There's only one 350-liter barrel of the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot, but the resulting wine is lovely, revealing aromas of pear, orange oil, nutmeg and clove, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless palate. Unfortunately, I imagine securing even a bottle or two will be a considerable challenge.

1x 350 litre barrel, unracked, from Les Fairendes. The oak is quite marked at the moment but there is easily enough fruit to cover it. A rumbustious approach with a gorgeous volume of fruit plus of course the oak backing. That will be cleaned up before bottling and this will be excellent. Drink from 2026-2033.

The most concentrated of Loosen's 2016 GGs, but also the most closed. This has everything you expect from a Grand Cru quality dry Mosel riesling. After the creamy richness on the mid-palate comes a mighty wave of minerals at the bold finish. Better from 2018 and for many years after.

The 2016er Erdener Prälat GG is made from very old un-grafted vines, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. This offers a gorgeous nose of pear, mango, grapefruit, passion fruit, brown sugar, apricot blossom, fine spices and flint stone from reduction. The wine is slightly bold on the palate and leaves a juicy and clean feel in the long and nicely firm and bold finish. The aftertaste is nicely long and elegant. 2021-2031.

Rather occluded nose for the moment. Sherbetty sweetness is the first thing to hit the palate. Still very tightly wound. Lacks the immediate appeal of the Treppchen. Wait? There is certainly density and persistence here.

Tasted in late July 2017 and slated for late September bottling, this leads with a pungent, site-typical meld of sassafras, horehound and kumquat. In keeping with the evolution of Loosen and Schug’s approach to Prälat over the past decade, it displays more than enough animation and primary juiciness to accompany its glycerol-richness and sense of stuffing. Suggestions of apple and mango exhibit a dichotomy of ripeness along with “green” pungency, but in the context of this wine’s piquant, zesty citricity and sense of herbal suffusion, I find the effect stimulating rather than inharmonious. The finish here grips aggressively but without overt bitterness and with persistent refreshment. This could conceivably be the last of its kind, as Loosen and Schug are considering discontinuing a “regular” Prälat Grosses Gewächs and instead shunting the entirety of dry wine labeled for that site into their “Reserve” program.

A fruity, saline laced white that carries gorgeous textural shape.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of pear, lime and green apple fill the nostrils followed by some Mediterranean herb infusions and stony mineral notes that have a saline like edge. Delicious pear and green to red apple fruits carry gorgeous textural shape across the palate. Traces of lime, tangerine, wet slate and a saline like minerality lie underneath. Crisp acidity with a long fruity, saline laced finish.

The 2020 Idig Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a pure, chalky, fresh, concentrated and iodine- and lemon-scented nose representing the limestone terroir of the cru as well as the warmth of the vintage. Saline and crystalline on the first palate, this is a pure, fresh and concentrated but also lush and vitalizing Riesling with a pure, enormously saline and tensioned finish with fine tannin grip. 12.5% stated alcohol. So deep, it feels like it’s pulling you in the direction of the center of the earth! Yet, another side of the wine seems to float above the world. Radically mineral finish that leaves you in no doubt about this great dry riesling’s future! From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

The 2020er Idig GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, presents a beautifully smoky and floral nose of anise, cassis, jasmine, licorice, and herbs, as well as a hint of camphor. The wine proves superbly zesty and elegant on the comparatively light-weighted yet complex palate. The finish is super long and focused, despite more weight and presence coming through, especially with airing. The overall balance remains on the fresh and lively side, and we would opt to enjoy this beauty rather in its primary phase of development. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2020 Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosse Lage offers a clear, pure, fresh, saline and really classic Riesling bouquet that is clearly influenced by iron notes as well as the ripe and concentrated Riesling berry. Saline and finessed on the palate, this is a tightly structured pure and tensioned dry Riesling with lots of salinity but also ripe and fleshy fruit with fine tannins, both representing a warm, ripe vintage. It is very long and saline on the pure and youthful finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2022. Drink 2026 - 2050.

