    BARBADOS
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48.2%
This molasses based rum produced from a pot and twin column stills at the West Indies Rum Distillery was initially matured in Bourbon barrels in the tropics followed by twelve months aging in Partizan brewing casks.

Part of Plantation's Single Cask series, like the rest of the range, these limited editions are matured in a two-stage process, beginning in the tropics and then at the Château de Bonbonnet in France. The point of difference is that the Single Casks are finished in complementary beer, wine or spirits casks, individually raised by Alexandre Gabriel (named World's Best Master Blender in 2012). Aimed at drinkers and collectors alike, only a few barrels are bottled annually with each bottle numbered.

Notes from Plantation... Nose : Fruity notes of cooked apple, raspberry, plum and peach dominate, then followed by acacia blossom honey, walnut and earthy and spicy notes of ginger. Palate : Very zingy and citrusy with a touch of pink pepper, followed by harmonious notes of lemongrass, coriander, spruce. 48.2% Alc./Vol.

1996 Plantation Jamaica Rum 22 Year Old Extreme No.3 ITP Cask Strength Rum (700ml)
    JAMAICA
    $365. 00
    Bottle
    $4380.00 Dozen
    ABV: 54.8%
The third release in Plantation's 'Extreme' range is actually two rums: Both come from the Long Pond Distillery in Jamaica. Both were distilled in 1996 and spent 21 years maturing in x bourbon barrels before Ferrand’s traditional finishing in cognac casks in France. Labelled ITP and HJC respectively, they're the result of two slightly different 'recipes'.

In Jamaica, distilleries classify rum based on the content of 'esters' post distillation (the aromatic chemical compounds created during fermentation. These determine how heavy the rum is). For Long Pond, their ITP is the slightly lighter of the two marques - having said that, both are described as "full-bodied and funky", with the ITP being the fruitier of the two, fermented for three weeks with an ester count of 386 g/hl AA.

In July 2018 there was a large fire at Long Pond Distillery and over 65,000 litres of rum were destroyed. The historic distillery is still standing, but it may be some time before we see more like these. Just over 2000 bottles of each were made for the worldwide market. We have a tiny allocation so collectors will be scrambling for the pair.

Plantation's Extreme series is a collection of limited-edition rums that are "simply perfect in their natural state". The Master Blender adds, "Sometimes we find a rum barrel in our cellar that stands alone for its uniqueness of taste which can only be described as “extreme”. This cask is then set aside and bottled for its sheer exquisite essence, resulting in a very limited edition of what we call Plantation Extreme."

Tasting note: Brassy gold. Packed and expressive with scents of cornflake honey crackles, golden syrup and thick vanilla amid the vapoury spirit. Second pass dries the bouquet offering hints of banana fritter, marmalade and damar varnish. Rich and creamy entry; more biitersweet as the alcoholic attack strikes mid palate. Super intense cocoa, vanilla, then bitter toffee and banana cake enter as the tongue nipping spices retreat. Surprisingly controlled for all the spirit here. Long and delicious. Plantation O.F.T.D. Overproof Rum (1000ml)
    Caribbean,
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 69%

A blend of rums from Barbados, Guyana and Jamaica in the overproof dark style, replacing Plantation’s 'Original Dark Overproof' which was a Trinidad exclusive. "O.F.T.D." stands for "Old Fashioned Traditional Dark". In its conception, Alexandre Gabriel, Master Blender for Plantation Rum, brought together six rum luminaries - Jeff "Beachbum" Berry from Latitude 29, Martin Cate from Smuggler's Cove, Paul McFadyen from Trailer Happiness, Paul McGee from Lost Lake, Scotty Schuder from Dirty Dick, and Dave Wondrich, cocktail historian extraordinaire. After many tasting and blending sessions they formulated a rum ideally suited for use in top-shelf Tiki and tropical cocktails.

