Laherte Freres Nature de Craie ChampagneChampagne, FRANCEReduced from $195.00$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkAurélien Laherte has been experimenting with a sans soufre (zero-sulphur) cuvée for several vintages, achieving success in 2018 with Nature de Craie. This cuvée is derived from two Premier Cru terroirs in Vertus and Voipreux, featuring vines planted in 1960, 1965, and 1987. The term "craie" refers to the chalky soils which lie on the lower slopes, which provide good exposure and and in turn providing fruit ripeness and no need for additional dosage. The hand-harvested fruit undergoes traditional pressing and maturation in neutral oak barrels, followed by aging under cork for 12 months. Laherte realised the secret to creating a cuvée with zero additions was to let the wine undergo full malolactic conversion, followed by bottling with zero dosage.

Laherte Freres Ultradition Extra Brut Champagne Disgorged March 2020Champagne,$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2021-2026)ABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkAurélien Laherte’s Ultradition showcases vineyards from 8 villages of the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay & Vallée De La Marne. 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir grown ecologically on limestone soils. The base wine is vinified in a combination of large format foudres, tanks and oak barrels, where it partially goes through malolactic fermentation. The NV Extra Brut Ultradition, the entry-level wine in this range, is wonderfully deep and fleshy, with plenty of Meunier character driving the blend. These vineyards are all biodynamically farmed and are not only rich in chalk and chalky clay (marl) but there is also flint and schist. It has been aged for just over two years in bottle following a first fermentation in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask. No dosage. A creamy white mousse sits gracefully above a pale straw coloured base that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Pronounced pear and citrus aromas stand out from the glass with baked bread and yeast lees characters then taking over. Finishes off with some lightly honeyed toast notes. Sculptured mouthfeel with energetic acidity racing through the elegant yeast lees, toast and citrus flavours. Some light brioche and almond nuances are also evident. The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs marries power with energy to a degree I have not seen before here. In this edition, the Brut Nature is decidedly powerful and broad, with less of the tension seen in some previous releases. It's as if all the Chardonnay flavors have been turned up to the maximum. Orange peel, apricot, chamomile and spice are some of the many notes that fill out the layers. The current release is based on 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 and 2015, all done in neutral oak. 2014 Laherte Freres Les Grandes Crayeres Blanc de Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$130. 00Bottle$1560.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2019-2027)ABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkAurélien Laherte’s second Blanc de Blancs bottling, Les Grandes Crayeres showcases Laherte’s two most mineral soils in Côteaux Sud d'Épernay. These parcels of 40-plus-year-old Massale selection are situated on a west-facing hillside composed of Campanian chalk with very little topsoil. The base wine is fermented wild in old barrels, aged three to ten years old, and does not go through malo. It then spent 30 months on lees in bottle, and a further nine months resting after disgorgement before commercial release. Dosage is 3-4 g/L.
A fine airy mousse slowly dissipates to reveal a pale straw base that has a very fine and persistent bead flowing through it. Refined aromas of baked bread, citrus and yeast lees are complexed by notions of toast, faint honeyed notes and subtle biscuity cashew nuances. Graceful, subtlety creamed in its mouthfeel and very long, the palate has an understated richness with flavours of yeast lees, baked bread and fresh citrus holding their own over some oily toast, light almond and chalky mineral characters. Finishes dry with crisp, chalky acidity. The long aftertaste building in richness as it lingers.

Part of a new collection that’s just reaching the market now, the NV Champagne Collection 245 is based on the 2020 vintage. (The trilogy of vintages in the collection are from the early ripening 2018, which is lighter and fruitier, the 2019, which is richer and more powerful, and the 2020, which is somewhere in between the other two.) The blend of the 245 is 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, and the rest Meunier. It has a reflective straw hue and offers notes of fresh almond, bread dough, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a fruity nature, it’s crunchy and fresh in the glass, with a lovely chalky texture, good refinement, a note of fresh nectarine, and a clean finish. Dry, but with a delicate rounded feel and some depth throughout, it opens to show more of its salinity and the delicate reductive smoke that frames the wine with oyster shell-like umami character. It’s approachable now but will age with ease.

Antonio Galloni – VinousAn extraordinary champagne experience that you’ll never forget! Tons of white chocolate on the savory nose pulls you into this concentrated and chalky champagne with rich candied citrus and mirabelle fruit. So much oily umami complexity right through the huge breathtakingly vivid finish. Just 10% of each vintage of Cristal gets the extra years of aging for release as Vinotheque. Tasted at the Cristal vertical tasting at the champagne house on July 6th, 2023. Drink or hold.

