    A wonderful Barossa Shiraz which delivers plenty of flavour without being bulky. Very deep black purple colour with purple hue. The nose delivers a wonderful sniff with aroma of violets, confectionary, spice and blackcurrant. The palate flavour profile is filled with ‘joosy’ Shiraz flavours of spice, blackpepper, confectionary, plum and liquorice allsorts. Excellent length, fine grained dry tannins, but balanced, followed by nuances of vanilla. Long aftertaste of liquorice allsorts, violet infusions, blackpepper and plum.

    The 2003 Shiraz Reiver is a 100% Shiraz from the Greenock region of Barossa cropped at 1.2 tons of fruit per acre, and aged 18 months in primarily new French barrels and small foudres. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer has fashioned an opaque purple-colored offering displaying a gorgeous bouquet of crushed rocks, violets, and blueberries that is reminiscent of the prodigious 1990 St.-Emilion, Beausejour-Duffau. It possesses a terrific texture, impressive purity, a long finish, and atypically low alcohol (14%) for such ripeness and intensity.

Deep garnet-brick colored, the 2005 Carnival of Love displays a more earthy, meaty, gamey character with plenty of coffee and damp loam aromas fused with smoked bacon, some iron ore, Chinese plums, a little floral note and even a bit of truffles character coming through. It is very rich and full-bodied, with the acid line standing out a little from the very concentrated and quite evolved fruit core. Still, it has amazing layers and a lot to give on the very long, licorice-laced finish, even if just a bit warm. Drink it to 2020+.

    Outstanding colour displaying an inky black core with a bright dark crimson purple hue. A complex bouquet of blackcurrants and mulberries laced with faint hints of bay leaf merge into some subtle cedary tobacco characters, earth and spice. Medium to full bodied with a refined elegant mouthfeel, rich flavours of blackcurrant and shades of liquorice overlay vanillin cedar, light tobacco and spice characters. Excellent length with very finely grained, perfectly integrated tannins showing their polish. Long conclusion of blackcurrant, liquorice, vanillin cedar, a touch of tobacco and spice.

    The 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of Moss Wood cabernet sauvignon; 1973 was the first release. This 2013 release was matured in all French oak, as you’d expect, though only 15% was new, as you might not. It’s a blend of 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc.
    Seriously fine grained. It may seem like a funny thing to mention first-up, but it’s almost the chief characteristic both of this release, and so often of Moss Wood cabernet. Or at least historically so. Oak has also been a key player over the past decade and even at 15%, it’s still plain to see/taste here too. Amazingly enough. It helps make for a seductively textural wine, backed by blackcurrant, boysenberry, black olive and mint. Length is excellent. So too balance, especially in the context that this is still super-young. Suggestions of tobacco are nothing more than that. There is no question that this will age well. Drink by 2038.

    Tasted: 10/09/1999. Moss Wood has followed Cullens in deciding to no longer produce a reserve wine in addition to the traditional Moss Wood Cabernet. Instead Keith Mugford has decided to concentrate his efforts on making one great Cabernet in the reserve style. 1996 is the first vintage in which Moss Wood have made the Cabernet in the reserve style and it has been given an extra 6 months in oak and an extra 6 months bottle maturation before release.1996 was a perfect growing season and this has resulted in a wine which winemaker Keith Mugford beleives is the best he has made. This is the most complex and complete wine of the Moss Wood Cabernets, and certainly reflecting the viticultural management changes in the vineyard, as well as the changes in fermentation and blend. This is clearly the peak, after years of carefully introduced changes.The wine was matured in a combination of 50% new French oak and 50% two and three year old barrels for a period of two years. Opaque brick red colour. The nose is the most complex of the line up. Liquorice, chocolate, spice and confectionary aromas abound. Full bodied palate, generous, with pronounced flavours of blackcurrant, spice, cedar and a trace of vanilla. Perfect balance. Fine grained tannins followed by long mulberry, plum and spice aftertaste. Cellar 10-15 years.

