  Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky? The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky.The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour. Whiskies of up to 60 years old contribute to its character.

  In 1993, a panel of international experts at the International Wine and Spirit Competition awarded Johnnie Walker Blue Label its most prestigious medal, the Gold Medal for the Best Blended Whisky. Indeed this is a venerable whisky and one that would have been much appreciated by Walkers clients. A toasty, sweet aroma is complemented by a peaty and spicy taste that develops into heady flavours of oak, dark-chocolate and rich fruitcake. Comprising 16 of the world's rarest whiskies, Blue Label is dominanted by Islay malt whisky, and balanced by several rich Speyside malts that have undergone exceptional periods of sherry oak maturation. Today Blue Label is packaged in the traditional blue-green flint glass bottle – a perfect recast of the original. Square sided, yet tapering at the base and with the now famous slanting label. All whisky lovers should sample Blue Label once in their life to experience the full spectrum of the blenders art. Supplies are always limited. Each bottle is individually numbered.

  Other reviews… Nose: Opens very slowly to reveal a mass of aromas: lanolin, smoke, hessian, dried fruit, polished wood floors, oak, liquorice, cake, silky red fruit, cream. Palate: Hold it in the mouth and there's allspice, sultana cake, crisp malt, bung cloth, turfy smoke which builds in intensity as the whisky opens. Finish: Long, smoky, but also fruit pastilles.   Two variants of Johnnie Walker 'Gold Label' now co-exist under the 'Reserve' and 'Centenary Blend'  labels, with the latter now discontinued, and a rarity on the market. Like other products in the Johnnie Walker range, a degree of confusion surrounds their exact contents.

  We can tell you that the Centenary blend is a limited release to commemorate the first 100 years of Johnnie Walker. It’s a blend of fifteen different whiskies including Clynelish and Cardhu, aged for a minimum of 18 years.  This particular packaging is probably the second generation version from this series.

  Tasting notes: Bright gold colour. Gentle, sensual aromatics at first yield pristinely clean, buttery grains, then dried grass and dried coconut notes seamlessly lead into more fruity scents. Delicate pear and ripe apple notes emerge, with a sublime smokiness that wafts throughout adding overall depth. A very sexy sniff that pretty much clocks the Scotch Whisky aroma wheel. The palate delivers a powerful, sweet, spicy, gently smoky malt burst with pear and dried apricot emerging on the back palate. Excellent length. Impeccable balance. Long, drying peppermint / honeycomb aftertaste. A fabulous blend packing as much character and power as many a Single malt. 40% Alc./Vol.

  Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky.

  The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material.   With Cardhu single malt at the heart of the blend, Johnnie Walker’s Master Blender, Jim Beveridge has used whiskies matured for at least ten years in first-fill American Oak casks to create this latest expression. He finished the Scotch in ex-rye whiskey casks, creating a complex new whisky with creamy vanilla notes transitioning to a spicier finish.

  Number two in Johnnie Walker's collectable "Blender's Batch" series comes with an American twist: Composed from five distilleries including grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas, this was aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels before a six month finishing in former American rye whiskey casks. Its inspiration stems from Jim Beveridge's time spent blending Bourbons and ryes in Kentucky in the 1990s. Normally a travel retail exclusive, we've sneaked a small volume into out latest shipment!

  Other reviews... Try this in your next Manhattan. Heather honey sweetness, Belgian waffles, cinnamon, rye spices, creamy vanilla, peppercorn, and dried porcini emerge after the 6-month rye cask finishing period. Sweet caramel oozes over the tongue, Highland toffee and Orkney fudge hold the spices in check. Banana candy and deep citrus acknowledge the Dufftown single malt component. The most accomplished Blender’s Batch to date. Emma Walker has nailed it.

  A big and quite rare format of the JW classic from earlier times, bottled at 43% (current material is 40%. The man is also walking in the opposite direction on the label compared to the new packaging). We've included the review from the late Michael Jackson, which might be more indicative of what's inside than recent reviews of the 12. One bottle only to sell. Note: minor markings and ware to the carton, otherwise excellent condition.

  Up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu.

  Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky?   If you've been a little underwhelmed by Johnny Blue of late, this might persuade you to revisit the brand: A super limited natural strength bottling of the world famous super blend. This has been a game changer for more than a few 'malt-only' devotees, however, it's only ever been scheduled for Travel Retail. Named "Blue Label 'The Casks Edition'", it's blended from a small selection of their finest casks that were hand picked by Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge. He comments, “Only one in ten thousand of our casks have sufficient character for Blue Label and in creating this special edition we really wanted to showcase the incredible flavours that come from the casks themselves”.

   

  Tasting note: Deep amber gold with considerable legs. Patience is key here as this gradually unfolds over 5-10 minutes, developing from a shy and slightly off-key opening , to toasty grains, smoked almonds, dusty cocoa and soft whispers of smouldering, earthy peat. The later stages offer up dried fig, poached pear and manuka honey plus added sweet spice. So poised and softly spoken you would never believe the ABV.This is light on its feet, yet densely packed and almost impossibly wound up with orchard fruits, honeyed cereals and smoke in such a seamless way that it's difficult to identify individual flavours. Concludes with a delicate earthy, peaty tang. Subtle but long. A little water broadens the profile and expands the fruity-cereal aspect. 55.8% Alc./Vol.

   

  Other reviews... You don't mess with the Johnnie Walker brand name casually, so we expect greatness, and boy, do we get it here. This has a dusty, smoky nose with dried apricot and grape, and the whisky is gossamer-soft on the palate, with sweet pear and honey evolving on top of an oaky rich heart before a tidal wave of pepper and peat, and a delightful spice smoke and oak conclusion. Magnificent. 94 points

Johnnie Walker 'King George Edition' celebrates the first Royal Warrant granted to John Walker and Sons Ltd to supply Scotch whisky to the British Royal Household in 1934, a recognition of the quality and appeal of its product. The blend is produced according to the same techniques used during the reign of King George V and features only whiskies from distilleries operating during that era, including single malt from such prestigious distilleries as Royal Lochnagar and Port Ellen (the latter of which no longer exists. Titled 'Fine Honeyed Notes', it focuses on the sweeter flavours within the range, with some of the 100 casks coming from four closed grain distilleries – Caledonian, Cambus, Carsebridge and Port Dundas - so quite rare material here. After contemplating impeccably selected aged liquids from the big five Distillers Company Limited (DCL) grain distilleries, he’s ready. Three vattings representing cask character, distillery character, and Highland single malt were combined in the final blend. Fresh layers of lemon and honey mingle with wood smoke. Titled 'Rare Fruit Character', it focuses on the fruity flavours found in the JW inventories, hand selected from 29 casks.

  Other reviews... This second release celebrates Walker’s rare fruit character using 29 handpicked casks combining regional styles, aligned to the 2010 Director’s Blend. Aromas of pear and fresh apple layered over tangy, sugar-tossed dried fruits, pineapple, deep orange oils, and dry peel. Taciturn smoke. Creamy butteriness with red apple, raspberry, and sweet orange yields to soft, chewy pear skins, honey-drizzled Turkish delights, and charred paper. An outlier of JW character but important to contemplate how this adds context to the entire collection. 46.8% Alc./Vol.

  Part of this edition is matured in former Sherry casks, taking inspiration from sherry matured malts. Very limited stocks.

  Tasting note: Deep amber gold. Quite frail by JW standards with low key smoke and subdued fruit cake, vanilla and tea biscuit aromas; doesn't really budge after ample air contact. Almost dilute, feather-weight whisky with mildly fruity, oily malt and sweet spice notes. Pulls up short. The Sherry isn't pronounced, but it's enough to subdue the smokiness typically associated with this label. 40% Alc./Vol.

  The Explorers' Club Collection which was released over 2012 and 2013 to honour the Johnnie Walker Whisky Traders has always been scheduled for Duty Free stores only. We've managed to secure tiny quantities from a secret source in order to satisfy Australian followers of the brand who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to obtain these limited editions. So far the Trade Routes series has included The Spice Road, The Gold Route and The Royal Route. However, there's a missing link that's arguably the most collectable of all.