James SucklingA golden straw hue, the 2002 Champagne Cristal Vinothèque was aged for 11 years sur latte, and then an additional 5 years sur pointe, where they continued to riddle them every quarter, keeping the lees working while further sealing the wine from oxygen. It was disgorged in 2019, with a lower dosage of 6 grams per liter and a bit more bottle pressure than Cristal's base release. Smoky and complex, it shows off an incredible kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors with exceptional length. It’s a singular wine with fantastic umami richness and an expressive bouquet of apricot, ginger candy, frangipane, and praline. The palate offers a rich glycerol texture that takes this above and beyond, with a pinpoint mousse and a seamless spine of acidity. It’s showing incredibly well now, but there’s no need to hurry. It should drink up well over the coming two decades. Drink 2024-2050.

If the 2014 vintage was especially open and demonstrative, the 2015 Cristal is going to require more patience. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, crisp stone fruits, white flowers, crushed mint and subtle hints of buttery pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a deep, concentrated and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky extract and animated by a pretty pinpoint mousse. This is a serious, vinous Champagne that has considerable substance to age and may well evolve along the lines of the lovely 1985. Drink 2027-2050.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateI have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison, the 2015 is rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textual intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit, spice, ginger, chalk and dried flowers abound in a Champagne endowed with tremendous aromatic presence in a style that offers notable richness but in a lighter style than vintages such as 2012. There is a bit of the savoriness that is such a signature of the year, but it is nicely integrated into the wine’s fabric. Two later tastings in my office strongly suggest that 2015 has already started to shut down a bit, which is a shame, as it may be hard to read for some time to come. The 2015 is a rare Cristal in this tasting (the other is 2002) that incorporates all 45 plots within the estate. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2022. Drink 2025-2040.

Antonio Galloni - VinousFor the warm and dry vintage this has tremendous freshness and elegance. The complex nose of citrus blossom, mint, lemon and lime zest opens up slowly as this aerates in the glass. The wine’s ample structure is still quite firm, which is a vintage characteristic, the mousse very fine but also very lively for an eight-year-old champagne. Cristal fans will love this as it is, but a year or two more in the bottle will do a lot for the very long mineral finish of this youthful masterpiece. A cuvee of 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, picked from all 45 Cristal vineyard plots. Tasted at the Cristal vertical tasting at the champagne house on July 6th, 2023. Drink from release.

James SucklingI had the opportunity to taste the 2015 Champagne Cristal twice, both at the house in Reims as well as at my home office. On both occasions, the wine offered a terrific balance of decadence and notable freshness for this vintage, which was highly expressive on opening. The release reveals layered custardy notes of lemon balm, incense, apricot, and hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied, the mousse is fluffy and rounded out beautifully through the palate. Round and approachable, it has a well-managed richness along with underlying savory sapidity and saline to keep this going over the coming three or more decades, with a chalky tannin structure to support it. Drink 2025-2050. This was only the second vintage where Mr. Lécaillon opted to source from all of the 45 plots dedicated to Cristal. (Since then, he chose to draw from even more plots for the 2018.) Drink 2023-2053.

Audrey Frick - jebdunnuck.comThis mouthwatering Champagne has an ethereal quality, with a frame of chiseled acidity and focused precision to the pointillisme-like, vibrant mousse. Yet this shows depth and generous expression, with the finely spun notes of patisserie apple and blackberry fruit opening beautifully on the palate and through the minerally finish, with notes of grated ginger, blood orange granita, salted Marcona almond and anise. Drink now through 2035.

A satiny mousse flows to the top of the glass with a pale gold coloured base lying underneath. A fine stream of tiny bubbles flowing through its veins. Nosing reveals a rich combination of baked bread, roasted almonds, dried honey and yeast lees followed by cashew, citrus and toast notes. Refined and airy the palate is graced with pear, baked bread and yeast lees flavours that have a silk like feel. Notions of almond, light dried honey and toast also chime in. Well meshed it finishes dry and slightly chalky with sculptured acidity and a long tense yet expressive aftertaste.

