Ployez-Jacquemart Extra Quality Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2021-2026)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkThe vibrant and striking Champagnes of Ployez-Jacquemart were a welcome surprise among the many tasted in recent months. Established in 1930 and now run by third generation winemaker Laurence Ployez, the family have their own vineyards in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages including their hometown of Ludes, Mailly-Champagne, Villedommange, and Vertus. These are supplemented with purchased grapes from longstanding contracts that have been in place for over 30 years, mainly in Grand Cru Chardonnay villages.
Winemaking is meticulous, with only first press juice used in their wines. Following fermentation in a mix of tank and barrels, wines are aged nose-to-punt, or sur pointe, in lieu of being aged on their side. This approach provides the antioxidative and aging benefits of the lees while not allowing the wines to become too rich from the lees contact. Laurence is keen to express the various sites and vintage characteristics, so while the wines are aged between 4 and 12+ years on less, use of reserve wines is limited and sometimes not used at all. Similarly dosage is minimal averaging around 3-4 grams per litre.
The standard bearer for the house, the Extra Quality Brut receives a minimum of 4 years on lees and is blended from Premier Cru and Grand Cru fruit, 60% of which is Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the balance Chardonnay.Ranked No. 65 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines for 2020.

2015 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$1050. 00Bottle$12600.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985. Drink 2025 - 2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Mar 10, 2023)The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022. Drink 2027-2045.

Antonio Galloni - VinousVery complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach and mirabelle tart aromas. Bold and rich, particularly on the mid-palate, but with a great deal of subtlety and delicacy for the vintage. This is already delicious, but at the finish you really taste how this has been made for the long term. Great drive and persistence right at the end. Drink or hold.

This is the 21st vintage of Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill, for whom a personal cuvée of the best champagne was created, the details of the wine still secret. Widely believed to be over 60% pinot noir, the balance chardonnay, all grand crus. Its full-bodied generosity flows through the very long palate and finish.

Pours with a generous over flowing mousse that holds well over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. Rising to the surface is an exceptionally fine bead that shows great persistence. Intense citrus and yeast lees aromas intermingle with baked bread, traces of cashew, brioche and chalk. The 2013 Blanc de Blancs is another terrific wine in this range from Pol Roger. It offers up a mélange of apricot, honey, chamomile, dried herbs. JamesSuckling.com (July 2022)Pol Roger's newly released 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs is very appealing, unwinding in the glass with scents of crisp orchard fruit, citrus zest, sourdough bread, pastry cream and almonds. Medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, it's more chiseled than the richer, more concentrated 2012, with racy acids and a gently reductive edge, concluding with chalky grip. This is a real classic in style and should develop beautifully with age on cork. Drink 2021 - 2040.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (April 2021)This expressive blanc de blancs indulges the palate with its creamy, lightly plush texture and bright and juicy acidity, a lovely canvas for aromas and flavors of ripe pineapple and apricot fruit, elderflower, lemon curd and salted almond. Alison Napjus - Wine Spectator (December 2021)The Chardonnays are exclusively sourced from grands crus of the Côte des Blancs and come from the villages of Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger, and Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger. In the purest house style, this 2013 shows an exuberant, complex bouquet. There are pastry, dried herbs, spices, pear, orchard fruits and some autolysis aromas. Creamy, round and sweet, the palate is perfectly balanced with a racy yet chalky finish. Keep it in your cellar for two years; it will only get better. Drink 2022 - 2025.

