Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Louis Boillot in concert with his wife Ghislaine Barthod and their son Clément Boillot-Barthod manage a fabulous array of old-vine vineyards in both the Cotes de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune. Whilst this Burgundian ‘red-royalty’ family hold no Grand Cru vineyards they turn out some of the most beautiful red Burgundy along the Cote d’Or.

An exuberantly fresh and pretty nose is formed by cool, pure and airy aromas of pomegranate, red cherry, raspberry. In the same vein there is a lovely sense of underlying tension and wonderfully refined if lighter weight flavors that are saline and stony before concluding in a bitter cherry-inflected finish. This is a classic Chambolle of lace and grace. Drink 2023+.

Boillot's 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village is, as usual, largely derived from the lieu-dit Beaux Bruns, and it is a great success this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, raspberries, rose petal, dark chocolate and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and beautifully pure, its ripe tannins cloaked in succulent fruit. It's an expressive, charming Chambolle with plenty of depth at the core.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a light, airy bouquet of breezy, carefree red fruit; a touch of cold stone emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh opening. There is plenty of vigor here, leading to a well-defined, sorbet-fresh finish with orange peel lingering on the aftertaste. Very fine. Drink 2021 - 2036.

80% comes from the village sector of Beaux Bruns with the balance from Derrière le Four. Fresh bright mid purple. There is the correct floral elegance here and the wine is very graceful on the palate, not massively concentrated but very come hither. The oak is sitting well with the fruit. Delicious and will be enjoyable quite young.

This is also quite floral-suffused with plenty of spice elements adding a touch of elegance to the ripe and mostly liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries. There is excellent underlying tension to the detailed and markedly finer though less powerful flavors that conclude in a moderately austere and sneaky long finale. This is a wine that should be reasonably approachable after 6 to 8 years but also one that should reward 12 to 15. Drink from 2032+.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées (Domaine Louis Jadot) reveals a deep bouquet of plums, dark berry fruit, exotic spices, orange rind and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with powdery tannins, tangy acids and a mineral finish, it's a real success.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a reserved bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, black pepper, allspice and just a hint of pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh and lightly spiced with a harmonious, almost Vosne-like finish where I just wanted to see a little more mineralité. Let’s see if it gains some during the remainder of its barrel maturation. Drink 2025-2042.

The very deep sour-cherry nose with delicate floral notes pulls you into the gravitational field of this remarkable Chambolle-Musigny. It manages to be riper and more concentrated than the wines of this appellation normally are, yet it retains fabulous mineral and blood-orange freshness that enables this to light up the night sky like a fireworks display. Very long and energetic finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

A decidedly sauvage-inflected nose is once again quite restrained and this requires aggressive swirling to eventually coax the aromas of violet, wild berries and plenty of earth character to reveal themselves. There is solid volume, power and evident muscle to the larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the impressively long finale. This isn't as refined as the Estournelles St. Jacques but it a good deal more powerful. Drink from 2032+.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers (Domaine Louis Jadot) is rich and muscular, bursting from the glass with aromas of cassis, orange oil, warm spices, woodsmoke and dark chocolate. The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is very composed on the nose with blackberry, briary, Earl Grey and light marine nuances on the finish. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands. Perfumed aromas of lavender, rose petal and red and dark berry coulis scents are trimmed in admirably discreet wood influence. The notably finer is a bit less powerful medium-bodied flavors brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract that buffers the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. At this stage of its evolution, this demonstrates lush dark plum and cassis fruit, with floral notes plus hints of smoke and spice. The texture is tannic and firm, with an impressive level of extract and a lingering, beautiful persistence on the finish. Jadot's hectare of the Clos St-Jacques, acquired in 1985 from the Clair-Daü family, has long been one of the jewels of its estate. It is located at the centre of the Clos, producing a wine of tremendous refinement and elegance. Jadot destems the grapes and ferments gently before ageing in cask (30% new). Drink 2025 - 2040.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is excellent, wafting from the glass with aromas of orange rind, dark berries, cherries, licorice, black truffle and exotic spices. What a crazy nose, but in the best sense! Mulberry and blood orange – what a combination! Huge concentration and huge freshness, with zestiness that's really uplifting. And in combination with the great minerality that makes this an exceptionally exciting wine for the appellation. Dramatic vitality at the exuberant and very long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

A lovely wine, with spicy, expressive fruit that recalls wild strawberries, flowers and spice. The texture is ethereal and perfumed, yet the wine is not lacking in substance nor length. Although it seems approachable even now, there is definitely great ageing potential here. The 0.42ha of the Clos de Bèze belonging to Jadot came from the acquisition of Domaine Clair-Daü in 1985. The grapes were destemmed and gently fermented. Drink 2025 - 2040.