The 2012 Cristal is another absolutely stellar wine this flight of recent releases. Rich, vinous and beautifully textured, the 2012 has been nothing short of magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. In the glass, the 2012 is radiant and luscious, yet it possesses remarkable transparency and striking aromatic depth. Light tropical notes develop in the glass, giving the 2012 a real feeling of exotic beauty. The 2012 is the first vintage of Cristal done with 100% organically-farmed fruit, an approach introduced gradually starting with the 2007 that has profoundly changes Cristal, especially in its aromatic breadth. Two thousand twelve is the vintage where endless trials and experiments in farming and winemaking are fully realized. The 2012 is just stunning. It’s as simple as that. Dosage is just over 7 grams per liter, the lowest it has even been for Cristal. Drink 2022-2052.

Antonio Galloni – VinousAromas of clear honey, crisp green orchard fruit, white peach, pastry cream and dried white flowers introduce the 2012 Cristal, a full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine that's built for the cellar. Broader, more textural and more muscular than the 2008 Cristal, with seemingly even greater reserves of structuring dry extract, the 2012 is incisive and searingly chalky. This is the first Cristal produced exclusively from organically farmed fruit, and it marks the opening of a new chapter for Louis Roderer. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, vinified without malolactic fermentation and disgorged with 7.5 grams per liter dosage. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has once again excelled himself. Drink 2022-2050.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateSuch attractive, fresh, floral aromas here with fine bread, hints of white almonds and a lemon edge. White cherries and strong, chalky minerals, too. The palate has a very composed feel. Seamless and quite silky texture with effortless length and flow. Very fluid and composed. Very late, warming almond flavors. This is very long and smooth with a velvety finish. Super long pinot weight. Resolved and drinkable, but will age so well.

James SucklingA classic beauty, fresh-faced and focused today but with a harmonious grace of form suggesting a long career ahead. 2013 Louis Roederer Cristal Rose ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$899. 00Bottle$10788.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A candidate for wine-of-the-vintage honors in Champagne, Roederer's 2013 Cristal Rosé is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, red berries, stone fruit, freshly baked bread and tangerine oil. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, the vintage's bright girdling acids are amply cloaked in exuberant, expressive and notably concentrated fruit; so while this Cristal is as tensile and age-worthy as one would expect, it's also impressively fleshy and generous given the year. Concluding with an intensely sapid finish, the 2013 isn't as overtly structured as the muscular, tightly wound 2012: rather, it's the 2013's alliance of cut and flesh, precision and charm that's so compelling this year. This is another banner vintage for what I consider the reigning champion of the region's tête de cuvée bottlings, and it will be worth an effort to acquire. Drink 2021-2061.

William Kelley – Robert Parker’s The Wine AdvocateThe 2013 Cristal Rosé is searingly intense right out of the glass, just like the Blanc, except it has a bit more fleshiness because of the skin contact on the Pinot. Cristal Rosé has one of the best track records for aging in Champagne. I suspect the 2013 will join the ranks of the epic vintages, but it is painfully tight today. The blend is 55% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ) and 45% Chardonnay (from Avize and Mesnil) done in the classic Roederer infusion style in which Pinot Noir is vinified on the skins and then blended with Chardonnay to complete the fermentation. About 25% of the lots were done in oak, while malolactic fermentation was blocked. Drink 2028-2053.

James SucklingIf you're a Champagne lover and this doesn't do it for you, I don't know what will. A magical Champagne that's just about as good as it gets, the 2013 Cristal Rosé reveal a lighter salmon hue to go with a rich yet also subtle nose of orange blossom, white flowers, toasted brioche, and chalky minerality. It takes some coaxing but is incredibly complex aromatically and offers more spice, dried strawberry, and library book-like nuances as it sets in the glass. Richly textured on the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and has surprising opulence as well as a great mid-palate, all of which are balanced by a vibrant spine of acidity. It starts out seemingly soft and easygoing yet changes with air, and it possesses an incredible mix of suppleness, texture, and precision that is something to behold. It can be drunk today or cellared for 20 or 30 years, possibly even longer. Drink 2021 - 2051.

Wonderfully complex aroma rises from the glass as soon as this is poured. So complex on the nose and uncompromisingly dry but well balanced on the palate. An enlightened expression from a season of extremes, this has intensity, ripeness and depth of fruit that is underpinned by chalk soil-derived structure and freshness. Complex nose with lemon and grapefruit aromas, as well as closed red apple, blood orange, light biscuit spices and toasted hazelnuts. Super fresh. The palate starts pithy and fleshy with pink grapefruit, blood orange, red apple, sliced strawberry and nectarine. Expansive and mouth-filling build that is driven by concentrated fruit, Then it tightens and turns to a more mineral edge, before smoothly honed phenolics finish it long. It is 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, 32% oak fermentation in those same proportions, no chaptalization, no malolactic and a dosage of 7g per liter. From organically farmed grapes. Very complex, it strikes a natural balance and is very drinkable already, though will develop well for more than a decade in the cellar.

