Southern Rhone

Considered one of the bargain categories in European wine, the wave of enthusiasm for Cotes du Rhone styles continues to grow. This vast region offers delicious Grenache-based reds, often blended with Cinsault, Shiraz & Mourvedre that are densely coloured, fleshy, supple and flavourful. Entry level wines make for delightful early drinking, while the very best examples can be exceptionally long-lived. Focusing on small grower-producers, Nicks Wine Merchants directly import some tremendous values from Rasteau, Cairanne, Valreas, Gigondas, Lirac and Chateauneuf du Pape, amongst others. Rhone Rose and dry white wines are also frequently stocked.

Rasteau's 880 hectares of vines are planted on marl and red and yellow clay soils over sandstone with rounded stones covering some sectors, which in heatwave vintages act like health insurance against hydric stress. By law, the Grenache component in the dry red blends must be 50% minimum, with Syrah and/or Mourvedre 20% minimum and other grape varieties of the appellation tolerated up to 20%. In 2010 the Rasteau AOC was created allowing the wines to be named after the village, dropping the Cotes-du-Rhone tag and joining the likes of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas at the pinnacle of the wine hierarchy in the Southern Rhone.

    A Rich Blockbuster Rasteau.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah sourced from vines over 60 years old and 40 years old respectively. The Syrah component is aged in old 225 litre barrels whilst the Grenache is aged in concrete vats for a period of 15 months.
Deep dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Elevated black raspberry and liquorice aromas infused with pepper are trailed by black cherry, scorched earth, dried herb and graphite notes. Rich and power packed, the palate is engulfed with succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which sit atop a scorched earth, subtle graphite, dried meat and peppered herb back drop. Robust yet opulent feel with a muscular tannin structure that is nonetheless well integrated. Outstanding torque with a long pepper laced pedal to the metal finish.

This gorgeous 100% Grenache opens with a deep dark red black tinged colour and dark red hue. Wafting out of the glass are heady scents of black raspberries, liquorice and black cherries which are interwoven with dried meat, scorched earth and peppered herb notes. Concentrated and powerful, waves of rich, super succulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits swamp every corner of the mouth. Infusions of provincial herbs, scorched earth, incense like characters and peppered meats lie underneath. Ripe chewy tannins lend some muscle to what is otherwise a lavish feel. Concludes very long and seductive.

All Grenache from very old vines and the clay soils of the Les Fouquesses lieu-dit, the 2020 Rasteau Héritage 1924 reveals a vivid purple/ruby hue to go with perfumed aromatics of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, and flowery incense. It's medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and has a seamless mouthfeel. Raised all in concrete tank, this naked expression of Grenache is going to drink beautifully for a decade. Drink 2023-2033.

Magnificent depth of colour featuring a pitch black heart and a very deep black dark red hue. Enticing blackpepper, black cherry and subtle liquorice aromas morph into graphite, smoked meats and spicy dried herb notes. Rich, refined and powerful, the palate is flooded with black cherry, liquorice, black raspberry and blackberry fruits. Notions of dried meats, provincial herbs, subtle scorched earth and blackpepper also chime in on the back half. Ample freshness with polished yet muscular tannins. Also terrific, the 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Villages Roaix Les Hautes Granges checks in as 100% Syrah from the limestone soils of the Les Hautes Granges lieu-dit. It was destemmed and aged in 15% new barrels. Blackberries, ground pepper, violets, and a kiss of Northern Rhône gaminess all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a rich, layered mouthfeel, some background oak, and a great finish. It has another 7-8 years, probably a decade, of life ahead of it. Drink 2022-2032.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. The nose is charged with black raspberry and liquorice aromas which are laced with fresh herb and white pepper. Hints of graphite and spicy black olive also chime in. The rich, concentrated palate is full in body but far from over the top. Lots of kirsch, blackberry, leather, and garrigue notes emerge from the 2019 Rasteau Heritage 1924, a 100% Grenache release that was all destemmed and brought up in concrete, seeing no wood whatsoever. This medium to full-bodied, silky, elegant, lightly textured beauty has terrific purity, light tannins, and outstanding length. It’s more elegant and seamless than some of the previous vintages, which brought a touch more power and opulence, but I suspect it will gain richness with another year in bottle and drink nicely for 5-7 years. Renown Rhone critic Jeb Dunnuck is enthusiast about the 2019 Southern Rhone vintage, summing it up as follows:-