More subtle wood influence is present on the very pretty and ripe red pinot fruit scents that are nicely laced with hints of spice, especially anise, along with cool floral wisps. One of the more reserved wines in the range on the day of my visit was the 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot), a full-bodied, concentrated and vibrant wine evocative of red berries, pomegranate, sweet spices and rose petals. Deep and tightly wound, it will reward further élevage and bottle age, as the raw materials are of obviously high quality.

Moderate amounts of wood and menthol surround the nicely spiced aromas of red and dark raspberry that display a floral top note. There is impressive density to the delicious and more elegant medium weight plus flavors that terminate in a very compact, powerful and beautifully long finish. One of the highlights of the range, the 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) mingles aromas of sweet red berries with hints of raw cocoa, spices, licorice, loamy soil and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's velvety and concentrated, with considerable depth and mid-palate amplitude despite its elegant, seamless profile.

The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet of raspberry coulis, wild strawberry and crushed limestone aromas and a little singed leather in the background; there is fine complexity and focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, soy-tinged red fruit and a slightly conservative, restrained finish. More cohesive than the Charmes-Chambertin, it doesn’t quite convey the complexity of the Clos-de-Bèze, yet it should still age with style. Drink 2024 - 2042.

Deepish red purple, lighter rim, oak on the nose. Dense red fruit with a savoury note. The Jadot holding is furnished with ancient Clair Dau vines from the 1920s. Their 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin is mind blowing on the palate, not just for the intensity, but the nobility. Old vines happy in their work and still in very good health! Interestingly, this is aromatically quite similar to the Chapelle though as is usually the case, it's even spicier. The exceptionally rich big-bodied flavors possess outstanding mid-palate volume and concentration thanks to the abundant dry extract that coats the palate and does a fine job of buffering the very dense but fine-grained tannins on the powerful and strikingly long finish. The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a lovely bouquet that is wonderfully delineated and focused, presenting a quite intense mixture of red and black fruit tinged with sous-bois and light black truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with bold tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Smooth in texture, it exhibits dark chocolate and brown spice notes, some new oak just masking the terroir expression and delineation on the finish at the moment. Intense deep red colour, the nose is less immediate, but the fruit shows a succulent mouthful of very ripe fruit, on the edge of excess. A little bit of alcohol showing. Liqueur-like aromas of plum, kirsch, rose petal and violet are trimmed by notes of oak and menthol. Slightly more subtle, though still moderately prominent, wood sets off the very spicy, cool and elegant aromas that consist mostly of red and dark currant and iron-inflected earth. There is very good volume and verve suffusing the refined and classy middle weight flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract where the latter helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine shaping the compact, powerful and strikingly long finale. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is surprisingly reticent at first, offering quite strong earthy aromas and gradually opening with sage, thyme and mint. I feel that compared to the other Clos Saint-Jacques, the aromatics never quite click into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with the best backbone of the four Gevrey Premier Crus tasted from Jadot. Spicy black pepper and clove notes furnish the middle and the finish, which feels sustained and persistent, yet I wonder whether it will have the unadulterated charm of the Les Cazetiers when in bottle. Mid red crimson, some oak, slightly muddled fruit showing in the bouquet of this sample. In the plump cherry style, an attractive sweetness, enhanced by slightly over present oak, looking for the typical mineral behind and only just finding them. However, a sumptuous level of fruit, which continues on for a very long time, beyond the oaky carapace. I suspect that there are enough positives in this wine that my rating is on today’s sample is on the severe side.

The palate is detailed and precise with crisp acidity, maybe compact at the moment, yet the delineation on the finish is very commendable. I hope by bottling there is just a little more persistence on the aftertaste.

Bright, full red. Ripe but cool scents of dark raspberry, spices, minerals and bitter chocolate. Densely packed and very intense, conveying a subtle sweetness to its dark berry, mineral and spice flavors. Finishes very long and gripping, with suave tannins arriving late. With its energy and minerality, this beauty really resounds on the back end and perks up the taste buds. Jadot's vines are in the middle of the slope, which Barnier described as "not the most calcaire section of Cazetiers."

Complex meaty and spicy nose. This effortlessly marries the wild and refined sides of this Grand Cru! The fruit character stands on a mighty tower of tannins that are at once fine and slightly herbal. What an amazingly energetic finish! Drink or hold.