Distinguished by its deep topaz colour and super aromatics, this powerhouse is clearly made for boozy tropical libations and bar circuits. Banana fritter, dried mango, dates and molasses are up front with air contact adding pipe tobacco, balsa wood and dark chocolate. The intensely caney / grassy entry cranks up with flavours of raw sugar, liquorice strap, fruit mince pie and all-spice, capping off a surprisingly well balanced overproof expression with profound depth and staying power. Mix with abandon, but OFTD stands up as a drink in its own right. 69% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Some of the world’s best rums are being made by a man who cut his teeth on Cognac, Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand. Not long after reviving that brandy house, Gabriel turned his attention to rum, creating Plantation and endowing it with a Cognac distiller’s sense of balance, elegance and variety. OFTD (Old-Fashioned Traditional Dark), created with input from rum specialists including cocktail historian David Wondrich and tiki expert Martin Cate, is a blockbuster. Earlier Plantation dark rums had relied exclusively on Trinidadian stocks, but OFTD instead blends Jamaican rum’s oily funk with Guyana’s focused intensity and Barbados’s lithe grace—all in a powerhouse package at 138 proof. This is a mixing rum that will stand up to even the stoutest of punches. - wineandspiritsmagazine.com

Summing up, the Plantation Old Fashioned Traditional Dark is a deserved yet unusual — perhaps even controversial — entry to the Key Rums series. It is a multi-country blend, not something that showcases a certain country.  Yes, it was deliberately created to do only one thing, and therefore its value as an all-round consumer drink is somewhat circumscribed; yes it’s really strong, and sure…in that segment it stays and plays.  Yet as I have suggested here, it has qualities over and above all that.  It supercedes the modest aims of its creators, to the point where it actually can stand by itself. It remains, nearly a decade after its introduction, one of the most reviewed, commented on and widespread rums around and if its shine is less now than it was when first introduced and now that it has stiffer competition, there is no reason to doubt either its many uses or availability.  It remains, for all its parent company’s woes, an incredibly popular and in-use bar staple and drinking adjunct to this day. It demonstrates, if nothing else, how well the Caribbean distillates work with each other in a way that is not often seen. And that’s no mean accomplishment for any rum – especially one made by this outfit – to claim. One can only ask why more of the company’s rums don’t adhere to its philosophy. - thelonecaner.com

This cask is then set aside and bottled for its sheer exquisite essence, resulting in a very limited edition of what we call Plantation Extreme."

Distilled in March 1999 and bottled in September 2017 with a total outturn of 1000 bottles, this rum was created at Guyana's now-dismantled Uitvlugt distillery in March 1999 and then aged in bourbon casks for 15 years, before three further years of maturation in Cognac casks.

While Uitvlugt continues to operate as a sugar refinery and producer of molasses, the equipment used for rum production reportedly ceased operation in 2000. Not surprisingly, the rums have become quite collectible. 59.7% Alc./Vol. Very limited allocation.

"Smooth but with a kick, this is a premium white rum with lots of cocktail versatility." - drinkhacker.com

A combination of rums from Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica - hence the name '3 stars'. Some of the rums are unaged, others aged 3 and 12 years, blended and filtered back to clear before being bottled by the French Cognac house, Pierre Ferrand. Light to moderate aromatics yield notes of unripe banana, green olive and peppercorn, becoming more subdued and waxy with aeration. Starts off light and easy in the mouth but crescendos enough by mid palate to gain a point in concentration. Almost a fine grappa-like profile with subtle fruity / unripe banana flavours leading into a mildly creamy, waxy, grassy finish. Concludes pleasantly spicy, crisp and precise. Not the driest on the market but one of the best. 41.2% Alc./Vol.

Alexandre Gabriel, proprietor of Cognac Ferrand, comments, “…Our desire was to develop a rum that shows character, elegance, complexity and a great finish – the ideal rum for cocktails … beginning with a 3-year aged Trinidad rum, carbon filtered to maintain its white colour and to remove the heavier tannins while preserving the aromatics developed and refined by aging. Un-aged rums from Barbados and Jamaica are blended, along with a 12 year old rum from Jamaica. The Jamaican rum is an expensive ingredient but key to the taste of the overall blend. Trinidad brings elegance and refinement, Barbados brings character and aromatics with fruit notes without being too heavy and Jamaican brings the funk, the touch that makes it a complete product.”

