While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Complex meaty and spicy nose. This effortlessly marries the wild and refined sides of this Grand Cru! The fruit character stands on a mighty tower of tannins that are at once fine and slightly herbal. What an amazingly energetic finish! Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comDelivers a velvety texture that wraps around flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and spice. This is holding back a little now, with excellent balance and a finish that should develop even more length with time. Shows a solid core of fruit. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorHere too there is moderately generous wood to be found on the earthier and more sauvage-inflected aromas of black cherry liqueur and discreet floral wisps. There is better energy and good delineation on the only slightly more concentrated flavors that do deliver impressive length on the balanced and firm finale where a similar hint of bitter pit fruit emerges. It's not clear whether this can, or will, add body and mid-palate flesh with a few years of aging. Drink from 2032+.

This is like staring into an abyss, but being overwhelmed with joy. The essence of fine pinot noir and of Burgundy, which you don’t need to be any kind of expert to appreciate. Enormously concentrated, but so graceful, this makes you want to forget everything else you are supposed to be doing. Lean back and let yourself be overwhelmed. Drink or hold.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)This is what makes Burgundy so special – it’s so easy to enjoy, with amazing black-cherry fruit, yet it’s so deep and complex. Notes of peonies, orange rind and sweet berry fruit introduce the 2019 Château Corton-Grancey Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied wine that's chewier and more muscular than the Vigne Au Saint. It's a more serious wine, built for some bottle age.

The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.

This is reserved to the point of being almost mute and the nose requires aggressive swirling to reveal the liqueur-like aromas of plum, spice, newly turned earth and a hint of wood. There is outstanding intensity and mid-palate density to the succulent medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere finish that is at once quite firm yet racy. While the prior wines should drink reasonably well after only a few years of cellaring, this beauty will require a bit more patience. Highly recommended.

Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, anise and plenty of spice nuances are trimmed in just enough oak to notice. The suave, palate coating and solidly concentrated flavors possess a richer and more generous mouthfeel where equally fine-grained tannins shape the less mineral-driven but slightly longer finish. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has more depth and fruit concentration compared to the Clos des Angles. The nose displays a mélange of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and a touch of loam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, just a slight lactic note on the entry, segueing into a more marine-tinged latter half. A pinch of black pepper appears toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2026-2042.
93 points
Neal Martin - VinousAlthough the vines for this Fremiets are very close to those for the Clos des Angles bottling, the style is very different – it is much more mineral, almost salty, with bright black fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a texture with abundant tannic grip and an almost chewy feel. The domaine farms nearly 1.6 hectares on the steeper slopes with shallow soils. Although it is not as reserved as the Clos des Ducs, this would benefit from five years of age before opening. A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. I almost always prefer the d'Angerville Taillepieds to their Champans but that could well change in 2022 as this is outstanding. Drink through 2034+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled squab, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly carnal finish.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. Drink 2028-2048.
94 points
Neal Martin - VinousThis monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink 2027 - 2055.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterThe archetype of Volnay for Guillaume, and it prepares the way for Clos des Ducs. A clear bright purple. This is one cuvée that is a touch more structured than its 2019 counterpart, and it will require a bit of patience.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 21, 2022)The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru certainly has the most opulent bouquet amongst d’Angerville’s ‘20s with exuberant black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of fresh fig and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with quasi-chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline and poised with a harmonious finish not dissimilar to the Taillepieds. Satisfying persistence here, but in keeping with d'Angerville's other Volnays, it is quite serious in personality and this will oblige cellaring. Quite regal. Drink 2026-2046.

Neal Martin - VinousFairly deep fresh purple, the 2020 Champans has less immediate weight of fruit at first on the nose, than the impressive Taillepieds but I suspect it is all there. The discretion continues on the first half of the palate, but thereafter there is a wealth of dark but fresh raspberry, a little more structure behind, both good acidity and tannins.