Alison Napjus - Wine SpectatorIn March 2022, Pol Roger released the 2013 vintage of its iconic cuvée, Sir Winston Churchill. First launched at Blenheim Palace in 1984 with the 1975 vintage (which was released in magnums only, a decade after the death of the great man), this 2013 is the 20th release. Pol Roger does not divulge the blends of its cuvées, but we know that this one is predominantly composed of Pinot Noir, plus a touch of Chardonnay, both sourced from grands crus villages. We also know the dosage: 7 g/L. While the 2013 vintage was catastrophic in France, Champagne is doing well, especially the Chardonnays. Budbreak was later than usual, and the weather was cool and rainy until June. Fortunately, the summer was hot, sunny and dry until the first days of September. Rain returned on September 10 and brought significant attacks of grey rot, which affected the vineyards. The 2013 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has an elegant yet refined bouquet of lemon, orchard fruit and spring flowers, intertwined with pure notes of brioche and pastry. The palate is crystalline, with racy acids and an elegant, penetrating finish. There is a lively touch of mint. This is a particularly delicate and tense iteration of the cuvée. Very charming. The 2013 Vintage is a rich, effusive wine that beautifully captures the personality of the year in which ripeness and acids are both elevated. Pastry, orchard fruit, citrus peel, spice and dried flowers build in an extroverted, racy Champagne that is an absolute delight. JamesSuckling.com (July 2022)Pol Roger's just-released 2013 Brut Vintage is a beautifully chiseled, incisive wine that will appeal immensely to purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus zest, white flowers, crushed chalk and hints of fresh sourdoughs, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and precise, with a nicely concentrated and tightly wound core, tangy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. After the rich, muscular 2012 vintage, the 2013 represents quite a contrast; I'm not sure we'll see its stylistic like again for some time, so readers with classically inclined palates will want to stock up—advice I'll be following myself. Pol Roger's newly released 2012 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is showing brilliantly, bursting from the glass with youthful aromas of honeyed pears, toasted brioche, pomelo, fresh pastry, green apple and mandarin orange, with hints of stone fruit emerging with time in the glass. Full-bodied, vinous and textural, with an enveloping core of fleshy, concentrated fruit, bright acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. More muscular and vibrant than the generous and charming 2009, the 2012 ranks alongside the 2008 and 2002 as one of the three finest renditions of Sir Winston Churchill this millennium—and in style it resembles a hypothetical blend of those two vintages. One of the casualties of COVID-19 was a planned vertical tasting of Pol Roger's Cuvée Winston Churchill, which would have provided some additional context for the latest iteration of this textural, gastronomic, Pinot Noir-dominant bottling. Since that project is deferred to later this year, I've opted to publish my review of the newly released 2009 in the meantime. While the 2009 is structurally more open than the concentrated, tightly wound 2008, it's also still quite youthfully primary, and I would encourage readers to resist its deceptive accessibility right now and wait at least a few years for more complexity and aromatic range to emerge. That said, I can't claim that it was a hardship, even at this early stage, to work through several bottles of the 2009 for this report.
Pol Roger's 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has turned out very well, offering up a demonstrative bouquet of golden apples, clear honey, hazelnuts and fresh pastry that's still quite primary. Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. This is an expressive, deceptively immediate rendition of this bottling, yet despite its charm out of the gates, readers willing to wait at least five years will be rewarded with significant additional complexity. Drink 2023-2050.

As always, this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne is a great wine. In this vintage, it is fuller than usual, perhaps less structured—a true reflection of the vintage. Like all releases of this cuvée, the wine will age magnificently. Drink now or hold for at least 10 years to get full maturity.

One of the great Champagnes both for its richness and its longevity, this latest incarnation is superb. The wine's richness is linked to the ripe fruit and the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend. It also shines in the perfect balance between the texture, the minerality and the integration of the fruit. It can be enjoyed now, but it will be better from 2020 and then for many years to come.

I have long held the view that Pol Roger consistently offers the best value for money of all the great Champagne houses, the only agonising question was how to choose between this and the 2004 Vintage Brut. The Blanc de Blancs is 100% Cote des Blancs Grand Crus, and the wine spends nine years on tirage, with hand-riddling (almost extinct these days). Pale quartz-green, this sets the heart racing with its super-finely chiselled purity and elegance, flavours of citrus wrapped in a wedding veil of minerally acidity.

A suitably monumental wine for a monumental man in most vintages, here scaling the peak of magnificence, the 14th release since 1975. It is predominantly pinot noir (Tom Stevenson speculates 70-80%), and is 100% Grand Cru. Straw-coloured, it brings another dimension of flavour, texture, length and depth into play; still tightly wound up after 10 years on tirage, fruit, honey and citrussy acidity are folded together in perfect balance. Another highlight in this vertical, the 2002 Salon is also fascinating to taste after the 2004. Rich, opulent and intense, yet also very classic in the Salon house style, the 2002 possesses superb persistence and depth. The radiant vintage has softened the contours and given the wine fabulous depth to match its decidedly powerful personality. At the same time, the 2002 remains quite youthful. Next to the brighter and more finessed 2004, the 2002 offers more of a baritone-inflected expression of Chardonnay.