Other reviews... Look for sweet, candied citrus-peel aromas and flavors, enlivened with white pepper and fresh ginger. 94 points - wineenthusiast.com

...This rum is extremely sugar-forward, a monstrously sweet rum that leaves delicacy behind. Big tropical notes — mango and especially banana — hit you after the raw sugar cane fades, and that old Jamaican rum, pot-distilled for sure, brings a touch of hoary funk to the finish. Some citrus notes laced throughout. Smooth but with a kick, this is a premium white rum with lots of cocktail versatility. - drinkhacker.com

Pronounced 'zay-muck-uh', this unusual Plantation revives the 19th century Jamaican-style of 100% pot still rums in an expression that reveals some traditional "Rum Funk". These are sometimes described as aromas and flavours of black banana and flambéed pineapple, locally called "Hogo," an Anglicization of the French term "Haut Goût" (high taste). The rum stems from Plantation's latest investment in the Caribbean's 'Long Pond' and 'Clarendon' distilleries. Maison Ferrand now owns a third of each after purchasing the West Indies Rum Distillery in 2017. These acquisitions have made Alexandre Gabriel's dream of blending a 100% pot still Jamaican rum a reality. He adds, "With Xaymaca Special Dry, I wanted to dive into the iconic culture that is unique to Jamaican rum. I wanted to work with these complex flavors of overripe exotic fruits with an almost "animal intensity". We can still find certain white rums with this famous "rum funk". I think, however, that this great terroir expresses itself perfectly in an aged rum. That is why we are launching Xaymaca Special Dry, which is a tribute to this ancestral culture of rum".

Other reviews... Lively and complex, this carries aromas of honey, cedar, Mandarin orange, cooked pineapple and brown sugar. The plush, slightly viscous palate echoes those flavors, layering on bright flickers of cedar and lemon peel, plus a hint of funk reminiscent of agricole rhum. It finishes with a warming clove tingle on the tip of the tongue. Made with 100% pot still Jamaican rum, aged first in Jamaica and then in ex-Cognac casks at the Ferrand estate. 97 points - wineenthusiast.com

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
The 2003 Edition was matured for 8 years in x Bourbon casks followed by another 4 years in x Cognac casks.

Tasting note: Brassy gold. Superb aromas of raisin slice, muscat-wine, dates, orange spice cake and raw sugar. A silky, light to medium bodied rum with semi-sweet and elegant flavours of nougat, caramelised pineapple, plantain and golden syrup. Rounds out with Cognac-like finesse. Classy. 42% Alc./Vol.

[2000 Vintage Tasted]  Trinidad produces rum via column stills which result in a lighter, more elegant spirit. Aged for ten years, this rum exhibits a deep straw with a pale straw hue. The nose initially offers subtle notes of clove and anise over a delicious buttered shortbread base with some cocoa, menthol and spice notes emerging. Medium to full bodied, the palate unfolds rich creme caramel counterpointed by slightly drier flavours of shortbread, then spearmint. Spicy, tingly and slightly oily mouthfeel. Excellent length. Finishes long with a honeycomb and cocoa aftertaste and subtle spearmint fade. For lovers of Scotch finger biscuits! 42% Alc./Vol.

The Caribbean is undeniably the epicenter of world Rum production, a fact celebrated by seven artisanal vintage rums and three blends marketed under the ‘Plantation’ label, a new venture from highly commended ‘Cognac Ferrand’, makers of 'Pierre Ferrand Cognac', 'Citadelle Gin' and several other high quality spirits.

The Pierre Ferrand company has had relationships with a number of the Caribbean’s top rum producers for many years via the supply of x-Cognac casks. These are prized by certain distillers for the maturation of their best rums and generally reserved to ‘give style’ to blended rums. Presented with the opportunity to taste the fruits of his trade, Ferrand’s owner/director, Alexandre Gabriel, visited the Caribbean and was blown away. The experience ignited a love affair with Rum and he immediately commenced negotiations to secure his own stocks, launching the Plantation range around 2005.

