2020 Bodega Chacra Mainque ChardonnayPatagonia, ARGENTINA$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkBodega Chacra was formed in 2004 by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia’s founder, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. Piero always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties, and in 2004 he heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia that was originally planted in 1932 and knew immediately it was the opportunity he had been looking for. And so began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.
Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Fruit is hand harvested, fermented in concrete, transferred by gravity and treated in the gentlest way possible without fining or filtration in order to produce wines with transparency.
Mainque is a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and famed Burgundy producer Jean-Marc Roulot. Mainque Chardonnay comes from 3 parcels of land with a range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. The wine is aged in old barrels from Roulot's domaine in Meursault.

Very flinty and minerally on the nose with some aniseed and sliced green-apple aromas that follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with a creamy texture and pretty apple, citrus and nougat flavors. Creamy and long. Subtle and fine. From the owner of Chacra and Burgundy’s Jean-Marc Roulot. Very drinkable now, but will improve.

James Suckling“Made with Jean-Marc Roulot, 3 parcels with varying range of sand, clay, and pebble soils that are all biodynamically farmed. With early picking, the wines are fermented and aged for 10 months in barrels from Roulot’s domaine in Meursault (30% in concrete eggs, 10% for 9 months in 1st use, 60 % in 2 & 3rd use).” Patagonia Chardonnay here, though likely not from the North Face. I tried the 2018 vintage of this wine and its big sister back in February 2020, and preferred this one at the time for its energy and charm, and now we are on to the 2020 vintage, which I guess was sitting happily on the vine back then.
It’s glossy and gently creamy, but has plenty of flinty energy, cashew and green melon, with a lemon peel and melon rind bitterness, subtle spiced cinnamon oak, almost a green olive flavour and saline character, a whisper of struck match, and a tight preserved lemon finish of fine length. Sophisticated. Lovely to drink. Drink 2021 - 2026+.

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Filing the nostrils are pronounced scents of peach, dried honey and crème brulee with hints of bacon fat, cashew and citrusy nougat characteristics also evident. Rich with a broad feel across the palate, fleshy peach, dried honey, ripe pear and crème brulee flavours overlay traces of bacon fat, roasted almond and spice. River stone like texture finishing fresh and refined with ample length.

Scrumptious lime, red apple and subtle orange blossom infusions overlay a crunchy back drop of chalky lemon and wet slate characters. Zippy acidity finishing dry, long and mouth watering. An excellent first up effort from this trio.

The 2019 Riesling/Grüner Veltliner is rather lovely in a serious way. While you might think the combination of these two varieties would create a light, linear style, this is quite the opposite with its rich, savory, dense core of fruit. It’s dry, fresh and firm, with a satisfying bit of grunt on the long, grippy finish. You can expect lingering layers of apple, citrus and spice flavors, but the joy of this wine is truly in its multifaceted textural elements. It continues to improve year on year. Drink 2022 - 2029.

There is excellent density to the sappy and palate saturating medium weight flavors that are both denser and possess a more sophisticated mouthfeel while delivering fine length on the balanced finale where the wood expressed by the nose reemerges. Lovely with very good cellaring potential. Drink through 2029+.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame orchard fruit, bitter lemon and orange rind notes. Good weight and concentration here with quite a persistent and convincing finish. Good potential. Drink 2025-2040.

This could use better depth so 5 to 8 years of keeping should prove helpful in that regard. Drink through 2027+.

Since there were no appellations for Ligurian wine at the time, Agostino chose to name the winery after his father and their locality, Massaretti.
The vineyards are planted on sandy alluvial soil and enjoys striking diurnal temperature shifts thanks to the alternation between winds from the sea during the day and from the land at night. These two factors combine to provide the perfect home for Pigato to develop their full aromatic potential, giving light wines that are easy to drink but more elegant and complex.
Pigato is also known as Vermentino. Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Lifted pear skin, lime and green apple scents intermingle with some guava, fresh herb and stony mineral notes. Delicious pear, red apple skin and lime flavours show terrific intensity and textural volume across the mouth watering palate. Infusions of Mediterranean herbs, wet stones and minerals lie underneath. Finishes dry with crunchy acidity and a long saline laced aftertaste.

Relatively light and fresh yet intense across the palate with a beautifully shaped, Chablis like feel, delicious pear and citrus fruits are featured over a back drop of lime, distinct wet stone, delicate cashew, chalky mineral like elements and salted almonds. JamesSuckling.comI had the opportunity to taste two vintages (2020 and 2021) of the top whites side by side and could see the differences of the two years quite clearly, as the wines express the natural conditions of the year quite faithfully. The 2020 White Stones Chardonnay is riper than the other three wines; it's a very good wine, but it shows the warmer year with a rounder mouthfeel, faintly creamy, still a little closed in the nose, which slowly reveals yellow fruit and some spice. The palate is quite gentle, with 13% alcohol and very good balance. Drink 2023-2029.