Antonio Galloni - VinousOtherworldly in its piercing intensity, focus and sense of potential that is still remarkably yet to come, this is a staggeringly great Champagne. Superfine aromas of lemon and grapefruit plus commanding chalky minerals and an ethereal floral layer too, still very primary and unevolved. The palate is scintillating, moving with incredible velocity and lightning-like intensity - acidity is the driving force. Citrus flavors are locked in deep and the precision is almost impossible to comprehend, as is the length. Near perfect. Drink it in 10+ years.

2002 Salon Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$2999. 00Bottle$35988.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....

JamesSuckling.comThere's vibrancy and a sense of finesse to this rich and creamy Champagne, which is defined by racy acidity and a streak of chalky minerality. Offers an expansive palate of glazed apricot, oyster shell, toasted almond and spun honey flavors, accented by hints of ground ginger, dried lemon peel and marzipan. The finish is racy and persistent. Drink now through 2030.

2018 Savart Le Mont Benoit Extra Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$375. 00Bottle$4500.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkFred Savart is one of the most engaging and energetic vignerons currently in Champagne. Based in the village of Ecueil where most of his holdings are located, Fred also farms a handful of vines across into Villiers-aux-Noeuds, along with most recently accessing plots in Le Mesnil and Oger. His wines are largely based on Pinot Noir, with a smaller amount of Chardonnay, and while initially there was a focus on fermentation in stainless steel, more increasingly his wines are raised in barriques and demi-muids. Each of his wines are born out of inspiration and intuition rather than any sort of set formula, and are routinely some of the best expressions of terroir viewed through the vagaries of vintage.
Le Mont Benoit is a 50-year-old single parcel vineyard in Villers-aux-Noeuds co-planted to 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay, which are picked and pressed together.

The 2018 Extra Brut Premier Cru Le Mont Benoit unwinds in the glass with scents of orange oil, nectarine and peach mingled with hints of white flowers, buttery pastry and frangipane. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with a racy spine of acidity and a fine-boned, elegant profile, it concludes with a bright, chalky finish. Drink 2022 - 2038.

From Le Mesnil sur Oger, Savart's 2017 Extra Brut Haute Couture is showing very well, bursting with aromas of citrus oil, confit peach, white flowers, buttered toast and almond paste. Full-bodied, rich and vinous, with a layered core of ripe, fleshy fruit and a long, expansive finish, it's one of the high points of the range. Drink 2022 - 2032.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 2022)The 2017 Extra-Brut Haute Couture Le Mesnil/Oger is wonderfully extroverted from the very first taste. A rush of lemon confit, tangerine oil, white flowers and spice races across the palate, framed by sweet French oak that adds an exotic, flamboyant touch. I can’t decide if this is more wine or Champagne, but it is gorgeous. The style leans very much in the realm of exuberance, and yet all the elements are so skillfully balanced. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October, 2021. Drink 2022-2030.

Produced exclusively from Chardonnay in an Ecueil lieu-dit better-known for Pinot Noir is the 2015 Extra-Brut Premier Cru Le Mont des Chrétiens, a small cuvée that's vinified in 500-liter barrels, without malolactic, and it was disgorged a few months ago with only two grams per liter dosage—one gram less than Savart's usual three for this bottling. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of lemon curd, white flowers, fresh melon, pastry cream and mandarin, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and chalky, with a tensile profile despite the warm vintage, concluding with a mineral finish. Note that this bottling used to be named Dame de Coeur.

Due to be disgorged four weeks after my visit was the 2015 Extra Brut Premier Cru Les Noues, a new bottling from a parcel of Pinot Noir vines that used to go into Savart's l'Ouverture cuvée. Unwinding in the glass with a complex bouquet that mingles waxy citrus rind, red apples, berries and blanched almonds with hints of oyster shell and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied and ample but incisive, with excellent depth at the core, a lovely spice of acidity and a long, precise finish.

The NV L’Expression is 100% Pinot Noir from five parcels in Ecueil of 60-70 year-old vines on sandy, clay-rich soils. Interestingly, the plant material is the same as in Le Mont Benoît, and yet here the wine is decidedly taut and bristling with energy, something that is accented by the decision to bottle this wine with no dosage. Hints of white pepper, chalk and mint add expressive overtones to this super-expressive old-vine Blanc de Noirs. This edition was disgorged in January 2018.
