2022 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Beaune-Greves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$480. 00Bottle$5760.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Bouchard Père et Fils is one of the most respected names in Burgundy, yet despite their renown, it seems the market has not yet fully appreciated just how good the wines currently being produced are. They are the largest owner of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy, this includes prized plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Chambertin, Bonnes Mares, and Meursault Perrieres.
Founded in 1731, the subsequent nine generations of the Bouchard family has amassed an impressive 130ha of vineyards, including nearly 100 separate climats. It's perhaps this large size, contrasting the current trend for tiny producers with a cult following that has meant Bouchard are not front and centre in the minds of many Burgundy drinkers. A true shame as Bouchard are making some of the best wines in their history.

A slightly riper but brooding nose only grudgingly reveals it aromas of dark berries, earth and a whiff of leather. The noticeably denser medium-bodied flavors are at once caressing but powerful with both mouthcoating sap and tannins on the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. This excellent effort also always needs time in bottle and 2022 will again be no different. Drink through 2034+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, spices, violets and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, broad and enveloping, with a fleshy attack that segues into a refined, mineral palate and a saline finish, it's a benchmark for the appellation.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a clean and fresh nose of maraschino cherries, candied orange peel and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and gentle grip, slightly powdery in texture. The attractive, mocha-tinged finish lingers in the mouth. This will drink very well after 5-7 years. Drink 2026-2046.

Neal Martin - VinousMore crimson than purple, with notably more presence than the other Beaunes. A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity. Drink from 2030-2038.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe 2022 Baby Jesus is a wine of gorgeous intensity, with alluringly ripe aromas of blackberry and plum with notes of peony and spice. The forward fruits continue on the palate as intensely sweet and silky, with a density and grip that are only apparent with time. The grapes are from nearly four hectares of vines, although only the oldest vines and most concentrated fruit are used for this bottling, with some declassified into Beaune du Château. This wine will open in five to seven years and should easily drink for 30 more after the harvest. Drink 2027-2055.

Here too there is a liqueur-like quality to the black cherry aromas that are nuanced by floral and spice hints. The caressing yet intense and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract that carry over to the dusty, moderately austere and affirmatively built-to-age finish. This is one exceptionally classy wine, indeed the mouthfeel is pure silk. Buy it. Drink through 2034+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Volnay Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1er Cru has a nicely detailed bouquet with black cherries, raspberry coulis, wild mint and a touch of dark chocolate emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest weight, very nicely balanced with a smooth, coca-tinged finish. It will need 4-5 years to absorb the 30% new oak. Drink 2025-2038.
90-92 points
Neal Martin - VinousA small yield in 2022, making it hard to judge the picking date. A rich deep purple in the centre. The oak adds a sheen to the nose. There is vigour to this albeit with a slightly riper fruit profile, but the structure is balanced very well by a fresher limestone feel. Drink from 2029-2036.
91-93 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe parcel of Volnay Caillerets was the first Pinot picked in 2022 due to the thin soils and superficial nature of the limestone. The wine has an alluring aroma of blackberry and mulberry fruit with hints of boxwood, bay leaf, and peonies. The texture is supple and velvety, with rewarding concentration and density. The team at Bouchard sorts rigorously for 'figuée', grapes shrivelled by sunburn; technical director Frédéric Weber says success depends on 'keeping it crunchy'. This wine should open soon after release and is suited to mid-term cellaring, although a 1962 from this vineyard tasted this year was still fresh. Drink 2025-2050.

Dark red in colour with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Pretty scents of violet, sour to red cherry and rhubarb emanate from the glass with some vanillin cedar, meaty characters, earth and subtle stalky dried herb notes also evident. Light in body and supple in its feel the palate features savoury red to dark cherry and rhubarb flavours over earth, vanillin cedar, dried herbs and spice. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2021 Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru was badly affected by the frost, cropped at 6-7hL/ha, due to it being located on a steep slope. Enough wood to notice surrounds the equally ripe aromas of mocha, black raspberry and spicy poached plum. Allen Meadows - BurghoundIf the Cuvée Carnot tends to take center stage chez Bouchard, it's the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds that's the Volnay to beat to my palate this year. Exhibiting aromas of cherries, raspberries, loamy soil, black truffle and raw cocoa, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and elegantly muscular, with terrific depth and mid-palate amplitude, concluding with a long, mineral finish.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lovely spicy bouquet with clove and white pepper scents infusing the dark berry fruit. Very ripe liqueur-like aromas of various black berries are nuanced by plenty of spice and floral elements. There is excellent underlying tension to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that also brim with sappy dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a bitter pit fruit finale that offers impressive persistence. This is definitely atypical but the intrinsic class of a fine Caillerets is still present. Drink from 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundCropped at a derisory 15 hectoliters per hectare, the quality of Bouchard's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot is some compensation for the lack of quantity. It seems to firm up in the glass, implying it will require some bottle age. Drink 2026-2040.