JamesSuckling.com (March 2022)The 2014 Cristal is another in a long line of gorgeous wines from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. A dazzling, vibrant Champagne, the 2014 impresses with a stunning combination of fruit density and linear energy that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of 2012 and 2008. At times, the bubbles feel totally wrapped up in waves of creamy, resonant fruit to the point the mousse is barely perceptible, especially with aeration. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted, leaning very much into the citrus, floral and mineral end of the spectrum.
The blend is a classic: 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay taken from 39 of the 45 parcels that comprise the Cristal estate. In most vintages, the Pinot components are roughly equally split between Verzy/Verzenay and Aÿ, but in 2014, Lécaillon favored Verzy and Verzenay, two north facing villages in the Montagne de Reims (where rain was less problematic) known for conferring saline energy and vibrancy. Rain was much more of an issue in the Vallée de la Marne. Consequently, some of the Pinots in Aÿ were diluted and did not make it into the blend. Chardonnays were sourced from historic plots in Avize, Mesnil and Cramant. About 32% of the lots were fermented in wood, the rest were done in tank. As always, all of the malolactic fermentations were blocked. In 2014, the growing season was marked by a good spring followed by a cool, wet summer and then very favorable weather in September. I vividly recall that there was not much enthusiasm for the vintage at the outset. Today, though, opinions are starting to change, at least with regards to some wines.
Since 2012, Cristal has been made entirely from organically-farmed grapes, an approach Lécaillon adopted in order to achieve a more ideal and parallel relationship between sugar and phenolic ripeness. “Champagne is always a battle between picking too early and rot,” Lécaillon has often said during our tastings. One of the other benefits of organic farming is that it naturally lowers yields. As Champagne fans know, the great wines of the 1950s and 1960s were made at a time when yields were in the 5,000 kilo per hectare range. Then, in the 1980s, widespread planting of higher-yielding clones led to an entirely different situation in the vineyard. Today’s permitted yields are 11,000 kilos per hectare, with some variation in years that present unusual growing conditions. With organic farming, yields for Cristal are in the 7,000-9,000 kilo per hectare range. Another innovation at Roederer has been a focus on higher-density plantings with newer vineyards, an approach that encourages low production per vine. But back to the wine. Drink 2024 - 2064.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous (February 2022)The 2014 Cristal is a terrific effort that transcends the vintage. Bursting from the glass with expressive aromas of ripe citrus fruit, nectarine, white flowers, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and fleshy, with an exuberant core of fruit that's girdled by racy acids, resulting in a wine that's simultaneously chiseled and demonstrative, meaning that early appeal doesn't come at the expense of the requisite tension for long-term cellaring. Concluding with a long, aromatic and intensely chalky finish, it is a brilliant Champagne that will offer a broad drinking window. This bottle was disgorged in June 2021 with seven grams per liter dosage. Drink 2021 - 2050.

William Kelley - Robert Parkers Wine Advocate (February 2022)This vivid Champagne shows up-front and linear definition, thanks to rapierlike acidity, with finely meshed flavors of ripe black cherry and mandarin orange fruit, raw almond, anise and cardamom spice as well as a touch of honeycomb, which all unfurl and expand on the fine, creamy palate. Sleek acidity continues through to the finish, with additional racy character provided by a streak of minerally saline and chalk, which gains momentum through the midpalate and rings out on the well-cut, lasting finish. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2040.