Readers will have a fun time debating the relative merits of d'Angerville's 2018, 2019 and 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs in 20 years' time, as for now it is a very close-run thing. The 2020 is certainly superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, plums and berries mingled with spices, orange zest, peony and discreet hints of oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless palate that's bright, elegant and rich but refined. Of the trio, it's probably the 2020 that carries the sunshine and warmth of the vintage the most lightly, even though the year was, on paper, the most extreme. Drink 2030-2060.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2020 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru was picked around 23 August. It has a highly perfumed bouquet with rose petals, red cherries, raspberry and incenses, beautifully defined and wonderfully controlled. The palate also conveys a sense of effortlessness that is utterly beguiling. Very harmonious, balletically-poised thanks to its fine bead of acidity, this Clos des Ducs unfurls in the glass with a lilting, very pure and almost balletic finish. Quite saline on the aftertaste such that it urges you back for another sip. Sophisticated (as usual) yet delicious. Drink 2026-2055.

Neal Martin - VinousPure deep crimson purple. Like the Champans, the nose here is also restrained though obviously with density to follow, when it is ready. The fruit swells across the palate, almost lush in the middle, some tannins too, firm at the finish. This is still very backward and has not completely filled out its framework yet. Maybe just a little riper than the perfect balance. Will be the last to be bottled, and has all the component parts to make a great wine.

This too is beautifully elegant with its ripe and pure aromas of essence of red cherry liqueur, violet and rose petal scents. The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. This needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundUnwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, spices and rose petals, d'Angerville's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with an ample core that's underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin and girdled by lively acids. Seamless and integrated, it's marked but not dominated by the sucrosity of fruit that defines the vintage.

An attractively floral nose exhibits notes of rose petal, violet and lavender along with ripe black pinot fruit, plum, spice wisps and a dollop of wood toast. The very rich, even opulent, large-bodied flavors are at once sleek but plush, all wrapped in a sappy and sneaky long finish that is also clearly intended for extended cellaring. A ripe and very spicy nose combines notes of anise and sandalwood with those of plum, dark cherry and a subtle application of wood. A very densely fruited nose only grudgingly reveals liqueur-like aromas of plum, dark pinot and plenty of earth elements. There is once again a beguiling sense of energy to the even more mineral-driven if less muscular flavors that display the classic youthful austerity of a fine Gravains, all wrapped in a balanced, long and complex finale. In contrast to several wines in the range, this is going to require some bottle age before it's completely ready for prime time. Drink 2025+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Gravains possesses the most vivacious and animated bouquet of Pavelot's 2015s: red cherries, crushed strawberry, iodine and hints of black plum later on. There is a lot going on within these aromatics that won't sit still. The palate is exquisite: wonderful balance, filigree tannin and a velvety texture all ticked off. There is a lovely saline note that surfaces towards the finish that exhibits tremendous depth, completing a top-class Savigny that will give years of pleasure. Drink 2019-2030.

Neil Martin – Wine Advocate (Dec 2016)Bright medium red. More complex and expressive on the nose than the Lavières, with fruit aromas of cherry and raspberry complicated by mint and resin nuances. Suave and fine-grained, delivering mouthfilling richness to its flavors of black cherry, dark raspberry and spices. Lovely intensity and definition here. Finishes with fully ripe tannins and noteworthy length. This should evolve gracefully. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Dominodes is cut from the same cloth as the Aux Gravains, albeit with more floral scents and more red fruit. It is just as beautifully defined and seductive though. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannin, superb mineralité, immense cohesion and energy that spills over on the chalky-textured finish. This is (yet another) outstanding 2015 from Domaine Pavelot who frankly has done little wrong this vintage. Drink 2019-2032.

Neil Martin – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 2020 Domaine Pierre Boisson Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$115. 00Bottle$1380.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
The fruit for this wine comes from the two Haute Cotes vineyards of ‘Les Chaignots’ in Orches, and ‘Sous la Velle’ in Baubigny.
An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