Neal Martin - VinousUpfront floral and licorice aromas, but it needs some aeration for the red berries to emerge. A rich and fleshy wine for this appellation that’s associated with silky elegance. Crisp tannins and lively acidity keep this bright. Needs some time to settle down and open up. From a 3.76-hectare plot in this well known 1er Cru. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

2020 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Le Corton Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Ripe aromas of red and dark currant, earth and a hint of the sauvage give way to dense, powerful and quite serious broad-shouldered flavors that terminate in an austere but not really rustic finale that flashes excellent minerality and length. This muscular and very much built-to-age effort will need at least a decade of cellaring to unwind. Drink from 2035+.
91-94 points
Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Le Corton Grand Cru is a worthy successor to the striking 2019 (which I probably underrated last year). Soaring from the glass with aromas of rose petals, orange rind, raspberries, rich soil tones and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with a deep and layered core of fruit, vibrant acids and fine, melting tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish. This emblematic cuvée has always been a solid bottling chez Bouchard, but in the last few years it seems to have attained a whole new level of quality. When I asked Frédéric Weber what might account for this shift, he explained that he picks later and includes more whole bunches in the vinification. Whatever the reason, readers are advised to take note, as I don't think the market has yet factored in quite how good this wine is.

Neal Martin - VinousThere's nothing shy about this uncompromising expression of the 2020 vintage. Dark, meaty and peppery on the expansive nose, this Corton has imposing structure, but has been beautifully crafted. So well proportioned, in spite of its mighty stature. The crushed-stone minerality builds and builds to a serious crescendo at the finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe Bouchard 2020 Corton has coped well with the drought. Vinification included 40% whole bunches, slightly higher than the other Côte de Beaune vineyards. Deepish colour with a more crimson edge. The stems show with a slightly smoky nose. A brooding powerhouse but it is also light on its feet with an interesting complex mix of red and black fruit, plus the more open structure from whole bunch.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis magnificent parcel is 3.55ha in a long strip below the wood of Corton and above Clos du Roi and Renards, right on the limestone. The grapes are one-third fermented as whole clusters and then aged in 25% new casks to produce a very aromatic nose with expressive red and black fruits, floral notes, pepper and spice. Moderately generous wood and menthol fight somewhat with the exuberantly spicy black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with lovely floral wisps. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it's a terrific wine in the making.
94-96 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from purchased grapes that Bouchard harvest themselves. It has a fresh black cherry and boysenberry jam scented bouquet, just a touch of warm alcohol here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite dense and lightly spiced. It feels quite muscular towards the finish where I would like to see more light amongst the shade. A bit dense and brawny. Drink 2026-2045.
91-93 points
Neal Martin - VinousDeep, dark and smoky nose that's still quite closed. Gigantic structure and fantastic cherry fruit on the rich and deeply harmonious palate. Still very youthful, but this gives you the full Gevrey Grand Cru experience, with all the earthy power, spicy complexity and a touch of bitter chocolate. Expansive and creamy finish with very impressive, plush tannins. This was made from bought-in grapes from an almost 1-hectare plot in this cult site. Drink or hold.
96 points
Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comPurchased grapes, but from the same plot each year and Bouchard can choose when to harvest, which was 29th August in 2020. Dark colour, 30% whole bunch, a suave intensity of fruit, very backward, not overdone, with a little coconut sweetness alongside the dark raspberry. It is a little too massive to display its quintessential elegance yet, but I think that lies beneath and will come out after racking. There may yet be more of an up-side to my conservative score.
92-96 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyProduced with fruit purchased from the same parcel each year, which is located at the top of the slope just under the tree line. In 2020, the grapes were picked on 29th August and were treated to the customary vinification: half whole clusters, very gentle pump-overs, and ultimately two winters in cask, half new. The result is lighter than this producer's Chambertin, with a bright raspberry and red cherry fruit aromas tinged with floral notes. There is plenty of finesse, although it is lacking perhaps a bit of the density one expects in this appellation. Drink 2025 - 2050.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)This is also wonderfully fresh and bright with its array of relatively deeply pitched aromas of cassis, black raspberry and a hint of smoked meat character. The rich and quite generously proportioned medium weight flavors don't possess the same driving minerality but do offer even better power on the chalky and youthfully austere finish that could also use better depth so a few years of keeping should prove beneficial. Drink through 2030+.

