This was the most limited in the 200th Anniversary series, and also the most expensive. Master Blender, Jim Beveridge and his small team of whisky makers have drawn inspiration from the flavours listed on an original inventory from John Walker’s store. Rare and exceptional whiskies, including ghost stocks from distilleries like Pittyvaich, Cambus and Port Ellen (all at least 28 years old), have been explored to craft a whisky that re-imagines the exotic flavours of the 1820s. The result is the pinnacle of the 2020 collection, packaged to impress in a heavy decanter style bottle and large presentation case. 46% Alc./Vol.

Notes from Johnnie Walker... A complex, rich whisky with layers of flavour in which an array of fruit aromas come together in harmony, balanced with warming spices and a soft, rolling smoke redolent of the rich array of exotic goods on offer. Dried fruit such as sultanas and figs are sweetened by hints of candied ginger, before berries, brown sugar and aromatic spices fill up the senses. PALATE: The first sip opens the doors to reveal delicious layers of spice mingling with sweet honey and rich molasses inspired by the rows of tempting jars. Waves of sultanas, cocoa beans and herbal notes are carried on wisps of soft smoke leading you further down the aisles of John’s store with every sip. FINISH: A sweet spice lingers as the door closes behind you.

The fifth and final edition in the John Walker & Sons Private Collection series is also one of the most sought after. Released in late 2018, an exceptional blend of single malt and grain whiskies aged for at least 28 years have been handpicked from distilleries including Cambus in the Lowlands, Strathmill in Speyside, Caol Ila on Islay and Clynelish in the Highlands. 250 samples later, three vattings were created before marrying them together to create the final cut. 3,888 bottles were produced. We have one only from a private collection. 42.8% Alc./Vol.

Given the contents in the bottle, this is undoubtedly one of the more collectible whisky releases EVER from Johnnie Walker. It marks the fourth edition in the Ghost and Rare series, "crafted using irreplaceable malts from ‘ghost’ distilleries that have long since closed, together with other rare malt and grain scotch.” Pittyvaich was operational for just 18 years before falling victim to industry consolidation in 1993.

Other reviews... This fourth installment of Ghost and Rare targets Speyside, delivering a contemplative nose of roasted nuts, toffee, cinnamon, crisp green apple, candied citrus, late summer honey, and seasoned oak. The palate is satin smooth, with a slightly oily mouthfeel and flavors of golden syrup, oak, orange peel, lime zest, butterscotch, vanilla, dry spice, and smoked orange wheel. A polished and rich Johnnie Walker, elevated by subtle shifts in mood.

Johnnie Walker's selection of long closed "ghost" distilleries continue to feature in a series of limited edition Blue Label bottlings. The fifth in the line up includes dwindling reserves from Port Dundas, which shipped its distinct Scotch from Glasgow canals to the world for nearly 200 years. Cambus and Brora are also in the mix, as well as rare whiskies like Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie. The latter add spiced apple notes alongside the aromas of peaches and dark berries from Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk.

Built in Glasgow in 1811 at the highest point in the city’s rich commercial history, the historic Port Dundas distillery closed in 2010 after Diageo moved the majority of its grain whisky production to Cameronbridge. It traditionally contributed to blends, including Bell's, Black & White, Haig, J&B, Johnnie Walker, Vat 69 and White Horse. Slowly but surely prices are increasing as awareness of its limited nature and generally good to excellent quality gains ground.

Closing in 1981, Port Ellen has held its "Ghost" status for over 30 years, now. Yet Diageo don't seem to be running all that dry of it... Johnnie Walker believe they have done the extinct distilleries product justice with this Blue Label blend. The reviews seem to be backing up that idea too. 8 different single malts from every corner of Scotland have been used, including two more Ghost distilleries. First and foremost, Port Ellen, then grain whisky from Carsebridge and Caledonian and then malts from Dailuaine, Cragganmrore, Mortlach, Blair Athol and Oban. If you don't want to spend 4 figures to experience this near forgotten dram, then here is your chance.

Other reviews.... This uninhibited, tempestuous expression of Blue Label highlights the artistry of the blender through the judicious use of closed distillery malts and grains. Coastal notes of sea spray, lemon, dirty peat smoke, cookies and cream, After Eight mints, caramel, and dry-roasted spice aromas. Combining lemon bonbon, waxy orange, cookie dough, fondant icing, and chocolate, with tobacco smoke, hints of peppermint, and grapefruit notes, this flagrantly outclasses the Brora variant.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml) - First Edition
    SCOTLAND
    $1499. 00

    $17988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such may have some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.

Given the contents in the bottle, this is undoubtedly one of the more collectible whisky releases EVER from Johnnie Walker.