The driving concept behind this collection is essentially one of ‘terroir’ - each aims to express ‘the characteristics and flavour of its place of origin’. One might argue that if there are definite regional differences that contribute to rum styles in the Caribbean, these are largely obscured by the fact that, unlike many other spirits, regulations for the production of rum are minimal. Instead, all sorts of creative departures are permitted making Ferrand’s claim a difficult marketing line to maintain. We recently tasted the Plantation collection for ourselves. While there is indeed a remarkable diversity to be found, there’s also a common house style. Most of the Plantation Rums possess in varying degrees, a remarkable mid palate opulence and buttery texture, balanced by a tannic dryness - a combination that results in flavour profiles one would usually associate with fine wines or brandies. Ignoring the marketing speels, one cannot ignore the fact that these rums demonstrate that carefully selected estate or single-island rums can offer a range of aromas and flavours that compete with the depth and complexity of great Cognac or Whisky.

No doubt one of the key influences is Ferrand’s unique finishing process. When their maturation period in the Caribbean is deemed complete, the rums are transported at natural strength to Chateau du Bonbonnet, the historic Ferrand estate in France and then ‘finished’ for several more months in small French x-Ferrand Cognac barrels. This process was used extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries. Gabriel explains, 'Ninety-nine percent of rums are aged in barrels that once held bourbon. We found that adding an aging process in a French oak cask that once held Cognac adds extra complexity to the rum. This is a practice that was done more commonly in the past but has almost disappeared now. We thought who better than Ferrand, with our knowhow and exceptional casks, to resurrect this ancient technique. It is a very difficult thing to get right, but when done well, it's paradise.' He adds, 'In the Caribbean, Plantation Rums are rare treasures. At Ferrand they become jewels.'

This much anticipated Rum collection has finally arrived in Australia, yours to explore island by island and country by country. Where specified, vintages denote the year of distillation. Stocks are limited. Given the very reasonable price/quality ratio, several vintages are sure to sell out fast. Be quick!

Tasting note: [2001 vintage tasted] Deep burnished brass / copper colour. Perfumed aromatics include mild scents of pine wood, polished leather and a distinct dried banana note. Powerful, off dry palate flavours continue with dried banana and molasses re emerging amongst mildly herbaceous notes - cut grass? Very gentle spirit warmth. Quite like a young Cognac in structure. Exceptionally long aftertaste of dried banana, liquorice strap, molasses and spice. 94 points. 45% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Jamaica is well known for its rich, aromatic rums, most of which are produced in pot stills and used extensively for blending. This 8 year old, 100% pot distilled rum exudes both power and sophistication. Gold in colour with a pale straw hue it boasts one of the most powerful noses of the Plantation collection, offering a penetrating amalgam of fried banana, brown sugar, heavy cream, sweet spice and new leather. The concentrated palate flavours mirror the nose with an off dry power wave of dried banana, manuka honey and pine wood accompanied by clean, drying tannin imparting a sense of freshness. Good length. Persistent, warming, delicate aftertaste of dried fruit and pine wood. A stunning rum. 42% Alc./Vol.

Matured nine years in ex-Bourbon casks, with an additional two years in barrels previously containing Cognac from Pierre Ferrand.

Tasting note: (2002 vintage tasted) A 100% column distilled rum matured for 9 years, initially in x-Bourbon casks. Straw gold with a pale straw hue. Almost perfumed aromas of confectionary, very ripe banana, pineapple, vanilla, clove and spearmint. The palate is plush with rich, sweet flavours - over-ripe banana, orange cake and spice notes are counterpointed by a hint of cigar box and cedar. Outstanding length. Soft, creamy mouthfeel and notable here and in several of the Plantation rums is a cedary oak aftertaste which balances the palate beautifully, and provides a sense of elegance. A lingering dried banana fade clinches this bottling as a rum lover's banana smoothy. Superb. 42% Alc./Vol. 95 Points

    Cognac meets the Caribbean.

Be quick!

Tasting note: A 100% column distilled rum matured for 9 years, initially in x-Bourbon casks.