2022 Domaine Charles Audoin Marsannay La Charme Aux PretresBurgundy, FRANCE$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 13%Closure: CorkLight on it’s feet, fresh and refined with expansive red to dark fruits.
Domaine Charles Audoin was formed in 1972 by Charles and his oenologist wife Marie-Francoise, starting with three hectares in Marsannay. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Their son Cyril joined his father in 2000, and is now in charge of both vineyard and winemaking activities for the Domaine. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.La Charme aux Pretres is situated in middle of the Marsannay sector, and soils here are a reddish brown gravel over a bed of limestone. This high limestone content tends to produce an open knit wine with great structure and impressive ageing potential.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red to dark red hue. Captivating the olfactory senses are perfumed like aromas of violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry which are complimented by hints of anise, earthy forest floor, spicy cedar and fresh herbs. Light on it’s feet, delicious red to dark cherry, strawberry, rhubarb and subtle anise flavours flow across the palate with a feeling that’s both refined and supple. Spicy vanillin cedar, earthy forest floor, delicate bramble and dried herb accents lend further interest. Showing ample freshness and polished tannins, it finishes expansive, savoury and spicy.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

The 2022 Marsannay La Charme aux Prêtres unwinds in the glass with notes of cherries, cassis, mint and dried flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep, dense and fleshy, concluding with a saline finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)Ripe and agreeably fresh aromas of black cherry, poached plum and a whiff of the sauvage lead to racy, intense and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors that conclude in a dusty, youthfully austere and impressively persistent finale. The upper part of the vineyard has large amounts of limestone just below the surface, while the lower section has more red marl. Les Longeroies is one of the prime candidates to be promoted to premier cru status, and the wines from here are incredibly refined, yet also serious and well structured.
Showing plenty of depth is a dark red core that has black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Alluring scents of violets, red cherries and wild strawberries captivate the olfactory senses with whiffs of red liquorice, fresh herbs, forest floor and spicy cedar also evident. Long and beautifully refined across the palate with a beam of fresh acidity underpinning delicious red to dark cherry, a dash of sour cherry, strawberry and red liquorice fruits. Clos du Roy is the northern most lieu-dit of Marsannay, and the relatively steep south-east facing vineyard sits above the town of Chenove. Marsannay has long had a reputation for fine rosé production, yet since the upgrade to appellation status in 1987 and the shift in focus to white and red wines from the commune, rosé output has dropped significantly. Thankfully Cyril Audoin is one of the few that has kept up this tradition, and his is one of leading examples on the market today.

Certified organic the average age of the vines is over 50 years old. These Grenache based wines follow traditional winemaking techniques with no de-stemming and all aging takes place in cement takes. Charvin’s Côtes du Rhône is regularly rated as one of the very best from this area and perhaps it is not surprising as the vines for this cuvee border directly on to the appellation for Chateauneuf du Pape in the northern sector where they are located.

It's fermented and then aged for 21 months in concrete using indigenous yeasts, then bottled unfiltered. Drink: 2025-2032.

2019 Domaine Chaume-Arnaud Vinsobres RougeVinsobres, Southern Rhone, FRANCE$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 3 Years (2024-2027)ABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkValerie Chaume started Chaume-Arnaud when she was just 23 years old, renting 4.5 hectares of vineyards from her family. With her husband Philippe joining her in 1989, they expanded the cellar. Situated in the northern part of Cotes du Rhone villages, Vinsobres is one of the most northerly Crus in the Southern Rhone and sits at a high altitude of 400 to 450 meters, higher even than the highest vineyard in Gigondas.
The 2019 Vinsobres is made up of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and 10% Mourvèdre. The fruit is mainly sourced from the high plateau and south-facing stony, limestone clay soil. Hand-picked fruit is de-stemmed, crushed, and fermented using only natural yeasts, with gentle elevage for three weeks after which it is matured in concrete tanks.
Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Elevated black raspberry and liquorice aromas mix with scorched earth, dried herb and peppered meat notes. Rich black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits have a ripe chewy feel with scorched earth, dried meat and pepper characters lying underneath. Muscular tannin structure with a touch grippy yet long blackpepper infused finish that shows good freshness.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

