Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. There is excellent concentration to the bigger-bodied and more powerful flavors that are blessed with ample amounts of sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm tannic spine shaping the complex, balanced and hugely long finale. Excellent. Drink from 2035+.

Opening in the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries, cassis, orange rind, rich spices, loamy soil, black truffles and toasty new oak, the 2020 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is full-bodied, ample and seamless, with a rich, enveloping core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's a terrific wine in the making.

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.

Deep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.

Purchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.

Produced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

There is a suggestion of herbal tea on the exuberantly spicy aromas of red and dark raspberry along with a hint of violet. There is a wonderful texture to the classy and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract before culminating in a compact, serious and built-to-age finish. This too could use better depth but the underlying material, and this wine's consistently outstanding track record, bodes well for the future. One to strongly consider. Drink 2031+.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets "Ancienne Cuvée Carnot" 1er Cru comes from Bouchard’s 3.7-hectare monopole. It expresses more delineation and detail than the Taillepieds, presenting a rather intoxicating mélange of red and black fruit laced with violet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, good body and density and a firm backbone. It clams up a little toward the finish, and it will demand three or four years in bottle before it becomes approachable.

2022 will be the last vintage for this wine as the parcel was sold after the harvest.
Deep dark red black tinged colour with a vibrant dark red hue. Pronounced black cherry and anise aromas are to the fore with some fresh herb, earth and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich dark to black cherry and anise flavours dominate the fleshy textured, mid weighted palate with dark plum, spicy vanillin cedar, earth and fresh herb accents tailing off through the back half. Sturdy tannin structure with a long ripe dark to black fruited finish that carries some gentle grip.

While the middleweight flavors are not as concentrated, they're even more mineral-driven and beautifully precise before culminating in a linear, youthfully austere and dusty finale. Audoin noted that 2022 may be the best vintage he has ever made for the Rozier, and he could well be right. Drink through 2032+.

La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are perfumed like aromas of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry which are complimented by hints of anise, earthy forest floor, spicy cedar and fresh herbs. Light on it’s feet, delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and subtle anise flavours flow across the palate with a feeling that’s both refined and supple. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy forest floor, delicate bramble and dried herb accents lend further interest. Showing ample freshness and polished tannins, it finishes expansive, savoury and spicy.

Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.
Showing plenty of depth is a dark red core that has black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Alluring scents of violets, red cherries and wild strawberries captivate the olfactory senses with whiffs of red liquorice, fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Long and beautifully refined across the palate with a beam of fresh acidity underpinning delicious red to dark cherry, a dash of sour cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits. Infusions of fresh herbs, forest floor and delicate spicy cedar nuances lie underneath. Understated in its power it possesses a polished tannin structure and supple mid palate feel. The expansive finish one of elegance and great persistence.

Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Soils here are light red with an element of sand, sitting atop a bedrock of hard limestone. Wines from Clos du Roy can be more elegant, aromatic, and approachable.
Red to dark red core with black toned edges and a bright red hue. Perfumed like in it’s intensity, the nose features alluring scents of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise which send the olfactory senses into a tail spin. Fresh herb, forest floor and spicy cedar notes are also evident. Rich, fleshy and possessing a gorgeous supple feel the palate is nonetheless fresh and light on its feet. Boasting a superb power wave, moreish red to dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours expand across the mouth like a peacocks tail. Adding further nuance are notions of spicy cedar, fresh herbs and forest floor. The wonderfully refined conclusion long, spicy and fresh.

Les Longeroies is a relatively large vineyard located in the north of the Marsannay sector on the border with Chenove. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.

An incredibly moreish Rose that’s impossible to resist.

Brilliant salmon pink colour with delightful scents of red cherry, peach and raspberry streaming out of the glass. Hints of rose petals, musk and wet stone adding further interest. Uber delicious, the moreish palate features raspberry, peach and pomegranate fruits which are delivered with fantastic intensity. Gorgeous supple textural feel with subtle musk, wet stone and mineral elements also chiming in. Superb drive finishing dry and fresh with a long, silky, stony mineral laden conclusion.

Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.
Made from Pinot Noir grapes this a light, energetic Rose with plenty of mineral zing. Brilliant salmon colour with a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass is a mix of strawberry and peach fruits followed by some pomegranate, light musk and stony mineral notes. Tangy citrus, grapefruit and strawberry fruits overlay a cranberry and stony mineral infused back drop. Finishes dry and zesty with crisp acidity and a refreshing aftertaste.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

Run by Laurent Charvin this small family estate has vineyard holdings of 8 hectares in Chateauneuf du Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement takes. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.
Dark red core with black tinged edges and a vibrant red hue. Elevated red raspberry and red liquorice aromas laced with clove emanate from the glass trailed by some earthy graphite like notes and peppered herbs. Rich and bustling with energy, delicious red raspberry, red liquorice and red cherry fruits fly across the mid weighted palate. Earthy graphite like characters and an explosion of pepper lie underneath. A combination of fresh acidity and a slightly muscular tannin structure lend tension to the long, elegant and vibrant finish.

