The Château Latour-Martillac Blanc 2014 has voluminous nose: tinned pineapple intermingling with white peach and citrus aromas, but perhaps missing the killer delineation of its peers at this point. The palate is well balanced with a dab of sour lemon on the entry. It gently builds in the mouth, mustering more and more precision until the finish that delivers lemongrass mixed with orange zest notes. This will be fascinating to revisit after bottling. It does not quite know what it wants to do at the moment hence my conservative score, however it may evolve into a very fine white Pessac-Léognan that will exceed my score. Drink 2018 - 2032.

Features a plump core of white peach and lemon granita, offset by honeysuckle and tarragon notes. Shows a twinge of lime on the finish.

Again, wild Sauvignon character, savoury herbs, grassy citrus, great persistency, high acidity, one for the purists. The blend is 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon, 13%abv, 25% new oak barrels, and a very low ph of 3.1 giving a real uplift but with a corresponding narrowing in the mid-palate. High yield of 48hl/h.

Dense and silky texture for a white with sliced apple, pear and stone character. Full and solid. Texture of a red wine. Solid.

The 2015 La Tour Martillac has a gorgeous, complex nose, subtle pear and green apple scents, a whiff of the old sea spray coming in from the Atlantic. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, very complex in the mouth with lip-smacking salinity towards the finish. What a fabulous white Bordeaux from the estate, certainly one of the best that I have ever encountered.

A sure-value buy from the Kressmann family. Slightly sweet ripeness on the nose and a little soft on the palate compared to the 2014, even though there are lovely fruits on display. One third new oak, aged on the lees.

Finely balanced, this shows great style and breeding. If it seems at first to be ready to drink now, what is behind, in the wood and structure, says otherwise. The fruit quality is straight, crisp and perfumed.

The 2022 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc was cropped at 18hL/ha between 24 August and 1 September, aged in 50% new oak. Pressed dried flowers on the nose, scents of dandelion and yellow plum, a touch of fennel coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a pithy opening, nutty and smoky in style, good depth with that nutty finish offering noticeable salinity. Very fine. Drink 2027-2050.

Very sophisticated and structured yet weightless and agile, with a finesse, precision and length that is so wonderful. So precise and complex with vivid acidity and length. Such clarity. Really excited about this one.

Up with the crème de la crème, the 2022 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc is based on 76% Sauvignon Blanc and 24% Sémillon, all of which is still aging in 50% new French oak. It has an incredible bouquet of honeyed citrus, grapefruit, and flowers to go with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s concentrated, has a great texture, nicely integrated acidity, and a brilliant finish. Yields here were a miniscule 18 hectoliters per hectare, and the Grand Vin is a selection of only 44% of the total production.

    Jeb Dunnuck

Herbal and aromatic on the nose, expressive and engaging. Full, round and energetic, a lovely frame and texture to this, lovely licks of lemon, grapefruit, pear, apricot, some bitter lemon rind giving accents and a gorgeous persistence, not so vibrant, but there's underlying acidity that keeps the lift and it's so well controlled and confident. Really feels very precise and delineated, polished and structured, still with some spice giving some tension but this is really lovely. Complete and characterful. A yield of 18hl/ha. Drink 2023 - 2030.

Flowers, white chocolate, pineapple, spice, papaya, white peach, and orange scents are easy to pick up on the nose. On the palate, the wine is fresh, sweet, and fruity leaving you with creamy yellow citrus, grapefruit and white peach notes. The wine blends 76% Sauvignon Blanc with 24% Semillon. The harvest took place August 24 - September 1. 14.56% ABV, pH3.29. Drink from 2025-2032.

The 2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc shows promise, bursting with aromas of lime zest, fresh mint, grapefruit and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, chiseled and nicely concentrated, it's a taut, intensely flavored wine that concludes with a long, saline finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2021 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc was picked from 15 to 24 September with less Sémillon due to frost (11%) and matured in 50% new oak. Clean and precise on the nose, this unfurls nicely in the glass, taut and mineral-driven. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, lively and beautifully balanced, just the right amount of salinity with a cohesive and lingering finish. This is an outstanding white Pessac-Léognan. Drink 2024-2045.

The 2021 Malartic-Lagravière Blanc races out of the glass with soaring Sauvignon Blanc notes. Bright and sculpted, the 2021 has plenty to offer. Citrus peel, white flowers, sage, mint and crushed rocks lend notable complexity as the 2021 opens with some coaxing. Drink 2024-2031.

This is very framed and beautiful. Tannin tension, in a very fine and polished way. It’s full-bodied, yet agile and almost weightless. Long and persistent with great finesse and structure. 89% sauvignon blanc and 11% semillon.