    Very deep black purple colour with black purple hue. The nose is impressive with lifted top note of blackcurrant, followed by violet and liquorice allsorts with just a hint of truffle and earth. The palate has excellent weight showing considerable refinement. Flavours of cedar, blackcurrant and spice emerge, however, the power is missing. Fine grained tannins with spicy back palate and aftertaste.

    The original Mount Langi vineyard was established in the 1870’s when European immigrants travelled to Western Victoria to discover gold. By the turn of last century, early vineyards were replaced by sheep farming and it was not until 1963 that the Italian born Fratin brothers re-established the Shiraz vineyard with a Swiss clone.
    A delightful example of Langi Ghiran showing both power and elegance.

    Tasting Note:
    Totally opaque black purple colour with deep dark purple red hue – still looking quite youthful. The nose delivers perfumed scents of violets, liquorice and blackpepper followed by some blackberry, dark chocolate and spice notes. Full bodied the palate boasts magnificent concentration, depth and persistence with generous flavours of liquorice, aniseed and blackpepper followed by some confectionary and spice on the back palate. Perfectly balanced very fine grained tannins. Very long persistent aftertaste of blackpepper, liquorice, blackberry and spice.
    An outstanding Mount Langi that whilst drinking well now is also capable of another 5-8 years cellaring (2011-2019)

    Very deep almost opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Top note of violets followed by spice, blackberry and plum, delivering a perfumed lift. Elegant palate structure with strong flavours of black pepper and spice over a very spicy back palate. Fine grained tannins, perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, blackberry and spice. An excellent example of cool climate Shiraz.

    Tasting Note: This wine shows the ruby brilliance in colour for which the Cabernets family of grapes is famous. It also shows a concentration of that colour, the aroma and flavour that result from the lowering of crop yield by frost. The 1998 Quintet has a powerful, perfumed, youthful Cabernet aroma with faint hints of chocolate blended with fine oak. It is already showing remarkable smoothness filling the mouth with sweet fruit. The alcohol level is moderate and non-intrusive which Mount Mary believe suits these grape varieties. It is typical the usual elegant Mount Mary Cabernet with lots of lingering complex flavours. It has good balance and persisting clean finish with adequate grip. 12.5% Alc/Vol

    The 2004 Quintet is a composition of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot.

    David Middleton describes the wine in the following way: “This year’s blend is more Cabernet Sauvignon dominant than usual, though it is not obvious to taste. The beauty of the blend is in the complexity derived from the varietal mix. This inherent complexity avoids the need to play any tricks in the winery to add other flavours. None of us have seen a Quintet as densely coloured as this particular example”

    The late John Middleton Commented 'that of recent Quintets, this was the closest to his ideal.'

    A very refined Cabernets. The wine is comprised of 5 Bordeaux grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. (Interestingly, this vintage Mount Mary have opted for a composite cork rather than the traditional cork). Medium body, brilliant crimson colour with crimson mauve purple hue. Superb nose, showing great refinement. Top note of violets, blackcurrant and cassis delivering a very refined sniff. The palate delivers classic Mount Mary elegance with refinement, using a very spicy black pepper as the backbone for the flavour profile. Flavours of blackcurrant, cedar and violet infusions are merged with fine, perfectly balanced tannins. Flavours of plum, cassis and blackcurrant to the forefront. A superb wine that needs time to build and gain further complexity.

    This is a rich and intense wine with great colour, aroma and flavour. There are typical, earthy Pinot Noir characteristics combined with powerful cherry and plum which are well matched by plenty fire from the alcohol, a hint of volatility and well balanced, tannic finish. This shows what a good year it was for this variety. The wine needs plenty of time to integrate and be ready for consumption when it will develop in the typical, velvety, smoothness of pinot. It shows great promise now. Mount Mary Pinot Noirs are deliberately structured to not be full of young berry fruit when young, they are sometimes bitter and angular. 13.5 % Alc./Vol.