A glorious nose - cherry blossom, raspberry and redcurrant coulis - I could smell this all day. Intense but not heavy with a great sense of purity, bright fruity acidity and very fine tannin. This has such charm and character, it's drinkable, focussed and precise with a little sappy, balsamic herbal note that brings it all together. Great value for money. Pebbly clay limestone slope, grown at 250 to 420m altitude. Hand-harvested, destemmed, indigenous yeasts, fermented then matured for 20 months in concrete. 15% Cinsault in the blend gives great aromatic freshness and fluidity on the palate. Drink 2021 – 2024.

Made from 100% Syrah and from a terrific terroir in the northern part of the appellation, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Côte Rozier will spend a full 26 months in 50% new French oak. It offers a more complex, nuanced vibe, with lots of black raspberries, spice, new leather, and dried flower aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, with a great mid-palate, integrated oak, and a seamless texture, it's another brilliant wine from this estate.

Jeb DunnuckFull-bodied and concentrated with dark, brooding fruit, but crucially there's freshness here. Clarity of texture, some saline, grippy, lightly serrated tannins. It finishes long, with a saline, sappy grip. This has some serious character and muscle. Robust oaking, but it will swallow it in time to yield a highly impressive wine. 45-year-old vines on average (some up to 60-years-old), 30% whole bunch, fermented in stainless steel. Matured in 300l French oak barrels - 50% of which are new - for 26 months. Malolactic fermentation in barrel. Drinking Window 2026 - 2032.

The 2018 Le Clos is a blend of 15 plots despite being called Le Clos. It's a sweet, warm-fruited, fragrant style, with a sense of ripe fruit blossoming in the mouth. While it's relatively full, smooth and round, it doesn't become heavy. Vanillin, savory, olive tapenade and smoky bacon emerge in the glass. The 2018 is a touch drying on the finish with a clove/sticking plaster note, which gives a bit of a concern for the microbiology of this wine. To be released early 2024. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2018 Les Poyeux offers up a rich, sweet, black-fruited style, which may be more of a reflection of the vintage than the site. It's a lengthy expression, with ripe plum, black cherry a dash of black olive and vanillin signatures of oak maturation. While Les Poyeux tends to be an elegant, delicate style, this is a mouthful, with lots of structure and a long-scented tea-leaf and plum-like finish. While this will be released in early 2024, I would suggest waiting for another two to three years before approaching. Drink 2025-2038.

Rebecca Gibb MW - VinousSubtle minerality on the nose, and like Le Clos this is showing roasted meat characters segueing into animal, but fainter than Le Clos. The palate has an even greater sense of purity and clarity of Cabernet Franc expression, with some hints of tobacco coming out in the glass followed by a sense of chocolate to the texture. There’s a greater sense of fine tannins in the background, partly due to oak (one-year-old barriques as opposed to old barriques used for Le Clos). It's less approachable than Le Clos and will need longer to express itself. Drink 2028 - 2040.

The 2018 Le Bourg is a mouth-filling, full expression that's robust and powerful, offering up rich flavors of smoked bacon, tapenade and mint. This is not a wine for opening any time soon; it has chunky tannins and a sense of dryness, alongside herbs and Elastoplast which suggest there may be some Brett here. This is quite lengthy and would be designed for the long-haul if there were no microbiological activity going on. Drink 2026-2040.

The 2015 Saumur Champigny Le Bourg is coolish and fresh on the toasty nose. Generous, intense and salty on the palate, with fine tannins and lots of cherry aromas, this is a ripe, round and juicy Champigny with firm tannins that were still a bit dry when I tasted this wine (summer 2018) and needed some time to fully integrate. The 2017 Le Bourg exemplifies the site's characteristic power and structure. This is not a wine that you should buy to drink now. This Cabernet Franc is almost beast-like compared with Les Poyeux, which is relatively accessible and graceful. It has rounded shoulders and finely woven yet structured tannins, which could be attributed to the clay topsoil of the Le Bourg site. It's a heady expression that displays the smoky bacon notes that can be found when it's a baby wine in barrel. It also offers mocha notes, and a heady perfume that lingers in the air as if you're in an Indian garden, followed with bergamot and tea leaf. This is a wine that moves with power and direction. Due for release - on allocation - to those lucky enough to be on the buying list for Clos Rougeard. Drink 2025-2050.