If you’re a Barolo fan, then here’s a dry riesling for you! The first impression is silky and suave, but then the massive structure - including tons of fine tannin - asserts itself. The 2020er Ölberg-Hart GG, as it is referred to on the consumer label, captures one’s attention with some beautifully refined and aromatic notes of almond cream, herbs, spices, candied grapefruit, anise, and Conference pear. The wine develops great juicy presence which gives it depth and complexity, while the finish is more restrained but also zesty and spicy. It proves still compact but the overall complexity at play is superb. There is a little bit more presence and intensity in the very long finish, so that we would opt to enjoy it rather in its youth. Christmann's 2020 Vogelsang Neustadt Riesling Grosse Lage is the first release of this steep cru that the family bought three years before. The wine opens with a coolish and lime-fresh bouquet of crushed stones and lemons. It is remarkably cool and fresh for the vintage, which comes through on the palate. Here, the wine shows super-ripe and intense fruit, whereas the coolish and saline limestone terroir comes out only on the finish with fresh and lemon-scented acidity and long, mouthwatering salinity. The lemon/lime-green colored 2018 Idig Riesling Trocken "GG" offers a deep and complex, still yeasty-scented and flinty nose. Lush and juicy on the palate but with a fine and silky texture, fine tannins and a very long finish, this is an outstandingly rich and powerful Riesling with perhaps some grams of sugar or a lower acidity but with the vitality of a remarkable wine that will surely and clearly improve in the bottle.

Steen is of course the old South African name for chenin blanc. This comes from an old vine parcel. Au naturale winemaking of course, from one of South Africa’s most notable winemakers, and one who was part of a revolution for avant garde and premium wine from the country.
High toned green herb, floral and appley aromas and flavours, a good deal of saline nuttiness and wheatgerm savouriness. It’s very concentrated and decidedly savoury, preserved lemon but with a huge, oatmeal savouriness to taste and chewy, powdery-minerally feel. Great intensity and yet control. Outstanding. Smoke and petrol nuances add breadth to the aromas of rosemary oil, pear and soil tones. There is impressive volume to the dense and seductively textured medium weight flavors thanks to the abundant amount of dry extract that imparts a sappy quality to the lingering, powerful and balanced finale. Moreau's production has diminished to the extent that space is no longer a constraint, meaning that he can afford the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc a longer élevage on the lees than was hitherto the case. An exuberantly floral nose also displays notes of petrol, rosemary oil and a variety of white orchard fruit scents. The rich, concentrated, powerful and sappy larger-bodied flavors coat the palate with dry extract while delivering excellent length on the muscular and mildly rustic finale. The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeots 1er Cru is composed, almost understated on the nose, with oyster shells and crustacea infusing the yellow fruit. Excellent delineation. The fresh, vibrant palate is more lime-infused than Moreau’s other cuvées and, as such, may not have quite the same level of complexity or terroir expression. Thoroughly enjoyable - perhaps the punters' choice from the Domaine. Drink 2025-2038.

Only from old vines in Fairendes. Clear pale lemon. The nose is entirely white fruit and indicates the power to come on the palate. There is a fine backbone to this as well as the habitual flesh of Morgeot, and the oak component is absolutely in harmony. 2020 Alheit Vineyards Hemelrand Vine Garden
    Western Cape, SOUTH AFRICA

    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 13.1%
    Closure: Cork

Hemelrand Vine Garden is a white field blend that changes every year depending on the vintage conditions, as the idea behind is to bottle a wine just as the vineyard produces it. The Hemelrand vineyard, situated on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge at 360 meters above sea level on gravelly clay and Sandstone, was planted in 2010 to Chardonnay, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chenin blanc and Muscat Blanc a petit grain. As mentioned, the proportions of the different grapes produced significantly varies each vintage. The 2020 release is composed of 32% Chardonnay, 25% Roussanne, 25% Chenin, 13% Verdelho and 5% Muscat.
The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard and whole bunch pressed. The resulting juice was very lightly settled with no additions and wild fermented in old barrels of various sizes. After fermentation, the wine was kept on lees for around twelve months, then rested in tank on fine lees without fining for a further six months prior to bottling.