    The 1997 is from the period when Dr John Middleton was assisted by winemaker and viticulturist, Mario Marson. Together they produced a collection of wines that were truly formidable.     The Mount Mary Cabernets are amongst the country's finest and positioned along side Penfolds Grange Hermitage and Henschke Hill of Grace as icon wines. The Cabernets are made with a Bordeaux inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

    Tasting note: An extraordinary bottle of wine, even 'blind freddy' can tell that it's 'posh'. This wine definitely draws its inspiration from Bordeaux First Growth, and in particular, Chateau Lafite and Chateau Latour in its finesse and construction. It's almost impossible to compare this wine with other Australian reds, as neither its structure or flavour conforms to an Australian norm. It is without a doubt a world class wine. Made by Mario Marson, John Middleton's winemaker at Mount Mary, the wine is a reaffirmation of the fact that Australia is capable of producing First Growth quality and finesse. Deep crimson colour, with purple mauve hues. Superb complex aristocratic nose, powerful aromas of violets, blackcurrant, spice and cedar fill in the nose with an aire of grace and confidence only seen in First Growths. The palate is superbly structured - elegant, and yet filled with remarkable power and concentration of flavour. A seamless marriage of component parts - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Exquisite balance with very long aftertaste of cedar, violets and blackcurrants.     Outstanding depth of colour displaying an inky black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Showing good intensity ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas emerge from the glass with underlying vanillin cedar, leather and spice notes. Rich, voluptuously textured and velvety the palate features mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum all caressing the palate. There’s still plenty of fruit here with the tertiary characters just starting to move in. Soft supple mouthfeel with underlying nuances of vanillin cedar, earthy leather and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. Superb depth with a very long silky aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum, earthy leather and spicy vanillin oak.

    Ben Riggs is a big bloke who is very much at home on a footy field or a basketball court, giving as good as he gets, so one almost intuitively expects that the Mr. Riggs will be as big in stature as the man himself, however, this is not the case. Mr. Riggs Shiraz is about refinement, elegance and force.
    The wine is a total saturate of black purple with black purple hue. The nose is more refined and perfumed than the Penny’s Hill – violet top notes, followed by cedar, spice and blackberry – a wonderful sniffing experience. The palate has elegance and force with explosive flavour power waves. Mouthfilling, with flavour of spice, blackberry, violet infusions, vanilla and white pepper. A wine of exceptional length and depth. Perfect tannin structure, with very long spice, blackberry, vanilla aftertaste. Very Limited stocks.

    The blockbuster 2004 Shiraz was aged 18 months in French oak (40% new). It is a wine of great intensity, with an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of camphor, graphite, blackberries, tar, and charcoal. Rich, super-pure fruit cascades over the palate of this opaque purple-colored, full-bodied, voluptuously-textured Shiraz. Consume it over the next 6-7 years.

    Tasted 11/05/2002: Last year during a visit to McLaren Vale, winemaker Ben Riggs pulled us to one side and ushered us towards some very special barrels of Shiraz. Let us say from the outset, that tasting barrels is a tricky business as each barrel has its own idiosyncrasies which can influence a wines profile. These include the type of oak used to make the barrel, the forest from which the oak was grown, the skill of the cooper, the level of toast and so on. What’s more, it’s easy to be mislead if a wine maker shows you wine only from the best barrels, which may not actually be representative of the final blended wine.
    The solution was to sample every barrel in order to gain an objective profile of the wine. Our misgivings soon vanished - the barrels were all sensational! Our joy was short lived however, when we were informed that the total production was limited to a miniscule four hundred and fifty cases. For twelve months we haggled over quantity of stock without so much as a whimper of discussion about price. As time went on, the volumes kept shrinking. The excitement and competition that this wine had stirred was understandable, as the wine now christened “Mr.Riggs” was clearly destined to be a new cult wine and yet another triumph for Ben who this year completes his 22nd vintage in Australia. Mr.Riggs is quite simply an exceptional wine from an exceptional wine maker. Needless to say, stocks are extremely limited.