The 2020 Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc showed brilliantly, with medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe pineapple, white flowers, and chalky minerality. It shows the purity and precision of the vintage, has terrific mid-palate concentration, bright acidity, and a great finish. The blend is 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon, harvested from the 15th to the 24th of September, that's still resting in 50% new French oak. It's a stunning white in the making.

Green and red apple, pear, caramel, brioche and toasted lemon tart. You can feel they achieved good ripeness in the weight and density on the palate - it's not overly rich but can take the oak elements, delivering a more nuanced and sophisticated style this year that's not just fresh and fruity, but also weighty and textured. You get the crushed stone and cooling mint effect on the tongue as well as the peach, plum and green apple crispness. A sharp tang on the finish is thrilling, accentuating the life and vibrancy you get the whole way through. Less overtly acidic than some, it's more in the background while the other more nuanced details sit on top. A lovely wine this year, lots to like with all the necessary elements to age. Drinking Window 2023 - 2035.

Composed of 76.1% Sauvignon Blanc and 23.9% Semillon, the 2019 Blanc was harvested from the 4th of September to the 16th of September. It is aging on the lees in French oak barrels, 55% new, for an anticipated 12-14 months. It comes skipping out of the glass with vivacious, cheery scents of white grapefruit, lime leaves and orange blossoms with wafts of white peaches, coriander seed and beeswax. Medium to full-bodied, I LOVE the intensity and texture on the palate, with an electric line of freshness and loads of citrus and mineral layers paving the finish.

Crisp and bright Sauvignon character but with added depth, flesh and mouthfeel that comes across in a lovely expansion through the mid palate, and slate walls to drag things down to a snail's pace through the finish. Accomplished and classy with savoury stone fruits and rosemary edging.

The honeysuckle, just-squeezed lemons, green apple and pears on the nose are just perfect. On the palate, the juicy, ripe, creamy, fresh citrus fruits, with their sweetness keep on going, due to all that racy acidity. This should age quite well.

Fermented in 55% new barrels and blended of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon, the 2018 Malartic Lagraviere 2018 Blanc is a little closed to start, soon opening on the nose to reveal ripe apples, Bosc pears and warm peach scents with hints of wet pebbles and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with apple and pear flavors with just enough freshness and an oily texture, finishing long and spicy.

The Château Malartic-Lagravière Blanc 2014 is a tentative blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon that represents around half of the total crop. Picked between 10 and 26 September, yields were 36 hectoliter per hectare and after a ten-day cold settling it is currently being matured in 60% new wood, the remainder one-year old. It has a lively and energetic bouquet surfeit with dewy green apple, wet limestone and citrus scents - already vivacious and demanding the imbiber's attention. The palate is fresh and crisp with a keen line of acidity, vibrant citrus fruit with a linear, poised, marine-influenced finish, as might be befitting the label! Excellent. Drink 2017 - 2027.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a watery hue. The nose is quite pungent with aromas of ripe gooseberries, lime and citrus laced with some herbaceous grassy characters and faint asparagus end notes. The palate shows good intensity and is quite full in its textural feel finishing crisp and fresh. Bursting with aromas of confit citrus, nectarine, grapefruit and pastry cream, the 2021 Aile d'Argent is a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine that's ample and textural, and indeed a touch fat, despite the cooler vintage. Sharp lemon and lime, grapefruit and apricot and peach - exotic yellow fruits and fresh white stone fruits. Lovely clarity and weight on the palate, it has the density and the texture, juicy but not too much, lively but not too much. Just a wonderful crystalline aspect - absolute purity but with the depth coming from the slightly exotic fruit - pineapple with peach and zest citrus fruits that add sweetness and bitterness while a lick of slate gives a salty tang. Rich but also light and playful - excellent balance and overall delectability. So many details on show. 3.25pH. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040.

Juicy, sweet, elevated, energetic and fresh, the finish is filled with sweet, crisp, yellow citrus from start to finish. The wine blends 80% Sauvignon Blanc with 20% Semillon, 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 8 - September 16. Drink from 2023-2033.

Fragrant white flowers on the nose with sweet lemon scents; this smells lovely. Succulent and just shy of unctuous, it has a nice density and weight on the palate, giving a full mouthfeel and good dose of bitter lemon, sweet pineapple, crisp apple and creamy peach. Round and driving, this has energy and zing and excellent balance from start to finish. Lovely and will be very enjoyable in bottle! Drinking Window 2025 - 2035.