Tasting note: Deep burnished brass / copper colour. 45% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Bright mahogany in colour. Restrained nose nevertheless entices with vanilla slice, creme caramel, dried coconut and choc-fudge notes - the prelude to a dessert lover’s dream. The theme continues on the palate. Extraordinarily rich and luxuriously textured, flavours of praline, creme caramel, barley sugar and coconut melt in the mouth. Silky mouth feel. Long aftertaste of confectionary and dried coconut. For all its sweetness - and this is very sweet and coconutty - this rum manages to maintain sufficient freshness. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Rich copper color. Bold aromas of coconut creme pie and creme brulee follow through on a rich entry to a fruity medium-full body with layers of dried tropical fruits and sweet baking spices. Finishes with a spicy praline, cherry, and toasted coconut fade with spicy cedar and leather underneath. A mildly sweet, very flavorful and appealing aged rum for sipping or fruity cocktails, especially piña coladas.   94 points - tastings.com

These incredible spirits are yours to explore island by island and country by country. Where specified, vintages denote the year of distillation.   Distilled in 1999 and matured for 11 years in ex-Bourbon casks. Finished in Pierre Ferrand Cognac casks for 18 months before bottling in 2014.

Tasting note: [2000 Vintage Tasted] Trinidad produces rum via column stills which result in a lighter, more elegant spirit. Aged for ten years, this rum exhibits a deep straw with a pale straw hue. The nose initially offers subtle notes of clove and anise over a delicious buttered shortbread base with some cocoa, menthol and spice notes emerging. Medium to full bodied, the palate unfolds rich creme-caramel counterpointed by slightly drier flavours of shortbread, then spearmint. Spicy, tingly and slightly oily mouthfeel. Excellent length. Finishes long with a honeycomb and cocoa aftertaste and subtle spearmint fade. For lovers of Scotch finger biscuits! 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note:  [1998 vintage] Grenada is considered one of the most fertile of the Caribbean islands, where plantations of sugar cane adjoin fruit and spice growers, the latter of which have earnt its world famous reputation as the 'Island of Spice'. This rum was aged for eight years in casks of unspecified origin. Bright, deep gold colour with a pale gold hue. A slightly dusty top note gradually dissipates to reveal subdued aromas of clove, cantaloupe and citrus oils that build with time in the glass. A luscious, rich, round entry fills the mouth, delivering honey, creme caramel and fried banana flavours with a touch of spice. Exceptionally pure, soft, silky mouth feel and perfectly poised, this rum is almost Sauternes like in profile, finishing sweet with a long, creamy, dried banana, creme caramel aftertaste. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2000 vintage tasted] Barbados typically produces light, sweetish rums from both pot and column stills. This blend of both styles was initially matured in Bourbon and Sherry casks. A stunning spirit, the 9 year old Barbados expression represents a benchmark for dark Caribbean Rum. Pale gold with a pale straw hue. Moderately aromatic, the nose releases luxurious scents of coconut cream, nougat, creme caramel, pistachio nuts and cocoa. The aroma profile is reflected on the palate with a soft, silky entry and mouth filling flavours of creme caramel, prunes, roasted banana and peanut satay sauce. Turns dry, with toasty vanillan oak and a distinct mint note following the initial flavour wave, combining a wonderful juxtaposition of sweet and dry with outstanding palate length, finishing long, with a delicate spearmint chocolate aftertaste.Sheer Caribbean class. 95 Points. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [2000 vintage tasted] Jamaica is well known for its rich, aromatic rums, most of which are produced in pot stills and used extensively for blending. 95 Points 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [1998 vintage tasted] Nicaragua is a noteworthy but frequently overlooked Central American producer where a variety of primarily medium-bodied rums from column stills are made, lending themselves well to aging. Barrel aged for 6 years, this rum exhibits a gold colour with a pale gold hue. The nose is introverted. Aromas of brown sugar, liquorice all sorts and dried banana are slowly teased out but remain shy even with time in the glass. The palate is the opposite. Plump, luscious and very approachable, it yields spicy, mouth filling flavours of vanilla sundae, prune and creme brulee with excellent length, before finishing dry with a long, subtle honey, biscuit aftertaste and creamy, honeycomb fade. 42% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Nicaragua is a noteworthy but frequently overlooked Central American producer where a variety of primarily medium-bodied rums from column stills are made, lending themselves well to aging.

    Cognac meets the Caribbean.