    Tasting Notes: The word seamless is sometimes used in relation to a wines integration of component parts, but in reality, seamlessness is a quality that is difficult to achieve and thus the component parts can easily be identified. Ben Riggs has produced a seamless Shiraz whose velvet texture and persistence of flavour establish a new benchmark of stylistic finesse for McLaren Vale. Opaque, black, crimson colour. The nose is superb with that wonderful sniffing quality that almost renders drinking the wine unnecessary. The traditional Shiraz notes are all evident but not in their own right. Violets, prunes, vanilla, confectionary and liquorice bullets hit an exquisite top chord. The palate structure is indeed seamless and is built around a silky smooth texture that makes this wine a potential drinking hazard! Layers of dark chocolate, vanilla & blackpepper are perfectly intermeshed over a velvet tannin background.     Tasted 11/11/2003: 2002 is possibly the greatest vintage to date from McLaren Vale. A big statement that can only ultimately be tested by the quality of the wine in the glass. BEN RIGGS has evolved an omnipresence with his wine making talents. His expertise is sought in Italy, Napa Valley, Greece, Bordeaux & Southern France where his wines have a distinct Riggs ‘finger print’. With twenty Australian vintages to his credit, Riggs has developed an exceptional skill for winemaking and blending. His signature wine, Mr.Riggs, has that very rare quality of a ‘double flavour wave’ that is experienced in only the very finest wines. The wine has been matured in 80% French oak and 20% American oak.
    Opaque black crimson purple colour. Perfumed nose of violets, spice, cedar and plum. The palate is mouthfilling, displaying the ultimate trilogy of class – elegance, refinement and power. Flavours of violet infusions, chocolate and honeycomb bar followed by plum, white pepper and spice. Perfect balance with fine dry finish. Then at the moment when one imagines the taste sensations are complete, another wave emerges, with strong flavours of chocolate, vanilla, dark cherries, raspberry and white pepper. A superb wine which has that special Ben Riggs quality imprinted all the way.

    Aged in 80% French oak and 20% American (of which 60% is new), this barrel sample (to be bottled in November) was immensely impressive. There will be 400 cases of this dense inky/purple-colored Shiraz. It offers a gorgeous nose of licorice, melted road tar, blackberry liqueur, and sweet black currants. There is dazzling palate persistence, tremendous texture, and full body, but the wine is neither heavy nor out of balance. The finish lasts for 45+ seconds. With thrilling density and richness yet good equilibrium, it will drink well for 10-15 years.

    Outstanding depth of colour displaying an inky black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Showing good intensity ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum aromas emerge from the glass with underlying vanillin cedar, leather and spice notes. Rich, voluptuously textured and velvety the palate features mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum all caressing the palate. There’s still plenty of fruit here with the tertiary characters just starting to move in. Soft supple mouthfeel with underlying nuances of vanillin cedar, earthy leather and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. Superb depth with a very long silky aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice, dark plum, earthy leather and spicy vanillin oak.

    Ben Riggs is a big bloke who is very much at home on a footy field or a basketball court, giving as good as he gets, so one almost intuitively expects that the Mr. Riggs will be as big in stature as the man himself, however, this is not the case. Mr. Riggs Shiraz is about refinement, elegance and force.
    The wine is a total saturate of black purple with black purple hue. The nose is more refined and perfumed than the Penny’s Hill – violet top notes, followed by cedar, spice and blackberry – a wonderful sniffing experience. The palate has elegance and force with explosive flavour power waves. Mouthfilling, with flavour of spice, blackberry, violet infusions, vanilla and white pepper. A wine of exceptional length and depth. Perfect tannin structure, with very long spice, blackberry, vanilla aftertaste. Very Limited stocks.