The 2015 Château Olivier Blanc has a lively citrus and lime flower scented bouquet, with pear and almost granitic notes surfacing with aeration. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity - green apple, gooseberry and a twist of sour lemon towards the finish. There is something almost Loire-like here, perhaps a little Sancerre-like in style, but irrespective of stylistic semblances, the bottom line is that this constitutes a very fine white Bordeaux that will be delicious from the word go.

This has some weight, with lemon curd, dried verbena and chamomile notes around a core of yellow apple and salted butter. Stays lively, showing good cut on the finish.

This estate reworked its whites with the 2007 vintage, when it shifted from 50/50 Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, taking the opportunity to replant on more suitable soils. It has flown ever since. The grip, the shape and the aromatics on the nose are wonderful but also the subtle minerality on the finish that gives a lemon peel and wet stone persistency. 23% Semillon, 2% Muscadelle, 3.36ph, 13.3%abv.

The 2015 Olivier is bright, crisp and absolutely delicious. Grapefruit, lemon peel and a host of grassy notes add a kick of salivating freshness on the tense, vibrant finish. This is a strong showing.

The Château Olivier Blanc 2014 has much more complexity on the nose compared to its red counterpart: mineral-rich citrus fruit with Granny Smith apples and freshly cut pear. The palate is vibrant and animated with an almost shrill opening: a killer line of acidity (reminiscent of Domaine de Chevalier Blanc!) and an almost Muscadet-like, marine-influenced finish. This is a great white Olivier to enjoy over the next 20 years. Drink 2018 - 2035

The beauty of this wine comes in its persistency, the juicy citrus, nectarine and wet stone crispness that it displays long after the wine has left your mouth. This has long been one of my favourite Pessac white wines, although this year unusually I think the red is a touch more successful, but Olivier is one of my clear châteaux to watch. The aromatics just jump out of the glass. Can it be a coincidence that winemaker Laurent Lebrun was born in the Loire Valley? Certainly there is a clean minerality here, from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with an emphasis on salinity and tension.

The Château Pape-Clement Blanc 2014 is a blend of 50% Sémillon, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sauvignon Gris picked between 8 and 23 September. There is a tangible richness, almost decadence on the nose that actually shades the Magrez-Fombrauge Blanc. Lemon curd and dried honey soar from the glass. The palate is very well balanced, powerful in the mouth, a slight viscosity coming through towards the finish that fans out with a sense of confidence and brio. This will be utterly irresistible. Drink 2017 - 2030.

Distinctive, with lemon sherbet and yellow apple flavors, matched to white ginger, brioche and singed macadamia nut notes. Quite creamy in feel, with a paraffin hint at the very end. An overt style, but hard to deny.

As ever with this wine, there is clear oak barrel influence from the first attack, giving a rich intensity to the stone fruits, majoring on peach and mango. Fairly high alcohol, staying true to the house style but with a very attractive acidity underneath. This is sweet, rich, but with a biting lift.

A blend of 40% Clairette, 30% Bourboulenc, 20% Grenache Blanc and 10% Ugni Blanc. Bright straw colour with a watery hue. The nose features ripe pear, baked apple and honeysuckle aromas followed by some spice. Rich and broad textured, the palate is filled with delicious ripe pear, apricot, honeysuckle and spicy baked apple flavours. Excellent concentration finishing dry with a lick of fresh acidity and a long nicely rounded aftertaste. Riper and fuller in style than the 2018.

A luscious yet lighter, elegant style of Sauternes that retains good freshness.

Château Petit Védrines is the second wine of the Barsac cru classé, Château Doisy Védrines sourced from less concentrated pickings on the main estate plus six hectares of vines that were bought in 2001 from neighbouring Château Bouyot.
Bright straw core with yellow gold tinged edges. Seductive aromas of honeyed peaches and apricot engulf the olfactory senses with hints of marmalade, toffee and spice also chiming in. Luscious yet fresh and finessed, the palate is decorated with peach and honeyed apricot flavours. Marmalade, pineapple and delicate spice elements linger around the back half. Elegant, honey drenched finish.

It has a crisp and fresh grapefruit and passion fruit scented bouquet that is a sheer delight - particularly thanks to the underrated Sauvignon Gris. The 2016 Puygueraud Blanc is gorgeous. In a vintage in which so many whites veer toward the richer side, it has maintained gorgeous freshness and vivacity. Lemon peel, white flowers, sage, stone fruit, pear and a host of Sauvignon Blanc-driven varietal notes run though this deeply expressive, chiseled white. I tasted the 2016 from tank just prior to bottling. In 2016, the winemaking team bumped up the Sauvignon Blanc and decreased the Sauvignon Gris to keep as much freshness as possible.