…these are inkier colored, concentrated, full-bodied wines that stay surprisingly focused and lively on the palate. Despite the hot growing season, the wines hold onto impressive aromatics, with clean, pure fruit aromas and little in the way of over-ripeness. Tannins across the board appear to be ripe, the wines have plenty of mid-palate depth, as well as length, and I found few signs of over the top wines. Quality throughout the Southern Rhône Valley also appears to be high.
…. in short, 2019 appears to be a beautiful, possibly exceptional, vintage for the Southern Rhône….

Domaine des Escaravailles Le Ventabren is typically a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Carignan that is aged in concrete vats for 9 months. The Grenache and Carignan vines are 60 years old whilst the Syrah comes from 30 year old vines.
Inky black heart with a deep dark red hue. Powerful black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry scents intoxicate the nostrils followed by some scorched earth, provincial herb and peppered dried meat notes. Rich pepper infused black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice fruits are layered across the palate with plenty of intensity and weight. Ripe chewy tannins give the back half a muscular feel with some scorched earth, dried meat and herbs du Provence characters lying underneath. The long finish is both generous and robust.

A stunning Rasteau – rich, structured and peppery with a seemingly never ending finish.

Totally opaque black dark red core with a bright dark red purple hue. Peppered aromatics of ripe dark raspberries and liquorice are followed by some dried meats with more spice and pepper aspects as end notes. Medium to full bodied, rich and powerful with delicious juicy dark to black raspberry and liquorice flavours infused with blackpepper completely filling the mouth over a meaty crushed rock back drop. The spice and pepper carrying right through to the very long finish. The quality of 2012 in the Southern Rhone has been confirmed beyond doubt. While volumes were down by up to 15% on 2011, the resulting wines show beautifully balanced fruit/acid/tannin profiles and generally moderate alcohols. Stylistically, comparisons are being made with the classic 2007 - more “Audrey Hepburn rather than Marilyn Monroe” as one commentator has described it. A vintage that's delighted vignerons, more importantly, it offers a bevy of bargains to consumers that will continue to reward for years to come.

In great vintages, this Domaine's 1924 old-vine, pure Grenache has earnt a reputation for rivalling the best of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. Near opaque dark purple red colour with black tinged edges and a purple crimson hue. Aromas of black raspberries and black cherries develop with hints of liquorice, pepper and hints of meatiness. Boasts a rich, succulently textured flavour profile of black raspberries, black cherries and liquorice with some underlying meaty characteristics repeating in the peppery finish. Solid, fine grained tannins provide grip and structure. Long black raspberry, liquorice and black pepper aftertaste. Really enjoyable now, but plenty of development ahead, this will only get better and better.

One of my favorite producers, Domaine des Escaravailles covers 160 acres and is run by the talented proprietor Gilles Ferran, with consulting advice from Philippe Cambie. The wines are always well-made, have ample fruit and texture, and can represent incredible values in most vintages.

Also a serious, very high-quality effort, the single vineyard 2012 Rasteau Heritage 1924 is 100% Grenache (from vines planted in 1924) that was brought up in tank. Sporting a full-bodied, voluptuous and decadently textured profile, with massive mid-palate depth, this thrilling old vine cuvee stays beautifully focused and pure, with nothing out of place. Black cherry, blackberry, spice, licorice and big minerality are just some of the nuances here, and this beauty will drink well on release and over the following 7-8 years, if not longer.

Combining the freshness and richness of the outstanding 2015 vintage this generously flavoured entry level Cotes du Rhone is a total no brainer at this price.