It is a wine of great intensity, with an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of camphor, graphite, blackberries, tar, and charcoal.     The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve could easily be called a Pauillac from Australia. Dense ruby/purple, a classic Cabernet nose of cedar wood, smoke, cassis, mineral, lead pencil, and new oak soars from the glass. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and multi-layered texture, high levels of glycerin, and a seamless, concentrated, long finish with well-integrated tannin, acidity, and alcohol. This is no wimpish wine at 14.6% alcohol, but sadly, there are only 290 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from 25-30 year old vines. Anticipated maturity: now-2020. Drink 2003 - 2020

    Notes sourced from Noon Winery: Deep red/purple in colour, with an amazing aroma of super-ripe macerated cherries and dark plums –it certainly gets your attention. The palate is rich and concentrated –high in alcohol, with a trace of sweetness (not as high as in 1998) and masses of flavour, leading to a strong, dry finish. Almost a meal in itself, try it with a really good farmhouse cheddar or equally rich Osso Bucco or game dish. Quite an experience.

Dark red-purple; bramble, prune, plum and earth aromas lead into a palate which is almost impossible to describe, the sweetness coming from alcohol and (it would seem) a touch of unfermented sugar, which makes one wonder just what the baume level of the grapes were when they were finally picked.     The first vintage of Oliver's super premium Shiraz called the ‘HJ Reserve' was produced in 2000 as a tribute to the memory of H.J. ‘Bert’ Oliver. Fruit for the 2005 H.J. was sourced from a single block planted in 1948. Maturation took place in 100% all new French oak from a variety of different coopers for a period of just under two years. Total production was around 600 dozen.

    A Superb McLaren Vale Shiraz that’s entering it’s peak drinking window.

    Totally opaque black crimson colour with a dark crimson red hue. The nose shows excellent intensity delivering a very perfumed bouquet of liquorice and blackberries over some vanillin cedar, touches of dark chocolate and spice. Rich and concentrated the palate possesses a beautiful supple texture and is still very fresh with plenty of life left in it. Opulent flavours of liquorice, ripe blackberries and dark chocolate flood the palate with background nuances of vanillin oak, some leather and spice. Long aftertaste of liquorice, ripe blackberries, dark chocolate, spicy vanillin cedar and light earthy leather like characters. A great buy given the proximity to current release pricing.

    Oliver’s in McLaren Vale have well over a century of success written in the wine trade. Their HJ Shiraz acknowledges just one chapter - but what a tribute it is. Herbert Oliver (aka HJ), was the inheritor of a bustling and diversified farm when his father passed away in 1970. HJ’s direction turned it in another - exclusively to grapes. With the help of local Aboriginals he had already planted the oldest block of Shiraz currently on the Oliver's property - now 65 years old. Ironically, it was sourced from cuttings from the Oliver’s original vineyard, which back then was already over 80 years old. He uprooted the old vines (perhaps he felt they were too shy bearing) and the family has only recently forgiven him for that!

    This is the second release of an Oliver’s Taranga Reserve wine. Carefully crafted from the very best parcels of old vine Shiraz, barrel selected and bottle aged.

    Parker Coonawarra Estate make two wines, they are both red, both a blend of Cabernets and both are highly sought after. The Parker Terra Rossa First Growth is the flagship wine and is the result of some very conscious planning of viticulture and winemaking. Ruskin once said, “quality is never an accident, it is the result of intelligent effort”, and this is certainly the case with First Growth. The outstanding feature of the First Growth wine is the incredible depth and persistence of flavour. That kind of concentration can only be produced by meticulous viticulture and very careful winemaking and barrel selection. The First Growth is inspired by the Great wines of Bordeaux and is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

Outstanding persistence of flavour, which runs very long into the aftertaste. Fine grained tannins, dry, but perfectly balanced, with aftertaste of blackcurrant, truffle, tobacco, cedar and spicy oak. Cellar 8-10 years.

