Pierre Vincent Girardin is making big waves in Burgundy with the hype surrounding him already at fever pitch. All this and Pierre is still only in his early 20's with just a handful of vintages under his belt. Part of the excitement stems from the vineyard sources at his disposal, but also from the distinct style exhibited so clearly in these initial vintages of his wines. Of course it helps that his father is Vincent Girardin, and following the sale of his namesake Domaine in 2011 bequeathed Pierre 4.5 hectares of prime vineyards, and helped set up a brand new winery where evidently no expense has been spared on the latest presses, fermentation tanks and larger-format barrels from Tonnellerie François Frères.
Stylistically Pierre has taken a different approach than that of his father's wines, preferring a lighter touch than the rich and oaky style of years gone by. The white wines are finer-boned and more reductive, and his are reds delicate and fruit-driven, with a minimum of extraction and plenty of stem retention.
Les Grands Charrons is a very special lieu-dit that borders Premier Cru ‘Goutte D’Or’, and is situated at 250+ metres altitude with average vine age in the plot over 35 years old. The wine is fermented and aged in 456L barrels (30% new) for 10 months plus 8 months in stainless steel.
Please note: due to the winery packaging, we often receive these wines from the distributor with marks on the front label. These are usually minor, however they are unavoidable.

Given the difficulties planting in the hard, chalky, and gravelly soils of the Casse-Têtes vineyard, it's no wonder it was coined a "headache". Yet as is well practiced, vines that struggle often perform the best, which is again true here. Pierre's Meursault Casse-Tetes is a great example of the firm and chiseled style he aims to produce.

Pierre makes an outstanding Puligny-Montrachet from the Les Folatieres vineyard, however his specific parcel in the En La Richard sector is classified village level rather than Premier Cru as with the remainder of this plot. It is understood the owner of this parcel had a disagreement at the time of classification and withdrew their land from the process. The end result is an excellent Premier Cru in all but name. The other owner of this plot is Lalou Bize-Leroy used in her d'Auvenay label.

Abbaye de Morgeot has the same gravelly, clayey limestone soil as its neighbours, providing a well-drained terroir with plenty of mineral complexity. The incline here is much gentler than further up the hill, and the vines have a very slight aspect toward the southeast.

Pale yellow. Aromas of yellow stone fruits, pineapple and spices. Supple, sweet peach and spice flavors are nicely firmed by a touch of minerality. A bit more phenolic on the back end than the Sous La Velle. This wine is from vines higher on the hillside--in fact, at a similar altitude as the premier crus--on soil featuring more calcaire than the Sous La Velle.

Bright, healthy yellow. Very ripe aromas of peach and apricot come across as a bit more evolved than those of the Poruzots but then this barrel finished its sugars earlier and is a bit lower in SO2 now. Sappy and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of chewy dry extract to its very ripe, rich yellow fruit flavors. Hard to assess with confidence but certainly very rich. These last few wines are carrying close to 14% alcohol.

Showing the fresher, more elegant style of the vintage, yet still with plenty of heft, the 2014 Meursault Les Narvaux comes from 65-year-old vines and was brought up in larger Stockinger barrels from Austria. It offers terrific notes of green citrus and assorted mineral-nuances, with impressive intensity and depth in both its aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and seamless on the palate, with a beautiful sense of vibrancy and tension, it’s already impossible to resist, yet I suspect it will cruise in the cellar given its balance. Pale color. Aromas of crystallized lemon peel and peach show a candied aspect in a positive, fresh way. Juicy, elegant and gripping, showing the thickness of the vintage's better examples but also solid balancing acidity. Its flavors of citrus fruits and acacia flower are enlivened by underlying minerality. Finishes generous, dry and long. Incidentally, Jobard told me that his 2014s finished drier than his 2015s.

(as with the Chevalières and the Genevrières, I tasted this wine from a pièce because Jobard's foudres were still finishing their sugars): Apple, clove and a hint of oak on the nose and palate. Boasts lovely inner-mouth lift and grip; the yield here was actually slightly higher than that of the 2014 (40 hectoliters per hectare, vs. 30 or 35) but this has a more concentrated mouthfeel. Soon to arrive are the 2014 wines, an outstanding year for White Burgundy. In speaking with Allen Meadows from Burghound, Remi Jobard described his 2014s as "rich but balanced wines that have really improved during the course of their elevage." He added "I particularly like how refreshing they are as there is bright but not drying acidity that enables them to be at once rich but inviting. I only wish I had more of them as the June hail storm cost me a lot of yield, in fact my average volume was only 20 to 23 hl/ha. One minor modification to my usual approach is that I did a bit less lees stirring as I felt the wines would be rich enough without it."
Remi Jobard's newest acquisition from 3 Bourgogne parcels of 40-50 year old vines now in conversion to organic farming. Approximately 30% new oak.
Resembles a baby Meursault yet at a fraction of the price