Displays excellent depth of colour for an entry level Cotes du Rhone. Very deep dark purple black core with a bright purple crimson hue. Quite perfumed the nose displays freshly crushed dark raspberry and dark cherry aromatics overlaid by incense with following faint scorched earth and spice notes. Juicy dark raspberry and subtle liquorice flavours meld into some inky earth like characters with subtle incense infusions and a good dose of spice also present. Despite the light to medium body weight there’s ample richness and it’s surprisingly concentrated for its price. Good fresh acidity combines with slightly dryish but fine grained tannins. A blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Totally opaque dark purple black colour with a bright dark purple red hue. Elevated scents of black raspberries, liquorice and black cherries gently laced with fresh herbs are trailed by some meaty notes and peppered earth. Mid weight and totally delicious, rich black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry flavours infused with incense fill the mouth. Elements of smoky earth and dried meats also chime in with a burst of spicy pepper on the fresh finish. Juicy mouthfeel with slightly chewy but ripe tannins. Long pepper infused aftertaste of black raspberries, liquorice, black cherries, scorched earth, some meatiness and spice. A terrific Cotes du Rhone that delivers killer value.

A terrific value (at least in Europe, where I could actually find it), the 2016 Cotes du Rhone les Antimagnes is a 70-30 blend of Grenache and Syrah that sees no oak. It combines tarry notes, black olives and black cherries with a supple, full-bodied feel in the mouth and a long, plush, velvety finish. It's a no-brainer for drinking over the next few years. Drink 2018-2022.

Jean-Louis Ferran's grandson Gilles assumed control of this top notch Domaine in 1999 after working alongside his father for several vintages. Gilles works closely with his good friend and ubiquitous Southern Rhone consultant, Philippe Cambie. A 100% Syrah, the Haut Granges stands out from the outset with a magnificent colour - midnight black purple with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. The nose features liquorice and smoky clove over some black cherry, meat and spice notes. Full bodied and richly concentrated with explosive flavours of black cherries and liquorice overlaid by subtle clove; smoked meats in the background with nuances of black pepper present on the finish. Firm tannin structure provides the necessary support for this concentrated effort. Superb length with a long persistent aftertaste of black cherries, liquorice, smoked meats and spicy pepper. A richly textured Rhone delight that will cellar 6-8 years.

A blend of all Syrah, the 2012 Roaix Hautes Granges shows that high-quality Syrah can come from the south. Cassis, blackcurrant, pepper, smoke and chocolaty oak all come together here, and this full-bodied, deep and rich 2012 stays remarkably fresh, lively and pure. It will evolve gracefully for a decade.

Part of the success of Domaines Des Escaravailles is due to the input of French oenologist, Philippe Cambie. As well as acting as a consultant winemaker for other Southern Rhone estates like Domaine Grand Nicolet, Cambie also consults to many of the top wines in Chateauneuf du Pape, including Pegau and Vieux Donjon.

A blockbuster Rasteau from the Spectacular 2016 vintage

Totally opaque black dark red core with a bright dark red hue. Intense ripe black cherry and liquorice scents marry into black raspberry and scorched earth elements with dried meats and lots of pepper and spice also present. Exploding across the palate are rich, full bodied black raspberry, ripe black cherry and liquorice flavours all infused with blackpepper. Sitting underneath are complexing nuances of dried meats, scorched earth and spice. Opulent and inviting yet slightly grippy with ripe chewy tannins providing good definition. Beautifully balanced with magnificent power and a long driving finish of blackpepper, black cherries, black raspberries, liquorice, smoky earth and spicy dried meats. Going by the 2007 Domaine des Escaravailles La Ponce Rasteau (another great vintage) which is still going strong, the 2016 vintage should comfortably cellar for up to 10 years…. One of the finest wines to date from this estate as well as from the appellation, the 2016 Rasteau La Ponce shows the exuberance and depth of the vintage, yet also has thrilling purity of fruit and perfect balance. Revealing a deep purple color as well as classic notes of blackberries, crushed rocks, graphite, and violets, it offers a full-bodied, ultra-pure, polished style on the palate that gains depth, richness and length with time in the glass. It’s a great, great Rasteau that readers should snatch up.

My favorite of the scarab beetle wines (that's the translation of Escaravailles) was the 2016 Rasteau la Ponce, a blend of Grenache (aged in concrete) and Syrah (aged in wood). Dried spices, cherries, and blueberries swirl together in outrageous harmony in this full-bodied, creamy-textured beauty that doesn't lack for richness or vibrancy. It should drink well for at least another 5-7 years. Drink 2018-2025.