    Penfolds St Henri is unusual among high quality Australian red wines as it does not rely on any new oak. It is matured in old, 1460-litre vats that allow the wine to develop, imparting minimal, if any oak character. Although a small proportion of Cabernet is sometimes used to improve structure, the focal point for St Henri remains Shiraz. Totally opaque inky black colour with deep black purple hue. The nose displays good perfumed lift with aromas of ripe blackberry and liquorice dominate followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin confectionary characters and spice. The palate is very rich and quite luscious for St Henri, no doubt a result of the warmer vintage conditions experienced throughout South Australia. Mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry and liquorice with a light toasty overlay followed by some dark chocolate and spice. Very fine grained, almost velvet like tannins. Excellent power with long ripe blackberry, liquorice, toasty oak and spice aftertaste.

Full bodied the palate is loaded with ripe blackcurrant and cassis fruit followed by a touch of liquorice and some spicy cedar on the back palate. Very fine grained well integrated tannin structure. Excellent length with long ripe blackcurrant and spicy cedar aftertaste. A generous fully ripened Bin 407.

Suave and velvety on entry, gaining structure in the mid-palate and offering incisive red and dark berry preserve and bitter cherry flavors and notes of violet pastille and anise. The finish is sweet and penetrating, with very good closing grip and persistence. Lots going on here, flavor-wise, but there's also strong spine and youthfully gripping tannins that call for some time to resolve. At the very least decant this if you'll be drinking it any time soon.

    Blended of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 St Henri Shiraz is a blend of 5 different South Australia sub-regions spanning from Robe to Clare Valley. Never seeing new oak, this vintage was aged 15 months in seasoned 1460 liter vats. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a purely fruited nose giving notes of intense cassis, crushed blackberries, some kirsch, black pepper, baking spices and cloves. Full, rich and concentrated, it’s still a bit taut with very crisp acid and firm finely textured tannins, giving a long berry laced finish. Consider drinking it from 2013 to 2025+.

    First produced in 1960 by Max Schubert, Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor man’s Grange’ because components of the blend are matured in the same barrels as the previous vintage of Penfolds Grange. 2004 was an outstanding vintage in South Australia with above average winter rainfall followed by mild conditions up until February with hotter weather experienced throughout March and April. The 2004 Bin 389 was produced from a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Shiraz, and matured for 13 months in a combination of new, one year old and older American oak.

    An outstanding example of Penfolds Bin 389 with Winemaker Peter Gago favourably comparing the quality of the 2004 Bin 389 to the great 1996 & 1998 vintages. Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Superb nose, with violet top note followed by spice, blackcurrant and liquorice allsorts. The palate is mouthfilling – full bodied, explosive flavours of black pepper with hints of earth, dark chocolate and mocha. Fine grained dry tannins, perfectly balanced to the finish. Very long aftertaste of mocha, old leather, dark chocolate and black pepper.

    Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. Made from a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Shiraz the wine was matured for 13 months in 34% new American oak hogsheads with the balance in seasoned American oak.

    Totally opaque black crimson colour with black heart and deep black dark red hue. The nose displays good perfumed lift with aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and liquorice followed by a hint of vanillin spice as an end note. Full bodied, generous and rich this is one of the more opulent Bin 389’s. Mouthfilling ripe blackcurrant and blackberry flavours are followed by some dark chocolate, liquorice and spice. Velvet smooth tannins. Excellent concentration with very long aftertaste of ripe blackberry, dark chocolate and vanillin oak.

    This elegantly styled Coonawarra Shiraz saw maturation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Deep dark red purple colour with dark crimson mauve hue. Subdued aromas of liquorice allsorts, confectionary and plum with a hint of spice also emerging. Medium weight with elegant palate structure the wine displays flavours of spice, blackberry and confectionary followed by some peppery characters on the finish. Fine grained, slightly dryish tannins but balanced. Aftertaste of blackberry, liquorice and spice.

    Deep, dark red, the wine has an extremely complex and varietally expressive bouquet, its fragrant scents having a pinot noir-like allure, drawing you back repeatedly. The blackcurrant and cassis palate is a seamless extension of the bouquet, with extreme length and such impeccable balance it hovers on the edge of outright elegance. Drink by 2040.