The 2018 Rieussec was picked from 10 to 31 October in two or three tries through the vineyard. This contains one of the highest percentages of Sauvignon Blanc (25%). It does not possess the same intensity as the previous vintage, a little compact and perhaps more floral in style, yellow flowers mixed with acacia honey and saffron. The palate is medium-bodied with notes of apricot, quince and light spicy aromas with good acidity. It is well balanced and fresh, although it does not have the weight and complexity of the 2017, ergo I suspect this will be earlier drinking.

The vineyard is planted to 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle, and the wines are aged in roughly 50% new French oak.

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. Drink 2023 - 2057.

Still in barrel, the 2017 Rieussec is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Rich, ample and voluptuous, the 2017 has all the intensity that is so typical of Rieussec, but with the extra kick of freshness that is now such an emphasis here. Candied orange peel, crême brulée, vanillin, passion fruit and pineapple emerge from the glass. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. Drink 2022-2042.

Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026.

Getting a big “Wow” in my notes, the 2017 Chateau Rieussec is an extraordinary Sauternes that has everything. Awesome notes of orange zest, honeyed flowers, ripe pineapple, peach, and spice all soar from the glass, and this beauty is already complex, has full-bodied richness and power, a great mid-palate, and a beautiful spine of acidity. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades or more. Drink 2020 - 2040.

An exceptional wine, this is just stuffed full of exotic fruits, layers of apricot, saffron, truffle and citrus, all powering through the palate with a mouthwatering finish. An early harvest - they finished picking in 2017 the same day that they started in 2018, and the crop showed unusually pure botrytis, needing less sorting than usual. Absolutely one to look out for. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Casting a pale lemon-gold color, the 2019 Sigalas Rabaud hits the ground running with fabulously intense scents of tangerine peel, lemon marmalade, clover honey and paraffin wax plus suggestions of allspice, candied ginger and orange blossoms plus a waft of chalk dust. The palate is a blow-you-over, powerful expression, featuring condensed layers of citrus preserves, honey and spice notions with an unctuous texture and just enough freshness to balance, finishing with epic persistence. Impressive showing.

Aromas of white fruits, crisp orchard fruits, spices, smoke, spring flowers and pear introduce the 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured wine with a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids, concluding with a mineral, fresh and long finish highlighted by delicate notes of thyme and garrigue. Comprising 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris and matured in 50% new oak, this blend is among the finest white wines produced at this address. Drink 2025-2045.

The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was picked from August 23 to September 9 at 36hL/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has a reticent bouquet at first, requiring a few swirls of the glass to reveal touches of orange pith, peach skin, wild fennel and light pressed white flower scents. The palate is very well balanced with a lovely creamy texture, counterbalanced by the taut line of acidity. Very poised and focused, it's somehow almost Corton-Charlemagne-inspired on the finish (perhaps due to the umami). This is a seriously fine white Pessac-Léognan. Drink 2028-2048.

The 2023 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is quite the extrovert. Apricot, passion fruit, mint, tangerine peel and pineapple all soar out of the glass. Medium in body, with gorgeous texture, the 2023 is quite showy. I imagine it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Drink 2026-2037.

Another exceptional vintage for Smith-Haut-Lafite Blanc. It’s so complex and structured, offering a palate that feels similar to the texture of a red wine with a velvety tannin structure. There’s a lot going on here. Spice, crushed seashell and citrus blossom. Salty, too. Weightless and so long. 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon.

One of the bigger, richer wines in the vintage, the light gold-hued 2023 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc offers up a killer nose of orange blossom, honeyed citrus, toast, spice, and minty flowers. It's medium to full-bodied and has a richly textured, layered mouthfeel, bright acidity, and a great finish. It's probably the white of the vintage.

Strong aromatics, on the expressive side with herbal accents, spiced wood, green apple, quince, apricot, mango, peach honeycomb and elderflower. Very floral. Fresh and expansive, mineral and direct, but a good body full of fruit, freshness and honey characters. Definitely more opulent and exotic than the others in the range with hints of tropical fruit - pineapple and mango but also some lovely bitterness which adds tension to balance it out. A good combination, more vibrancy and energy than in previous years. Succulent and sumptuous with salinity. Very good and very easy to drink. Ageing 50% new oak. Drink 2026 - 2038.