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Hemelrand Vine Garden comes from a field blend albeit planted in rows that makes it easier to manage. It is aged on the gross lees for 12 months. It has a wonderful bouquet with yellow plum, honeysuckle and a very slight petrolly scent, all supremely well defined. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry, fine tension with a pithy, lightly spiced finish that lingers with touches of stem ginger and fennel. Maybe my pick of Alheit's 2020s? This is a profound white Rhône blend that will be fascinating to watch age in bottle. Drink: 2023-2038.

The Corte Giara range is an offspring of the famous Allegrini family in the Valpolicella region. Together with a few select winegrowers, they created a concept centred around modern and eclectic wines, representing great value for money, with international varietals through to Amarone, Recioto and other classic wines of the Veneto region.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear and red apple scents enchant the olfactory senses with a faint whiff of honeysuckle, musk and spice also evident. Beautifully shaped with a slippery, well rounded feel, the palate features delicious pear, red apple skin and spicy lime fruits over a delicate quince and wet stone back drop. Showing excellent intensity it has brisk underlying acidity and a long, moreish finish.

La Combe; a tiny hamlet above the village of Rotalier is home to the larger-than-life “Fan Fan” Jean-François Ganevat. Jean-François came back to run the family estate in 1998 after ten years working Burgundy and he combines his passion for the Jura terroir – here ideal for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - with a staunch defence of Burgundian techniques; low yields and most recently biodynamic methods for which he has now gained Demeter certification.

In addition to the ‘Estate’ wines there are, since 2013, a group of wines made from grapes purchased from around the region and in others, all are grown by their vigneron friends to their standards, so organic or bio-dynamically farmed and tended. They pay very high prices to get the quality they want. Each of these necogiant wine are made on the property by Jean-François and his small team; from grapes into wine, and have the same Ganevat precision, levity and exquisite texture despite the differing origins of the grapes.

Kopin Pierres Bleues is a blend of 75% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Gris from Beaujolais. Fermentation occurs in a tronconic wooden vat, semi-carbonic macération with natural yeasts, no punch downs or pump overs, not filtered and nothing added.

Vinification is done naturally with direct pressing, transferred into oak barrels for fermentation and a maturation of more than two years. As always there are no additions.

Saline, pear and green melon, or something, but not overly fruity as such, plus a little white pepper/green chilli. Fleshy but fine, with a chalky feel, a little creaminess in with pear and apple, good balance and a stony and brine-laced finish. Very interesting. Different. Drink 2021-2025.

Armand Heitz has made enormous strides in the relatively short time he has been in control of the family domaine. Formed in the 1980's as Domaine Heitz-Lochardet, since 2019 the wines have been labelled as Domaine Armand Heitz to better reflect how much progress Armand has made since began the winemaking following his studies in 2011. His viticulture philosophy is holistic, with permaculture and even livestock on the property ensuring a strong biodiversity for his vines. Winemaking is classic, including whole cluster fermentations, and the resultant wines are expressive and pure in style.

Friuli, in the far northeast of Italy, has a reputation for making the country's best white wines. Winemaker Justin Bubb explains, "The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines".
From a 30-year-old site in San Martino al Tagliamento, near Pordenone, the vineyard sits at the base of the Alps and the soils are a mix of clay and alpine gravel from alluvial deposits.

Etna in north-east Sicily is better known for its reds than whites, but the best examples of the latter, made from the local grape Carricante, can be spectacular, somewhere between a Burgundian Aligoté and a top Soave in style. This is totally unoaked, but draws richness from six months of lees’ ageing. Stony and intense, with notes of lime, fennel and lemon juice, steely, palate-cleansing acidity and a mineral tang. Best drunk with the Mediterranean sun on your face, but it’ll cheer you up in winter too.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

Les Bruyères is single south facing Arbois site planted on Triassic clay soils, with a rich vein of blue marl running through it. While the site is one of the warmest Stephane works with, the wines from here tend to maintain a firm backbone of structure and salinity that ensures harmony on the finish.

