Wild Island Botanic Gin (700ml)SCOTLANDReduced from $119.99$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 43.7%Crafted in a century old copper still at Langley Distillery in Birmingham using British Wheat, this new Scottish gin comes infused with six native hand foraged botanicals from the Isle of Colonsay in the Scottish Hebrides, with a further ten as the base. These include water mint, meadowsweet, sea buckthorn, heather flowers, lemon balm and bog myrtle. Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose is slightly reticent, and it's clearly a contemporary style so juniper isn't salient. Still, the palate manages a herbal, citrus complexity that makes this engaging uncut. Textural, oily, spicy and long through the finish with herbal tea notes and a host of botanicals playing second fiddle. The gin comes suitably presented in a distinctive bottle displaying an expressionist water colour representation of Kiloran Bay on Colonsay. 43.7% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Wild Island Botanic Gin is a refreshing and Summery gin. At its heart is the deep flavour of the dried lemon peel and the character of the essential oils has been carried into the gin well. This is balanced with floral notes from the heather flowers, sweet notes from the Meadowsweet, some tartness from the Sea Buckthorn, and a more refreshing kick at the finish from the lemon balm and mint. Ideal in a Tom Collins or Gin and Tonic, garnish with a slice of lemon and serve with a light tonic to bring out the citrus flavours. - theginguide.com
... it smells quite gentle with the juniper coming to the fore in the glass. It’s very zingy on the tongue with lots of flavours, leaving an aniseed-esque flavour on the tongue. It’s punchy and bold, and certainly not your restrained British G&T of times gone by. Talking of tonic, mixed up with some Fever Tree this tones down and becomes slightly sweeter and creamier (thanks meadowsweet and sea buckthorn). The floral notes become more obvious and the drink has a better balance to it. I found this a little intense when it was straight, but now it is a G&T the sweetness balances the more vibrant tones. Perhaps it’s because I’m not a liquorice fan, but I can REALLY taste the liquorice here which is spoiling it slightly – although if that’s your thing then this might just be the drink for you. - jennyinbrighton.com

The answer – it’s both. So appropriately one side of the bottle is labelled “Limited Edition Chase Juniper Vodka” while the other side is labelled “Williams Chase Single Botanical Gin. Perhaps it’s just bi-polar? Like other chase vodkas, and indeed gins, this is based on potato spirit distilled at Chase’s family-owned farm distillery from potatoes grown on the farm. Appearance: (First batch, bottle no 908 of 1000) Crystal clear. Aroma: Clean and fresh – even freshening, leathery eucalyptus with delicate piney spice. Zuidam Oude Genever 5 Year Old Single Barrel Genever (1000ml)NETHERLANDS$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 38%A modern take on traditional Genever, produced from a mash of equal parts malted barley, rye and corn. After a week of fermentation, the mash is distilled three times in a pot still. Part of it is then distilled a fourth time with botanicals including juniper, licorice and aniseed, the whole finally matured for 5 years in 200 litre American oak casks. The end result is bottled as a single barrel release - a concept typically used in the Scotch and American whisky industry, primarily sold in the Netherlands and Germany. 38% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Very dominant wood aromas, which is to be expected from new oak casks. Vanilla, fudge and wood shavings. There's a whisper of aniseed here as well, while the palate leaves a little more room for the spirit to shine. It has a creamy mouthfeel, and there are some pine needles, as well as coriander. Worth a try if you're into aged grain spirits. 88 points - distiller.com