Opaque black dark purple colour with a dark purple red hue. Pronounced aromas of black cherries, cloves, scorched earth, subtle incense and blackpepper. The palate has decidedly more weight and richness than the entry level Cotes du Rhones from 2012 featuring flavours of black raspberries, liquorice, spicy dried meats and cloves with a peppery overlay. Relatively elegant and structured for a La Ponce it finishes with solid, moderately chewy tannins. Long peppery black raspberry, liquorice, clove and dried meats aftertaste.

Totally opaque dark red black colour with a dark red hue. Pronounced black raspberry and dark cherry aromas meet up with liquorice, infusions of fresh herbs, light incense and spicy pepper notes. Incredibly powerful and boasting more than an ample level of richness yet remaining remarkably fresh, the medium to full bodied palate is flooded with spicy black raspberry, liquorice and ripe cherry fruits. The 2017 Rasteau la Ponce is an 80-20 blend of Grenache and Syrah, with the Syrah aged in oak. The result offers notes of blackberries and black cherries on the nose, plenty of weight and a creamy texture on the palate, and a long, lush finish. It's wonderfully ripe, without going over the top. Tasted twice (once blind), with generally consistent notes, although one bottle showed more chocolate-espresso notes and finished slightly harder than the other. Drink 2019-2025.

Much like the practices used at Rayas, the vineyards are organic and manually ploughed, and harvest is normally late in the season relative to other producers. Much of the focus is on old vine Grenache, with the Vacqueyras a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. For the Cotes du Rhone the blend is 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Cinsault, while they also produce a Vin de Pays du Vaucluse under the Domaine des Tours label which is mostly Grenache with Cinsault, Counoise, Dious, Merlot, and Syrah.

To commemorate the birth of her first grandchild, Laurence Feraud set aside three barriques to create the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Ella. The equivalent of two will be sold, with the rest remaining at the domaine. Intense cherries form the core of this wine, with subtle accents of suede, loam and caramel. Full-bodied and hugely concentrated, it comes across as just slightly more rounded than the Cuvée da Capo, with a seductive, velvety mouthfeel and a long, lingering finish. Drink 2025-2040.

Deep and muscular, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Ella is named after Laurence Férauds first grand-daughter Ella. It is a selection of three out of eleven barriques that were destined for the Cuvée Da Capo from the same vintage. The bottles are sealed with a pink wax capsule and Féraud tells me that the label will be equally playful. Checking in at 16.1% alcohol and made of 85% Grenache along with other permitted varieties, this wine is towering. It soars from the glass with pristine aromas of crushed violets, ripe raspberry and forest strawberry, blackcurrant, licorice, smoked herbs, figs, lavender, incense and white pepper. Full-bodied, layered and finishing remarkably long, it is the ultimate trophy wine for deep-pocketed collectors. Only 900 bottles produced. Drink 2028-2050.

A very perfumed nose of wild berries, black pepper, violets, thyme, nutmeg, bark and hints of spiced chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins. It is suave and very harmonious. Such a beautiful touch on the palate with silky yet intense volume. There is tension here with a bright core of juicy fruits, vibrant spices and minerality. Vitality with an etherealness, with a very long, funnelled finish that goes on and on with some cocoa powder texture to it. Best after 2025.

Grapes for Domaine du Pegau Cuvee da Capo come from the oldest on the property, most over 100 years of age. The blend today is approximately 70% Grenache, along with Syrah and Mourvedre, with the remainder from the various other red grapes that are allowed to be planted in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. As a tiny 500 case per year production, Cuvee da Capo is one of the most expensive and in demand wines in the entire Rhone appellation.

Two thousand twenty marks the eighth time that Laurence Féraud has chosen to vinify a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which made its debut in the 1998 vintage. A vineyard selection from parcels in La Crau, Escondudes and Monpertuis, all harvested a little bit later than the grapes destined to go into the Cuvée Réservée, this year’s blend is 70% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre and the rest split among other permitted varieties. Aged in foudre for two years and achieving 15.8% alcohol, it soars from the glass with expressive aromas of dried rose petals, slightly cooked red and black fruits, licorice, dried herbs, tobacco, cured meat and white pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and built like a brick wall, it will reward bottle age.