Orange cream, flowers, vanilla, pomelo, ginger, green apples, and a splash of pineapple hit the nose. Juicy, creamy, with sweetness, and balancing acidity giving the wine length, lift, and sweet citrus with a splash of spicy white peaches in the mid-palate, which carry through to the finish. The harvest took place August 25 - September 7. The wine blends 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon, and 5% Sauvignon Gris. 14% ABV, 3.2 pH. Drink from 2025-2035.

At this early stage, the 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc appears set to number among the best white wines this estate has produced to date. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, nectarine, grapefruit, pastry cream and smoke, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, racy acids and a taut, chiseled profile, concluding with a saline finish. Balancing texture and tension to compelling effect, this beautifully integrated, characterful white is going to be thrilling to revisit in bottle.

The 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is one of the great white wines of the vintage. Soaring in its aromatic intensity and sheer volume, the 2021 saturates every corner of the palate with its unctuousness and richness. Even with all of that volume, the 2021 remains bright and sculpted. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, orchard fruit, white pepper and mint build into the memorable finish. The 2021 is positively stunning, that's pretty much all there is to it. Drink 2024-2036.

The 2021 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was picked September 2–20 and raised in 50% new oak. It needs some time to really cohere in the glass and certainly is not as immediate as the Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte. Eventually, it reveals fresh lime, pineapple, honeysuckle and touches of curry leaf. The taut, fresh palate is well balanced and intense, with a fine bead of acidity. Complex with plenty of salinity, this is a cerebral Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc that will benefit from three or four years in the cellar. Drink 2026-2050.

The Grand Vin 2021 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc checks in as the usual blend of 90% Sauvignon and 5% each of Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. It has a kiss of green in its gold hue as well as brilliant aromatics of melon, stone fruits, minty herbs, chalky mineral, and flowers. Green apples, pineapple, flowers, vanilla, lemon chiffon and orange blossoms crowd into the nose. Energetic, crisp, fresh, clean and pure with a fabulous pop in the mouth from all the layers of sweet, but vibrant fruits. The touch of peppery spice in the finish adds another dimension. The wine was produced from a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Semillon. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2023-2035.

Toasted oak, lanolin, honeyed caramel, lemon zest and red apple peel on both the nose and palate. This has an unctuosity, a richness to the texture giving beautiful honeyed lemon touches with Semillon fatness and intensity from the Sauvignon. It’s sleeping a little right now, feels as if it’s calm and quiet, not yet ready to show the world what it’s about but you do get a precision and detail along the edges, a real sculpting of elements. I love the presentation, such a success for the vintage, excellent winemaking on show. It's the soft vibration you get as the flavours travel from start to finish that is so promising - a lot of life and immense enjoyment to come from this. Drinking Window 2025 - 2046.

A terrific wine, the 2021 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc wafts from the glass with aromas of confit citrus, crisp orchard fruit, nectarine and vanilla pod. The 2021 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc has a more generous nose than the Les Hauts de Smith Blanc thanks to the contribution of the 20% Sémillon. Yellow plum, dried pineapple and slithers of white peach feature on the nose. The palate is well balanced, taut and crisp, yet with real weight and depth. Lemongrass and stem ginger surface toward the finish. This punches well above its weight. A brilliant success and, frankly, within touching distance of the Grand Vin this vintage. Drink 2024-2040.

Crunchy green apple, lime juice and some elderflower with really soft hints of honeyed brioche. Sharp yet soft, this has a good immediate presence of lemony, peach and apricot fruit and a creamy base which is given an energetic push by a lemon zest freshness. The blend this year is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Sémillon, fermented in French oak, 50% new, within which it will age for 12 months on lees with batonnage. The Smith Haut Lafitte 2019 Blanc has a nose that unfolds in stages—offering intense white grapefruit, green mango, yuzu and orange blossoms scents to begin, giving way to hints of coriander seed, turmeric, shaved almonds and cedar chest with wafts of baking bread and beeswax coming through after some coaxing. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is wonderfully opulent with layers of citrus, stone fruit and savory flavors and a seductive oiliness to the texture, finishing very long and fantastically refreshing. Wow-o-WOW, that is good!

The 2019 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is creamy and beautifully textured. Orchard fruit, mint, white flowers, lemon confit and white pepper confer briskness to a white that nicely balances the natural richness of the year with freshness that comes from picking on the early side. A dollop of Sémillon adds richness and textural depth.

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 2014 is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris matured in 50% new oak. Curiously, it seems less expressive than the Le Petit Haut Lafitte and Les Haut de Smith at the moment. This is very taciturn in comparison but leaving it aside for 10-15 minutes it finally reveals chalk and oyster shell scents. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity and sharp citric fruit, but it feels quite linear on the finish, does not really deliver the knock-out punch that other vintages deliver. Hopefully it will muster something more to say throughout the remainder of its barrel maturation. Drink 2018 - 2028.