   

  Jan van den Ende , writing for 'Best Shot Whisky Reviews' explains, "It is likely that The Adventurer was the first of a new series within The Explorer's Club Collection. However a law suite was launched by the existing real life Explorer's Club that included such legendary names as Buzz Aldrin and Sir Ernest Shackleton. The Club funds scientific Research and Education and did not want their name used for commercial purposes without their permission. A judge ruled in favour of the Club in August 2014 which forced Diageo to rethink their strategy with regards to the Explorer's Club Collection.   A wonderful antique Johnnie Walker collectable, replete with scratches and dents! The unusual presentation tin, both old and knocked around adds charm. The bottle itself has a tax strip around the seal and the rear has an Italian import label for 'United Distillers Italia SPA Genova', a company that ran from the late 1980s until mid 90s when Diageo was formed, therefore the bottling date is a best guess. 40% Alc./Vol. One only.

  'Odyssey’, takes its inspiration from the original notes of Sir Alexander Walker and is housed in a swinging decanter to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Sir Alexander’s creation of a whisky vessel capable of staying upright at sea. The whisky itself is a triple malt, blended and married in European oak casks, then housed in a rotating crystal-grade glass decanter.

  The product is initially launching in Asia Pacific before being rolled out globally, a move explained by James Thompson, chief marketing officer for Diageo Asia Pacific, who pointed to "an insatiable demand for super deluxe spirits globally and particularly in Asia Pacific".

  Asia-Pacific sales of Johnnie Walker now contribute about 12% of the global total and will climb to 20% by 2015. Thailand alone contributes 10% of global Johnnie Walker sales.

  “Globally, net sales for Scotch whisky are up 12 percent with most of that growth coming from super deluxe end of the market”, he confirmed, adding, “In Asia Pacific, Scotch whisky delivered more than 80% net sales growth, with almost half coming from super deluxe whiskies."

  Jim Beveridge, master blender at Johnnie Walker, described how he searched a number of distilleries in Scotland for the perfect three whiskies to blend for John Walker & Sons Odyssey. “They needed to have the right provenance and pedigree to create the aromas, tastes, flavours and sensations that Sir Alexander was looking for when he created the original blend almost 80 years ago.

  Developed as a 'luxury' whisky, Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge comments, "We sought out only the very finest, beautifully balanced blends that have deep evocative flavours and a character to match. On the nose, there is a vast array of rich fruity flavours including apple, pear, fig and peach. The packaging is superb. In this instance, the bottle design was illustrated by Good Wives and Warriors and represents Johnnie Walker's journey from the four corners of Scotland to the four corners of the world (Europe, Asia, North America and Africa).   This is the first in a new series that's exclusive to travel retail. We've managed to secure a small allocation from a secret source.

  "The Spice Road " was created by master blender, Jim Beveridge, to evoke the aromas of Asia. It's one of a series collectively known as "The Explorers Club Collection'" in reference to John Walker's pioneering travel around the world to establish markets for his whiskies back in the 1800s. The Spice Road is the first in a sub-series named the Trade Route Series - the whiskies are inspired by the cultural richness that can be found on three of the world's great trade routes.

  Spice Road will be followed by 'The Gold Route", with tropical flavours designed to reflect the aromas of the Caribbean and Latin America, due for release in March or April next year. Finally, Johnnie Walker ''The Royal Silk Route'', the most expensive of the line-up, will hit airport shelves in May or June.   Lovers of the Johnnie Walker have a new way to enjoy their favourite top shelf whisky as a special 500ml bottling. Johnnie Walker 'King George Edition' celebrates the first Royal Warrant granted to John Walker and Sons Ltd to supply Scotch whisky to the British Royal Household in 1934, a recognition of the quality and appeal of its product. The blend is produced according to the same techniques used during the reign of King George V and features only whiskies from distilleries operating during that era, including single malt from such prestigious distilleries as Royal Lochnagar and Port Ellen (the latter which no longer exists. Preserved stocks are extremely expensive due to their scarcity). Packaged in a handsome crystal decanter. A lavish gift for the whisky lover or collector. 43% Alc./Vol.