Delivers a velvety texture that wraps around flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, earth and spice. This is holding back a little now, with excellent balance and a finish that should develop even more length with time. Shows a solid core of fruit. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Here too there is moderately generous wood to be found on the earthier and more sauvage-inflected aromas of black cherry liqueur and discreet floral wisps. There is better energy and good delineation on the only slightly more concentrated flavors that do deliver impressive length on the balanced and firm finale where a similar hint of bitter pit fruit emerges. It's not clear whether this can, or will, add body and mid-palate flesh with a few years of aging. Drink from 2032+.

This is like staring into an abyss, but being overwhelmed with joy. The essence of fine pinot noir and of Burgundy, which you don’t need to be any kind of expert to appreciate. Enormously concentrated, but so graceful, this makes you want to forget everything else you are supposed to be doing. Lean back and let yourself be overwhelmed. Drink or hold.

The king of the cellar is the 2019 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru Les Quatre Journaux, a full-bodied, layered and muscular wine that's rich and concentrated, evocative of peonies, blackberries and exotic spices. Long and penetrating, this is very promising.

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée Heritiers Latour is very promising, mingling notes of berries and rose petals with hints of rich soil tones, warm spices and licorice. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's beautifully balanced and complete, with ripe tannins and a long, precise finish.

This is what makes Burgundy so special – it’s so easy to enjoy, with amazing black-cherry fruit, yet it’s so deep and complex. Wonderful richness, below which lies a major tannin structure, then the minerality and lively acidity kick in and push this out in the direction of infinity. Makes you glad to be alive! Notes of peonies, orange rind and sweet berry fruit introduce the 2019 Château Corton-Grancey Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied wine that's chewier and more muscular than the Vigne Au Saint. It's a more serious wine, built for some bottle age.

The Roy family has been cultivating grapes for four generations and in 1982, they began bottling their own production to fulfil their passion. With much effort and an acute focus on further enhancing their wines, Marc and his daughter Alexandrine bought a few more blocks of vineyards to increase the size of the Domaine to four hectares. In 2003, Alexandrine took over the Domaine with the intent on further raising the bar. Gradually, she reduced the yields, to produce fewer but better grapes with greater concentration of flavour. The vineyards are grown organically, strictly maintained, with great attention to detail.

The Domaine is composed of 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir for four different cuvées. The ‘Vielles Vignes’ or old vines cuvée is made from the oldest vines of the estate – averaging 70 years old.

A more floral and prettier nose features notes of both red and dark currant with more spice and a bit less earth. This is reserved to the point of being almost mute and the nose requires aggressive swirling to reveal the liqueur-like aromas of plum, spice, newly turned earth and a hint of wood. There is outstanding intensity and mid-palate density to the succulent medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere finish that is at once quite firm yet racy. Aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, anise and plenty of spice nuances are trimmed in just enough oak to notice. The suave, palate coating and solidly concentrated flavors possess a richer and more generous mouthfeel where equally fine-grained tannins shape the less mineral-driven but slightly longer finish. The 2022 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has more depth and fruit concentration compared to the Clos des Angles. The nose displays a mélange of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and a touch of loam aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, just a slight lactic note on the entry, segueing into a more marine-tinged latter half. A pinch of black pepper appears toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Drink 2026-2042.

Although the vines for this Fremiets are very close to those for the Clos des Angles bottling, the style is very different – it is much more mineral, almost salty, with bright black fruit, notes of violets and spice, and a texture with abundant tannic grip and an almost chewy feel. The domaine farms nearly 1.6 hectares on the steeper slopes with shallow soils. Although it is not as reserved as the Clos des Ducs, this would benefit from five years of age before opening. A restrained and intensely floral-suffused nose is reticent to the point of being brooding and only grudgingly provides glimpses of fresh dark berries and spice whiffs. The precise, highly energetic and super-fine middleweight flavors also exude evident minerality on the moderately austere and equally long finale. The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink 2027 - 2055.

The archetype of Volnay for Guillaume, and it prepares the way for Clos des Ducs. A clear bright purple. Today, the nose has a light reduction, but the fruit beneath is light on its feet yet with a fine tensile strength. This has a long backbone. An interesting, complex wine which one could easily pass over too quickly. Drink from 2031-2040.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet offers up notes of sweet berries, cherries, rose petals, raw cocoa and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, bright and velvety, it's deep and concentrated, with powdery tannins and lively acids. As usual, this is a touch more structured than Les Angles, though it's far from forbidding.