Incredible intensity thanks to almost no lees stirring and no cold soaking, instead vinified on the limit of reduction - they now only stir the lees when the reductive aromas are threatening to go too far. Instead they focus on harvest date and a short but firm pressing. Whatever they are doing, it works. Huge length, sweetness, tension and density; it gives you a lovely salinity on the finish, and always that Smith Haut Lafitte flourish. This truly stands out among the 2015 whites. The 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is powerful and intense, but also incredibly young at this stage. There is notable density and persistence throughout, but just like the red Grand Vin, the aromatic dimension in the wine has not yet developed. The wine's length and overall density are both impressive. Here, too, the en primeur samples were less expressive than the wines were when I tasted the separate lots from barrel in January 2016. With a bit of air, the flavors start to brighten and bristle with pure energy. The blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris.

Chateau Suduiraut are among the leading estates in Sauternes, with a history dating back to the 15th century. Over that time the property has expanded to now encompass 200 hectares with 92 hectares under vine, including prime vineyard parcels in the most elevated area of Sauternes alongside Chateau d'Yquem. The team at Suduiraut are passionate and uncompromising in their commitment to quality, ensuring only the finest grapes are selected over multiple passes in the vineyard, before expert vinification and a strict selection at final blending.

The 2023 Suduiraut (100% Sémillon) is a real stunner. Light on its feet yet wonderfully deep, the 2023 offers up a heady mix of tangerine oil, mint, white flowers, apricot and passion fruit. Readers will find a Sauternes that is more finesse than power. The 2023 is essentially a blend of three picks. The first was done at the end of September and accounted for 20% of the crop. The core of the vineyard, about 75%, was picked in a day ten window in October, following the September rains. A smaller third pick rounded out the harvest. Drink 2026-2043.

The 2023 Suduiraut is pure Sémillon that was picked from the end of September with more passerillage berries. After the rain, the first botrytis picking began on October 1 and lasted over the next 12 days, when botrytization was rapid. Seventy percent of the crop was picked on this date, which was essential for maintaining purity of fruit. The harvest concluded on October 17 after three tries through the vineyard. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a lovely, beguiling bouquet with dried honey, quince, almond and saffron aromas that are beautifully defined. The palate is well balanced with a spicy, tensile opening. Very impressive richness matches with a silver bead of acidity here. This is armed with immense purity on the finish that effortlessly manages the 150g/L residual sugar. Supremely gifted Suduiraut, ahoy. Drink 2027-2070.

Killer juice, the 2023 Château Suduiraut has a drop-dead gorgeous nose of honeyed orange, white flowers, warm croissant, and spice. This carries to a full-bodied Sauternes with a round, layered mouthfeel, terrific sweetness of fruit, and bright acidity.

Intensity is the keyword here. The wealth of ripe, and overripe white peaches, pineapples, pears, roasted cashews, apricots, spice, and vanilla is off the hook! The wine is rich, opulent, and seductive, but there is ample racy acidity giving this sweet treat the lift it needs. Long, and seamless, this is a true, decadent treat, that lovers of sweet wines should have in their cellars. It will age for decades. The wine was made from 100% Semillon. Drink from 2025-2060.

The purity of the botrytis grabs your attention, with density and intensity to the dried fruit, sweetness and length. Very spicy and long. Almost oily. Really rich. 150g/L residual sugar. 100% semillon.

The 2022 Suduiraut is laced with hints of tangerine peel, spice, vanillin, chamomile and dried flowers. It offers a lovely mix of botrytis-inflected flavors and textures while also showing quite a bit of freshness. The 2022 is done in the lighter style the château favors these days. My impression is that it is still coming together, as the wine shows a very slight lack of cohesion that is not typical. Drink 2027-2047.

One of the finest Sauternes I've been lucky enough to taste in some time, the 2022 Château Suduiraut is 100% Sémillon that hit 13.9% natural alcohol, with 190 grams per liter of residual sugar. Still resting in 70% new barrels, this monster of a Sauternes offers a huge nose of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade, spice, brioche, and almond paste. Full-bodied, rich, and massively concentrated, nevertheless, it somehow stays flawlessly balanced, fresh, and light on its feet.

Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Château Suduiraut 2011 has a muffled nose at first: dried honey and quince, wet wool and marzipan scents that gradually open up with aeration. Coming back after 10 minutes there is a heartwarming gingerbread note. The palate is viscous on the entry and full of tension. There is a keen line of acidity here, quite linear at first, but it fans out nicely toward the finish and offers notes of honey, mandarin and even a touch of rhubarb! This is a class act, a Sauternes that does not need to shout about its inherent qualities. Drink 2015 - 2045.