Alison Napjus - Wine Spectator (June 2022)It’s always educational, and a treat, to taste the latest vintage of Louis Roederer’s flagship Cristal Champagne. This cuvee is sourced from 45 separate plots covering just under 200 acres spread between the villages of Verzeny, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Aÿ, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Cramant. The vineyards are farmed either organically or biodynamically and are planted to a 60/40 split of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Each parcel is vinified separately and for the 2014, only 39 parcels made the final selection, with the blend being roughly 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. The wine has the malolactic fermentation blocked and is brought up in a mix of 32% oak and 68% tank. This was a warmer year that saw fabulous springtime weather, a slightly cooler, rainy summer, and a great end of the year. The 2014 fits in nicely in recent vintages and has a style all its own, showing a fleshy, round, nicely concentrated style reminiscent of the 2012 yet not quite the precision of either the 2008 or 2013. Gorgeous and classic Cristal stone fruit, chalky minerality, white flowers, almond paste, and subtle toast emerge on the nose and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, almost creamy texture, terrific balance, and a great finish. It’s surprisingly approachable yet I’ve no doubt it will evolve nicely given its mid-palate depth and overall balance. It’s beautiful today and a terrific Cristal to enjoy over the coming two decades or so. It’s unquestionably more approachable than either the 2013 or 2008, but not far off qualitatively. Louis Roederer Collection 242 Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2021-2026)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkCollection 242 is the new multi-vintage cuvée which replaces the Brut Premier. The Collection 242 shares the same philosophy as the Jacquesson 7 series and Krug’s Edition wines, which are based on a younger vintage blended with some older reserve wines.
Based on the 2017 vintage with a blend of 44% Reserve wines from the 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 vintages (10% of which were aged in oak). The wine is composed of 42% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir & 22% Pinot Meunier sourced equally from Vallée de la Marne, the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims.
Dosage: 8g/lPours with a frothy white mousse that show good hold over a pale straw to straw coloured base that has gold tinged edges and a fine, profuse bead flowing through its core. Lifted baked bread, citrus and yeast lees scents drift out of the glass with ample intensity followed by a faint whiff of dried honey and oily toast like notes. Well endowed with richness the mouthfilling palate features baked bread, citrus and yeast lees flavours over a toasty back drop with some subtle almond characters also present. Gently creamy mid palate, it finishes dry with racy, crisp acidity and a long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 4-5 years.

So much for the composition and concept of the new NV Brut Collection 242, but how does it taste? This debut release is very impressive indeed, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, peach, ripe citrus fruit, toasted almonds, fresh pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and textural, it's concentrated and layered, with lively acids, an enlivening pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish. Brut Premier was already a very persuasive wine, but the new Brut Collection nevertheless represents a step up. Drink 2021 - 2035.

Medium-to full-bodied with layers of fruit and vivid intensity. 42% chardonnay, 36% pinot noir and 22% pinot meunier. 8 grams dosage. Four years on the less. The Champagne of Kings, this somewhat mythical Champagne has a cult following amongst pop and rap stars. Despite the hype this brings it never to fails to live up to it’s legendary status with wine critics, who consistently lavish it with high praise.Other Reviews....
I've revisited Roederer's 2013 Cristal four times since I reviewed it in April of this year—including several times from my own cellar—and I had to admit that even my lavish praise didn't do it full justice. Combining the cool-vintage cut of 2008 with the more completely mature fruit of 2012, the 2013 Cristal might well be said to represent the perfect combination of the two from a purist's perspective. The wine unwinds in the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers, almond paste and citrus oil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless and multidimensional palate that's intense but weightless, with racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. Drink the 2008 Cristal on its own, and you're unlikely—to put it mildly—to have any complaints; but compare it directly with the 2013 and you'll see Roederer's rapid progress in the vineyards writ large. Drink 2025 - 2060.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)This is quite chalky with firm phenolics that frame the wine beautifully. It’s medium-to full-bodied with strawberries and earth. Dense, linear and intense. Hints of brioche and pie crust at the end. Very structured and gorgeous. Salty and lightly chewy. One third of the base wines fermented and aged in oak. Connoisseur Champagne. From organic vineyards of the Roederer domains. Smaller production than normal. Seven years on the lees. Give it two or three years to open.

JamesSuckling.com (July 2021)The 2013 Cristal is a wine of extraordinary precision and tension. Searing acids drive a bold, racy Champagne that won’t be ready to offer its best drinking anytime soon. In recent vintages, Cristal has been quite open on release. That is far from the case with the 2013. Readers should plan on being quite patient. The blend is 60% Pinot Noir (from Aÿ, Verzy, Verzenay, Beaumont-sur-Vesle) and 40% Chardonnay (Mesnil, Avize, Cramant). Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon was especially selective and used only 30 out of the potential 45 plots that are typically available for Cristal. About 32% of the lots were done in oak, the rest in steel, with the malolactic fermentation blocked across the board. It was an October harvest, the sort of harvest that has become increasingly rare in Champagne. Lecaillon describes the summer as similar to 2012, but adds the vines were a month behind in their development. In tasting, the 2013 reminds me of the 1996 in its austerity, even more so than the epic 2008. Drink 2028-2053.