The 2017 Les Poyeux is a silken, elegant wine that's just starting to turn away from its primary fruits and develop some mellow tertiary characters. Very smooth in texture, an abundance of fine, powdery tannins coats the mouth. The 2017 is long, fragrant and sophisticated, with black fruit, woody herbs, Christmas spices and the merest whiff of nectarine, which I commonly find in Les Poyeux, year in, year out. Excellent. Drink 2026-2045.

Rebecca Gibb MW - VinousThe nose is more restrained than Le Clos 2017 or Les Poyeux 2018. There's a small touch of minerality in the background, and a mineral edge to the finish. This really needs time but should soften to great elegance over some years. Drink 2032-2047.

There's a gorgeous nectarine-like character that runs through Les Poyeux when young and the 2016 is no different. It's silky and seductive in a non-opulent way. Finesse is a word that crops up repeatedly when I tasted this wine: finesse of fragrance - this is delightfully perfumed, pure and precise; finesse of tannins with their fine chalky texture. It is long, scented and charming, thus it could be approached now if you wished but it has a medium to long life ahead. Drink 2022-2036.

The 2016 Le Bourg is a typically fragrant, heady and savory expression with smoky bacon characters meeting the red fruit. The clay portion of the clay-limestone soils in the vineyard tends to give a roundness to Le Bourg. There's also an innate sense of power within its mellow frame. There's a generosity here but it never becomes opulent nor heavy - this is Saumur-Champigny, after all, and it specialises in lightness. The tannins provide a relaxed, powdery veil for the mouth which suggests you could approach it now but if you're not on death's door and can wait, this has the componentry to go the long haul. The 2015 reds from these two brothers are some of the gems in the vintage. The 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is another sensational wine. At the heart of their holdings is the legendary Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux, a walled monopole vineyard that has become synonymous with the domaine itself.
What sets Clos des Epeneaux apart is its remarkable ability to balance Pommard's natural power with a sense of elegance and finesse. The vineyard's old vines, some over 80 years of age, yield wines of depth and complexity, yet with a vibrancy that makes them captivating even in their youth. With age, these wines evolve beautifully, revealing layers of dark fruit, earth, and subtle spice.

Discreet but not invisible wood influence can be found on the ripe aromas of various dark berries, prominent earth and violet scents. Somewhat surprisingly in the context of the reported yields, the mid-palate is not especially dense though I very much like the beguiling texture that is at once caressing yet powerful before culminating in a precise, serious and equally austere if notably longer finale. This is an opulent and refined Clos des Epeneaux. Drink through 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was a blend of two instead of four cuvées this year due to the depleted production. It has a precocious bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, menthol and blood orange scents that gather momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with hints of allspice and tangy quince. It displays fine composure towards the finish with impressive length. This is a superb Clos des Epeneaux, though will it surpass the 2019? I’m not sure. Drink 2026-2050.

Neal Martin - VinousI tasted first the cuvée from young vines, which did get rather overtaken by the summer conditions, and then the old vines which showed as a brighter wine, in sharper definition. What matters, of course, is the blend. This shows as having a deep dense purple colour, while the bouquet is almost stunned into submission by the power of the wine. There is a huge wealth of dark fruit, as black as it is red. Supercharged on the palate but finishes with a little crunch as good acidity plays alongside the tannins. The Clos des Epeneaux 2020 is still an atypically massive wine but this could well emerge as a quality player with time.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThe final blend of this is superb, including both the energy of the young vines and the density of the old. A very ripe nose is comprised by notes of both red and dark currant along with a background hint of a kind of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. There is fine freshness and verve to the moderately dense, powerful, and muscular larger-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract before concluding in a dusty, austere, and firm finale. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). Neal Martin - VinousThe colour has evolved more than the 2018. Interesting complex nose, a mix of the warmer pinot style, riper and more supple than the 2018, you could almost consider drinking this until you come to the end of the palate where the density builds. A light menthol touch with some cinnamon. Enough acidity at the back, tannins hidden by the fruit, almost saline at the finish. Ultimately more character than the ’18 though with a slightly riper fruit profile.

This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. Antonio Galloni - Wine Advocate (Apr 2012)From magnum. The colour is balanced, maybe less intense than their Auxey 1er cru (often the case).