We thought who better than Ferrand, with our know how and exceptional casks, to resurrect this ancient technique.

Tasting note: [2003 vintage tasted] Deep amber gold. Fresh and estery with attractive aromas of dried banana, liquorice bullets and coffee flavoured milk. Rich and well-rounded in the mouth, featuring dates, vanilla, creme brulee and soft spices, drying at the finish and fading with hints of cigar box. A little short. 42% Alc./Vol.

Porfidio Triple Distilled White Rum (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $75. 00
    Bottle
    $900.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

At first thought, super premium Rum coming from the state of Jalisco, Mexico seems a strange concept. Jalisco is home to the town of Tequila, and is blessed with fertile volcanic soils suitable for the cultivation of Blue Agave - the succulent plant that forms the base of Tequila. One must the wonder, why Rum?

Three elements form the foundation of Rum. Sugar, Distallation, Oak maturation. The better the quality of these elements, the better the outcome: There's no shortage of distilling knowledge in Jalisco, given the strong Tequila Industry that thrives there. There's reliable, good quality sources of American oak, which is also used for maturing Tequila. The real surprise is that sugar is Mexico's largest industry, employing approximately 2.5 million people across the nation. It turns out, that Sugarcane, like Blue Agave, thrives in these fertile volcanic soils.

Porfidio Rum is produced from hand-harvested, individually selected sugarcane. The fields are located about an hour's drive from the distillery, which ensures that fresh cane arrives in peak condition. These fields are never burnt prior to harvest. The Rum is triple distilled, then aged for around three months in older American oak barrels then filtered to remove colour. The results simply speak for themselves.

Tasting Note: An intense sniff! An extraordinarily complex nose that takes quite some time to unfold and to fully appreciate. The initial aroma reveals a strong white pepper character followed by notes of lemon meringue, sweet biscuit and lemon rind. Yet, you get the feeling that's not the entire story. Upon further nasal investigation, notes of salty green olive emerge. The palate is best described as explosive, with a full bodied, initially prickly entry, quite unlike anything we've ever experienced in White Rum before. Sweet green capsicum flavours are supported by a white pepper backbone and a slightly oily mouthfeel. Exceptionally long aftertaste of lolly spearmint leaves and spice. Given the beguiling complexity and changing character of this Rum it's one of the more difficult spirits to describe. Those of you who believe Wray and Nephew is the be all and end all of White rum, guess again. 45.0% Alc./Vol.

The Caribbean island of Anguilla is commonly known as a popular vacation spot among tourists, but also houses one of the finest rums in the world.

Pyrat (pronounced 'Pirate') is a new spirit from the Patron company, creators of super premium tequila. One may be interested to know that the 'Anguilla Rums Facility' that produces Pyrat is a blending house and not a distillery, a common misconception due to the absence of sugar cane grown on Anguilla. As a result, the rum is made by blending aged rums from distilleries around the Caribbean.

    The Pinnacle of Caribbean Delight

Cask 1623 commemorates the date in which rums first began distilling in the Caribbean. It comprises of nine blended Caribbean pot-still rums aged up to 40 years old. Expect Cognac-like weight with signature richness, orange and vanilla flavours.
Packaged in a cedar wood box and bottled in hand-blown glass, a serial number and signature from the bottler also appears.
One would only need to Google the name of this rum to find out why this is the among the favorites of so many...

1991 Rasta Morris Uitvlugt Distillery Single Cask 26 Year Old Cask Strength Guyana Rum (700ml)
    GUYANA
    $499. 00
    Bottle
    $5988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.8%

A very desirable Uitvlugt, bottled by Belgian indie, Bert Bruyneel (of Asta Morris fame) who, not content with whisky, is constantly on the look out for high quality, tasty rums. In order to accommodate the category he wasted no time and started a new label - 'Rasta Morris'. The outturn from this cask was 216 bottles with only a small parcel making its way to Australia.