Antonio Galloni - VinousExotic hints of tangerine and candied ginger are an enticing entrance for this vivid Champagne, accenting a finely meshed range of ripe green apple and cassis fruit, with rich notes of chopped almond, brioche and lemon curd. An underscoring streak of salinity gains momentum through the mouthwatering finish, echoing as it rides the plushly creamy mousse. This is decadence in a sleek and graceful package. JamesSuckling.comSublime and delicate on the nose, this wine is such a baby at the moment, you will need to clear a space in the cellar for this one.
I felt almost poetic writing the notes for the 2013, summer meadows, juicy peaches, fresh strawberries, lemon zest, creamy lemon posset, peach blossoms and toasted hazelnut crumble. A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, the 2013 has spent 4 years on its lees and another 6 months resting after disgorgement but I would be really keen to see this in another 10 years time. The potential for this to hold on to its incredibly taut and balanced acidity whilst letting the fresh, fruity and floral flavours develop into something mature and complex with rich nuttiness, candied citrus zest, dried fruits and a savoury umami element ripe for pairing with a rich dinner like roast pork with crackling and roasted seasonal vegetables. Patience has its rewards. Drink 2020-2033.

Antonio Galloni – VinousDisgorged October 2016 and will be the first Cristal to be released ten years from harvest when it is offered in 2018. 35 parcels used from a possible 45 in this vintage. The assemblage is 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay. This is so fresh and tense and mineral with extremely exuberant chardonnay notes on the nose of white peach, lemon and yellow grapefruit, and hints of almost brambly sous bois aromas. The yeast characters are also super fresh, and there are subtle woody notes, with a hint of vanilla bean and light spices. The palate is super long, and very pure, powerful and focused. It drives deep and taut. Pinot noir is a strong core and the chardonnay sits at the edge offering lemon and white nectarine sorbet flavors. Staggeringly concentrated, yet the balance makes it seem airy and light. Acidity is perfectly positioned, and the power is intense and long. The nutty bouquet encapsulates some aldehydes and oak aromatics, while the palate is at once delicate, crisp and powerful. It feels immediate and rich, as opposed to linear and long. The wine has wonderful richness and amazing balance, considering the lack of dosage. It has a mineral rather than fruity personality. The creaminess from long lees maturation and low gas pressure enables this remarkable texture. A thoroughly impressive and convincing wine - indeed, a stroke of genius. Huon HookeRoederer's 2009 Brut Nature is compelling. Powerful, ample and creamy, the 2009 has more than enough natural richness and texture to carry the wine with no dosage. The Brut Nature emerges from vineyards in Cumieres, where the wines are naturally tense, which creates a fascinating push and pull with the ripeness of 2009 and no dosage approach. Of all the grand marque Chefs de Caves, Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon is the closest to his vineyards and the most artisan in spirit. That comes through loud and clear in this fabulous Champagne. Roederer's 2002 Cristal is a fabulous wine! Originally released in 2009, it was re-released in March this year—and was sold out in a very short time. The Cristal I tasted at Roederer in May 2018 was disgorged in 2010, after seven years sur lie. Its amazing richness and concentration makes it a forerunner of the 2015 and follows the 1999. Only two times—2002 and 2015—the fruit from all 42 plots reserved for Cristal was used for the Cristal. "I couldn't do any better blend than the one assembling all the 42 plots," says Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, stressing that at that time only two hectares were farmed biodynamically. As a result of the conversion to biodynamic farming, Lécaillon promised himself the production of even more beautiful, vital and balanced wines, and you can feel his satisfaction whenever he speaks of the cuvées that are yet to come such as 2012 and 2015, the latter of which he calls "the new 2002." Back to history: the nose of the 2002 Cristal shows a deep, ripe and elegant fruit with aromas of white chocolate, wet chalk, wild vanilla and pepper (typical for 2002) as well as terroir-driven truffle notes. Intense and very elegant in the mouth, this is a ripe, rich and concentrated yet also pure and vital Cristal with great finesse, elegance and mineral complexity. It's a sublime Champagne right now, although it's more wine than Champagne. Drink 2018-2050.

Long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has produced yet another in a string of superb Champagnes with the 2007 Cristal. Rich, powerful and enveloping, the 2007 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. The aromatics alone are captivating, but then the wine opens on the palate, revealing layer after layer of flavor to match a multi-dimensional, kaleidoscopic personality that will leave Champagne lovers weak at the knees. The 2007 is 58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir, which is to say a bit more Chardonnay-leaning than is the norm. The 2007 is striking today, but it should also age effortlessly for several decades. It is also without question one of the very finest new releases of the year.