Bright yellow-gold. Knockout nose offers poached pear, honeyed mango, guava, baking spices and saffron, complicated by very pure, smoky, marmalady botrytis. Sweet, dense and very rich, boasting a compelling creamy texture and outstanding depth to its guava and mandarin orange flavors. Lively, harmonious acidity gives the middle palate a laser-like precision. Finishes bright and long, with lingering notes of baked apple and pear. An outstanding Suduiraut.

The dried-mango and pineapple character is so delicious in this wine. It’s full-bodied and medium-sweet, with a pretty density and a fruity finish. Wonderful balance to this super Sauternes. This is a little in reserve now, with so much for the future. Try in 2017.

A big, broad, powerful style, with piecrust, roasted almond and hazelnut cream notes framing the core of apricot, creamed peach and dried mango. Picks up extra fig and pear details through the toasty finish. Needs a bit of time to finish sorting itself out. Best from 2017 through 2030.

This is a rockstar Sauternes! If you love sweet wine, as prices are reasonable, run, do not walk and buy a case of this stellar wine. The layers of sweet, perfectly ripe, tropical fruits slathered with honey grab you. The velvety, soft, elegant, honeyed sweetness coats your mouth and the finish reminds you again and again how good this wine is.

Made from 100% Semillon, the 2020 Suduiraut is being aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. It has 14% alcohol and 137 grams per liter of residual sugar. Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, aromas of pineapple upside-down cake, green mango and peach preserves tumble effortlessly out of the glass, followed by hints of honeycomb, preserved ginger and allspice. The palate is rich and decadent, delivering a seductively oily texture and just enough freshness to lift the long, spicy finish.

A Sauternes with tart tartine, cooked apple and caramel. It’s full-bodied, juicy and sweet, yet there’s lots of caramel and spice, too, such as cloves. Comes across almost dry. But lots of sweetness. Pure semillon. Unique. Tiny production.

With yields of only 8 hectoliters per hectare, the wine shows off its honey, roasted nut, candied orange rind, pineapple, stone, butter and overripe yellow tropical fruit profile with ease. On the palate the wine is rich, opulent, sweet and fresh with layers of candied yellow fruits, tangerine and nuts all coated with honey. Made from 100% Semillon for only the second time in the history of the estate, this is a serious sweet treat.

Full of pleasure, silky and richly textured, easy to sink into but carefully measured at the same time, addings its layers of orange peel, bloody orange, white pepper spice and truffle slowly but surely as it inches through the palate. Tiny floral notes accompany the saline minerality on the finish. Almost no botrytis in September, and then when the weather deteriorated at the end of September things really became a bit worrying. But they were able to hold on until October 19 (after stopping at the end of September, I imagine needing nerves of steel). Yields of around 8hl/ha. 3,000 cases of Suduiraut. 137g/l of residual sugar. A great example of what botrytis does - the pH is at 4, so the freshness comes from the bitterness of botrytis not high acidities.

Golden hue but still a little cloudy. Pure aromatics with peach and nectarine notes to the fore. Palate rich, fat and unctuous but balanced by the zesty, bitter-edged note of the botrytis. Very little acidity but there’s freshness all the same. Pretty long finish as well.

The 2017 Suduiraut was picked via three tries, with 75% of the crop picked in the second tries from 4 to 15 October. The harvest finished on 19 October, one of the last in Sauternes and after Yquem. “We were touched by the frost but not in the top terroir,” winemaker Pierre Montegut told me. It is matured in around 50% new oak. It has an expressive, harmonious bouquet with dried honey, white flowers and a touch of gripe water (a children’s medicine for those in the United States. I have been informed there is no equivalent on the other side of the Atlantic). The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, well judged acidity, plenty of botrytized fruit with a long, lightly spiced finish that feels so fresh and vital. This is a superb Suduiraut from Pierre Montegut and his team.

The 2017 Suduiraut stands out for its stunning interplay of botrytis-inflected richness and freshness. Candied orange peel, passionfruit, mint and lemon confit are some of the many notes that develop in the glass. Medium in body, with terrific freshness and energy, Suduiraut has so much to offer. Only the fruit from the last two picks made it into the Grand Vin.