Perfumed red fruits, rose petals, spice, and sappy, peppery garrigue all flow to a medium to full-bodied, seamless 2020 with silky tannins, wonderful balance, and a great finish. Situated in the northern part of Cotes du Rhone villages, Vinsobres is one of the most northerly Crus in the Southern Rhone and sits at a high altitude of 400 to 450 meters, higher even than the highest vineyard in Gigondas.
The 2019 Vinsobres is made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Mourvèdre. The fruit is mainly sourced from the high plateau and south-facing stony, limestone clay soil. Hand-picked fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented using only natural yeasts, with gentle elevage for three weeks after which it is matured in concrete tanks.

The 2018 Les Poyeux offers up a rich, sweet, black-fruited style, which may be more of a reflection of the vintage than the site. It's a lengthy expression, with ripe plum, black cherry a dash of black olive and vanillin signatures of oak maturation. While Les Poyeux tends to be an elegant, delicate style, this is a mouthful, with lots of structure and a long-scented tea-leaf and plum-like finish. While this will be released in early 2024, I would suggest waiting for another two to three years before approaching. Drink 2025-2038.

Subtle minerality on the nose, and like Le Clos this is showing roasted meat characters segueing into animal, but fainter than Le Clos. The palate has an even greater sense of purity and clarity of Cabernet Franc expression, with some hints of tobacco coming out in the glass followed by a sense of chocolate to the texture. There’s a greater sense of fine tannins in the background, partly due to oak (one-year-old barriques as opposed to old barriques used for Le Clos). It's less approachable than Le Clos and will need longer to express itself. Drink 2028 - 2040.

Generous, intense and salty on the palate, with fine tannins and lots of cherry aromas, this is a ripe, round and juicy Champigny with firm tannins that were still a bit dry when I tasted this wine (summer 2018) and needed some time to fully integrate. The wine should be on another level today. Drink 2023-2050.

The 2017 Le Bourg exemplifies the site's characteristic power and structure. This is not a wine that you should buy to drink now. This Cabernet Franc is almost beast-like compared with Les Poyeux, which is relatively accessible and graceful. It has rounded shoulders and finely woven yet structured tannins, which could be attributed to the clay topsoil of the Le Bourg site. It's a heady expression that displays the smoky bacon notes that can be found when it's a baby wine in barrel. It also offers mocha notes, and a heady perfume that lingers in the air as if you're in an Indian garden, followed with bergamot and tea leaf. This is a wine that moves with power and direction. Due for release - on allocation - to those lucky enough to be on the buying list for Clos Rougeard. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2017 Les Poyeux is a silken, elegant wine that's just starting to turn away from its primary fruits and develop some mellow tertiary characters. Very smooth in texture, an abundance of fine, powdery tannins coats the mouth. The 2017 is long, fragrant and sophisticated, with black fruit, woody herbs, Christmas spices and the merest whiff of nectarine, which I commonly find in Les Poyeux, year in, year out. Excellent. There's a gorgeous nectarine-like character that runs through Les Poyeux when young and the 2016 is no different. It's silky and seductive in a non-opulent way. Finesse is a word that crops up repeatedly when I tasted this wine: finesse of fragrance - this is delightfully perfumed, pure and precise; finesse of tannins with their fine chalky texture. It is long, scented and charming, thus it could be approached now if you wished but it has a medium to long life ahead. Drink 2022-2036.

The 2016 Le Bourg is a typically fragrant, heady and savory expression with smoky bacon characters meeting the red fruit. The clay portion of the clay-limestone soils in the vineyard tends to give a roundness to Le Bourg. There's also an innate sense of power within its mellow frame. There's a generosity here but it never becomes opulent nor heavy - this is Saumur-Champigny, after all, and it specialises in lightness. The tannins provide a relaxed, powdery veil for the mouth which suggests you could approach it now but if you're not on death's door and can wait, this has the componentry to go the long haul. Drink 2023-2045.

The 2015 reds from these two brothers are some of the gems in the vintage. The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is another sensational wine. Full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and yet with the ever present elegance and finesse this cuvée always possesses, it offers layers of black raspberries, crème de cassis, white flowers, licorice and cured meat-like aromas and flavors. It will certainly be one of the top handful of wines in the vintage.

This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Drink through 2030+.

The 2020 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was a blend of two instead of four cuvées this year due to the depleted production. It has a precocious bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, menthol and blood orange scents that gather momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with hints of allspice and tangy quince. It displays fine composure towards the finish with impressive length. This is a superb Clos des Epeneaux, though will it surpass the 2019? I’m not sure. Drink 2026-2050.

I tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time.

Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2025-2050.

The colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile.

This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink through 2029+.

Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. Drink through 2030+.

An all but invisible whiff of wood easily allows the earthy yet quite pretty and cool aromas of plum, violet, dark cherry and soft spice nuances to shine. The mouthfeel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors is also admirably sleek while delivering excellent length on the mouthcoating and well-balanced if presently linear finish. While I wouldn't describe the 2016 Clos as racy, there is good energy and outstanding power as the low yields really show. This is superb though definitely a wine that will benefit from extended keeping. Drink through 2036+.