- Zuidam Dutch Courage Dry Gin (700ml)NETHERLANDS$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 44.5%The Zuidam Distillery was started back in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam as a deliberately contained operation with one small copper still. It took more than a decade to forge their present reputation as the finest distillery in the Netherlands. In 1989 Zuidam expanded their warehouse to 600 square meters and one production line. Presently, both sons, Patrick and Gilbert, run the distillery under the watchful eyes of their parents. With four brand new copper stills, over 1000 oak barrels, four production lines and modern tank storage, Zuidam is now a state of the art operation, however, they have held on to one throwback from the past - Windmills. These are used to mill the grains destined for their Genevers and Malt Whisky. It not only preserves this iconic piece of Dutch heritage, but more importantly, the producers believe that the traditional slow grind causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grains and thus helps preserve the wonderful aromas. "Dutch Courage" is a reference to Genever's past, when Genever found favour across the English Channel; first as a medicine (Samuel Pepys wrote in 1660 of curing a case of "colic" with a dose of "strong water made with juniper") and then as a beverage. British soldiers encountered it as they marauded around northern Europe in the Thirty Years War and found it much to their liking. They brought back a taste for the "Dutch Courage" as they called the 'medicine' (often taking a good slug before battle), and inevitably made their own contribution to the lexicon of spirits: The word 'genever' was corrupted by the English to 'Ginever' and finally abbreviated to 'Gin'. Other reviews... Wonderful beginning aroma of dried citrus zest/rind; following aeration the bouquet turns steely, spicy and earthy. The palate entry is tart, sublimely orangey and borderline sour; at midpalate the angelica, juniper and cardamom take charge, mingling perfectly with the orange rind. Ends silkily with flashes of orange zest and juniper. First class. 96-100 points - www.wineenthusiast.com ...Appearance: Crystal clear. Aroma: A scent rather like just-watered earth (orris root?) mingles with the more upfront juniper and citrus. Taste: Invigorating, clean and fresh, slightly steely with citrus zestiness, angelica, juniper, cardamom and a hint of peppery spice. Aftertaste: Long, cleansing pine fresh finish with parma violets.Outstanding. 5 stars. - www.diffordsguide.com

Zuidam Zeer Oude Genever (1000ml)NETHERLANDS$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 38%The Zuidam Distillery was started back in 1975 by Fred van Zuidam as a deliberately contained operation with one small copper still. It took more than a decade to forge their present reputation as the finest distillery in the Netherlands. In 1989 Zuidam expanded their warehouse to 600 square meters and one production line. It not only preserves this iconic piece of Dutch heritage, but more importantly, the producers believe that the traditional slow grind causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grains and thus helps preserve the wonderful aromas. Zuidam's Old Genever is distilled from a mash of malted barley, rye and corn. Small stills produce a very delicate and fruity new spirit. Part of this new spirit is then distilled again over a proprietory mixture of botanicals including Italian juniper berries and orris root, Moroccan coriander, whole Madagascar vanilla beans, Indian liquorice root, Sri Lankan cardamom and angelica root. After blending, the spirit is then filled into small barrels. Zuidam use new barrels of American White Oak as well as barrels that have previously held Bourbon or Olorosso Sherry. The Genever ages rather quickly in the warm and dry atmosphere of the distillery warehouse. Evaporation losses are high (between 4% and 5% per year). Tasting note: The brilliant bright gold appearance is pure and clear. Paprika, white pepper and liquorice bullets feature in the opening stages with more grain and juniper evident in the second pass. A satiny mouthfeel develops with flavours of chamomile, olive bread and peppery juniper towards the finish. Ends pleasantly warming, light and long. 38% Alc./Vol. - Zuidam Rogge (Rye) Genever (1000ml)NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 35%If you're looking for something truly different in the world of gin, this is it.
Zuidam, who produce one of the finest rye whiskies on our shelves, have created a very special genever that combines the spiciness of rye mixed with the fresh flavours of juniper, licorice and aniseed. A 100% rye grain mash (50% malted / 50% unmalted) is triple distilled in a small pot still then aged in new 200 litre American oak barrels for a minimum of five years. After that period the botanicals are added. Half of the spirit is then redistilled before being blended with the other half and bottled. The result is the best of both worlds: a genever with the texture and depth of an aged spirit combined with youthful botanical zest. All bottles are hand labelled with a ribbon and a gold wax seal. Tasting note: [Vat 904 tasted] Brilliant gold. Wonderful opening scents of fresh picked dill, caraway and fennel with further exposure revealing back-seat juniper and accenting the sweet, underlying barrel qualities. Light to medium bodied, buttery mouthfeel; hints of dried herb and black pepper through the muted malty vanilla sweetness. So graceful and delicate as this concludes, lingering with hints of white pepper, vanilla and butter menthol lozenge late in the aftertaste. Deliciously different. A must try in the genre. 38% Alc./Vol.
We're serious about gin.
Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