The low-yielding biodynamic Savagnin grapes for these Vin Jaunes are hand-picked and the juice fermented in steel tanks. The mostly clay soils give wines of higher acidity (whereas limestone gives less acidity and more minerality), and strong backbone. After the primary fermentation the wine is part-filled (around 85%) into old barrels (228 lt. usually) and a 'flor' yeast veil or 'voile' develops on the surface of the wine, protecting it from oxidation and adding complex aromas and flavours to the wine. The barrels are stored in a cool but 'airy' cellar (not underground) for around 6-7 years so the dryer atmosphere causes the evaporation of water and therefore concentration of flavours and reduction of the wine volume. In fact, usually only 620ml. (the size of a Vin Jaune bottle) remains from a litre. This is very expensive wine to make, as not only is there a huge volume loss, but often some barrels need to be culled.

Chateau Chalon is no doubt the greatest site in the Jura for making Vin Jaune, the Grand Cru if you will, and produces wines with a touch more finesse than the other single site Vin Jaune in this collection.

    Other Reviews....
Vin Jaune is a very small percentage of the winery's production, as they only make some 7,000 bottles (clavelin) of it per year. It's a scarce and rare wine, which, from the best terroirs, shows vibrant and complex, with power and finesse. That is the case of the 2016 Château Chalon, which has great concentration, even in a lighter vintage, and reflects the more elegant profile of the Lias soils and keeps the citrusy aromas and flavors. It's fresh, expressive, floral and herbal, with character, incisive and pungent. The aging potential of these wines has been proven over the years, and he is experimenting with longer élevage... Drink 2024-2045.

The 2016 Les Bruyères Vin Jaune, from Trias soils, was a more open, larger wine, with more notes of smoke and peat but with finesse and freshness. The bottle we tasted from had been opened for one week. It showed unusually delicate, fine and elegant, deep, complex and nuanced. It’s like white ouillé wine from this same terroir, but it doesn’t have the exuberance and it’s not a large wine. It has a very tasty, almost salty finish. Drink 2024-2040.

The En Spois plot is at the top of the slope on clay and Triassic blue marls, along with some limestone influence, planted between 1993 and 2000.

Les Bruyères is single south facing Arbois site planted on Triassic clay soils, with a rich vein of blue marl running through it. While the site is one of the warmest Stephane works with, the wines from here tend to maintain a firm backbone of structure and salinity that ensures harmony on the finish.

La Vasee hails from a site with clay soil and a cooler northerly exposure. Vines here are the oldest Stéphane works with, and the wines display more saline and briny acidity, elegant spice, iodine, and Islay malt whisky character.

La Mailloche has a gentle east aspect and very degraded soils of Liassic clay. Another wine with good firmness and seductive weight with some nice bitterness.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Les Bruyères Chardonnay is flintier, more rustic, more reductive with the classical bitter twist in the finish. The Trias soils always seem to give this wine a spicy Jura twang, and 2019 was a good year for the clay soils. It should develop nicely in bottle. Drink 2024-2030.

This is the latest edition of Vin Jaune W that was a massive success with the first release over a decade ago. The late great whisky producer in Burgundy, Michel Couvreur, has made some fine whiskies aged in Tissot’s Vin Jaune barrels and this wine reverses the concept. Fine Vin Jaune aged in whiskey barrels for almost 7 years. The Vin Jaune is so powerful that the nuances of whisky only adds a gentle facet.

A frisky, bone dry Gruner Veltliner that shows an energised tension.

The Ott family has been producing wine since 1889 in the region of Wagram in Lower Austria, just to the East of the triangle of Kremstal, Kamptal and Wachau. The estate has around 28 hectares of vineyards located around Feuersbrunn and Engabrunn and Bernhard Ott now runs the domaine since taking over the reigns from his father in 1995. The vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic principles and 90% are planted to Grüner Veltliner with the remaining 10% being Riesling.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint tinge of green around the outskirts and a watery hue. Red apple skin and lime aromas are intermeshed with hints of quince, green apple and slatey mineral notes. Zingy lime and green to red apple fruits dance over a gentle quince, wet slate and mineral back drop. Frisky acidity with a bone dry and racy finish that shows plenty of energised tension.