A complex nose of dark cherries, damson plums, dried spices, dried thyme, leather, some bark and undergrowth as well. Full body with great volume. Structured and balanced with a creamy core of berries and hints of dark chocolate. Fine texture with plenty of spicy character on the palate. It’s complex and savory with leather and profound aromas developing towards the finish. Still a bit firm at this stage with a brain-rattling finish that almost knocks you off your chair! Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo is a bigger, richer wine, as well as a more youthful, focused, behemoth of a 2020. Powerful notes of ripe black cherries, darker currants, ground pepper, charcuterie, and flower incense are just some of the notions here, and it's full-bodied, with a concentrated, opulent mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It doesn't match the all-time greats of this estate, but it’s a more approachable, opulent, undeniable sexy, Provençal Da Cape that's impossible not to love.

Full-bodied, rich and still somewhat tannic but approachable, the 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence features hints of mocha and leather layered over dark, plummy fruit, meaty, savory notes and a bit of dried herb. It’s a medium to full-bodied, fresh, focused example of this cuvée that has classic garrigue, ground pepper, violets, and assorted darker fruits. Mature, with smoky tobacco, bay leaf, menthol and savory notes emerging from the core of gently steeped black currant and blackberry fruit. Streaks of charcoal and leather line the finish, adding texture and length. Drink now through 2030.

Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing an average of 24 months in old foudres.

    Rich, chewy and complex.

Dense pitch black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice aromas laced with a mixture of blackpepper and scorched earth sail from the glass. Also evident are complexing notes of dried meat and subtle leather. Rich and full bodied the palate is layered with a powerful core of opulent black cherry and liquorice fruit. Imparting a muscular feel is a robust tannin structure with black raspberry, infusions of herbs du Provence, scorched earth, peppered dried meats and shades of new leather adding plenty of interest on the back half. Concludes very long, rich and rustic with a grippy feel.
Drink over the next 8-10 years.

The 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée looks set to rival the best examples of this bottling. Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it's impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring. Drink 2025-2040.

This youthful Chateauneuf has a very complex nose of graphite, raw meat and lilies. With aeration the black-cherry note steadily grows in intensity. Bold, leathery and earthy palate with fine tannins that build steadily on at the extremely long and straight mineral finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée showed better this go-round than last year and has a complex, more classic style in its garrigue, pepper, sweet spice, and assorted red and black fruits. Nicely textured and medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, it's going to be a classic expression of this cuvée that readers will love.

Even though technology has invaded many wineries in the Rhone, Laurence Feraud and her father Paul, of Domaine Pegau have earned a reputation as 'Traditionalists'. The Cuvee Reservee is an illustration of just this stance. Hand harvest and hand sorting, no destemming and the different varietals of the cuvee co fermented together by indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks without temperature control.

Laurence Feraud's influence on the estate is increasingly palpable, however there is no doubt that Paul stays on as the inspiration for everything that happens in the vineyards and winery. All up, it makes for a winning father and daughter team that Chateauneuf fans can embrace.

In 2003, 2010 and 2016, Domaine Pegau also produced a special cuvee in magnum only, Pegau Inspiration. Produced from a selection of the best barrels from their estate vineyards, Pegau Inspiration also receives a longer aging period in wood. Each magnum of 2016 vintage is numbered from a tiny production of only 300 units, and is an incredible rarity.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Amply powered scents of black raspberry and liquorice are tied to scorched earth, dried herb, leather, spice and peppered meat notes. Striking black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice flavours are delivered with both weight and intensity as they morph into dried meat, scorched earth and peppered Provincial herb elements on the back half. Polished yet ripe and chewy, the tannins provide a sturdy structure. Excellent power, the long rich, black fruited conclusion complexed by earthy leather characters.