Long closed and now highly collectable, derived from the Dutch for ‘out-flow’ or “owt-flut”, Uitvlugt is a village on the coast of Guyana, the name of a river, and most importantly, the name bestowed to a legendary South American distillery. Established around 1750, Uitvlugt's double wooden pot stills were famous for producing a heavier style of rum.  However, like many rum regions through the 19th and 20th centuries, production declined in Guyana. The equipment at Uitvlugt was mothballed around 2000, and the acclaimed Diamond Distillery is now the custodian of its historical stills. 58.8% Alc./Vol.

Martinique is a French island with the largest number of distilleries in the Eastern Caribbean. Both pot and column stills are used. As on other French islands such as Guadeloupe, both rhum agricole (made from sugar cane juice) and rhum industriel (made from molasses) are produced. These Rums are frequently aged in used French brandy casks for a minimum of three years with 'Rhum vieux' (aged Rum) frequently compared to high-quality French brandies.

J.M rum is distilled on Martinique's smallest estate, located in the northeast in Macouba, where the sugar cane grows on 28-degree vertical slopes in rich volcanic soil at the foot of Mount Pelée. Due to its unique location with sea breezes, rainforest, an intense microclimate, and high cloud cover, Rhum J.M. cuts their sugar later than other distilleries (most cut the cane at the end of February or early March, whereas Rhum J.M. does not cut theirs until late March or early April). This practice, combined with the region's peculiar environment are said to be contributing factors to the unique flavour to this unusual rum.

Tasting note: [2002 release tasted] Beautiful clarity in the glossy gold / amber colour. Initial whiffs pick up suggestions of icing sugar and coconut oil, developing more substantial notes of sweet dried grass and spicy mince fruit pie after several minutes coaxing. Assertive yet nicely balanced in the mouth with semi-sweet, cane-like, grassy flavours. Dilute golden syrup on the finish. Warming, black jelly bean aftertaste. Yum! 92 points 46.6% Alc./Vol.

An interesting combination of bourbon input (8 years in barrel) followed by finishing in a 228 litre x Armagnac cask makes for an unusual agricole experience.

Tasting notes: Polished copper colour. Armagnac dominates the nose with fruit mince pie, clove and cinnamon over fresh raisin / dried apricot-like notes. Second pass detects dark chocolate and orange zest. The vibrancy and freshness of the agricole carries brandy-like flavours suggesting fruit mince pie and marzipan. Concludes mildly tannic with bourbon soaked oak, light glace cherry and brandy cream sauce shining in the aftertaste. Better the second time around - the 2004 edition was a little overwhelmed by oak. 460 bottles produced. 41.5% Alc./Vol.

A combination that really works. Great stuff!

Finished in x Cognac casks, some tasters reported this to be the driest of the Abuelo 'Finish Collection'.

Tasting note: Impressive burnished mahognany colour. Shy; oak shavings, peppercorns, vanilla bean and cola. 5-10 minutes fails to amplify the aromas beyond moderate. Entry is light, dryish with hints of honey, crème caramel and vanilla building with caney/grassy sweetness. Finishes more cognac-like with hints of dried fruits (fig / pear), cedary oak and butterscotch. Quite elegant, understated and edging towards the drier side of rum. Beautifully done in spite of the lazy aromatics, however re-tasting several days later found the nose much improved. 40% Alc./Vol.

Ron Barceló was founded by Julian Barceló, a Spanish émigré born in Mallorca. He founded the company in 1930 under the name Barceló & Co in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, having arrived in the country in 1929. It did not take long for the Barcelo brand to became an essential reference amongst local rum brands, growing into one of the biggest and most prestigious Dominican Companies.

During the 1980s, Ron Barceló became the most popular rum in the Dominican Republic. Exports grew and the company began distribution outside of the Caribbean and America. In 1992, the company began an international campaign and, by 1994, Ron Barceló was exported to over 10 countries, with Spain as its biggest consumer. It's currently exported to over 50 countries and the range has just arrived in Australia.

Tasting note: Beautiful polished copper. Attractive scents of dried coconut, vanilla slice, and dilute golden syrup. Creamy yet dry; middle weighted palate features pronounced vanillas with hints of roasted nuts. Finish is engagingly spicy adding length and depth. Ends with the vanilla / caramel theme playing out with reasonable length. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Carribbean Class.

Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. The Biggest Selection of Rums online in Australia. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad.