The 2012 Brut Nature Rosé derives from biodynamically cultivated vineyards in Cumières, and this is the first time Roederer has ever released a rosé without dosage. Offering up aromas of warm bread, orange zest, red berries, oyster shell and rose petals, the wine is medium to full-bodied, brisk and incisive, with racy acids and a tight-knit, mineral core, complemented by a pinpoint mousse. Concluding with a penetrating, saline finish, this will unwind with a couple of years' bottle age, though true to the ambitions behind it, it will always remain a more minimalist expression of Champagne. It's a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, its hue derived from "cold infusion" before pressing of a small percentage of the Pinot Noir in the blend.

- 1997 Louis Roederer Cristal ChampagneChampagne,$270. 00Bottle$3240.00 DozenClosure: Cork
Notes sourced from Louis Roederer.
Louis Roederer is unique in Champagne owning two-thirds of the vineyards for their total production covering the Pinot Noir sub regions of “Montagne de Reims” and “Vallee de la Marne” with Chardonnay from the “Cotes des Blanc”. By 1995, recent acquisitions hadincreased Louis Roederer's holdings from 180 hectares to nearly 190 hectares, ranking 97.5% on the official classification scale. In 1876, Tsar Alexander II asked that his personal champagne be presented in crystal bottles, thus giving rise to the very first prestige cuvee. Today, the Cristal bottle exemplifies the quest for perfection which inspires the House of Louis Roederer to provide its demanding and refined clientele with exceptional Champagnes.
Vintage Conditions: The freak weather conditions experienced in Champagne, of the most savage intensity, led Louis Roederer to fear the worst, but a glorious September saved the harvest and ensured the quality of the vintage.Following a remarkably harsh winter, spring frosts destroyed 16 hectares of Louis Roederer vineyard from Verzenay to Verzy. Persistently wet and cold weather after the flowering then triggered repeated attacks of mildew. Fortunately, warm and sunny conditions during themonths of August and September, ensured a quality yield which was as unexpected as it was exceptional. The lightly laden vines, particularly those of the Pinot Noir vineyards, gave good quality heterogeneous yields composed of very healthy bunches. The sugar content wasvery high and total acidity was generally satisfactory.
Cristal is made from the finest cuvees pressed from the highest quality grapes from the Champagne Louis Roederer vineyards. Today it is still produced in limited quantities, always as a vintage wine and only in exceptional years. A truly fine Champagne, Cristal ischaracterised by its finesse and elegance (derived from the high proportion of Chardonnay in the blend), and its enticingly delicate bouquet and perfect balance.
Tasting notes: Made from a blend of pinot noir 55%, chardonnay 45%. Yellow green colour with fleeting glints of gold. The nose is rich and intensely fruity, with a masterful balance of freshness and maturity. Notes of citrus on a background of red berries, are followed by a subtle toastiness plus warmer notes of baking (Tarte Tatin) and wood (almonds), from the partial fermentation in French oak barrels. The palate is rounded and vinous, but with all the delicacy and freshness which comes from a wine perfectly poised between youthfulness and maturity. The mousse is an endless stream of deliciously creamy bubbles filling the mouth with softness through to a finish of exquisite length and crispness. An elegant, stylish wine with a crisp delicacy but already a hint of maturity, the 1997 reflects the vintage, cold at the outset but warm and sunny by harvest.
Serve well chilled. Richly perfumed, Louis Roederer Cristal 1997 is an exquisite aperitif or celebratory Champagne. The strengthand finesse of Cristal make it an excellent accompaniment to delicate dishes including shellfish such as scallops, lobster and crayfish, John Dory fish and caviar.