    Tasted August 3rd 2013: Outstanding impenetrable inky black purple colour with very deep black purple hue. Superb nose with aromas of blackcurrant intermixed with blackberry followed by some liquorice, vanillin confectionary and spice scents. The palate reveals one of the most rich and concentrated Bin 389’s produced to date with mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice and blackcurrant with some undertones of spicy vanillin cedar and a touch of blackpepper on the back palate. Superb structural qualities perfectly complement the wines fruit intensity. Fine grained, dryish but perfectly tannins. Long rich blackberry, liquorice, blackcurrant and spicy vanillin oak aftertaste. One of the all time classic Bin 389’s.

    A 51/49% blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz sourced from seven regions in SA, matured for 14 months in American oak hogsheads (40% new). Shares the exceptional depth of purple-crimson colour with the other superstars of this vintage. It is full-bodied, with layer-upon-layer of flavour, yet has a plush, welcoming character. The perfectly ripe blackcurrant and blackberry fruit has a coat of Belgian chocolate, the oak already submerged under the fruit. Drink by 2045.

    Deep crimson. Intense plum/dark cherry/blackberry/dark chocolate aromas with some menthol notes. Very powerful and concentrated with blackberry/dark chocolate/mocha flavours and rich granular tannins. A great and often overlooked vintage.
    89% Shiraz 11%, Cabernet Sauvignon. Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Mclaren Vale and Coonawarra.A dry, mild even-ripening vintage in the Barossa. Intermittent rains but mild conditions in McLaren Vale and a warm, dry autumn in Coonawarra delivered a very high quality vintage.

    Grange is the benchmark by which all other reds in this country, and, increasingly, overseas, are often measured. The reasons for this are many yet straightforward: Concentration of flavour - Grange is decadently rich with layer upon layer of flavour that coats the tongue and scents the breath minutes after swallowing. This kind of fruit weight can only come from the finest, old vine fruit and low yielding vineyards. Complexity - the profuse aromas that leap from a glass of Grange defy the typical adjectives used by wine tasters. These are hedonistic aromas of rich ripe fruits and spice yet with an "otherness" of which wine tasters speak of in hushed tones. Further, each time the taster returns to the glass the wine hasevolved new aromas, new interest, new reasons to get excited. Longevity - Grange blossoms with 15 to 20 years of bottle age, when most other reds have past their best, and better vintages can live and continue developing for decades longer. And finally, Heritage - first produced by Max Schubert in 1951, the '94 Grange represents over 40 years of winemaking excellence.

    Vintage Conditions: Barossa Valley - a drier than average growing season with rainfall at 83 per cent of the 10 year mean, reducing yield in a virtually disease-free season. Ripening was slow. Good sugar levels and alcohols and ripe flavours were realised.McLaren Vale- good rainfall and mild temperatures.Coonawarra - a warm, very dry Autumn followed a cool and sometimes wet Summer.

    Oak Maturation: Aged in 100% new American oak for 18 months

    Winemaker John Duval's Comments: Colour: Dark plum with brick red rim.

    Nose: Rich and complex with flashes of green tea leaf and truffle, interlocked with freshly tanned leather and savoury notes, prune and stewed blueberry fruits. Enticing classy oak (cedar) elevated, yet not overstated, by smokey barrel ferment character.

    Palate: What is promised on the nose is delivered on the palate - an opulent, intense, hedonistic wine. Layers of massive Shiraz fruit and expertly crafted oak manifest themselves into a seemingly endless variety of flavours - deep plum, licorice, cedar, chocolate, coffee -all compressed into a silken, round mouthfeel. Forceful, ripe tannins are balanced by sheer weight of fruit. An excellent offering from an above average vintage. 13.5% Alcohol Volume.

    Serving and Cellaring suggestions: Grange is a wine that will develop over at least thirty years in the cellar. It is recommended that wine lovers wait at least 10 to 15 years, however the wine can be, and often is, enjoyed in its youth for its sheer opulence and power. It is the ultimate match with rich red meat dishes. This Grange should be decanted before serving.