Brilliant ruby. Smoky, mineral-tinged aromas of raspberry, cherry preserves, garrigue and exotic spices show excellent clarity and acquire a gamy nuance as the wine opens up. At once rich and energetic in character, offering well-concentrated red berry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors and a sweetening touch of candied lavender. Shows fine definition and finishes gently, spicy and impressively long, with repeating florality and steadily building tannins. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Grown on varied lieux-dits around the appellation on a mix of soils, this was fermented in concrete then aged for 24 months in foudre. All whole bunch, which is evidenced by the pleasantly stemmy aromatics. Very full-bodied and concentrated, savoury despite the oak, with bay leaf and thyme. Very tannic, quite hard on the palate in fact. It's well balanced despite the alcohol, thanks to its concentration and intensity. It's an outlying style due to its darkness, hardness and brooding character. It will be fantastic in time however. But wait. Drinking Window 2026 - 2037.

I loved the 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Laurence, a serious wine from this solid, always charming vintage. Saddle leather, currants, garrigue, pepper, and ample spice notes flow to a full-bodied, opulent, concentrated wine that has terrific mid-palate depth. While it's relatively soft and forward on the attack, it has density as well as tannin. It's going to drink nicely for two decades.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo (the first made since 2003) is a whopper! Slightly less potent alcohol-wise than the 1998 or 2003, Laurence Feraud compares it to the 2000. With just under 16% natural alcohol, it exhibits a dense purple color along with a big, sweet kiss of charcoal, grilled steaks, beef blood, plums, blackberries, smoked herbs, kirsch, and black currants, fabulous concentration, enormous body, and a finish that lasts over a minute. There is a freshness and vibrancy because of the vintage’s crisp acid levels, and the wine should age well for 30+ years. It reminded me more of the 1998 at a similar stage than the 2000, but that’s splitting hairs given the quality level of this offering. Normally there are 500-600 cases produced, most of it being available through the grey market rather than through any authorized importers. Laurence told me the Capo will be bottled in February, 2010.

Other reviews... Comprised of roughly 85% Grenache and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, aged all in foudre, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo is sheer perfection in a glass. Wine doesn’t get any better. Incredibly rich and concentrated, yet ethereal and even graceful, it boasts off-the-hook aromas of blackberry, licorice, spice-box, smoked meats and underbrush that continue to change and develop in the glass. Massive and decadent on the palate, yet again, with no weight and a seamless texture, this brilliant effort needs a handful of years in the cellar and will live to see its 30th birthday in fine form. Drink 2016-2040.

This classic, benchmark estate for traditionally made wines is run by the talented, no-nonsense Laurence Feraud and her father Paul. While I struggle to think of a bad vintage here, 2010 certainly has to rank near the top of the heap and both the Cuvee Reservee and Cuvee da Capo are truly stunning, world-class efforts. 2011 is strong here as well, and should be consumed while you wait on the 2010s to come around. The 2012s are more in the style of the 2010s, with slightly more reserved aromatics, solid purity and beautifully fresh profiles. They too should be more accessible in their youth than the 2010s. A new development for this estate is the roughly 100+ new acres of Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Villages that have been purchased just south of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, roughly 4 miles from the domaine. Formerly called Domaine de la Jouve, it lies just outside the town of Sorgues and borders the Rhone River on its western edge. Now called Chateau Pegau, the wines from here include a white Cotes du Rhone, the Cuvee Lone, a red Cotes du Rhone call Cuvee Maclure and a red Cotes du Rhone Villages called Cuvee Setier. Laurence’s negociant label is call Selection Laurence Feraud and consists of purchased grapes from throughout the Southern Rhone. They always show traditional characters and can represent solid values.

The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée hits the standard assemblage: 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% "others." Still in cask at the time of my visit, it has expressive floral and garrigue notes, plus hints of star anise layered over a base of black cherries. Full-bodied, deep and rich, this looks like a vintage to set aside for a while, with at least 15 years of longevity ahead of it.

Deep shimmering ruby. A highly perfumed nose displays scents of ripe red and dark berries, candied lavender, licorice, smoked meat and white pepper, and a building mineral overtone adds vivacity. Juicy and deeply concentrated yet lively as well, offering alluringly sweet cherry, black raspberry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that spread out and become livelier with aeration. Closes youthfully chewy, sweet and extremely long, with slow-building tannins adding shape and solid grip. There's no Cuvée Da Capo in 2017, incidentally.

It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me a slightly toned down 2009.