The 2016 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux contains 10% whole-bunch fruit. I tasted from two cuvées, one from the young vines and one from the old. The young vines has clean and pure black cherry, red plum and lightly blueberry fruit that conveys a sense of energy. The palate is well balanced with succulent ripe black fruit, very fine tannin, a taut line of acidity but real complexity and tension from start to finish. I love the harmony and effortlessness of these younger vines. The cuvée from older vines demonstrated more black fruit with traces of undergrowth, a little more rondeur with impressive depth and structure on the persistent, marine/oyster shell-tinged finish. This has enormous potential and may challenge the supremacy of the 2015. Drink 2020 - 2040.

(I tasted the younger- and older-vine components of this wine, followed by the press wine and an approximation of the final blend, which will be bottled with about 13.5% alcohol): Sample from the younger vines (45% of the blend; vinified with 15% whole clusters): Good dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of red cherry and licorice. Surprisingly dry and backward, with its cherry fruit complicated by pungent licorice and herb notes. Finishes rather suave if a bit tart, with lingering notes of bitter cherry and herbs. Sample from the old vines (45% of the blend; from vines 67 to 93 years of age): Bright, dark red. Distinctly darker and riper on the nose than the younger vines, offering aromas of blueberry, black raspberry and spices. A step up in volume as well, with its dark raspberry and licorice flavors complicated by a licorice note. Very firmly structured wine with a longer, more tactile finish. From the press wine (to comprise about 10% of the blend): Softer, fatter and slightly saline. Finishes a bit tart but this juice should fill in the middle of the blend. An approximation of the final blend: Healthy dark red. Slight medicinal cast to the aromas of cherry, redcurrant and menthol. By far the best and most complete of these samples, offering serious low-yield richness but also terrific definition and energy. This sample somehow displayed captivating violet and mineral notes that were not apparent in any of its components. Lovely depth and restrained sweetness here. Finishes taut and long, with saline and herbal nuances and terrific underlying structure. This reminded me of a 2010; interestingly, last year Zinetti described his young '15 as like a denser version of 2010.

This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink through 2037+.

Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out. Drink from 2035-2050.

A tasting of each of the seven 2022 Musigny VV sub-sections and an approximate blend hint at a wine of almost voluptuous sensuality, with expressive mulberry and pomegranate fruit and hints of earth, smoke and liquorice that waft from the glass. The texture is powerfully tannic and dense but almost infinitely silky, and there is a dynamic interplay between the perfumed fruit and robust structure. Ideally, wait a decade before opening. Drink 2028-2080.

A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice, menthol and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm; indeed it's borderline rustic. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound
The 2017 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is also unusually saturated in hue this year, though Millet reports having done no more pigeage than usual. Offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, cassis, dark chocolate, peony and caramelized orange rind, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and elegantly fine boned, with chalky structuring tannins, a pure core of fruit and a long, fragrant finish. Despite its disconcertingly deep hue this is one of the most supple, elegant renditions of the de Vogüé Bonnes Mares in the last decade.

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish. Drink 2024-2048.

The de Vogüé Bonnes Mares comes from a sizeable 2.7ha on red clay soils and is always the most structured and ‘masculine’ of the domaine's wines. It's dark and intense, with violet and blueberry scents, a plush, concentrated palate, stylish 35% new wood and the depth and concentration to age. Rich and very appealing. Drink 2026 - 2037.

Red fruited with graphite like tannins and energetic acidity.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a dark red hue. Fragrant violet top notes are complimented by sour to red cherry and red liquorice aromas with some fresh herb, subtle dusty cedar and spice notes also evident. Red fruited and showing a shade more elegance than the 2021 Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanne, graphite like tannins and energetic acidity frame the palate. Some earthy cedar, fresh herb and spice characters linger underneath. Firms up on the mid length finish with a meaty feel.

Light and fresh yet concentrated with some gentle grip on the long savoury finish.
Deep dark red core with black toned edges and a dark red hue. Pretty violet, red cherry and winter strawberry aromas infused with earthy notes are trailed by some provincial herb and spicy cedar notes. Rich red cherry and strawberry fruits are light and fresh in their feel across the palate yet show ample power and concentration. Dusty earth, dried herb and spicy cedar characters ensue. Lending some gentle grip and a subtle rusticity to the long savoury finish are firm, grainy yet integrated tannins.

A ripe but cool and restrained nose features relatively elegant violet and rose petal aromas as well as those of earthy red cherry liqueur and spice nuances. Here too there is terrific concentration to the intense, palate staining and perceptively muscular flavors that again coat the mouth with dry extract while offering a superbly persistent finish that is blatantly structured but not particularly austere; indeed this could even be approached young. Drink 2034+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound
Healthy dark red with ruby tones. Black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a violet topnote. Tight and minty on entry, then a bit more pliant in the middle, conveying an impression of medicinal reserve to its dark flavors of black cherry, spices and minerals. Finishes with substantial tooth- and tongue-dusting tannins. This wine also had a late malo and comes off as very backward today, in need of more élevage to gain in flesh and sweetness.