Brora, a long gone distillery whose few remaining casks occassionally appear in Diageo’s annual Special Release series has become a highly coveted (and expensive) whisky. This release marks the first edition in the Ghost and Rare series, "crafted using irreplaceable malts from ‘ghost’ distilleries that have long since closed, together with other rare malt and grain scotch.”

Created by Master Blender Dr. Jim Beveridge, this composition includes malt and grain whiskies from eight distilleries, three of which are closed. In addition to the aforementioned Brora, the other two closed distilleries included are Pittyvaich and Cambus, the remainder being the still active Clynelish, Royal Lochnagar, Glenkinchie, Glenlossie and Cameronbridge distillieries. Bottled at 46% ABV, it comes with strong praise from several sources, which makes sense given its provenence. Very collectable.

Other reviews... This is much more muscular than the regular, un-haunted Blue Label. It delivers a multitude of flavors—butter toffee, sweet smoke, citrus peel, and dry spices—tantalizingly peeling off layer after layer, building a slow crescendo to a peak of spices and bitter citrus. Mouth drawing with caramel, apple, pear, and sherbet, a mid-palate of zesty orange and baking spices before topping out with bitter peels, grapefruit, smoke, and sour hard candy.

Unlike the Jane Walker package for Johnnie Walker Black Label released in 2018, this is a new whisky altogether, a blend of various malts aged at least 10 years, including Cardhu and Clynelish. The nose is floral and gently nutty, with rose water, salted almonds, green apple, nougat, and caramel chews. Light-bodied and silky in the mouth, it has bright flavors of lime, lemon, vanilla, and coconut, before edging into nutty milk chocolate and finishing with good length, and a final savory note. The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

A genuine rarity in Australia, this special bottling for the Taiwanese market was also offered at a higher than normal proof for Johnnie Blue (46% as opposed to 40%). Like others in the Zodiac series, a particular animal features in the design. The 2018 bottle artwork was created in collaboration with multi-award winning Taiwanese artist, Page Tsou. The presentation proudly displayed a Shar Pei dog. Originally bred for Chinese nobility, the rare breed is renowned for its excessively wrinkled skin. The bottle is marked with the year of release. 46% Alc./Vol.

Swing virtually disappeared for several decades to be recently re-launched as a super-premium blend. Its distribution remains largely confined to duty-free markets. 43% Alc./Vol.

There are many bottlings of Johnnie Walker, however few Australian whisky enthusiasts will be familiar with Johnnie Walker Gold Label. '...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Reflecting on the brand's own 200-year journey, the Johnnie Walker marketing team are now gazing ahead to the next two centuries by launching a collection that reimagines how some of the world's leading cities will look in the future. This glimpse into the year 2220 brings us into a space where well known cityscapes and landmarks appear alongside incredible feats of geo-engineering, A.I empowerment and physics defying architecture. Featured cities include London, Hainan, Taipei, Mexico City, Seoul, Bangkok, Berlin, Singapore, Mars and, of course, our very own Sydney. Each design was created in collaboration with London-based digital artist and creative powerhouse, Luke Halls.

His illustration of 23rd century Sydney embodies the theme of geo-engineered cities, envisioning an explosion of tropical and exotic plant cultivation that has created stunning floating garden islands in the harbour – gigantic exotic plants and trees provide both an unmissable tourist attraction and act as the lungs of the city, keeping its air clean and pure. Its skyline of familiar and new architecture is a green oasis with living walls and rooftop gardens. A truly clean city, all of Sydney’s power comes from a combination of hydro and solar energy capture. As ever, the harbour and surrounding waters are filled with water taxis and hyper light sailing boats which dart through the waves. In order to augment the experience, you can be further transported into the world of 2220 by scanning the front of the bottle with your smartphone. 40% Alc./Vol.

Named for House Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Aromas of malt, peppercorn, dry chile flakes, spicy nachos, sliced red apples, roasted whole spices, and soft smoke from snuffed candles. On the palate, this has a light, floaty texture with flavors of red apple at its core, followed by a roar of spice, citrus peel, lemon, sharp fruity acidity, vanilla pod, and a touch of walnut. The finish is lengthy and spicy.

This pale gold, limited-edition dram is named in honor of House Stark from the Song of Ice and Fire book series, better known by its television name, Game of Thrones. Designed for Highballs or pouring over ice, it offers a nose of vanilla sponge cake sweetness, dried grasses, green melon, spring blossoms, white pepper, and a faint trace of peppermint. It has a soft, caressing character, with melon, pulpy summer fruits, sour lemon, butterscotch, barley sugar, vanilla caramel, and a later supportive fizzle of spice. It concludes with a finish of sweet vanilla and fruits.

"A triumph of Blending" 97 points. - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2014.