Growing up around surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.
Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. The new white 2021 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille—the same place as a new white for the family firm Castro Ventosa—with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 12.48% alcohol, very good parameters for acidity and freshness and a consistent sensation on the palate. It's from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 11 months. It's super elegant, very clean, precise, symmetric and delineated, transparent, harmonious and elegant, like a grand cru Burgundy. Bravo! The price is high, reflecting scarcity but also quality. It transcends the appellation and the variety. Only 521 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2023-2032.

Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Lifted pear and apricot aromas are intermeshed with hints of bees wax, lemon butter and crème brulee. Rich, ripe pear and peach fruits dominate the nicely rounded mid palate with notions of bees wax, crème brulee and delicate cashew lying underneath. Fresh acidity enlivens the long generous yet refined finish.

Bastor-Lamontagne is always on the lighter, more airy side of Sauternes. The 2023 offers plenty of that finesse, but with a bit more mid-palate creaminess than in recent years. I am not sure it is the best Coutet in recent years, but it is certainly a very fine contribution to the vintage that should age well in bottle. Drink 2028-2060.

Situated in the epicentre of prime sweet wine production in France, their unique position and wealth of soil profiles allows d'Yquem to produce wines of enormous complexity with consistent accumulation of botrytis often in years when others struggle.
It was a nervous start to the 2021 vintage, with frost, hail, and mildew confronting the team in Spring. Thankfully Chateau d'Yquem was spared the worst of these impacts, largely due to their favourable geography. Two rainy spells arrived in mid-September and early October leading to generous botrytis accumulation. A three-week window followed with fine weather marked by cool, dry and sunny conditions which slowly concentrated the grapes. Harvest was completed with three successive passes of picking between 30 September and 30 October. 2021 is seen as an incredibly pure vintage, highly aromatic and seductive in these early stages of development.

Slightly burnished in hue, it has a very attractive bouquet with scents of dried quince, clementine, linseed and subtle candle wax, perhaps more discrete than usual, but certainly fresh and vibrant. The palate is medium-bodied and viscous on the entry, a Yquem with perhaps a lighter chassis than recent vintages, prioritizing poise and purity over horsepower— exactly the right approach in such a challenging season. It opens wonderfully in the glass, gaining more frangipane and kaki fruit scents, though it seems to have a lighter and more tensile finish than the 2020 or 2019. As such, I suspect that it will be comparatively approachable and, of course, delicious. Readers should note that I will probably re-taste the 2021 in Bordeaux during primeur. Drink 2030 - 2060.

A hint of confit ginger too. Lime. White grapefruit. A touch of fleur de sel. Marzipan. White almonds. Mango. Guava. Passionfruit. Pineapple – entirely pure and crisply fresh. All in great purity. This is floral, too. Mimosa. Buttercup (almost the leitmotif here). On the palate I find this tight and tense, yet so incredibly softly textured. And, above all, intense and captivating. Sparklingly striking and dynamic – and held together by the salinity as much as by the acidity, the two in fact working together, giving this an incredible aging potential. Delicate in its intensity. Sapid and with lovely waves of saline-inflected juicy fluidity. Even now this is a wine of very considerable complexity – built from assembling the finest botrytised grapes from the best of the couronne (the crown) of Bommes (with the Château of Yquem at the epicentre). This finishes with the most glorious bitter sugar note – burnt caramel just perfectly on the edge of bitterness. So accessible but so totally ageless and, for now, almost cool in its freshness.

2020 was another in the trio of warm and dry vintages for Sauternes, and the team at d'Yquem ended up picking the grapes in two main periods starting with much of the Sauvignon Blanc in late September. This was followed by the bulk of the botrytised grapes from 18th October. The final blend is a very classic 75% Semillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, with 135g/L residual sugar perfectly balanced by ample ripe acidity giving definition to the complex fruit profile.

Offering a pale gold color as well as a blockbuster bouquet of honeyed tangerines, tart apricots, liquid rocks, white flowers, and honeysuckle, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, an opulent texture, vibrant acidity, and again, an incredible sense of minerality, despite having no shortage of sweetness or richness. The 2016 is a classic blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon that hit 14.2% alcohol with 135 grams of residual sugar. It’s already complex and approachable yet will keep for 3-4 decades.

It has beautifully defined on the nose with dried honey, white peach, almond and chamomile and saffron emerging with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine acidity, lively and energetic, building wonderfully in the mouth with great sapidity on the finish. What a bloomin’ gorgeous Yquem. Tasted at the château. The palate reveals one of those vintages that shape-shifts into an apparently drier style than it is, largely thanks to its uber-racy backbone of freshness and layered mineral-inspired flavors, finishing with a regal, satin-textured savoriness. Difficult to resist now, this will be one of those Rip Van Winkle vintages that can be predicted to cellar not just for decades but for generations. For number crunchers: 14.2% alcohol, 137 grams per liter residual sugar, and total acidity is 3.7 grams per liter H2SO4.

Dense and thick but with racy acidity leavening the wine's liqueur-like flavors of peach, apricot and pineapple and imbuing it with superb energy. With aeration, this showed captivating notes of vanilla, toast and fresh and exotic herbs, plus a saline aspect on the very long finish. Still an infant, but already boasts terrific cut and purity of fruit. Director Pierre Lurton was thrilled to have a large quantity of wine at this high level of quality.