One of the finest Sauternes I was able to taste for this report was the 2017 Château Suduiraut, from an estate that was unaffected by the April frost. A rockstar blend of 94% Sémillon and 6% Sauvignon, aged in 50% new oak, it boasts a big, thrilling bouquet of orange blossom, honeysuckle, and pure botrytis-laced fruit. Seamless, incredibly polished and balanced on the palate, it has serious sweetness, yet just glides across the palate and is remarkably elegant.

Composed of 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc harvested from the 17th of September to the 30th of October (three selective pickings in total), the 2019 Suduiraut is aging for 16-20 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. The alcohol came in at 14.1% with 130 grams per liter of residual sugar. Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the nose is oh-so-tantalizing with intense notes of candied ginger, beeswax, fenugreek and crystalized citrus peel over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, honey coated almonds, pink grapefruit and peach preserves with a waft of musk perfume. The rich, concentrated palate explodes with spicy fireworks in the mouth, complementing the the exotic fruit and peach preserves layers, with a racy line to lend just enough lift, finishing with epic length and depth.

The 2019 Suduiraut is dense, powerful and creamy. Pineapple, candied orange peel, spice, chamomile and passion fruit all run through this rich yet beautifully balanced Sauternes endowed with terrific freshness and tons of class. It has a gorgeous bouquet of wild honey, quince, pineapple and passion fruit, with good levels of noble rot evident. The palate is unctuous on the entry. A powerful and intense Sauternes in the making with layers of honey, ginger and quince. You could almost describe the texture as "gloopy"! This is a superb Suduiraut with long-term potential.

Dried-lemon and white-peach aromas with hints of tart. Full-bodied and medium-sweet with lemon tart flavor and a bright finish. Delicately sweet and vivid. Spicy and dried. Botrytis set late.

The flagship Sauternes, the 2019 Château Suduiraut is 94% Semillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc brought up in 50% new French oak. A stunning bouquet of caramelized peach, orange marmalade, honey, lavender, and citrus pith gives way to a medium to full-bodied Sauternes with impressive sweetness, a rich, expansive mouthfeel, and a vibrant spine of freshness that keeps it lively and balanced.

On the bright, yellow, tropical side of the fruit range with lemon curd, caramelized corn, butter, candied orange rind and honeyed citrus accents. Medium-bodied, and sweet, but not overly so, this can also be used to pair with spicy and savory courses as a meal accompaniment. This is a good thing because people need to open more bottles of these sweet treats.

One of the larger properties in Sauternes, Chateau Suduiraut totals 200 hectares with 92 hectares under vine. The grounds surrounding the Chateau are extremely impressive, created by the same designer as those of Versailles. Vineyard plantings are 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, with the wine maturation completed in 50% new French oak for 18-24 months. Often on the richer end, the wines are known to age extremely well.

The 2017 Suduiraut has a compelling brininess to the nose with a core of lemon curd, lime cordial and green mango with touches of musk perfume and chalk dust. The mouth is very rich and packed with decadent layers, with just enough freshness and great length.

Unctuous, offering melon, apricot and fig notes melded together, laced with bitter orange and maple accents, with a spicy, broad finish.—J.M.

Very concentrated, this is a great wine with rich intensity and balancing acidity. Honey and lemon flavors with a dry core of botrytis give the wine great balance as well as great potential for aging. Drink from 2025.

The pale lemon-gold colored 2016 Suduiraut features vibrant lime blossom, candied peel, white peaches, guava and exotic spice notes on the nose with nuances of marzipan and crème brûlée. Rich, layered and powerful in the mouth, it has a gorgeous creamy texture, lovely vibrancy and a long, spicy finish. Drink 2021 - 2049.

The 2016 Suduiraut is fabulous. Crème brȗlée, passion fruit, tangerine peel and exotic floral notes all race out of the glass. I marvel at how Suduiraut can deliver so much flavor intensity and yet remain so gracious and classy. The 140 grams of residual sugar are very well integrated. This is such a gorgeous wine. Drink 2024-2046.

A very concentrated Sauternes with a cornucopia of dried papaya, pineapple and mango, plus candied orange and tropical flowers that bowl you over. Although it stays in the background, there’s great acidity in this wine that keeps it very straight and clean, in spite of the luscious extravagance. Bright, citrusy finish. Drink or hold.

As to the Sauternes, the 2016 Château Suduiraut boasts a medium gold color and a fresh, clean, beautifully perfumed bouquet of orange blossom, honeyed pineapple, and flowers, with notable botrytis, which can be lacking in a number of Sauternes in 2016. With moderate acidity, a fleshy, full-bodied texture, and loads of fruits, it’s geared more toward drinking over the coming 10-15 years than any over-the-top cellaring. Drink 2019 - 2034.