The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Since then he has built a reputation for crafting some of the most consistent and reliable examples of Chablis from vineyards planted on the prized Kimmeridgian soils around the village of Lignorelles. The Domaine is now under the care of Roland's two sons Arnaud and David who have increased the family holdings to twenty-one hectares, adding single-vineyard cuvées while constantly striving for more complexity and layered texture in the mineral-driven wines they produce. Ferments are temperature controlled in stainless steel and all but the Petit-Chablis spends some time in 2 to 5 year old barriques. TOP VALUE & UNDER THE RADAR The new generation arrived in 2010 with the arrival of David & Arnaud, following on from their father/grand-father. Roland first bottled his own wines in 1979 and the domaine has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Vauprin is a special selection on the hill of Vauprin, situated close to Lignorelles. Vines range from 20-80 years old and the parcel is 1.8ha in size. This AP Chablis is notable for the confident way in which oak is used (up to 50%, ranging from new to five-year-old). Lovely density on the palate allied to purity of fruit. Here, the oak really does add a lot of complexity but the Chablis character is still evident underneath. A very fine Chablis. Drink 2023 - 2027.

Andy Howard MW - DecanterAnother wine which started out in wood for 50% of the volume, which may explain the light coconut touch. Great floral points alongside, such energy of fruit, primary yellow notes, clean concentrated citrus zest, long saline finish. Another beautiful wine from this site. Drink from 2024-2028.

From south-west facing vines in the hills around Lignorelles, the vines were planted in the 1960's and cover 3ha. The wine is fermented in steel tanks, with 60% aged for 10-12 on lees in tank, and 40% in older wood. Doesn't have quite the richness of the Vauprin Chablis but this is still a very fine, pure expression of 2021. Lovely acidity and mineral notes compliment the grapefruit characters and ripe pear fruit on the palate. Complex and classy. No hurry to drink this. Drink 2023 - 2027.

Andy Howard MW - DecanterThis cuvée had the highest degrees of the vintage chez Lavantureux. Fresh pale yellow. Good plums on the nose, very joyous, a wine at ease with itself. An extra degree of succulence and more acidity too, very well handled. Half has been made in barrel but there is no evident wood effect. Drink from 2024-2028.

The assemblage with the 25% wood component has been made and this is ready to bottle. Pale primrose this has more tension and vigour, faintest pyrazine but perhaps that is more the marine iodine. I love the balance as always.

Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyA wine which captures the essence of classic Chablis from the past yet manages to make it modern and more approachable. Lots of concentration of fruit with great purity, allied with a salty aftertaste and a fine line of lemon and lime acidity. Despite the weight, this is lifted and lively on the palate. A fine Chablis. Drink 2022 - 2026.

A full, fleshy and dramatic Vau de Vey, with ripeness and generosity of fruit kept in check by the climat’s freshness. The 2018 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru comes from 0.4ha of 25-year-old vines and is matured in 80% oak barrels and 20% stainless steel. It has a fabulous nose of citrus fruit, orange blossom, crushed limestone and light fumé aromas. The oak here is beautifully knitted. The palate is very well balanced and poised, the oak perhaps a little prominent on the midpalate and masking some of the terroir at the moment. However, there is superb precision on the finish. Jasper Morris - Inside BurgundyA touch of wet walnut accompanies pear and lemon on this wine's fresh nose. Vivaciousness at the core belies the heat of the 2018 vintage. Yes, there is concentration and some midpalate weight, but salty, preserved-lemon freshness dominates the wine and bright finish.

Anne Krebiehl MW - Wine Enthusiast - 2011 Domaine Rolet Arbois Vin Jaune (620ml)Jura, FRANCE$130. 00Bottle$1560.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Cork
Domaine Rolet was founded in 1942 by Désiré Rolet. His four children took over operations in 1958, with Bernard and Guy taking charge of the vines and vinification, and Pierre and Eliane running marketing. Over the years, the domain has acquired prime old vines across Arbois, Côtes-du-Jura and L’Étoile appellations and now spans 65 hectares. Brothers Bernard and Guy Rolet farm sustainably and harvest the fully ripe grapes by hand—which is difficult work among the steep slopes. No synthetic chemicals are used and the soils are constantly ploughed.
Vin Jaune is emblematic of the Jura region, and is made from 100% Savagnin that thrives in the hills of blue and grey marls from the lias (Jurassic) and the earlier trias (Mesozoic) eras. All harvesting is done by hand, and following vinification the wines spends 6 years maturing in barrel with no topping up. This allows a layer of flor to form on top of the wine, and gives the final wine its unique walnut and saline flavours.

2016 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les LuchetsBurgundy, FRANCE$270. 00Bottle$3240.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A pure and pretty nose offers up notes of essence of pear, acacia blossom and citrus along with hints of petrol and matchstick. The medium weight flavors are notably rich and caressing, indeed even tender, while the delicious finish is borderline delicate. This is a lovely exercise in finesse and grace.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundPale bright yellow. Musky leesy complexity to the aromas of white peach and saline minerality. A step up in personality and mineral pungency from the Vireuils, with its element of fruit sweetness buttressed by a rocky quality. Flavors of citrus fruits, white peach and minerals carry through a long, spicy, gripping finish, which shows noteworthy calcaire lift.

Stephen Tanzer - VinousAlmost soft and white peachy on the nose. Good tension on the palate and some citrus but no matchstick and already accessible. Long and surprisingly open.