Speaking of sweet, at the top of the pyramid of the world's sweet is Chateau d'Yquem. With its track record of successful vintages, that's where it belongs. 2007 d'Yquem is another great success for the chateau! With a deep gold color, the nose explodes with honey, flowers, white peaches, nectarines, orange rind, vanilla custard, nuts and overripe pineapple. There is an intensity of flavor, multiple layers of sweet, ripe, honey drenched fruit and the perfect amount of acidity to give the wine ample lift keeping it fresh.

The palate is very well balanced with harmonious citrus fruit infused with flint and white pepper notes. Impressive weight and extract on the finish, this is turning into a delightful Pouilly-Fuissé. The 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé La Maréchaude 1er Cru, from clay-limestone soils, is the one cuvée that seemed to just miss a bit of tension and energy on the nose, surprising as it showed so well 12 months earlier. Perhaps an off-day? The palate is much more like it: focused and saline, touches of orange rind, yellow plum and peach skin, grapefruit towards the tensile finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle for the aromatics to unfurl. Drink 2025-2036.

The 2023 Doisy-Védrines doesn't quite deliver the complexity of the Doisy-Daëne on the nose, though it opens nicely with aeration to reveal lemon sherbet, saffron and light tangerine aromas. It is not as immediate as other Sauternes in this vintage, but it does exude elegance. The palate is well balanced with a very pure, tensile opening. This seems to be a less "fat" Doisy-Védrines compared to other vintages, possessing a fine bead of acidity. It’s lightly spiced with a tang of marmalade and quince toward the finish. This is a noble Barsac in the making. Drink 2027-2060.

2021 Chateau Grand Village BlancBordeaux, FRANCE$59. 99Bottle$719.88 DozenClosure: CorkGiven they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

Regularly one of the standout dry white wines from the Bordeaux appellation, the 2021 Blanc, a blend of 73% Sauvignon Blanc (picked on the 9th, 11th and 13th of September) and 27% Sémillon (picked on the 7th of September), offers up a fresh, delicate and elegant bouquet with aromas of lemon oil, lemon, spices, lime tree leaves, menthol and perfectly ripe orchard fruits. Jeb DunnuckMatcha, white chocolate and gooseberries - clean fresh and expressive on the nose. Crisp and tense, this has an immediate burst of energy and flavour on the palate, mouthwatering, pineapple, grapefruit, green apple and grapes, but so juicy, nothing bitter here at all. Fun and fresh, clean all the way through, and so uplifting. Feels perfectly manicured and there’s power, this is not light, it’s filling but at the same time elegant. Hard to explain just how good this is. Pure enjoyment with a sharp, almost sour edge that is very enjoyable. Drink 2024 - 2033.

2018 Chateau Grand Village BlancBordeaux, FRANCE$66. 99Bottle$803.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: CorkGiven they are under the same ownership of the Guinaudau family, Chateau Grand Village is often referred to as Chateau Lafleur’s second vineyard. The estate has been owned by the Guinaudau’s relatives for hundreds of years, however it was not until the year 2000 that they began to produce wine themselves from the property. Situated on the edge of the Fronsac region and classified as Bordeaux Superieur, the vineyard is planted to 79% Merlot and 21% Bouchets (Cabernet Franc). The terroir is similar to Saint Emilion with its mix of calcisol going down a foot or so to a bedrock mostly made up of asteria limestone. At Grand Village, they practice many of the same techniques employed at Lafleur, including pruning and de-budding adapted to each vine plant, crop thinning in summer and de-leafing. The grapes are picked by hand, followed by very careful sorting and selection. Grand Village also produces a white wine from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (85%) and Semillon (15%), from a 5 acre plot.

The Grand Village 2018 Blanc is composed of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Sémillon. A little youthfully mute to begin, with swirling it offers delicate scents of lime leaves, chalk dust and wet pebbles over a core of lemongrass, fresh grapefruit and green apples. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled with savory accents to the intense citrus flavors and harmonious acidity, finishing long and chalky. Drink 2022-2029.

James SucklingAnother brilliant vintage for this cuvée, the 2018 Grand Village (Lafleur) Blanc checks in as 75% Sauvignon and 25% Sémillon that was vinified in a mix of stainless steel and barrels, 20% being new. The Sémillon brings another level of complexity, and this offers a terrific nose of honeyed lime, Meyer lemon, and grapefruit notes all pinned by a beautiful underlying earthy mineral-component that emerges with more time in the glass. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and textured, it has a bright spine of acidity, flawless balance, and a great finish. Ranking the top whites in the region, it's going to drink well for 10-15 years. The palate is medium-bodied with a tangy opening. It’s a little spicier than its peers—marmalade and stem ginger, with more peachiness toward the finish. It feels harmonious and poised, but I would wait until the aromatics open, so give it four to five years after bottling. Drink 2029-2055.

The 2022 Giraud is very beautiful. In this vintage, Giraud is not quite as rich as it can be, and yet it still offers notable depth and nuance. Spice, ginger, orange confit and apricot jam open nicely in a mid-weight Giraud that shows terrific energy. Drink 2027-2047.