If you've been a little underwhelmed by Johnny Blue of late, this might persuade you to revisit the brand: A super limited natural strength bottling of the world famous super blend. This has been a game changer for more than a few 'malt-only' devotees, however, it's only ever been scheduled for Travel Retail. Named "Blue Label 'The Casks Edition'", it's blended from a small selection of their finest casks that were hand picked by Walker's Master Blender, Jim Beveridge. He comments, “Only one in ten thousand of our casks have sufficient character for Blue Label and in creating this special edition we really wanted to showcase the incredible flavours that come from the casks themselves”.

Tasting note: Deep amber gold with considerable legs. Patience is key here as this gradually unfolds over 5-10 minutes, developing from a shy and slightly off-key opening , to toasty grains, smoked almonds, dusty cocoa and soft whispers of smouldering, earthy peat. The later stages offer up dried fig, poached pear and manuka honey plus added sweet spice. So poised and softly spoken you would never believe the ABV.This is light on its feet, yet densely packed and almost impossibly wound up with orchard fruits, honeyed cereals and smoke in such a seamless way that it's difficult to identify individual flavours. Concludes with a delicate earthy, peaty tang. Subtle but long. A little water broadens the profile and expands the fruity-cereal aspect. 55.8% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... You don't mess with the Johnnie Walker brand name casually, so we expect greatness, and boy, do we get it here. This has a dusty, smoky nose with dried apricot and grape, and the whisky is gossamer-soft on the palate, with sweet pear and honey evolving on top of an oaky rich heart before a tidal wave of pepper and peat, and a delightful spice smoke and oak conclusion. A perfect addition to your Game of Thrones collection and described by whiskyadvocate.com as "A deliciously tasty dram for your night’s watch", this light, fruity blend comes chill-filtered for a smooth flavour you can sip straight from the freezer (reportedly, the bottle also includes a special design element: ink that glows if a bottle’s frozen!) At its heart are malts from Cardhu and Clynelish – "the latter one of Scotland's most northern distilleries where whiskies have endured long Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the climate north of the wall". An obvious must-have for JW collectors. Get it while the opening price holds

Black Label was first introduced in 1910 although its origins go back as far as 1820 when Walker blended his original 'Kilmarnock Whisky' and began selling it from his grocery shop. The location of the shop had a great deal to do with Black Labels success. Situated on a main trading route near an old poll gate, the shop attracted passing merchants and locals. It was through these travellers that the whiskys fame quickly spread.

This aged version of the classic Red Label enjoys a similar cult following. Its unique complexity is achieved by expertly blending an extremely diverse, but complementary range of malt whiskies, each of which has been matured for a minimum of 12 years and some for much longer. In total, up to 40 malts and grain whiskies make up the Johnnie Walker Black Label blend. Island and Islay malts deliver spice, richness and lingering peat. Speyside malts make an important contribution to the depth of taste, bringing smoky malt, fruitiness, apple freshness and a rich sherry character to the blend. At the heart of Black Label lies 12 year old Cardhu, an outstanding malt from Speyside, which imparts silkiness, a characteristic which has made it famous as a single malt.

To date, Black Label has won more international awards for excellence than any other deluxe whisky. In the 1880s, Old Highland won medals in Sydney and Paris. Over 100 years later, in 1994, Black Label picked up gold medals at the 1994 Monde Selection Awards and the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), where it also won a trophy for Best Blended Whisky. In 1996, it won gold again at IWSC for the best deluxe Scotch Whisky.

Black Label has many admirers, but perhaps none so famous or devoted as Sir Winston Churchill, whose still life painting 'Bottlescape' (1932) proudly captures the familiar contours of his whisky of choice. Indeed, the company's old timers recall the Herculean efforts required to keep the British PM supplied with his favourite tipple during wartime rationing!

Other reviews… Nose: Rich. Maple syrup, spices and mustard. Can a whisky have a hint of acidity on the nose? Yes, but rahter the acidity of a Lenny Bruce rather than of vinegar. Palate: Marijuana. Big interplay of smoky dryness, spicy heat and sweetly malty, creamy vanilla. Finish: Rounded with raisiny sherry. At length, mellow. Comment: Is Black Label a great whisky? Was Dizzy Gillespie a great musician? Rating: 90 -Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com

Learning more about your Scotch whiskies ...

Over the last few decades, a growing number of distilleries have begun marketing a portion of the whisky they distil for consumption as single malt whisky. But by far the greater part of their production remains reserved for the world famous blended scotch whiskies. By definition, a blended whisky contains both single malt and grain whisky in varying proportions and ages. For example, a typical blend might contain between 15 and 40 different single malt whiskies as well as grain whiskies. Even the cheapest blended whiskies usually contain at least 5% of Single Malt although more commonly malt content will range from anywhere between 10% - 40%.
