouzeron in particular. These wines embody purity, precision, and a deep respect for Burgundy’s traditions.

This reference Aligoté is riper in 2022 than it often is and lacks the bright acidity typical in cooler years such as 2021. However, it provides a moreish choice for refreshing current drinking, with alluring aromas of ripe green apple, apricot and nectarines. The grapes are from old massal-selection vines, hand-harvested and fermented in large oak uprights. A modern classic. Organic. Drink 2024 - 2030.

Domaine de Villaine, nestled in the village of Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise, is renowned for crafting elegant, terroir-driven wines. Founded by Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the estate focuses on organic viticulture and minimal intervention, producing standout expressions of Aligoté Doré, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

The 2022 Mercurey Les Montots has a fragrant bouquet of chalk-tinged red fruit, raspberry and cranberry, with a touch of smoke and undergrowth emerging with time. A light-framed Mercurey, the palate is medium-bodied and crisp, with tart red fruit and just a very small attenuation on the finish. Fine. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London. Drink 2025-2033.

Pretty, cool and airy aromas of apple, pear, acacia and a whiff of lemon are complemented by delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors that possess fine volume, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, clean, dry and well-balanced finale. This is a lovely Puligny villages and worth considering. Drink through 2028+.

Pale yellow, firm bouquet as a little bit of sulphur at this stage. Clean, brisk, medium powerful. Fills out really well on the palate, with a grapey generosity. More spritz in a second sample, a tiny bit more alcohol, but excellent length. The third is crunchy and spicy. Excellent. Seven plots in all across the village Drink from 2027-2032.

A slightly riper nose reflects notes of petrol, white peach and rosemary oil. There is more size and weight to the richer, even opulent and generously proportioned, medium weight flavors that terminate in a bitter lemon-inflected, attractively dry and long if mildly rustic finale. Drink through 2027+.

Planted in 2013 close by the Château de Chassagne. Clear pale lemon yellow, with quite an open bouquet, light apple fruit, without the complete feel of the Puligny. A little youthful bitterness, but good length, an attractive wine which does not quite challenge the Puligny. Drink from 2026-2030.

A discreet application of wood sets off cool and layered aromas of the essence of white orchard fruit, citrus confit and acacia blossom. There is again fine richness to the medium-bodied flavors that retain better detail on the mineral-driven and focused finish that delivers sneaky good length. This isn't exactly chiseled but it's close and a wine that should repay up to a decade of keeping. Drink through 2029+.

A full fresh pale lemon yellow. The bouquet is deliciously elegant, with the charming floral qualities that we rather missed in the vintages 2018-2020. The acidity melds in correctly with an impressive weight of fruit on the palate. Golden notes, with a welcome youthful bitterness. Medium plus length, quite accessible but with structure nonetheless. Drink from 2028-2034.

    Colchagua Valley, CHILE

    $3240.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The vineyard, planted in the 1910s using a unique French massal selection, is located in the Apalta Valley, near the town of Santa Cruz on the western side of the Colchagua Valley. In 1994 the property was acquired by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet, with a vision to highlight the exceptional terroir of Apalta drawing upon their French expertise. Clos Apalta was born soon after, in 1997, as the iconic wine of the Domaines Bournet-Lapostolle in Chile. The team is currently led by Charles de Bournet, the son of the founders and 7th generation.

Extremely aromatic with red currants, blackcurrants, spices, iodine, paprika and subtle hints of white pepper. Fresh flowers, fresh sage, lavender and some pine needles and sandalwood. Medium-bodied with perfectly integrated tannins that go on for minutes with refined and harmonious fruit that integrates beautifully into the wine, giving it a weightless structure that shows class and verve. Endless balance and length. It’s so balanced that you could drink it now but it will age for decades. A blend of 75% carmenere, 18% cabernet sauvignon and 7% merlot. Best after 2028.

The 2021 Clos Apalta comprises 75% Carménère, with the remainder filled out by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, sourced from the eponymous Apalta Vineyard. It was aged for 24 months in oak barrels, two-thirds of which were new. This dark purple wine reveals nuanced aromas of graphite, herbs, dried plums and blackberry marmalade, complemented by mint, boldo and garrigue-like notes over a green bell pepper layer. Plush and ample on the palate, it is lifted by a mild refreshing quality that adds a rare nimbleness to its flow. This long-lasting red is a serious wine, less influenced by Michel Rolland's style than in other years, as the fresh vintage imparted a lighter, less ripe and more expressive character. Clos Apalta is one of those rare Chilean wines that reliably showcases the characteristics of each vintage while maintaining a consistent house style. That steadiness is a boon for consumers, as it allows them to appreciate the impact of different vintages, which is a significant part of the allure of high-quality wines. Drink: 2028 - 2040.

Le Petit Clos, the second wine of Clos Apalta, was created with the vintage 2014 and originates from the same vineyard as its older sibling. As a result it benefits from the exact same care both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

A nice touch of baked cherries and dark chocolate to the deep blackberry fruit. Ink and a touch of graphite and dried herbs. Full-bodied and pretty powerful with fine-grained tannins and a long, extensive finish. 68% carmenere, 16% cabernet sauvignon,15% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. Give it two more years to let the fruit settle more. Drink or hold.

Embracing a Bordeaux-style approach, Le Petit Clos is the second wine of Clos Apalta. The 2021 Le Petit Clos combines 68% Carménère, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from the Apalta Vineyard in Colchagua. Displaying a purple hue in the glass, it exhibits a ripe character mellowed by the fresh nature of the vintage. It offers plum and blackberry aromas along with bay leaf, boldo and menthol hints over an ashy marmalade core. Indulgent, plush and rich on the palate, the soft and overwhelming mouthfeel lingers long with a precise, juicy and slightly refreshing personality. The 2021 vintage is indeed a standout for Clos Apalta. Drink: 2024 - 2038.