2008 Louis Roederer Cristal ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenCellar: 8 - 10 Years (2026-2028)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkIn 1845, Louis Roederer acquired 15 hectares in the Grand Cru vineyards of Verzenay. The idea—which was quite unusual at a time when grapes had little value—was to become a wine grower in order to master the entire process of creating his vintage wines. Ever since, every Louis Roederer vintage originates exclusively from their own vines, which is rare in the Champagne region. The quest for a diversity of terroirs, crus, parcels, and grape varieties in the vineyards was rapidly integrated by the House of Louis Roederer. A groundbreaking strategy was implemented, which involved buying specific parcels selected for their capacity to produce distinctive wines. This strategy is still a core component of the House’s continuing development.
The Louis Roederer estate cultivates the 3 traditional grape varieties: Chardonnay is appreciated for its minerality, finesse, and elegance; Pinot Noir’s solid constitution adds structure to the blends and prepares them for ageing, Meunier is a slightly less refined grape variety, whose adaptability brings harmony and softness to certain cuvées.
The grapes in the plots are meticulously gathered by hand and are collected in the buckets and pressed on the site of the harvest. This precise selection process and plot-by-plot vinification ensures that the origins and traceability of the grapes are respected and provides a perfect record of the fruit from each row of vines. Hence the natural equilibrium of each parcel is preserved, and the vines are protected from external influences. This brings out the finest qualities in their wines.A superb creamy white mousse literally flows out of the glass leaving in its wake a straw pale gold tinged base wine that’s finely threaded by a very persistent bead. Very refined the nose offers up a complex bouquet of toasty yeast lees, cashew and baked bread followed by roasted nuts, citrus and a hint of oiliness. Rich and exceptionally long with a light satiny feel the palate balances power, finesse and tension superbly. Flavours of yeast lees, baked bread and subtle citrus fruits fill the mouth, melding into delicate oily toast like characters, roasted almonds and honeyed cashews. Dry creamy finish with finely tuned fresh acidity concluding very long and fine.

This is an ultra precise Cristal, finishing with a mere suggestion of savoriness and warmth to come. Impressive on release, this will be at its best drinking from 2025.

The 2008 Cristal is a perfect wine, and Champagne simple does not get any better. This incredible wine offers a beautiful perfume of clean, crisp fruits, layers of complexity in its toasted spice and white flowers, and an utterly seamless, yet powerful style on the palate. This is a rich, decadent expression of Cristal yet it’s still crystalline and elegant, with no sensation of weight, and it just glides over the palate. Haut Couture at its finest and this majestic, profound, legendary Cristal can be drunk anytime over the coming 2-3 decades. Drink 2018-2038.

The 2008 Cristal Rosé is all tension, nuance and class. Fresh and utterly brilliant, the 2008 bristles on the palate with pure pedigree. In the glass, the 2008 is at once translucent, weightless and powerful. Readers should be in no hurry to drink the 2008, a wine that will age effortlessly for many, many decades to come.

Antonio Galloni – VinousSuper fresh with all the DNA of the regular ‘08 Cristal. It heads on a chalky, restrained tangent of delicately spiced cherries with fine white pepper and crushed stones. The palate has a thread of silky, smooth pinot flesh that counterbalances the acidity of the chardonnay. Superb textural build, fine layers adding weight through the finish. Super long, fine and fresh red cherries, wrapped in super tight yet silky acidity. Drink in 2025.

2012 Louis Roederer Cristal ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2020-2030)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkNote: Product has come from a private collection and as such may have some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
The Champagne of Kings, this somewhat mythical Champagne has a cult following amongst pop and rap stars. Despite the hype this brings it never to fails to live up to it’s legendary status with wine critics, who consistently lavish it with high praise.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

Antonio Galloni – Vinous
Aromas of clear honey, crisp green orchard fruit, white peach, pastry cream and dried white flowers introduce the 2012 Cristal, a full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine that's built for the cellar.

Such attractive, fresh, floral aromas here with fine bread, hints of white almonds and a lemon edge.

A classic beauty, fresh-faced and focused today but with a harmonious grace of form suggesting a long career ahead. There's a creamy, viscous quality to the mousse that swathes the palate, carrying finely detailed flavors of poached quince, Mandarin orange preserves, toasted almond and pickled ginger. Mouthwatering throughout, with a pleasing, soft zestiness to the mineral-laced finish. Drink now through 2035.

60/40% pinot noir/chardonnay, 32% vinifed in old oak casks, no mlf, 7.5g/l dosage. Forget the hype of New York, this is a beautiful wine, with a burst of sunbeams in a springtime garden of white flowers. The length of the palate and its aftertaste are magnificent. A total contrast to Krug in style.

James Halliday's Top 100 2020
As the first 100% biodynamic Cristal, entirely from Roederer-owned vineyards, this is an important milestone. This latest incarnation is a great Champagne with its density, elegance and poise. Still impressively young, the wine is taut, tightly wound and textured. At the same time, it has pure, ripe white and citrus fruits that are perfumed, and an important part of this wine’s long-term future. Drink at the earliest from 2023.

French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.
The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