This is dark and winey, with a serious core of steeped fig, black currant and blackberry fruit that shows broad shoulders. A second wave of warm paving stone, bay leaf and tar strides in on the finish, resulting in a powerful swath of fruit and earth in the end. A bit of patience is needed here.

Potent ripe black cherry, liquorice, blackberry and black raspberry scents waft through the olfactory senses complexed by elements of scorched earth, hints of new leather, dried herbs and peppered meats. I was also able to taste the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which comes mostly from older vines in the La Crau lieu-dit and spends an additional year in a large foudre. The 2016 vintage was truly magical for the region, and this Cuvée Da Capo is unquestionably one of the finest vintages for this cuvée ever made, in the same league as, if not surpassing, the 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Reminding me of a fresher version of the 2003, the 2016 Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Reservée is another magical wine from Laurence Feraud that could come from nowhere else. I still remember tasting (and loving) this beauty from barrel. It doesn’t quite have the sheer over-the-top decadence of the 2003, but it does have more elegance, while not giving up an inch with regard to texture and opulence. Dark ruby/plum-hued with a monster display of Provençal goodness in its garrigue, lavender, violets, kirsch, plums, and Asian spices, this full-throttle, ripe, sexy Châteauneuf du Pape has silky tannins, flawless balance, and a heavenly texture. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and drink well for at least 20-25 years.

Full bodied the palate is filled with rich black cherry and liquorice flavours with a smoky dried meats overlay followed by some leather and blackpepper on the back palate. Dry finish with a chewy mouthfeel and solid firmish tannin structure all in balance. Long black cherry, liquorice, smoky dried meats, leather and blackpepper aftertaste.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee, which I tasted from several foudres, is essentially equivalent in quality, but it has not yet been bottled. If I understood Paul Feraud correctly, he tends to prefer the 2009, but says Laurence prefers the 2010. In any event, this is one of those “pick’em” dilemmas. The 2010 is a fabulous wine of exceptional intensity, tremendous flavor authority and full-bodied power. It is slightly more reserved than the more flamboyant 2009, but of course it is still in foudre. Very rich with lots of Provencal herb, smoky, meaty, kirsch, black currant and blackberry notes, it is a stunningly viscous, thick and rich effort with a slightly more vibrant finish. This magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape should age for three decades or more based on how well the 1989 and 1990 are maturing.

Intense, with the tarry, bittersweet cocoa–fueled grip of the vintage running through a well-endowed core of crushed plum, blackberry paste and braised fig. The muscular finish picks up notes of brick dust, pepper, warm chestnut leaf and smoldering charcoal. A throwback profile, with a hyperripe core of fruit—and it works. Best from 2015 through 2035.

Even though technology has invaded many wineries in the Rhone, Laurence Feraud and her father Paul, of Domaine Pegau have earned a reputation as "Traditionalists". The Cuvee Reservee is an illustration of just this stance. Hand harvest with sorting, no destemming and the different varietals of the cuvee co fermented together by indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks without temperature control.

Even though Laurence Feraud's influence on the estate is increasingly palpable, there is no doubt that Paul stays as the inspiration for everything that happens in the vineyards and winery. All up, it makes for a winning father and daughter team that Chateauneuf fans can embrace.

Opaque black dark crimson red colour with deep dark crimson red hue. The nose possesses outstanding intensity with perfumed aromas of dark raspberry intermixed with leather, a hint of liquorice, dried meats and spice. Rich opulent flavours of black raspberry and liquorice with an overlay of smoky dried meats followed by some leathery characters and spice on the back palate. Fine grained but firmly structured tannins. Excellent length with long black cherry, liquorice, smoked meats and spicy leather aftertaste.

as compelling as I thought it would be after tasting it last year. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate’s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. It is an amazingly complex, rich, full-throttle wine that reminds me somewhat of what the 1990 tasted like in 1994/1995. It is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape. If you are looking for the garrigue component, it’s also there.

Dense inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black hue. Potent black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry aromas are complexed by elements of leather, scorched earth, dried herbs and blackpepper. Rich and concentrated on the palate with a muscular framework, opulent black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are underpinned by scorched earth, dried herbs, some meatiness, subtle leather and spicy pepper. Chewy mouthfeel with a firm robust tannin structure. Outstanding power with a long spicy, meaty aftertaste that has some grip to it.