The 2020 Volnay Fremiet 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry sorbet and sous-bois aromas that offers a subtle balsam element with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant with crunchy red berry fruit. Good acidity here, classic in style with a linear finish, a hint of pepperiness on the aftertaste. Give this 4-5 years in bottle before broaching because it has an endearing feisty character. Drink 2025-2045.

Fuller crimson purple, with an explosive ripe raspberry nose. I would not want this to be any riper, but am very happy with it as it is. There is a certain tension on the palate, possibly a touch of blood orange in the fruit mix, enough acidity, fine-grained tannins and good length. The vineyard is on a good slope here which may help the freshness.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds opens in the glass with aromas of raspberries, blackberries, raw coca, loamy soil and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's layered and vibrant, with terrific intensity without weight. This is an unusually fine-boned Taillepieds that is likely to emerge as the most elegant of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 trio.

The 2020 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has an overtly floral bouquet: wilted rose petals, iris and violet, wonderful definition with plenty of crunchy red and black fruit comingling. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite firm tannins, crisp acidity, structured and quite "serious" with black pepper and a touch of clove on the pesistent finish. This will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2050.

Rich deep crimson purple. There is a spectacular nose here, with excellent concentration. This is high class ripe pinot, with an excellent sense of balance. The fruit completely fills the mouth, with superb purity, and just the right thread of acidity, balanced and profound. Thus far, this is the most backward wine in the line-up and will make a thrilling Taillepieds in due course.

Aromas of red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa, warm spices and forest floor preface the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, a medium to full-bodied, rich and structured wine that's firmer and more muscular than the Taillepieds this year. This is one cuvée that is a touch more structured than its 2019 counterpart, and it will require a bit of patience.

The 2020 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru certainly has the most opulent bouquet amongst d’Angerville’s ‘20s with exuberant black cherries, raspberry coulis, hints of fresh fig and black truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with quasi-chalky tannins, taut and fresh, quite saline and poised with a harmonious finish not dissimilar to the Taillepieds. Satisfying persistence here, but in keeping with d'Angerville's other Volnays, it is quite serious in personality and this will oblige cellaring. Quite regal. Drink 2026-2046.

Fairly deep fresh purple, the 2020 Champans has less immediate weight of fruit at first on the nose, than the impressive Taillepieds but I suspect it is all there. The discretion continues on the first half of the palate, but thereafter there is a wealth of dark but fresh raspberry, a little more structure behind, both good acidity and tannins.

Readers will have a fun time debating the relative merits of d'Angerville's 2018, 2019 and 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs in 20 years' time, as for now it is a very close-run thing. The 2020 is certainly superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, plums and berries mingled with spices, orange zest, peony and discreet hints of oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless palate that's bright, elegant and rich but refined. Of the trio, it's probably the 2020 that carries the sunshine and warmth of the vintage the most lightly, even though the year was, on paper, the most extreme. Drink 2030-2060.

The 2020 Volnay Clos des Ducs 1er Cru was picked around 23 August. It has a highly perfumed bouquet with rose petals, red cherries, raspberry and incenses, beautifully defined and wonderfully controlled. The palate also conveys a sense of effortlessness that is utterly beguiling. Very harmonious, balletically-poised thanks to its fine bead of acidity, this Clos des Ducs unfurls in the glass with a lilting, very pure and almost balletic finish. Quite saline on the aftertaste such that it urges you back for another sip. Sophisticated (as usual) yet delicious. Drink 2026-2055.

Pure deep crimson purple. Like the Champans, the nose here is also restrained though obviously with density to follow, when it is ready. The fruit swells across the palate, almost lush in the middle, some tannins too, firm at the finish. This is still very backward and has not completely filled out its framework yet. Maybe just a little riper than the perfect balance. Will be the last to be bottled, and has all the component parts to make a great wine.

This too is beautifully elegant with its ripe and pure aromas of essence of red cherry liqueur, violet and rose petal scents. The equally refined if a bit less mineral-inflected flavors possess excellent verve on the long and slightly less structured finish that also evidences a touch of warmth. This needs to develop more depth but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, spices and rose petals, d'Angerville's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with an ample core that's underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin and girdled by lively acids. Seamless and integrated, it's marked but not dominated by the sucrosity of fruit that defines the vintage.

An attractively floral nose exhibits notes of rose petal, violet and lavender along with ripe black pinot fruit, plum, spice wisps and a dollop of wood toast. An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