Every year that I've tried the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée, I've liked it better than the year before, so I've gone ahead and peremptorily added the + sign to this year's rating. Black cherries and licorice pick up a hint of chocolate in this full-bodied, rich, velvety wine that should evolve nicely for at least 12-15 years.

Deep ruby. Assertive aromas of black raspberry, potpourri and spicecake pick up a bright mineral nuance and a hint of cured meat with air. Juicy and impressively concentrated, showing real energy and spicy lift to the sappy red berry, bitter cherry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors. Fine-grained tannins build on the finish, adding shape and grip to lingering, spice-accented raspberry liqueur, smoked meat and licorice flavors.

The inimitable Feraud family, true guardians of the most traditional style of Provence and several Rhone appellations, is increasingly spearheaded by daughter Laurence, but her charismatic father, Paul, is always on the scene, with her mother, running the office. While Pegau’s expanding production should be carefully watched, the talent is certainly there. Forgetting the estate wines, there are three levels of quality and price, including a new Tetra Pak in a liter package that is quite good. There are also the Selection Laurence Feraud, a negociant line of wines, and a second negociant line-up sold under the moniker Feraud-Brunel, which Laurence oversees along with Andre Brunel. 2007 is an undeniably great vintage for the Feraud wines.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Laurence appears to be the finest example of this wine since the 1998. Wonderfully rich, concentrated notes of roasted Provencal herbs, jammy black cherries, new saddle leather, and loamy soil are present in this stunningly rich, full-bodied wine. With excellent concentration, moderate tannin, and fabulous length as well as intensity, it should be released in 2009-2010, and will keep for 20-25 years.

Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels.

Grenache: the workhorse of the Southern Rhone.

While Grenache has lost favour to Shiraz in Australia, in the Southern Rhone, Shiraz plays second fiddle. Here Grenache remains the basis for beautifully balanced, frequently exuberant reds with a strong Mediterranean influence. Apart from Grenache, twenty two other varieties are permitted throughout the entire Rhone Appellation, though generally no more than ten are employed in blends.

Rhone wine labels and the appellation system.

As in other French wine regions, the Rhone's Appellations d'Origine Controlees (AOCs) rely on sets of rules based around the concept of 'terroir' (the interaction of soil and climate on wine quality) as well as specific local and historic practises. Essentially, the whole system is organised as a pyramid. The further you climb towards the summit, the more restrictive the criteria for production, the more prestigious the terroir and the better the wines should be.

The 'Cotes du Rhone' AOC is the base of the pyramid. The second level is the 'Cotes du Rhone Villages' AOC which follows slightly different rules. Out of ninety 'communes' allowed to produce Cotes Du Rhone Villages, eighteen of them are allowed to step up the hierarchy ladder with the mention of the village name on their labels (e.g. 'Rasteau', 'Vacquerays' etc.), provided they respect the more restrictive yields as well as other analytical requirements at harvest. Finally, at the top of the pyramid, we find the local appellations, for which the term 'Crus' is the norm. Here yields generally cannot exceed 35Hls/Ha and strict conditions for cultivation apply. Chateauneuf Du Pape is one such Cru.

Chateauneuf du Pape forms the apex of the Southern Rhone's appellation pyramid. The extraordinary and long-standing reputation of its wines is such that in the 14th century, the Papacy in Avignon favoured the village as their summer residence, expanding the vineyards to suitable surrounding areas. To this day, each bottle of Chateauneuf bears the coat-of-arms of the city of Avignon, with its two crossed keys, those of Saint Peter, the first Pope. Seven Popes later, the rigour established in those times has survived the centuries. In fact, Chateauneuf became the working model for France's earliest appellation laws. Under the rules, 13 different varieties are permitted, though Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cinsault dominate over Counoise, Clairette and Bourboulenc.

We continue to import wines from the Southern Rhone, handpicking from the the very best vintages and tasting and rating most of our selections to further guide you in your choice. When you buy Rhone wines online, you can have them shipped to most of Australia.
